I do not “want animals to be treated like humans”, I want the individual needs and behaviors of these creatures to be recognized and for them to be treated accordingly. And there isn’t an animal on earth that wants to be enslaved and killed for food.
Cows should be treated like cows, pigs should be treated like pigs, sheep should be treated like sheep, and they all should be respected as individual sentient beings with a desire to live.
If to be treated with respect means to be treated like a human, then so be it.

I don’t understand how being vegan saves individual animals
Well, technically you could say that it doesn't, but that's because that isn't how collective action and boycott works. No individual in a collective can easily measure their own individual impact, that is true of just about any political action you can take, from boycotting to voting. Apple doesn’t appreciably feel the effects of an individual refusing to buy their products.
Your consumer choices are a drop in the ocean, but you not eating animals will still result in thousands of fewer animals eaten over the course of your lifetime, which is demand you would have otherwise created that you are now redirecting into vegan products instead. This creates more demand for vegan alternatives to be provided, making it easier for everyone else to go vegan as well. With enough people doing it, that means less profits for animal agriculture interests and fewer animals killed.
You won't be able to point to an individual chicken and say 'I saved this one!', assuming you aren't involved in direct liberation. However, collective boycott has a measurable impact on supply and demand, which means fewer animals are slaughtered to meet the demand that is no longer being created by us. Going vegan is just the moral baseline, remember, that isn't where we stop - we also campaign, we advocate, we oppose animal agriculture interests and we pressure our political representatives to stand up for animals and the planet.
More fundamentally, veganism is also just the right thing to do, not just for animals, but for workers, for communities, for food security, for water conservation, for rainforests, for the marine eco-system and our increasingly warming planet. Even if you going vegan won't make a massive difference in the grand scheme of things, that does not take away your responsibility to speak up for animals and to refuse to keep funding their exploitation and slaughter.

Epic Beef Nachos Supreme
Tumblr media
Ingredients
Taco Seasoning (or you can use one packet/ serving of store-bought taco seasoning)
1 pound ground beef
1/2 yellow onion diced
2 bags tortilla chips (16 ounces each)
1 can refried beans
16 ounces shredded cheese of choice (I used cheddar and Monterey jack)
3 roma tomatoes diced
2 to 3 green onions sliced
Instructions
Preheat the oven at 400 degrees.
Meanwhile on the stovetop, brown the ground beef and diced onions over medium-high heat until fully cooked (about 8 minutes) and drain.
Return the beef to the pan, and sprinkle on the taco seasoning.
Stir in 3/4 cup water, bring it to a simmer, reduce heat and simmer until the liquid mostly evaporates, about 5 minutes.
While the beef is cooking, add a generous layer of chips to two baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
Spoon on refried beans, half on each pan. These are thick, but I just add spoon fulls all over the chips. (The spoon fulls will spread with the heat of the oven.)
Spoon on half the ground beef to each pan of chips.
Sprinkle shredded cheese on top.
Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven, and sprinkle on diced tomatoes and green onions.
Serve immediately.
Recipe Notes:
Make sure your tortilla chips are thick and sturdy. NO thin ones. I recommend Costco’s Kirkland organic tortilla chips, or a similar brand.
I wrote this recipe with entertaining in mind. If you are making this for a smaller crown (4 to 6), I think half the recipe would work just fine. Just change the number of servings on the recipe card to adjust all measurements.

[video description: a video by thegentlebarn. it starts with a clip of people grooming a cow's snout with the caption, "5 signs a cow is truly ✨ happy ✨." each of the captions describing the signs is accompanied by clips of cows exhibiting them. they are:
"1. they expose their belly for tummy rubs as a sign that they trust you 2. they initiate gentle physical contact like licking or hugging you 3. they're chewing cud - this means they feel safe & their digestive system is doing its thing 👍 4. zoomies! just like with dogs, this is most often a playful, happy behavior 5. they make a 'purring' sound - cows do this when they're extremely relaxed and content. it's like a big exhale"
in the background is peaceful instrumental music.]
