positive hour: i'm part of the mary poppins cast for my community theatres production of it and we're doing Step in Time and Supercal the way broadway does and i'm in the dances ! and for jolly holiday i'm part of the statues group and we all get solos!! so i'm super excited! it's my second musical and i'm really happy that my hard work for dance is paying off!!! also my boyfriend and i celebrate seven months together tomorrow! he's 8 hours away though for college orientation so i won't see him

description: this is just a vent fic for how i felt on sunday during my last show

warnings: lots of crying, sadness, a little bit of self deprecation, possibly something else

a/n: i cried basically the entire time while writing this. it probably isn’t that good, but i just needed to get my thoughts out there. this is dedicated to my irl best friends sarah and brooke, my close friend charlie, and my tiny nerd children logan and hayden. only one of you will ever possibly see this, so thank you for being by my side for the past year. i wish our paths come back together sooner.

Roman fanned at his eyes as he watched Valerie--their Mary Poppins--fly over the stage for the very last time. Beside him, Virgil rolled his eyes and sternly told him that he wasn’t allowed to cry, but Roman paid him no mind. Virgil wasn’t a senior, and he still had two years left to run around the stage like an idiot. He didn’t understand what it felt like to know that in just a few moments, he’d be walking onto that stage for the very last time. But that was Roman’s reality, and he couldn’t help himself if a few stray tears rolled down his cheeks as Val was guided back down just a few feet in front of him with a similar wistful look.

The crew took their bows first because it was Sunday show tradition, but it was Roman’s turn to lead the first group of ensemble onto the stage in what felt like a second. As the other groups bowed and moved to the sides of the stage, Roman grinned and clapped for his friends, shouting especially loud for Logan in his ridiculous Talking Shop outfit. His heart hurt a little as he watched Valerie and Patton take their bows as Mary and Bert; he’d never get to watch Patton shine during Step in Time again, which was nearly criminal seeing how amazing Patton was to be with on stage.

His heart also hurt a little when he remembered that his mom hadn’t even come to his last production, but he shoved that thought into the dark corners of his mind.

The medley shifted from Jolly Holiday to their cue to sing Anything Can Happen, and the thought that maybe there wouldn’t be any tears shed until after curtain ran through his mind, but as the cast began to move towards their final spots for choreo, Roman’s hope shattered right before his eyes. He was halfway through singing “life is out there waiting, so go and get it” when he caught eyes with Logan, and their over-six years of friendship came rushing back to him, accompanied by a tiny sob. 

His gaze shifted between all of the wonderful people that he’d befriended over the twelve shows his high school had put on in his four years, and the tears wouldn’t stop flowing. There was tiny freshman girl with the softest voice imaginable, and just behind him was the sophomore with energy and sass for days until it came to someone applying her setting spray, and then there was Patton and Valerie and Terrence and all of these kids who meant so much to him, even if he didn’t mean the same to them. 

Anything Can Happen turned to Supercal, and the tears didn’t stop Roman from jumping and spinning and laughing his way through the choreo. His voice cut out from time to time as his crying fit became too much, but he didn’t allow himself to fully crumble until they finished the final bow and giving out director’s gifts. 

It was real now. His time on this stage had ended, full stop. He’d never be able to sing his sweep solo again, nor would he run around the house while yelling and and dancing like they were traveling on the roofs of London. And it sucked. In less than a month, he’d be turning eighteen, and just a few weeks after that, he’d be graduating. His family of four years--constantly shifting and growing--would suddenly be gone as he moved halfway across the country for college because he was too stupid to realize that, hey, maybe he isn’t ready for these big life changes, and staying close would allow for easy visits to see his drama kids.

And, yeah, Roman was glad that he’d been in such a phenomenal show with an amazing cast for his final production, but that made it hurt so much more. He’d watched the drama program grow from a place of ageism and segregation to a real family, and just as it was settling into its new leadership, he was leaving. Selfish as it may be, he really wanted to see these talented kids grow and change into the people he knew they’d turn out to be. He wasn’t prepared to go.

Roman wasn’t able to pretend anymore that he’d be back for the next show, so he made sure to get pictures with his friends for once instead of letting each show pass with little documentation. It was his last show. Logan’s last show. It was the end of a long period of his life that he honestly hadn’t expected to actually cease to exist. But here he was. An emotional wreck if there ever was one.

Hours later, when he finally walked out of the theatre in his usual post-strike haze, he promised himself that he’d spend the rest of his senior year making memories that really counted. He wasn’t going to let this all go just yet.

