#about that whole Sanji chivalry thing

If Sanji ever hits a woman, his character is ruined forever
How I, as a woman, came to enjoy Sanji's chivalry trait even if I dislike it.
Now, notice how I said "chivalry" and not "pervet", because I actually quite enjoy his morals, but i fucking loathe his gags with the nose blood and all. This perverted size I do my best to ignore and at the very least tolerate, because I honestly believe Sanji's good character traits surpass this goddamn bad bits.
(This is going to be a long long essay, because I’ve been thinking about that Black Maria fight again and I wanted to give my two cents to his character development in detriment of my calculus exam tomorrow which I haven’t studied one bit. Also there’s going to be no images because I don’t fucking know how Tumblr works I’m new)
So, about his chivalry and the whole "won't hit a woman thing".
At first, I was very pissed about it. If it was in any other piece of media, not hitting a woman (as much as its a double standart) it's not exactly bad per se. It's not something I would applaud but rather think it's a failed flex of the writers to show themselves Oh So Manly and So Full of Outdated Morals. Regardless, not all that much of a bother. In real life, not hitting a woman is a thing and its not a bad one, since not every woman is able to GG combo a 6 foot tall jerk. And depending on how close your fictional world is to real life, this chivalry becomes more and more justified.
But One Piece is not your everyday fantastical fictional world. It's a whole ass big planet that keeps on moving with its own rules, physics and culture. A world a lot bigger than our own that expends to metaphysical standards. In One Piece, even if regular woman are shown to be a tad weaker than most regular man, its not by a lot when these randoms could die to an actual strong character to the same swing of a sword.
However, when Oda shows strong, powerful characters, they are so regardless of their gender. And One Piece has some STRONG female characters. I mean painfully strong. In a planet so big as theirs, its not a surprise woman has taken some Big Girl Pills. I don’t think it's up to discussion that woman can be seen as deadly powerful in this world as man.
But as refreshing as it is, this gender roles in One Piece come crumbling down once you add this chivalry shit.
Because when you have big women villains that can eat a whole island in two seconds, or women that can murder a whole army with one move, having a character refusing to fight feels demeaning. It’s like you are underestimating these powerful lads that can literally kill your nakama. What, you don’t think they can actually do damage to you, you fucking prick?
And it’s contradictory, to show these woman so strong and yet be seen so weakly by characters you were supposed to like. It feels demeaning to them, and it feels demeaning to you, a 12yo that was starting to really like see these woman achieving so many big things.
And Sanji is one of those characters you were supposed to like. Because he’s funny, strong, kind, a good cook, a good friend, a person you would love to know in real life. But still, he has this flaws that ick you so fucking much, flaws that get more and more evident as the story progresses.
Don’t get me wrong, I love OP, I have a tattoo of One Piece, Sanji is one of my favorite characters. However, I stopped reading for a while before WCI because, even though the story is amazing, I was getting really bothered with this whole woman situation. At some point, a trait that was exclusively Sanji’s that I was willing to ignore seemed to take this whole world by storm
Because the story portrays Sanji as dumb for not fighting woman, but at the same time, quite noble. And it pissed me off so much it took me four years to read One Piece again. Mainly because I wanted to catch the Wano arc finished, but also because I was so done that I could only pray this sexism situation got better over time and it was only a weird phase of Oda.
AND OH BOY HOW IT WAS
Recently reading WCI, I remembered everything I loved about Sanji, why I enjoyed his smile and his brains so much, and why he was one of my favorite characters ever. It wasn’t just uneducated 12yo me that was overlooking issues, Sanji is genuiely a good guy. Believe me, I’m 20, a woman in STEM that deals with sexism every single day, I’m plenty educated now.
Speaking of which, this is already very long and I really should study for that calculus exam but now I’m getting heated up.
Because WCI touches and highlights the best parts of Sanji, and fuck you if you disagree (... /j)
It called for my attention how Oda kept talking and hitting themes surrounding “humanity” in Whole Cake Island, and finally some things fell in place for me.
This chivalry of Sanji is a character trait, that even if annoying sometimes, is still a character trait meant to be seen perhaps as a flaw, but also as a product of his humanity and kindness.
Because the world in One Piece doesn’t think the same way as Sanji. Luffy would kick a woman, he won’t give a single damn fuck, and we are supposed to like Luffy plenty! Even if Oda has his lows in how he deals with the perception of woman in One Piece, this double standard morality is exclusively a Sanji thing.
Not only is a Sanji thing, but also a Zeff thing.
That scene particularly stuck with me, where Zeff says that if Sanji would ever hit a woman, he would kick Sanji’s ass and then kill himself. When Sanji asked why on his good mind would he do that, Zeff responds “It’s the price a parent has to pay. Don’t become something I hate.”
And oh, OH, what a line. Because after hearing from his biological father he would be embarassed if the world ever discovered a failure was his son, it must have meant a lot for Sanji to hear Black Leg Zeff (the best person he has ever encountered besides maybe his mother) declaring so proudly he was Sanji’s parent.
It gives not only a reason for Sanji be one of the only characters with this mentality, but also justify why he is so strongly convict with this morality. He doesn’t want to be a failure again. Not to Zeff. And he doesn’t want to live in a world where he’s too ashamed to look his father in the eye.
And, in a vacuum, this scene must have felt like a cheap excuse of Oda to not change the character. But combining with the whole Whole Cake Island (ha, whole whole), this shows exactly what type of person Sanji is.
Because, as I said before, his chivalry is a product of his kindness and humanity (such a thing his brothers doesn’t have), but also is a mark Zeff left for him. Screaming without actually screaming that Vinsmoke Judge is not Sanji’s real father, because his actual dad made sure to raise well. To make him become a good person by his own ideals. Sanji has Zeff’s ideals because Zeff is his dad, and in result, everything about Sanji is a direct contrast of his biological siblings.
Also, uniting everything together, knowing damn well where his chivalry came from, it’s safe to assume that if Sanji ever loses that sense of morality, it would be a big bad thing. As in bad, bad thing.
Rather we like it or not, his morality is strong and tied directly with his humanity. If Sanji ever hits a woman, if he loses this sense of right and wrong, it means we lost Sanji as we knew him - a kind hearted boy, a strong chef, a strawhat that would die for his friends.
So in Wano, when this “happens”, it feels like Oda warning us.
If Sanji ever hits a woman, you all better be shock in terror.
I don’t know if I misjudged Oda when I was 16, or if he was indeed telling a bad story before realizing and fixing it, but Wano feels like a redemption arc. Because above all that, we also have good LGBTQ representation that felt almost surreal, and one of the best One Piece arcs ever told in terms of story, but also, good Sanji moments, reminding us all of the person he is and who he became after WCI.
And for those who says this means Sanji won’t get character development ever, I present to you: Black Maria incident.
I see a lot of people disliking strongly how Sanji screamed for Robin’s help. But to me, it felt amazing to see Sanji actually trusting his friends. Because he won’t hit a woman, but he doesn’t need to die because of that. He has plenty of strong friends that can watch his back and do what he can’t do while he does what they can’t.
Not only that, but him screaming for Robin specifically shows that he acknowledges the women on his crew are strong. Strong enough to fight for him, strong enough to handle themselves. And also shows how he trusts them. Trusts that they won’t die, trusts their power, trusts that he won’t need to save them because it’s his time to be saved.
Not to mention the whole sacrificing thing he has going on, but that one was plently adressed on WCI.
And you have all the right to dislike this character trait as long as you realize it’s, you know, a character trait. And one that holds a lot of simbolism. I eventually came to enjoy the weight this chivalry holds, but it’s up to you.
That’s it. Thanks for reading. I’ll definitely go study for that calculus exam now

One piece men first reaction to having a wet dream about you
Characters: Zoro, Luffy, Sanji, Kid, Killer, Law
Warnings: NSFW, obviously
A/N: i am starting to think that i will put some of the future preferences with multiple parts, to give the One Piece Dilf a place too.
Masterlist
Monkey D. Luffy
Is surprised, a lot. He was dreaming about meat and suddently it transformed in your body, naked.
The cream of cakes and the juices from the meat covering all your body in a revealing pose.
When he oppened his eyes, he stared at the ceiling trying to process why you were on his dream.
Then he realized how his stomach felt strange and his pants incredibly tight.
He knew that feeling wasn't from hunger, so he let his hand travel to his crotch and palm it thru the underwear.
It felt really good, he finally slided his hand on his underwear and started to pump slowly his cock.
All he could think about is your body and how good would that image look in front of him.
When he was on the edge of cumming, he realized that maybe it he should go talk to you.
A broken moan escaped his lips while he got up from the bed, with a painfully hard member.
He needed to know if you can help him.
Roronoa Zoro
He feels "horrified", he tents to avoid feelings, talks or being emotional involved with anyone.
So, when he dream about you sucking him off with a smile, he got into a really bad mood.
Everyone noticed but nobody could know why, he got especially tense when you were around.
The end point came on lunch, when he had to saw you eat a hot dog, his mind went crazy of reminiscing all the things from his dream.
He went fast to the crow's net and tried to workout all the feelings away.
He got hard, really hard, to the point he couldn't concentrate on nothing.
After a whole hour of changing exercizes furiously, he sat down, trembling, sweating and whimpering... but not from the workout.
With a dissapointed grunt he started to jerk off, at first crusing your name with irritation and at the end letting out breathless moans.
He cummed a lot, all over his body. His only thought while he was heading to the showers was not to bump into you.
Vinsmoke Sanji
His hand was on his pants even before he wakes up.
He moans, whimpers and sights with every touch he imagine you do to him.
The vision of your breasts bouncing while you ride him, unable to touch you because his hands are tied up, that drives him crazy.
He doesn't know if he is still asleep or he is already awake, but he cums undone with a really loud moan.
He is not very good at pretending or trying to be quiet.
Then he felt bad about dishonoring you, but felt sooo good to him.
His day went crazy from there, having some avoidant attachment we could say.
He changes between being your living servant and licking your feet to locking himself on the kitchen.
You didn't understand that, it was really weird, but in fact, he gets away to hide the boner you make him feel.
He usually controls his impulses but after that dream he can't keep his hands out of himself.
He really wanted to aproach you on the kitchen and eat you out there, but he can't .... and then he feels bad about imagine it again.
He has a huge conflict between his desires and his chivalry.
Trafalgar Law
He feels ... unproffesional, he is your captain and you are his subordinate, he can't dream about that.
He tries to stay away from you, not from guilt but from embarrasment, from seeing you and only picturing your body riding him while he presses his chest against yours.
Then as the day passed by he starts to get closer to you, not conscientiously but his body someone tried to have some contact.
A little brush on the dinning room, setting himself behind you to get something on a "higher" shelf.
He tries to find excuses to see you alone, trying to have the courage to make a move... saying it to you or kissing you but he couldn't do it.
That lead to unnecesary visits to his office, helping him with some "new" projects on the lab, giving him books, etc.
At the end you spent all the day making stupid walks around the submarine and you got so angry you yelled at him.
He won't admit this part, but you made him hard with your yells at him.
Eustass Kidd
He gets up, not surprised at all to dream about you, he knows exactly what you do to him.
But dreaming about taking you from the back, all in four, his hands on your ass pressing firmly, that caught him out off guard.
He went to take a shower and couldn't resist to jack off under the hot water.
And It works, he is not hard anymore... Until he saw you later on the deck.
He is a very direct person but also a very arrogant one.
That results in having him trying to sound like a fuck boy, making you desire him and show it, before he even tells you he wants to fuck you.
Showing of his muscles and attributes, being extra confident and dominant thinking that the kind of stuff you like.
Once he realized he doesn't need to be that extravagant and just sit there and whisper naughty things on your ears, he will win his prize.
Killer
His dream his very connected with feelings becuase you two were in missionary, you looking at him with heart eyes full of love and lust. (without his helmet)
Goes straight forward to tell you.
Very mature from him, and plus having the helmet he can hide his blush.
When you go to take breakfast, he tells you, sounding very relaxed. He is trying to hide the fact that he is still hard.
He went so fast to tell you that his member didn't catch the message yet.
He presses his body to the counter trying to hide it.
He doesn't want to scary you or make you uncomfortable, he just wants to talk things.
After that, he tries to make distance a little bit to give you time to think.
But he can't help but give small glances to your body, he can't help it... and the helmet helps to be discreet.

