Quick sleeves style overview, a handy reference chart by Edo-lover Nadeshico Rin :D You can see from left to right, top to bottom:
Hirosode 広袖 - wide sleeves opened on their full lenght (cuff sometimes closed by drawstring). Inspired by Chinese attires, they started to be used by Japanese nobles during Nara era. Those can be found on court attires such as hô 袍, kariginu 狩衣, suikan 水干, hitatare 直垂, etc
Makisode 巻袖 - work clothes used by men and women alike, worn by farmers, fishermen etc. Sleeves are cut diagonally offering freedom of mouvement.
Zenimarusode 銭丸袖 - lit. “round coin” sleeve, a man style popular in second half of Edo period. Name come from the fact round part of the sleeves was made using shimonsen coins.
Tetsubôsode 鉄砲袖 - “gun barrel” sleeve, work clothes worn by men from Meiji period. Note the underarm gusset for freedom of mouvement.
Furisode 振袖 - long dangling sleeves, which became popular in early Edo period and got longer and longer as time went by. In the past, those sleeves were worn both by girls and boys (before their mariage/genpuku ceremonies). This style is now mainly worn by girls+young women.
Tomesode 留袖 - “cut” sleeves, style worn by married women during Edo. Name comes from the fact it was customary to shorten one’s furisode sleeves when married. This style is now the sleeve style found on women kimono
Tsutsusode 筒袖 - tight tubular sleeves, work clothes worn by men and women alike since Kofun period. Tightness means there is no tamoto 袂 (”pocket”/drop part of a kimono sleeve).
Funazokosode 舟底袖 - “hull” sleeve, a work clothes style found on men and women clothes. The lower part is nicely rounded like the bottom of a boat.
Genrokusode 元禄袖 - Genroku round sleeve. Early 20th brought back some Genroku era fashion including this sleeve style (compare with squarer tomesode).

"Konohagakure Fuyu Matsuri (Hidden Leaf Village Winter Festival)"
I felt like drawing something pretty (that had a winter theme), so here is Sakura with a little Sarada wearing their best kimonos on a winter day. I imagine Konoha must have all sorts of festivals, especially during their peaceful time period (after Naruto Shippuden and before the Boruto series). I based Sakura’s kimono on a tomesode (kimono for married women), and for Sarada, a style of kimono that a small child (girl) would wear on a special occasion.
I haven’t drawn in an anime/manga style in a while, so this was fun to create. I hope everybody likes this!
I actually haven’t watched Boruto in…well…gee…a year and a half? I’m so behind on the series. I’ve been wanting to watch Shippuden again. Last anime I recently watched was Kimetsu No Yaiba season 4.
Drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron pens, and then coloured in with a mix of Copic Markers, Ohuhu markers, and Koi Watercolours.
Sakura/Sarada/Boruto Series © Kishimoto Masashi
Fanart © Jacqueline E. McNeese (me!)
P.S. Fellow artists, do you ever hit an “Artist Block”, or just feel super unmotivated to create anything at all? That is how I have felt since March of last year. I haven’t worked on cosplay since then (when I always have made so much cosplay, since 2003) but I reached a total burn-out. Same came to artwork. I need to (and would love to) create more artwork, yet I don’t want to force myself when I feel unmotivated. I find myself gaming (Skyrim and Dragon Age Inquisition) more than creating, but I only play games when my son is visiting his father (which is usually twice a week). Even my son has reached an “art block” and unmotivated stage…he used to draw so much, non-stop. There must be something in the air. I’m also super exhausted (due to work and also having Fibromyalgia), so that contributes to being unmotivated. I need to get out of this mode…time to create more artwork and cosplay! Please send me extra energy!

