✨ a film for every year of my life ✨ | The Commitments (1991) dir. Alan Parker
Soul is the music that people understand. Sure it's basic and it's simple, but it's something else, something special. ‘Cause it's honest, that's it. It’s honest. There's no fucking bullshit. It sticks its neck out and says it straight from the heart. Sure there's a lot of different music you can get off on but soul is more than that. It takes you somewhere else. It grabs you by the balls and lifts you above the shite.

Angeline Ball and Stewart Wright in Doc Martin (2004) Erotomania
S2E8
Mark Mylow comes in for his medical check up and Martin is concerned at one particular aspect of his physiology. Combined with fiancée Julie's big news, this could mean some bumps in the road as far as their relationship is concerned. Danny asks Louisa something important but her ambivalence is compounded by the fact that he is also planning to return to London to undertake his dream architectural project. Martin and Louisa have a heart to heart talk and, in his cups, he tells her exactly how he feels. Martin takes pharmacist Mrs. Tishell to task for constantly wearing a neck brace pointing out that in most cases, it isn't required. When she removes it however, it becomes apparent that it is anything but a psychosomatic crutch.
*This episode is dedicated to John Coleman, a prop manager who fell from a cliff and died during a break in filming.

Part 3: What Then?
This was supposed to be a three part series, but it will probably be 4 or 5 parts. Sydcarmy is a tangled mess of intense care interlaced with anxiety and denial. So they need HELP from their friends and family along the way! Here's a convo with Natalie and Carmen. It takes place just a few days after he found out that he'd made Sydney's best meal ever. Then he inadvertently confessed she's the best part of his day and his heart's dearest wish...j/k, but not really ;)
Tumblr media
On a brisk Monday afternoon Carmen rang the bell at Pete and Natalie's home. The doorbell's speaker answered back, with Natalie's hurried voice. "It's open Bear! Just come up to the nursery." He entered their home noting the new family photos hanging on the wall leading up the stairs. They were black and white shots with Pete and Nat walking into the hospital, the next just after Baby Angeline was placed in Natalie's arms, another with Pete and the baby, one shot of her curled bitty toes, and the last was all three of them in the hospital bed. Pete had hired a hospital photographer and as antithetical as that was to anyone with an ounce of Berzatto blood, Natalie let him do it. The result was so unexpectedly tender and beautiful that he paused on the stairs to soak it in. Pete is really a good guy. He was made from an entirely different mold than any man Carmy had grown up around. "Carm?!" Natalie called. "Coming." He turned into the nursery to find Natalie bundling up "Angie" and fastening her into one of those baby slings. Then with one fluid motion before he could speak, she slipped the sling over his shoulders. "Okay, Uncle she's yours!" "So, how does this work?" he asked, looking down at his tiny niece, his eyes as big as beach balls. Angie blinked back at him extremely unbothered.
Natalie rolled her eyes and chortled.
"It's already working. It's fool-proof! Okay, let me get my coat and we'll head out." They strolled down the older suburb's tree-lined streets past others pushing babies, walking dogs, and the occasional Amazon delivery truck. "Carmy, this is really nice and you're welcome to drop by anytime, but what did you want to talk about?" Natalie enquired. He had texted her the other night asking to discuss something important. He kept his eyes on Angie's blissful little face, swallowed, and began. "I'd like to split my share of the restaurant with Syd. She's put in so much work, took several months without pay, and even though I'm the EC she's the main developer of at least half of the menu and the weekly specials. When I was sick recently, she ran the place like a pro. She deserves it. Also, I think if I give her a financial stake she'll stay for at least 5 years. We need that. What do you think?"