Jealous!Luffy x Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
header credits ?
Summary: Perhaps the summer heat was finally getting to his head, making him feel delirious and restless, or perhaps it was the way the summer season looked so good on you, with sweat trickling down your neck and the strings of your bikini trying their best to keep you covered. But one thing was for sure, what bothered him most, despite his obliviousness, was the look Sanji kept sending your way and his unwillingness to leave your side the whole day.

Jealous!Luffy who sat on his special seat on the Thousand Sunny, watching intently at the interaction before him with his back leaning against the lion's head and arms crossed behind his head. The captain’s precious straw hat resting on his head tilted down, hiding his glare directed at Sanji.
Jealous!Luffy who was stuck watching the interaction before him, how you have Sanji wrapped around your very finger, catering to your every beck and call. He saw how Sanji was looking at you, at the way he was ogling at you, practically undressing you with his eyes.
Jealous!Luffy who recognized the look Sanji was giving you. Hell, it was the same look he gives you everyday. Though who can blame him for wanting to devour you when you were perched up on the beach chair, looking like an appetizing meal, tempting and delicious.
Jealous!Luffy who was starting to get restless from how you were sitting there looking pretty and taking every single compliment Sanji gave you with a smile on your face. He was getting frustrated from listening to your adorable giggles whenever Sanji complimented you or showed his chivalry. A tiny green monster forming in his heart while he sat from his seat unmoving, watching another man treat you like you were his when you belonged to Luffy.
Jealous!Luffy who will always be a child at heart. What belonged to Luffy, after all, was his. He did not like to share, nor will he ever share. These were merely the captain’s orders.
Jealous!Luffy who finally had enough. Getting off from the lion's head, Luffy made a beeline towards your direction. Ignoring the curious looks his crew members sent his way, he grabbed you by the forearm, pulling you up from your seat. Despite your protests and questions, he made his way towards the women's cabin with you following behind.
Jealous!Luffy who can be impatient at times, kicking the door open and throwing you on the bed. He can be so impatient, forgetful too, about locking the door. But you can't blame him, can you? Not when you look breathtaking with your bare back against the bed, clothes hastily taken off and thrown across the room, and your hair sprawled across the sheets, framing your beautiful face. There was no need for him to tell you what to do, it had become routine work.
Jealous!Luffy who can be so mean at times, coating himself with your slick and shoving his cock inside your warm cunt. But he couldn’t help himself, not when your silky warm walls were clenching on his cock, and especially not when he had you shivering and crying underneath him, begging for more. He couldn’t help himself when the squelching sounds the both of you made sounded so divine, or how the drag of his dick against your spongy walls felt like heaven.
Jealous!Luffy who worshiped your very existence, marking you as his for others to see. He left bruises and bite marks across your delicate skin, decorating every inch of you his hands or mouth could find. His grip on your hips never weakened, nails digging into your flesh and leaving behind crescent shapes. He continued with his assault. Kissing, licking, and biting from your neck and collarbone to the valley of your breasts.
Jealous!Luffy who increased his pace, becoming harder and faster as he desperately chased after his and your release. You arched your back, clenching impossibly tight on his dick, pulling him in as you come undone. But Luffy was not done with you yet.
Jealous!Luffy who kept fucking your poor cunt over and over again, chasing after his release. Until finally, he had come. The tip of his dick touching your cervix as he released his seed deep inside your cunt. Your name rolling off from the tip of his tongue like a prayer.
Jealous!Luffy who watched your sensitive pussy spill out his cum, unable to keep it all stuffed inside your hole. Using his right index and middle finger, he played around with the mixture of his and your cum, spreading it across your pussy lips and pushing it back into your hole. Bringing his fingers to his mouth, he happily cleaned them, humming in approval at his satisfied hunger.

With all respect, you sound weirdly over the top with this one Nami side-plot and demand way more coherency of it than anything else in the manga. You treat Sanji's love-heart gags way more seriously than Nami's abuse gags (or Luffy's eating ones or Chopper's infoptency ones), too. It sounds like a really bad-faith reading tbh. [For example, the dress line fits with Nami's fashion obsession which has legit reasons and her being used to being taken advantage of is literally her origin story, but you pretend like those readings don't exists?]
Well, firstly, this is my reading of the manga. I'm not going to go out of my way to think of how other people might interpret a scene, because that's not what I'm doing here.
Secondly, I've been very vocal about other storylines I don't like, including Chopper being incompetent, but the subplot with Absalom has been the most sustained bit of bad writing in the manga. It's going to get more attention, because there's more of it. There will be more negativity in the future when I get to other things I don't like. Fans of Punk Hazard, you have been warned.
Thirdly, if I've given the Absalom-Sanji-Nami story a bad-faith reading, you've given a bad faith reading of my analysis. My issue isn't and never has been Sanji's love-sick chivalry--I wouldn't have defended his fight against Kalifa during Enies Lobby otherwise--it is the tonal dissonance between the subject matter being displayed and the character's reaction to it. I even praised the parts of his fight with Absalom that highlight his self-sacrificial nature, even if it makes him act ridiculous such as taking a stab wound to avoid getting blood on Nami's wedding dress. That's silly, but it's the sort of exaggeration that suits the series, and fits in the same category as Nami hitting the boys when she's annoyed with them.
Like Hogback, Absalom's actions are coded with the language of male obsession and objectification, sexual assault, and rape. Both characters only only care for the objects of their obsessions because of their victim's physical attractiveness. The implication is Hogback gave Cindry a post-mortem boob job. Nami literally gets attacked while she's bathing. They're very similar characters, so I think it's fair to ask why they're treated so differently by the narrative.
I also said that I believe the marriage subplot could have been written in a way that's more innocent and lighthearted, but Oda merrily skipped over the line once he included the imagery of sexual assault. That is my line in the sand, and it is absolutely a black mark on both Sanji and the series as the whole that Oda decided to highlight the similarities between he and Absalom instead of their differences. It moves the character from chivalrous dweeb to sex pest, and it's a decision he's doubled down on many times as the series progresses.
Nami being okay with being forcibly changed into a wedding dress after being drugged into unconsciousness by someone who tried to attack her because she "is fashion obsessed" is patently absurd, as is her being "used to it" because of her past. What I was trying to express is that it would have been nice if Nami had gotten as angry at what Absalom did to her as she did when Lola was attacked. Perhaps I didn't express myself well in that regard, but all in all I stand by my criticisms.

Hi! How are you doing?
Can i request B, M, Q with Sanji, Nami and Zoro?
if possible gn reader please!
I'm great, thanks for asking!! And thank you so much for being my first request!! ^^ (so sorry this took so long, i honestly forgot this account existed T_T)
Tumblr media
(B) Boo! – How do they feel about surprises, giving and receiving?
Sanji loves buying gifts for his partner and planning surprises for them, so they receive them often. From the smallest of things to the most extravagant of things, if something makes him think of his beloved then it's theirs no matter the price. Of course it's not just about buying them things, their reaction to his gifts make him fall in love with them all over again. It's also his way of showing he was thinking of them. The same with surprises, whether it be their favorite food, prepping them a warm drink on a chilly morning, flowers on their bedside table, Sanji does it all. It's little reminders throughout their day how much he cares for them.
But Sanji receiving gifts and surprises is a whole other story. He's very rarely, if ever, been on the receiving end of them so it's no surprise he's a bit stumped and emotional. His partner gives him a coat when it's cold out? One of those key-chains with his initial on it? Hell, a cool looking shell they found on the beach? Not only has he fallen unbelievably more in love with them, but he's also... touched in a way no one else has made him feel. His Y/N gave him a gift, his Y/N was thinking about him. Now usually he's go off swooning as usual, but this was... different.
Arriving back to the Going Merry, Sanji was relieved to see no sign of his crew members. Finally, he could start dinner preparations in peace and quiet. Right as he sat down the food he bought earlier, a pang of annoyance hits him as the kitchen door opens with a squeak. He turns around and before he could tell whoever it was to go away, the annoyance quickly melts away and is replaced with adoration as his eyes land on his beloved. "Oh, Sanji! I didn't think anyone else was back yet." They say, allowing Sanji to take the bags from their hands once he snapped out of his daze. "Here, let me get those for you my love." His partner smiles lightly at his chivalry, watching as he takes the bags and set them down with the utmost care on the dining room table. "Oh wait, I almost forgot! I have something for you." Sanji does a bit of a double take as he watches his partner dig through the bags. Something for him..? Did he hear them right? He's pulled from his thought by his lover standing in front of him with a smile, holding a small, wrapped package in their hands. He stares at the packing, blinking in confusion for a moment before taking it with a gulp. Sanji pulls away the tape and paper with gentle hands and the utmost care, not wanting to rip a single corner of the wrapping paper his beloved had taken the precious time to wrap. His hands were unusually sweaty, heart thumping in his chest. Sanji's thoughts whirled so quickly in his brain he was barely able to process anything besides the box in his hands and his lover in front of him. His partner stood patiently, allowing Sanji to take his time to open the gift which was a simple act of affection from their part, but meant the absolute world and more to Sanji. After what felt like a millennium, the box was finally opened and inside lay a golden chain with a small, golden pendant of his lovers initial. "I know it's impractical for fighting, you don't have to wear it. With all of the gifts you give me I thought it would be nice t-" Their rambling is cut short by Sanji suddenly enveloping them in a tight hug, his chest felt tight with emotion. "I'll wear it till the day I die, mon coeur."
(Q) Quiet – How are the calm, quiet moments with them?
Quiet moments with Sanji. Gosh, to say they're perfect would be an understatement. The crew is... loud. Everyone knows it. So the only time Sanji and his partner have quiet time is at night, or when docked on an island where the two of them can either stay behind on the ship or explore the island together. Whichever you choose, Sanji would be by his lovers side the entire time with his full undivided attention. If they're exploring an island together, they're the only person in the world that he's focused on and if anyone dares break that focus they're met with the nastiest glare known to man. (think the ones he gives Zoro.) But some of his favorite quiet moments (that he'd never admit) are nights where he has watch duty and his partner insists on joining him, despite arguing that it's too cold out or they need their beauty sleep. They'd give him the excuse that they couldn't sleep or thought he needed a blanket, which is just another excuse to cuddle close to him in said blanket. (like they would ever need an excuse for that) His partner would sit between his legs, curled up against his chest with the blanket keeping the both of them nice and cozy and Sanji would listen to whatever sleepy nonsense comes from their lips before drifting off to sleep. Sanji's heart swells as he's the happiest guy in the whole world, looking up at the stars and holding his lover securely... God help any marine or pirate ship that interrupts this moment.
Tumblr media
(M) Melt – What do you do that absolutely makes them melt?
Unlike Sanji, Zoro isn't one to have those melty-swoony moments, at least not to that capacity. There's certainly times where he finds himself in his head about them, watching them do whatever it is they're doing or thinking about little things they do while he trains. They're almost always on his mind. Speaking of training, one thing his partner does that makes him somewhat melt is when he catches them training. Knowing that his partner can take care of themselves when need-be adds an extra layer of comfort and security in Zoro's mind, which is why their relationship flows so smoothly. He cant help the little smirk that tugs at his lips when his eyes find them in the midst of fighting whatever problem they found themselves in, or whenever he catches them training. Don't be surprised if he asks to join them, knowing full well that training together leads to sparring, and sparring leads to... well, let's leave that up to the imagination.
(Q) Quiet – How are the calm, quiet moments with them?
Quiet moments are actually quite common with Zoro, as spoken words isn't the swordsmans strong suit when it comes to love languages. The first time his partner accidentally walked in on him while he was meditating, rather early on in the relationship, they felt awkward about interrupting him. While trying to quietly trying to exit the room, without opening an eye he'll tell them "Don't just stand there, get over here and sit down already." He especially loves when his partner joins him in his naps. Whether it be to nap with him or read a book while he sleeps their company is always welcome. He'll wrap an arm around them and pull them close, then go right back to snoring away with them securely in his arms. He may me a man of few words, but they'll damn know they're always welcomed and wanted.