One of the things I love about styling a large press event or launch is that, at their best, they feel like you are ‘putting on a show’ the lights, the grease paint ... Occasionally, in pitches or design meetings I’ll drop in an idea unashamedly theatrical as an optional extra and it’s a joy when a client says ‘let’s do it!’ My love of a production started with a genius teacher at my primary school, Mrs Rayworth, who knocked a load of under 11’s into shape in some amazing productions. I wrote her a lengthy email last year telling her how much I loved these shows. In reverse order, I was in: ‘Joesph and his amazing..’ - I played a brother, Dan. I wanted to audition for a larger roll but my appendix burst during audition week. I had one line, which I seem to remember was something about goats blood. We tackled ‘The Gondoliers’ in which I was, curiously, a gondolier. (Is that correct? I mean the person not the boat) Then, Mary Poppins. If you were the chorus you had to work hard with a bunch of rolls so, I was a toy in the finger clicking scene (a bridegroom next to my bride, Nina Willis) a chimney sweep (we made chimney brushes in that weeks art class with black paper and bamboo poles) a chirpy cockney in the ‘Supercal...’ song and a kite flyer (more paper and bamboo poles) and finally ‘The Wizard of Oz’ again, multiple appearances here and having to U turn in diverse rolls: a munchkin, a soldier in the Emerald City and a flying Monkey. We didn’t actually have a stage, so did our productions ‘in the round’ in the sports hall with ‘rostrum’ in the centre, creating performing heights. Rostrum were, incase you didn’t know, carpet topped blocks to create height for various purposes. It’s a bit like Cheez-Its in that you kind of forget about it when you’ve got more interesting options available, but then you choose it and you’re like, “I forgot how good this was!” That’s Catch Me. And yes, it’s based on the Leo DiCaprio movie. -“Somebody’s Eyes” from Footloose: the Musical – I don’t really have strong feelings about this musical, but “Somebody’s Eyes” is fun. It’s a jam. -“Jolly Holiday” from Mary Poppins: the Musical – A bop. Mary Poppins the movie was my CHILDHOOD and I got really excited when I heard that it was a musical too, and I love the musical. They add huge chunks to the songs that aren’t in the movie, but they sound good and stand pretty well on their own. “Supercal” and “Step in Time” get honorable mentions, because I adore them both, but the musical versions don’t really fit into the bop/jam/banger categories. I 100% recommend watching a video of “Step in Time” though; the choreography is KILLER. -“We Go Together” by David Tennant and Catherine Tate – this is a bonus track on the soundtrack for the Much Ado About Nothing where David and Catherine were Benedick and Beatrice, and this song is such a cute bop that encapsulates the Beatrice/Benedick dynamic really well. It’s great and I kinda wanna see if I can convince a future boyfriend to sing it with me. -“Moon Goddess” by Jocelyn Hagen – this is a choir piece, and you wouldn’t expect a choir piece to be a banger, but “Moon Goddess” is a BANGER. Trust me. -“Godzilla Eats Las Vegas” by Eric Whitacre – it’s a concert band piece and I guess it could maybe be a banger but I really just want you to listen to it because it’s exactly what it sounds like and it’s HILARIOUS. -“Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance – another concert band piece, and kinda long, but it’s a jam that becomes a banger, and it’s spoopy too; perfect for Halloween Season -“The Typewriter” by Leroy Anderson – a concert band piece where the primary soloist plays an Actual Literal Typewriter and it’s great. A bop. -“Livin’ It Up on Top” from Hadestown – a BOP. The musical is one of those concept-album musicals and it’s a Great-Depression-era retelling of the Orpheus and Euridice story and it’s GREAT. -“Way Down Hadestown” from Hadestown – also a bop -“Our Lady of the Underground” from Hadestown – Persephone gets to start Act II with a kickass solo and it’s a JAM. I definitely recommend watching the video on this one because the patty-cake thing the singers do while singing is really impressive and really cute. -“Oh, the Thinks You Can Think” from Seussical the Musical – listen this musical is so cute, and I’d love to play Gertrude McFuzz, because she’s so cute, but I’d ESPECIALLY love to play the Cat in the Hat, because he falls into the category of Chaotic Good/Chaotic Neutral, Spritely Character Where Gender Doesn’t Matter in Casting (others in this category include Puck from Midsummer, Ariel from The Tempest, and Clopin from Hunchback—all characters I want to play).
