Audio
Aaron Novik - Grounded - sounds like a good old-fashioned bleepity-bloopity electronic album, but it’s actually clarinets of various sizes (Astral Spirits)
This album was made with the acoustic sounds of the clarinet, bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet with minimal effects. It was recorded during lockdown in Elmhurst Queens, NY, April-May 2020.

Book Series Suggestion.
From this two book series which one I should read first.
The Temeraire series or the Heartstrikers series? No spoilers. Like reviews of characters, story and world building.
P.S. Is the Heartstrikers series about a human or dragon? The summary mentions dragons but the cover has

I don't remember if you've posted a book recommendation list before, but I really enjoyed Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, and Winter's Orbit, both of which I've heard of through your blog. Do you have any other recommendations?
YESSS that was me, I love both of those books!! Here are some recs. These are all great audiobooks, since that is how I read most books.  The other books in the Gentlemen’s Guide series are just as good. I just love Mackenzi Lee’s writing. I really want to be her friend, please help.
Next stop on the Xina Booklist is Nice Dragons Finish Last and the rest of the Heartstrikers series by Rachael Aaron! I fell hard in love with those!! The narrator is totally swoon-worthy. I am also really into this YA superhero story called Not Your Sidekick, which is the closest thing I’ve ever read to the original work in my head that I will start writing at some point.  Dreadnought by April Daniels is another rad superhero story with queer elements, although I have to tw that one for some heavy trans stuff going on. But it has a happy ending!  Or if you want some soft lesbian fantasy, there’s The Queen of Ieflaria by Effie Calvin. It’s kind of like the lesbian version of Winter’s Orbit! OH and A Natural History Of Dragons by Marie Brennan! It’s a series as well. Another great narrator! The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a really special story to me, as well. Special mention for the narrator, who makes you feel like you are listening to your grandmother tell you a wholesome and mysterious story while curled up in bed. One of those rare stories that leaves you feeling like a better person once you’ve heard it. I feel that way about the Heartstrikers series too... Lastly, if you really want to get deep into my brain you will check out the Temeraire series that begins with His Majesty’s Dragon, by fandom hero Naomi Novik! *swoon* PLEASE come fan with me about anything you read and love. ❤️ 💕