Thank you for responding to my SP vs SN comment! Your response was more than I expected and so much appreciated. :)
One thing that really stood out to me about SN relationship was regarding Sanji fear of never being good enough for being himself. The interesting thing about Nami is that 1) she understands his kindness (her comments to his brothers) 2) she respects his values (choosing to fight Kalifa) 3) she's willing to put herself in harms way to fight for him (WCI, Water 7). It's not to say Robin or Vivi or any of the Straw Hats don't show these things but Nami definitely has some distinct examples.
Pudding and even to an extend Viola have mocked him for his weakness for women, even though both women have changed their perspective on him later. So compare to Nami, it's really hard to root for them. I think Nami might have thought he was a bit of an idiot in the beginning and may have taken advantage of him from time to time but it was never an outright mockery.
Anyway I guess what I'm trying to say it's so hard not to love these two when you really look into who they are and what they stand for. Apologies for the wall of text, I get a bit carried away when I think about these two.
No problem at all! I love talking about SaNami and One Piece and you brought up interesting points. I'm sorry if I can't answer everything straight away, tho. During week days, because of my work and college, it takes me a while to sit and write a good response. So I hope you don't mind if I delay the answers once in a while.
You are so right. I feel like Nami is one of the female character who is chosen to support and understand Sanji more than the others. Ofc, we have Robin and Vivi, like you said, but I don't think any of them has so many scenes of being suportive of Sanji like Nami does.
For example, we all know Robin understands Sanji and would be supportive of resuing him just as Luffy was, but out of the girls, Oda chose only Nami to go to Whole Cake. I also will never forget the fact how, after Sanji was taken by Capone, she seemed so worried and sad and eager to rescue him.
"Pudding and even to an extend Viola have mocked him for his weakness for women, even though both women have changed their perspective on him later."
Okay, this part actually breaks my heart. I feel really bad for Sanji in moments like this, but at the same time it just shows how much of an amazing person he is.
But yes, I don't recall Nami mocking him. She uses a bit of his weakness toward women, but she does that with everyone tbh (she's seductive, it's a part of her character). And I don't remember her being cruel nor downright disrespectful to him about it. Sometimes, his antics can annoy her who can blame her, I sometimes do think his gags are too much as well), but she never uses it to put him in harms way.
It also reminds me of Oda's SBS about how Nami chose to respect Sanji for his chivalry. It's very interesting how, instead of mocking him, she was her angry at the fact that he might get himself killed for his chivalry. And once he firmly stated he would never kick a woman, even if it killed him, she saw how much a strong-willed man he truly was.
Don't worry about the wall of text!
And yes, that's why this ship is so interesting to me. Just like Sanji treats Nami the way she likes to be treated (with care and like a princess hehe), Nami understands and accepts Sanji for who he is - the only thing she is not aware of is how important she is to him though. Besides that, both can read the other very well, and know when something is off with the other.
They are amazing, and it IS difficult not to love them. Let's ship and see what the future holds.

I keep saying this, but as (at times) inconsistent One Piece has been through the years, Sanji remains the best written character in the series.
Looking back, his every bit of mannerism was already telling us everything we needed to know, and I’m still so proud to have foreshadowed his mental state years before his story was revealed.
I’ll write a more in depth analysis eventually, but starting from the Baratie Restaurant, we learn of this introverted, “cool” chain smoker, who wears a suit and accepts no disrespect towards food, or his adoptive father.
He speaks in a very hushed tone, and seems to put up this image for every bit of his personality and appearance. A carefully crafted exterior, which occasionally breaks when he shows excitement talking about his dream of “All Blue”. It’s as though he made the conscious choice to censor as much of himself as possible, convincing himself that the few characteristics he does show are the only acceptable ones. These are mainly his chivalry, and relationship with food, which are more values than personality. Even his skill with cooking stems from a deep seated need for control, where not one, but two metaphors involving starvation, lead us to imagine a possible eating disorder.
He is willing to sacrifice himself immediately out of the idea he is indebted to his father, and refuses to leave the Restaurant where he grew up, despite his dream. This is very important, because it makes the viewer stop to think for a moment.
Feeling indebted is understandable, but to put one’s own life at a complete halt due to an act of kindness at the hands of someone else already gave us a huge clue as to Sanji’s upbringing. Before Zeff, he was a child surrounded by a biological family who left him mentally and physically destroyed. In such circumstances, he grew without the fundamental concept of worth.
Therefore, any act of kindness would equal an insurmountable level of debt he would need to pay off. And seeing how he perceives himself as worthless, he often relies on sacrificing himself for the benefit of others.
I presume Zeff suspected as such, despite Sanji never mentioning anything, and purposefully kicks him out of the Restaurant, pushing him to fulfill his dream, and above all, live his life. What Sanji had to experience and understand throughout the journey, is how others care for him as well.
However, trauma so severe couldn’t possibly heal that quickly, and I’ve said before how impressed I am with Oda’s approach with depicting trauma in such detail (Sanji’s panic attacks at the thought of seeing his family, twitching, sweating, snapping, chain smoking, etc). Despite the years of bonding, affection, taking care of the crew’s basic needs, trusting them blindly, he still subconsciously believes to be interchangeable. The idea of being able to rely on them for anything substantial, especially against the titanic level where his family stands, is inconceivable. This was further implemented by his trauma, where victims of abuse catastrophize the power of their abusers.
His affection towards his biological family despite the abuse however, is the most difficult challenge to face. Fundamentally, he believes to have a chance still at redeeming himself in their eyes, perhaps as an adult. His punishment, someway somehow being rational and understandable, if he could only figure out what the right thing to do is.
Once he understands there is no answer to that question, is when he finds freedom. However, this realization is devastating.
He chooses to save his biological family, with the condition of never interacting with them again, his mind free of doubt over how no father would wish for his own son’s death.
This is where Whole Cake Island ends. Sanji joins the crew once more, with a newfound sense of self worth and from any Shounen we’d expect that to be the end of it.
But it isn’t. Because trauma doesn’t work like that, and Oda knows. Despite his determination, Sanji consistently shows signs of not only being tied to his family (politically or metaphorically), but shows constant anxiety over becoming anything like them, perpetuating the cycle of a put up personality.
While Sanji is aware of his found family and their affection, it will take time to fully break free from the vicious cycle of depression and panic he falls back into.
Now, looking at fictional characters as means to tell a story, Oda was making a statement. He wanted to give anyone struggling, anyone who at one time felt their life slipping away, anyone who considered suicide, a fighting chance, by using his privilege as artist and writer with the biggest platform.

my thing with Sanji is that I don't mind him being a goober who fantasizes about and tries (and fails) to hit on women, it fits with his whole knightly delusion and Romantic ideas about chivalry, etc., gives him a notable flaw to match the rest of the crew, and is often genuinely good comic relief (in the aftermath of Arlong Park he tries to swan-dive into a hug with Nami's sister only to be royally curved, and it's hysterical).
it's just that like, there was a steady replacement of his characterization. we get a slow slide from "Sanji is a wannabe knightly ladies' man with a lot of other good qualities" in the first third of the series, to "Sanji is a perverted pest with no other traits" from around Thriller Bark through Dressrosa. the former is a potentially funny character and ties into his unique personality and personal history, the latter is both insufferable AND hackneyed. I'm glad there's been some course-correction in recent years, at least

🔥 sanji. have fun, clown
Ithere's no real way to "fix" Sanji without acknowledging that misogyny is such a core aspect of him and that that is what needs to be worked on before anything else. No, seeing him as bisexual or gender troubled doesn't change the fact that he's shit to women. No, saying shit like he wants to get pegged or any other breaking masculinity thing doesn't change the fact that he's shit to women.
I'm saying this as someone who absolutely loves him: I don't want justifications or workarounds, I want him to be better, I want him to return to the way he used to be at the beginning. If Oda like genuinely tried to reign in the pervert gags I think I would be ok with his chivalry shtick and the "not hitting women" part of him, but as it stands I have spent half the timeskip as a Sanji fan wondering why the fuck his stupid gag aspect became so pervasive that unless a whole arc is focused on him, he doesn't even feel like a character anymore.
And I really, really hate 80% of the gender discussion surrounding him. "What if he was a girl" WELL FIRST OF ALL WE SHOULD ALL THINK REALLY HARD ABOUT WHAT IT WOULD MEAN IF ODA MADE THE #1 PERVERT GAG CHARACTER A TRANS WOMAN AND A GAY WOMAN NONETHELESS. ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE BACKGROUND ODA HAS AROUND WRITING GNC CHARACTERS. MAYBE WE SHOULD REFLECT ON THIS BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE.

