Fortnight of Books: Day 1

Overall - best books read in 2023?

Of new-to-me books, the standouts of my year include (in rough chronological order of when I read them):

Endurance by Alfred Lansing: Thrilling and harrowing account of Shackleton's South Pole expedition. It made me very grateful as I went through my day-to-day life--no matter how bad things were, at least I had eaten things that weren't seal meat.

Daisy Miller and Washington Square by Henry James: Short, sad little novellas that drew me in with their compassionate realism and added a new name to my list of favorite classic authors.

A Field Guide to Mermaids by Emily B. Martin: Beautifully illustrated book that provides a detailed world of mermaid species and provides lots of interesting facts about the natural world. Child me would have loved this.

Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell: I hated the ending, and the structure was very weird, but this was a look at a side of Victorian London I rarely see in literature, with some great characters and a really interesting dive into the issues in the background of North and South.

Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin: It gave me an obsession with Lincoln's Cabinet. I still sometimes stop and think, "I need to read about some Seward shenanigans."

Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard: Extremely readable history book that provided a lot of food for my obsession with James Garfield's and Chester Arthur's presidencies.

The Q by Beth Brower: Victorian Ruritanian fiction about a female newspaper tycoon that has a murky plot but also one of my favorite romantic couples of the year, one of the best tributes to autumn I've read, and most importantly (the real reason it's on this list), introduced me to the author of my favorite series of the year (more below).

Desire and The Good Comrade by Una L. Silsberrad: Forgotten turn-of-the-century women's fiction with some great female leads trying to find a place in society. Desire is a bit more literary while The Good Comrade is a bit more fun, but both were just the type of story that tends to make my list of favorites.

The Romance of a Shop by Amy Levy: Fun sister story with some fun romances. Very easy to read and provided a fascinating look at the world of Victorian photography.

The Law and the Lady by Wilkie Collins: I was so invested in the main character, a woman who would overcome anything that tried to stop her from helping her husband.

The Heir of Redclyffe by Charlotte Mary Yonge: The prose is dense and the author's too preachy, but this had some of my favorite characters of the year (Charles Edmonstone my beloved).

Best series you discovered in 2023?

The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion. If it weren't for this question, it would be at the top spot in the last list. They hit so many sweet spots for my perfect comfort read--Victorian England, memorable characters, lightly fantastical setting, fun narrative voice, friendships and comedy and heartbreak and literature and just so much fun.

Best reread of the year?

Definitely The Lord of the Rings. I had liked the series after my first read, but my appreciation was mostly bolstered by the fact that I'm surrounded by a huge fandom for it. This year's reread made me truly appreciate it for the masterwork it is and made it a cornerstone of my interior life.

If it weren't for that, this spot would go to A Christmas Carol, because I was shocked to find that it really is good enough to earn its dominant place in pop culture. The descriptions of Christmas are some of the best things in literature.

Zajok a nappaliból – Traxelektor 2023. 04.

Egy éve voltak a választások, és beszélnünk kell a politikáról! Mint léteznek konzervatív-keresztények vagy liberális-materialisták (meg ezek minden permutációja), nem tudom, kell-e nyomatékosítanom, hogy a Traxelektor a randomista-krosszfédista irányzatot képviseli, ami a legprogresszívebb liberális traxelekcionista audiofilozófia? Ámde barátaim, olvasóim! Már régóta tudom, hogy köreinkben is felütötte a fejét a konzervatív restauráció, a meghaladott múlt felélesztése iránti, őstől örökölt retrográd vágy. Persze honnan jönne a késszúrás, ha nem pár lépésről, ahonnan nem várná a szelektor – nos léteznek, konkrétan köztünk élnek olyanok, aki a spotify playlist-et alfabetikus sorrendben hallgatják, krosszféd nélkül. De! Mi soha nem vetemednénk arra, hogy elhallgattassuk mások playlistjeit, hogy krosszfédeljük a hitük szerinti, számukra élest, ezért álljon itt ez a gif megbékélésünk jeléül:

