#OTD (Oct. 2) in 1780 British Major John André was hanged as a spy at Tappan, New York
Image: “The Unfortunate Death of Major André,” from The New Complete and Authentic History of England, BARNARD Edward
Published by Author, London, 1782
Major John André was captured by Colonial militiamen in Tarrytown after his meeting with Benedict Arnold. He had the plans of West Point hidden in his boots. André was taken to Tappan and kept as a prisoner in what is today the ‘76 House. After a trial, André was sentenced to death for being a spy. On October 2, 1780 André was executed by hanging. His last words were, “I have nothing more to say than this: that I would have you gentlemen bear me witness that I died like a brave man.”
André was buried in Tappan. In 1821 his remains were disinterred and taken to England for burial in Westminster Abbey. Benedict Arnold, the general who became a traitor, became an officer in the British Army. Arnold died in London in 1801.

“EPICANTHIC FOLD” | 25x19” | mechanical pencil, colored pencil, paint marker, gel pen on paper. Drawing based on initial eye shapes. “SHADOW DANCE” | 25x19” | mechanical pencil, gel pen, graphite powder on paper. Drawing based on initial foot print. Artwork part of upcoming @Tappan January 31st 2023 launch. In continuation of my Wrong Women series, I made a series of charcoal based body print drawings using performance, pareidolia, metaphysical mark making and esoteric wisdom to reveal hidden forms into light as guided by my ancestor spirits.    In this new batch of drawings, I am directly employing my body as medium for the initial base. The drawings start from a chalk body print that grow into moments of resistance and reappropriation, reclamation and resignification.   I drew thematic inspiration from the longing and belonging for home, home in motion and the feeling of displacement, adaptation, experiential and folk wisdom, spirit, pareidolia in nature especially clouds, the body, astrology, novel experiences, pop culture, ritual, psychology and interdisciplinary art forms. #erikotsogo #tappan #tappanartist #newart #launch #exhibition #january2023 #epacanthiceyes #eyefold #asianeyes #shadow #mixedmedia #drawing #body #performance #home #longing #displacement #belonging #ancestorspirits #pareidolia #esoteric #folklore #astrology #ritual #psychology https://www.instagram.com/p/Cloz78hvhDL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Headcannon; because Hamilton had very few daughters and usually always sons, he was especially lenient and spoiling towards Angelica, Fanny, and Holly. And Elizabeth would always reprimand him for it.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY – NEWS FROM YESTERYEAR
#FBF
October 3, 1932 – #90YEARS AGO This Week in #RocklandHistory
Excerpt from The Journal-News

10,000 VISIT TAPPAN HOME – GLORIOUS WEATHER FOR ANNUAL TRAUBENFEST OF GERMAN MASONIC LODGES
It was estimated that more than 10,000 persons attended yesterday, the annual Traubenfest held at the German Masonic Home in Tappan. They came by automobile, by bus, and by special train from New York, New Jersey, Long Island, and various sections of Rockland County.
Glorious weather favored the event and the eatables they consumed and the beer they drank left little doubt as to the demise of depression - for one day at any rate. Good cheer, good fellowship and good humor were radiated on every side. Businessmen forgot the trials and tribulations of profit and loss ledgers and with their wives and children and sweethearts entered zestfully into the spirit of the occasion.
German dishes prevailed and seats in the big pavilion were at a premium during the greater part of the day. Pig's knuckles and sauerkraut, roast pork, bratwurst, liverwurst, bologna, frankfurters, etc., were all served and relished. There were other things to eat, but these were the favorites.
It was the same winefest you attended long before you, your temples were gray. There was the usual band concert, the singing societies chorusing German musical gems, the two score or more of lodge banners around which sat Masonic brethren and their families, the spirit of gaiety among the crowds walking about, the fakirs, the booths and the presence of politicians and office- seekers.
The home attracted 1000s of visitors. They came in streams and made a careful inspection on all floors, expressing delight at the fine appointments for the comfort of the men and women inmates, the cleanliness and general appearance. The temple where religious surfaces are held and the commodious dining room won special commendation.

"We may compare the Bible to the Old Testament Tabernacle in the wilderness with its three courts. The outer court is the letter of the Scriptures; the inner court, or holy place, is the truth of the Scriptures; the holiest place of all is the person of Jesus Christ; and only when we pass the inmost veil do we come to Him." - Arthur Tappan Pierson
