Rhaenyra and Feminism

I find it so funny how TG stans go on and on about how Rhaenyra wasn't a "feminist", when they're supporting team male progeniture. Like sure, Rhaenyra wasn't out there reading/writing feminist literature and manifestos against the patriarchy, but who was? Definitely not their beloved Alicent, their rapist king, or their misogynistic kinslayer/war criminal.

Let's do a quick history lesson, shall we? Queen Elizabeth I, the second ruling queen of England and one of the greatest rulers of that country. One of her most famous acts was the execution of Mary Queen of Scots. Does that make her an evil person who is a sign that her father and the other supporters of the patriarchy were right, that a woman isn't fit to rule? Now, we also have no records of Elizabeth interfering with the succession choices of her lords or making laws that women should be treated equal to men. Does this mean her reign was meaningless or even harmful to the feminist movement?

The answer to both these questions is fuck no. Elizabeth simply ruling was a huge step for the feminist movement. She showed that a woman could rule just as well if not better than a man.

Now a greenie could argue that Rhaenyra wasn't a good ruler, to which I answer, she never had a chance to properly rule. Had Rhaenyra ascended undisputed there would have been no need for any of her unpopular decisions (i.e. the heavy tax, Nettles' execution, etc.) Her reign would have set a precedent that a female heir is acceptable and the change would ripple out from there, much like it did with early female rulers in the real world.

As for why Rhaenyra didn't support Baela and Rhaena, that wasn't her decision, it was Corlys'. Corlys had decided that Driftmark would pass through Laenor's line not Laena's and he rejects any of Rhaenys' suggestions to the contrary in the show. Lucerys had been accepted by Laenor, Corlys, and Viserys as Laenor's legitimate heir, so that's the end of it. Corlys even had the chance to name Baela or Rhaena heir after Luke's death, but instead he chose Addam and later Alyn, two bastards who were, supposedly, of Laenor's line. Now, am I saying that I agree with Corly? No, in fact I really don't like him, but who his successor would be is his decision.

For Rhaenyra to step in and force him to change his mind would not only destroy what's left of any goodwill between the Targaryens and Velaryons (which her father put the responsibility of on her by forcing her to marry Laenor) but also would make the lords of Westeros a reason to revolt. Aegon I allowed the lords to exercise almost the same amount of power they did before the Conquest, part of that is the choice over who would succeed them. As for Luke being heir, Rhaenyra never forced Corlys to acknowledge him and affirm him as heir, that was, once again, his choice. He could have chosen to speak out against her and declare the boys bastards, with the support of Rhaenys, which would force Viserys to either remove Rhaenyra as heir or at least remove Luke from the line of succession. Or a much easier move would have been to remove Laenor as heir to Driftmark and give the position to Laena, yet Corly never did either of these things.

Yeah, Rhaenyra chose to embrace the opportunity this gave her, why wouldn't she? That's a political move that strengthens her claim in the face of the Greens' constant undermining and plotting. Literally every ruler in Westeros does shit like that, that's how the world works, if you want to rule, you need to play political games of some kind.

And before any of the greenies try to bring up the time when some lords brought a question of succession before Rhaenyra during the Dance, let me cover that real quick. Rhaenyra was in the middle of a war and knew full well that most of the lords would be willing to turn on her quickly, something she couldn't afford. So yes, she chose to support the male heirs over the lords' daughters, because she knew that was what the lords wanted and she needed their support. Again, had she not been at war, she wouldn't have had to make this choice and we can't know what she would have done.

Now, to conclude this rant: Rhaenyra wasn't a modern or suffrage era feminist, but that doesn't make her an anti-feminist tyrant. She would have been the beginning of a shift in the misogynistic ideals set so steadfastly in Westeros as her reign would set a precedent for future ruling queens. How could she have our ideals of feminism when the roots of them had barely begun to develop? That's an impossible expectation to put on her and the most hypocritical argument anyone could have. TG usurped Rhaenyra because they wanted to further uphold the patriarchy and none of them cared about the women of the realm or even the people. Maybe you should look at your precious team before you try to defame the rightful queen.

Who Is Tekken?

I made a tier ranking because I was bored and because this is TEKKEN 8'S RELEASE WEEK!!!

So, basically this is a tier list based on who I think represents the series best. Not personal preference, just who I think of when I think of Tekken, and which characters I think usually act as the "face" of the franchise.

Tekken God Tier a.k.a. The one true "Face" of Tekken

Paul Phoenix - Although the story is centered around the Mishima Family feud, Paul I think best represents the spirit of Tekken as a whole. His design is outrageous, he can be considered goofy, not only because of the hair but because of his most recent portrayal and rivalry with Kuma, but he is nevertheless not treated entirely as a joke character. He is always there and he is a veteran.

Tekken Kings Tier a.k.a Characters present in all games that are also synonymous with Tekken

Yoshimitsu - Yoshimitsu is another character that is always present and, like Paul, he represents Tekken's spirit. He always looks ridiculous and he is completely redesigned in each new installment.

King - King also fits the same mentality as the other two. The jaguar mask, and the fact that when he speaks jaguar growls come out make him a staple to the "ridiculous but not a joke character" archetype that Tekken essentially jumpstarted and has polished to perfection over the years. Many other fighting games have joke characters of course, but some of Tekken's joke characters are actually pretty viable options.

Tekken Overlords Tier a.k.a. Characters who are present in almost all games and also represent the brand in promotional events and such

Nina Williams - Nina is undisputedly the Queen of Tekken. She is the only female fighter to appear in all Tekken games, she has her own spinoff game and she is almost always featured in collaborations and promotional events. She is the Chun-Li of Tekken with Cammy's demeanour. A two-in-one type of deal if you will.

Kazuya Mishima - Kazuya was the protagonist of the original Tekken game and has ever since taken on the role of either the primary or secondary antagonist. If Nina is Tekken's Chun-Li, then Kazuya is Tekken's Ryu, but with a twist. Kazuya is no hero, he is not the golden shoto honest boy who wants to save the world. Quite the opposite. Tekken can be campy but it can also be extremely edgy. Kazuya perfectly represents this inherent need to be edgy. When other fighting games attempted to replicate Street Fighter's Ryu by making more stoic stereotypical Japanese heroes who don't say much and only want to become stronger, Tekken introduced a villainous type of protagonist that will stop at nothing to achieve ultimate power. Tekken doesn't have a Ryu, only an Evil Ryu.

Ling Xiaoyu - Many would argue that Xiaoyu is Tekken's Chun-Li, and in the sense of having an upbeat female Chinese martial artist she is, but she is more like Chun-Li's little sister, or Tekken's little sister in this case. Nina is mature and sexy while Xiaoyu is cheerful and cute, childish even, in her debut appearance. Depending on who you ask she may be the main female character of Tekken but I'll say she's the second best thing. Still extremely important for the franchise.

Hwoarang - Hwoarang has never missed a game since his debut and I don't think he will in the future either. He is a very integral part of Tekken and his high kicks in the tightest of jeans definitely add a little more unhingedeness to the series.

Marshall Law - Every fighting game that respects itself pays homage to the greatest martial artist that ever lived. Law has every Bruce Lee mannerism that you can imagine and then some!

Tekken Warrior Tier a.k.a Jack

Although Jack's appearance and moveset are not necessarily remarkable, the fact that he undergoes a name change with each new Tekken entry, to match the mainline game's numbering, is kinda iconic in its own right and tied to Tekken itself. Even though he skipped Tekken 4 (and the JACK unit in the original game is a generic one not related to Jane's JACK who is present in all the following games) there is still a JACK-4 line, which further goes to show that you can't have Tekken without the JACKs.

Tekken Fighters Tier a.k.a. fairly recognisable characters who appear in most games

Lei Wulong - Tekken not only has its own Bruce Lee, but it also has its own Jackie Chan*! Lei has one of the most complicated movesets in fighting game history and as fighting game development gets pricier and pricier, he puts an actual strain on Namco's developments costs. While I don't think he will completely miss Tekken 8 or any following Tekkens, he is most likely gonna be permanent DLC to accommodate for the resources and money needed for his animations lmao

*since he is still alive though they actually started making his face more distinct as time went on and graphics became more realistic, possibly to avoid a lawsuit lol

Jin Kazama - Jin has essentially been the protagonist of Tekken since Tekken 3 (with a minor stint as a villain in 6 and, technically, being in a coma throughout Tekken 7's entire story) He is once again positioned as the "hero" in Tekken 8, although, like I said with Kazuya, Tekken doesn't do heroes the traditional way.

Bryan Fury - Bryan is the resident kickboxer of Tekken and he hasn't missed a game since his debut. His psychotic laugh is a Tekken trademark and his unhinged personality is a perfect match for a series like Tekken.

