jackie•octoling•she/they•: born and raised in the tentatek region of splatsville with an intense appreciation for inkopolis and takarokan fashion. jackie’s got an insanely low social battery and they’re notably very shy, making faster friends with shopkeeps than they do with other inkfish. she rarely if ever competes in any turf games if she can help it, mostly wielding easier weapons like the vanilla splattershot jr.

nana•inkling•custom splattershot jr.•they/them: born in inkopolis and moved to splatsville at a young age, nana is a young up-and-coming musician with a passion for all things fusion. they’re notoriously very loud and impulsive, and will stay up until 3 am slamming on their drumset or plunking out tunes— much to the discomfort of their roommate. they’re a massive toni kensa fan and can’t bear being seen in anything but kensa gear, which has already run their thin musician pockets into the ground. they’ve tried for a kensa sponsorship so frequently despite their abysmal lack of competitive skill that they’ve already been blacklisted from several store locations, but they’re nothing if not stubborn. they spend many hours in the work week salmon running, hoping to earn enough to line their closet with even more kensa gear.

raccoon•inkling•variety chargers•they/them: raccoon is a splatsville native but has never followed too intensely into the rambunctious and colorful nature of their hometown, having lived the majority of their life selectively mute. out of all of the other cephalopods in my roster they’re by far the most competitively adept LMAO they’re a variety charger onetrick who sometimes flexes into blasters, and they’re a complete and utter deadshot. they land their shots so frequently that they tend to wear headgear that obscures their vision just to handicap themselves, which in turn helps them train. for their terrifying charger prowess they’ve got an equally terrifying visage— bright, unblinking yellow eyes with contracted pupils and a perpetual grin— but they’re actually a massive sweetheart with a cheeky sense of humor.

snow•octoling•vanilla splash-o-matic•she/her: snow is one of many octarian army defects spurred by the calamari inkantation. she was a relatively high ranking tactician/battle strategist, and she carries that same skillset into her competitive play. she’s very proper and curt, oftentimes rude in how she addresses her fellow teammates to the point that they joke that she never “mentally” defected. there is, however, a way into her heart: cute stuffed animals and squid sisters merchandise.

tilly•octoling•sloshing machine•she/her: tilly was born in the takarokan splatlands to all but neglectful parents. being left to fend for herself at a young age led her straight to a grizzco branch located out in the badlands, and she’s been doing nothing but salmon run since. she takes her job very seriously and is quick to scrutinize any less capable teammates (though not out loud). she spends most of her days stalking around grumbling to herself, shooting withering glares at any passerby unfortunate enough to have locked eyes with her.

Chapter 3

First period had started ten minutes before as I rushed into the building. The halls were void of students and staff, and the only sound was the squeaking of my coffee-sodden shoes on the white tiles. 

Every head in the classroom shot up from their phone as I burst through the door, setting my bag down and taking out the soaked papers to dry. “I am so sorry, guys!”

“Miss Foster,” one kid said. “Is that coffee on you?”

I paused and stared at them like a deer in headlights. “Um–uhh…yeah.” I began to set up my desk–booting up my computer, filing away papers, trying my best to not cry at the feeling of wet socks–while simultaneously trying my best to form a coherent response. “Little accident at the Weathervane. I ended up spilling all of my latte on me…and another customer.”

I took a deep breath and fixed my shirt, sighing as I tried to gather my thoughts, but something–her–she lingered in the back of my head. Larissa. Not even ten minutes together and her eyes, her smile, her very person was already imprinted in my mind. “Okay–uh…what class is this again? First period? Right, okay. Where’d we leave off yesterday?”

“The intro to the Russian Revolution of 1917,” a girl in the back answered.

“Right!” I moved to the white board and took a marker, drawing a long line with dashes here and there. When the timeline was built, I began to lecture the students, smiling to myself when turned away from them, knowing that they had no clue I had first hand experience with the subject at hand.

“Okay, the Russian Revolution…” I started. “As we learned yesterday, the revolution was initiated in February of 1917. The first revolt was centered around the capital at the time, Petrograd. This would later become Saint Petersburg. Tsar Nicholas II eventually stepped down from the throne after being convinced by the high ranking military officials that in doing so, the mutinies and turmoil would subside. This would allow the new government, led by the Russian Duma, to take over, and this becomes the Russian Provisional Government.” 

I looked across the sea of students all looking at the board, some taking notes, and one trying to not fall asleep. “Can anyone tell me what was a major contributing factor to the 1917 revolution?”

