She startled herself out of the dream. There was no paint. She was warm and snug in her nightgown and collar, laying in her soft pet bed, her leash wound loosely around the post of her lady's bed. Exactly where she was supposed to be. Through her half-asleep haze she could hear the familiar sounds of her lady at the vanity playing with her makeup, cosmetics clicking against the wood as she picked them up and set them down.

Her mind was trying to grasp onto the dream. The paint. For some reason, she didn't want to lose it. She wanted to think about it, even though it was hard and made her sleepy. It made her sad, too. Lady Jessica didn't like it when she was sad.

Maybe she had better leave it alone.

"Oh, dear, what's wrong, my pet?" Fluffy pink slippers came into her line of sight, and Emily knelt before her lady, just like she'd been taught. "You look as though something's troubling you. Are you ill?"

"No, my lady," she said. "It was only a bad dream. This one is sorry if she made too much noise."

To her relief, her lady didn't seem displeased, instead offering a hand to pet Emily's hair. She leaned into the kind touch, rubbing her head against her lady's hand. "What sort of bad dream was it, dear?"

"This one isn't sure," Emily said. It was so much harder to think when her lady was near. "There was... paint."

"Paint." The tone of her voice darkened, and Emily instinctively flinched away. "No, no, no, pet, it's okay. You haven't done a thing wrong, poor dear, I know you're trying hard to be a good pet. It's not your fault if you sometimes dream of silly things that don't belong to pets."

Emily was glad that she wasn't going to be punished, but still felt very uneasy. The paint was important, she just couldn't remember why. And her lady's insistence that it didn't belong to her... something about that didn't sit right in her chest. "Yes, my lady." She nuzzled into her lady's hand, hoping to quell the bad thoughts.

"Paint isn't appropriate for pets. Pets are far too silly and clumsy. You'd make a mess everywhere."

"You're right, my lady." Of course she was right. She always was.

"Why don't I get you some crayons? A nice big set of crayons and a thick pad of paper. You can scribble to your heart's content. How does that sound?"

Emily's breath caught. She didn't have any toys like that. That seemed like so much fun. Such a generous offer from her lady. "Yes, please, my lady, this one would love that so much."

"Then it shall be yours." Lady Jessica cupped her face in her hands. "Anything for my darling, weak, useless little pet."

That made Emily sad, too, although she didn't understand why. "Thank you, my lady."

"Now then, is my precious pet hungry?"

Now that she mentioned it. "Yes, my lady!" Meals were the highlight of her day. It took her a long time to eat since her clumsy pet fingers couldn't use forks very well, but that was fine -- she didn't have much else to do with her time. That might start changing, though, if her lady really did get her crayons and paper. Her lady often forgot the things she had promised, as was her right.

"I'll have Betty send your food up, then," said Lady Jessica, leaving the room.

Emily settled back down into her bed. She hoped that the fact that her lady was doing her makeup meant that they were going out, that she would get to go for a walk. She liked it when her lady dressed her up in a pretty coat and scarf. She liked to see the moon and the stars. Maybe she could draw the moon with her new crayons so that she could look at it all the time. 

She was good at drawing. She wasn't sure how she knew that, since her lady had never given her anything to draw with, but it seemed right. And maybe if she got to draw, she'd stop feeling so sad.

thank you! and hm good question. I think like anything its ultimately just practice but thinking on it there's a few things that helped 4 me that I don't see mentioned a lot:

the single most important thing that made my art improve almost immediately once I realized it is that you can legitimately do fucking whatever. I think a lot of younger artists that look at like social media art tutorials a lot get it in their heads that there's a single perfect "system" that art functions in, like using a particular brush for lineart, a particular color and overlay filter to shade and highlight, a particular way to draw noses or hair or hands and while I think this certainly works for some people and even kinda happens automatically as you get better at art bc you create shortcuts for yourself you shouldn't really try to force it! I think the mark of a good artist is being able to vary these things, sometimes even within the same piece, and this goes doubly for color bc when you know how to use it well it can shift the mood of a painting a lot! Unless you're going for realism you can always say fuck it; red skin, purple shadows, green highlights. Whatever gets across the feeling you're going for y'know!

