Big Announcement: Surmount, the game I've been working on for the past 3 years with my friend Jasper, finally has a release date!
It's coming to Nintendo Switch and PC on May 9th, 2024!
You can wishlist the game on Steam to be reminded about the release! Or try the demo, while it's still up. ;- )

So about the Next Fest
I played a little bit of Surmount, as it’s a game I’ve been excited about ever since I found out it existed. I love climbing games, and this one in specific has a similar shoulder buttons = grips mechanic to what’s seen in Donkey Kong King of Swing and Jungle Climber.
Tumblr media
they’re still very different games though, this didn’t feel like a copy of anything. it’s genuinely just a nice climbing game that happens to take those into consideration (I assume!)
I like it! though in my 30 minutes of game I have to confess it is a little difficult. your character doesn’t spin automatically, you have to do it yourself, which means you have to spin the analog stick and time your jumps... it’s probably something you get used to. also interesting how apparently the levels are randomly generated...

Steam page says it’s releasing this year.

Surmount a unique new action roguelike to get a port
Tumblr media
Surmount mountain climbing adventure game is coming to Linux, but has a Mac and Windows PC Demo. According to further details from developer Jasper Oprel and Indiana-Jonas. Due to make it's way onto Steam this year. Recently, during the Wholesome Games Direct event, developers Jasper Oprel and Indiana-Jonas announced Surmount. They're releasing a demo for their game now on Steam. Ahead of the Steam Next Fest taking place June 19th to 26th. And it's both hilarious and ingenious. Native support is actually in the plans, says the email reply:
Linux support is definitely something I want to do later down the line, probably sometime after launch. But I do want to release on Linux, mostly because I'm such a fan of using GNU Linux myself and have it running on a bunch of laptops and smaller server things.
While this is good news for the Unity 3D game. However, there's a slight hitch. The anticipated native build for Surmount won't be available right at launch. The talented folks behind the mountain climbing adventure are a small but passionate team, and they're facing a bit of a resource crunch. But fear not, they're working to make a port happen in the future. So, there's still plenty to look forward to, even with Proton support for the Demo. Surmount will have you get to climb a gigantic mountain called Mount Om. Imagine the highest mountain in the whole wide world, and that's the one you'll be conquering. But wait, it gets even better. You can play by yourself or team up with a friend and play together in co-op mode. Surmount is all about climbing, exploring, and having a great adventure. As you make your way up Mount Om, you'll come across lots of interesting characters who have their own reasons for climbing the mountain. They're pretty unique and kind of silly, which makes gameplay even better.
Surmount Trailer
youtube
Surmount is a platforming adventure, which means you'll be jumping and climbing your way through different challenges. The climbing is also based on real-life physics, so it feels super realistic. You'll have to use your skills and think carefully about each move you make to reach the top. There are different types of levels you will face in this mountain climbing adventure. Some levels are made by the developers themselves, which means they put a lot of effort into designing them just for you. But there are also big areas that are generated randomly, which makes every play through unique. So, you'll always have something new and unique to discover. As you climb, you'll find items that you can collect and use to upgrade your Surmount character. These items will make you stronger and give you special abilities. You can even customize how your climber looks, so you can be the most stylish climber out there. Oh, and if you're not an expert climber right from the start, no worries. Surmount mountain climbing adventure has a design that is enjoyable for everyone. It's not too hard or punishing, so you can have fun while improving your skills. So, gather your friends or get ready to climb solo, since Surmount is coming soon to Mac and Windows PC. Then after launch, a native build. But don't forget to try out the demo on Steam first. It's playable via Proton. So you can get a sample to reach new heights and be the first to conquer Mount Om.

