I think the other HB Take I've grown to dislike the most is
'When Via realizes what her father sacrificed for her, she'll be so thankful / sorry for doubting him!!'
and like, no?? no she shouldn't be?
it was never her decision for her parents to stay together all that time, they made that choice themselves. The kid is not responsible for what the adults are doing. The show pulling a "Stolas got hurt for her sake so she needs to be grateful for that when Stolas is the one who made the choice to do it" is lousy logic, imo. It's blaming Via for being too young to know what was going on and expecting her to answer for her parents' choices & actions
not to mention It's made very clear that all the fighting after Stolas cheated is making her home life miserable. Anyone who's been between two warring parents will tell you how much it sucks
and also like - maybe the show wants to frame it that Stolas gave her a 'normal life' but the show is wrong about that, gonna be blunt
nothing about the Goetia's home life was ever 'normal'. Stella & Stolas never wanted to marry. they never wanted a child together. Everything about their life was artificial from the get-go and doomed to failure, especially since Stella presumably never even put in the effort to playact 'happy families' once Via was born
and like, the show has written Stella to be so comically evil that she threw Still Not Divorced parties in their house, where Via was living, that she advertised in the newspaper. Via would have to be pretty checked out to not notice that Stella and Stolas can't stand one another. Kids aren't dumb about that kind of thing, they will notice. And given Stella does nothing but screech/insult Stolas every time she's onscreen (and it's implied she's physically abused him before), if Stolas actually cared about Via's wellbeing he'd want her far away from Stella. This self-martyring routine of his makes no sense.
On some level a lot of people judge parents irl for staying with abusive partners if they're subjecting a child to that environment, too, and that's with the understanding the parent loved/still loves the abuser on some level. Stolas never loved Stella. Why is he subjecting Via to her, especially when he's the one who's a prince and could easily have her thrown out of the palace?
it makes the shows' determination to never show what the dynamic between Stella and Via is even more frustrating, because if they did get one it would at least lend some credence to Stolas' 'I thought there was some benefit to us staying together for Via's sake' routine. if she has a relationship with her mother then it makes some sense, even if that relationship is strained at times. but the writers are terrified of giving Stella any dimension at all so I'd bet good money we won't even see them exchange a single line of dialogue by the end of s2 (unless it's for Via to be manipulated by her, since she needs to be the world's biggest dummy so Stolas can cry some more)
(also like, sidenote that's just been annoying me personally - why would a Hell noble be so hung up on the notion of having a nuclear family? he's royalty. he can easily afford to raise Via alone. what are the normative values of Hell, exactly?? why would anyone care if Stolas gets a divorce? why can't the show clearly indicate what is and isn't expected of royalty in terms of upkeep of behavior and reputation?)
(also also, if Stolas was written to be deluding himself about what he did being good for Via then this could be interesting. but I doubt they're gonna go there with the creator's pet he's turned into in s2)
She probably will end up running back to Stolas, apologizing and expressing her gratitude for anything. Because that's the kind of show this is and that's the kind of writer Viv is.

a few days after Luke and Stella move into their apartment, most of the remaining furniture get delivered and they invite jack over for dinner, despite still not having a table and chairs. he's still in the area since there was really no point in him going back to Michigan for like 2 weeks just come back for training camp.
he comes over, bringing wine that he know Stella likes, and is bouncing off the walls with excitement.
Luke shows him around a little bit while Stella cooks because everyone knows not to disturb Stella in the kitchen. Luke can occasionally get away with hugging her from behind and giving her a kiss to the cheek but it all depends.
Luke brings jack to their room and jack asks him, "so now where are you gonna hide the ring now that I'm not the next door over?"
"you think you can hang on to it for a little bit longer? we just moved in together and so I just don't think the timing is right."
"yea. and in case I haven't said it yet, I'm proud of you moose. for getting the girl of your dreams, moving in with her, and building a life for yourself. it's all Quinn and I wanted for you. especially after meeting her. she's prefect for you."
"thanks jack. I love her so much, there's no one else."
"I know. trev and I talk about it a lot actually. you guys make each other so happy and we're happy for you."
"yea" Luke is a blushing mess during the whole conversation with jack about Stella. jack breaks the love in the air by saying, "and respectfully, I'm glad that we don't share a wall anymore."
Luke laughs and says, "yea, sorry."
"the sex has to be good if she's that loud."
"the sex is good. it's great actually. don't tell trevor that part though."
"oh I won't. Quinn yea, trevor no."
that conversations ends by Stella calling them for dinner. they both smile and head into the kitchen. jack giving Stella a hug and Luke kissing her softly. they eat at the island in the kitchen and jack is just beaming.
"why are you smiling so much jack? it's creepy."
"I'm just happy for you guys stel. this is a big step and I'm happy for you."
"thanks j. we're both really happy about it and excited. and don't worry, you can always come over for dinner. it's not like we're that far, your building is like 2 blocks from here."
"thanks. I'm probably gonna be over a lot then."
"door is always open. unless my brother is with you. then maybe not."
"fair enough. the place turned out great by the way. definitely looks a lot better then mine."
"that's because you wouldn't let me decorate."
"I need my space to look like me, not you. how long did this take?"
"a few hours. well a few hours after we spent two hours buying all of it. all we really needed after the second was the furniture to come. the couch and chairs came like 2 days after we moved in, our dresser came the day after we moved in, and we're still waiting on the dining set. I'm not too worried about it. the dining set is more just there for decoration or if either of us decide to have teammates come over. or if your parents are in town."
"fair."
jack hangs out with them for a while that night before going back to his own place and letting the young couple enjoy their own space for the first time. he's smiling the whole way back to his apartment. jack ends up sending a text to trev and Quinn (in a group chat they have to talk abt Luke and Stella) telling them abt the apartment.
jack: the apartment is great. very much them although I think Stella did all of the decorating.
jack: *insert pic of the ring that we can decide on later*
jack: do not tell Luke I sent you guys this but this is the ring. he bought it a while ago. I'm placing a bet on with 6 months is when he pops the question.
trevor: I'm glad they're settling in.
trevor: and I'm thinking a year. I know Stella won't get married until after she graduates so he prob won't ask until around then.
quinn: I'm so happy for them they are so good for each other.
quinn: and I'm thinking next summer.
jack: we shall see boys.
Luke and Stella sleep peacefully again that night knowing that they get to wake up next to each other tomorrow and everyday after that.

matt casey x reader? something hurt/comfort where they are both firefighters reader is on squad and matt is well, truck obviously
Anon! I’m sorry this took so long. School is in the thick of it lately, but I hope you like this!
Y/N woke up to noise from the baby monitor, making it known that their three-month-old was up and needed his parents' attention. You make your way out of bed and to his nursery. “Hi, there, baby. I’ve got you. Let’s spend some Mom and Dallin time before Dad gets up.” You say as you lift your son out of his crib. You are holding him, walking around the nursery, when you hear a noise from the doorway. You look at the source and see your husband smiling at you.
“Morning, Y/N.” “Morning, my love.” You reply, walking towards Matt as Dallin reaches out to his dad. Matt takes him from your arms, bending down to kiss you. “You ready to go back today?” “Yeah, but I’m going to miss this little chunk.” You say, running a hand over the soft hair on your son's head. “He’ll be ok. He’s going to be with Cindy and Donna. It’s summer break. The kids will be around to help.” Matt replies reassuringly as you kiss his cheek, watching his face turn red. The simple fact that you can still make him blush after several years and a kid together made you happy.
“That’s true. I’m more worried about you and me than him. It’s the longest I’ve been away from him, and you will be dealing with the aftermath.” You reply as you walk to the kitchen with your husband trailing behind, listening intently to Dallin as he tries to babble to his dad. “You’ll be ok. You know Cindy and Donna will keep us updated.” He replies as he enters the kitchen and sets Dallin in his bouncer, and gets his bottle ready.
You watch as Matt feeds your son, which makes your heart swell. You watch as Dallin takes in the sights and sounds of his dad talking and moving around the kitchen. “Staring much love?” “Maybe. But you’re a good dad. It amazes me how much this suits us.” “Yeah, it does.” He replies as he brings Dallin to his shoulder to burp him, putting the bottle in the sink to be washed.
The little family continues to get ready for the day, and you can’t help but tear up when you drop Dallin off at the Boden residence. Donna gives both you and Matt a hug, assuring you that Dallin will be just fine and that Cindy would be over later. You and Matt head back to your car and head to the station.
You walk hand in hand to the floor and hear cheers welcoming you back. Capp and Tony are the first to hug you, making it known that you were missed on Squad. You then feel a hand on your shoulder and turn around to see Severide, a smile on his face.
“My best squad member is back!” “You bet. Ya know, your best squad members baby wants to see his uncle again soon.” “He wants to see me, or you want me and Stella to watch him while you and Matt go on a date?” “Mmm, both,” you say as you walk into the firehouse.