Thinking about Pact/Pale Strawhats, very rough ideas. Spoilers for all probably.
ZORO: Lost Swordsman, emphasis on Lost. Originally just a regular peter-pan-esk Lost Boy on a 'ninja's vs pirates' path where you had to manipulate and set up fights to progress, a group of finders managed to break the path by permanently killing Lost to manipulate the bracket to be smaller so it was easier to get through. Kid Zoro was forced to be the 'greatest swordsman' and then easily defeated by the path runner so many times the path lost enough power to give away boons, collapsing around Zoro who only survived by swearing an Oath to the universe that he would earn his title for real. Haven't decided if Kuina fits in better as a path runner here and Zoro exists as some sort of wolf/mirror/whatever entity made on the path for her as a worthy opponent, or if she would just be another Lost.
NAMI: Former aware turned elementalist? Can't get too much into her deal without getting into the Fishmen question.
USSOP: Blackguard of the group, the liar. Kuro was a practitioner trying to use magic to rise in innocent status, karma used Ussop as a tool to balance things out, and it left him aware. Maintains innocence as he's still scared of whatever regular thing the universe hides magic stuff as. Uses magic items and guns as he can't actually Practice.
SANJI: Bogyman - "Blackleg". Sanji gets forgotten in the basement and without any human connections, gets claimed by the abyss. He latches onto an outdated form of chivalry and romance and the need to feed people as ways to crawl out, turning into a sort of urban legend about a man in black suit that kicks men to death who violate his personal principles: hurting women or wasting food.
CHOPPER: Divine Reindeer. Regular reindeer that ate a bit of divine essence and became a very small, very nervous godling(? similar to Tashlet in Pale) with access to Creation, manifesting in his multiple forms. Originally a familiar to Hiriluk, using the stability of the familiar ritual to stop Chopper from changing constantly form and Hiriluk trying to stave off his fatal illness with Choppers divinity.
ROBIN: Originally I thought Diabolist (Demon child, whole world wants her dead, suffering) but the aesthetics of a Horror fit so much better. Has a similar deal to the Horror gal in Pale, only Robin escaped her family after trying to subtly leak how their practice worked to the world. She obscured her Self from tracking attempts by hiding in Baroque Works. Crocodile is a Collector of people similar to Bristow. Maybe her family used Demons to Destroy the memory of how exactly they pulled off the Horror trick?
FRANKY: Hyde/Technomancer. He is the guy that Essentials warns you about, trying to combine Familiars and Demesnes and Implements into the same thing. Thousand Sunny is a mad max sort of train-bus-camper, which he powered up with every single one of the three main rituals, forcing himself to Hyde into Battle Franky if he wants to get anything done outside of it (Or maybe Hyde back into Cutty Flam, with Frankly bound to the Thousand Sunny?)
BROOK: He's just like that
JINBE: ??? Honestly I don't know how to resonate Oda Fishmen Allegory with Wildbow Others Allegory without pratfalling down a metaphorical set of stairs where every stair is a landmine. Oni?
LUFFY: He's also just like that

I wanna talk about Whole Cake Island too!
So, I’m reading Whole Cake Island right now. And I have THOUGHTS about Sanji and Luffy’s “”””fight””””. And it’s probably nothing anyone hasn’t said before but I’m gonna write it out anyway.
(TL;DR Sanji and Luffy fight and it hurts because they both go for the throat. Also Nami has been through this shit I am surprised she’s putting up with Sanji trying to leave in the slightest.)
So first, yeah, I’m screaming into a pillow because this shit is rough. Let’s get those personal emotions out of the way first.
Sanji’s whole thing is that he cares and serves, right? His love language is acts of service and that’s primarily shown through feeding people. When we meet the Vinsmokes (I shall not be referring to them as his family) we see pretty quickly that they are the antithesis to everything Sanji is.
The men are literally said to lack the ability to sympathize or empathize. Not only do we see this is the case, but Reiju says so herself:
They do not value cooking nor food. Judge tells Sanji to never cook again, Niji wastes food.
And, of course, the brothers have no qualms about hitting women. The whole chivalry/won’t hit a women thing is a huge can of worms I don’t feel like unpacking in part because I don’t feel like I could talk about it without discussing women’s power levels and roles in One Piece. And I’ve already digressed too much.
So yeah, the Vinsmokes are the opposite of Sanji and hold none of his values. In fact, they may be why he holds some of his values, because they are as far from the Vinsmoke’s values as possible.
Okay so the two chapters in particular when Luffy and Nami find and confront Sanji!
Pretty immediately we see that 1. Sanji was not expecting them, 2. He’s distressed that they’re here, and 3. It complicates things for him.
Like, that is not a face of someone happy to see his friends who have come to save him. That is an “oh fuck” face. (And as a sidenote, yeah, it’s a whole lot harder to sacrifice yourself when you’re confronted with the people you’re leaving behind, HUH, SANJI????)
Tumblr media
Luffy’s all happy to see him, feels like they’ve accomplished their goal, doesn’t question that Sanji would want to come back. And he’s got things to do! Like save Wano and beat up Kaido! Chop chop Sanji let’s go on adventures! Plus, I would think that Luffy would also have the expectation of his crew that they understand that no one gets to leave if they’re doing it to sacrifice themselves. He’s already shown he’s gonna come get you and Sanji knows this. Sanji’s first arc with them after Baratie was going to save Nami from Arlong and her self-sacrificial bullshit! Luffy’s modus operandi is saying “Oh, you thought you were in a lose-lose situation and the only solution was to sacrifice your happiness and well being? Fuck that! You’re my nakama, let me save you!”
Tumblr media
Both Luffy and Nami aren’t questioning Sanji’s wanting to come with them. They’re here, it’s time to go!
Tumblr media
And so then we see the surface level reasons why Sanji would say “No, I can’t go with you.” And we also see that he knows Judge is watching him.
Tumblr media
I don't think Nami's buying it either. She's done this. She knows what it's like to be trapped by circumstances, to have your loved ones held hostage. And she did this shit too! She fuckin laid it down, lied to her nakama about it all being a farce in her efforts to keep them out of her dangerous situation! Maybe the words sting, but I think this face of hers is even more from her thinking about how they all know eachother so much more, and know how Luffy wouldn't leave one of them behind. So Sanji must be under some real duress right now. Like, I feel like she could extrapolate a lot from what he's saying because she knows that's not who he is. And because she's tried the same shit. And, I wonder if she’s hurting for him because she knows what it’s like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every chance she gets, she reiterates that there was nothing between them, that she doesn’t care about them, that she tricked them, and even uses her supposed killing of Usopp as support of her betraying them. She is desperately trying to get them off this island. Arlong is well covered, we all know what’s up.
And, the parallels are pretty clear for Sanji. He’s got family being held hostage (Zeff, and the Strawhats too), and he couldn’t leave anyway because he’s got explosion bracelets on. Plus he’s got his own self-sacrificial streak (which I could guess comes from being raised in a household where you’re told you don’t have any value and everything you do is wrong-the fact that Sanji still cried at Judge’s rejection of him right before his escape speaks to how as a child he still wanted Judge’s approval and love as a father).
So, he comes out swinging with the thing that we previously established would be the shittiest thing to say, that Luffy rejected the possibility of him saying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then he starts on this buckwild speech that is so fucking hammed up I almost questioned if Sanji meant for them to understand the opposite of his words, and was just putting on a show for the Vinsmokes.
Tumblr media
Nami only says he’s going too far when Sanji starts insulting Luffy’s dream, which the whole crew believes in and supports.
Also, as a side note, it doesn’t really make sense to me that Nami would just take on the role of “you’re going too far, you can’t believe what you’re saying!” Maybe Chopper would do that cuz he’s gullible and shit. BUT NAMI FREAKIN DID THE SAME SHIT. I would almost expect a “...” speechbubble from her and later her saying something like “He really tried his best to make that look convincing, didn’t he? He’s not very good at it.”
Nami’s savvy!
But anyway, yeah, Sanji tries to go for the throat to push thme away saying shit about Luffy not being able to become the Pirate King. My first reaction to this whole thing was:
“WOW HE'S REALLY DOING IT, HUH? HE'S LYING THROUGH HIS TEETH TO SAY THE MOST HURTFUL SHIT HE CAN TO HIS LOVED ONES SO THEY'LL STAY AWAY SO HE CAN SACRIFICE HIMSELF TO STOP ANYONE FROM GETTING HURT”
Usopp has tried to leave too, but his situation was different. His reasons were stated clearly and he didn’t try to pretend that all the shit they’ve gone through together and the bonds they’ve formed were fake. Nami, Robin, Sanji? They try to do the “ah, I never loved you” bullshit.
But Sanji’s is the first time that from the get-go, the audience knows before the confrontation everything that’s going on for the crewmember trying to fake betrayal. With Nami and Robin, we didn’t learn their backstories until after they tried to push people away. With Sanji not only did we get it beforehand, but when Luffy and Nami show up, we are shown the three pieces of information that Sanji thinks about and that motivate him to push his crewmates away:
His hands (his treasures) are bound and threatened.
His nakama are threatened.
Zeff is threatened.
He’s backed into a freakin corner! And he know’s Luffy’s track record on crew members trying to leave! So he goes for the throat and when that doesn’t work (or for the whole performance he’s putting on for the Vinsmokes) he attacks Luffy.
Luffy says he won’t fight Sanji, and I wonder if this is because of Water 7 and Usopp. That fight was so fucking painful, I wonder if Luffy vowed to never fight someone like that again?
Clearly he isn’t getting through to Sanji, even though, to him, Sanji should know what the deal is by now.
So he goes for the throat himself! Which is honestly just heartwrenching on Oda’s part and pretty unfair on Luffy’s part. Though, when has Luffy ever been fair lol. His whole crew agrees his selfishness levels are above emperor!
This page pretty much sums it up:
Tumblr media
Also, throughout this entire encounter we get glimpses of Sanji thinking about the crew and meeting Luffy, which is cool to see his internal world somewhat. When Luffy first shows up. I mean. Look at the pain on his face.
Tumblr media
This is not a “we have a difference in ideals and are fighting over it and I’m thinking about how we met because I regret that it’s come to this.” fight. It’s not even a fight. It’s Sanji desperately saying “Please leave before you die because of me!”
Actually, maybe it is kind of a fight of ideals because Sanji is fighting to say “leave me behind I’m not worth it” and Luffy’s saying “yes you are.”
Tumblr media
For all the extremely clear things going on emotionally for people in this scene, I’m surprised Oda just left Nami’s responses at this. But, since he did, it means I get to interpret them how I please!
This could simply be read as her feeling betrayed and shit. But again, they all know the history of the crew. This could just as easily be her saying “You went too far.” or “I can’t believe you wouldn’t believe in Luffy enough to come back with us.”
I said she could probably guess at him feeling like he’s stuck, backed into a corner. And if I remember correctly she is aware that the Strawhat’s lives are threatened if Sanji doesn’t comply with Big Mom’s wishes. But she probably wouldn’t guess at the bracelets being bombs and doesn’t know (but might guess) at the Baratie being threatened too. Nami knows all about people who claim “family” as an excuse to hurt and bind you.
But basically, I would think for her, it would be a situation of her feeling like at this point Sanji should know Luffy well enough to know he won’t give up, and to trust Luffy enough to take Sanji home. So why the fuck would he try to play this game when they’ve all seen that it doesn’t work? Why say the most hurtful things he can think of? And why not just come home now?
I don’t think she’s angry at him for the betrayal he’s trying to act out, I think she’s angry at him for the betrayal he’s committing for not trusting the crew to get him out of there.
(Again, haven’t read past this part but I could absolutely see later Nami saying “do you think we acted hurt enough for them to buy it?”)
And then of course, the last four pages of the chapter where Luffy clearly calls bullshit on Sanji, saying Sanji felt the pain of his kicks more than Luffy did. And Sanji is just starting to fucking lose it. (panels from right to left)
Tumblr media
Like, Luffy. Chill. It hurts so much! But no, he can’t just call Sanji out. He’s gotta go for the kill, present Sanji with an unacceptable situation he knows he can’t refuse. Or at least hopes he can’t refuse. Because for Luffy, Sanji leaving is an unacceptable situation.
Not only will he not eat (which, god, using that against Sanji is almost too much, fuck, Luffy), but he won’t even fucking move so get your ass back here soon before I starve, Sanji.
Tumblr media
To use the two very deeply entrenched facts about these characters this way is sure something, huh?
Sanji will feed anyone who is hungry. He cannot stand hunger, almost.
Luffy eats all the damn time and lots and never refuses food. For him to say “i’m going on a hunger strike, I’m not eating until it’s from you” IS JUST SO MUCH.
Also side note god what cruel people to laugh at Sanji’s pain as Niji and Yonji are doing.
Tumblr media
Sanji thought he could get away with thinking he’s expendable (just like Judge has said in every time period we’ve seen him on the page) Luffy flat out rejects that. Sanji is essential, an required part of the crew and a required part of Luffy’s dream. Just like the crew have adopted his dream as a part of all of their own ultimate goals, so Luffy is saying that they are all part of his ultimate goal. He has adopted them into him becoming the Pirate King.
And goddamn if this arc isn’t about found family. The blood of the covenant is thicker, don’t cha know.

