You know the post about Elros and Elrond growing up knowing that they were spared on a whim?

I can't stop thinking about how Maedhros also lives knowing that he was spared on a whim. I don't see it ever coming up while fostering the twins, and Maedhros was obviously far more responsible for the situation he was in! But the fact remains that Morgoth was fundamentally the Valar's problem to solve, and that they left untold numbers of sentient peoples to die at his hands, and chose to save Maedhros (among a bare handful of others) for... no clear reason, really. (I mean, you can find rationales, but nothing that feels consistent with the vast and marked inaction of most of the first age, y'know? It's an outlier, in a similar way that Elros and Elrond's survival is an outlier considered against the general feanorion track record.)

I bet Maedhros actively avoids thinking about that parallel.