Boden goes over the morning brief, and not long after, the bells go off. You and the rest of the station jump into action and make your way to the house fire. “Y/N, Cruz with me. We’re searching the top floor.” Severide says as he, Casey, Boden, and Hermann assess the situation.
The three of you mask up and head in, trying to find anyone still inside. “It’s clear!” You yell, and you start to make your way out of the building when everything goes black.
“Severide, where’s my wife?” Casey asks as he watches the two men exit the building. “She was right behind me.” He replies as he has to hold his friend back from running in. “Brett, Foster. Go in with Cruz and Severide and find Y/N.” Boden says as he grabs Casey’s arm. The four head back into the building and hear your PASS Alarm going off. “We got her, chief,” Cruz says into the radio as the other three get you on the backboard and carry you out.
Casey watches in horror as he sees you on the backboard, with soot-covered cheeks, as Sylvie takes off your mask and puts oxygen on you. “Chief…” “Go.” Matt all but runs to you, hopping in the back of the ambulance, grabbing your hand as you come too. You feel someone holding your hand and hear sirens, but the lack of oxygen makes it so you can’t think clearly. You mumble something, grabbing Sylvie’s attention, and she ups the oxygen levels. You feel the ambulance come to a stop and hear several voices outside of the rig.
It takes you a minute to realize what’s going on and when you do, you nearly pass out again. You did the one thing you had promised yourself that you wouldn’t do after you married Matt and had Dallin. You got hurt on the job. You go to lift the oxygen mask off your face when you feel Matt moving your hand away, “Y/N don’t. Please. Not until we know for sure.” He whispers, nearly begging. You nod in response as you feel the gurney being moved.
The team at Med makes sure you’re taken care of, and while you’re in the treatment room, the rest of the station shows up in the waiting room of the ED. Matt sees Herrmann first, and their silent conversation tells him that Cindy and Donna are on the way with Dallin. He sighs and drops into the closest chair, head in his hands. He doesn’t hear Cindy and Donna come in and only realizes they had when he feels a weight by his foot. He looks up and sees the car seat holding his son, along with the diaper bag. He notices the baby stir and gently lifts him out of the car seat, bringing him to his chest.
“Hi, buddy.” He says as Dallin grabs the collar of his shirt in his little fist, yawning and snuggling into his dad's shirt, eyes drooping. Matt rests his free hand on the back of his son's head, ignoring the hustle and bustle of the waiting room around him until he hears his name being called. He looks up and sees Maggie standing at the doors of the ED. “Matt, you can go see her if you want. Y/N just had some scrapes, a minor wrist fracture, and minor smoke inhalation.” She says as he stands up and walks towards the door. “Can I bring Dallin? “Of course,” Maggie says as they walk into the ED and your treatment room.
You look up at the noise you hear outside your room and smile as Matt walks in, with Dallin in his arms and Maggie right behind them. “I’ll leave you guys alone; holler if you need anything,” she says, closing the curtain. “Hi, hun.” You say sheepishly, not wanting to look Matt in the eye.
“Y/N. Look at me, please.” “Matt. I can’t. Not when I know I did something stupid after I promised myself I wouldn’t.” You say, tears running down your cheeks. Matt sits on the bed next to you, shifting Dallin in his arms as he lifts your chin to look at him. “You didn’t do anything stupid. Not you. Never. It could’ve happened to anyone.” “Matt…” “Y/N love, listen to me. This wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t anyone’s fault. You couldn’t have known that a board was going to fall. Cruz couldn’t have known; Severide couldn’t have known. No one. Accidents happen, especially with this job. You and I both know that. Was it pretty damn scary? Yeah, it was. But I know you and you, Y/N Casey, are tough.” He says, wiping tears from your cheeks with a thumb while he shifts Dallin into a more comfortable position in his arms.
“How long has he been asleep?” “Since I was holding him in the waiting room. Please tell me you’re not going to blame yourself for this.” “I’ll try not to.” You reply with a slight chuckle. He smiles and asks the nurse who comes in if you could be discharged. She replies that you could and gets started on the paperwork.
You get dressed in the clothes that were brought while you and Matt were talking. It took a minute to get the long sleeve top on with the wrist brace you had on, but you did it. Matt had Stella bring in the car seat and diaper bag so he could put Dallin down to help you put on your shoes. When Dallin wasn’t in his dad's arms, he was not a happy camper and started crying. “Oh buddy, dad’s sorry. But I gotta help mom for a minute.” He says, fishing in the bag next to it for a pacifier. He finds it, and Dallin accepts it, his cries quieting.
You smile at your husband and run a hand through his hair as he finishes tying your shoes. “What?” “Just admiring you being the best husband and dad is all,” you say, reaching for his hand as he stands up. He slings the diaper bag over his shoulder and picks up the car seat with the other. The two of you walk out of Med and to your car brought over by someone from the firehouse.
“Let’s go home.” You say, sliding into the front seat as Matt gets Dallin situated in the back. “Let’s,” he replies, getting into the driver's side, grabbing your hand and starting the car, and making the drive home.

Always Gotta Be Touching
Tumblr media
1972 on the top deck of the Wings over Europe tour bus. Always touching, here’s the couple with Paul’s hand on Linda’s knee. Maybe that’s for practical reasons to keep Linda’s dress from from flying up in the wind; 😎 but that doesn’t mean it can’t be an affectionate gesture as well.
Also, it may look like Paul’s arm is halfway inside the bodice of Linda’s dress. 🥺 Zoom in and you will see that is not the case and that his arm is actually resting behind her. Besides, as demonstrative as they are, I doubt the couple would pose for a photo of Paul feeling up Linda, lol. 🤣 😆🤭
Tumblr media
May 24, 1976 Madison Square Garden, New York. Prior to their concert, the band members meet with 300 members of the Daily Mirror Pop Club. A triplet of gestures of affection are on display here: head leaning on shoulder, hands around arm, and hand on leg. Lovely! 😊 🥰 ☺️
Tumblr media
1976 Wings concert. Heh heh, Paul — you probably thought the camera wouldn’t catch that. 😍 🤭
Tumblr media
1980 at their home in East Sussex, England. I don’t know if this was an interrupted hug or if they were in the middle of dancing, but it looks romantic enough to go on this blog. 🥰

Hi, Eve
Rose here from yesterday, thank you very much for the Birthday message, I wasn't expecting you to read it let alone reply but I was looking for Coops kids Birthday fluff specifically. It doesn't matter if you don't have time however as I don't want to be a bother.
Hello Rose, and happy (belated) 20th birthday! Sorry for the wait--I really wanted to get this one right to celebrate such an important number. I hope your day was absolutely fantastic! SW credit goes to @lumosinlove, but Stella is an OC
Combined with asks for Sirius lightly making fun of Remus' accent and Remus yelling at a game show (@nazar4114)
“Medusa!” Stella shouted with all the force in her thirteen-year-old lungs. Remus leaned forward on the couch. “Medusa!”
The front door opened with a creak. “I’m h—”
“Yes!” they cheered in unison as Nicole answered correctly. Remus turned and gave Stella a double high-five, feeling his heart squeeze at the vivid joy on her round face. “Good guess.”
“I knew she was gonna get it,” Stella said with a pump of her fist as she turned back to the show and folded her legs underneath her.
“Gonna,” a familiar deep voice mimicked from the doorway. Paper bags rustled before footsteps stopped behind the couch; Remus tilted his chin up without sparing a glance, and Sirius pressed a laugh-laced kiss to his cheek before dropping one on Stella’s head as well. “You sound too much like your dad.”
“Love you, too,” Remus said wryly.
“I’ll take ‘Myths and Moths’ for 400, please.” Nicole’s voice snapped his attention back to the screen, and Stella narrowed her eyes.
“Daily Double!” the automated voice announced. Stella gasped; Remus bit his lower lip. “This mythical shield was wielded by Athena, and is sometimes said to be made of goat skin.”
“Aegis,” Stella whispered, then raised her voice. “It’s the Aegis, Nicole. You know this.”
“We know you do,” Remus said, scooting forward. “You just guessed whose head is on it.”
Nicole’s buzzer went off with two seconds to spare. “What is the Aegis?”
“Hell yeah!” Stella whooped.
Remus turned to her and raised his eyebrows. “Excuse you.”
“Sorry.”
“Are you two going to do this the whole afternoon?” Sirius asked from the kitchen, obviously amused. “We might need to get the neighbors some noise-cancelling headphones.”
Stella blew a dark lock of hair out of her eyes as she flopped her head back. “It’s almost final Jeopardy, papa. We have, like, ten minutes.”
Sirius blinked at her, then shook his head. “I swear you two share genes.”