Why are my favorite ships always:
Different but in the way that they make perfect partners and achieve so much together. Believing in each other when it seems like no one else does. Different and despite that, they understand each other until they completely don't. Some kind of betrayal and at least one of them has abandonment issues. So much emotional constipation and painful pining. Childhood friends to [insert decades long mess here] to finally, finally lovers. "My heart has always been yours. Even when I hated you. Even when there was so much distance between us I thought we'd never pull through. There's no one else in this world for me. So, yes it's you, it's always been you".
And the only two that have qualified so far are Wrightworth (Phoenix + Miles from Ace Attorney) and Baavira (Baatar Jr + Kuvira from Legend of Korra). I love how Wrightworth's partnership led them to find the truth and redeem each other, while Baavira's led them to create a dictatorship and commit war crimes.
If you have any more examples of ships that fit, please let me know.

something that I think is difficult to learn, but defined my young adulthood so far, is you have to learn to be okay with being deeply uncomfortable sometimes. Sometimes, there's something you have to do, and it will suck the whole time. But you need to do it, and your life will be way better afterward. Sometimes, you have to look at and really introspect on something that makes you deeply uncomfortable. But if you don't you'll never grow. Sometimes, it will be deeply uncomfortable to develop your own opinions and think critically about the world around you. But you need to. Sometimes, it will be deeply uncomfortable to have done that, because you won't be able to unlearn what you know, and many people may disagree with or even hate you over it. Sometimes, it will be deeply uncomfortable to be who you are, know what you know, and stand firm on believing what you believe, because it's deeply uncomfortable for people to dislike you. Sometimes, it's deeply uncomfortable to admit you were wrong. Really wrong. So wrong, you fucked up your life just a bit permanently. But god, all of it— if you push through, it will get better. You'll be stronger. You'll know why you believe what you believe. You'll know what you stand for. Why you stand for it. You'll be less attached to the false comfort of cognitive dissonance. You'll be more willing to face new situations, new changes. Talk to new people. Work with new ideas. The world opens up to you. When you get comfortable with being deeply comfortable sometimes, it's not so scary. You're not terrified all the time. And, I mean, it's not that it doesn't still suck. There's so much that pains me to think about. Deep, soulcrushing realizations. But. It becomes: this is bad. This is very very uncomfortable. But I can get through it. I can stick to what matters to me. You become able to hold true to yourself. You become able to know who you actually are.
And I think that's important. So I wish for everyone, a little more ability to be uncomfortable. We can't rid life of disagreement and upset and discomfort. But we can grow beyond it anyway.

what kind of emotion(s) do u guys write from
#*・゚⊰ 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐒. ⊱ ✦ › OUT.#i think abt tht post tht says siken writes w panic and mary oliver writes w hope n i was thinking abt#hiwatari's 'if a shadow is behind a circle then it's a sphere and if a shadow is in front of a circle then it becomes a hole'#obviously that can apply to dark + dai vs krad + sato as part of their dichotomy but its also applicable to both of them as individuals#if u include the manga bc of the way daisuke/dark's heart is. solemn and grandiose but vacant with nothing to satisfy anyone in it#everything they do or say comes from tht empty cathedral. a graveyard. the noble but desolate dust-filled underground of an opera house#i'm writing abt summer and winter but most importantly im writing abt love and light's echoes in a jet black space#i'm saying the reason dark and daisuke are always so grateful for others is because they're always so lonely#and emotionally if not socially malformed and outcast in their own ways#writing daisuke is anxiety and deep guilt on the surface with an undercurrent of pride and arrogance#writing dark is pride and arrogance on the surface with an undercurrent of anxiety and deep guilt#but anything and everything is sourced from that hollow and empty well. that 'nothing' that is a phantom thief's#restless and covetous heart#even within canon the things dark and daisuke both REALLY want- they lie to themselves lie to the audience about until they finally#either obtain or surmount it#well. anyways. sorry for tag essay#i had a lot of feelings and no place to put them 💀

You know what, in an effort to try and keep myself motivated I'm just going to start posting updates about my thesis on my blog.
I just found a 251 page book all about the Dasyclades order of green algae which is likely the plant fossils I'm working with and it's an illustrated guide I'm so happy about this. Internet Archive my beloved.
The book is 'Dasycladales : an illustrated monograph of a fascinating algal order' by Berger and Sigrid for any interested.
