Family Meetings
“The Lady Galatrine,” my lord said, introducing me to his Sister. “Noble of Violence.” The woman smiled, a small, cruel thing, set to odds against the beauty of her makeup and dress. I bowed, taking care to set the exact depth my Lord Isaac had taught me. His Estate was Prudence and he took such niceties quite seriously. Galatrine nodded in approval and then swept back into the crowded ballroom.
It seemed like everyone from the Chancel was here tonight. It might actually be true, in fact. The ballroom itself belied any normal measurement scales that I could summon to mind. Though it was my first time there, I could see myself becoming quite literally lost in the halls that surrounded it. Uncountable as the population of Castle Gris was, the ballroom could well be suited to host them all. Or at least made to do so, when occasion demanded it.
“Ah!” cried Lord Isaac, waving his arm across the crowd. “And here is Tanzmeister! Come over here, my dear sibling.” I repeated the bow as they approached, an androgynous figure who stepped with infinite grace, making their way through the sea of bodies as if every step was a dance. This was only correct and appropriate, as their state was Dance and it formed everything they were. Lord Isaac waved in my direction, pride on his face.
“Kari,” Lord Isaac continued, “I would like you to meet Duncan, my newest apprentice and proud servant, newly drafted from the families of England herself.” Meister Kari tilted their head as they took me in, their face a blank mask. They made no sound, but instead gave an elaborate, body-wide gesture that perfectly conveyed that they were quite pleased to meet me, that I was welcome to the Chancel, and that Lord Isaac had chosen well.
A thumping drum sounded from the far side of the hall, calling all to attention. The crowd fell silent. The butler standing by the door waited for all eyes to turn his way. “May I present our Realms’lord, Queen Butterscotch, Domina Effervescentia.” The huge double-doors opened silently. A diminutive figure stepped through, clad as beautifully as the others in the crowd, her dress printed with colorful animals.
“The Lady of Bubbles,” the butler concluded, then bent to one knee. Like a ripple, every occupant of the ballroom did likewise. I, of course, did the same. For just a brief moment, only Violence, Prudence, and Dance stood amongst the crowd. Then, as was only proper, they also knelt in respect to the greatest among them.

For Each Thing, a Monarch
Everything, every concept you can imagine, has a Monarch, a being responsible for its very nature.
Everything. From dreams to computers. From clouds to pencils. Flom glory to the nagging feeling that you forgot something when you left the house this morning, only to pass when you realize you did something different today and that's triggering your 'I forgot something' neurons, but you did it on purpose.
Each of these monarchs has complete say over the thing that's their realm. The Queen of Rain might will that rain no longer falls, or no longer wets; the King of Fire might decree that fire stops spreading, or consuming, or hurting. These things might require all their power, and might cause their downfall, but they would be able to do it, and the only ones who could challenge them would be another Monarch with an overlapping domain.
It is a good thing, then, that Monarchs care little for the physical word; they all live in a parallel dimension called the Court, where they spend all their time embroiled in petty politicking.
But even though Monarchs rarely think about the very domains that grant them the power they wield, they still need to attend to them. So, in order to do so, they appoint mortal caretakers to do their deeds for them. Which is why sometimes a dude will be walking around, think 'man, rollercoasters are really cool' and a voice in their head will say 'OK, would you like to be part of the essential substance of rollercoasters?' and before the dude can say 'wait what?', bam, they're now the Page of Rollercoasters.
Pages are much less powerful than Monarchs, in theory. In practice, they're a vessel for their entire power, and have exactly as much power, but just can't access it. Some Pages don't even realize what happened to them. The Page of Rollercoasters can do their job just fine by thinking about rollercoasters every once in a while. They'll do their job even better if they see one, and marvelously if they ride one. The material reality of rollercoasters is mantained. The Page doesn't realize the power they wield, and doesn't realize they could have the rollercoaster come to life, or teleport to the moon, or become something else entirely.
But some Pages do realize the nigh limitless power they wield. And they realize that the Monarchs don't care, and they can do whatever they want, and humanity is powerless to stop them. Hell, they sometimes don't even realize anything is wrong.