“Ope, you caught me,” Remus said over the noise of the commercial break. “When I was 20 and had literally never left Wisconsin, I went and had a secret kid in Maine who looks terribly like you just so that someone would watch Jeopardy reruns with me thirteen years later. Oops.”
“It’s the truth,” Stella said with great gravity. “I remember.”
“Mon dieu,” Sirius muttered, though he couldn’t keep a smile down. He had never been able to hide around Stella, not once in the three years since they had adopted her. It was one of the things Remus loved most about him. “By the way, nobody under the age of fourteen is allowed in the kitchen for the next…hour. Ish.”
Stella squirmed around until she could rest her arms on the back of the couch. “What if I get thirsty?”
“I’m sure you can invoke birthday privileges and ask your dad to get something for you.”
“Birthday privileges?” Remus scoffed. “Nobody in this house has a birthday today. Yours was last month, and mine’s in March.”
“It’s my birthday,” Stella said.
“What? No, it’s not.”
“Yeah-huh.”
“Your birthday is in June.”
“It’s today.”
“Or maybe July?”
“It’s today, in December, when there’s snow,” she insisted, throwing herself back against the pillows. “Come on, dad, that’s not funny anymore.”
Remus raised his eyebrows. “Is somebody too old to find their poor old dad amusing now? Can you go back to being twelve so somebody will laugh at my jokes again? I know, I know, we're super lame compared to all your friends’ parents—”
“So lame,” Sirius agreed from the kitchen.
“—but I like to think we get one more year of pre-teen cuteness before the teen angst takes over.”
Stella sat up again with a groan. Looking at her, Remus saw a mix of himself and Sirius that had always baffled him, considering they had adopted her comparatively late in her life; beneath it was something uniquely Stella. Maybe it was her double-jointed elbows, or the board-straightness of her hair next to their curls, but there was no mistaking that she was her own person through and through. He loved that about her. “I’m not going to be a terrible teenager.”
Sirius poked his head around the edge of the kitchen—his nose was adorned with a smudge of flour. “Can I record that for future use?”
“Non.”
“Ooo, using the French,” Remus hissed. “That transformation is already beginning.”
“It’s not like you were bad teenagers, right?” She settled upside-down on the couch with her flamingo-patterned socks high in the air.
“I almost convinced Grandma to let me dye my hair blue, but otherwise I was pretty good.”
“I was terrible,” Sirius laughed. “I didn’t talk to anybody for a solid three years.”
Stella frowned. “How? I think I’d die if I did that.”
“He’s stubborn,” Remus stage-whispered.
“I heard that.”
Stella suppressed her laughter as best she could, but she was about as good at hiding her emotions around them as Sirius was. She didn’t really giggle—the amount her voice had deepened over the past three years always gave Remus whiplash—but her laugh had the same cadence as it did the first day they heard it. While Stella had been quiet at first, it only took love and time to bring her out of her shell. Within a year she settled into their lives like she was always meant to be there.
A thoughtful look crossed her face. “This is my last year before high school.”
“Does it feel different?”
“Not really.” She paused, then shrugged. “And a little. I don’t feel older. It just feels like there’s stuff I won’t get to do anymore.”
“And a lot more you will get to do.” Sirius left his dishtowel on the counter before joining them on Stella’s other side. “You can drive soon, you’ll get a longer curfew, you get more freedom…”
“I guess.”
“What are you going to miss?” Remus asked as she toyed with the hem of her shirt. It was a basic Lions FAN jersey; he was fairly sure she bought it to be ironic. That, and she only wore one of theirs if she was upset with the other, or if one needed a boost at a game.
“I dunno.” A few beats of silence passed. “My classmates. My team. It feels like everything’s going to turn upside down.”
“You can still keep in touch with your friends, and I bet your team won’t be too different,” Sirius said quietly. “Even if it does, that doesn’t mean you have to give all of them up. People change in different ways. They come and go on their own time.”
“There’s going to be a lot of upside-downs over the next couple years, kid.” Remus offered her a smile. “But you’re going to be just fine.”
“You two sound like such dads right now.”
“This might shock you, but that’s because we are.”
The corner of her mouth tugged up and she lolled her head to the side to look at Sirius. “Is the cake done?”
“Fifteen more minutes.”
“Will you watch final Jeopardy with us?”
“What’s the category?”
“US Presidents.”
Sirius exhaled through his nose, but nodded. She grinned and turned herself upright to snuggle against his arm. “You just enjoy watching me lose.”
---------------------------
“Alright, is everyone ready?” Sirius called from the kitchen.
“On three,” Remus said, raising his phone camera. “One, two, three!”
“Happy birthday to you,” over a dozen voices sang. They were off-tempo and so out of key the composer was probably spinning in his grave, but Stella’s clear joy didn’t waver for a millisecond even as her cheeks reddened. “Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Stella, happy birthday to you!”
Finn, of course, dragged out the last note. So did Leo, Logan, Kasey, James, Lily, and Talker in varying degrees of awful harmony attempts. It was terrible, and beautiful. “Make a wish,” Sirius said softly as he set the cake down and stepped back. His eyes were the brightest quicksilver Remus had seen in many moons.
Stella closed her eyes, took a breath, and blew as hard as she could—the entire room erupted into cheers when all the candles went out. She was laughing and blushing at the same time when Remus turned the lights back on, though the humor won out in the end and she helped pass plates of cake to her many aunts and uncles. Like every year prior, Regulus managed to smear a bit of frosting on her chin, only to immediately deny it with great offense when she noticed. It was becoming a bit of a tradition—one that Remus never grew tired of.
I know what I would wish for, Remus thought as he looked around the table at their patchwork family. Celeste, Dumo, and his own parents had no doubt spoiled their first grandchild with ‘cusp of adulthood’ gifts, and Natalie and Lily would certainly steal her away after cake for some girl time. Finn and Logan would remain the fun uncles while Leo and Regulus kept their thrones as the cool uncles; Stella would interrogate Jules on the intricacies of high school for at least an hour before they destroyed everyone in a snowball fight. The world they built together had a place for everyone.
I would wish for this. This, for us, forever. It wasn’t a bad eternity to imagine.

Their Aching Firsts.
I still have no excuse for my obsession with them. Not sure how I feel about this particular story, but I wanted to post something for the start of Rivusa week for the hell of it. It’s about 7k words (I apparently can’t stop writing them once I start and their works end up being endless). Oops.
Fair warning, there is a umm *spicy* scene near the end there. I don’t usually write those and I tried to keep it as vague as I could, but I thought I’d mention it anyways. Other than that, enjoy and let me know what you think!
The first times they kissed, it was fueled by anger- he grabbed, she pulled, they crashed.
The first time they talked about it, it wasn't so much a conversation of words as it was one of looks. His eyes said "I want you and it terrifies me." Her eyes said "I think I want you, too. And I think I'm finally ready to admit that."
The first time Musa realized her new favorite jacket was once his, she stares at herself in the mirror for over an hour. She misses lunch with the gang and Riven comes knocking at her door and opens it to find her standing in front of that mirror in a state of awe. She's bathed in black leather, sleeves reaching the tips of her fingertips.
"You ok?" Arms wrap around her waist as she toys with the hem of the jacket. She looks at him through the mirror and smiles.
"I just want you to know I'm never giving this back."
He huffs a laugh as he lets his head fall to her hair, breathing her in. Lavender and something sweet that he's never been able to pinpoint. "Not even if this falls apart?"
She whirls around to face him. "I don't intend on letting that happen." Her hands are on the collar of his shirt, eyes blazing with stubbornness. He knows then that her words are a promise, a commitment and not just a comment in passing.
"I don't know, Muse. You still have time to regret all this. Regret the ruin of your reputation. What will people say?" His words are teasing, but she can see right through them. She senses his vulnerability, his apprehension.
"There are a lot of things I regret in life- yelling at my mother when I was fourteen because I didn't want to clean my room, being a bit of a bitch to my suitemates at the start of the year, hiding instead of fighting because I was too scared to see what my powers could really do. The regrets are endless. But, you, Riven, are not one of them."
He frowns, blinks away the swarm of feelings within  him. "Yeah?"
She bunches her hands on his collar and pulls him down to her mouth. "Yeah."
"And what if I'm the one to end this?"
"And do what? Date some other girl for the hell of it?"
"Maybe, " he grins. "I hear I'm hot on the market now that I'm on the good side." She pulls him all the way down then, kisses him hard.
"Give it a try. Whoever she is, she won't last more than a day. And she'll defiantly never have you. Not really. I have you right where I want you, Riven. You're mine and you know it." She blazes a fire in him with her words.
"Oh yeah? And how would you know that?"
"You're here, aren't you?" She's all sass as she cocks an eyebrow at his question. "And, plus, it's kinda hard to lie to an empath."
