wait you wrote your thesis on people monetizing fanworks? that sounds super interesting, i'd love to hear more about that!

My exact thesis title was Alternate Universe – Canon Divergence: Exploring How Fanfiction Has Changed Publishing.

I had six chapters:

Evolving Definitions, where I talked about copyright law and the many historical origins of the hobby.

A Brief History of Fanfiction in Online Spaces, where I explored the history of migration – from LJ to FFN and AO3 and Wattpad, etc.

The Lexicon of Fanfiction, where I talked about language and marketing with how it overlaps with current trad tactics.

Authors Behaving Badly :-D. This was wild because I got to fact-check so many online urban legends. MZB, Anne Rice, CClaire, the A/B/O lawsuit... Even 50 Shades had a lengthy footnote! I discussed a lot about ethics, both online and offline practices, where people draw the line between filing off the serial numbers and plagiarism, etc.

Surveys. I talked to five people who have a foot in both wolds, editors and freelancers and writers, and asked them on how they defined certain terms, spheres of influence, use of monetizing, etc.

The conclusion, which had a super fun feature about the Realm of Ruins disaster. I also went into detail about Big Bang Press, and what can be determined for the future. (SPOILER: Not much! Between the evolving online landscape and the increased monetization, we are in unknown territory!)

Once again, major thanks to people like @battlestar-royco, @longsightmyth, @colubrina, @flyingcrowbar and others for supplying quotes and extra reference materials. Great motivators and people!

Sometimes I'll be watching an American TV show and there's this idea that if you're treated like dog shit you'll want to win or succeed to "prove them wrong." Like on Glee Finn describes putting up with Sue's abuse as hurtful but mostly it makes him want to win, and idk if this is a uniquely American thing or not but it baffles me.

When I work hard on stuff and people act like it's shit, or don't acknowledge my effort, or some other thing I don't get motivated. I have the opposite reaction especially if I've worked hard on something and that effort ultimately ends up being for nothing- like why would I try HARDER at something that didn't work? That's a waste of time lol I stop putting effort in at all and put the effort I was spending on something that didn't work out into something that might. Do people seriously believe that being treated like shit or otherwise having your hard work dismissed is motivational?? Because that sounds extremely counterintuitive to how I feel like people work unless I'm built different and I don't think I am in this case.

Random Glee pet peeve: when people think they’re being so smart by criticizing the newbies as 1:1 copies of the OG graduates.

Not defending the way Glee wrote the newbies over here but it’s a lazy, overdone take and shows an utter unwillingness to explore the newbies’ characters. And when your critique refuses to look deeper than that, it’s not any more clever than the writing you’re dismissing.