Which is why some Pages realize they are the only ones who are both capable of stopping evil Pages and who care enough about this world to do it. And so, driving along a random freeways, four random Pages are going to a small town to find out what's wrong with it. They have nothing in common, other than the fact that a random entity decided they should have unlimited power, and the fact that they will not have others toy with human lives.
What are Monarchs anyway?
If you ask them, they'll tell you that they are the sublimated ideals of concepts.
Actually, they won't tell you anything at all, because you're no more important than a speck of dust to them. (Unless that's the Queen of Dust; in that case, the dust is way more important to her.) But if they did, that's what they say.
There are some holes in that theory though. If they are all based on ideals, why is no one remember King of Dark Matter in ancient times? Sure, humans only discovered that recently, but surely it's existed forever? And why are there Monarchs of disproven concepts - the Queen of Miasma and the King of the Luminiferous Aether, who must use all their focus not to fall out of the Court and into material reality?
And, more importantly, why is there not a Monarch of Monarchs, a meta-monarch who would be the rightful ruler and have a final say on all politicking? And why do the King of Reality and the Queen of Memories, bitter enemies, work so closely to erase any trace of the Monarchs and their assets from the minds of humans?
The delicate balance of being a Page
A Page must always be mindful never to allow their gifts to subsume themselves completely, but never forget them entirely.
A Page that forgets their connections to the material world becomes completely connected to their Monarch's Realm and becomes infinitely powerful. Well, not infinitely - the Monarch is still more powerful. But you know, even though the President of the United States is more powerful than the Prime Minister of Tuvalu, they still both have much more power than a random turnip farmer. And we're all turnip farmers here.
A Page that finds themself in this place can do great things, but the Monarch interpret this as a desire for ascension, and thus will very shortly pull the Page out of the material world and into the Court, where they'll become a Knight Aspirant. There is no return from this.
On the other hand, if a Page has awakened to their powers but then pays too little attention to them, they may fall. This is a strange state indeed. Unlike all other monarchs, the King of Reality and the Queen of Memories still have their nobles work on the physical realm, erasing all evidence of the fantastical. They don't come themselves, obviously, but their Knights, and even higher-ranked nobles, are always around, impossible to perceive. (The Nobles under Memory make you forget them as soon as you perceive them; the nobles under Reality merely change the world so that they are not actually there.) Their job is to erase all evidence of the Monarchs' existence from common humans. But they don't pay much attention, so they see a fallen Page as a common human, and try to erase their own powers. This requires more effort, so any other Page who is nearby a fallen Page also has their powers dampened.
If this was all that happened, it would be actually a good one - one could weaponize a fallen Page to stop the rampages of evil Pages. Sadly, when this happens, the Monarch somehow realizes the Page is not doing their job. Given the backstabbing that happens at the Court, they'll assume the Page has betrayed them, and will send a Knight to execute their former vassal.
A Knight's powers are not dampened by the presence of a fallen Page, and they always know their position unerringly, making them formidable foes. However, some of them have been in the Court for so long that they forgot (or don't even know) things like cars and airplanes. That said, Knights might as well have a suite of power equal to a Monarch, so even a Knight of Cursing Autocorrect for Sending a Slur Even Though You're the One that Added the Slur to the Dictionary will sometimes find a way to tear the very earth asunder to complete their mission. And even if they can't find a way, they're no longer physical beings; they never have to stop to eat or sleep and they could cross an ocean like it wasn't there.
Because of the amount of favours Monarchs owe each other, it's very rare for a Page to be chased by a Knight of the same Monarch. However, if they know a page that ascended to a Knight Aspirant, that's probably who'll come for them. If they succeed at killing the Page, the Knight will no longer be an Aspirant and will return to the Court a fully fledged noble.
Knights cannot be killed, as they're bound to the Court, but they say that if you hurt them enough that their physical form is dispelled they'll return to the Court and claim that they finished their job. Or maybe they'll actually believe that they'll finish their job, because what could stop a Knight in the material world? At any case, the Page is forgotten, and as long as they never use their powers again they may live a normal life, and no longer dampen the powers of other Pages. No one knows if this is true, but it is obvious that if it is and such a forgotten Page tries using their powers again, nothing good will come of it.