And then she's kissing him again. This time with so much passion that he can't make sense of the world around him any longer. She pulls away only to tell him, "And I bet she'll never get that reaction out of you."
"No. No, she won't."
________________________________________________________________
The first time he calls her his girlfriend, it's not exactly in the situation she had imagined.
"Girls, I need to tell you something." Musa's voice wavers slightly as it rises above the noise that is their friends' laughs and chatter.
They're on the roof of Alfea, clustered among one another on the edges of old, shabby stones. The sky above them is dark and heavy. Stars wink at students from behind perfect clouds, ones that Musa remembers seeing in old cartoon movies that she used to watch with her parents when she was younger. From up here, the rest of Alfea seems like their whole world, its students miniature figures in a dollhouse. It's a perfect night, just as it should be. Rosalind is gone, out of the school and although that's not good enough, it's something. And Headmistress Dowling is alive and back in charge of the magical boarding school, where she belongs. From her perch up here, she can make out the headmistress' perfectly done hair as she leans back and laughs at something Silva is saying. She sees Professor Harvey heading towards their table, scolding students along the way to back away from the school's boarders. She's surprised that they haven't tried to stop all the drinking that going on. It seems that even the professors have had enough of the fighting, so much so that they're no longer focusing on the minute details of teenage life. Plus, she suspects that when they called for a party to celebrate the revival of Dowling and their taking back the school, they had fully expected the drinking. In fact, Musa had even seen Silva sneaking a few drinks to the teacher's table, but she'd never tell him that.
She can still hear Terra's squeal when Dowling had announced the party. And she can feel the toll of the  heels Stella had insisted she wear on her feet. It has brought everyone so much joy, this little piece of heaven that they're being allowed, and she's been so very glad to just bask in it. After months of walking around with her headphones constantly on, trying desperately and failing to block the thoughts of despair, gloom, and pain, she welcomed the change. It had taken a lot out of her, but she had even worked up the nerve to leave her headphones behind for the party. The girls had been surprised at first, but then Bloom had stepped forward, wound their arms together, and led her outside the suite. She's been getting weird looks from them all night, little side glances with small smiles and questioning eyes, asking her if she was okay or if she needed to head out for a bit, take a breather. She'd returned them all with reassuring smiles of her own, letting them know that she was fine. And she was fine, but probably not for the reason they thought. Yes, the students around her were happy and she didn’t have much negativity to deal with from them right now, and yes her powers were getting better. But the reason she was doing so well had to do nothing with the students around them or her ability to control her magic and everything to do with the specialist across from her.
Riven and her had been a bit of a dichotomy since the start of her second semester at Alfea. They were paired together for combat classes from the very beginning of Rosalind's reign at Alfea. He'd flirted, as he did with everything that had a pulse and walked his way, and she had shut it down. Odd how that had only encouraged his behavior. Odder how she'd eventually come to appreciate it.
It was a slow transition, their thing. She had been resistant to accept she liked someone so very opposite to her last boyfriend, hesitant to give herself to that natural disaster that seemed to be Riven. Honestly, it seemed like a loss for a long time. She'd lay in bed some nights, staring at her ceiling, listening to Terra's slow breaths as she slept, and just think about the fact that just a few months ago (God, it boggled her mind that it was only a few months ago… where did time go? And how did they get here, in a school run by a once presumed dead war leader and a woman that seemed to exude death from her presence alone?) she had been perfectly happy with Sam and the silence that he brought. Sure, they had eventually called it quits once she had realized she couldn't live in silence forever and he realized she needed to learn to shield herself from harm. It had been tough, but they were friends. And she had been okay being single again. Truly, she had. So how she'd come to crave noise- his noise, loud and obnoxious emotions that sent her body tingling and her mind reeling- she doesn't know. But it had happened and once she's finally just accepted it, the ball was in his court. Too bad for her though, because just as hesitant as she was, Riven was ten times more resistant to the pull that existed between the two of them. Musa remembers all the nights they'd sneak out and he'd teach her new moves with a staff and sometimes he'd let her use his swords, teasing her as she struggled under their weight. She'd head back to her suite before the sun came up, always frustrated because couldn't he see?! Couldn't he tell? Why else would she show up every single night without fail? Why else would she stick around when the training turned to teasing and taunting turned to conversations in hushed tones? Long story short, it took him being under mind control and her breaking it for him to just finally, finally kiss her. And from then on, it had been secret meetings in different corners of the school, in their rooms when no one else was around, and anywhere else they could find some privacy.
She's itching to cross the space that separates them currently and slip her arms under his jacket, an action that she'd first done on instinct but which had quickly become a habit once she had realized the effect it had on him. She's been eyeing him the whole night, fully aware of his gaze on her. There's a reason she hadn't argued with Stella when she'd been handed the lavender slip of a dress that she currently wore. She'd even managed to forgive the light fairy for the strappy silver heels she had practically forced into Musa's feet when she caught Riven staring up and down her bare legs.
"Musa? What is it? Are you ok?"
Bloom's worried tone pulls her back to reality and she forces herself to face away from Riven and toward the girls. She'd avoided this conversation for so long, but it had to come out at some point tonight and it had to happened before one of the girls found them in some shady corner with their clothes half off.
"Oh, no I'm fine! It's not that." Now, how to approach what it actually was?
Aisha's confused tone follows her reply, "Well, then, what is it?"
"Um, it's kind of a little complicated…" Musa's voice trails off and she has to physically stop herself from turning back to Riven to see if he's ok with this, with what she's about to say.
"Musa you're freaking me out a little here," Stella's eyes narrow at Musa's fidgeting her hands. Huh, she hadn't even noticed herself playing with the hem of her dress.
"Oh no! Did you actually kill that poor guy that tried to hit on you?" Terra sounds worried as Musa just groans at her words.
"Ughhh. Terra, we said we wouldn't talk about that."
"What guy?" Riven's question comes at the same moment as her whine, except his is louder and much more aggressive. All heads turn to him, and Musa curses the jealousy that she feels coursing through his veins right now. Damn it, couldn't he just keep it in long enough so she could explain to her suitemates what the hell was going on between them? His eyes are all rage and warning as he stares Terra down. And for some reason, she's all worked up at his gaze and doesn't know what to do with herself. She really shouldn't be so attracted to this side of him.
"What's it matter to you?" Aisha questions, eyebrow raising in his direction.
"It just does."
"Really, Riven? The middle school comeback? Classic."
"Stay out of it, Aisha. I wasn't talking to you."
They're bickering back and forth, and Musa can sense both their patience straining. This is not how she was hoping this would go. Finally, she steps between them, one hand on Aisha's shoulder and the other on Riven's chest. "Ok, that's enough."
Aisha glares his way one more time but steps back, Riven does not.  Instead, he turns to Musa and asks her, "What guy, Musa?"
"It doesn't matter, Riven."
"It does to me."
"Well, it shouldn't. It was just some drunk dude with a bad haircut. That's it." She's trying to reassure him, to let him know that this thing they have going on isn't just something she's going to drop the first chance she gets for any guy that makes eyes her way. She knows that's one of his big insecurities. He has it in his head that he's not good enough to deserve this, something that isn't completely fucked up from the very beginning.
They're trading glances, a secret conversation of their own  happening between them.
"No!"
All heads snap toward Bloom. The second she turns around, Musa knows that her redheaded roommate has figured it out. Bloom is grinning at the two of them, practically bouncing on her heels as she grabs onto Sky's arm and tugs on it. "Did you know about this?! Why didn't you tell me?!"
Sky (bless his soul) looks at his girlfriend with confusion evident in his face, "Know what?"
Except it's Stella that answers, "They're dating."
And then mayhem ensues and Musa suddenly wishes she had thought this through because she's feeling so much from so many people right now and she's not quite sure how to handle it. She tries to hide the wince that forms on her face as she tries to answer all the questions her friends are practically screaming her way, but Riven must have noticed it because he reaches for her hand and pulls her out of the circle the girls have formed around her and closer to him.
"Alight, that's enough." It's the rasp in his voice that sends her spiraling every time he speaks, and she's putty in his hands. It's pathetic, she should have more self-control than this. "Yes, we're dating. Yes, she's my girlfriend. And, Aisha, no I did not pay her or threaten her into it. Gods above!" He takes a sweep of the room, gesturing to all their friends with a hand as if to say 'you're all very welcome.'
"Any other questions?" No one speaks up. Not that Musa would have heard any of them because good gods, did she hear him right? Did he just say what she thinks he said? Is she his… girlfriend? They'd avoided so many labels for so long that it had completely slipped her mind to actually name this thing between then by the time that they had finally become something substantial. And she's been fine with that deal, with not having to name their relationship, but hearing him call her his girlfriend has send her body trembling, fire coursing through her veins and butterflies bursting in her stomach.