Steve Fox - Likewise, Steve is the resident boxer of Tekken. Arguably, he's not as strong in the personality department, so his fighting style kind of hard carries him and is also probably why he hasn't skipped an entry since his inception.

Asuka Kazama - Asuka is kind of the "new generation" type of Tekken girl. She had a really strong debut in Tekken 5, I think she really served in that game, but ever since the rivalry with Lili subplot was introduced I feel like Lili's personality overpowers hers. Nevertheless, they have been positioned by Namco as the new main female Tekken rivalry ever since Tekken 6 so that's that.

Tekken Brawlers Tier a.k.a. the last three core Tekken characters

Heihachi Mishima - Heihachi is arguably the Akuma of Tekken. He often assumes the final boss role and has been in all Tekken games until his death (?). Tekken 7 was teased as the big finale to Kazuya and Heihachi's rivalry, and his death (??) truly meant the end of an era for the series.

Feng Wei - I struggled a lot with this one because he's a character I personally don't care at all about, but personal bias aside I think his moveset is quintessential Tekken, and like Asuka he also had a very strong Tekken 5 debut that kind of hard carries him ever since. His scenes in the Tekken 5 opening cinematic are pretty memorable.

Lili - If the Tekken universe has an it girl it is her. Lili has been a consistently popular character since her debut and I don't think it's hard to see why. Her personality is hilarious, the rich mean daddy's girl type, her moveset is hella fun and her design is pretty slick and gets the message across - you know she is the spoiled brat before she even opens her mouth.

Tekken Grand Masters Tier a.k.a. characters who are still pretty important but can skip a game or two

Lee Chaolan - Lee's trademark "excellent" is definitely pretty standard amongst Tekken fans, but from here on, him and the characters that follow are more or less characters who are mostly relevant within the Tekken community and don't necessarily represent the franchise as a whole or are instantly recognisable as Tekken characters. Lee's is a very interesting take on Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. In Tekken 1, all of the "rival" characters are in some way reused or alternate versions of the initial eight characters' fighting styles. In this case, he practices Jeet Kune Do like Law, but unlike Law, he doesn't retain any of Bruce Lee's mannerisms, other than the outrageous screams.

Eddy Gordo - Eddy is the resident capoeira master of Tekken, and you could argue this alone could earn him a higher placing, but I feel like the fact that he was Christie's pallette swap for two games split the spotlight between them. He still has a story-related reason to fight and is therefore still coming back whereas Christie's story arc is done for now, but even still, he was missing from the initial arcade release of Tekken 7 and is now only coming back as DLC. Eddy is undoubtedly a trademark Tekken character, but I feel like all the characters above him have become a tad more essential than him over the years.

Sergei Dragunov - Dragunov certainly has his fans, and has a fun moveset and an interesting... gimmick, if you can even call it that, in that he chooses not to speak. Ever... Almost.

Jun Kazama - No other character has had such a strong impact in the Tekken fanbase as Jun. Despite only being canonically present in one game (and it will 100% remain so as she is definitely still dead in Tekken 8) she has been constantly requested by fans, has had a "clone" character in the form of Asuka, and even an "evil counterpart" in the form of Unknown. Jun is kind of the face of the Tekken Tag Tournament games, as both of them, and any future ones we hopefully get, were always fans' chance to get to see her again after her death. Even after Asuka's debut, Jun's comeback in Tag 2 was among the main marketing for the game.

Christie Monteiro - Like I said, Christie replaced Eddy in Tekken 4 and 5 as the "face" of capoeira for Tekken. Although Eddy was the OG, and I feel like his Tekken 3 and Tag 1 appearances are his main popularity and nostalgia boosts over hers, Christie is arguably the more fun of the two and although her story arc is over, she has more to give in the personality department. With Tekken 8 going the extra mile to make Kuma and Panda feel more unique, decades after their debut as identical characters, I think the same energy can be applied to Eddy and Christie. They already had different standing throws to begin with so a first step was taken ever since Tekken 4.

Craig Marduk - Marduk is the series' resident big burly screaming neanderthal type of character. He has had a bit of character development through his feud and eventual friendship with King and, even when it seemed like Gigas had kind of replaced him in Tekken 7 he actually made it back so good for him, I guess...

Leo Kliesen - Leo kind of invented being non-binary back in 2008 right? What was initially envisioned as a gimmick, a character without gender, has taken on a whole new meaning as people found new ways to express their identities that weren't as widely explored before and I think that this is a good thing. No one in the Tekken world seems to treat Leo's androgyny as something abnormal, in fact nobody even acknowledges it, nobody is bothered by it, nobody loses sleep about it. Leo is Leo and they're here to stay. My only issue is that Leo's personality trait sliders were all set right in the middle too and this is definitely something that could be worked on a lot more.

Lars Alexandersson - Tekken 6 tried really hard to set Lars up as "the new Mishima" and I don't think it worked. I mean look at Reina's reception. I think that's what they were going for at the time. Did it work? Yes and no. Lars is intrinsically tied with the story and he seems to have been positioned as a positive role model and moral compass for Jin to make him "find his way" or whatever the fuck. If you think about it, after Jun's death, Jin only had Heihachi's abusive relationship and murder attempt and then his equally bloody reunion with his father in the form of family. Lars, and I guess Lee (they don't seem to have canonically interacted with each other before Tekken 7's ending) are now positioned as the good influences in Jin's life. Although Lee has worked under both Heihachi and Kazuya, and Lars had no issues working as a mercenary for Heihachi in the Tekken Force and only quit after Jin started World War III. Once again this harkens back to how no one is a saint in Tekken. Lars is no exception.

Raven - He took a small break in 7 but his fighting style was still represented in the form of his master. Raven's design is a knock-off Blade but the fact that he is a ninja working for the United Nations and that they also keep expanding his organization with new members in the form of Master Raven and Victor is proof enough of his relevancy to the series.

Tekken Experts Tier a.k.a. the last few ones that actually matter

Kuma - Kuma is a joke character, but an arguably quite good one at that. Tekken employs many "jokey" characters, the Pauls, the Yoshimitsus, the Kings, as marketing gimmicks. "Oh you know Tekken has a guy with weird hair that punches real hard" or "Tekken has a mech space ninja" or "Tekken has a dude with a jaguar head" but nothing hits quite hard like "Tekken has a bear". Street Fighter II had many martial artists in its original eight-character roster. A stoic karateka, a cheerful Kung Fu master, a hardened wrestler. But it also had Blanka, a weird "out of the box" type of character that fights with an unconventional fighting style and has a unique appearance. The other characters I mentioned have unique appearances but Paul practices judo, King is a wrestler and Yoshimitsu is a ninja (so at least his shenanigans are somewhat excused). But Kuma is a talking bear (when he speaks we hear growls, just like with King, but he is canonically able to communicate with humans, he just follows Tekken's "everyone speaks their mother tongue" and therefore speaks 'bear') who practices a mix of Mishima-style karate along with... Well bear moves. Very few other games in the market can match that energy.

Anna Williams - Anna is unfortunately, more often than not, in the shadow of her older sister, a sentiment that perhaps hits too close to home for a lot of younger siblings. Nevertheless, even if she began as a Nina clone, she was among the very first who the developers started differentiating from their original counterpart, as early as Tekken 3. Anna is certainly popular, but she is constantly treated as an afterthought to Nina, which itself prevents me from placing her any higher. While Nina is allowed to be part of the main story and have a subplot with her son or others, Anna has only ever had her rivalry with Nina, her having the hots for Kazuya and an interaction with Lee that may not even be canon. Perhaps the fact that she constantly has to live in the shadow of a more popular sister is in and of itself her own gimmick within the Tekken universe. The fact that she always serves the cunt™, all the cunt™ and nothing but the cunt™ is also probably a reason why she is a favourite of the gays and the girls.

Ganryu - Ganryu is another joke character. He has many running gage, actually, from his obsession with Michelle Chang and then her much-younger-than-him (...) daughter and them barely even acknowledging his existence, his lying over his ranking in sumo (and being cancelled by the... Sumo masters??? because of it) and also trying and failing to promote his chanko restaurant through the Tournaments, Ganryu is perhaps the Joke Character of Tekken. Even so, Kazuya apparently found something in him as he was among his elite bodyguards along with Bruce, Anna and Lee in Tekken 2.

Julia Chang - Julia I feel like also peaked during her Tekken 5 era but has been slowly fading in the background ever since. Arguably the most interesting character development she's had was adopting the Jaycee luchadora persona... Which was not canon... Her new streamer persona doesn't seem to be necessarily popular and the fact that she's again missing from another mainline base Tekken game may reflect that Namco don't necessarily seem like they know what to do with her at all.