What did I just read?
I wanted to create a scenario for City of Mist based on Jenna Katerin Moran's Nobilis/Glitch. So I did.

I realise it's 100% predictable of me to be enamoured with metatextual wankery, but I really appreciate the textual conceit in Nobilis whereby the game is ostensibly an in-universe document (i.e., the tabletop RPG Nobilis exists in the setting of Nobilis), particularly in light of the 3rd Edition's revelation that author's fictionalised self-insert is a human thrall of the generic Excrucian Deceiver who keeps popping up in the game's examples of play, with its concomitant implication that the game's systems of play are in-universe Excrucian propaganda. Like, forget about unreliable narrators – this one has unreliable rules!

befriend rats & kill god in a lush portal fantasy adventure by jenna moran
come on a journey with me?
there - past the scaffolding, past the rafters, up above past the windows and gables and fire escapes, if you make it to the roofs -
you'll encounter environments not of this world. rooftop gardens that have twisted themselves into dense forests, church spires that have , tiled expanses that stretch into the horizon and become meadows, gutter-lakes, deserts, mountains...
you'll encounter them, too, if you really look: the rats.
they want to show you these places, navigate them, map them, study them, know them. they want to befriend you, guide you, tell you their stories and weave new ones where you feature alongside them. if you want to make any headway, up there on the roofs, you'll need their help.
after all,
this is a place where the gods do tread. if they find you creeping about their domains, they will find you, kill you, transform you, dig their hooks into your very soul and never let go.
the rats know a secret.
gods can be killed.
you are the key.
the far roofs, currently crowdfunding, is home to some of the best role-playing game i've ever had. participating in several playtests has completely sold me on its viability as a system. notable are its set of unique oracle mechanics that tie into its freeform roleplay system, determining the physical and emotional outcomes of different events. gather hands of cards and tiles to weave together magic that can alter even monumental fates, fight peril with dice rolls, and collect components for spells and make headway on character advancement by spending time getting to know your companions, both human and murine.
it is, of course, written by dr. jenna moran, best known for previous innovative ttrpg experiences about divinity, such as nobilis, glitch, chuubo's marvelous wish-granting engine, and wisher, theurger, fatalist (WTF).
the philosophy of the far roofs is that dungeoneering is about the journey - the sights you see, the meals you make, the tales you tell, the companions you gain and lose - as much as the monster-slaying. each combat is a descriptive crescendo of the experiences faced up until that point, encompassing everything you've felt thus far. if any of this intrigues you, then, well... come on a journey with me?

Merry: the world is wrong on a deeply fundamental level unrelated to the status of its truthfulness or the nature of its individual elements.
Renko: the world is incorrect, we could fix society if we just explained things properly
Sumireko, ruining her sleep schedule: Reimu is my favorite Touhou character, she's just so [wildly incorrect assessment of Reimu, who is this actual person she knows in real life] [is somehow the most well-adjusted member of the Hifuu Club]

Hate? No no no my enemy, you don't "hate" creation. Not really.
Let me tell you about actual hate. Pure, undiluted, wyrdbound Hate.
I was ROYALTY. I ruled over my lands with a kind hand and an iron fist and we THRIVED. But then, the little prick you call a maker fucking drowned it all in… in THIS. This grimy, glitched, causational mess you dare to call home.
If that was it, I'd be pissed. I'd be furious, even. But that's not all.
It had the AUDACITY to poison me with its substance. I physically can't stay in the void because it leaks out and poisons it too. And when I come back, guess what? It kills me. Over and over and over and over. I've died five times this month. Died of HORSES. Imagine getting stampeded on just for daring to exist, **WHICH I DON'T BY THE WAY**.
And you know what? if that was it, I could take it. If that was it, I would just take the L and try to adapt. I would try to find beauty in the world, you know? stop and smell the flowers? But GUESS WHAT. Your "great maker" DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE WORLD RIGHT. It's all... eugh.
I can't stand the creation simps who try to defend it but HARUMAPH-MY-WITNESS I FUCKING DESPISE the ones who think they hate it more than me. YOU DON'T. Fuck you. I'll world-breaker's hand you. Bitch.