Andrea, akit megkülönböztetésül a „torinói” (sötét ló) jelzővel próbálok jelölni saját gyűjteményemben, a discogson Andrea (99) – az se rossz. Két év szünet után (Sktch EP, 2021) a második albuma jelent meg, szokás szerint, a bajor Ilian Tape-nél. A Due in Color a trip-hop, ambient, abstract-breaks, glitch elektronika területein cselleng meglehetősen nagy bátorsággal, s talán váratlanul nagy magabiztossággal. A sodrás és a konstans rúgóállandó mozgatja Novantanovesimo Andrea mechanikai szerkezeteit, felhőként lebegő dallamszigeteit, köztük nem kevés zenei közhelyt, ami engem itt nem zavar. Az összkép tehát egy ibizoid chillemfaszlemúr kisimult tekintete fürkészte félsivatag. Andi, nézzed!

Svejcisapkás zenetéri rikkancsként kiabálom: Tessék, sláger! Tessék sláger! Megjelent az új Tagadás Évei!

Barkosina Hanusova és Jerome Tcherneyan, azaz a Years of Denial - Suicide Disco Vol. 2 albumáról van szó. A 2019-es első nyomvonalán halad a kettes, bár mintha itt nagyobb lenne az átlagos kályhától való távolság. Synthwave, ebm, industrial, néha electro, néha synth – na ez mind szépen végigfut az erősen fülbemászó dalok alatt, úgyhogy ez végül is electro-clash 2023 edition.

James Clements űrhajója az Ultimae Galaxisba tévedt ismét. Az új ASC album - Hiding In Plain Sight – a Solar Fields/Aes Dana hangzásával játszadozik, még ha néhol a FSOL - Lifeforms-szának , korai Autechre-ek dubjai is visszhangoznak a szélesre tárt térben. Clements a szokásos asc-elemeket se engedte el, azaz a tér töredezik is, hajlik is, réteg-réteg hátán, de több a fém és több a kő is.

Még mindig az egyik személyes kedvencem az amadindányi ütőssel felszerelten varázsló Sam Shackleton. Korábbi zsenijei – a Departing Like Rivers (2021), The Majestic Yes (2022) – felejthetetlenek, újra elővevősek, de újabb mozzanatai se okoznak csalódást. Shigeru Ishiharával párban követték el a legújabb Shackleton „tripet”, azaz a Death By Tickling albumot Scotch Rolex & Shackleton jegyzik. Spotifyon ne keresd, itt lesz

Jönnek a kinaiak! Már megint. Ez jutott eszembe, meg hogy ez most eleven, húsba vágóan harsány attack. Hard drum, techno, ebm csattogás a Shanghai és Taipei közt ingázó Tzu-sing, azaz Tsusing szemszögéből – mondjuk az album közepén van egy Balkanize című track, szóval messze lát az a szem. Decemberben szerepelt itt Zaliva-D, és akad némi hasonlóság, pl. a dobok, meg az unortodox ütemszerkesztés. Azért az egész  绿帽 Green Hat album – mivel kicsit sok – elég megterhelő.

Ha a Good Mornig Tapes Recordings (ez a név! :) kaziját tartod a kezedben, akár beteheted a magnóba és mehet a jóga, tökéletes alá. A georg Andro Gogibedashvili új ötszámosa, az Intrapersonal Experience, tényleg ilyen: teljesen steril, ártó gondolatoktól mentes. Persze a Saphileaum lemezek többsége ilyen pozitív vibe-ok gyűjteménye, ez most talán ezoterikusabbra lett túlfőzve.