Natalie contemplated him for a moment. "Well, part of me agrees and the other part...Carmy, please don't get defensive." "Nat. How can I not when you’ve said that?" "Is this a solely a business decision? Because if it isn't I don't think you need to or should do this to keep her. " Carmy stopped walking, his face falling with frustration and shame. "Have you been talking to Richie?" Natalie stopped and took his arm in hers. "No, I haven't. Look, sorry. What I meant is things are so good between you two." They resumed walking. "Yeah, and that's a problem?" "Not at all. The way you are together...maybe it's the hormones but I've cried sometimes because you are just yourself with her. I've never seen you smile so much with anyone else. Your freakin’ posture is more relaxed when she comes in the room. I could go on, Bear." "You see all that? What about-what about her? Am I any good for her?" he asked in a low, wistful tone. Natalie pulled his arm tighter. She paused, to choose her words carefully. She and Camry were no strangers to family interference in their love lives. "Well, I haven't known Sydney that long, but she tends to spiral, and she pushes through until she's sick or lashes out. Kinda like you do. I noticed that it’s gotten better though. Since we opened, you've been consistently checking in with her, collaborating with her, encouraging her, making her take breaks, and pouring time into her. She's far less doubtful; she believes in herself."
Carm nodded slowly, reflecting on Sydney's growth. "Well, she deserves that. I promised her that she wasn’t alone in this. My focus was not where it should’ve have been during the reno and Friends and Family.”
He exhaled heavily and went on.
“So, it sounds like she lights up my life and for her, I'm a good boss or even her big brother."
Natalie shook her head, smirking.
" Yeah, you’re a great boss now, but little sisters don't look at their brothers the way Sydney does you. Do you remember when we were all talking in my office and you spilled hot coffee on your shirt? You peeled it off and the poor girl looked at you, as your sister it pains me say this, like she wanted to jump you. When you left to get a clean shirt, she didn't remember what she had been saying." " What!?!? Okay...." Carm scoffed trying and failing to suppress a huge smile. "Also, does she ever leave before 11 instead of sitting in those greasy whites with you every single night for how long? One to two hours!?" She continued. "My point is if you want to divide your share with her because it's good business and fair, and I agree it is, then let me do it too so we're even. Otherwise, I think you’re already three-quarters of the way there with her. She doesn't need to be bought."
They walked in silence for a few minutes. "Natalie, I understand, but I still want to split my share. I think it’s the right thing to do. You don't need split yours though." "First I don't want the largest share of the restaurant and second.... Pete and I may move to be near his parents next year." Natalie bit her lip and glanced at Carmy worry etched in her brow.
"We think it would be good for Angie. You know, to be close to her grandparents and she'd have young cousins nearby too." Carm squeezed her arm, missing her already. "Yeah, I met them at the wedding. They were...Pete’s parents for sure. Angie would have a normal set of grandparents around." Natalie took a deep breath, a gamut of emotions crossing her face. "Choosing Pete was the biggest act of rebellion of my life. I honestly felt repulsed by him at first, until I realized that he was real, and I didn't have to be on guard all the time. Angeline should have that from the start." She bent over to kiss her baby's head which was protected from the cool air by a lilac-colored beanie. "Sydney's a really good choice too. Businesswise and/or otherwise. So, if you're certain about this call Uncle Cicero. This won't change anything with our loan repayment, but his lawyer could help draft a contract. Then we'll ask Sydney if she wants to accept and if she refuses...just give her one of those Sydney-land stares of yours."
Carmy groaned. "You did talk to Richie!"
Natalie erupted into a storm of giggles. Carmen dropped her arm.
"Look, he started it. I told him to chill, but that Sydney-land thing...You have an season pass, bro! It’s very cute though.”
Next time on "What Then?"- Sydney's workversary (work anniversary)

The reason so much nonsense happens at Fowl Manor isn't because of magic residue or old money insanity, it's because Domovoi "I'm the oldest so I know best" Butler, Tim "My house, my rules" Fowl, Angeline "I'm the lady of the house and real gentlemen always listen to a lady" Fowl, and Artemis "I'm a certified genius so what I say goes" Fowl II share at most two braincells that just bounce around like ping-pong balls, and it's only on obscenely rare occasions that any one of them has possession of both braincells at the same time.