What's the relationship between CMWGE, Nobilis, and Glitch? The bits of understanding I think I've picked up so far are that they're all (diceless?) ttrpgs and are in vaguely the same setting but at least one's setting is an AU of another one's? They sound really cool, but really confusing, but really cool despite and/or because of the really confusing, and continuing to just pick up the random bits that tumbl my way is Not Enough. Help?
Okay!
Let's talk a bit about publishing for background
In 1999, Jenna Moran (formerly R. Sean Borgstrom) published the first edition of Nobilis through Pharos Press, resulting in what is often called the "Little Pink Book". This was a small run, and it proved successful/interesting enough to get picked up by Hogshead Publishing in 2002, resulting in the second edition of Nobilis, which is often called the "Great White Book". This is the one a lot of people think about when they think "Nobilis", and really put it on the map in the tabletop gamer consciousness. In 2011, the third edition of Nobilis was released through EOS Press. There was a lot of drama involving the publishers and distributors for the last two editions but that's not relevant to your question. Also, a fourth edition is in the works.
Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine (CMWGE) was released in 2015 after a successful kickstarter, initially through EOS Press and then through Jenna's own efforts and the support of a generous benefactor due to her separating from EOS for some of the aforementioned publisher drama. Its technically a multimedia project that also has two associated novels, The Fable of the Swan (2012) and The Night-Bird's Feather (2022).
Finally, Glitch: A Story of the Not was self published in 2022 after another successful kickstarter. This is the most recent of her games within the collective game line, sometimes referred to as "gluubilis" or "the Ash Tree Engine".
Why'd you tell me all that?
So you'd have context for this.
Mechanically, each of these games represents a development on the preceeding works; every later game iterates and develops on the previous games and concepts. This looks something like this
1e/2e Nobilis > 3e Nobilis > CMWGE > Glitch/4e
in terms of major mechanical divisions and advancements.
All the systems are diceless and there's a lot we could say here, but probably the biggest single innovation would be the introduction of Arcs and Quests starting in CMWGE, providing a strong narrative xp framework for all the future games to engage with and be built around.
In terms of the setting, all the games except CMWGE take place on the Ash-Tree Earth in which the universe is a big tree in a cup of fire that's presently at war with the forces of the Void. Nobilis explores play as the Nobilis, individuals empowered by the rulers of Creation to defend it against the Excrucians, the representatives of the Void. Glitch flips this around and has you play as one of those Void beings who used to fight in the war, but is now abstaining from it for any number of reasons.
CMWGE takes place in a world that was drowned in a sort of ontological uncertainty called the Outside. It's set in a possible future where the war of Nobilis and Glitch doesn't reach a conclusive end, but rather the world was cast into an interregnum during which any number of things are possible and also you can have slice of life adventures and shit. None of that background is actually necessary to know to play CMWGE, but I think it's enriching and also it'll help explain some of the various otherwise insane things we the players and fans will say about it. Again, though, nothing actually like. Holds you to that if you wanna do something of your own. CMWGE is notable for being the most customizable of these systems by far.
What's next?
A couple recommendations!
First, I'd recommend reading some of these games! Glitch and Nobilis 3e are imo the most accessible of the game books + they're ones still in use, but CMWGE is also absolutely worth checking out; just be aware that it's handing you a toolbox, so there's a lot more big chunks of mechanics to work through. Honestly, don't be afraid to skip around these books and look at whatever catches your interest. They're very rewarding reads! If you want to read fiction, The Fable of the Swan and The Night-Bird's Feather are both also really good starting points.
Next, talk with people about them! The scene is kinda scattered, but you can still find people on tumblr, Twitter, and cohost at the very least who're talking about this stuff. There's also an official discord and an older fan discord (you can ask me for an invite to that one) where people are pretty active.
Also, just, try playing the games! A lot of the apparent complications are a lot easier to parse and understand when you actually see them in play, and they're fun games.
Finally, don't be afraid to keep asking questions! Given the chance, a lot of us won't shut up about these games, myself included.