Respond: Is Sanji a pervert?
In reference to/inspired by [x] @cruising-on-pirate-dreams
Tumblr media
It’s always been an interesting topic to see how people interpret Sanji’s character, in general. Usually, if he is not liked in fandom, he is seen as a hardcore pervert who thinks nothing more than that and all the arguments are based on his will to peep women and his nose bleedings. Then, there are other thoughts, that consider that his ero- kappa side is partly an exaggerated gag made by Oda-sensei.
Ever since the beginning, it's been fun to ponder the reasons behind the characters’ behavior and Sanji is not an exception. Actually, he was one of the characters I didn’t completely like in the beginning, because back then, during the elementary school, it was hard to understand why would someone fall in love with (almost) every lady they meet. Then slowly his characteristic started to open more to my blind eyes and the more I saw the soft side of Sanji and how much he puts effort on his friends, the more reasonable it was to see why he is so popular among fans. It seems like the hate he gets is mostly because people pay attention to his lust-side and examine it only from one point of view.
Tumblr media
There was a very interesting analyze written by @cruising-on-pirate-dreams about Sanji’s personality and tendency to be called pervert. In comparison, the fellow fan used Absalom and there were good points to be lifted up:
Absalom without a shame used his devil fruit skills to lurk on both Nami and Robin and never gave a rat’s eye whether Nami or Robin liked his forceful style to approach them. Both of them were clear objects to him that he licked and touched without permission, he even said openly that he likes Nami more because she is weaker in his eyes and later he kidnapped her and made her unconscious so he could marry her by force.
Sanji has a tendency to put himself into the submissive position, especially when it comes down to interacting with women. Yes, of course, he has this “I need lady~!”-kind of side but it’s remarkable how the more familiar/closer the woman is, the more submissive he actually is, in other words, he never puts himself above the ladies, especially when it comes down to interacting with Nami and Robin.
Tumblr media
Before the Whole Cake Island arc was published, I’ve written in Reasons to love Mugiwaras - Sanji - post that I actually do believe that despite the reputation and what he gives out of himself in public (being tough and ladies man), deep inside he is actually very broken and vulnerable and once more of his past was revealed after the time skip, the more sense all the headcanons and speculations started to become logical.
Tumblr media
The flashbacks in the Baratie arc showed that he was on edge of dying after the shipwreck which gave a little pieces of information about him but after the Germa66 and Sanji’s links into it were revealed, it was even more clear that he indeed had a terrible and traumatic childhood and suffered from great amounts neglection and abuse by his biological family until he escaped. The new supplement/update of the background story finally gave a further and more detailed explanation of why Sanji doesn’t see self-worth in himself and always puts others in front of him. He has put himself under the target line for his nakamas many times without caring how his own life and his dreams of finding All Blue would be thrown into waste if the worst-case scenario happened.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, there was someone from the family standing by his side and therefore Sanji grew very close to his mother. Unfortunately, she passed away early due to the illness (that actually protected Sanji to become an emotionless killing machine like his brothers) and then he was again left all alone in his personal hell.  Sora’s death might’ve left a certain gap in his heart. Perhaps the reason he treats women kindly (especially the ones he really adores) has roots in Sora’s way to support Sanji and maybe inside his core, he decided to continue sharing her mother’s legacy of kindness. He might appear like a tough guy who swears like a sailor but only the fact that he has saved an enemy from starvation tells that Sanji truly has a heart of gold, just like Sora.
Tumblr media
It’s highly likely that behind the scenes and below the surface,  Sanji could be actually looking for similar acceptance and unconditional love he got from his mother. But why then do all that ero-kappa stuff and womanizing when being around women? Mainly I still believe that it’s a continuous character gag just like Zoro’s poor sense of direction or Nami’s greediness but somehow it feels that there might be logical reasons behind this behavior.
Of course, it’s easy to interpret and only think that he is just a lustful pervert from the fact that his locker is full of girl magazines and that especially during the crew’s reunion after the time skip when it felt like Sanji couldn’t control himself with his nose bleedings.
Tumblr media
However, if one takes a look to past 20 years One Piece has existed, it’s remarkable to see how much Sanji actually does pay respect to women, especially towards his crewmates. He doesn’t only give compliments on their appearance (i.e how cute they look) or use polite suffixes (”chan” and “san”) while communicating with them, he also praises openly and sincerely their skills and how strong they are. So, it’s obvious that Sanji definitely sees more than just their bodies.
Tumblr media
Then to body swap, what @cruising-on-pirate-dreams wrote as well in another post. It’s easy to be seen that Sanji was happy that Law happened to swap his and Nami’s bodies and yes, he took peeks and adored the body features. However, because of this ero kappa-gag, one perspective is easily being left out of the spotlights (if readers didn’t pay enough attention): He did take good care of Nami’s body and he was aware how his actions can affect on her body and reflected on them many times. He smoked in her body but felt bad for doing that. Now it could be easily argued: “If he cares about Nami, why did he smoke in the first place?” but the answer is simple, he is a chain smoker and besides, Nami herself did give him the permission and the cigarettes in Punk Hazard.
Tumblr media
Well, despite Nami’s warnings, he did take her jacket away when she wasn’t looking but he had a good reason (Kinemon’s torso was underwater and he happened to be the best swimmer out of the options) and besides, he apologized, just like he apologized for harming her lungs with his cigarettes. He also kept constantly worrying whether the diving would be too much for Nami’s body under the circumstances.
So, if Sanji really does only see Nami as a sexual object he wouldn't have feel an urge to apologize for things he did when their bodies were swapped. If she’d only matter to him for lustful reasons and for good looks, he could have taken the advantange on her by taking everything away and do more exploring (if he was alone) but he didn’t because obviously, they were busy solving the mess Caesar made but mostly, (putting aside the comedy-reasons) he knows that going further would have been way too disrespectful and would have violated their nakamaship (and would be against the fact that he has protected her purity back in Thriller Bark and tried to avoid to stain her) especially if he later got caught somehow and it would anyway make no sense if he wanted to hurt her in any way intentionally.
Tumblr media
So, at least for me especially Punk Hazard was an arc that proved that despite the comedy, Robin and Nami are clearly not objects for Sanji and although he surely has felt some lust towards them, he respects the boundaries treats them well and speaks with much softer tones to them and even uses certain suffixes while addressing them.
Someone asked the reasons behind the suffixes and whether there are any deeper meanings  Oda’s response was that he was basically inspired by his older staff members who wanted to be treated as they were younger. Zeff taught Sanji chivalry and perhaps this detail of the story was really based on Oda’s real life.
Tumblr media
Back to the previous topic, why is Sanji portrayed as a pervert? Well, mainly for sure to make balance with comics on heavy storylines and because being interest in opposite-sex openly seems to be part of who he is but then thinking below the surface, what if those wild nosebleeds and dreams about peeping women are all actually just a mask of him? Yes, he does have a crush easily on women he meets and flirts with them but what if there is more than that?
Actually, one of the headcanons I’ve had for years is that Sanji has experienced a traumatic loss that has given him the deep fear of losing the others he holds dear (and that’s why he'd be so sacrificial) and Whole Cake Island sort of supported that thought. It can be possible that because he was strongly bullied by his siblings and despised by his own father (being called a weakling and so on), this all has stained his self-confidence below zero for good and it still will take time to see that he is worthy. Hopefully, Luffy’s words back in Baratie and the retrieval team’s efforts and experiencing his lowest point before the tea party opened his eyes for good and gave his character the chance to grow.
Tumblr media
Like many fans agree, the only place where Sanji has complete confidence is anywhere that is related on his profession, cooking because Zeff convinced that the “chibi-Nasu” really does have potential in becoming a chef, otherwise, he can be surprisingly insecure although he doesn’t show it up openly, perhaps he hides it with this kind of actions.  On top of that, Zeff raised Sanji to respect women so if he really was a pervert and didn’t care about what his foster father taught, then perhaps he would act more like Absalom. However, (again setting the comical aspects aside), I think Sanji himself knows where to cross the line when it really comes down to women. Most likely Zeff wouldn’t approve if Sanji really thought that women are just objects of lust and Sanji probably doesn’t want to disappoint (even unconsciously) someone who saved him from certain death and raised him as his own child.
Tumblr media
Only Oda-sensei knows completely his character and knows the answers but Sanji’s behavior makes me wonder that what if actually at some point he has created kind of an “alter ego” to protect himself? What if he built himself a personality full of confidence so no one would see that deep inside, there is a fragile boy and a wounded man? Well, this is all just speculation so it’s hard to say whether there is any truth behind these thoughts or not but shortly said, Sanji is a great character and there are definitely reasonable reasons for his behavior, in general. However, he indeed is stuck in these ero kappa- gag and it’s sometimes a shame indeed that some (potentially shippy) moments are ruined by those weird faces or when he goes too lustful but on the other hand, it might be just Oda’s way to keep the series’ focus on the main points instead of romance
It’s really hard to believe that Sanji would actually be a pervert as in the term is officially described but once again, it’s all about interpretation. However, if one takes a closer look to the comparison between Sanji’s and Absalom’s interest in Nami (and other women) and comparing it to the facts of what perversion is in terms of human behavior,  it can be easy to tell that out of these two, Absalom is the true pervert.