A girl in the back shot her hand up quickly. “Oh! The Russian Revolution of 1905.”

“Good!” To know that at least one of my students was paying attention and that I wasn’t talking to the wall always filled me with hope–especially in a town like this. “As we learned last week, the events of Bloody Sunday caused a lot of upheaval. If you turn to page 276 of your textbook you can see a primary source image of propaganda from 1905, and if you turn to page 301 you can also see a comparison of the multiple revolutions Russia had pre-World War One and throughout…”

The soft glow of lamplight encases the living room as the TV plays quietly in the background. I scan over tests, marking each incorrect answer and unfortunately recording more D’s than A’s. 

I glance at my phone. It had been an entire day since I spilled coffee on Larissa. I had no idea who she was or what she did for a living, but scenarios crossed my mind as to why she hadn’t reached out yet.

What if she was just being polite?

What if she wants nothing to do with me?

I barely know this woman and I’m already craving her approval and attention.

What the hell is wrong with me?

I don’t even know her last name and I’m already clinging to her.

It had been three days since the incident and now I was convinced Larissa wanted nothing to do with me. I stood in line at the Weathervane, staring off into space. As I stepped up to the counter, I smiled and placed my order before moving off to the side to wait. But once again I was a complete idiot.

“Wow, I really need to start looking where I’m going,” I huffed after running straight into her.

The softest smile from her sent butterflies through my chest. It was incredible, the effect this woman had on me. “Well, at least there was no coffee this time.” 

Larissa’s giggle was the sweetest sound to grace my ears. 

“Oh, by the way,” she continued. “I just wanted to apologize for not messaging you sooner. I’ve been quite busy recently.”

I smiled back, relieved it was all in my head. “That’s fine! I completely understand. I’m a history teacher at Jericho High School, so I’m well acquainted with ‘busy’.”

Larissa paused for a moment. “Would you want to sit down with me? I have some free time so I didn’t order my coffee as takeaway.”

“I would love that,” I said after taking a second to think. “But, unfortunately, I have to be at work in fifteen minutes.”

I could’ve sworn there was a look of disappointment in Larissa’s eyes. The blue hue grew ever so slightly darker and her smile faltered briefly before widening. “That’s quite alright. Your students come first.”

“Well,” I chuckled. “More like my need to pay the bills comes first. The students can be a pain in the rear, but you do have a point. The students are our future. And to have a better future they need a good education.”

The entire day I couldn’t stop thinking about her. It got so bad to the point where I actually had to give one of the classes a free period. “I need to catch up on grading,” I told them. 

What a lie.

I spent the entire time thinking about Larissa. How her hips swayed when she walked. How her perfect red lips would curve into the sweetest smile. And how her eyes could tell you every emotion she ever had. 

“Miss Foster?” 

“Miss Foster?”

A voice brought me from my trance and I looked up at the girl. How long had she been standing there? “Oh god. I’m sorry, Macy. What can I help you with?”

“Well, I just had a question about this section of the assignment you gave us yesterday…”

As she explained her problem it was hard to focus. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my phone screen light up with a text. My heart practically burst at the unknown number and suddenly, for the time ever, I didn’t want to help a student. 

But, I did. I answered her questions, and I helped her answer an essay prompt about the early civilization lesson we were going over. As soon as she sat back down I picked up my phone, and sure enough it was Larissa.

‘I was just wondering if you’d be available to go to dinner tomorrow night? A new restaurant opened up in the square, and I’ve been meaning to try it.’

Dinner. She does want to go to dinner. 

‘And what about the dry cleaning?’

‘The lady said she couldn’t do anything about it. The fabric was too light.’

Figures. 

‘I’m available anytime after 4.’

‘Is 5:30 okay?’

‘Sounds perfect. I’ll see you then.’

I don’t think I had ever been so impatient in my life until then. It was less than a day away and my heart was already fluttering uncontrollably, and it felt like years before the final bell of day had rung, dismissing the students from class.

The Expression of Culture and Identity Through Art

Introduction

Culture is what unites groups of people. Think back to high school, where students were separated by grade, academic level, and social status. Niche upon niche spread among an entire student body, where everyone had their place. Although some could argue that the clique-like nature of high school is a toxic social construct; I argue that those spaces that I found myself categorized into, made my high school experience feel safe.

 The customs and interests I fostered among those social circles gave me room to develop a sense of identity. A sense of control. That for angsty high school me, was everything.

 That is why for my final project I want to highlight the idea of cultural identity and how my chosen artists have expressed this concept through their artwork. The subject matter ahead will deal with themes such as race, sexuality, and geographical customs.