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Undertow [Criminal Minds - co-authored fic] The very short version: Dave gives Aaron a back-rub. More slashy subtext than that scene from Star Trek (you know the one), with a little text thrown in. (The authors have referred to this fic, among themselves, as porn without sex--consider yourself advised.)
Five Times Out Of Many David Rossi Realised He Was Happily Doomed [Criminal Minds] Basically what it says on the tin. Five ways David Rossi knew that he was totally totally doomed in the best possible way in regards to the way he loved these kids. Set in the CM Kid-Verse
To Dwell In Enchantment [Criminal Minds]  It doesn't make the world any less messy, but it does make a balance, this family he has. David Rossi, coming home from work.
If I Could Go Back [Criminal Minds | CSI: NY | NCIS - co-authored fic] It's the day of Derek's high school graduation, and Jason Gideon is standing at the bottom of the porch steps, trying not to hope
What About Now [Criminal Minds] The urge to murder Jason Gideon had started two months in.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I do my absolute best to respond to all my comments - I don’t always manage because Brain but I appreciate and adore each and every comment and I mean that.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I think Let It End (Wipe The Blood From The Steel) [Tudors | Hunger Games] is definitely up there because it’s history canon and also Hunger Games but The Guarding Dark aka the one in which I basically killed off all the canon characters (Criminal Minds) is definitely also there. Oh and Hope Deferred Maketh Something which is a Criminal Minds | West Wing apocalypse fic (the surrounding world is actually more hopeful but its definitely not for the two characters)
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve ever written? I absolutely do write crossovers. I have written a lot - I was going to say Tudors and Hunger Games but actually in some ways it maps scarily well. I do have an entirely self indulgent multi-fandom universe involving among others Christopher Pike (Disco!Edition), Aaron Hotchner and my Tudors OT3. It’s kind of my niche in fandom of ‘can I make this ridiculous au plausible’ is like, my thematic statement. Oh also @bibliothekara (and to some extent @shes-a-voodoo-child as well) definitely have a British TV Shows Cinematic Universe going on.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? I’ve honestly blocked it out of my memory if I have. Recently I got pretty triggered and had to put on comment moderation because someone was spamming AO3 with comments about another authors work that had zero to do with me and I hadn’t read)
Do you write smut? If so what kind? I used to write way way more (there was going to be a joke that isn’t actually funny bleak humour about writing consensual sex here) but then Trauma Brain happened so now I don’t. Or at most I write some vaguely suggestive/sexy scenes
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of
Have you ever had a fic translated? I actually don’t know for sure if I have. I think I might have - or at least I think I had someone request to do so which was incredibly flattering.
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! It’s an absolute joy - I haven’t actually co-written a thing for a while that’s been posted but I absolutely make up fic with friends still.
What’s your all time favorite ship? OT3s. I do have favourite ships but mostly they are canon or like, I will read very very specific fics about them but I love poly ships where everyone is in love with everyone else.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I would love to say that I’ll finish Into The Fire (Tudors) as it currently stands but I do not think I will honestly. See also Let Us Dream (Tudors).
What are your writing strengths? I think I’m pretty good at AUs.
What are your writing weaknesses? Dialogue.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I don’t do it really - I’ve put in a couple of words in my most recent WIP but I think that because I don’t know the language I’m better saying something about [spoke in language]
What was the first fandom you ever wrote for? I think the first fic that you could still find published somewhere was for The Bill. It was extremely angsty and had no dialogue which is like On Brand Dot Gif.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? Such A Time As This (Jewish Anne Boleyn) because I was so scared of putting something so personal out into the world and scared I’d gotten something wrong and I did it!
Tagging (if you want to obvs): @shes-a-voodoo-child @quillington @ofcouragehault @jackironsides