What’s In a Kimono? Part 9
On The Second Day Of Fun I present... a new kimono! The last time I presented a kimono it was karyūkai related in that it was a geiko’s hikizuri. This one is also karyūkai related, but in a slightly different way.
Tumblr media
Name: Karyūkai (花柳界) - The Flower and Willow World Type: Kurotomesode (黒留袖) Time Period: Heisei Period (1989 - 2019) Condition: Excellent - Like New Material: Silk Motifs: Kyoto Scene With Maiko Execution and Techniques: Yuzen Value: $100 USD When I saw this for sale I knew I had to have it as it’s just so fitting to my interests and so unique to boot! I can honestly say in all my years of buying, selling, and researching kimono I had never come across one with maiko on it! You can occasionally find some obi, but kimono with maiko are extremely rare. Whoever designed or commissioned this kimono has specific knowledge of the karyūkai, with Gion Kobu in particular, as you can make out the noren of the Ichiriki down at the bottom. Overall it depicts the karyūkai at the height of its beauty in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and the maiko are busy travelling from one ochaya to the next (or, in this case, possibly slowing down to take in the blossoms themselves). All of it is delicately rendered in the Kyō Yuzen style of painting. This piece is truly meant to be appreciated up close not only for its subject matter, but for the addition of copious amounts of gold paint that outline nearly everything on the kimono!
Tumblr media
Even though it’s rare, it’s not very valuable as kurotomesode are among the least valuable types of kimono due to their overall plainness and the very limited times that you can wear them. This is why kurotomesode are often remade into other garments, such as dresses or skirts. I plan on keeping this one as is though ^^