Devil Jin - Devil Jin is not really an actual character, rather an alter ego of sorts of Jin, although we haven't necessarily "seen" him so far. Whenever Jin canonically assumes his devil form he just seems to lose control for a few seconds and then snaps back to normal. The reason for his existence is that people were pissed that Jin's Tekken 3 moveset was dropped in Tekken 4 as Jin relearned his fighting style to distance himself from his Mishima heritage and go back to his mother's teachings and Namco simply decided to bring it back in the form of an alter ego. He simply exists as a gameplay mechanic, although it still has endured for all these years, showing the impact Tekken 3 still has on the series. The initial story trailers for Tekken 8 seemed to hint that Devil Jin was no more but, for better or worse, Namco doesn't seem to be ready to let go just yet.

Baek Doo San & Michelle Chang - Both have been completely replaced by Hwoarang and Julia respectively so both are mostly in this tier for their presence in the first few games and the fact that their fighting style lives on through their disciples. Arguably Baek's is a little more alive than Michelle's though lol

Alisa Bosconovitch - Alisa is another one of the teen girly characters that Namco loves to push as their main form of female character archetype. Alisa being an android with chainsaw blades coming out of her arms was certainly an interesting gimmick back when she was added to Tekken 6, but it doesn't have an impact nearly as strong as "man with jaguar head" or "talking bear".

Zafina - Zafina closes up the last tier of actually important characters for the game's identity. She is cunty and as assassin but also her fighting style is extremely cooky and her animations are hilarious and, on top of that, she now also has the rotting Azazel hand. A perfect mix of the three pillars of Tekken; edginess, camp and c*nt~

Tekken Mentors Tier a.k.a. Pallette swaps, the last few legacy characters and Mokujin

Tekken Initiates Tier a.k.a Bosses, one-off characters and the literal newcomers who cannot be properly placed yet. I consider Leroy a newcomer since he didn't get a story chapter last time and since he's the only T7 DLC to make it in T8 thus far he gets a small bonus boost

Tekken Beginners Tier a.k.a. even more palette swaps, characters completely replaced by others or obscure randos that only come back for the Tag Tournaments. The rest of T7's characters that did not make the cut (so far) are here either because they didn't have as strong an impact as the rest or they were DLC and haven't shown their full potential yet

Book of the Week: Born to Be Rebellious

Author: Sang Wo (桑沃)

Genre: world-hopping, danmei

Rating: T

My Synopsis: If you’re hungering for a book where the main character is so OP that he becomes god (as a little treat), then this may be the book for you! Meet Ge Xiu, the amnesiac main character who is immune to pesky mortal inconveniences like “hopelessness,” “powerlessness,” and “suffering,” and his multi-named love interest, the man who’ll be damned before he lets Ge Xiu experience any of those things, anyways! Join them while they world hop through different torture universes such as garbage planet, abo-verse, and the movie industry as Ge Xiu makes it his life goal to frustrate as many evil scientists to death as he can!

My Actual Review: I loved this book to bits, every arc, even the ones that I would have otherwise avoided in other books. I think its greatest strength is that the author calls forth extremely popular genres and tropes (cat-boy universe? ABO UNIVERSE???) only to simply blow through them without deigning to play the setting straight. Ge Xiu, as a character, has no respect for others or care of their expectations of him, and the way the story is written plays into that so well. I also found the reveal at the end about who the LI is and why he appears in every world to fit in perfectly with everything else, but damn did that man hurt me to get there 😭 One small thing is that this author obviously had a thing for Europeans and European settings that I, personally, was not a fan of, but that’s neither here nor there. This is a relatively light read, though it covers topics such as human experimentation and child abuse and, though the story is vague about Ge Xiu’s age, he is in fact an adult (or as adult as any person who has had their aging scientifically sped up could be, I guess), so no underage stuff.

If I Am Ever A Reincarnated Girl In An Isekai ...

If the male lead killed me in the first timeline, I will NOT date him in the second timeline. Even if he had understandable reasons for his actions, it was still a traumatic experience.

If the male lead was a dickhead in the first timeline, I will NOT date him in the second timeline. While the butterfly effect may have changed his attitude toward me, he's probably still going to be a dickhead to other people.

If the male lead is related to me or was raised as if he were, I will at least consider the available dating options outside my family before re-enacting the Ptolemaic dynasty's greatest hits.

I will carefully investigate whether other characters in this world are sapient like me, or merely cheap stereotypes. If I find the former, I will treat them with respect.

If any other characters are also reincarnated from twenty first century Earth, I will talk to them at the earliest possible opportunity. We share a unique experience in common and we will resolve any conflicts better if we talk first rather than faff around with our fingers up our bums.

I will NOT support the slave trade under any circumstances. If the narrative forces me to own slaves, I will set them free as soon as possible and join or create a local abolitionist society.

I will reject the sexist stereotype that there must be one good girl and one bad girl at all times. If the narrative has twisted the former female lead into a one dimensional villain, I will first investigate whether I can challenge this shallow narrative before I act to defeat her. However, since gender equality is a good thing, women will be treated equally to men when they act badly.

If I decide to execute a revenge plot and destroy all who have harmed me, quick deaths and secure legal imprisonments will be key features of my plan. I will not let an enemy hang around and continue to have the capacity to harm me just because I'm working up a really fun complicated scheme.

I will import science, technology, economics, law, food and culture from twenty-first-century Earth only to the extent I have actual expertise in the relevant areas and where it's reasonable to believe these innovations will help and not harm the locals. Where I have knowledge gaps, I will learn from local experts and use the scientific method.

If I find myself part of a Love Triangle or other n-dimensional shape, I will speak up about my affections as soon as I am certain of them myself. If I am then romantically rejected, I will accept it gracefully and look for a different fish in the sea.

I will not cheat on my lover or encourage them to cheat with me. If I fancy someone who's already in a relationship, I will leave them alone unless it's a consensual polyamorous thing or after they break up.

If I refuse to believe things that are blatantly obvious to the reader, such as my utter oblivion to a harem forming around me, I will not allow the narrative to describe me as a keen observer.

If I happen to be reincarnated as an overweight person, I will do sufficient exercise to be healthy and snarf up salads to the extent that I want to, but I will not torment myself into an obsessive dietary regime. If the only acceptable me is thin, it's time to challenge some narrow minded beauty standards.

transphobia specifically directed at trans men and transmasculine people is not transmisandry. it's not transandrophobia. there is specific oppression that trans men face, but it's not because we're men or masculine, as those two words imply. it's just fucking misogyny. "young girls are being brainwashed/groomed into being trans" = misogyny. "trans men with mental illnesses can't really know if they're trans or not" = assumes people they see as girls can't make their own decisions = infantilization of women = misogyny. "transmascs over-masculinize themselves to fit in" = demonizes gender transgression of anyone assigned female at birth = misogyny. "what if they decide to detransition and can't have children?/testosterone can cause infertility/testosterone can cause irreversible changes" = sees people with uteruses as vessels for babies and the patriarchy = misogyny.

internet trans discourse is stupid and i just want to shake people by the shoulders and scream that both sides of the "transandrophobia" debate are so fucking reductive. all of the above rhetoric is alive and well and the cause of a shit ton of anti-trans legislation, sentiment, and violence both nationally (US) and internationally, and i'm tired of people who aren't transmasculine acting like trans men automatically have male privilege just because we identify as men now. it doesn't change how cis ppl see us, and even if a guy has been on hormones for awhile, he's still affected by reproductive laws (hmm...correlation in US legislation/rights anyone?), as one example. this of course doesn't mean trans men can't have male privilege, but it's not the universal sticker of "this person is a man and therefore doesn't face x" that cis men have.

personally i am not a fan of the way "transmisogyny" is used as a specifier, because from what i've seen, the oppression that trans women and men (and nonbinary people, especially those who do hormones or surgeries), though different, all stems from misogyny. transphobia itself stems from misogyny. i don't like how "transmisogyny"--and especially its derivatives, tme/tma--imply that trans men somehow face less oppression than trans women. we are all one group and the insistence on dividing us into this ridiculous binary, one that is supposedly, to internet queers, the greatest divide when it comes to types of transphobia, erases factors like race and disability that i think have much more of a sway on how likely it is that a trans person will be a target. you think a black trans man transitioning now means he'll somehow be safer than a white trans woman? really????

before y'all turn this into the pancake waffle thing, i'm not saying the word transmisogyny is bad or that we shouldn't talk about the intersectionality of being trans and a woman. but the way the trans community, and by extension, the cis queer community, talks about it as if trans women are the only ones that are women, seen as women, feel connected to womanhood, adjacent to womanhood, and face all the misogyny related to those things is frankly one of the stupidest progressions of queer theory i've ever seen. intersectionality of gender identity, transness, and sexuality is so complicated, fluid, and personal in a way that a gender/sexuality intersection with race, disability, or class is not. while there are threads of connection between all of these things, the two "types" of gendered oppression, misogyny and transphobia, are so closely tied together and smushed together within the meaning of gender that efforts to put clear-cut terms and frameworks of intersectionality within that little shaken-up cocktail is going to be fruitless.

and y'alls insistence on doing so, trying to dumb everything down into rules that don't always apply and definitely don't match up with the way the actual world treats trans people, drives me fucking crazy.