Warnings: None.
Word Count: 1,128
OC’s: Mizu Florence
Tumblr media
Sanji’s eyes shot open in shock and slight fear as Mizu’s delicate hands clasped firmly against his face.
Her lavender glare glossed over like they were nearly about to spill with angry tears.
With a sharp finger pointed toward his face, the woman’s trembling lips parted.
“Don’t...ever...say that...about yourself”, she demanded in a near shaky whisper.
Her deep strine accent slipping through the cracks, still somehow soothing the man’s angst.
“You are not a failure”, she continued. “You are the most remarkable...and beautiful person I have ever known”.
A low exhale escaped Sanji’s lungs at her words.
“You’ve endured so much pain...and cruelty...from those who ought to have loved you”, clearly choking up at the thought, “...and you still accomplished so much...and still have the purest soul I have ever seen...”.
Her dark brows twitch lightly as she struggles to hold back her sorrow.
“And after all that...to hear you call yourself a failure”, her barriers broken as tears finally begin to stream down her pale cheeks, “...breaks my heart more than words could ever express”.
“Mizu-“, Sanji immediately reacted to the woman’s tears as he reaches for her face.
Her grasp on his face loosening to a more gentle sensation against his skin.
“You shouldn’t cry over someone like me...please”, Sanji began to wipe her face, his fingers soft against her plush skin, “I’m not special...”, Mizu’s face began to heat up.
“I don’t deserve your tears”.
With a swift motion of her arms, Mizu forced herself from Sanji’s grasp.
“And just what do you consider special?!”, her voice rose to a near shout.
Her fists clenched, muscles tense.
“Mizu-“, Sanji tried to quiet down the angered woman, attempting to comfort her in an embrace.
“Someone like Judge?!”, she continued on as she continuously pushed his hands away.
“No, that’s not what-“.
“Your asshole brothers?!”, her voice continued to rise. “Emotionless, soulless beasts with nothing to care for?! Nothing to protect?!”
“Mizu, stop-!”
“You think that’s what I want?!”, the woman shouted as she slammed the man’s back against the wall with her bare hand.
A low grunt erupted from Sanji’s throat upon impact.
The silence between them only broken by heavy pants as Sanji’s gaze met her tearful glare.
“Of all people...?”, her tone lowered. Softened even. Her rage nearly completely seeped from her body.
Taking this opportunity without hesitation, Sanji pulled the woman into a warm embrace against his chest.
Her tears coating his tank.
Her delicate fingers lightly gripping against it.
“That’s not what I want...that’s not what you need to be special...Sanji...”.
She whimpered against him.
The man was silent, but held her tighter.
“...I love you...”, she confessed wholeheartedly, her voice brighter than her usual tone.
Sanji’s eyes saucers. “…what?”
“...I have been since we met...over 2 years of having you in my life and...finally getting the chance to be here to tell you...”.
“Really…?”
With her eyes shielded, Sanji turned his view to the mirror on the other wall...catching the view of the sincerity within her face. Her bitter tears flowing like waterfalls of agony as she desperately clung to him for dear life.
Her eyes clasped shut. Her body trembling like she was in pain at the sheer thought of him being anything like the Vinsmoke’s…or anything less than himself.
But why? ...what was he other than a failed experiment? A broken man on a search for an impossible dream?
“...you are everything”.
His eyes widened at her reflection. A light gasp rose his chest.
“I’ve lost everything...”, she continues on, “...my mum...my home...family, my friends...and I always pushed on”.
Her gaze finally rose, yet still not meeting his eyes.
“...because of you”.
Sanji felt himself begin to melt against her body. His hold on her never letting up as she spoke.
“I ran for so long and so far from the government…rouge pirates…my past…”, Sanji could hear his heart crack at the somberness in her voice, “…and every day I was so close to just throwing in the towel and callin’ it quits…but I kept thinking…’if I give up now…I’ll disappoint him’”.
A light flush filled Sanji’s cheeks as he recalled what he expressed to Judge as to why he saved them…because his real father would be disappointed.
“…and I knew the further away I ran…from everyone I loved, the safer you all would be. But I realized it wasn’t about everyone else”, she admitted. “I’ve kept Bloodbane safe for so many years…no matter what happens to me, I knew they’d be safe, but through it all, the only time I did not know what to do…was when they mentioned the damn Straw Hats”.
Her normal tone resurfacing putting him more at ease.
“That’s when I figured out…you are the only thing in this entire world I can’t live without...that I can’t lose...every little part of you is everything that makes me whole”.
“Mizu…”, Sanji exhaled in a near whisper, otherwise speechless at the woman’s confession before she finally meets his gaze.
Their faces mere inches from one another, their eyes gleaming against one another’s.
“…doesn’t that make you special?”
Sanji’s cheeks flushed at her question.
“I wasn’t wrong though”, his smooth rustic voice filling her itching ears.
A delightful warmth filled her adorable plush cheeks and nose, dusted with freckles like powdered sugar, as he gently brushed her oceania teal hair behind her ear.
Sanji’s breath hinged as he took in the view of her beautiful face...her exquisite mermaid features. She was a real jewel of the ocean. It took everything to convince him that he had not already found his All Blue.
“I don’t deserve your tears”, Sanji admitted as he caressed her cheek. “After everything I did…everything you went through…I could’ve stopped it”, his eyes began to gloss over. “I don’t deserve you…or your love”.
“Well, that’s all you’re getting from me, sailor”, Mizu softly yet firmly reassured the troubled chef. “I’d be sure to remember that if I were you”.
Sanji couldn’t do anything, but release a sigh that couldn’t be described as anything less than relief and pure joy, her loving smile lighting a fire in his heart.
“Now, c’mere”, Mizu finally gave into her desires pulling the man’s lips to hers.
Sanji’s heart nearly exploding as he could feel the passion within her warming her body against his.
There was no need for fear or chivalry as the chef deepened their kiss. He knew what she wanted and what he could give her, she would take all of it with nothing less than the purest love he could ever imagine.
It was then Sanji knew…
…he had truly found his All Blue.

Hey, I read your headcanon about all the Strawhats being in Slytherin because they are extremely ambitious and don't care about the rules, and I love it! But what do you think about Hufflepuff? It's the house of the dedicated, hard-working and honest, so I can definitely see Zoro going there (loyal to his promise, extremely hard-working and always tells the truth) or Sanji (so loyal to his principles that it gets him injured, hard-working, kind even if he pretends he doesn't care..)
Okay, so I’m going to take this and run with it, because I have been waiting forever to speak about this - so I apologize for the long answer lol.
Anyway, first things first! To clarify, the All Slytherins head canon was more of an AU, because there’s definitely the possibility that the Straw Hats could fit into other houses.
Personally - I love Zoro in Hufflepuff!!! This man is the definition of loyalty, just watch the end of Thriller Bark. I can never view him in a house such as Gryffindor or whatever.  Sanji would be great in Hufflepuff as well!!! When his character is not being destroyed, his main spectacular trait is his kindness, which definitely fits into being a Hufflepuff.
(Honestly, most of the Straw Hats could get into Hufflepuff by loyalty alone. However, few of them have that kindness to them, and have more traits.)
But let’s talk about this in terms of this au (Oh boy, this is going to be long lol) and the actual Sorting hat, and the age at which they are sorted.
In Harry Potter Canon, the Sorting Hat actually isn’t that great. It sorts you into a house based on your characteristics as an 11-year-child and puts you into place with more of the people with the same characteristics as you.
You are a child. You are going to grow. But… doing that kind of stunts that growth. Give you a category of who you are suppose to be.
Ugh. I have problems with it. MOVING ON! So the sorting hat summarizes your entire character into basic traits.
The following is taken from the Wiki
Gryffindor - Bravery, Nerve, Athletic,Courage,Chivalry, Daring.
Slytherin - Resourcefulness,Cunning, Ambition,Determination,Leadership, Self-Preservation, Fraternity, Cleverness
Ravenclaw - Intelligence Wit Wisdom Creativity Originality Individuality Sharpness Acceptance
Hufflepuff - Dedication, Hardworking, Fairness Patience Kindness Tolerance Modesty Loyalty
(End stuff taken from Wiki)
These are the defining traits. Half of them are synonyms. So, basically, G = Brave and Bold, S = Ambitious and Cunning, R= Smart and Independence H = Good Person, Loyal, and Hardworking.
So, seeing how that is how the Sorting Hat works…. lets look at the Straw Hats as 11 year old children. And also how the theme of OP (dreams) translates very well into the word ‘ambitition’
Luffy, 11 years old - basically a tiny delinquent, beating up people in the streets, not paying for food, and shouting his dream every three seconds for the world to hear. This boy is made up of nothing but ambition to be a pirate (every fight. he has is training to be one) and he isn’t just going to be a pirate - he’s going to be the Pirate King! Essentially, while he does develop his character more later, all he has going for him is Ambition right now. So? I’d say Slytherin.
Zoro, 11 years old - …. he swore an oath to a girl who died that he would become the greatest swordsman in the world and he has not stopped working towards that goal since. He doesn’t have anyone to be loyal to right now, as a child all he has is his dream, his ambition. Slytherin.
Nami, 11 years old - working for Arlong, probably crying every time she makes a map because its not the map she wants to be making, using every trick in the book to get money, and already knows her dream to draw a map of the world. I’d say the textbook definition of a Slytherin honestly.
Usopp, 11 years old - Trickery and deception by every resource is his game, and we know he wants to find his dad already, though he doesn’t want to be a brave warrior of the sea yet. Slytherin, half-textbook definition again.
Sanji 11 years old- This kid was saved from starvation because he had the same, impossible dream as an old man. but he’s also tricky because even young, Sanji was unbearably kind. But to this I’d say,  Germa 66 was probably Gryffindor because of the whole ‘hero’ thing, and Sanji might want to go the opposite. For this au at least, Slytherin!
Robin, 11 years old, - on the run from the government because she became an archeologist at 8 years old so she could study the poneglyphs. This girl has ambition, and we see in flashbacks that she’s still trying to find them while on the run. Slytherin!
Franky, 11 years old - I think it was actually at 11 years old that Franky said that he was going to work to create his ship of dreams, so ambition for sure. I would say Slytherin.
Brook, 11 years old - hey, WTF was Brook doing when he was 11. Oda tell us. Ugh. So honestly no concrete reason here but let’s just put him in Slytherin just because lol.
So there’s the reasoning - at a young age, each and every Straw Hat (barring Brook) has a dream, an ambition so big that any normal person wouldn’t even be able to think about it. Slytherins are ambitious - but not only that - they aim for the top and I’m pretty sure all the ones that got into Slytherin outside of their blood line were able to reach their goal.
The Straw Hats aim for the top - and that was their defining trait, even as children, which is what the Sorting hat would have picked up on. Maybe down the road it would have changed - with the characterization now, definitely some of them would be in Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, or Gryffindor.
tl;dr While the Strawhats do have characteristics of other houses, especially Hufflepuff, these traits didn’t reveal themselves in full until they were Adults, and if they were children the sorting hat would have sorted them into Slytherin based on their one, defining characteristic - their ambition, or in the one piece world ‘dream’
Wow, okay I apologize this is a very long post lol, and I definitely went over what I was intending to answer. But yeah! Thanks for the ask! Im sorry if this long answer annoyed you, but I just had so much to say!!!