learning some basic color theory is obviously super important. I'm not gonna break it down here bc there's like hundreds of youtube videos on it but smth I recommend looking into is the distinction between local and non-local color! It'll help you start looking at art with more of an analytical eye so you can figure out what exactly artists you like are doing so you can try to imitate it in your own work. I personally learned a lot of what I know abt color from post-impressionist painters like Les Nabis, Toulouse-Lautrec, etc but you could just as well look at more contemporary art or even other people on social media

smth that helped me a lot is learning how to mix my own paint! I really think you only really need a handful of base colors (red, blue, yellow, green, pink, sienna, black and white) and should mix everything else from there. Those huge gouache or watercolor paint sets look very pretty but ultimately are mostly just a lot more expensive than they need to be, and mixing the paint yourself helps you figure out a lot about what base colors actually make up a certain hue. This knowledge even carries over into digital art bc the color wheel you have in most art programs is based off of traditional paint mixing so by familiarizing yourself with that you're simultaneously getting better at colorpicking! I used to be a digital-only artist and I saw a huge improvement in my digital art once I started working traditionally

I hope these helped somewhat! I should reiterate I'm not really classically trained in art at all and these are just what helped me figure stuff out! I've found a lot of it is just trying at it until you find something that works for you but maybe this'll speed it along :]

the following tutorial is about this gif set, in particular how I did the text effect for the word "trouble" in this gif. I'll do my best to be as descriptive as possible, but please reach out if you need me to clarify anything!

my process for this text effect can be hit-or-miss. a lot depends on the color of the text and what's going on in the gif. this is to say you might need to mess around with the advice I give, and that's completely fine!

Select whichever font you'd like to use and write out your text! I used Old English Text MT at size 100. The font color is white. I try to choose a font that will show a lot of the effect, so I'll avoid some script fonts.

2. I add stroke and drop shadow to this text through layer settings. I always just double click on my text layer in the menu to get to the layer settings.

3. I change the blending mode to Difference. I've highlighted where this is using a yellow rectangle below. Once you do this, you'll notice your text change color. Depending on your gif, you might like this color and want to stop here.

Here is what my gif looks like doing everything I have explained thus far. I knew I wanted the text to be red, so I've got one more step!

4. I add a color overlay to the text through layer settings. As seen below, for this gif I set the blend mode to Hard Light and messed around with the color until I found the shade of red I wanted. You might also use Vivid Light, Linear Light, or Pin Light instead of Hard Light. Like I said, it's hit-or-miss for me and all depends on the overall effect I'm looking for.

5. Finally, if you were looking for that white outline that I also have for "trouble," then make a copy of the text and remove the color overlay and drop shadow. Change the stroke color to white and the blending mode of this copy to Normal (yellow rectangle below). Set the Fill to 0% (pink rectangle below). Shift this text over however you'd like to show the white outline.

And voila! You've got the text effect from my gif! I repeated this same process for the word "shame." I hope this was helpful. Please reach out if you need me to clarify anything! :)

Love reading your blog! A few questions. Do vertical stripes mean the same thing as horizontal? And, also, how much of the color theory that you've written about can be applied to other shows?

I'm so glad you enjoy my blog - its always nice to know I'm putting out content people actually enjoy and not just shouting into the void, so thank you your kind words and for your great questions!

So stripe theory is very much about the horizontal stripes. Vertical stripes don't fit into that theory, I don't have a theory for the vertical stripes, but I'm currently in the middle of creating a full costume plot for all the mains and some of the regulars so that I can better spot patterns (no pun intended 😂) so I will keep an eye out for what scenes we see vertical stripes in and see if anything starts to emerge - you could also keep a note of them if you like and see if anything comes to you as and when you do any rewatching - I always love when others get involved with spotting costumes and patterns!

As to colour theory and other shows (and films), it really depends - in principle - there will be some degree of colour theory in all shows, it might be more full on or more subtle, it really depends on the designers and the overall direction a show has chosen to take. It also depends on how much colour theory the designers have studied. For example some shows will choose to go down a very specific aesthetic route and that might mean a much more limited colour palette that gets used for all characters, so it becomes much more difficult to apply colour theory. I can't think of an example of a tv show off the top of my head, but many films use it to great effect - The Matrix films and Pans Labyrinth are great examples of this.

while others might choose to use colour in a slightly different way and focus in on a specific colour which will only be seen on certain characters as a way of either highlighting that character or their storyline because they are important to the larger picture. the use of red in The Mentalist is an example where this was used to great effect - the red was either a costume, or the hair colour of a character and you would only ever see it on one character in each episode. there are other examples of this being done in both tv and film.

Its always worth looking at what colours characters are wearing, to see if colour theory is being applied to them, or if it isn't. the thing with it is that there are no hard and fast rules, each colour has a wide variety of meanings, its very much about figuring out which of those meanings a designer might be trying to get across and that is easier for some colour than others as the associations are much stronger i the wider pubic conscience than others are - for example acidic and vivid greens are very closely associated with poisons and jealousy, while baby pink (and baby blue but to a lesser extent) is associated with childishness and naivety!