And then he's pulling her away, down the stairs that led them up to the roof and between hallways that blend into one another as her mind focuses on the way his hand grips hers and the lust (his? hers?) that seems to be engulfing her whole being.
She lets him lead her into his room, onto his bed, and just as he leans down to kiss her, she moves down and places a kiss on his neck instead. Looking up at him, she tests out the word that's taken over her brain since it left his lips, "Girlfriend?"
"Fuck. Is that not what this is? I, I don't know- I kind of figured- I don't know. Shit, sorry-" If she wasn't so very in love with the idea of being his girlfriend, his something (just his), she would have let his ramble continue. She didn't get to see this often, a flustered Riven, and it was a sight she found quite adorable. But, alas, she had other plans for tonight.
She bends her neck upward, uses her toes to push herself up the bed, and kisses him ever so lightly on the lips. Just enough so that he stops talking. A feather's whisper of a kiss, against which she purrs "That is exactly what this is if that's what you want it to be."
His eyes are black with want when he closes them and his hand comes up to trace the edges of her jaw. His breathing speeds up as he leans his forehead against hers, and that's how she knows he's trying to collect his thoughts, watching his words as he often does when he's scared he's about to make the wrong move, say the wrong thing. She swears she's going to get him to stop doing that around her, because she wants his thoughts, every single one of them, as raw as they are. She doesn't want the filtered version. And she can feel them, mingling into the background as his insecurity takes over. Her hands find their way to his jaw and now they're holding each other, "Tell me."
He opens his eyes, opens his mouth to tell her, just as she knew he would. He'd never deny her anything and she's learned that in the short time that they've been together. He'd collect the stars and fashion them into a necklace she could wear around her neck if she asked for the universe. He'd start and end a war if she so much as suggested it. He'd give her his soul, she thinks. All she needs to do is ask, and he breaks for her. Crack by crack. Splinter by splinter. Until he's cleaved wide open and she sees all of him.
"I do, want that. I want you." His voice is gruff, guttural. "What about you? What do you want?"
God, how does he still not get it?!
"You." A whisper, and then a kiss.
_______________________________________________________________
The first time he makes her cry, it's not because of something he said. It's because of something he did.
It had started like any other day- breakfast, classes, social gatherings at the end of the afternoon. Musa and Terra had just left botany lessons and were heading towards the specialists training grounds to meet up with Sky and Riven before they all went to grab dinner together. It had been all fun and games, Terra and her grumbling about how ravished they were and laughing along at each other's comments. But Musa had sensed the uneasiness that radiated from the training grounds the second they had rounded the corner of Alfea's large lawns. Silva was especially on edge, and the fact that he had all the upperclassmen and the best of the specialists lined up as he walked back and forth between them shouting orders could not be a good sign. And with an insane mastermind on the loose, Musa had feared the worst as anyone else would. She'd taken off running, and Terra had followed without any questions, trusting her instincts.
She only caught glimpses of Silva's orders. "… Five burned ones… Two upperclassmen faries out there already… We need to leave now- I'm going to need ten of you out ASAP. Five more will guard the school grounds… Any volunteers?"
Her heart stopped when in her peripheral vision, she saw Sky and Riven's hands go up. This would be the third one this month that they had volunteered for, and the last time they left the school grounds Riven came back with a broken foot that he's still limping along on. The word left her mouth before she could think about it, "No!"
He turned to her, surprised to find her standing among the specialists. "Musa?"
She can't be bothered to greet him, not right now, not when he's practically signing up for his own death. So, instead, she stares him straight in the eye and says it again. "No."
But Riven is as stubborn as she is, and she knows he's been itching to prove himself again, to make up for what he did under the control of Rosalind just a short while ago. His words crush her soul, "I volunteer for the outside team." He's talking to Silva, who's eyeing the two of them with an intrigued look on his face. He nods curtly at Riven's words. But Riven is looking at her, his jaw set and tilted upward with determination.
"Alright, Sky and Riven, you'll lead the charge. Get your weapons. We leave in five minute. Go!" And then he and Sky are running toward their weapons bags, Musa and Terra hot on their tracks.
She catches up to him just as he's strapping on his swords. Her hand comes to pull at his wrist, motioning for him to face her.
"Are you fucking kidding me right now?" He won't look at her, won't meet her eyes. "Riven, I'm talking to you! You can't just volunteer yourself up for everything that could kill you! What the fuck is wrong with you?! Whatever you're trying to prove, stop it!"
He's reaching for his fighting boots, switching into them. Whether he's just not listening or if he just doesn't care, she can't tell. She wants to kill him. She wants to kiss him.
"Please," she can't believe she's begging. "Please, Riven. Your foot. You can't-"
"I'm doing it, Musa." She sees fury, internalizes it before her insides form it into something tangible and she can see it, feel it. It's red and blinding and raging.
"I'm asking you not to." He won't say no to her, he hasn't done it yet. She asks and he cracks for her right? Right?
Wrong.
"LET'S GO, SQUADRON 1!" She barely registers what Silva's command means until Riven is standing up.
"I'm sorry, Musa." And she knows he means it, because when his hands fall to her shoulders, quick and rushed, they're firm. He leans down to kiss her goodbye or as a form of apologizing, she's not sure, but she turns her head away from him and he ends up kissing the space between her cheek and jawline. If he won't look at her, then she won't look at him. And if he won't listen to her, then she won't give him the satisfaction of her approval. It's petty, she know that. She senses his emotions deflate at her actions, the feeling of rejection cutting into his heart like a shard of glass ripping through flesh. But she's seen this movie before, she knows how this story ends. Too many specialists have left the school's walls wounded and eager to pick a fight, only to come back on the brink of death or even worse, they haven't come back at all. And the idea of him becoming one of those statistics hurts more for her than her rejection will ever hurt him.
She doesn't turn to watch him leave, but she hears his boots beating against the pavement as he rushes to catch up with Sky… and then silence.
She's so numb by now. Numb to death, to feeling, to crying. She doesn't cry. Not when Terra comes to hug her from behind. Not when they're back in the suite and Bloom is practically sizzling with anger at the fact that they didn't think to bring her along on the mission and that Sky is being sent on yet another mission. Not when it's midnight and Dowling informs that the specialists made it back safely.
She doesn't go down to greet them when the other girls rush out the door. Terra lingers in the doorway.
"You sure you don’t want to come?"
"I'm good." She's staring outside the huge window of their living room, refusing to look down at the ground and try to make out if someone is missing in the mass of specialists standing in the courtyard.
"Musa-" She feels pity and worry coming from Terra, and she doesn't want to deal with it right now. She just wants to be numb for a little while longer.
"I said, I'm good."
Once Terra is gone, she turns away from the window and goes to sit by one of the couches. She counts the floorboards by the main doorway of the Winx suite. One, two, three, four, five, six…
She counts them three times over before the door finally barges open, it's hinges creaking from the immense force of the push just enacted upon it.
Riven's eyes frantically search the room before they finally fall on her. He walks towards her, limps actually. (She knew his foot wasn't healed, no matter how much he insisted it was.) He has blood splattered on his right side. His or someone else's, who knows? And when he finally reaches her, and falls to his knees in front of her so that they're eye level with one another, she finally cries.
He reaches for her. She pushed him off. "Fuck you, Riven. Really, fuck you."
"I'm sorry. Muse, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. I-"
"Why don't you ever listen? You keep walking into wars as if they're welcoming parties. Do you want to die?! Do you have a death wish? What the fuck is wrong with you?!" She's being mean, unfair. She doesn't care. If asking won't work, maybe screaming will. And she's exhausted. Exhausted of worrying about him every time he leaves. Exhausted of wishing he would listen. Exhausted of fearing he's the one that didn't make it back, because it's almost been him so many times by now.
"I had to Musa." His voice is soft, odd in comparison to the loud tone he usually takes when they argue about this topic.
"You always have to! You don't have to prove anything Riven. And you most certainly don’t have to die for no fucking reason!"
"You don't get it-"
"So explain it to me!" He sighs deeply, and closes his eyes. "No, Riven. Explain it. What don't I get?"
He finally opens his eyes, throws a string of colorful swears at the ceiling before moving his gaze back to her. "It's not just proving something. It's that if I go and… if I go, then one less specialist has to go. And that's one less person with people that care about them having to go. And that's one less tragic death, and then a whole lot less people hurt. If I go… who cares, you know? And, honestly, shouldn't it be me? A taste of my own medicine and all that. After all the shit I helped Rosalind do." She senses his bitterness, feels his anger and destitute.
He's an idiot.
"You're an idiot, you know that?"
"And you're beautiful," he quips back. She watches that smirk that she's come to love make its way onto his face.
"Flattery won't get you very far in life, Riv." Except, maybe it will. Because somehow and for some reason she's here, and she's crying over him.