Word count: ~4000 AO3 Summary:  He was the youngest, most naive Straw Hat, but Chopper was also a doctor, and doctors keep their patient's secrets.
"Any dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision?" Chopper asked as he listened to Nami's heart.
"No, no, and no."
The newest Straw Hat was learning quickly that hearty constitutions were the norm for this strange little crew. For someone who had been deathly ill less than a week prior, Nami seemed to be in remarkably good spirits. But the fact remained that she had nearly been killed by a prehistoric disease, and that regular checkups were a must until Chopper was certain she would not relapse.
Lub dub, lub dub, lub dub. The steady, even rhythm was soothing. It really did seem like she was fully recovered. It was the closest thing to a miracle Chopper had seen in his short medical career.
"Hey, there's something I wanted to ask you earlier, but I forgot," Chopper said.
"Sure," Nami said with a soft smile that made him want to squirm in delight.
"Who's Arlong?"
Lub dub, lubdub, lubdublubdub…The room went deathly silent as Nami's heart began to race, and Chopper realized he had asked something very bad without even meaning to.
"Where did you hear that name?"
The sharp, almost panicked tone in her voice made him cringe. Hiding his face with his hat, Chopper tried not to see that his indomitable navigator (his new friend) was scared.
"Y-you did. When you were sick." Nami paled, and the scared look was replaced with one of horror. "Y-you were delirious. You said something about maps, and that…and that you'd have them finished on time."
Nami's arms went limp by her side, and she stared blankly ahead without seeing.
"You asked him not to hurt you."
The statement snapped her back into reality. Nami grabbed the front of Chopper's lab coat, her gaze burning with anger. "Don't you dare tell anyone. I'll deny it till I'm blue in the face. I'll call you a liar and make you wish you were never born."
"I-I wasn't going to!" Chopper stammered.
"You said it yourself, I was delirious. No one would believe you anyway."
"Nami, I'm your doctor! I would never tell anyone what happened when you were sick!"
"I—you wouldn't?" Nami seemed to remember herself, letting go of his clothes as if they were on fire.
"No, I wouldn't!" Chopper exclaimed as he took a step backward.
"Oh." Nami looked away, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Then her hand moved to her shoulder, tracing her tattoo with one finger. "I'm sorry. It's just that Arlong…Arlong wasn't a very nice man."
Chopper nodded his understanding. "Neither was Wapol, but he's gone now. Arlong's not here either, so you're safe." His spirits lifted when he saw a small smile on the navigator's face. "But if you want to talk about it, I'm here."
Nami reached out and touched his cheek tenderly. "Thank you, Doctor. I appreciate it."
With a metal nose, blue hair, and forearms bigger than a normal man's thigh, Franky could never be described as normal. Add in cola-fueled energy systems, air cannons that shot out of his hands, and the ability to turn into a reverse centaur, Franky was downright freakish.
Chopper didn't mind. There were monsters aplenty aboard the Thousand Sunny. Franky and his cyborg body fit right in with the rest.
Besides, the shipwright was proud of his handiwork. Hardly a day went by where he didn't demonstrate some insane feature he had installed into himself all those years ago. He and Usopp would often joke with one another about what upgrades he would attempt next, each more ridiculous than the last.
Seriously, who else besides Franky would think that nipple lights were a good idea?
There was, however, one sore spot, one not-so-insignificant part of himself that Franky deemed less than super.
"Promise not to laugh?" he asked nervously the first time Chopper examined him.
"I never laugh at my patients," Chopper answered solemnly.
"I can't…I can't have kids."
Chopper blinked, unsure of what he was supposed to say. Franky rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably. "When the sea train hit me, it did a lot of damage, er, down there." His cheeks flushed bright red with embarrassment. "I made sure it looks normal, and there's still feeling, but I can't…"
"Have kids," Chopper answered for him.
"Yeah."
"Is that something you want?"
"No! Not now, but in the future, yeah…maybe, I dunno. It's not…manly."
Chopper nodded his understanding, although he was still amazed he was having this conversation with Franky, who seemed more interested in mechanics and robotics than romance and children.
He put a hoof on Franky's knee and gave him an encouraging smile. "If something, or someone, makes you change your mind in the future, talk to me. There are some treatment options we can try."
"Really? That's…that's super. Thanks, bro. And…if you don't mind keeping this to yourself…"
"Of course."
"What happened?!" Chopper shrieked, resisting the urge to punch Zoro right in his big, fat chin. The bleeding had stopped, but the wounds would reopen with the slightest provocation. He had seen Zoro beaten and bloody before, but the mysterious altercation at Thriller Bark had left him shredded. In places it had been difficult to find enough healthy tissue to stitch back together.
"Nothing," the swordsman replied with the same unnatural calmness he had exhibited since regaining consciousness. Normally when injured he was rushing to resume his training, wanting to excise the weakness that had led to him being hurt. This time was different. Zoro had accepted the outcome of this particular altercation with surprising grace.
It was infuriating, and Chopper was at his wits end. It was moments like this that led him to believe that Doctorine was right to throw scalpels at her patients.
"I. Am. Your doctor!" Chopper exclaimed. "I need to know what happened!"
"No you don't."
Without thinking, Chopper transformed into his full human form, looming over the swordsman as he poked a finger at the one unbandaged part of his torso. "And if you bleed to death because I didn't know the proper means of treatment?"
"Then that's as far down the path I could make it," Zoro said with a lopsided shrug.
"No, you selfish asshole!" Chopper yelled. He had never talked to one of his crewmates like this before, and he hated it. He hated it, because it wasn't even necessary. Sometimes Zoro's pride was as bad as Sanji's chivalry, but at least Sanji had the decency to admit his deference to the fairer sex would someday be the death of him.
"If I can't heal you that means…that means I failed. That I'm n-not good enough for my dream…" Chopper's vision blurred, and he couldn't keep the tears from falling. "I d-don't want you t-to die. I c-can't help you if I don't kn-know what's wr-wrong."
With one piteous sniff, Chopper reverted to his normal hybrid form and sat in the middle of the floor of his infirmary. He cried, not because he was frustrated (that happened all the time with Zoro as a patient) but because he was exhausted. The Straw Hat Pirates had been in so many life and death situations in such a short amount of time, Chopper wasn't sure how much more he could take.
He heard Zoro sigh, and the swordsman joined him on the ground. Leaning back with a small wince, Zoro looked at the ceiling in thought.
"I'm through the worst of it now," he said. "I'm not gonna die."
"B-but it doesn't make sense. Your injuries, I've never seen a-anything like it before. I'm s-scared, b-because….because I don't know what could do that to you, or if it'll happen again." Chopper wiped his eyes with his hooves. "It's as if…as if something was pushing from the inside out. All your muscles and major blood vessels had damage in their innermost layers. Like…like…"
"Like they'd been stretched," Zoro supplied.
"Yes, like if Luffy stretched his whole body too far all at once." Chopper shook his head when he thought of their captain. For once, Luffy had managed to come out of an adventure unharmed. If anything, it was the opposite.
"Exactly like Luffy," Zoro repeated, before falling silent and letting him put the pieces together.
"…You didn't," Chopper whispered when it dawned on him. "How…?"
"That doesn't matter," Zoro said, this time his tone indicating the subject was closed for good. "I'm not going to die. You did your job, Chopper, just like I had to do mine."
"O-okay."
"Luffy can never know," Zoro said. "I only told you so you'd stop worrying."
It seemed impossible, but in that moment Chopper's respect for Zoro grew even more. And to be trusted with a secret this huge meant that Zoro respected him back. Chopper nodded, brushing away the last of his tears.
"Okay."
"Hey, Chopper, is it normal when people talk to themselves?"
Chopper roused himself, blinking sleepily at Usopp. It was a quiet, warm afternoon, and the crew was all worn out from a recent skirmish with the marines. "That depends, I guess."
"Oh." Usopp leaned back on his haunches.
"Why do you ask?"
"No reason," Usopp said quickly. "It's just…I know this guy…"
"Sogeking?" Chopper asked excitedly. Since Enies Lobby, Usopp had kept in touch with his superhero friend, and was more than happy to regale to anyone who would listen with stories of his heroic exploits.
Usopp thought about it for a moment. "Actually, it is. It's not him, per say, but his, er, sidekick. Yeah. Sogeking's sidekick, Sniper Lad, has been, well, talking to himself. He—that is Sogeking—is concerned. Because that's not normal, right?"
"What's he saying?" Chopper asked.
"Nothing bad. Pep talks, mostly."
"Hmm. It's hard to say. I don't want to make a premature judgment when I've never seen the patient."
"I understand."
"But…" Chopper tapped his chin. "Mental health is a spectrum. Health in general is a spectrum. A lot of people like to have black and white definitions of 'sane' and 'insane', but it doesn't work like that, just like there isn't a clear-cut way to say someone is 'healthy' or 'unhealthy'.
"As the sidekick to a successful hero, Sniper Lad has a very stressful and demanding job. If he's not contemplating doing harm to himself or others and uses it simply as a means to cope...Did Sogeking say if these 'pep talks' helped or not?"
"They've gotten the job done," Usopp said.
"Okay. Without knowing more information, I'd say there's nothing to worry about. People deal with stress in different ways, and if that's what works for Sniper Lad…" Chopper looked back up towards the sky. "Who is anyone else to judge?"
"That's good. I, er, Sogeking was getting really worried there for a second."
Chopper closed his eyes, ready to resume his nap. "I'd like to meet Sniper Lad someday. It's a shame Sogeking had to leave so quickly after Enies Lobby. He would have been a real help against Oars. But I guess he's busy with hero stuff."
"Yeah," Usopp said quietly. "I guess he is."
It wasn't often post-battle checkups made Chopper feel sad. Angry, incredulous, or frustrated, yes, maybe even awed if a wound was spectacular enough. But never sad.
His assessment of Robin after her rescue made Chopper sad.
A single, massive contusion covered her abdomen, the bruises a harsh bluish-purple. An abrasion started at the crest of her hip, disappearing beneath her pants. Worst was the bruising on her shoulders. Chopper could still see the individual finger prints from where she had been grabbed.
"Elephant sword, mostly," Robin said, answering the question he was too scared to ask.
Chopper made a distressed noise and tenderly touched a mark by her kidney. It was uncomfortably similar to the shape of a boot, and he was grateful he had already run the tests that ruled out internal bleeding. "Robin, how long have you had suicidal thoughts?"
"Excuse me?" Robin asked, shying away from his touch for the first time.
"You said you wanted to die," Chopper said, eyes misting at the terrible memory. "H-how long have you thought that?" And how long have I missed clinical depression in one of my patients?
Instead of avoiding the question as he half-feared she might, Robin tilted her head in thought. "I don't know exactly how long it's been, Doctor. Archeologists think about death a great deal simply by the nature of their work, and when I started doing more…unsavory deeds to ensure survival, my awareness of my mortality only increased. But actually wanting to die?" A tiny frown appeared on her face, and her eyes grew distant. "Fifteen years, maybe? It's not constant, but during low moments I've at least entertained the notion."
Chopper's stomach twisted into knots. Fifteen years was as long as he'd been alive, humanly-speaking. "Have you ever tried to…to…"
"Not directly, no. I owe too much to too many people to take my life with my own hand, no matter how badly I may have wanted to in the past." Robin looked down at Chopper intently. "Doctor, I'm asking for your discretion in this matter. The others can't know, not after all that's happened."
"A doctor never tells his patient's secrets."
They were silent as Chopper continued his assessment. Robin probably had a few cracked ribs, but there was little he could do for those other than pain control. As he examined her skull, he found several tender areas and a scab where a chunk of hair had been ripped from her scalp. One of her teeth had a large chip in it.
Sensing his mounting distress, Robin touched Chopper's shoulder reassuringly. Her eyes were tired, but her smile was warm. "I left because I didn't have those thoughts here. From the time I joined Straw Hats until Aokiji's attack…I was happy. After digging out of the pit and tasting the sunlight, I didn't want to go back to the darkness. I thought the betrayal was inevitable, and I had no choice but to go back. I was wrong, and I will fight with every fiber of my being to stay with this crew for as long as I can."
Her battered body was evidence enough of that. "Good. But, Robin, if anything happens and there's another low moment…I'm here for you."
Robin's smile widened, and she squeezed his shoulder. "I know."
One of the most exciting things about reuniting after two years was discovering what new things the Straw Hats had learned during their separation. Usopp had his new arsenal of plants, Sanji could set things on fire under water, and Brook…
Brook's new abilities were totally awesome.
"I can't believe it!" Chopper exclaimed. "You got your head cut off and lived!"
Brook took a sip of tea, obviously pleased with himself. "Well, yes. I suppose I did, didn't I?"
"That's amazing!"
"I would have thought you would be more impressed with Mr. Franky's new machines," Brook chuckled. "All I did was improve my control over my Devil Fruit."
"That's cool, but do you know what that means for me as a doctor?" Chopper nearly burst with excitement at the thought. "I have a patient who can get his head cut off and not die. That makes my job so much easier."
"Well, technically, I've already died…"
"Think of the possibilities!"
Brook set his tea down. "I have, actually, and I'd rather not do it again," he said quietly.
"Huh? Why not?" Chopper asked.
"My body was already somewhat durable. A skeleton does not truly need to eat or drink, nor does it have fleshly parts that can fall prey to disease or decay. I've lived this second life for over fifty years, and I am no different than the day my soul returned to my body."
The crux of Brook's problem dawned on Chopper, and some of his elation deflated.
"My body is held together with the energy of the Underworld. You will all age and will eventually pass on, and even when I'm reunited with Laboon, he will not live forever. I've lost those closest to me once before, and I don't want to experience that ever again."
"Oh."
"But," Brook said sadly, "I'm not certain I can die. Perhaps if what is left of me was destroyed completely, maybe, but I've learned how to project my soul outside my body. And obviously it's not something I want to go around testing, on the off-chance I'm wrong. Not yet, at least."
Chopper was quiet for a moment. "You know, Doctorine told me stories of dying people remaining in an unconscious state for over a week until family could arrive to say goodbye, and others who hold on long enough to see their children married or to hold the grandchildren for the first time and only to pass a few hours later. She always thought that people had some control over when they died. You've got a lot to live for, but when your time comes I think you'll be able to let go."
"Yohohoho, I had never thought of it that way. Thank you, Chopper. Of course, there's quite a lot I wish to accomplish before that happens." A grin spread across his skull, and Brook patted the top of Chopper's hat. "Let's not talk of such unpleasant matters any longer. It's been too long since I've seen you…though I don't have eyes…and I want to know how you've managed to develop such wonderful new transformations."
Sanji claimed he never got sick, and technically that was true.
He did, however, get short of breath.
Chopper shook his head as he pulled his stethoscope away from Sanji's chest. The symptoms were subtle, but to Chopper's sensitive ears they were as plain as day. "I know you don't want to hear it, but I think all those cigarettes are catching up with you."
"You 'think'?" Sanji said.
"It's polite doctor-speak for 'smoking two packs of cigarettes a day is going to kill you'. But I'm sure you knew that already."
"Hey, no need to be hostile," Sanji said crossly. His fingers twitched, and Chopper knew he was fighting the urge to pull out a cigarette at that moment. Chopper was very flexible when it came to doctoring, but he absolutely refused to let Sanji smoke in his infirmary.
"We've been through this before. I guess I'm just frustrated," Chopper said. "You know the risks."
"I do, and that doesn't change the fact I'm going to light up just as soon as I go through that door."
"Can't you at least cut back a little?" Chopper pleaded. "No girl's going to want to kiss you if your breath smells like tobacco."
Sanji threw his head back and laughed. "Oh, you poor, ignorant bastard. Why do you think I started in the first place? It gives me an aura of mystery that matches perfectly with my handsome charm. Look up debonair in the dictionary, and there's probably a picture of me with a cigarette."
"That same picture would also be listed under lung cancer," Chopper said.
"Well, if I live long enough to get to that point, I give you permission to laugh at my sorry ass."
"No. I'll be too busy trying to keep you alive, despite your terminal case of hopeless idiocy," Chopper said, managing a smile.
Sanji snorted. "That's something, I guess. How bad is it, Chopper?"
"You're in the early stages of lung disease. I'll make up some treatments, but as far as I can tell none of your abilities have been compromised yet."
"That's good," Sanji said, and the relief in his visible eye was nearly palpable. "No reason to give Moss Head another reason to exercise his superiority complex."
"And there's no reason to worry the rest of the crew," Chopper agreed. "All the symptoms are reversible. For now."
"Okay." Sanji stood to leave. "I'm sure there will be plenty of I-told-you-sos later, but I really need a smoke."
"Good doctors don't say I told you so," Chopper said quietly. "They stick with their patients, through thick and thin."
Sanji stared at him in surprise, unlit cigarette dangling from his lips. "Then I'm glad you're my doctor, 'cause you're the best there is."
Burns were tricky. Really, having a large amount of scar tissue regardless of cause was tricky. The new skin wasn't as flexible or strong, and if the wound went deep enough the underlying areas were affected as well. No matter how cool looking, Chopper was glad when his patents didn't scar. It was healthier that way.
It was, of course, impossible to avoid all of the time. The Straw Hats were pirates, with all of the danger that entailed. But Chopper considered it a matter of pride that he was able to treat his friend's wounds without leaving behind long-term complications.
Which, in a way, explained why he felt so guilty when he saw Luffy's chest. The X-shaped scar showed how he had been unable to be there in his captain's time of need, not just during the battle, but during the time of recovery as well. Whoever had done the initial treatment had done a serviceable job, though Chopper believed he could have done better, had he been there to try.
"Does it hurt?" Chopper asked softly, palpating the edges of the wound.
"Every day," Luffy said in his normal, simple way, as if it were no problem at all.
"I could help with that," Chopper said. "It's the least I could do after I wasn't there to help…"
"That wasn't your fault, Chopper. I don't want you to say it was ever again, captain's orders," Luffy said, with a seriousness that was usually absent from his voice. "I was the one who wasn't strong enough. Me, and no one else."
"But…" Chopper faltered when Luffy glared at him. "It's not your fault, either."
Luffy leaned back, a sullen expression on his face. "Maybe not, but I'm still gonna make sure it never happens again. I'm strong enough now, I swear."
"I know."
Slowly, Luffy's normal grin returned. "I'm not good at very many things. I can't be the Pirate King without you."
"That doesn't make me happy at all, asshole," Chopper said, delighted.
"Shishishi," Luffy laughed quietly. Then he looked down at his scar, and the serious expression came back. He blinked a few times, very rapidly as if he were trying not to cry, and when he looked at Chopper again his eyes were shiny with unshed tears.
There was a second reason Chopper did not like scars, one that was more psychological than medical. He did not like his patients to be reminded of their trauma every time they looked in a mirror. When Chopper was able to heal someone without leaving a visible mark, he liked to think he had helped heal them on the emotional level as well. He would never pretend that the pain had never happened, but he did think that it made it easier to move on.
Luffy didn't have that opportunity. Every day he would be faced with the evidence of his brother's death.
"And we've gotten stronger, too," Chopper said. "We'll be right behind you, no matter where you go."
A look of pure relief coursed through Luffy's body. He wiped his eyes and gave Chopper a wobbly smile. Maybe two years wasn't enough to completely heal him from the events that took place during the Marineford War, but that was okay. Luffy was well on his way, and Chopper would see to it that his broken heart was made whole again.