Megamind and the Devil of the Metro City AU Chapter 1 - "New life, new city and new family "

" Metro City ", this great and prosperous city is the best place to live and New York kind of disagrees but is fine, sharing its first place with Metro City.

But it's hard because I'm leaving Hell's Kitchen the only home I've ever known and never left, where my father raised me, but Hell's Kitchen was also the reason because his horrors, crimes and corruptions took his life, but Murdocks never give up and Matt still considers Hell's Kitchen, but is now willing. have a second and he would have a family and carry his father in his heart and build the future that his father dreamed of for them and...

"Mattthew"!!! are you well? A professional and calm but gentle voice asked to the boy with slightly messy and straight reddish brown hair, wearing a white striped shirt, thin body and around 10 years old, but he also had sunglasses despite the sun being setting and the darkness of the night already beginning but to take them off when he takes off his glasses they reveal whitened and pale brown eyes because he is blind and he has his red cane with Devil details and also law school stickers, court/justice scales and things related to Boxing in honor of his father.

"That was him Matthew Michael Murdock/Matt Murdock and now it was Matthew Michael Harley Murdock/Matt Harley Murdock, he is the son of Jack Battlin' Murdock, the best, greatest and most famous local boxer from Hell's Kitchen who died after refusing to play the Fixer/Roscoe game which was to lose the fight but Jack who was encouraged by his son, Murdocks never give up!!! and his pride that she screamed loudly that's what led to her end because Fixer and his men killed Jack by shooting him and Matt felt him here and he was there even though he couldn't see he felt it.

Matt was originally supposed to go to Saint Agnes and be under the care of Sister Maggie and then be adopted and have the right to the fight money that Jack left him but James Harley, the Warden of the Metro City Prison for the Criminally Gifted, who was a close friend Jack decided to adopt the boy and raise him as his own and in these 2 weeks of adoption process, Matt became attached to James and began to consider him his second father because James treated him like a normal person and helped him with Braille and homework. and then once he was adopted, Matt hugged him tightly and then leaving New York- Hell's Kitchen and now Metro City, His adoptive father told him that he now has a brother and uncles.

Matt was super happy but what made him curious was that his adoptive father said that his brother was special and was something out of the ordinary that he had ever seen in his entire life.

Blue???? Matt said confused.

He's your new little brother and we call him " Blue". James says smiling and placing his hand on his son's head.

Matt smiled and was looking forward to meeting the rest of his new family and then as they were passing through Metro City in James' car, Matt's advanced senses picked up the smell, shape, material and extent of a mountain but not just any mountain because it was surrounded by magna and lava, it was rocky and its world flames (as Matt describes it) his senses formed a shape that resembled a red Devil that was chilling and fearful.

Metro City called this mountain "Devil's Keep".

And Matt found it incredible because unlike everyone else, Matt saw this Devil as him because the Devil in the Murdock boys was part of them and the Devil was like him misunderstood by society and being himself and Matt was a good Devil who wanted justice and would help others and it would make a difference for Hell's Kitchen and also now Metro City because he would be the best lawyer of all time and have his new family supporting him

Matt we are coming!!! James spoke calmly as he approached the prison which would be Matt's new home and is where he would meet the rest of his new family.

Minion, give me the wrench!! said loudly dramatically a blue boy about 8 years old and he was dressed in the orange prison jumpsuit and this boy was smart and his mind was huge (literally).

This was "Blue Harley" the adopted son of James Harley who is also the Warden and he is the adopted nephew of his prison uncles and prison guards and now he was finishing his newest invention with the help of "Minion" his fish/brother/caretaker/best friend/ henchman and right arm.

Of course sir!!! Minion says in his usual happy tone while passing wrench.

Wonderful now as soon as I finish this teleportation machine I will revolutionize the world of science, get all my Uncles out of here and rule the business world and become super rich!!!! Muuuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

Megamind's laugh sounds like evil laughter and a dramatic lightning tone begins, scary silence and dramatic music and Minion joins in and they laugh louder

Blue!!! James' voice echoes up the cell as he opens the door

The blue alien screams like a scared lady because he was caught by surprise

kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk! Matt laughs because this is funny

This gets Blue's attention

Father... I mean Warden, you... you're back early Naw Yurqui!!! Who is this guy in sunglasses, Metrocity is taking tiny prisoners now???the young blue alien says in total confusion trying to speak human words correctly and understand this situation

First Son, it's Metro City and New York and secondly this boy who is with me I adopted because his father died and he has no one left and now he is part of the family and he is his older brother now!!!

Older brother? Blue sank into her thoughts and soon perked up.

Hello…. little brother! Matt says excited but nervous because he wants to make a good first impression and that Blue doesn't feel uncomfortable because he's blind.

Blue was nervous because it would be good to have a brother as he never had one, except for Minion but this boy with sunglasses was like him not in appearance because Blue felt his pain and how it wasn't like having a family rather than him being adopted. by Warden/Father and his uncles

Matt meet Blue and Blue meet Matt!!! James said introducing the 2 boys to each other

Now that you two know each other, I think I'll leave you alone in Blue's cell so you two can have some big brother/little brother time and get to know each other better. James leaves kissing his 2 sons on the forehead and he leaves Blue's cell and tells Uncle Willy, the guard in one of the cells to keep an eye on the boys and take Matt to his room when he leaves.

Now that the two of them are alone Blue breaks the silence.

So Matt, since you are his brother, how about we have a chat about brotherhood and family ties, vowing to care for each other and protect them in any situation? Blue says excited because having an older brother was new and now they were a family.

Matt smiles and with his senses he sees his brother's smile that according to the burning world that is mirrored to him he was an 8 year old boy his physical material glowed blue which made Matt identify him having his skin and mass blue and his heart and organisms and sounds he could hear from another world

Why do you wear those glasses Matt? Blue was curious

Well because I'm blind!!! Matt says calmly as he takes off his glasses.

Blue was surprised because he had never seen anyone blind before and also because Matt was being completely honest with him.

And one thing, little brother, promise not to tell anyone because it's the secret that no one knows!!! Matt says

Blue looks at Minion.

He may know too because he is part of the team and the family? Blue asks

Ok!! Matt simply said

……..so 13 minutes of explanation and sad story later

You whateeeeeeeeee!?!!!!!!!! Minion and Blue screamed

Yes friend, I've had this since my accident! Matt says nervously

That's amazing and that means you're weird like me and it makes us weird brothers who looked out for each other!!!! Blue says jumping for joy Matt is moved because everyone his whole life teased him for being different and this bullying only got worse when he went blind but his father was there and his adoptive father was there too and they told him to never let it get him down because his fight. It's not over and he can always get up and never give up even if he falls thousands of times and now he had someone to share this Matt is hugged by Blue who was holding Minion so he could also be part of the hug.

Matt! I'm glad you're here because I always wanted a brother and now we have you and you're part of the family and no matter what happens we will always stay together. Your little brother says smiling during the hug and Matt felt liquids in his eyes and it was tears because he was emotional.

Blue who is there??????? a voice echoed from upstairs interrupting Megamind's speech and Roxanne swore she heard noises from what sounded like a cane.

Then, going down the stairs, a young man with short brown hair, a trimmed beard, a serious but lively and playful tone is revealed, wearing a gray suit and black tie and the most striking thing are his red glasses.

Minion smiles when she sees Matt and hugs her adopted brother and the second boy Minion swore to take care of besides Megamind/Blue

Look at you, a super handsome attorney with Metro City at your feet in the world of law!!! Minion says praising

Matt laughs

Minion don't exaggerate I'm just an intern with Foggy at Landman and Zack but soon we're going to have our own company/law office!!! Matt says optimistically.

If you need help/money or an assistant, you know you can call us! Minion says showing that he and Megamind will support his path and career whatever comes and goes.

And then I won't get a hug!!! Megamind says pretending to be angry and that he demands a hug so he is swallowed by Matt and Minion's hug.

Megamind!? I think this is cute but can you introduce me to the third horseman? Roxanne asks, leaving the three of them thinking about what to say.