Amikor elolvastam, hogy Magna Pia, elsőre valami magyar kormány eseményre asszociáltam, ahol Hungarikum Bizottság, a Pálinka Nemzeti Tanács, a Magyar Szőlő- és Bortermelők Szövetsége és a Magyar Sörgyártók Szövetsége jelenlétében Chartába foglalják a magyar emberek szabad iváshoz való elidegeníthetetlen jogát. A borítón elsőre rovásírásnak tűnő jelek szerint pedig itt van velünk a Szentkorona Szövetség is. Elnézést kérek – na nem az anyanyelvén, a kipcsak rokon – Hüseyin Evirgen-től, ki e pszeudó erős és büszke tulajdonosa! A Bécsben és Berlinben tevékenykedő – profilképein elszántan rónába révedő - török második albuma (Daiauna, 2018), a Qut különleges keveréke az ambient, drone, ambient-house, dub jegyeinek. Nem egyenletes a szint – és sikerült mindent összeinni mindennel – de a sűrű leftfield-idm-be fordulások, és az olyan track miatt, mint az X – mely sosem jelöli a kincs helyét – itt a helye.

Pont egy éve, tavaly áprilisban írtam egy nagyon pozitív kritikát Cosmo Vitelli albumáról, a Medhead-ről. Ahogyan a múlt is mozgásban van a jelen hatására, adott zeneszámokhoz való viszonyunk is ilyen, és hogy őszinte legyek a Medhead elég hamar elkopott, devalválódott. Most itt az újabb alkalom, hogy magamból hülyét csinálva túlértékeljek valamit: ugyanis itt a Medhead Remixes, a román Andrei Rusu, ismertebb nevén Khidja, a francia Krikor Kouchian, a szintén francia és múlt hónapban új albummal érkezett Froid Dub vagy a remixerként kiemelkedő Krokakai eltérítgetéseivel. Nagyon erős anyag – tényleg! – nem valami trendi remixeltetés a műfaji jegyeknek és kliséknek megfelelés jegyében, ellenkezőleg! Váratlan megoldások, bátor, belemenős terelések, Krikor például egy olyan dög-dubbal, amit inkább a Froidéktól vártam volna, de Andrei Rusu verziója olyan erős, hogy instrumental verzióban is működik.

Vádoljatok, hogy Orphxből építek várat, de kijelentem: jelenleg techno és indusztriál vonalon nincs nemesebb ötvözet, mint Christina Sealey és Richard Oddie moduláris részecskegyorsító vegyes párosa.

The Way Through All Things a címe a berlini Sonic Groove-nál újonnan megjelent, célrajtgyőztes suhanásuknak. Egyszerűen hibátlan, az arányok tökéletesen pontosak, az összetevők kohézióban, állandó mozgásban és ez adja a dinamikus ballanszt és a változatos konzisztenciát. A nyitó Man of Sorrows az utóbbi évtized egyik legfinomabban megmunkált technoindulója, ami annyira techno, hogy Ozorán simán megőrülne rajt a nép.

A Revenant EP után ez most már teljesen hivatalos visszatérés a páros részéről, és elkezdtek turnézni is, sajnos Budapestre nem jönnek egyelőre.

Mallorcán született, de Barcelonában él Nacho Pezzati, argentin zenei producer. Nueen pszeudó alatt készülnek a leginkább leftfield címkével jellemezhető 4-5 percesei. Igazi hangulatvarázsló a pali, a bizonytalanság végig ott vibrál zenéjében, megtörténik, hogy egy váratlan téma teljesen ütemtelenül lép be, amit a lassú sodrás elnyel, magával visz. Ugyanebben a sűrű masszában lebegnek, fuldokolnak a különféle szövegek is. Az öt címtelen tételből felépülő Link EP a berlini 3XL Recordingsnél jelent meg, de sajnos spotifyon nem tudod meghallgatni, irány a bandcamp!

RETROSPECTIVE IV SKULL DISCO Appleblim Shackleton Derrière Skull Disco se cache Appleblim et Shackleton, deux amis de longue date qui comme beaucoup d’acteurs de la scène se retrouvaient dans la petite cave mal éclairée du Plastic People pour les soirées FWD>> organisées par le crew Ammunition. Pour cet épisode, retour à Bristol pour l’un des labels les plus singuliers du mouvement.