It's like he can read her mind, not the other way around, "I think it's gotten me pretty far as of right now. I mean, you're here." The look he gives her has her twitching in her seat and she has to remind herself that she still has more to say to him. She can't just let him off the hook that easily. He leans up to kiss her, and she places her hands on his chest, gently pushing him away.
 "I care."
"What?" He's confused by her words.
"I care. If you go, and something happens. I care." She feels the surprise bloom from within him, and then a sense of overwhelming tenderness takes up his mind, and hers along with it. Her hands reach for him, " Come here."
This time, he obeys her. And as she kisses him, he cracks for her. Splinters for her. Lets her see him while he kisses her as if he's kissing her for the first time ever, ravaged and hungry for her. She sees it all- all of him falling into her and consequentially falling into place in her mind, in her heart. His insecurities, his fears, and his wishes. She doesn't shy away from him, but kisses him harder. His thoughts are exactly what she thought they were from the very beginning- a natural disaster. But she doesn't fear falling into them anymore, and in fact she thinks she likes them. She thinks she likes the way his mind works- ten emotions at one time battling to win out over one another. And when he pulls away, she likes the way his green eyes look at her like she's the whole world and the way his hands hold her tight enough for her to know that he doesn't think she's fragile but with enough care that she feels like she is all that he owns.
"Don't you ever," he's panting as he moves to place kisses along her jaw and at her collarbone, above her shoulders, anywhere the collar of her shirt will allow him. "Don't you ever pull away from me again."
She knows he's referring to the other afternoon, when he had left for the mission and she had closed off. "Why? Did I hurt your fragile ego?"
She's teasing, he's not. His hands are in her shirt and moving up, up, up until the offending piece of clothing is off of her. He's eager to kiss down her body, hands roaming the planes and curves that he must have memorized by now. He's kissing, kissing, kissing. Kissing away her tears, kissing right above her beating heart, kissing along her waistline. Frantic, needy, and-
Oh.
Oh. She thinks she's in love.
________________________________________________________________
The first time they slow down, she feels as though she has seen heaven.
Riven's lips on her lips, steady and firm yet gentle, as his hands lay splayed over her bare sides and his thumbs dig softly into the dips of her hipbones. One of her legs is tangled in the sheets around them and her other is hiked up above his hips, her heel digging into his spine. He moves inside of her, and when she feels her hips meet his, she slides her hands over his shoulders and lets her nails graze his back. He watches her below him, eyes asking if she's ok, she smiles at him and says, "Just… stay. Don't move for a bit."
And he does, closing the small space between them to catch her bottom lip between his teeth and pull on it before he continues with his love bites down her neck, behind her ears, onto her chest. He's making his way as far down as he can in their current position, and she's melting into him and fuck, she wants him to keep going. But she also wants him to slow down because she's on cloud nine right now and from up here she can see the stars in his eyes, can catch them between the kisses of his lips. Her hands move from his back, leaving behind what she can only assume is a mass of fresh red marks. They move to his chin as she drags him back up to meet her on that very cloud and then they're eye-level with one another once more. She feels the want form within him, she always does, but it’s an odd thing to actually see it emulated in his eyes. And there's something else there too, something she can't quite place and doesn't dare to assume of. When his lips brush hers for the umpteenth time, slowly shaping her name between them, she feels herself sink farther into him, a feat she had previously deemed impossible.
And her lips part in a whimper because oh good god, how had they never done this before? They were always so rushed, pulling at each other's clothes and stumbling into bed,  falling into one another in a tangled mess of limbs and lust. Perhaps it was the fact that they had kept it in for so long, refusing to admit they liked each other and once they were together, not wanting to tell others for fear of shattering whatever fragile state they were in. Their relationship had started with fighting fueled by longing, innuendos charged with so many suggestions, and eventually an aching want that Musa still couldn’t wrap her mind around. Really, she shouldn't be surprised at how touch hungry the two of them had been at the beginning of the relationship. (How touch hungry they still were.) But right here in this moment, as she opens her eyes, she regrets not slowing down and taking him all in sooner.
He is a sight to behold, with tiny and larger scrapes all over his body that somehow added to his physique instead of taking away from it. They are tens of thousands of stars and she traces them over and over, forming constellations with his imperfections. The pads of her fingers run over the features of his face, committing every bit of him to memory, and as they skim the tiny scar above his left eyebrow, the question slips from her lips before she can stop herself.
"When did you get this one?"
He pulls away from her, just slightly so that he can see her face, and his eyes are darker than she's ever seen them as he lazily responds with a "Hmm?"
She's high on want and adrenaline, but she vaguely wonders if this is something he might not want to talk about. Too late to back out now. Plus, she'd like to know. "This scar. Above your eyebrow. How did you get it?"
Riven stiffens at her answer. She can feel his insecurity downing upon him, clouded by the desire and the want that still course through his body but slowly easing its way to the forefront of the battle that is his mind.
"I have them too," Musa whispers as she braces herself against his chest and heaves her body upward, brushing her lips against that very scar in question.
She moves back down again, and pulls her left arm slowly away from under him. She turns her head slightly to her left shoulder, using her index finger to point to a sliver of skin that's more taught and whiter than the rest of her. "I got this one when I was twelve. Tried to climb a tree that was too high off the ground. Had to get six stiches. My mom freaked out."
His eyeline follows her movements, and he stares at her shoulder for a few minutes. His gaze has her squirming a little, suddenly aware that she's naked in front of a boy she's very much into and that she has just pointed out one of the many flaws on her body. But then his eyes flicker upwards and he leans down and kisses her scar, just as she had kissed his.
"You're fucking perfect, you know that right?" She could cry.
"If you're trying to get in my pants, hate to break it to you, but they're already off," she teases, her voice soft and a smile on her lips. How else was she meant to respond?
He chuckles at her words, his laugh causing her to catch her breath as it does each and every time she hears it. It's an occasion that has become more common since they got together but which is still far and few in between. The sound vibrates off his body onto hers and has her writhing under him.
"Love, I would never consider your lack of garments a disappointment." He circles his hips above her, and she groans at the pressure. "And I would most certainly never forget being the one to take them off you, especially when you insist on making those noises."
Her eyes are blown wide as she grabs onto his forearm at the side of her head, where his fingers are buried in her hair. Her chest heaves up and down, up and down, heart beating so fast she's certain its rhythms are all in her mind and that it's no longer there. She's fairly sure she lost it somewhere between meeting him and getting here, to this moment.
He stops his teasing, opting instead to arch down once more and kiss the scar on her shoulder. He kisses it over and over until she feels her heartbeat slow down and her breath return to a somewhat normal pacing.
She tugs on his locks, silently motioning for him to come back up. Up he comes, and she's glad that she's somehow convinced him to continue denying her nothing.
"Tell me."
He knows she's referring to his scar.
They're nose to nose, foreheads touching, brown eyes boring into green ones.
"About a year and a half ago. Right when things started to get messy in my life. Messier than usual, I mean. Back then I was a bit of a nerd, hung out in the greenhouse all the time-"
"Yeah, I've heard a few stories from Terra," she cuts him off, a smile playing on her lips at the idea of Riven hunched over a lab bench with pretty vines all around him.  It's a sight she hopes to one day see with her own two eyes, a side of him she knows she's so very close to opening up.
"Yeah, well, I'm sure you know how much of a dick I was after I started distancing myself from them. Sky, he got real mad one day. We were in Specialism class, learning some new sword tricks. I said some shitty things and then he tried to play the Saint Sky card. I got mad, I fought dirty. Scraped his arm with the sword. He finally snapped at me, landed a good blow right above my eyebrow." He laughed a bitter laugh at the memory. "Nearly missed my eye, the wanker. He apologized for two months straight. Either way, we both ended up in the infirmary and I figured I couldn't get rid of him. He kept me around and I stayed, almost like when we were children and we fought over dumb shit like who was the taller. Only difference now is that his scar healed and mine stayed."
That last sentence was loaded with so much, and Musa wanted to ask more but she didn't want to push her luck. She smiled at him, nudging his nose with hers. "So you used to fight over who was taller? The mental image of a baby Sky and baby Riven getting angry over something like that is almost, dare I say, adorable?"
He scoffs. "We were not adorable! We were two very manly twelve-year-olds with very some very manly, very reasonable arguments."
"Mmm," she hums against his skin. "Is that what you two have to this day? Manly arguments?"
"Are we really bringing Sky into the conversation while we're in bed?" She laughs, a full on laugh that comes from within her because his words were not what she had expected. "If you must know, now we argue over who’s got the hotter girlfriend."
His eyes are all mischief when she shakes her head at him. "Glad to see you two have really grown up."
"And I'm glad that I got the hotter girlfriend, because I'm not sure how else you've managed to keep me completely turned on while bringing up my best friend in the middle of us fucking."