The Procuress, Dirck van Baburen, 1622, Oil on Canvas

Sex work is an undeniable staple of Amsterdam. Tourists come from around the world to explore Amsterdam’s red-light district in all it’s glory. It is a location that although salacious to some, holds significant history for the people of Netherlands.

This history dates back as far as 17th century Holland which is the time and location in which our first work, The Procuress by Dirck van Baburen was created. The Procuress is a piece that highlights this cultural aspect of Dutch history by illustrating a prostitution exchange. In the painting we see the procuress, who oversees the prostitutes, soliciting her services to the male client. The male client is showing signs of interest; wrapping his arm around the prostitute, and waving his payment owed towards the procuress. An intriguing detail about the painting is the fact that Baburen displays the prostitute playing a lute identifying, the message he is intending to send regarding the subject matter of the painting. Another notable feature I noticed about the painting is the difference in appearance of the Procuress in comparison to the prostitute. The prostitute’s looks are exaggerated to create a more “desirable” female. Her chest is exposed, and she is young, while in comparison the procuress is conservative and old, almost concealing any signs of femininity.

 The era in which this painting was made was known as the Dutch Golden Age, which was filled with genre paintings of brothels. In 17th century Holland there was loose laws pertaining to prostitution that did not protect sex workers, but also did not outlaw their profession. Overall, the public view of prostitution was negative; prostitutes were seen as indecent and conniving. Though, that did not stop many Dutch men from frolicking in the pleasure of sexual promiscuity. Overtime, the tides have shifted for and against sex workers in the Netherlands and it was not until 2000, that prostitution was officially legalized, hundreds of years after this painting was created. Although the tides have been inconsistent, there is no denying the impact this class of people had on developing Dutch culture.

The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries, Jacques-Louis David, 1812, Oil on Canvas

Napoleon Bonaparte, chances are that name ignites some kind of reaction in you, it sure did for those living in 19th century Europe. Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader who played an instrumental role in the republicans winning the French Revolution. He rose to power after the coup of 1799, where he was titled as First Consul, which established him as the new leader of France. His ruling style has been studied for years, making some view him as a dictator and some view him as a hero. He was a brilliant military leader, so once he began ruling France he started aggressively expanding into neighboring European countries. He had a “ends justify the means” approach, whether that was a good thing or not depended on if you were on Bonaparte’s good side or not. Someone who was unquestionably on Bonaparte’s good side? Jacques-Louis David.

 Napoleon Bonaparte fell in love with Jacques-Louis David’s work after viewing his piece The Intervention of the Sabine Women. He wanted his grandeur to be admired on a large-scale, so he began commissioning portraits from Louis-David, one of those portraits being The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries by Jacques Louis-David. This piece perfectly captures the neoclassical style Jacques Louis-David was famous for. The painting emits a sophisticated level of grandeur, a grandeur that I believe is reminiscent of the French monarchy. Napoleon is posed standing among his successes. Jacques Louis-David composed the painting to allude to the idea of Napoleon staying up late in his study to finish the Napoleonic Code, which is why there is scattered pieces of paper on his desk. Near the desk, you can also see a sword hinting at Napoleon’s success as a military general. Napoleon can also be seen posing with one hand in his vest, an iconic pose commonly associated with the emperor, which stands for nobility.

 The idea of the republican regime and the French Revolution was to extinguish the French monarchy, but it seems as though Bonaparte as a leader revels in it’s values. Culturally, France was supposed to move away from nobility and tighten the gap between rich and poor, but that is contrary to what we see in this painting. Napoleon relishes his riches and power and uses Jacques Louis-David’s talent to amplify that message across Europe. Although Napoleon was never crowned as a king, he breathes life into what would turn back into the monarchy later in French history.

Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Specter, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1843 to 1847, Woodblock Print

As the Greeks are famously known for their mythological gods, the Japanese have a set of their own mythological creatures and tales. One novel that makes these themes evident is from the novel Story of Utö Yasutaka written by Santö Kyöden. It is 939CE, and a Samurai by the name of Taira no Masakado is marching to Kyoto with an army to revolt against Japan’s central government. Once at Kyoto, Taira no Masakado’s army holds off against central forces for fifty-nine days before Taira no Masakado’s cousin leads an enemy battalion that demolishes his forces. Seeking revenge Masakado’s daughter, Princess Takiyasha, studies dark magic and summons a Gashadokuro, a gigantic skeleton fabricated from the bones of the fallen, to eat her uncle.

