Rico Nasty - Las Ruinas
(Experimental Hip Hop, Pop Rap, Hardcore Hip Hop)
Rico Nasty's latest mixtape is her most thrilling listen to date, a mashup of everything from drum 'n' bass to hardcore trap that her versatile voice and ear for candied production does wonders for. Las Ruinas is all over the place, but that's exactly the way things needed to be.
☆☆☆☆
Rico Nasty's never tied herself to a single sound, but it's never been such a central part of her projects as it is for Las Ruinas. Over the years, she's tried on all sorts of different artistic identities - the brash and snarky trap metal of Nasty, Anger Management's fiery bars and unrelenting spirit, Nightmare Vacation's surreal pop rap - but they've always been carved out into their own spaces, unable to interact with one another as she focuses on refining one single ideas with each project. But with her latest mixtape, Las Ruinas, she embraces the idea of a sprawling and unwieldy mixtape, jumping from D'n'B infused rap to flashy hip house to grimy hardcore rap that is wildly consistent and incredibly impressive with just how much territory Rico can cover. Las Ruinas is messy in flow and structure, but the individual songs all build into one electrifying and bold listen. With more than a dozen different producers and constant fluxes in energy, Las Ruinas shifts gears constantly while always managing to great along the way. Oftentimes, the core of the songs here is still her brash and heavy rage rap, but the beats she used to get that going are more varied than ever: the bassy trap metal of Black Punk, Intrusive’s bubblegum industrial drum 'n' bass, Watch Your Man's trap/break beat crossover with Marshmello production gloss. It's the same energy Rico's always brought to her music - there's a reason she coined her music as "sugar trap" years ago - but everything is fresh here as she largely steps away from her usual sound and tries out all sorts of new things with the more malleable shape a mixtape style project allows. Dylan Brady's beat for Gotsta Get Paid is absolutely nasty, a downtempo oil spill of twangy synths and slick drum programming that brings Rico's rapping to the fundamentals and makes for one of the catchiest songs she's ever put out, and the glittery hip house tune One on 5 sees a stronger pop structure driving the track she stabs daggers into with playful verses and a dark chorus, the shape Rico's music takes on Las Ruinas ever changing but her energy and excitement never dropping for a second. Despite its wild palette, Las Ruinas feels like the most rounded and confident artistic statement Rico's put out yet. She widens her emotional spectrum, too, occasionally dropping the hardcore princess persona she usually goes for in favor of that are willing to be sentimental and even a little vulnerable. Most of these are found on the back half of the album, leading the second act of Las Ruinas to be a little less charged than the first, but the comedown works because Rico still keeps things interesting musically. Focus on Me is the most outwardly romantic song she's ever put out, Ben10k and Danes Blood's crystalline synths and fluffy drum groove allowing Rico to wear her desires fearlessly: "Do what you want and do what you please / Just don't do what we do without me," she pleads - it's a moment of genuine heartache from an artist whose music has, up to this point, relied on a give-no-fucks ethos, Rico's measured songwriting letting her try out something that doesn't have to be so unruly for the first time. Even earlier on the tracklist, Phuckin Lady throws you for a loop with its emphasis on friendship and optimism when it's stuffed right between the fittingly titled Messy and club anthem One on 5 Other tracks in similar spirit to it don't always turn out the best: Easy's acoustic balladry takes much of the grit and power out of her voice and Skullflower's wispy electropop dissolves much of the tension that makes the rest of Las Ruinas so delightful, but these songs are still necessary as the antidote to Vaderz's aggressive trap metal and Jungle's festival-ready EDM, Las Ruinas' mishmash of different ideas still painting a picture of Rico as a person and artist. There's even a song dedicated to her seven year old son Cameron, the sugary finale Chicken Nugget, and that alone suggests Rico's ready to expand past the usual hardcore hip hop into new realms of expression in the future. Las Ruinas' inconsistent sound makes for one unfathomably consistent listen, taking everything Rico's done over the years and reinventing into a futuristic, fresh, and forward-thinking mixtape. It's all over the place in a distinctly Rico Nasty way, her eccentricity and drive to keep trying new things keeping Las Ruinas exciting and unique in every moment. While it's messy and occasionally stumbles from its jumbled tracklist and structure, Las Ruinas always picks itself back up and keeps speeding toward the next destination without ever looking in the rear view mirror, Rico trying a little bit of everything and finding out what sticks and what doesn't. What's remarkable, then, is just how much of it truly does stick, the sound of tracks like Intrusive or Gotsta Get Paid so good she could make a whole album out of them, but she refuses to stay in one place this time around. Las Ruinas might not be the cleanest project out there, but it's by far one of this year's most freewheeling and ambitious, Rico Nasty knowing exactly what she wants to do and making it all happen in one beast of a mixtape.