Reviewing New Year Sale Outfits in Twisted Wonderland
In Japan, New Year's Day (お正月, or "Oshogatsu") is the biggest holiday of the year, and it is also my favorite. That being said, the TWST artists never disappoint when it comes to the art for this event, so let's review all of the cards!
Spoiler warning for upcoming ENG and JP sever event cards, including some Groovy art!
Round 1: 2021-2022
Kalim Al-Asim (SSR)
Tumblr media
Look at him, he's so festive and cheerful
This Kalim, as well as Deuce's SR, have a special place in my heart. I started playing TWST the summer it came out, but I wasn't a "serious" player until around New Year. Kalim and Deuce were my first "duo magic" pair, and I love their interactions in the story as well.
I love his headband ribbon and how it matches his obi. The sparkly hakama also suits him. I'm excited to see Jamil's version of this outfit as well, but we all know it'll be a very long time until Jamil volunteers to work retail during the peak season.
12/10 he's so cute
Deuce Spade (SR)
Tumblr media
I was surprised that this was just an SR, and that you could get him by finishing the event story. His outfit is so detailed!
I chose his Groovy art so you could see that he's wearing sneakers with his outfit, which I found funny. Cater is wearing similar shoes in his own SR, so it must be part of the Heartslabyul New Year attire. It still feels very in-character for Deuce.
The silhouette of his outfit is interesting. His jacket is short like a suit jacket, but has the sleeves of a haori. There are lots of elements of his dorm uniform, like the pins and sash around his waist.
Not only does he look awesome, but he chose to work during the New Year's Sale to buy a present for his mother.
12/10 very cool and wholesome
Round 2: 2022-2023
Ruggie Bucchi (SSR)
Tumblr media
HIS HAIR!!!
Aside from Vargas Camp and his birthday cards, Ruggie doesn't have a lot of SSRs, so I'm happy for him. I look forward to getting him in the English server soon.
I love how Ruggie seems to have picked up a lot of merchandise from around the store. Aside from a fan, which all the boys are using as their "weapons" for battles, he has a little koi bag, which I love so much (I have a similar one). The little toy he's holding is called a den-den daiko (でんでん太鼓), which is popular for young children.
11/10 congrats on getting the job, Ruggie!
Cater Diamond (SR)
Tumblr media
I chose to show his un-Groovy art, because it's easier to see his outfit.
His clothes are similar to Deuce's, except that his "vest" is red, and he is wearing a button-down shirt underneath. The mix of Japanese and Western influences reminds me of Taisho-era clothing. He looks like Kazushi Tatsuishi in the anime version of My Happy Marriage, which also happens to be set in the Taisho Era.
It's hard to see in this picture, but he has a hairpin in his hair!
10/10 he slays
Sebek Zigvolt (SSR)
Tumblr media
He looks so dramatic with his gloves and fur collar, but are we surprised? He's a Diasomnia student, after all. I wish they had given him a different hat, though, because it looks almost identical to his dorm uniform.
This one makes me laugh, because he poses like my dad. Not seen in this image is Sebby's neon-green geta, which I think my dad would love (he likes having shoes in unusual colors).
10/10 who needs fireworks on New Year's Eve when you have Sebby?
Vil Schoenheit (SR)
Tumblr media
He stole the show.
At first glance, his outfit may bear too heavy a resemblance to the regular Pomefiore uniforms, since they're already inspired by kimono.
With his fascinator hat, netted gloves, and black nail polish, though, Vil adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to his outfit. He looks like he is playing the role of a Taisho-era socialite who poisoned their lover and is now actively avoiding the police.
Either that, or he got divorced from Rook. After all, it looks like he is wearing a furisode (a type of kimono meant for single women) rather than a tomesode (worn by married women), like in his dorm uniform.
11/10. The storytelling potential is limitless.
Round 3: 2023-2024
Trey Clover (SSR)
Tumblr media
I love his scarf and hat. His coat looks longer than Deuce's and Cater's, and more like a haori. Overall, it looks like a cozy combination.
Like Cater, he is also wearing a button-down shirt under his kimono, and his vest is green. Heartslabyul is the only dorm that gets a character in this event every year, so it's nice to see that the outfits are personalized for each character.
He looks like he could be someone's uncle, but you know for sure that he'd spoil his nieces and nephews.
10/10 very classy, if he was working at the store and I came to visit, I'd trust him.
Ortho Shroud (SR)
Tumblr media
ADORABLE.
Something I've always found interesting about Ignihyde clothing is their use of sharp shapes and geometric patterns, especially in Ortho's case. I wonder how Idia's version of this outfit would look.
Ortho and Idia must've had so much fun creating this outfit together!
Infinity/10 if Ortho were trying to sell me anything, I'd buy it, regardless of whether I actually need it.
Rook Hunt (SSR)
Tumblr media
He's wearing RED EYELINER!
His outfit is quite different from Vil's. While Vil is wearing a furisode, which is traditionally worn by women, Rook's outfit seems to have a more traditionally masculine silhouette (of course, this is just my interpretation). This probably means that Epel will get to wear an outfit similar to Rook's next time as well.
The peacock feathers on his red hat is also a nice touch.
His pose and expression remind me of Wen Kexing from the C-drama Word of Honor. They also have similar personalities.
10/10, he looks like he just stepped out of a period drama. I look forward to seeing the fanarts of him with Vil.
Jade Leech (SR)
Tumblr media
Jade's card has to be my favorite from this year's lineup. I just love how they translated Octavinelle's suits into kimono, while keeping details such as the purple bow tie.
I'm obsessed with his haori--it looks fluffy. I'd like to buy five.
His pose is so...
Like Trey, he looks like someone's uncle (it must be the fedora). However, unlike Trey, he looks like someone's uncle who may or may not be part of the Yakuza. Instead of giving you money on New Year, you owe HIM.
He also looks like he goes door to door selling products, and is about to sell me what he guarantees is a genuine Toshiba toaster oven and absolutely not an overpriced knockoff that will short-circuit and cause my entire neighborhood to lose electricity.
11/10 I will buy that toaster oven anyway.
Which cards are you most excited for? Let me know!

留袖
とめそで
also: 黒留袖 (くろとめそで)
formal, usually black, kimono with designs along the bottom of the skirt worn by married women on ceremonial occasions; married woman's ceremonial kimono
宮中では黒は喪の色とされているため黒留袖は用いられず色留袖が用いられている。 きゅうちゅう では くろ は も の いろ と されている ため くろ とめそで は もちいられず いろ とめそで が もちいられている。 In the Imperial Court where black is regarded as the color of mourning, kuro-tomesode is not used but iro-tomesode is used instead.