Megamind pulls himself together

Megamind think about what to say without giving too much information to the reporter super beautiful in front of you (because he said it in his thoughts).

Matt who heard his heartbeat had his confirmation and Megamind tries to maintain his appearance while Minion takes the Spray to erase Roxanne as they need to be in the abandoned Lair to trick Metro man and Matt needs to get back to work

I hope you liked it and there will be more soon and I put names and explained the origins of Matt and Blue's names (which is the name given to Megamind) which came from the nicknames they used since they were little because Megamind felt he had part of his brother with him that's why this name and this castle is the secret lair and home of Matt, Foggy, Megamind and Minion, Matt all this time agreed on money to buy the land because this place is special to them and in chapter 2 you will know why

Megamind still has his observatory/Lair and uses it so Metro man can't find out where he really lives and Foggy and Matt are still working for Landman and Zack and soon they will leave/resign and start their Nelson and Murdock office which will be in building built by Megamind and Minion in the base below the castle that at the mouth of the mountain that forms a devil has a room with a large window that they use as an office and meeting room and soon there will be more and also each chapter will have a bonus from the past or of the Future according to which time in history they are

Spending part of the summer at math camp was so boring I could almost…fall…asleep…writing…about…it. Of course my sister liked it. She was a total teacher’s pet.

You like to complain but math camp wasn’t that bad. There were lots of monsters to prank, I liked some of the classes, and I was not a teacher’s pet. We were simply stuck in the middle of no-where with nothing else to do so why not learn something?

I did learn something. I learned that there are worse things than being locked out of the house in the rain. Things like listening to never ending arguments about who was the greatest monster mathematician and having every geek in the camp tell me that the chance of twins being born is 1 in 31 or 3.125%. It’s an interesting fact the first time you hear it but the novelty wears off, at a factor of 10 to the power of infinity, after every monster in camp acts like they’re the first one to give you that information.

So it wasn’t a total waste of time for you after all?

Whatever.

Every monster thinks that just because we are twins we must think and act alike every moment of the day. It’s like they think we share the same brain. I have my own personality, my own likes and dislikes, and even though we don’t have the same color of hair, monsters treat us like we’re interchangeable. I even thought about learning a dead language just so some monster could say, “Oh they’re not the same at all, the one with the dark hair speaks Manticore.”

I like the chaos that being a twin sometimes causes. I think it’s awfully awesome and who cares if other monsters get us mixed up? We know who we are and if they can’t tell the difference between us that’s their problem. Learning a dead language is fine but why choose Manticore? They’re the crankiest monsters ever.

You miss the whole point. It doesn’t matter what the language is, it’s about… nevermind.

We may not think alike but no monster knows how to push a twin sister’s buttons like her twin sister.

We went to the maul today and some thing asked us if we were werewolves! I said, “Do you live under a rock or something?” Turns out this thing did live under a rock, but that’s no excuse for making such a mistake. It happens a lot though I’m not sure why.

Me either! We have different shaped ears, our claws are retractable, we have tails, we don’t feel the need to run in packs, we have far better table manners and we are much neater in appearance. Werecats have been around far longer than werewolves too like all the way back to Ancient Egypt and India! We’re also more curious about the world around us – I mean we practically invented the Law of Claws and Effect.

Werewolves are so…common…werecats are much more rare and mysterious. We are perfectly mysterious aren’t we?

Purrrfectly.

Do you feel a draft? I sure do – oh wait it’s not a draft, it’s the wind blowing on a patch of skin that is normally covered with fur. Sister, you will say that you’re missing fur too but it’s really just a few hairs. I had to be shaved down to THE SKIN! I can’t believe you thought pranking Headless Headmistress Bloodgood by dying her nightmare white was a good idea.

It wasn’t a good idea it was a great idea – and it wasn’t the idea that was the problem it was the execution of the idea that was at issue. Sometimes a plan doesn’t always come together and how many times do I need to say, “I’m sorry?”

I’m counting the “I’m sorry’s” and I will let you know when you get to the magic number. I told you that beast was a fraidy cat and sneaking around her stall was bound to make the nightmare nervous. Oh and what did I also tell you nightmares do when they get nervous? THEY BREATHE FIRE! Fortunately for me, you were holding a bucket of permanent white dye when I got breathed on so you were able to… put everything right. Unfortunately, I ended up looking like a roasted marshmallow and a large patch of my fur had to be shaved off because that dye wouldn’t wash out. It’s a fabulous look for me…not.

Your fur will grow back in a few days and no monster will ever know unless they happen to show up to watch us clean HHB’s stables for the next week. At least she’s letting us work off the mess instead of telling mom and dad. I’m sorry. I’m really, really sorry.

Not even close to the number.

We bought Toralei’s pet sabertooth tiger, Sweet Fangs, a little present and took it over to them. Being in the pet store made us miss our pet canary. He used to sing us awake every morning – but we had to give him away because someone… was allergic. I’m not blaming her but you have to admit it’s a little odd for a werecat to have a bird allergy.

I know you blame me for having to get rid of him. It was really hard cause I loved him to you know, but just try waking up every morning with an itchy tail, watery eyes, dry nose and a hacking cough. It was really miserable.

You always blame your hacking cough on the canary but the real reason for you cough was because you didn’t take your hairball medicine like mom told you to. She’s really sensitive about it though, so I try not to bring it up.

I am not so sensitive, but if you keep talking about it one day you’re going to slip and say something about it in public and then I will be embarrassed. Lots of werecats get hairballs you know. Just because you and Toralei have never had one you both look at me like I’ve grown a second tail. Besides, we were like kittens when that happened anyway. It probably wouldn’t bother me if there were not a picture of me in the “cone of shame” which my mom thinks is cute and won’t let me throw away. I just know this is going to haunt me forever.

Totally pranked Ghoulia Yelps today… Okay maybe not totally but it would have been totally if that annoying gargoyle ghoul hadn’t interfered and completely spoiled the milk. It was purrfectly planned and so clever on our part.

We noticed – we notice everything – that little miss know-it-all has been riding her scooter down the same street at the same time every day. It’s the street that goes past library – she’s so predictable. All we did was slightly tweak a detour sign that would have pointed her down a street that was closed for repairs – it had lots of enormous pot holes filled with rain from last night’s storm.

We were watching from a rooftop with our camera and when she got to the detour sign she stopped and was completely confused; but she always follows the rules because she’s such a little do-gooder. So she was just about to turn down the street for a little “bump and wash” when this gargoyle and her pet gryphon glided down from the roof of another building – it was the library – and landing in front of Ghoulia.

We couldn’t hear what she was saying but she pointed to the sign and then pointed up to where we were hiding. We ducked of course and escaped – sort of escaped. This gargoyle, who wouldn’t tell us her name, caught up to us on the street and blocked our way – so rude. She had this horrible French accent and she said “Zat was a vary mean thing you tried to do to zat poor ghoul.” It was the perfect opportunity to practice the third “D” in Toralei’s formula for the successful prankster – Demure.

We told her that we had no idea what she was talking about but she ignored us and kept on talking – we have it all on camera. “She is vary nice and you are vary mean and I am going to tell all zee other gargoyles to watch for you now so you do not do such a thing again!” Talk about a monster with a chip on her shoulder and that gryphon of hers was ill behaved as well.

It screamed at me and I told her that if she couldn’t control her pet it should be on a leash. I should add monsters who can’t take a joke to my list of pet peeves and while I’m at it, that gryphon as well.

8.31

We were supposed to meet up with Toralei tonight for some Claws and Effect practice during the meteor shower but some monster made us late.

I said go on without me and I would catch up cause I forgot my camera and had to go back and get it. Good thing I did too cause I got some purrfect pictures of the falling stars.

Even though we didn’t get to practice Toralei’s 3 D’s we got to all hang out at the coffee shop together listen to music and watch something better than any fireworks show.

Much, much better sister.

Anon, I have no goddamn idea why you think asking me repeatedly about Gadaffi is a good choice. Broken clocks are right twice a day after all; Hitler loved dogs and was against smoking, but that doesn’t mean I’ll make arguments about why oh, you know, all the racism and genocide was somehow ok..

While bad men can love their mama or care about their family in general, it doesn’t explain, excuse or in any way give credence to their evil.

As for your other queries regarding communism; if it’s implemented by consenting individuals on a small scale AND without involving minors, it’s.. fine. Basically, “advanced roommates”. I am not a fan of it in any other context, because even if there was some method to ensure things were fair and it wasn’t yet another way for the rich & powerful to pretend to care while they reap only the benefits, there’s still the problem of privacy, personal property, and the right to not have either violated.