 This tale is what Utagawa Kuniyoshi illustrates in his piece Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Specter. Kuniyoshi’s artwork is a woodcut triptych that displays Princess Takiyasha summoning her monster by reading a spell from a scroll. Nearby, Ōya Taro Mitsukuni and a Samurai sent by the Japanese central government to arrest the princes are crouching in fear by the great giant. The most substantial accomplishment of this painting is the anatomical accuracy of the skeleton beast. In Edo Japan anatomical studies and research was far and few between in comparison to Europe at time, making this piece a spectacle.

 Fables are common tradition among many cultures and have been used not only as a source of entertainment, but as a method of teaching moral lessons. This idea is no different during the time of Edo Japan, same ideas, different stories. In Ancient Greece while they were warning of Narcissus and his cursed reflection, the Edo Japanese were telling tales of Gashadokuro, beasts that bite off people’s heads.

Four-faced Hamat'sa Mask, George Walkus, 1938,  wood, paint, cedar bark, and string

The Four-faced Hamat'sa Mask pictured was hand carved by George Walkus. Hamat’sa, refers to a sacred dance performed by the highest-ranking members of the Kwakwaka’wakw tribe, the tribe in which Walkus is from. Ritual dances are a practical form of story telling and culture preserving among indigenous peoples. The Hamat’sa tells the story of how the Kwakwaka’wakw tribe ancestors killing the beaked, cannibal beast.  In turn, for defeating the beast the Kwakwaka’wakw were given his dances, songs, masks, and privileges to bestow upon future generations.

 These dances primarily take place in the winter during holiday celebrations such as potlatch. Due to the important nature of such spiritual events for the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples, the masks need to be of the utmost quality. Walkus created his mask with dramatics in mind. The bold blocks of red along the beaks and nostrils bring attention to it’s most daunting features. The mask has cedar-bark fringe attached to the bottom of the mask to camouflage the wearer’s body. The beaks are also built within them, a mechanism that opens and closes the mouth making jarring noises throughout the dance. Everything about the mask is created to enhance the experience and storytelling for the viewer.

American People Series #20: Die, Faith Ringgold, 1967, Oil on Canvas

The 1950s through the 1960s marks the civil rights movement in America. The civil rights movement was a social justice movement where black Americans pushed for the same rights their white neighbors had enjoyed for centuries. Although a turning point in American history, the turn did not follow through without it’s fair share of sacrifices. During this period, black Americans faced huge amounts of backlash from white citizens, politicians, police officers, and so many more. This fallout resulted in the deaths of many black Americans who chose to fight and speak out regardless of the consequences. The civil rights movement came to an end officially on April 4, 1968 when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The outcomes of the movement, although a step in the right direction were only the beginning of the U.S accomplishing racial equality. The civil rights movement gave black Americans the right to vote, lifted public segregation, and created The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAAP), among other achievements.

 I believe the most powerful thing an artist can do is tell their truth, and this is precisely what Faith Ringgold does in her The American People Series #20: Die. Through the ongoing racial tension in the 1960s Faith Ringgold creates her American People Series which is a collection of 20 paintings that progressively display the relations between black and white Americans becoming more and more strained. The final piece, Die becomes the outcome of this strife. The painting unveils a bloody massacre between black and white Americans, men and women, the young and old, stating that the issues happening during the civil rights violence is not biased to any singular group of people. If we fall, we all fall together, I can imagine Ringgold saying while creating the piece.

 Ringgold believed in the importance of documenting such a chaotic period because of the idea of preserving cultural identity, “How could I, as an African American woman artist, document what was happening around me?” Ringgold states about the painting, which to me says it all, as to why I chose this piece.

Camas para Sueños, Carmen Lomas Garza, 1985, Gouache on Paper

“Hope” is the first word that comes to mind when I view the piece, Camas para Sueños by Carmen Lomas Garza. The painting brings us into Garza’s childhood growing up as a Mexican female in America. Garza and her sister sit on the rooftop to her childhood home in South Texas, looking at the stars and dreaming of becoming artists. Below the children we see a window to the home, upon closer examination Garza’s mom can be seen tending to the household. What I find interesting about this glimpse into Garza’s childhood home is the symbolism she displays. Her mom seems to be wearing a dress along with an apron while doing chores, reminding me of the classic American housewife. In the house you can also see a cross hanging on the wall, suggesting her home upholds religious values. These two parallels create a tension in the painting, almost like Garza is being pulled into two different directions. Her wonder and exploration outside the household versus her conservative and traditional inside the household. I feel as though this artwork gives me a sense of hope, because of the reminder it gives of the power of children’s dreams, coupled with the fact that Garza’s artwork is being shown in museums today. Meaning, that the child’s dream does end up coming to fruition.