Basically I've just taken a lot of words to say that it depends on the show or film but that there will be some aspect of colour theory in everything, even if its subconscious or not obvious!! 😂😂😂

Summary: You are having a hell of a day. The last week has left you exhausted. A manic depressive episode, followed by a full day panic attack, followed by a, blessedly brief, anxiety attack has left you struggling to even attempt to person today. Your best friend finds you in your room, and decides to try and make it better. 

Warnings: MINORS DNI 18+ ONLY. MENTAL ILLNESSES: Manic Depression, Severe Panic disorder, Body dysmorphic disorder. mentions of medication. Talks of suicide, briefly. Self harm. Dinner was a delicious spread of your favorite foods: shawada clubb sandwiches, smoked kaadu ribs, meiloorun juice, starblossom fruit, and jogan fruit tart. It was the highlight of your weeks, you loved spending time with whoever came. Almost always, the council would rotate, making sure your ties were strong with each member. The permanent fixtures in these dinners, though, were Master Fisto, Master Windu, and Master Yoda. You chatted about how classes were going, how you were handling field missions when you were assigned to them, and how you felt on your medications. The air was always kept open and peaceful, encouraging an honest conversation. You sat in the Council dining area, normally used for exceptionally long meetings so they didn’t have to break for meals. Master Fisto was by your left side, Master Rancisis to your right. Everyone else filled the seats around the table with Master Yoda taking up the head chair. 

Spending time with everyone was wonderful, and you ended up mostly forgetting what happened during mid-day meal. The laughter and happiness in the air was infectious and you found yourself thoroughly enjoying the evening.

Long after dinner was over and most conversation died down, the grandmaster had announced it was time for meditation, to strengthen the bonds formed and let the emotions of the day pass. Everyone gathered in a circle, sitting in the meditation chairs available. You never joined in the circle, always sitting in the middle to feel safe, even subconsciously. The seven masters in the circle were close enough together that they could reach out and touch you. 

Starting with Master Yoda, everyone in the room sunk into the Force. Feeling the peace and tranquility of the atmosphere around you helped you keep a calm mind and find your way. The feeling of weightlessness and floating flowed through you, then a feeling of gentle waves. First was a cooling blue, then a beautiful purple, an earthy green, vivid red, pink, orange, and lastly silver. In turn, every master in the circle washed their signatures over your own, a pale yellow. Taking time to focus on each wonderful color and the feeling they brought to you, you and the corresponding master were able to make your bonds stronger. Your bonds with Masters Rancisis and Ti needing the most concentration due to them not always being able to attend these dinners and work on bonds. The brightest bonds you held were between Master Windu, Master Fisto, and the grandmaster himself, Master Yoda. 

Between the strengthening of the bonds, you were meditating and communing with the Force. During one of these communinions, you notice a small dark presence in the corner of your mind. Focusing on it, you were flooded with the emotions and words from mid-day meal. The pain and hurt that you felt at the words of the spiteful Jedi Knight. The feeling of suffocation when you were surrounded with snickers and menacing grins. You quickly shielded that section of your mind and after a speedy check of the Force bonds, you saw how much stronger they had gotten during this session.

Slowly pulling yourself from the Force, you kept yourself as calm as you could. This was going to be the one time you didn’t tell anyone what was about to happen. You felt that you would be a burden to the Council if you were to say that you believed an attack was coming. It had been almost 3 months since your last one, and you didn’t want them to worry about you, again. Logically, you knew better. You knew they wouldn’t think less of you for an attack coming after the words that were said to you. But, that’s the thing isn’t it? You weren't going to tell the Council about it, and unless someone was watching the holos in the security sector, no one else would either. You didn’t notice you had zoned out until you felt a hand on your shoulder. 

“Dewdrop?” Master Fisto. “Dewdrop, are you alright?” Mentally shaking yourself, you blinked, smiled at the kind master, and nodded your head. 

“Yes, Master, of course. This has been one of the best dinners we have had, and I was just thinking about how much I appreciate all of you for the sacrifice I know you have made. “Of course, Dewdrop. Let me escort you back to your chambers,” Master Fisto replied. 

“Oh, it’s alright, Master. I wouldn’t want to inconvenience you. You should get some rest as well, don’t you have a mission tomorrow morning?” You grinned at him, and he shook his head with a chuckle. You stood up and stretched. Walking outside the circle of masters, you turned around and bowed, “Good night, Masters. Thank you for this evening. I really enjoy meditation with all of you.” A smile and a wave later, you were out of the council chamber doors. 