Musicien depuis de nombreuses années, c’est en 2003 que Shackleton commence à produire sur son ordinateur. Ce fan de Post-Punk mélange les atmosphères et les genres sans jamais se poser de contraintes et son premier titre Stalker en est la meilleure preuve : sortie en 2004 sur Mordant Music, le titre est à mi chemin entre Grime, Breakbeat, Dub et musique expérimentale. Quelques mois plus tard le titre est sélectionné par Rough Trade (gros label anglais connu notamment pour sa boutique de disques à Londres) dans leurs titres préférés de l’année et l’artiste se rend compte qu’il existe un public pour ce style de musique.

En 2005, au retour d’un concert organisé par Appleblim, les deux artistes finissent la soirée ensemble pour se partager les sons sur lesquels ils ont récemment travaillés. Motivés par le récent succès de Shackleton et leur envie d’apporter leur contribution au mouvement FWD>>, Skull Disco voit le jour avec un premier vinyle (12′)’.

D’un côté Shackleton finance le projet et de l’autre Appleblim qui sort tout juste d’études de technicien du son s’occupe de la promotion. S’en suivra rapidement des soirées du même nom organisées à Londres avec un succès relatif. La partie graphique est assurée par Zeke Clough, un ami d’enfance de Shackleton qui travaillait déjà avec lui quand il s’occupait d’un fanzine de punk de nombreuses années plus tôt. Il ne fait aucun doute que son coup de crayon si particulier a contribué au succès du label.

À partir de là, Skull Disco gagne progressivement en notoriété et les sorties s’enchainent. Jusqu’en 2008, 10 vinyles seront pressés et des artistes tels que GateKeeper, Peverelist, Ramadanman ou Geiom viendront apporter leur touche via des remixes ou des collaborations. Progressivement les titres se rapprocheront des 140 bpm tout simplement pour pouvoir être joués par leurs pairs mais ne perdront jamais le style si particulier de leurs premières années.

L’aventure s’arrête finalement pour raisons personnelles et divergences de point de vue entre les deux artistes. Ils en profiteront pour réunir tout les titres sur deux albums d’une qualité exceptionnelle et d’une cohérence rare pour une compilation.

À la suite de cela, Shackleton et Appleblim prendront des chemins différents et signeront sur de nombreux labels – Hotflush, Crosstown Rebels, Immerse Records, Berkane Sol et j’en passe – avant de monter le leur : Appleblim monte Apple Pips en 2008 et Shackleton monte Woe To The Septic Heart! En 2010.

D’une influence certaine pour des labels tels que Hemlock, Hessle audio ou Osiris Musik UK, Skull Disco aura su marquer le début du mouvement Dubstep avant même qu’on lui attribue un nom. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) brit felfedező, Antarktisz-kutató, az Antarktisz-kutatás aranykorának egyik kiemelkedő alakja. Shackleton hírnevét leginkább a birodalmi transzantarktiszi expedíció hihetetlen történetének köszönheti, mely miatt őt a korabeli sajtó hősként ünnepelte. Ennek ellenére – Scott kapitánnyal ellentétben – hosszú időre feledésbe merült a neve. Később, a 20. század második felében fedezték fel újra; tevékenységét követendő példaként, modellként állítja az utókor elé a vezetéselmélet- és válságmenedzsment tudomány.

Shackleton rövid élete alatt olyan teljesítményt vitt véghez amelyek a legnagyobb sarkkutatók közé emelték őt, hősies cselekedetei pedig az emberiség példaképeinek halhatatlan csarnokába kínáltak neki helyet mindörökre.