Part 5 of the '(well now I've) scene it all' series is possibly my favouite kind of accessory which I'd wear every dang day! Arm warmers- I had pink and black ones just like in the preview pic which I made out of socks and they were such a go-to, aha. F only, Peggy arm warmers with ages added by @sushigal007 in 4 striped colours, and bloom gloves edited by @khal-ulti in 2 fingerless fishnet variations. They can be worn on their own or combined, but as you can see there's some minor clipping. you can have them binned as accessories, or as BV jewellery- the arm warmers binned as left bracelet, and bloom gloves binned as right bracelet!

Is there such a thing like black houmongi with 5 crests? I saw a picture of Tokyo geisha wearing kurotomesode, but 1 caught my eye... hem pattern continued on 1 or both sleeves, which led to my initial question. Would this be similar in formality? TIA!
Yes, black houmongi with five crests do exist (I actually own one)! They're the highest formality of houmongi, but still not as formal as a tomesode ^^

Designing Beelzebub's kimono based on @the_graceful_dahlia 's fic I also posted the timelapse to this on toktok
More about the kimono under the cut
To summarise; Gabriel and Beelzebub went off on a honeymoon in Kyoto and Gabriel miracled them kimonos to wear -- consciously putting Bee in a tomesode, a type of kimono reserved to a married woman noticeable by its shorter sleeves with patterns appearing only below the obi. The black tomesode, or the kurotomesode is considered the formalest out of modern kimono, usually bearing family crests and it's typically worn by married women in an important family events such as weddings.
Essentially; Gabriel miracled Bee a clothing that indicates this particular demon is married. To him specifically. This lil' bit fries my brain.
As suggested by the fic, Bee wears a kurotomesode with purple and gold adornments. I take this as a symbol of Gabriel becoming an important part of Beelzebub's life (also to match Gabriel's own lavender kimono). I take some flower patterns often appearing in kimono to represent both Gabriel and his love for Beelzebub. Peony (botan) for grace, beauty, and honour (pretty much what Gabriel is), Chrysanthemum (kiku) to represent Gabriel's status as a prince of heaven, and Bellflower (kikyo) for his undying and loyal love for Beelzebub. There's also bits of Wisteria (fuji) which signifies love and nobility as well. I added geometrical pattern like shippo; for harmony and good relationship, tatewaku; another pattern that indicates high status (supreme archangel and prince of hell and whatnot), and kikko... because I just feel like it. Last but not least; there are two cranes which symbolise a happy marriage.
Bee wears a burnt orange obi -- their sash colour, which I added higanbana to it to signify they're a creature of hell and there's also a subtle river patter to symbolise the river of hell -- according to most myth (but since this is Japan, so it incorporates Shinto and Japanese Budddhism underworld myth), there is a river in hell, so there goes a river in Bee's obi.
Pretty much what goes to my thought process designing this. My plan is actually to draw proper illustrations of said fic, most likely featuring both Gabriel and Beelzebub strolling in their kimono 🥰

Japanfest Atlanta 2023 part 4: me
I did a full kimono dressing, which was done by a small army of volunteers working in duos on each person. I chose full on formal tomesode, which is for married women. I think they made lovely color choices - I wouldn't have gone for the marigold yellow had I made the selection, but they have good eyes and picked colors that work well together. I also attempted to put up my hair a bit with accessories they provided.
Later, after lunch, I found a giant backdrop of the Moon Kingdom from Sailor Moon in the vendor area. These photos do not really do justice to just how big this backdrop was.

Yomeiri: Tomesode by Reiko Murakami
An answering piece to Yomeiri: Shiromuku, this piece, 嫁入り: 留袖 (Wedding In: Black Dress)depicts an older figure dressed in tomesode, a black kimono worn by married women on formal occasions such as her child’s wedding. As opposed to the ornate lines in the Shiromuku piece’s white ink imagery, this piece is completed with a quieter symbol of calm water carefully overlaid on top of the figure looking far into the background.
4 inch x 4 inch graphite mixed media in an approx. 10 inch x 10 inch frame.