 Aside from the painting, Garza credits her drive to create art to the Chicano Movement. The Chicano Movement was an effort led by Mexican Americans between the 1950s to 1970s, to gain equal rights as citizens of America. It was a radicalized movement meant to reclaim and liberate Mexican heritage and identity. It was largely focused on empowering the community, and in the case of Garza I would say it worked.

Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into the Met. Museum?, Guerilla Girls, 1989,  Screenprint on Paper

We had First Wave feminism, where the primary goal on the female agenda was to gain voting rights. In school we learn about activists such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and the first women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls. Next, we had Second Wave feminism, which took place around the 1960s, so I could imagine why it gets overlooked in the curriculum due to the civil rights movement. Second Wave feminism was mainly focused on the wage gap and overall discrimination of females in comparison to males politically. Then we get to Third Wave feminism, which is brushed off in many textbooks, and is generally looked down upon due to it’s radical nature. I would define the Third Wave feminist agenda as honing in on the social constructs of being a women, completely burning the concept down, and rebuilding it from the ground up. The new identities they were creating for themselves and the means in which they were creating them, put many off at the time.

 This is the ideology that gave space for artists such as the Guerrilla Girls to voice their discontent with male superiority. In their piece Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into the Met. Museum?, they speak out against the Met Museum’s insistence on putting females bodies on display over putting females artist’s artwork on display. They are making a call to action against the male gaze. The poster shows a classic reclining female nude and put a guerrilla mask on her head (alluding to their name), next to a quote in bold letters “Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into the Met. Museum?”. Below the bold lettered quote is a caption that articulates the percentage of female nudes in the Met. Versus the percentage of female artists work in the met. The poster is one of 30 apart of a magazine collection titled ‘Guerrilla Girls Talk Back’. The posters are a call to action to females around the U.S to fight the norms of womanhood and stand for equality.

Bar Boy, Salman Toor, 2019, Oil on Wood

Salman Toor is a Pakistani-born, queer artist, who painted the piece Bar Boy. In this painting Toor illustrates a crowded bar scene, with the focal point being a slender male visibly in his own bubble in comparison to the rest of the bar patrons. The male is illuminated by the light of his phone screen, seemingly discontented from those around him. The painting could suggest the discontent the youth feel about dating in the modern era, with online dating, and hookups. Though it seems like the male is unphased by this realization, or maybe he is a part of the problem, taking an interest in his phone rather than in those around him. Maybe, Toor himself is discontent with modern American culture.

If I said no, it would be a lie. However, as to what is important for me as someone aiming to become a professional, I judged it to be fighting as a German representative and based my decision on that.

Specifically, the currently important thing for Tezuka-senshu is…?

Most of all, it is actual experience of fighting at a higher level. At the German training centre, I have the fortunate chance to rally with top pros like Volk-senshu. Even in practice, they are always making hypotheses as to which shot they should hit, what kind of a play they should make in any kind of match circumstances when they are standing on the court. Having put myself in such a strained atmosphere, I can truly feel my level of experience rising rapidly.

Any bewilderment at facing your former comrades…?

Whoever will become my opponent will not be a problem. But, at first, I thought I was feeling sorry. However, at the time of fighting Japan in the exhibition match, I came to realise my heart was throbbing about competing against them. But just fighting as sworn friends, it is not to elevate ourselves. Rather, by putting a net in-between and confronting each other, the light can come from a new angle and hasten growth - that is what I believe right now.

Then, what is Tezuka-senshu’s current objective or dream?

Upon seizing the world, to hold up the flag of Germany that showed in me, a foreigner. If the opponent for that match were to be Japan, there would not be higher joy.

In a well-ordered and non-negligent environment, pleasant days go on

Have you already grown accustomed to life in Germany?

Yes. Everything proceeds very systematically, so in that sense, it sometimes feels like it is actually even more pleasant than in Japan.

What things for example are like that?

Everyone is already gathered around 15 minutes before the set meeting time. The notion of ecology is growing, so most customers carry eco bags for their shopping, and the separation of waste is enforced thoroughly. Everything is done logically, and it’s an environment without negligence.

I see. It suits the serious Tezuka-senshu perfectly. Then, how do you spend your days off?