The Boss - ahogyan csapattársai szeretettel nevezték, három nagy délsarki  expedícióban vett részt. A Discovery-expedícióban (1901-1903) Scott kapitány Wilson mellett Shackletont választotta maga mellé és hárman voltak az első emberek akik a pólushoz addig a legközelebb jutottak, elérték a 82°17′ déli szélességet. Mindhárman súlyos állapotban térnek vissza, skorbuttól, hóvakságtól szenvedve. A Nimrod-expedíciót már ő maga szervezte (1907–1909), ezen megmásszák a Mount Erebus-t amelyet James Clark Ross 1841-ben felfedezett és elnevezett. Elérik a déli mágneses pólust, teljes hosszában átkelnek a Ross-selfjégen, felfedezik a Beardmore-gleccsert, és elsőként hatolnak be az antarktiszi Sarki-fennsík központjába. Az expedícióról hazatérve, Shackletont hősként ünnepelték az Egyesült Királyságban. Felesége később azt mesélte, hogy amikor arról kérdezte férjét, hogy mi késztette arra, hogy mindössze 180 kilométerre a Déli-sarktól visszaforduljon, Shackleton csak annyit válaszolt, hogy „Egy élő szamár mégiscsak jobb, mint egy halott oroszlán, nemde?”

A birodalmi transzantarktiszi expedícióval (1914–1917) a célja az Antarktisz teljes szélességében való átszelése lett volna. Hajójukat az Endurance-t azonban odafélé úton közrefogta a jég és 8 hónapon át sodrótak így míg végül a feltorlódott jég a hajót összeroppantotta. A hajót elhagyták és a teljes legénység a felszerelés megmentett részével két hónapig élt egy sodródó jégtáblán, majd amikor az széttört alattunk, további 3 hónapig egy másik jégtáblán sodródtak. Amikor ez is széttöredezett, mentőcsónakjaikat a vízre bocsájtották és elindultak a zord Elefánt-szeigetek felé amelyet öt napos erőltetett menettel elértek, 497 nap után ez volt az első szárazföld a 28 kimerült, átfagyott ember lába alatt. Itt azonban nem maradhattak sokáig. Shackleton úgy döntött, hogy ő és néhány embere csónakba szállnak és – bármilyen lehetetlennek is tűnik – megpróbálnak eljutni az 1500 km-re (800 tengeri mérföldre) lévő Déli-Georgia szigetre, hogy segítséget hozzanak. Két folyamatos küzdelemmel töltött hét fagyos, viharos tengeri utazás után elérték Dél-Georgiát. Ez önmagában is roppant teljesítménynek számít. és itt még átkeltek a sziget eddig megmászatlan 2000m magas hegyein, ami szintén külön roppant erőfeszítést igényelt. Így érték el a bálnavadász telepet ahonnan segítséget reméltek. Ezek után megkezdődtek a mentési kísérletek amelyek további hosszú napokig, hetekig tartottak. Végül  1916. augusztus 30-án, elérték az Elefánt-szigetet, és felvették 22 hajótörött társukat. Shackleton Punta Arenasból feleségének, Emilynek küldött levelében a következőket írta: „Kedvesem! Megjártuk a poklot, de senkit nem veszítettünk el.”

Negyedik, egyben végső útján a A Shackleton–Rowett expedíció alatt (1920–1922) ismét Dél-Georgiában, Grytvikenben telep kikötöjében állomásozik. 1922. január 5-én, hajnali 2:50-kor hirtelen szívroham következtében örökre lehunyja a szemét.

Shackleton cselekedetei - akárcsak más hőstettek - felülmúlhatatlanok.

Edmund Augustus Blundell,Commissioners of Tenasserim from(1833-1843)/Resident Councillor of Malacca from(1847-1849)/Resident Councillor of Penang from(1849-1855).Born in 1804.Son of William Blundell & Mary Ann ?.He joined the service of the H.E.I.C. in the Straits Settlements in 1820 as a writer. In 1823 edition he is an assistant to the collector; in 1825 he is a deputy collector. From 1826 to 1834 he is an assistant to the Commissioner for Mergui and Tavoy. In 1835 he becomes a Commissioner for Mergui and Tavoy. From 1836 to 1840 he is a Commissioner in the Tenasserim provinces. He married to Meliora Mynors Farmar.Beside that,he had a Burmese mistress who had given him 11 childrens.He gave them his name and sent them to be educated in Calcutta and England.He died in 1868 at Harrogate.