Joker and Ace: Jester's Privilege
Chapter 2
“Remind me,” the girl whispered as the music struck up and he led her onto the floor, “what dance is this again?”
He glanced down at her, mildly alarmed. “It’s a waltz, Miss,” he said, more bluntly than he intended. “Don’t you have a dance card?” Did she even know how to dance? Some of his sisters’ speculations about who she might be sprung into his head unbidden.
She gave him a wry look. “A waltz?” she repeated, ignoring the question. “In a ballroom in Bath in 183-? That doesn’t seem exactly…proper.”
Theodore didn’t see what the year had to do with anything--but at least she sounded like she knew what she was talking about. “My father’s balls attempt to mimic Almack’s in every manner. But if you’d rather wait for the quadrille…?”
The girl smiled dazzlingly. “Oh no, of course not,” she said, then, with a quick glance about her at the other dancers taking the floor, assumed the beginning position for the waltz with startling ease.
He bowed, she curtsied, and Theodore took her right hand in his left and placed his right on her shoulder blade almost mechanically, having done this so many times he barely had to think about it. She was quite a bit shorter than him, he realized--the top of her head barely came to his shoulder, and from that vantage point, he noticed that her hair seemed to almost sparkle, as if she’d dusted her hair with tiny diamonds. How on earth she’d managed that he had no idea, but the thought of how envious his sisters would be at the sight of it made him crack a slight smile.
The strings struck up, and Theodore was struck with them with the strange look the girl had given him when he’d first approached her. “Do I…know you from somewhere, Miss?” he asked carefully.
She couldn’t read the expression that came over her face. “I don’t believe so.”
The waltz began, and much to Theodore’s surprise, the girl moved through the intricacies of the dance effortlessly--it was like dancing with a cloud on his arm. She knew exactly what she was doing, but still let him lead. He’d rarely danced with a better partner, and so distracted was he by this that it took him a moment to realize that, though he usually regarded it as a necessary nicety of polite society, he was actually enjoying dancing for once.
If he were being honest, it made him feel a bit uneasy.
“So,” the girl said at length, “Mr. Theodore Ace--for I believe that’s who you are, though you didn’t introduce yourself--I must ask, do you often ask girls you haven’t been introduced to to dance?”
“I don’t generally make a practice of it, no,” he said as they glided past the punch bowl, guests staring at them in shock as they clutched punch glasses and fans.
“Why ask me then? Were you so enchanted by my beauty that you couldn’t help yourself? Or--” she suddenly looked at him very shrewdly “--are you dancing with me because you deemed it the best way to scandalize your sisters?”
So stunned was he by not just the substance of the question, but by the fact that something so shrewd and direct had been said in such a soft, gentle voice such as hers that it uncharacteristically left him floundering for a response. “Uh--”
“--don’t feel the need to answer that,” she cut with an amused smile on her face before he could come up with something clever to say. “I’ll take your intentions at face value, if you’d like--although, don’t look now, but that’s rather difficult when I can feel your sisters’ eyes burning holes into the back of my head.”
Disobeying her, he allowed himself a quick glance up at the balcony--and sure enough, Angeline’s face was flushed red with anger, Emmeline’s white with shock, and the both of them whispered to Ida furiously. However, Ida’s face was expressionless, almost placid--something that should have made him uneasy, but at the moment he couldn’t bring himself to care.
“Hmmm,” the girl said thoughtfully, “doesn’t listen to instructions, clearly hates his family, given that he’s perfectly willing to embarrass them in this manner, but still dependent on them for the moment, quiet, a little bitter, dances like a dream, a bit unapproachable, probably reads Eliot--wait, no no, that’s too soon,” she cut herself off. “Tennyson?”
“Um, yes,” he answered, startled. How did she know that? “What exactly are you doing?”
She giggled. “Trying to make out your character, of course.” That phrase sounded vaguely familiar, though Theodore couldn’t put his finger on why. “As one does in ballrooms.”