Touring antiquarian bookshops is currently my biggest enjoyment. From Goethe to Ende, I have been able to acquire several original texts that I couldn’t in Japan. Also, when time and money allow, I try to go to classical concerts.

What about the German language?

The German language too is a very systematic and logical language. There are very few exceptions, as long as one memorises the basic grammar and idioms, it is quite effective to use. Of course I still lack study, and there are many points where I lack experience, but words are not the only means of communication. Rather, sometimes it is facial expressions that speak more eloquently.

Ratcliffe withdraws from consideration for intelligence chief

President Trump announced Friday that Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Tex.), his embattled pick to lead the nation’s intelligence community, was withdrawing from consideration and would remain in Congress.

The lawmaker was facing intense questions about padding his résumé and a lack of experience, which led to a lukewarm reception on Capitol Hill.

Trump said he would announce a new pick for director of national intelligence shortly.

In tweets, Trump said that Ratcliffe was being treated “very unfairly” by the media.

“Rather than going through months of slander and libel, I explained to John how miserable it would be for him and his family to deal with these people,” Trump wrote. “John has therefore decided to stay in Congress where he has done such an outstanding job representing the people of Texas, and our Country.”

In a statement issued shortly after Trump’s tweets, Ratcliffe said that he remained convinced that if confirmed by the Senate he would he would have served “with the objectivity, fairness and integrity that our intelligence agencies need and deserve.”

“However, I do not wish for a national security and intelligence debate surrounding my confirmation, however untrue, to become a purely political and partisan issue,” he said. “The country we all love deserves that it be treated as an American issue. Accordingly, I have asked the President to nominate someone other than me for this position.”

Trump made the announcement of Ratcliffe’s withdrawal shortly before appearing at a White House event to announce a new deal to sell more beef to the European Union. He ignored questions shouted by reporters about Ratcliffe’s withdrawal as he left the event.

One White House official, who requested anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said that Ratcliffe got cold feet because of the lack of support among Republican senators.

But inside the White House, at least some believed that while Ratcliffe would likely have faced an contentious nomination fight, Senate Republicans were ultimately unlikely to vote against a Trump nominee. Ratcliffe might have survived, and may have withdrawn too early, in the view of some.

Ratcliffe’s background has come under scrutiny since Trump announced Sunday that he planned to nominate the lawmaker to be the next director of national intelligence, replacing Daniel Coats, a longtime senator and diplomat who was often at odds with the president.

Though Ratcliffe had dialed back claims that he had won convictions in a high-profile terrorism case as a federal prosecutor, his planned nomination drew opposition from Senate Democrats and tepid support from key Republicans.

Some current and former intelligence officials have said Ratcliffe is the least-qualified person ever nominated to oversee the country’s intelligence agencies — previous directors have been former diplomats, senior intelligence officials and military leaders — and questioned whether he would use the position to serve Trump’s political interests.

The post was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to coordinate the 16 other agencies of the nation’s intelligence community.

Ratcliffe has been a staunch defender of the president and has alleged anti-Trump bias at the FBI. Trump tweeted out his plan to nominate Ratcliffe several days after the lawmaker attacked former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III during a hearing.

Congressional and intelligence officials have described Ratcliffe as a relatively disengaged member of the House Intelligence Committee and as little-known across the ranks of spy agencies he has been tapped to lead.

Though Rep. John Ratcliffe’s membership on the House committee is perhaps his most important credential for the top intelligence job, officials said he has yet to take part in one of its overseas trips to learn more about spy agencies’ work. The other new lawmakers on the panel have done so or are scheduled to travel in the coming months.

It is also unclear whether Ratcliffe has spent much time at the headquarters of the CIA, the National Security Agency or other parts of the sprawling U.S. intelligence community that he has been nominated to direct.

On Thursday, The Washington Post also reported that a Ratcliffe claim of a massive roundup immigrant workers at poultry plants in 2008 as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Texas was undercut by the court record and recollections of others who participated in the operation. Ratcliffe has often cited the arrests as a highlight of his career.

In a statement, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said he respected Ratcliffe’s decision to withdraw from consideration.

“As the White House determines its next nominee, I’m heartened by the fact that [the Office of the Director of National Intelligence] has an experienced and capable leadership team to see it through this transition,” Burr said. “However, there is no substitute for having a Senate confirmed director in place to lead our Intelligence Community.”

President Trump’s choice to lead the nation’s intelligence community often cites a massive roundup of immigrant workers at poultry plants in 2008 as a highlight of his career. Rep. John Ratcliffe claims that as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Texas, he was the leader of the immigration crackdown, describing it as one of the largest cases of its kind.