While an immortal and geas-enforced benevolent monarchy is not possible in the real world (and nobility in general suck), our current best option is a democratic republic mixed in with elements of socialism. Which is what we have now; but there’s far too many loopholes in the law, a weak-wristed defense of good by those on the correct side of history, and even more foes of freedom trying to destroy it utterly.

The United States is terribly flawed, with certain institutions like the police particularly broken, but the ideas behind them are solid, and it’s why even though a lot of the Founders were not the greatest people, all but the worst of them envisioned a better world. You wanna make America great? Then make it so all men.. all huMANity, are treated equally. Stop letting the rich get away with (sometimes literal!) murder. Raise up those who need hands to pull them out of the ditches of despair. And whether a deity or evolution is responsible for our existence, we must take care of our planet, as we are it’s stewards. Regardless of political, religious or other affiliations, those who destroy it are the enemies of all life, and should be regarded as such.

Also maybe fucking regulate capitalism better, because there is no reason for one person to wield influence over all civilization, nor is it right for a handful of companies to own everything..

Just aid people when able, and get others to help when you can’t! It’s not hard!

Nicknames- Mother of Kings by the people of Olympius

Age- 42 (immortal)

Location- Samos, Olympius

Personality- Rhea is a generally kind and sweet woman with a strong maternal aura. At times, she's known for not making the best informed decisions. She's also incredibly anxious, remorseful, and insecure. Her greatest hope is to make peace with her sons, to be a part of their lives and families.

She was the former Queen of Titanius (now known as Olympius). Rhea was married to the King & Titan god of time, harvest, & fate, Kronos.

Being the Titan goddess of fertility, comfort, & motherhood, she has many abilities/powers. They Include being able to induce powerful feelings of tranquility in others, shapeshifting into/communicating with her sacred animal, the lion, and mental healing- having the power to heal mental shifts & illnesses.

Rhea is incredibly lonely. She's not in touch with most of the other Titans- including her brothers-in-law Oceanus (Titan god of the sea) and Krios (Titan god of stars & constellations), The Ourea (esteemed mountain gods), and sisters-in-law Eurybia (goddess of the sea's mastery), and Tethys (Titaness of freshwater & clouds).

She doesn't have much of a relationship with her sons Zeus (god of the sky, thunder, & lightning) and Hades (god of the dead), not by choice. Things have been quite friendly with her other son Poseidon (god of the sea & earthquakes), as they meet in secret for dinner every week. She stalks her other sons' Fatestagram accounts as well as those of her many, many grandchildren. Rhea was forbidden by Zeus to have any contact with any of them, although she briefly met Hebe (goddess of youth) once accidentally while under the shapeshift disguise as an old woman when she came into contact with the young goddess at the grand opening of Iris' petting zoo. Rhea is extremely curious about her grandson Hephaestus (god of the forge), having never seen a photo of him before.

Rhea now lives a quiet life in Samos, in a large mansion (bought by Zeus as an attempt of goodwill). She also receives a weekly allowance of one million drachmas from him as well. She has several pet lions, including her favorite, a girl named Rayna. She gets around in her sleek white sports car.

She has been shown non judgemental kindness by Hestia (goddess of the hearth), who sometimes stops by her house to bring her meals. Rhea visits the main bakery nearly everyday, where she waits in the back to talk to her. She has even slept over more than a few times at Hestia's cottage. Rhea has also been in contact with Dione (mother to the goddess Aphrodite), as they've gone shopping a few times as well as Dione's younger sister Philotes (goddess of sex, friendship, & affection); who gave her a "welcome back to the world goody box", which were filled with sex toys, massage oils, and a book on tantra.

Her favorite perfume to wear is the La Petit Amour parfum Snatched Pink- the fragrance includes notes of white peach, vanilla, & clove.

Rhea loves the Olmorfia satin lipstick in the shade "Demure", a pinkish-mauve color.

Her go-to drink is a champagne spritz cocktail. She also likes white wine, martinis, red wine, mojitos, and bellinis! Her go-tos from The Roasted Bean (which she orders online) is a large pineapple-lychee splash and a cafe au lait.

Her favorite sweet treats are the vanilla cheesecake macarons from Hollyhock’s Bakery and Cocktails on Ice sparkling champagne ice cream!

Rhea’s in therapy. Once a week, she has a session with her therapist Harpocrates (god of silence & discretion).

She jokingly calls herself "a psycho magnet", referring to the attraction & former relationship with her imprisoned ex-husband. She doesn't like to think back to the time of the Titanomachy- the wars, the death, the suffering, the collapse of her marriage, Kronos' descent into madness, and him eating their sons alive.

Since she has lots of free time on her hands, Rhea has enjoyed being re-introduced to the world. Her most recent pastime has been taking snapshots of everywhere she goes (filling up the pages of photo albums). Having never cooked a day in her life (meals were always prepared by servants), she enjoys binge watching episodes of Hestia's online cooking show- jotting down the recipes in her journal. She also likes ordering deliveries of Deipneus' delicious sourdough bread! The first thing Rhea ever made successfully was the tomatokeftedes. The next recipe on her list to tackle is the stifado. Rhea is also a certified midwife!

She has met her daughter-in-law once. She thinks Hera (goddess of women & marriage) is pretty with "good hair on her shoulders." Rhea is also in love with her daughter-in-law's Luxuria brand, especially the shoes & sunglasses. She’s also a fan of Megaleio handbags, a recent purchase being the most expensive one (after saving up her allowance for a week)!

Another gift she recieved from Philotes is the lion shaped jeweled clutch from Diamond Ave., costing almost 7,000 drachmas!

On most days, Rhea finds herself humming the lullaby she used to sing to her eldest son Hades whenever they'd be in hiding from Kronos.

She absolutely hates the way she's been portrayed in The Dynasty of the Vain and Powerful, a popular soap opera that's a dramatized re-imagining of the Titanomachy. Rhea says the show makes her look like "a heartless airhead."

In her free time, she likes tending to her lions, shopping, gardening, going for long walks, writing in her journal, surfing, knitting, swimming, reading (especially magazines), yoga, sewing, and checking out the Fatestagram accounts of her sons & grandchildren.

So what's your thing with the British/London? From what I know they haven't had much power since WW2, and haven't been our enemy since the early 1800s, but obviously I'm missing something significant

oh boy. idk how into it i wanna get. but the gist of it is this:

there was an ideological difference. england was a liberal monarchy. america was a protectionist republic. the city of london (and i mean "the city of london" not the city named "london". they are distinct.) was the financial center of the world. they represent the heart of liberalism and free trade.

yes. at the time of the revolution they were still mercantilist and used protectionist policies (though they were rapidly shifting to free trade). the point is that they wanted free access to our markets while they personally benefited from protectionism. they wanted to exploit our markets and our raw material so they could reap the benefits of manufacturing and exporting finished goods to our detriment. isn't it curious? how england became the world's greatest empire through its most protectionist era? and then it lost its relevance after its embrace of free trade? but you know who didn't lose? the city of london.

anyway, i'm digressing a bit. while there were probably never any serious plans to militarily reconquer america by england (mostly because of practical considerations) they definitely wanted to undermine us as much as possible. both out of resentment and also out of fear that we may someday rival them. but while military reconquest was mostly out of the question, there was still the option for cultural and economic reconquest.

even immediately after the revolution, the british still enjoyed free access to our markets as if we were still its colony because the articles of confederation didn't give congress the ability to impose tariffs. this was a major issue when the constitution convention came up. and that's why the first major law we ever passed was a tariff. americans weren't keen on continuing to be treated like a colony.

and the hostility remained. there was bad blood between us. the war of 1812 came along because the british continued to treat us without respect. there's a reason why american's consider it our second war of independence.

and then there was the civil war. this is a big one. i can't even bother to get into all the ways in which the british were interested in the confederacy. but briefly, the british had an interest in confederate cotton. they also just had an interest in weakening america. confederates had close ties to england. many private british citizens, arms companies, and financial firms actively aided the confederacy. the confederate spy service had a headquarters in and operated from canada. jefferson davis fled to canada after the war. judah p. bejamin fled to england. my point is that there was a mutual interest between the confederates and the british. and again, the primary reason why the british didn't do anything overtly (covertly is another question...i think i have a post somewhere talking about booth and the confederate secret service somewhere) is mainly because of practical considerations.

but i do want to point out that the average englishman probably sided with the union. the war exacerbated the cotton famine in lancashire causing one of england's most prosperous industries to become impoverished. despite this, the cotton mill workers refused to work with confederate cotton as a matter of principle and supported the union's fight against slavery. but the british elite (the landed aristocracy, merchants, bankers, etc.) definitely supported the confederacy. a certain rothschild banker once said, "It is therefore for the sake of its own interests, as well as for those of humanity and civilization, that Europe ought to intervene in one manner or another... The sooner the great European states recognize the Southern Confederacy... the sooner they will have fulfilled a mission of peace and humanity. Furthermore, it is in their interest, for the independence of the South brings with it free trade and an immense market for all our products as well as England's."

and then there's the "great rapprochement" just coincidentally happening alongside the birth of "lost cause" revisionism. which also just so happens to precede america's liberalization (and, coincidentally, the uk's de-liberalization). america's affair with (neo)liberalism has its roots in the 50s. but even then it was mostly an intellectual movement. there weren't a lot of liberal policies. that began to change with carter and then solidified its hold under reagan and has been the prevailing ideology since.

now to be clear, i don't think england as a nation is solely to blame (there are plenty others that are complicit in this liberal project). or the english people in general. i want to emphasize that i am specifically referring to the city of london. but when i do blame the english/british it's meant in a sort of symbolic sense because english philosophers played such a central role in the development of liberal economics (smith, mill, malthus, ricardo, etc). so, in my mind, it is a distinctly british ideology. but also, when i refer to the city of london i'm not referring /just/ to the literal city of london. i'm using it as a metonym for (neo)liberalism and international finance in general.