“Well, I’m afraid you have me at a disadvantage there, Miss,” he said, trying to regain some control over--well, whatever this was. “What’s your name?”
“Oooh, you’re asking me this now?” she asked, the smile on her face almost broadening into an unladylike grin, but not quite. “Hmmm. Well, I will tell you--just not now. Later.”
It was all he could do not to gawk. “What? You won’t tell me?”
“No, I said later I’d tell you,” she said in a lower tone as another couple spun past them, clearly trying not to stare.
“Are you acting mysterious for your own amusement, or are you truly hiding something?” The thought briefly crossed his mind that she might be making some attempt at infiltration into his father’s circle, but he dismissed it almost immediately--no one making such an attempt would show their hand so plainly.
She laughed. “Yes and yes.” She craned her neck over his shoulder for a moment to peer at some of the other dancers. “Oh dear, do you think I’m a little overdressed?”
“Then may I ask what exactly you’re doing here?”
“I’m dancing. With you. That’s generally why girls go to balls--not to dance with you specifically, of course, just to dance. Although,” she said, looking around the room, “I suspect from many of the looks I’m getting that that certainly applies to many of the ladies in this room.” She smiled up at him. “Aren’t you popular?”
“If you’d just wanted to dance, you could have gone to any of the assembly rooms instead of stealing into a private ball,” he said, really more curiously than accusingly.
She shrugged fractionally. “Perhaps I heard that this ball was the thing.”
The girl caught the disbelieving look he shot at her. “Ooh, alright, I suppose I can give you a bit more than that. I’m--well, how to put it--” she lowered her voice to nearly a whisper, causing him to have to lean close “--I’m casing the joint.”
“You’re casing the what?”
“You strike me as quite clever, Mr. Ace, if you don’t mind the presumption,” she said. “I’ll leave that up to you to parse. I’m sure you can manage.”
Theodore certainly didn’t feel clever--he’d never felt less so in his life. Every time he felt he’d felt he’d found some semblance of footing with this girl, it crumbled beneath his feet faster than he could blink. He really shouldn’t have been letting it needle him as much as he did--after all, he had accomplished his object in dancing with her, his sisters were undoubtedly beyond livid--but despite his desires and better judgment, he found himself too intrigued by this girl to stop asking questions.
“In your object of ‘casing the joint,’ as you call it, you decided it was wise to leave your escort at home?” he asked.
The smile on her face that so far had not wavered flickered suddenly. “I’m afraid there was none to leave.”
A sudden cold fear for her gripped him at those words, remembering what sorts of people spun about them in this ballroom, watched them from the edges of the room, from the balconies. He remembered the impassive look in Ida’s eyes as she stared down at them, and fought the urge to glance up at her again. He became aware that the waltz was swiftly coming to an end, and as he led her through the last motions of the dance, he pulled her slightly closer than was strictly necessary. “Listen,” he said in a low voice, “I don’t know what you think this ball is. I don’t know what your purpose was in coming here. You might know what you’ve walked into, you might not. But I’d feel morally responsible if I didn’t tell you that you’ve walked straight into a viper’s nest in coming here, Miss--everyone in this room could bring you harm in almost any way you could imagine, even more so if they knew of your circumstances. And you’ve ensured that you’ve attracted the attention of everyone in attendance--even more so by dancing with me, I’m afraid.”
He couldn’t tell if the girl was taking the gravity in his tone seriously. She studied his face carefully. “‘Everyone in this room,’” she repeated. “Are you an exception to that rule, Theodore Ace?”
The music swelled and came to an end, partners separating and facing each other. “I should think so,” he said as he took his bow, more steel in his tone than he had anticipated.
“Good,” the girl said as she rose from her curtsy. Her radiant smile returned. “That’s exactly what I wanted to know.”
He offered her his hand, and he led her off the floor, now ignoring the stares and whispers as they passed by.