And then it's her turn to tease him, turning her head slightly to the side so that she can catch his earlobe between her teeth and whisper in his ear. "I'll make it up to you."
And then she's flipping them over so that she's on top and she feels his breath catch. She smirks down at him mischievously and then they're off again, finishing what they started. She makes sure to go slow, to feel every bit of him as she moves, catch every angle of him below her and store it in her mind for safekeeping.
And when it's over and he's lying on his stomach, back facing the ceiling, she moves herself on top of him once more. Only this time, she kisses every scar on his body, sometimes asking where and how he got them until he finally gets the hint and starts sharing their stories before she can even ask. There are so many of them, some tiny and some much more noticeable. All of them have stories. She vows to herself that she will one day know all of them. That she will be there to soothe the next scrape, the next trauma. With each one of her kisses, she can feel the natural disaster within him reach a rhythm, not quite silenced but at peace.
They don't sleep that night. Only once she's sure she's kissed every inch of his body does she finally worm her way back into his arms, but they're both wide awake at that point. His eyes watch her in the dark, hair loose and splayed around them like some sort of blanket. It had been in pigtails at one point in the night.
"What are you thinking about?" she asks.
"I…I just," words knot in his mouth. His eyebrows furrow at her in frustration as he tries to untangle and spell them out for her. "God, I love you."
Just for that, she kisses his body all over again. And again. And again.
________________________________________________________________
Their first times have been nothing short of unexpected. It's never how either of them imagined all these firsts would go. They're not soft and tender, though there are moments like that in-between, but neither had expected that. Their raging passions did not allow for it. But what they had expected was a lot more arguing, a lot more push and pull. Instead, they seemed to somehow fall right into each other- crash and burn style, no holding back.
Their firsts were painful lessons that needed to be learned. They were gnawing pains that needed to be had, throbbing emotions that had to be felt and delt with. They were stinging feelings, these firsts- stinging because they felt too much too soon and too fast and neither knew what to do with all of that expect for let it bubble until it exploded before them in an aching manner.
Their aching firsts.

Here’s episode 5 “Midsummers”!
“Dude—Mom catches you out here, and you’re dead.” Stella peeked one eye open, catching sight of her sister standing over her, arms crossed over her chest and eyebrows raised. “You’re literally out in the open.”
Kie’s concern came from the pen Stella was currently twirling between her fingers as she lay on the ground in their backyard. Stella didn’t say anything, instead took another pull from the pen, letting the familiar smoke invade her lungs before blowing it out slowly. The act did its job in calming her down, and Kiara let out a sigh before shifting to sit down next to Stella, before going down on her back, too.
Stella could feel her sister’s gaze on her as Kie turned her head to look at her, but Stella kept her gaze up at the sky. It was sort of cloudy, but there wasn’t a threat for rain. If there had been, the celebration later tonight would’ve been rescheduled ages ago.
“Look, I know you’re worried about JJ—” Kie began, but Stella cut her off.
“He willingly let himself get arrested for something he didn’t do, and he has a drug-addict, abusive dad to go back home to. We haven’t heard from him yet.” Stella looked at Kie, then, jaw hard. “Of course I’m worried.”
Kie’s gaze was soft with sympathy, but Stella could see her own concern swimming, too. After all, Kie cared about JJ as well. Maybe not in the way Stella did, but just as good. “He’ll turn up,” Kie assured. “He always does.”
Despite Kie’s efforts, Stella wasn’t all that comforted. And maybe Kie saw the deep worry that had etched itself into Stella’s features, because Kie’s face softened even more, looking at her sister gently as she asked, “What’s going on?”
Stella’s throat worked as her heart drummed in her chest, forcing herself into a sitting position while Kie kept on her back, looking up at her. For a moment, Stella hesitantly chewed on her lower lip, wondering if now was the right time to indulge, but it was Kie. It was her sister, and if Stella couldn’t tell her, she couldn’t tell anyone.
“JJ and I kissed.” There. She said it. Now it was out in the open.
Kie blinked once before her eyes widened almost comically, shooting up in a sitting position opposite of Stella as she demanded, “What? When?”
“Yesterday,” Stella admitted, stomach flipping as memories of her and JJ’s actions played through her mind like her favorite movie. She couldn’t stop the small smile from playing on her lips. “We were at John B’s, before coming to the summer series.” She fiddled with the pen between her fingers. “It just—it kind of just happened.”
Kie scoffed with a shake of her head. “It didn’t kind of just happen,” she mocked. “This has been waiting to happen for so Goddamn long.” Stella tried not to laugh at the happiness shining in Kie’s eyes, which did a lot to relax Stella. She’d been worried Kie would ram on her for breaking one of their friend group rules, but Kie seemed anything but disappointed. Her eyes widened then, shoulders lifting. “Oh, shit, John B and Pope owe me twenty bucks!”
Stella blinked. “I’m sorry—what?”
Kie snickered, looking all too delighted. “We kind of had a bet going on over how long it’d take for you and JJ to get together.” Stella’s eyes widened, jaw dropping in disbelief. “I bet it’d happen before Midsummers and would you look at that! You just made me forty bucks richer, sis.”
“Wha—” Stella cut herself off with a scoff, ripping up some grass before tossing it at Kie. She shrieked through a laugh, jerking back before brushing away the pieces of grass. “Are you kidding me?! You guys bet on us?”
“Of course we did,” Kie responded with a smirk, not at all looking apologetic. At Stella’s gaping expression, she rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on, Stel. You two have been dancing around each other for so fucking long. We were getting tired of waiting, so we thought we’d have some fun with it,” she finished with a shrug.
Stella couldn’t believe what she was hearing, cheeks heating up at the information. She wasn’t mad or upset that her sister and friends bet on when she and JJ would get together—she was just surprised, and a little bit amused. She wondered how long the bet had been going on for. But instead of asking that, she instead inquired, “So I’m guessing JJ and I are in the clear for breaking the no Pogue-on-Pogue macking rule?”
Kie waved her off, smile still in place. “You two are the exception to the rule,” she said confidently before crossing her legs and shooting Stella an expectant look. “So? Tell me how it was.” She quickly held a hand up. “But not too many details because it’s JJ and he’s like my brother and, ew, gross. But I still wanna know! How’d it happen?”
At that, the heat in Stella’s cheeks intensified into a fire as she recalled every single detail from yesterday—as if she could ever forget. “I was, uh, persuading him to come to the summer series with us.”
Kie’s eyebrows shot up. “Persuading, huh?” she repeated with an impish grin, prompting Stella to let out a giggle. “Well, looks like it worked. Not that I’m surprised. That boy is stupid for you.”
Stella pressed her lips together to keep her giddy smile from widening. “Stop.”
Kie snickered. “Man, you two are gonna be unbearable now, aren’t you? All over each other all of the time.”
“Dude, I don’t even know what we’re doing,” Stella instantly responded with a shake of her head. “All we did was kiss. We’re not suddenly together, Kie.”
She didn’t look convinced. “Only a matter of time.”
Stella’s heart fluttered in her chest. Of course she wanted to be with JJ—it was all she could think about for so long. After that kiss, it was closer to being a reality than she could ever imagine, but they needed to talk about it, first. “Maybe. But first he needs to let us know he’s okay and that his dad didn’t fucking kill him.”
Her words were tight in her throat as she said them, sending a new jolt of worry through her. JJ never really talked about it, but she knew the kind of man his dad was, knew what he was capable of. JJ getting arrested wasn’t going to go over well; it wouldn’t with any parent, but God only knew how Luke Maybank would react to it. So, yeah, Stella was sick with worry over JJ, and she just fucking wished he’d call or text her back.
Kie sighed. “Listen, maybe—”
Whatever Kie was about to say was interrupted by their mother’s voice shouting at them from the back porch. “Girls! Get in here! You need to start getting ready.” Simultaneously, both Stella and Kie threw their heads back and groaned, loudly—loud enough for Mrs. Carrera to hear them. “I don’t wanna hear it! Get your butts in here now!”
They stood up, and as Stella shoved her pen in the pocket of her shorts, Kie grumbled, “I hate everything.”
While every other soul on Figure Eight either was overjoyed to be attending Midsummers or envious that they couldn’t, Stella and Kiara were probably the only ones who hated the party. For Kie, it was more of a socialist thing that Stella respected her for, but she also knew that her sister’s disgust with Midsummers, ultimately, existed for the same reason as Stella’s: they hated the people they were surrounded by.
All of the Kooks would be gathered tonight for the party—this year a celebration for Ward Cameron, A.K.A the father of Sarah Cameron, Kie’s worst enemy. Stella didn’t care what the party was for—she despised it. The most Stella liked to dress up was in clothes of her choice, and sure that could sometimes include make-up and dresses, but not full on evening gowns with flowers in her hair. It often felt like she was getting dressed up as a lamb for a slaughter, being pushed into a crowd of Kooks who thought they were better than everyone else because of their overflowing pockets. The adults were bad enough—Stella did not want to even see the people her age.