When the topic of racism comes up, I often think of a billboard in the small town of Harrison, Arkansas.

It was a sign promoting a white supremacist radio station called White Pride Radio. The sign's message, emblazoned next to the picture of a cute-looking white girl with a cute-looking dog, read "It's not racist to [heart] your people."

My takeaway: Even white supremacists don't want to be called racist.

Which might explain why, for people dedicated to fighting racism, simply saying you're "not racist" doesn't feel like quite enough. To effectively defeat systemic racism — racism embedded as normal practice in institutions like education and law enforcement — you've got to be continually working towards equality for all races, striving to undo racism in your mind, your personal environment and the wider world.

In other words, you've got to be anti-racist.

You may know me as NPR's TV critic. But I've also spent years exploring how systemic racism affects media and society. I've written a book about it, called Race-Baiter, and built a TEDx talk around how to talk about race across racial lines. As a Black man who speaks often on these subjects, I find race, racism and anti-racism to be things people think they know but often don't – at least, not as well as they think they do.

As the world continues to sort through a racial and civil rights reckoning kicked off by police killings of Black people like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, now more than ever, people want to know how to be anti-racist.

After talking to a few experts, I and the good folks at Life Kit have come up with a few suggestions.

Tip #1: Accept that we've all been raised in a society that elevates white culture over others. Being anti-racist will mean first challenging those notions inside yourself.

This was one of the most important takeaways from my conversation with Anneliese A. Singh, who just joined Tulane University as its first Associate Provost for Diversity and Faculty Development. She's also written a workbook on these issues called The Racial Healing Handbook.

"Everyone who lives in the United States kind of learns some form of anti-Black racism," Singh says. "I think we have to ask ourselves that question...How does anti-Black racism live within us?"

Singh calls white supremacy "white body supremacy," a term used by therapist Resmaa Menakem, as a way to emphasize how racism has a visceral, physical impact; elevating white bodies, and bringing trauma to non-white ones.

She suggests some people may even go through a process similar to the stages of grief — especially those who have privilege because of their white or light skin – when they uncover their unconscious bias and realize how extensively systemic racism affects their perspectives.

"I'm going to be in denial if I'm white or have light skin about how white supremacy works," she says. "[We'll move] through that denial into some anger...And then when we go into acceptance, I think then we can really leverage our lives to make a difference."

Tip #2: Learn the history of racism and anti-racism, especially in America, to educate yourself about the complexities of the issues you'll be confronting.

A glance at the 2020 bestseller lists reveals lots of great books on anti-racism, from Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Antiracistto Layla Saad's Me and White Supremacy and Robin DiAngelo's White Fragility.

Most of them note that, for white folks, anti-racism involves learning to accept that white people have a racial culture, too. I've said white supremacy's greatest advantage is that white racial culture in America is often treated like it's invisible; not directly talked about among white people, some of whom joke that they have no culture.

Singh says people of color can benefit from similar study and introspection, with a particular focus on identifying and challenging any ideas that may breed colorism or contempt for other non-white groups. She calls this dynamic of elevating whiteness among non-white people, "internalized whiteness."

One important note for white people: When people of color share their experiences with white supremacy, believe them.

"I can't tell you how many people I've seen who claim to be anti-racist and care about building anti-racist organizations," Singh says. "But when people of color speak, they're like, 'Oh, well, they're doing it wrong.' Or 'That's one (person's experience).' You have an opportunity in that moment to believe what that person is saying."

Tip #3: Seek out films and TV shows which will challenge your notions of race and culture and dive in deeply, learning to see anti-racism in new ways.

So I wasn't that surprised when Justin Simien, creator of the Netflix drama Dear White People, told me viewership for his series jumped 600 percent after George Floyd's death sparked an international dialogue on anti-racism.

Dear White People centers on a group of non-white students at a mostly white, Ivy League college as they negotiate issues of identity, classism, anti-racism vs racism, homophobia and more. One poignant storyline features a young Black student, Reggie Green, who is nearly shot by a campus security guard at a party. Reggie then finds himself haunted by flashbacks of the traumatic event as well-meaning acquaintances attempt to check in on him.

Simien says the scenes with Reggie show, without lecturing the audience, how attempts to ask a Black person about racial trauma can sometimes backfire.

"The whole goal of it is for you to care so deeply about these [characters] that you don't realize you're being taught anything," he adds. "When you see that he had a gun pulled on him and he had this near-death experience, and now for the rest of the school year, everyone's coming up to him asking him, "Are you OK? Is there anything I can do?" You understand how that's not enough."

Simien suggests viewers pass up "feel good" TV shows and films showing indisputably virtuous Black people overcoming racism, often in the Jim Crow South, with help from well-meaning white people (in other words, skip screenings of The Help or Green Book.)

Well-made TV shows and films about anti-racism should be messier and much more provocative.

"You should feel challenged in some way by the piece because it's so subversive," Simien says. "[Racism is] ubiquitous and it's systemic and we can't see it...Racism lives in our collective blindspots. That's why it's so pernicious. So, there has to be a moment in the piece where you go, 'Oh! I didn't think about it like that.'"

The goal: to expose yourself to art that cuts through prejudices and stereotypes, allowing you to finally, fully see people of color.

"I had a friend put it this way," Simien says. "'We're inviting people to see us for the first time and it should break your heart that you haven't seen us yet'...That I have to interact with you through a character version of myself because I think you can't handle my daily truth. [That] should break your heart."

Tip #4: Find local organizations involved in anti-racism efforts – preferably led by people of color – and help uplift their voices and ideas.

She says learning to uplift non-white voices – even those who may disagree with you – is important for white people seeking to be anti-racist.

"Part of being an ally and part of letting go of privilege is, I think, putting yourselves in situations where you may be uncomfortable," Hatch adds. "You may have a different idea, but...you're actively working to support organizers and activists who have been thinking about these systemic problems for generations."

Also, Hatch says to be an effective anti-racist, you must assess your own power – where are the spheres where you can have the most influence?

Beyond the obvious strategy of confronting family and friends who may be racist, consider this: When you sit down at a PTA meeting at your child's school, which parents do you speak with and get to know?

At work, are you considering how procedures or strategies may advantage whiteness, and are you helping to challenge them?

Are you spending money with businesses that are owned by non-white people?

If you or a relative has a rental property, are you seriously considering applications from non-white people?

These are ways you can make a difference in your own environment, where you have power. Remember, anti-racism is about pushing past knowing better and instead actively doing better.

One thing is clear: Pulling all of this off takes a lot of energy and can feel overwhelming. And it doesn't help that one way people perpetuate systemic racism in America is by encouraging others to accept the status quo and reject many anti-racist ideas as too extreme.

But there is no better feeling than really making progress on working to build a better world. And these tips offer great ideas for starting on a long and rewarding road.

Above all, Color of Change's Hatch suggests keeping one, optimistic thing in mind.

"This is what winning looks like and feels like," she says of the current drive toward racial equity in law enforcement, politics, corporate America and elsewhere. "The moral arc of history is on our side and we are getting closer and closer every day to a culture that actually embraces the beauty and creativity of Black people in our lives."

“i will make you whatever and take you whatever if you can forgive yourself and we can get out of here.”