Zajok a nappaliból – Traxelektor 2021 07

Az ohio-i Hanson Recordsnál jelent meg két experimentalista bioavantgarde szerelemgyereke a Lucy & Aaron. A kolumbiai Lucrecia Dalt és az amerikai Aaron Dilloway  is kedveli a rendhagyóan artikulált és/vagy azonmód transzformált hangokat, a tömören és egyértelműen megfogalmazott extrém hangképeket. Ezek az ismérvek inkább csak erősítették egymást a közös munka során, semmint kioltották volna, így az eredmény valami egészen furcsa electro-dada lett, helyenként oldva mélankóliával és kedves dallamokkal.

A brit psy-surf banda Japanese Television tavaly megjelent III. albumából remixelt EP 5 szerzeményéből 4 traxelektált lett, Gabriel Gurnsey (Factory Floor), James Welsh (Rise), John Paynter és James Lavelle (UNKLE) remixeiből.

A Traxelektorban az UNCLE két „Reconstruction”-nel is nevezett – a másik Krust - Hegel Dialec-jéé - és mindkettő tökéletesen a James Lavelle védjeggyel ellátott felső polcos csoda.

Egészen székbesüppedően komoly sci-fi-horror albumot sikerült Kevin Richard Martin-nak megalkotnia. A lemezborító impozáns. Az 1972-es Tarkovszkij filmklasszikusra utaló Return to Solaris anyagot 2020 májusában a belga Gent-ban található Vooruit Arts Centre invitálására rögzítette Kevin, akit The Bug néven, vagy a King Midas Sound színeiben, csapatban rendre hallhattok a Traxelektorban (is). A hét egyik kellemetlen szubjektív élménye, hogy melóból hazafelé az utcán fülbe randomban/krosszfédben elindított félkész traxelektorból dj random besorsolta az albumzáró Reject of Earth-öt, ami a hat perc végére inkább volt érzésre Reject of Brain.

Két másik kemény legény Dominick Fernow (Vatican Shadow, Prurient) és Philippe Hallais (Low Jack) is ambient-be mártotta elméjét, és ha ez így van, akkor az a Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement-et jelenti. A Flying Fish Ambience album kellemes elfekvős ambient-je, egy kb 3-5 fokos hűtéssel tölti ki a teret.

Hőmérsékletileg, műfajilag hasonló, bár jóval intenzívebb ambient élményt kínál a The Transcendence Orchestra - All Skies Have Sounded albumával. A brit technoprofesszor  Anthony Child, ismertebb nevén Surgeon Daniel Bean-nel közös ambient side-project-jéről van szó, a lemez pedig az Editions Mego-nál jelent meg. Az album hallgatása alatt rendre Pete Namlook ugrott be, bizonyos szakaszokon amikor Namlook kísérletezős vonalon mozgott, a szoftabb részeken pedig egyértelműen a klasszikus namlooki ambient köszön vissza, mint asszociáció.

És akkor itt van ez a tipikus nem láttam jönni, s mint ilyen a hónap albuma is lehetne - és még mindig ambient-ben vagyunk. Sam Shackleton új albumáról van szó, ami valami olyan különleges ötvözete az összes létező downtemp műfaj mellett a pszichedeliának, törzsinek is, hogy  egyszerűen tökéletes. A nyitó szerzemény 13 perces Something Tells Me / Pour Out Like Water bizonyos szakasza miatt fülbemászó kategóriás, miközben sorban hozza fent említetteket. Ráadásul a Departing Like Rivers egyre jobban érik a hallgatások alatt, ezt a másik két traxelektorolt műnél is megfigyeltem - The Light That Was Hidden, The Turbulent Sea - ami a mély, finoman rétegzett albumokat jellemzi. Meg merem kockáztatni, hogy az év végi Top 12 Album listán ott lesz.

James Clements betöltötte az összes a dárembézjungle dobmintáját és textúráját, és ahogy sejteni lehet, született egy kétszámos ASC jungle single Slow Down / Lucid Dream címmel.