“Also, thank you for the warning,” the girl said softly. She seemed to have a knack of speaking at the perfect volume so as not to be easily overheard, he noticed. “It was quite honorable of you.”
Her hand slipped out of his as they came to the edge of the room. “If you appreciate it,” he began, “perhaps you could--”
He turned to her, but she had vanished.
“Hmm.” He looked around to see if she had slipped into the crowd somewhere, but he couldn’t find her. Shrugging, he strode off towards the exit, ignoring other guests’ attempts to speak to him, hoping the girl would heed his advice--and wondering how soon he would inevitably regret dancing with her.

A letter can be seen in front of Logan's door, with it, there is a wrapped gift with a ribbon
"To Logan Horatius
Dear Logan (Would it be ok if i called you dear? Sorry if not!) when i heard that you came back to the manor, i couldn't help but write something for you! If the writing in this letter is bad, please forgive me, i'm writing it in the middle of a match, since i couldn't bear to wait any longer to send you something.
How are you? Hope everything is going well and that nothing has happened during the time you were off! I hope we are able to go into matches together soon enough, as, even if we did not go into a lot during your previous stay here, i remember you being a really good teammate! I also came back just some time ago, so we are both a bit rusty, so don't be afraid of me getting mad if you mess up! I'm also doing it a lot! In fact, just in this match, i already got terrorshocked three times! Can you believe it? (Ps: Right now i'm the only survivor, so don't worry, i'm not writing to you while my teammates are getting sent back to the manor)
Have you also heard of the ball they will be doing here at the manor? It looks amazing and so many people seem to be coming! I don't have a partner yet, so i was thinking if you would also like to go there with me? If not, that would be absolutely ok as well! But i would be really happy to go with you! (Ps: It has been a long time since i have went to one, so i might accidentaly step on your foot while were dancing)
I have some more things to write but i think the crows will find me soon enough if i stay here, so we can talk more later! Hope to see you again soon! Goodbye!
From Angeline"
@askthepianist (EHEHEHEHE <- EVIL)
Logan opened the door and was at first startled from the sudden gift and a letter on his doorstep, but then he recognised that signature and handwriting and he almost beamed with happiness when he realised it was Angeline. He chuckled and carefully opened the gift with the letter as well, reading it and he couldn't help but giggle a little while doing so. The situation Angeline was in was quite silly to him.
"Well I can't just miss such an opportunity.. I'll respond to her right now actually, can't really waste much of our time." He muttered to himself before walking back to his room and taking his pen and the paper.
"It's great to hear from you too, Dear Angeline. Everything was alright while I was absent, no need to worry. Please just take care of yourself during matches and don't get hurt.. don't be reckless like me."
"I missed you alot, I'll be honest."
"..."
"Anyways, I'll gladly accept your offer to be your partner in the wedding ball event... I haven't gone into such events in a while, so I'm not the best at dancing, forgive me please. When you aren't busy.. you can meet me at the greenhouse, I'll be there."
"Have a nice day, ma'am."
:)
-With love respect, Logan H.
The letter was neatly folded into an envelope and Logan left it under Angeline's doorstep too.

Crystal's Favorite 2023 Books
This year there were a lot of excellent books that came my way. Here are the ones that were the most memorable and are the most likely to be re-reads in the future.
Rez Ball by Byron Graves Heartdrum [My Review]
These days, Tre Brun is happiest when he is playing basketball on the Red Lake Reservation high school team—even though he can’t help but be constantly gut-punched with memories of his big brother, Jaxon, who died in an accident.
When Jaxon’s former teammates on the varsity team offer to take Tre under their wing, he sees this as his shot to represent his Ojibwe rez all the way to their first state championship. This is the first step toward his dream of playing in the NBA, no matter how much the odds are stacked against him.
But stepping into his brother’s shoes as a star player means that Tre can’t mess up. Not on the court, not at school, and not with his new friend, gamer Khiana, who he is definitely not falling in love with.