I miss Vnc so much that I re read previous chapter a lot because I miss ma boys noe and Roland 😭😭. I hope they resume soon.
Oh, I totally feel this pain. XD I miss them, too! And the suffering is real...
I’ve been thinking I might reread the whole series as well, partially because we’re in quarantine and I have time, but partially so I can make sure I’ve picked up on as many tiny details as possible. I still want to write my Roland comparison and I am still haunted by numerous unfinished fanfic, so... Rereading never hurt. 8D
But, uh, if anyone wants my personal suggestions for stuff they can check out while they wait for more VNC (Yes, I absolutely am trying to get more people invested in my personal obsessions) here are a few!
Manga
1. Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama- If you like magic, witches, worldbuilding, and a plot that gets more complex over time, you will like this. A current obsession.
2. The Girl from the Other Side by Nagabe - Has a dreamy (or nightmarish?) quality. Uses simple language that ends up more powerful because of it. Haunting and elegant.
3. A Bride’s Story by Kaoru Mori- Incredibly detailed art and incredibly well researched, this one is awesome. It really speaks to the kid in me that loved the Little House books, but this is told in a more complex, adult manner and also takes place across the Silk Road.
4. The Poe Clan by Moto Hagio - It’s a classic for a reason! I just started reading this and I’m already hooked. If you need a vampire fix and a story that spans the years, this is a good one.
Graphic Novels
1. Loki: Agent of Asgard by Al Ewing and Jason Aaron - Actually deals with the idea of what a trickster god is, what stories are, and has a fantastic friendship.
2. Bird Boy by Anne Szabla - I believe you can also find this as an online Web comic. Beautiful art and vibes similar to ATLA.
3. Cucumber Quest by Gigi D.G. - This one is just a lot of fun. Lots of great humor and tropes turned on their head.
4. The Electric State by Simon Stålenhag- Kind of a cross between a graphic novel and a book. Deals with a woman trying to restore her robot brother in a ruined world.
Books
1. Uprooted and Spinning Silver - These are both standalone books, but they’re both by Naomi Novik and have a similar vibe. They both deal with magic, folklore, and they go in directions you might not expect. Highly recommend.
2. Brandon Sanderson - No, not a book, but an author who writes so many good books you may as well read all of them. 8D However, if you want something shorter, I would recommend starting with either Legion or Skyward. The former is a novella and the latter is a YA series. Both are sci-fi, both are awesome. If you want something longer, I would recommend Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, which are so ridiculously good I can’t even begin.
3. Radiance by Catherynne M. Valente - If you want a book that feels like a silent film and has purposefully old-school sci-fi settings that also feels a little unreal, this is an excellent pick.
4. The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells - If you want some sci-fi novellas that feel like really good movies with witty dialogue and a sympathetic robot protagonist, this is your series.
Television
1. What We Do In the Shadows - Superb comedy and it features vampires. I just love this series.
2. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency - The first season is so good that I have watched it numerous times, sometimes in a row. Everything you expect will be turned on its head.
3. Good Omens - Decent chance you’ve already watched or read this, but if you hadn’t, it’s very timely and is just a feel-good show despite the forces of Heaven and Hell trying to destroy the planet.
4. Over the Garden Wall - Has a delightfully surreal vibe set in an autumn wood where two boys try to figure out how to get home. Witty and thought provoking.
Video Games
1. Finding Teddy 2 AKA Chronicles of Teddy by Storybird - Super cute, great puzzles, and an excellent metroidvania. Way too much fun.
2. Anything by Frictional Games (Penumbra, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, SOMA). You will feel existential for days and be glad for it.
3. Anything by Wadjet Eye Games (Blackwell series, Technobabylon, Unavowed, etc.). They make fantastic point-and-click adventures with excellent plots and characters. Rosa is extremely relatable.
4. INSIDE by Playdead - A short game featuring a boy trying to escape unknown assailants trying to bring him back to a lab. Haunting, disturbing, and the story is told without a word of dialogue. Love this one.
Anyway, I could go on, but I’ll leave it there for now. 8D If anyone wants more suggestions, I’m happy to give them though. You can find all this stuff online, through streaming services, etc., but if all else fails your library probably has OverDrive and/or Hoopla where you can ask them to get said goods if they don’t have it already (except for the video games, but that’s a given).
I’m definitely looking forward to VNC’s return, but we can get through this! ^^

Greetings! We are new mutuals so I'm not so familiar with your work yet so hope you don't mind a couple asks as stated by your one post. So, here goes: 1. What books would you say are most formative for you as a writer? 2. If you write fantasy creatures (dragons, gryphons, phoenixes, etc.), what are your favorites to use & how do you make 'em unique? 3. Favorite type of magic system if you have one? (Elemental, Dark, Healing, etc.) 4. Would you like to be on my weekly story/premise poll taglist?
Hello! Oh, these are very good questions, took me a bit to answer them!
1. What books would you say are most formative for you as a writer?
Aaahh probably the Inkworld series by Cornelia Funke. The Legend of Eli Monpress by Rachel Aaron, and anything by Juliet Marillier and Naomi Novik!
2. If you write fantasy creatures (dragons, gryphons, phoenixes, etc.), what are your favorites to use & how do you make 'em unique?
There are dragons in the Arthurian story, but they're not much of the focus, there are fae, werewolves, shapeshifting and such in other stories, I'm still trying to figure out how to make them unique, maybe it'll come as I keep writing along!
3. Favorite type of magic system if you have one? (Elemental, Dark, Healing, etc.)
I am a sucker for healing and elemental, like for someone to use their magic to heal is honestly so great but for someone to be able to control the elements with their magic is honestly the best thing ever???? And when their magic and the elements tie to their mood??? I'M HERE FOR THAT.
4. Would you like to be on my weekly story/premise poll taglist?
I sure would, definitely!

2019 Hugo Award finalists announced
Tumblr media
The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.
Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.
I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!
One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."