A Detroit Filthiest okozott számomra nem kevés merengést. Hallgatom a Smoke Suggests Fire EP négy felvételét, és szemben a fent hozsannázottakkal semmi, de tényleg semmi meglepetés nincs, rongyosra játszott klisék sorjáznak – és azt hiszem ez lehet a kulcs – nanosec pontosan. Nem tudom mással magyarázni, hogy sokadszorra is révülten bólogatok a Horizontal Bop vagy a Play on Playa mesterien pontos látóhatárba tűnő loopjain.

Weird Weatheréknek új EP-je, az egész világnak meg eztán örökké tartó Weird Weather-je van. Szóval Duncan Thornley és Laurence Horstman Succulents címmel kiadta (5 év alatt) a negyedik kislemezét, srácok nem kapkodnak, ellenben nekünk így mindig eseményszámba jelennek meg. Nem tudom a fogadóirodák mennyire adják, de sanszos, hogy idén már nem lesz több WW lemez. Ha mégis, akkor majd örülünk.

Az ausztrál Jarred Beeler hatlépcsős szekvenciában játssza ki a Relentless Trills keleties trilláit, ami fura módon már albumnak számít (nálam nem lenne az). DJ Plead-et eddig inkább kollaborációkban hallhattuk Anunakuval, Cop Envy-jel közösen. A kiadvány „papíron” tavalyi, mert kazettán már akkor megjelent, és csak most vált elérhetővé vinyl és digitális formátumban.  

A Fodderbasisnél kijött új Szemző lemezről meg nehéz volna bármi újat mondani, mert az ARBO X (Csoma Grooves) pont olyan, mint egy Szemző lemez: szelíd, mély, harmonikus, meditatív és szakrális nyelven megszólaló, jó nagy terekkel és csendekkel. Azon gondolkoztam, hogy 100 megkérdezett random magyarból hányan ismerhetik Szemző Tibor nevét? Meg hogy az első 180-as Csoport lemez 1983-as, és az nagyon rég volt.

1. How many books did you read this year? 200! That counts adult novels, junior novels, comics, reference books, even a handful of picture books.

2. Did you reread anything? What? A couple of random things: The Sailor V manga volume one and two, Star Wars: Cobalt Squadron, and Magic Attic Club: The Secret of the Attic

3. What were your top five books of the year? Going by my Goodreads ratings: It’s Not What It Looks Like by Molly Burke, Descendants 3: Audrey’s Diary, Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy by Amy Ratcliffe, Revenge of the Sith novelization by Matthew Stover, and Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing.

4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year? I read E.K. Johnston’s books for the first time this year, and definitely want to see more Star Wars by her. Also Rebecca Roanhorse.

8. Did you meet any of your reading goals? Which ones? Specifically, only the 200-book Goodreads goal. I think I meant, once again, to reach NJO, but still not there.

9. Did you get into any new genres? Literally just over the last couple of days, I’ve started reading stuff with aspec characters, which I’m enjoying a lot.

10. What was your favorite new release of the year? Without looking back at all the contendors, it has to be Resistance Reborn. There was just so much in that book that felt like payoff for being a huge long-term Star Wars fan, and it was good.

12. Any books that disappointed you? The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent by Larry Correia is definitely number one in this regard. Blurb read like a funny scifi romp, actually turned out to be conservative propaganda.

17. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year? Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. The representation was as great as I was promised, but I have Issues with the actual plot and themes.

20. Did you use your library? I did! Mostly I got a bunch of use out of the app I can’t remember right now that you can rent audiobooks through.

24. What’s the fastest time it took you to read a book? Since I read a good amount of short things, there were a bunch I finished in a day or two.

25. Did you DNF anything? Why? A Writer's Space: Make Room to Dream, to Work, to Write by Eril Maisel; The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo; and  Figure It Out!: The Beginner's Guide to Drawing People by Christopher Hart, mostly just because these kinds of self-help type books don’t tend to keep my attention. They’re all on a list of things I intend to go back to at some point, though.
