Shel Silverstein's Dark Poetry

In this work, I will be discussing Shel Silverstein’s collection of books that I haven’t really read since I was a child. Now that I read them again, I realize how dark they truly are. The four books I will be discussing in this post are The Giving Tree, A Light in the Attic, The Missing Piece, and Where the Sidewalk Ends. 

The Giving Tree starts with the Giving Tree and a young boy. Their relationship starts with the two getting along. The boy plays on the tree branches and spends his entire day just enjoying his time outdoors in the Giving Tree. However, as he grows older he begins to distance himself from the Giving Tree. Every so often he comes back to ask for items that the Giving Tree has. The Giving Tree gives those items because she loves the boy so much. By the end of the storybook, the boy has one final request which is to sit and all that is left of the Giving Tree is just a stump.

A Light in the Attic is a collection of poems and a majority of them are extremely dark. Most of the poems have underlying themes of depression and suicide. I want to say that the basis of each story is some sort of mental illness or issue that people have.

The Missing Piece for me was another extremely sad tale. The circle had a missing piece and so to find this missing piece they went on a search to find them. They found many pieces but some were too small, or too big, and one even shattered because it couldn’t fit within that missing spot. After a long time searching, they finally found their missing piece. They were so ecstatic to find that missing piece, but for them, they found out they couldn’t do a lot of the things they loved to do, so they decided that it wasn’t gonna work out and left.

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a bit tamer compared to A Light in the Attic. The stories are more random and for giggles. Compared to A Light in the Attic which had a bit more gruesome and darker themes in the poems, I enjoyed the simplicity of Where the Sidewalk Ends.

Any of these books I would recommend, it just all depends on whether you are reading them for yourself or children. I do have to admit, I read these four books as a child and I never got the meanings of them until now. They seemed so much more silly in my opinion as a child. Now I read them and the meaning pops out and some of them can be messed up once I finally understand.

The Giving Tree, in my opinion, will always be one of those pieces that I would read over and over again. No matter how long it takes, I love this book the most out of these four. This book has been a classic for me. When I was a child I read it consistently and would go back to it. The Giving Tree reminds me of a relationship dynamic. Whether it is a friendship or a family member, I can see this story closely relating to someone who gives and gives, gets nothing in return, and doesn’t have a problem with that. Just someone who truly cares about that one person so much that they would go to any lengths to support them and give them what they need.

A Light in the Attic as I have said before really has a lot of dark undertones. The poems each have their own story, and many of them I thought were innocent as a child, but now I see how they are realistically portrayed. It is honestly so sad to realize something that didn’t seem so dark as to when I was a child is dark now that I am an adult.

The Missing Piece was the one that struck me the hardest as an adult. The Missing Piece reminded me of relationships. Sometimes they just aren’t meant for you and you can move on but sometimes you end up in a relationship that breaks the other person. Sometimes you find that perfect someone, but it limits you on what you love doing. It shows that sometimes people aren’t meant to be in relationships and being alone is the best outcome.

Where the Sidewalk Ends shows me that some things aren’t meant to be taken seriously and are just meant to be fun little jokes passed around. I like that because I think nowadays we take things way too seriously and don’t recognize when a joke is a joke.

So fun fact: when bunnies are mad (or just wanting to get your attention) they will thump their hind feet on the floor very loudly!

Does Dusty (or his lil' dust bunnies) do the same?

He is a pretty relaxed and reserved kinda person, so it would be extremely rare for them to actually do “thumps”. And his lil dust bunnies are too tiny to really have noticeable thumps, they just kinda hop around (or roll in a light breeze)

However what he WILL do often is flop on his side whenever he’s very happy/comfortable with someone!

One fun fact about me is that I played the demo of The Beekeeper's Picnic by @beekeeperspicnic and it's brought me nearly to tears several times just out of pure like. sentimentality?? affection for these two men and this very specific little world they inhabit? my foolish heart that's been stuck on Sherlock Holmes for going on ten years now? idk man idk