Thoughts were swirling around your head and you felt yourself getting upset more and more. Unable to shake what the knights had said, you quickly ran to your chambers. The hiss of the door sliding into place echoed in your head. You knew you needed to holomessage the Masters, anyone, to help you, but you felt worthless. Like you weren’t important enough or worthy enough to have the help they provided you. You made your way to the fresher, turned on the tap, and prayed to the Force that the steam will help clear your mind. 

An hour later found you clean and in your night wear, a simple pair of training shorts and a bandeau, sitting crossed legged in the center of the living space. You were trying, and failing, to meditate. Frustration clouded your mind, words like useless and disgusting running a race through your thoughts. The words grew louder and louder in your head, faster than you could stop them. It was making your head feel like there was so much pressure pushing on your eyes, all the way to your ears. You threw your hand up and summoned a razor from the fresher, determined to make it stop. The second it slapped into your palm, you drug it across your arm. The feeling was indescribable. As the blood dripped down your arm, the pressure in your head eased. You drug the razor across your arm for a second time, slightly deeper than before, and the pressure almost vanished. The words were still there but quieter now. 

Being able to hear the world around you again, you could hear the pounding on your door. Mind still fuzzy, and arm still trailing blood, you quickly got up to answer. As you rushed to open it you forgot to cover yourself with a robe, and as soon as the thought to grab a robe dawned on you the door was sliding open. 

Before you stood your best friend and Master Windu, both looking extremely worried. You turned your body sideways to hide your bloodied arm.

“Obi-Wan, Master Windu, is everything alright?” you asked as evenly as possible.

“You didn’t answer your comms and we have been knocking for almost five minutes, Dewdrop,” Master Windu started. “Why did it take you so long to answer?” His eyes were scanning you from head to toe, looking for anything wrong.

“My apologies, Master. I was in the fresher. Obi-Wan, what are you doing here?” You needed them to leave but you couldn’t be suspicious about it. 

“I tried to comm you, but you didn’t answer. I went to Master Windu and he said he hadn’t seen you since the evening meal. Are you alright?” Obi seemed genuinely worried, and it broke your heart.

“I’m okay, I am sorry. I was just meditating and then went to take a shower in the fresher. I didn’t mean to worry you all.” You moved your arm slightly and Master Windu caught sight of the red streaming down your skin. 

In one quick movement, Master Windu shoved his way through the door, grabbing your wrist and bringing it up to his sightline. Fear swam through his gaze as he watched you. 

“Hey-!” You tried to get your arm free but it was too late, Obi-Wan had seen it as well. He rushed into the room and quickly sealed the door shut to keep others from seeing it as well. 

“Dewdrop, what happened? Why didn’t you call?” He was asking gentle questions, but his eyes couldn’t meet yours. You had your face turned away, staring at a spot on the floor. You opened your mouth to answer but nothing would come out. ‘Shut down’ they called it. You could hear but you couldn’t respond. You face frighteningly blank, you looked up towards the ceiling and tears started to stream down your face.

“Dewdrop? Please. I only want to help.” Master WIndu was pleading with you, but you couldn’t answer, because that would mean explaining, and explaining meant reliving it, and reliving it again was not about to happen again.

“What’s going on, Master?” Obi-wan asked. Poor man had no idea of your ailments, but he yearned to help you. 

“We need to get her to the healers.” Master Windu’s tone left no room for negotiation, but your head snapped towards him and you violently shook your head no. He looked at you and saw the embarrassment flooding your eyes, and had to make a quick decision. 

“Obi-Wan. I need you to take my comm, and send a message to Vokara Che.” Master Windu’s tone brokered no argument. Obi-Wan grabbed the comm from Windu’s waist bel6 and found Healer Che’s contact.

“What-what do I say, Master?” Obi-Wan was nervous, and scared. 

“Tell her ‘Running Sunshine’, she’ll understand.” Your head was starting to get fuzzy as you watched Obi-Wan furiously type away on Master WIndu’s commlink. “Dewdrop, stay with me, okay? Tell me about your old master.” Master Windu’s voice was wobbly in your ears, you glanced down and noticed he had wrapped your arm in a towel.

Your vision was still blurring and fading in and out of focus. You couldn’t hold yourself up anymore, and your knees went jelly under your weight. Obi-Wan caught you before you could hit the ground and he lowered his body to the floor to hold you to him.

The door burst open with Chief Healer Vokara Che racing into the room. She flew across the space to you laying limply in Obi-Wan's arms. She quickly assessed the damage to your arm, and started ordering Master Windu to gather more towels and why you hadn’t been brought down to the Healing Ward. You couldn’t follow the conversation very well. Eventually your eyes fell shut, and you drifted into the Force.