After decades of rez teams almost making it, Tre needs to take his team to state. Because if he can live up to Jaxon’s dreams, their story isn’t over yet.
Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley Henry Holt and Company [My Review]
Perry Firekeeper-Birch has always known who she is – the laidback twin, the troublemaker, the best fisher on Sugar Island. Her aspirations won’t ever take her far from home, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. But as the rising number of missing Indigenous women starts circling closer to home, as her family becomes embroiled in a high-profile murder investigation, and as greedy grave robbers seek to profit off of what belongs to her Anishinaabe tribe, Perry begins to question everything.
In order to reclaim this inheritance for her people, Perry has no choice but to take matters into her own hands. She can only count on her friends and allies, including her overachieving twin and a charming new boy in town with unwavering morals. Old rivalries, sister secrets, and botched heists cannot – will not – stop her from uncovering the mystery before the ancestors and missing women are lost forever.
Sometimes, the truth shouldn’t stay buried.
Gloria Buenrostro is Not My Girlfriend by Brandon Hoàng Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR) [My Review]
Gary Võ is one of the few Vietnamese kids in his school and has been shy for as long as he can remember—being ignored and excluded by his classmates comes with the territory. So when the most popular guy in his grade offers Gary the opportunity to break into his inner circle, Gary jumps at the chance. All he needs to do is steal the prized possession of the most beautiful and untouchable girl they know—Gloria Buenrostro.
But as Gary gets to know Gloria, he’s taken in by her authenticity and genuine interest in who he really is. Soon, they’re best friends. Being part of the “in crowd” has always been Gary’s dream, but as he comes closer to achieving infamy, he risks losing the first person who recognizes his true self. Gary must consider if any amount of popularity is worth losing a true friend.
Throwback by Maurene Goo Zando Young Readers [My Review]
Back to the Future meets The Joy Luck Club in this YA contemporary romance about a Korean American girl sent back to the ’90s to (reluctantly) help her teenage mom win Homecoming Queen.
Being a first-generation Asian American immigrant is hard. You know what’s harder? Being the daughter of one. Samantha Kang has never gotten along with her mother, Priscilla—and has never understood her bougie-nightmare, John Hughes high school expectations. After a huge fight between them, Sam is desperate to move forward—but instead, finds herself thrown back. Way back.
To her shock, Sam finds herself back in high school . . . in the ’90s . . . with a 17-year-old Priscilla. Now this Gen Z girl must try to fit into an analog world. She’s got the fashion down, but everything else is baffling. What is “microfiche”? What’s with the casual racism and misogyny? And why does it feel like Priscilla is someone she could actually be . . . friends with?
Sam’s blast to the past has her finding the right romance in the wrong time while questioning everything she thought she knew about her mom . . . and herself. Will Sam figure out what she needs to do to fix things for her mom so that she can go back to a time she understands? Brimming with heart and humor, Maurene Goo’s time-travel romance asks big questions about what exactly one inherits and loses in the immigrant experience.
Reggie & Delilah by Elise Bryant Harper Collins [My Review]
Delilah always keeps her messy, gooey insides hidden behind a wall of shrugs and yeah, whatevers. She goes with the flow—which is how she ends up singing in her friends’ punk band as a favor, even though she’d prefer to hide at the merch table.
Reggie is a D&D Dungeon Master and self-declared Blerd. He spends his free time leading quests and writing essays critiquing the game under a pseudonym, keeping it all under wraps from his disapproving family.
These two, who have practically nothing in common, meet for the first time on New Year’s Eve. And then again on Valentine’s Day. And then again on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s almost like the universe is pushing them together for a reason.
Delilah wishes she were more like Reggie—open about what she likes and who she is, even if it’s not cool. Except . . . it’s all a front. Reggie is just role-playing someone confident. The kind of guy who could be with a girl like Delilah.
As their holiday meetings continue, the two begin to fall for each other. But what happens once they realize they’ve each fallen for a version of the other that doesn’t really exist?