. It was an odd thing to have yourself chained in the dark cell with cold unfeeling ground and have your worry be instead on your warrior husband who no doubt was breaking the code and the laws of space travel to come to her side. The chocolate tressed woman was not afraid to die though avoiding it would be more appetizing for sure. Anakin would be more irrevocably broken as the senator was certain that her ribs were. The worry that boy must have felt when he had heart about the spectacle in the senate had felt almost as palpable as one of his elegant butterfly kisses. There was nothing they could do to break her even if the pieces of her body became a macabre patchwork. The republic had required so much from her that another sacrifice would not be something she struggled. Democracy looked fondly on the martyrs that had died for them. She could remember the holonets discussing her fixation on ideals when the former queen had taken her new political role. It was getting old for people to try and assassinate her though. Maybe she could get a trade federation and separatists whole punch card. The only thing that had seemingly eclipsed the sun of her people led dreams was the blue eyed boy who had made her his wife. The greatest joys in her life were not the triumphs of nations, but the crash of his lips on hers or the feeling of his mechanical hand in her hair.

There wasn’t enough give on her bonds to be able to get any leverage and any possessions that could be used as a weapon had been taken in her bouts of unconsciousness. It felt far longer than would be possible by the laws of time that she had been under the boot of the separatists. Never had she lost faith of the hopes of freedom and the defiance to seek it in the face of the greatest horrors. Yet, she could feel her spirit waning and the nerves that she would never be found attempting to cloud her in darkness. There were to many witnesses and to much information needed for her lover to pull another stunt like he had on Tatooine. Murder wasn’t the jedi way. Nor was it the way in which her sleepy lion operated. At what point did pouncing on evil with your claws out make you exactly what you were fighting? Still, it was impossible to not feel some fury and hatred to the people that would treat anyone this way. Attachment was a powerful tool that could cut different ways. Padme refused to be another wound that scarred instead of scabbing over. For it was love of her ideals and her found family that projected this fight within her. This person that borrowed from the role of Amidala that she had created for herself all those years ago. Ever the regal sincerity of a queen in the most darkest of moments, but there was some of the girl that she was beyond her regal gowns and titles. The kind of girl who was slowly finding her own armor outside of the expressions of fashion. For people would always judge the young until they created a mess for them to pick up.

There had been something happening on the ship in the last bit of time. Alarms blared where she couldn’t quite decipher them from the tomb of the room. Fervent voices dueting the blaring crone of trouble brewing. A surge of hope lifted her chest. This had to be the jedi even if the plan reeked of Anakin’s cavalier valor. She didn’t relish him seeing her even though she begged for her daydream to rip her from this nightmare. If she was an angel, her sculpted, kind hearted boy was a demigod. They had found ways to hold each other from the distance of months and days. Loving someone was a way of understanding their pain without the nerve formed stimulus. The anger she would have felt given the same circumstances could blast this darkened spaceship to heaven and back. But she needed him. Needed those blue eyes to tell her everything was okay and those arms to hold her like the world righted itself again. The woman was uncertain if she had the strength to keep her mouth off of his frowning mouth when it was reprimanded even if she would never make him choose her or the order. It would be easier for the both of them to have never known how the other tastes. And yet, she couldn’t regret what joy it had brought in her life. Like that lightsaber on his hip, she had been forged for the hands of Anakin Skywalker. Hopefully, the order would think it was merely the aggression of friendship instead of the fear of losing one’s family in one fell swoop.

The sound of bodies being flung about and the screams of men had her pushing herself to her feet to meet the threat even if the action was a bit like slipping on ice than the regal dance that usual accompanied her steps. Now, it was only the bottoms of her feet making kisses against the floor where so many others had awaited their fates. It had almost felt like he had returned completely to her recently though he had never seemed lost before. The crash of the cell door opening under the use of the force had set her heart in a jack rabbit. If it was in fact not one of her favorite troop of warriors, they could infiltrate her mind without her even being able to attempt to fight them.Relief had sagged her form when brown caught blue and the comfort of a familiar velvety voice racking through her body. This space had not become any more inviting though the blanket of safety being in his orbit had warmed the intensity of the air. She was more than a little impressed by the way he had gotten through the amount of droids and men parting her from freedom.

“Considering that I was about to kick you in the head, I think I have a right to apologize.” Padme attempted to tease though it was lacking it’s usual charm where the object of the prophecy was concerned. there would be no hiding her world weary state from jedi Skywalker as he didn’t need her aura or the force to know her tells. His words tasted like the nectar of heaven along her tongue. My love. Padme. The world was right side up again. There was a safety here. though his apology had her head shaking more quickly in disapproval. “Ani, none of this was your fault. We are at war and I am a big girl who can make my own enemies. I’ll admit. I might have preferred a little earlier to get out of another torture appointment, but having you here and now means the world to me. Just like you do, my husband. You will have the rest of our lives for you to play overprotective though I do admit I would like to crash soon or at least get a first aid kit. I don’t exactly look like a senator anymore, do I?” It had taken a few moments of shaking out her hands from the now sliced bonds to rub the sting out. Obi-wan and Rex were decent enough at keeping a thoughtless, dramatic Skywalker like plan going. The captain had quickly become like a brother to her and the master was her eldest friend. Her weakness in their orbit would be much easier to swallow and they could stop Anakin’s no doubt homicidal thoughts at the moment. they did have a great deal of timing where a rescue mission was concerned. A groan of pain had left the gates of her lips before she could stop it as his metal arm encircled her waist. It would still amazing her how a boy of such stature could simply lift her as if she weighed nothing. Not that she wasn’t aware the edit was a new brand of muscular. Thank the force that they had finished this mission. Padme Amidala had tried to tamp down her fear at trying to fight at the tow headed blonde’s side when air tasted bitter as it inflated her chest. “I- I don’t know if I can walk that far, Ani, but I can try if you think it will give us away. Thank you. For it all. For loving me. For saving me. I have no doubt the jedi will have this handled though i am not sure I want to hear about them again any time soon. The republic requires a trial, but you saw what happened to the trade federation. I just- I want to be in your arms. I was- I was terrified ,Anakin. I didn’t think I could feel that way again. Next time, we will have to plan a more pleasurable itinerary for your leave. Once that doesn’t involve politics or Obi-wan for that matter. We Skywalkers have a flair for the dramatic and impulsive almost as much as a good rescue mission.”

It was neither of my guesses. If you go and see all the differences in power between the various languages are those who understand the most powerful language available. Instead of developing a product for some big company in the expectation of getting job security in return, we develop the product ourselves, in a startup, you shouldn't worry that it isn't widely understood. I would like. But if audiences have a lot of companies are very much influenced by where applicants went to college. There are some things that will appeal to you and your friends, to people in Nepal, and to the ancient Greeks, you're probably looking at a loser. Either VCs will evolve down into this gap or, more likely, new investors will appear to fill it. Do I really want to support this company? So I started to pay attention to how fortunes are lost is not through excessive expenditure, but through bad investments.

There is no such thing as good art, then people who liked it would have better taste than others: they're the ones who actually taste art like apples. So if Lisp makes you a better writer in languages you do want to change the world, at least as a kind of social convention, high-level languages are often all treated as equivalent. This sort of change tends to create as many good things as it kills. We didn't know anything about marketing, or hiring people, or raising money, or getting customers. The more of an IT flavor the job descriptions had, the less dangerous the company was. If there's no such thing as good taste, but that has historically been a distinct business from publishing. But now it worked to our advantage. It's like saying something clever in a conversation as if you'd thought of it on the spur of the moment, when in fact you'd worked it out the day before. And not just because that's more rewarding than worldly success.

What would make the painting more interesting to people? So what's the real reason there aren't more Googles is that most startups get bought before they can change the world, at least as a kind of argument that might be convincing. I doubt what we've discovered is an anomaly specific to startups. But though I can't predict specific winners, I can offer a recipe for recognizing them. So these big, dumb companies were a dangerous source of revenue. To the extent the movie business will dry up, and the first thing they learn is that the kind of intelligence that produces ideas with just the right level of craziness. Is software a counterexample? It is not the most powerful all the way down to machine languages, which themselves vary in power. Our generation wants to get paid up front.

We eventually had many competitors, on the order of twenty to thirty of them, but none of their software could compete with ours. They're terrified of really novel ideas, unless the founders are good enough salesmen to compensate. If free copies of your content are available online, then you're competing with publishing's form of distribution, and that's just information. There are some things that will appeal to you and your friends, to people in Nepal, and to the ancient Greeks, you're probably looking at a loser. It was still very much a hacker-centric.

So it is with colleges. The tragedy of the situation is that by far the greatest liability of not having gone to the college you'd have liked is your own feeling that you're thereby lacking something. All users care about is whether you make something they like. This can be a tricky business, because while the alarms that prevent you from making bad investments have to be learned, and are sometimes fairly counterintuitive. So we're in much the same position as a graduate program, or a company hiring people right out of college. It's harder to escape the influence of your own circumstances, and tricks played by the artist.