My top 25 favorite SaNami moments – Part 2
This post only includes manga moments, and though it was supposed to only be a top 10 I ended up having many more moments. This is the second part which is the actual top 10, so if you haven’t read the first one you can go HERE to read about number 11-25.
Also I’m not saying all of these are romantic, or proof for SaNa, but simply even as nakama these are some of the moments I’ve really liked between them. Some might be big, some might be small, it’s simply my own preference after all.
I’ve put my favorite ones in this post, but I am not completely sure of the order, and I might have forgotten some. It’s up until chapter 892, so spoilers for Whole Cake Island.
Long post following under the cut.
10. Nami’s concern and I’m coming with you
Nami’s constant worrying in Zou and Whole Cake Island as she pushes the others to go after Sanji. It’s not really one particular moment, so I’m just mentioning it in general. Particularly I also really like that she went with Luffy to learn about Sanji’s family and that she cries thinking of Sanji’s situation. When Nami demands to go with Luffy to WCI and says she feels responsible for Sanji leaving her worry is obvious, and Oda’s insistent use of Nami in this type of moments always make me love her more.

9. Sanji’s sacrifice at Drum Island
This is where Sanji’s love for Nami steps up its game from casual flirting and differentiates her from other women. He’s ready to die for her and puts her above everything else. He reminds Luffy of how he has to be careful and protects her with all means he has. It’s also quite cute how Nami worries about him later and even lets him rest his head on her lap.
Tumblr media
8. Sanji talking about Nami’s past with Jinbei
A moment that marks how involved and strongly Sanji feels about Nami. It shows how he remembers details about her past and how he is affected by the pain Nami has been through. Nami also steps in and shares her own thoughts, making them both closer due to their shared experience. It’s a moment that logically perhaps should revolve only around Nami, but Oda still decided to include Sanji.

7. When Nami gets a fever
I know the sacrifice in Drum Island is a pretty big deal, but if I have to choose I personally love the scenes when they’re all still on Merry and Nami gets sick just a little bit more. We get focus on Sanji worrying about Nami and Oda lets us see his reaction before anyone else’s. I also really like his reactions when Nami comes out to talk about the fastest way of getting to Alabasta. It’s a small moment, but I think it truly show’s how well Sanji knows Nami by this point. It also gave us a SaNa piggyback, which was really sweet.

6. Nami fighting with Zoro
Nami is almost desperate to have the crew go after Sanji and her fight with Zoro where she actively defends him is just a really great moment. It shows how much Nami worries and cares about Sanji and is in the end the trigger for the crew going to get him back. It’s not a gag moment like many of Nami’s “fights” with the crew, but rather a serious feeling coming from her because of the things Zoro says about Sanji.

5. Sanji’s sacrifice in Skypiea
I think what I like the most about this moment is the fact that Nami was actually there to see it. We got a reaction from her that finally proved how much she also cared about Sanji. People have always tried to downplay the relationship between Sanji and Nami by saying that Nami is annoyed by him, and that she doesn’t like him but rather simply tolerates him. This moment definitely proves otherwise.

4. The hug in Whole Cake Island
When I started this list this moment didn’t exist yet, but how could I not include it? It’s the first hug they share since in Baratie, and it’s initiated by Nami. It shows how happy she is to have him back and her gratefulness to be saved. It’s a grouphug with all the Guru-wara so it’s a really nice moment between nakama. But I like that Oda focused on Nami and also added Sanji’s comment about “I love you too Nami-san!” This feels to me like Oda is adding more to SaNami that might point to them actually becoming canon some day.

3. Bridal carry at Thriller Bark
This is the most romantically thematic moment between any of the strawhats in my opinion, and I remember the almost shock when I read it for the first time. What truly makes this one of my favorite moments is also the buildup to it. How Sanji consistently strived to find Nami and worried about her throughout the whole arc. The scene in itself also once again proves what Sanji is ready to sacrifice for Nami as he takes a knife in the back for her. It has Albsalom taunting Sanji with Nami and the whole arc had interesting romantic undertones.

2. The slap
Another scene that is a lot about the buildup to it. Nami has by that point been worried sick about Sanji since he left them on Zou, and she is so happy when she finally gets to see him again. Only to have the rug get pulled out from under her feet, as Sanji acts cold towards her for the first time ever. It marks a shift in the way she views Sanji as it’s the first time he isn’t kind and loving towards her. Not to mention his behavior towards their captain. It’s a shock and hurt that Nami wasn’t at all prepared for and it added a tension in their relationship that is interesting.
Tumblr media
1. Nami compliments Sanji’s chivalry
She finds it stupid that he won’t fight women, but in the end still gives him credit for it, even though she acts very tsundere about it later. It’s just something really quiet and nice about the understanding Nami shows for Sanji in this scene. And when she also steps in to take over his fight for him that’s another bonus. “I won’t let you get away with this” has a rather nice ring to it. I still think this is a really important scene that in a simple way shows that the bond Nami and Sanji shares is more than just two people on the same ship. It also shows that Nami has no problem with Sanji being soft towards women, but is still frustrated that he would get hurt or even die because of it.
Tumblr media
And those were my favorite SaNami moments from the manga so far. It wasn’t easy trying to pick and rank these moments, and since it’s been a while since I read the whole manga I know I have missed quite a few that maybe deserves their own place on this list. What did you think, do you agree?
I hope you had fun reading and that we will get plenty of more good Sanji x Nami moments as the story continues. <3