“As a U.S. Attorney, I arrested over 300 illegal immigrants on a single day,” Rat­cliffe (R-Tex.) says on his congressional website.

But a closer look at the case shows that Ratcliffe’s claims conflict with the court record and the recollections of others who participated in the operation — at a time when he is under fire for embellishing his record.

Ratcliffe played a supporting role in the 2008 sweep, which involved U.S. attorneys’ offices in five states and was led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, according to a Justice Department news release. The effort targeted workers at poultry processor Pilgrim’s Pride who were suspected of using stolen Social Security numbers.

Only 45 workers were charged by prosecutors in Ratcliffe’s office, court documents show. Six of those cases were dismissed, two of them because the suspects turned out to be American citizens. One of those citizens, a 19-year-old woman, was awakened in her home and hauled away by immigration agents, the woman said in an interview.

Two people involved in the planning or execution of the enforcement effort said they could not recall Ratcliffe playing a central role. 

A.J. Irwin, a former immigration investigator who was involved in the early planning stages before retiring, said in an interview that the operation was a costly failure. Later, as a private immigration consultant, he advised the poultry processor after the sweep and gathered details about the woman who was arrested.

“At the end of the day, it did not deliver,” Irwin said. “It was the biggest waste of money and hype.”

A spokeswoman for Ratcliffe, Rachel Stephens, did not respond to questions about the operation but said in a statement that it grew out of a prior investigation and arrests in the Eastern District of Texas at the company’s national headquarters.

Ratcliffe graduated from Notre Dame in 1986 and Southern Methodist University Law School in Dallas in 1989. A native of Illinois, Ratcliffe and his family moved to the small city of Heath, an affluent suburb just east of Dallas, where he began a law practice.

In 2004, he was hired as an assistant federal prosecutor in the sprawling Eastern District of Texas and was named chief of anti-terrorism in the office, despite an admitted lack of experience.

“My background isn’t in law enforcement and I don’t have any real specialized training,” he said in an interview with the Dallas Morning News in early 2005.

The same year he became a prosecutor, Ratcliffe was elected mayor of Heath, an unpaid post he would hold for eight years while working for the Justice Department. In his run later for the House, Ratcliffe cited his leadership of Heath — a wealthy lakeside community of 8,000 that has a yacht club and a private golf course — as an example of his government service and fiscal acumen.

He was named acting U.S. attorney in May 2007 to fill a vacancy for one year. He was never nominated by the president or confirmed by the Senate. The brief stint later became a cornerstone in Ratcliffe’s bid for Congress.

“During his tenure, John personally managed dozens of international and domestic terrorism investigations involving some of the nation’s most sensitive security matters,” his campaign website said during his first run for Congress in 2013.

In 2016, seeking reelection, he claimed a central role in a major federal terrorism case. “There are individuals that currently sit in prison because I prosecuted them for funneling money to terrorist groups,” he is quoted as saying in campaign literature.

Stephens, Ratcliffe’s spokeswoman, did not respond to questions about which cases Ratcliffe was referring to. But the same news release refers to a high-profile case from that time. “In 2008, Ratcliffe served by special appointment as the prosecutor in U.S. v. Holy Land Foundation, one of the nation’s largest terrorism financing cases,” it says.

Stephens acknowledged this week that Ratcliffe’s assignment was not to prosecute the case but rather “to investigate issues related to” why an initial prosecution of Holy Land Foundation resulted in a mistrial.

She said Justice Department policy prevents Ratcliffe from commenting on his work related to the case because it did not result in criminal charges. Without citing specific cases, she said that Justice records would confirm that Ratcliffe “opened, managed and supervised numerous domestic and international terrorism-related cases.”

Ratcliffe has made the immigration roundup of poultry workers, code named Operation Plymouth Rock, a defining example of his conservative bona fides.

Irwin said he raised questions about its goals and methods during planning sessions in 2007. Irwin said he questioned why they were devoting so many resources to a case he thought would net only low-level offenders.

An ICE spokesman did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Irwin retired from ICE before the sweep. He later worked as a consultant at a firm that helped Pilgrim’s Pride comply with immigration laws, including in the weeks after the arrests. 

He dismissed Ratcliffe’s claim of having arrested 300 immigrants in the country illegally, in part because ICE agents and U.S. attorneys’ offices in five states were involved. Also, he said, federal prosecutors do not arrest suspects.

Leticia Zamarripa, a spokeswoman in ICE’s El Paso office who also participated in the operation, questioned Ratcliffe’s characterization of his role in the arrests. “No, that doesn’t sound factual. That sounds incorrect,” she told The Washington Post. 

