absolutely genius of rf kuang to elaborate on virtually nothing about speer's culture. the only things said about speer are "speerlies are mindless savages" and "speerlies are most definitely not mindless savages". there are no deep dives, no explanations of their way of life, nothing beyond the glimpses that disproves nikan's belief that they are nothing but a violent group. we saw that they had leaders that cared about their people and children. we saw that they are people who found joy in life. but that's really not much.
this emphasizes the horror of genocide. millenia of culture and history, individual lives filled with love, pain, and passion, just completely wiped away. there were only two surviving speerlies. one of them was too young when he was taken away, and probably doesn't remember much. the things he did remember was also probably buried under years of abuse and drugs people were plying him with. the other one didn't even know she was from speer until the last few months of her life, and there was really no one around to teach her about their culture. and if there was, life as she knows it was falling apart. learning about her dead people's culture probably didn't even cross her mind.
without saying any of these things and by intentionally leaving readers in the dark about what speer was truly like, rf kuang said so much about the horrors of genocide. by not saying anything, she said everything. she did the "show me, don't tell me" tip for writers and it was brilliant.
we will never learn most of speer's culture and history and that was the point.

dont mind me, im just thinking about how even after all the shit she saw in golyn niis, rin still had some hope that she would be able to deal with it and move on bc altan had done so after speer, and she went looking for him, bc if he could just tell her that she would be okay then she would keep trying, but then she found him getting high bc he in fact had not been able to deal with it, and thats when she finally lost all hope, finding out that altan was an addict was the thing that finally destroyed her heart, bc he was the strongest person she knew, he was her hero and commander, even after he was an asshole to her she still admired and respected his strength, and if the guy she looked up to had lost hope, had never been who she thought he was, than what chances did she have?

Altan Trengsin was doomed from the start. Mans had death flags written all over him, alongside all the regular red ones. And even after, he haunted the narrative, never letting go, forever ingrained in every step the others took, every action and decision and planned move. Everywhere they went, he was there. He became the epitome of rage, the incarnation of pure, unbridled fury. He came close to being a god, yet found that he was so incredibly human, so incapable of ever crossing the line into divinity (for his immense shortcomings rivaled his immense strength) that he was unable. He was set up for failure when he needed to win the most. He was let down by everything he ever put his faith into. He became anger. He became vengeance. Never in his life did he know the warmth of love, the comfort of reciprocated acts of kindness, the selflessness in caring and being cared for. And when he was faced with it he still couldn't understand. When he saw a glimpse of it he realized he had no place for that in his heart, for all left inside was charred bone and ash. And by "no place for that in his heart" I don't mean he didn't want it. Of course he wanted it. Though he wanted revenge a bit more. He had no place for selfless love in his heart the same way a body rejects medicine, viscerally, unconsciously, unwillingly, because it is incapable of carrying that with him, because it is a foreign thing he's never known, and it's far too late for assimilation. He tried. The phoenix knows he tried.
UGH I wanna study him like a bug

sometimes I think about how broken altan was. he lived most of his life thinking that he's the last of his people and when he found out that there was someone else? that he's not actually alone? did they share a tearful reunion like long lost family? at that point, even if they don't know how they're related, they were the closest thing to blood related family they would ever have. but no. barely acknowledging the fact that he and rin are the last of the speerlies, altan had her dive straight to training. and it just breaks my heart for altan, who was exploited and abused and betrayed at every turn of his life. altan, who was gifted and smart and strong, but who was truly only a shell of the person he could have been. would he have been funny? calm? would he have affectionately teased rin like a big brother? in an alternate universe maybe he would have. but the altan I know did not. altan trengsin, who could have been a brilliant flame if people didn't try to constantly extinguish him.

rin and chaghan were so funny as a dynamic when altan was alive and even sometimes after because on one side rin was deeply struggling with experiencing familial love and her new powers/identity as a speerly/nikara girl and seeking validation from people she looked up to after being treated like dirt her entire life with altan who also didn’t know how to deal with family relationships because they were both war orphans and on the other side chaghan just rly wanted to fuck rin’s cousin