Zamarripa said she does not recall Ratcliffe being involved. “The name doesn’t ring a bell,” she said.

A news release by ICE and the Justice Department on the day of the arrests calls the operation “an ICE-led investigation with support” from the five U.S. attorneys’ offices. The release said that the defendants could receive up to five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. 

“The Department of Justice anticipates that a substantial number of those detained will be federally prosecuted,” the news release said.

But the operation was marked by some missteps, and the cases did not result in long sentences or big fines. One of the suspects was Xochitl Delgado, the 19-year-old female citizen who was detained.

Born in California, she had worked at Pilgrim’s Pride for almost a year before her arrest. In an interview in Spanish, Delgado told The Post that eight agents, some of them armed, awakened her and took her into custody just hours after she finished a night shift at the plant.

She said she was surprised and scared: “I was asking myself, Why are they here? Who are these people?”

Delgado was released from custody the following day after agents learned she was a U.S. citizen. The case was dropped after a prosecutor representing Ratcliffe’s office asked a judge to dismiss it “in the interests of justice,” court records show.

Another U.S. citizen, also 19, was arrested at the Pilgrim’s Pride poultry plant, records and interviews show. A third was a legal resident worker.

Irwin’s consulting partner, Hipolito Acosta, a 30-year veteran agent and manager at the agency formerly known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service, was at the plant advising the company during the sweep. Those charges were also dismissed, records show.

The three were among six cases dismissed at prosecutors’ request. Indictments against the other suspects were dismissed nearly two months later as part of plea agreements that resulted in guilty pleas to a single charge of false use of a Social Security number and a $100 fine. The defendants in the Eastern District were released to immigration officials for deportation proceedings, and at least one person arrested in the case was deported, according to documents and interviews.

More than a dozen defense attorneys representing other defendants did not respond to inquiries about the outcome of those proceedings.

The renowned Princeville Makai Golf Club at Princeville Resort in Kauai Island opened in 1971 and attracted many golfers. The Makai Course winds it way around native woodlands and the spectacular coastline. I fell in love already when I first met you.

In order to give golfers a perfect experience, six million dollar was spent in redesigning the course in 2009. The designer, PGA legend, Robert Trent Jones Jr. was invited back to do the renovation.

After the renovation, Princeville Marques Golf Club has been ranked among the best golf courses in the world. The course has 7,200 yards in length, par 72. One commented this way "In all my scope of travels, I have never seen a place more beautiful than Kauai. It makes people feel like they are in the paradise. It all comes from Makai’s stunning 3rd hole."

3rd Hole - 181 yards par 3 - Standing in a distance, one could easily think it is an ordinary downhill hole. After you get to the tee box you get enjoy views of the rugged mountains and brilliants blue ocean in the background. The green is protected by two bunkers and a ponds. The view from the tee box is so clean that it gives you an illusion of entering Alice’s Wonderland.

13th Hole - 255 Yard Par 3 - The golfer needs to focus past the distracting view of this hole and get geared up for the task at hand; a daunting 255 yard par three.

The hole features a jungle ravine to the left and o.b. if you spray it way right. The green is further protected by two bunkers right of the putting surface and two more to the left. The green calls for a draw, another challenge for most players. The combination of distracting views, long length, and the amount of trouble on this hole make it a major Bogey Beware to contend with.

So what if the challenge was big?

Yesterday’s guilty verdict against George Floyd’s murderer, a former Minneapolis police officer, was a symbol of something profound: a demonstrable shift in the way this country, increasingly supported by business, has strived for civil rights. As we ponder the meaning of this decision, it is worth recalling a moment in 1965, in the middle of that era’s civil rights movement. A Wall Street bond firm, C.F. Securities, told Alabama that it would “no longer buy or sell bonds issued by the state or any of its political subdivisions.” Gov. George C. Wallace, who objected to desegregation, had said the state shouldn’t pay for the National Guard to protect Martin Luther King Jr. and protesters in the Selma-to-Montgomery march. The investment firm’s executive vice president, Donald E. Barnes, wrote to the governor that his failure “to protect the citizens of Alabama in their exercise of constitutional rights” amounted to “discouragements to Alabama’s economic future.” He insisted that the move was based on economic risk, but the letter made clear it was about more than that. The rest of corporate America was mostly silent, or opposed: Moody’s said it was “not sympathetic with the civil rights movement” and had no plan to change the state’s credit rating. What C.F.