Namely Rafe, Topper, Kelce, and anyone who was associated with them. Especially after what they did to JJ and Pope yesterday. Dicks.
But Midsummers, much to both Stella and Kie’s chagrin, was important to their parents, especially their mother. So as soon as the two girls returned inside the house, Mrs. Carrera was ushering them towards the bathrooms, like they were toddlers who needed supervised bath times.
“Hold on a second—” Mr. Carrera paused, and Stella and Kie exchanged looks when their mom sniffed the air around them. Her eyes then zeroed in on Stella, hands on her hips and eyes blazing as she demanded, “Did you just smoke, Stella?”
Knowing there was no point in lying, Stella huffed. “I needed something to take the edge off if I have to go to this stupid party.”
This wasn’t the first time their mom caught them smoking or smelling of weed, but it pissed her off just the same. While Kie tried to stifle a smile, Mrs. Carrera glared daggers at her Stella. “You’re not getting out of this, Stella. You better drown yourself in body wash and perfume when you get ready.”
Stella rolled her eyes behind her mom’s back, but listened all the same, albeit reluctantly. Kie was the first to hop into the shower in their shared bathroom, so Stella took the time to lay in her bed and unlock her phone, hoping to see a text or missed call from JJ. Her heart jumped when she saw just one text from him, chest tight as she read it quickly.
JJ: Don’t worry about me. I’m good. I’ll see u later.
That was it. Just ten words of reassurance and then nothing. Part of Stella was relieved to have received anything from him at all, but another part still felt worried and a little annoyed. She—all of them—had been worried sick over him after yesterday, and this was all he could say? Stella figured she shouldn’t be too surprised. It was typical JJ behavior. He got in a bind and somehow got himself out of it, and never really let his friends in on if anything was wrong. But the tough guy persona could only get him so far.
Chewing on her lower lip, Stella drafted a text, but not to JJ. Instead, she sent a message to John B.
Stella: You heard from JJ? Do you think he’s okay?
John B responded within moments.
John B: Yeah, it’s all good. I’m with him right now. We’ll see you guys tonight, alright? Keep an eye out.
Stella blinked at the cryptic message, wondering what the hell he was talking about. But if recent circumstances were any indicator, something was probably going down tonight. Stella’s stomach flipped in both apprehension and excitement. These boys might be the death of her.
Soon enough, Kie was out of the bathroom and it was Stella’s turn. She showered and brushed her teeth, stepping back into her room to catch sight of a satin slip dress with a halter neck waiting for her on her bed. It was a pretty golden color with a V-neck trimmed with lace, and a pair of white and gold sandals were waiting by the bed, too. Stella huffed, the towel wrapped tightly around her. She knew for a fact that her mother thought she needed to have everything out for her otherwise Stella would be useless in getting dressed for Midsummers. It was kind of insulting.
Stella expertly dried her hair, letting the natural curls come into place, before doing her makeup. She kept it light, as always, because not even Midsummers was going to make her slap on a face full of makeup, especially in the middle of summer. Some foundation, mascara, highlighter, and lipstick was as far as she went, with her jewelry consisting of a dainty diamond star necklace and the rings on her fingers.
“Oh, good, you’re dressed,” Mrs. Carrera said upon entering her room. “Come on, let me do your hair.”
Stella frowned but listened, sitting down in front of her dresser while her mom stood behind her. She worked quickly and efficiently, braiding back the two front locks of her hair and intertwining small yellow flowers in them that Stella tried not to wrinkle her nose at.
As her mom worked, Kie wandered into Stella’s room. Her slip dress was spaghetti strapped and a lavender color, a couple of layered necklaces around her neck, and her hair down in an updo with a crown of pink and purple flowers and locks of curly hair framing her face. She looked stunning, even with that scowl she wore as she stormed into the room.
“This is disgusting,” she announced without preamble.
Mrs. Carrera wove another flower into Stella’s braid, her voice dry above her as she responded, “I know. It’s just horrible. I’m asking you two to relax and go to a fun party.”
Kie scoffed, towering over their mom. They may be twins, but Kie somehow got the tall gene from their dad, standing at the elegant 5’8”, while Stella hadn’t grown past 5’5”. “We look like bourgeoisie pigs.”
Stella tried to keep the snort from escaping, covering it up with a cough as their mom finally patted down Stella’s hair, letting out a satisfied hum before stepping back. She shot Kie an exasperated look and said, “Will you please not worry about socioeconomic injustice for one night?”
Kie scowled and Stella’s face scrunched up. This was so much more than that. She twisted around in the seat and stood up, crossing her arms and siding with Kie, “Mom, people not three miles from here have no power, no running water—and we’re going to Midsummers.”
Kie nodded vigorously, gesturing to Stella. “That’s so tone deaf.”
Mrs. Carrera huffed, picking up the little pouch she’d dropped on the dressing table and pulling out the diamond earrings. As she put one in, she said, “Do you know how hard we had to work to get into the Island Club?”
Both Stella and Kie rolled their eyes, having heard this a hundred times before. “Yeah, Mom, how could we forget?” Stella sighed. “You had to grovel for, like, ten years—”
“Twelve,” Mrs. Carrera corrected, “and we also had to cough up a huge chunk of dough, and do you know why we did that?”
Kie wasn’t impressed. “To keep up with the Joneses?”
Mrs. Carrera’s hands were on her hips, looking at her daughter pointedly. “No. So you two could have the experiences that I had as a child. Sweethearts, do you know what the Island Club is?”
“A factory farm for debutantes,” Kie flatly said at the same time Stella said, “Where brain cells go to die.”
Kie gave her a subtle fist bump as their mother glared at them before smiling exasperatedly. She placed one hand on each of their cheeks, looking at both of them as she said, “It is a nice place, with nice people, where you can do fun stuff.”
Neither of them bought the company line. “With out of touch rich people,” Stella added.
Kie rightfully finished, “While the island sinks slowly into the ocean.”
Their mom dropped her hands from their cheeks, stepping back and shooting them a look. Clearly, she was done trying with her stubborn daughters. “Okay, I want you two to put on your party faces if you wanna live,” she said before walking out of the room.
Both Stella and Kie sighed, looking at each other in resigned defeat. Stella picked up her pen, offering a half hearted smile. “Wanna take a hit before we go?”
Kie scoffed, taking it from her. “Or maybe ten.”
Less than fifteen minutes later, the girls were at the Island Club with their parents, and instead of doing the polite thing and greeting the other party goers, Stella spotted a familiar face and grabbed Kie’s hand, jerking her chin to where Pope was working out on the lawn at the grill. She’d almost forgotten that he was working the party with his dad. Thank God for small miracles.
As they approached him, his back to the girls, Kie startled Stella by speaking in a terrible British accent, “Excuse me, sir. Do we have to shuck these ourselves?” Pope swiveled around as Kie grinned and Stella shook her head in bemusement. “’Cause it might mess up my costume.”
Pope chuckled. “We wouldn’t want that now, would we?” he asked and Stella stepped forward with a laugh, slapping her hand against his, front and back, before ending with a snap of her fingers. Their handshake. As he repeated the act with Kie, Pope added, “That accent was bad.”
Kie nodded. “It was. I was gonna let it go.”
Stella scoffed. “I wish you had,” she said as they came to stand next to Pope, arms folded across her chest. The three of them observed the scene before them, of all the guests gathered around in their fancy dresses and suits, drinking from flutes of champagne or drinks from the bar. “You ever seen this many Kooks in one place?”
“Yeah. Last year,” Pope answered.
Kie was squinting against the sun, but just like Stella’s, her brown skin glowed a pretty golden color against it. “We’re in the lion’s den.”
“Exactly.”
Pope glanced at the two of them, gaze lingering on Stella longer as he asked, “Have you heard from JJ?”
Kie shook her head. “No.”
“Just a text,” Stella answered, prompting Kie to look towards her, raising an eyebrow. Stella’s lips pursed. “He said he was okay and not to worry about him. But I won’t really believe it until I see him.”
“He’ll be all right,” Kie said, frowning to herself. “He’s got the survival instincts of a cockroach.”
Stella swallowed inaudibly. Kie wasn’t really wrong.
“It’s all my fault,” Pope said, the guilt thick in his tone as he frowned at nothing. He looked like he might be sick over everything that’s happened.
Stella frowned as Kie said, “Uh, you didn’t do this, Pope.”
“Yeah,” Stella chimed in firmly. “Topper almost killed you. Remember?”
He shot her a dry look. “Not something I can forget.”
Stella shot him a small smile. “JJ was just trying to do right by you. He—he knew what he was doing.” She stumbled over her words briefly because, well, she wasn’t entirely sure if she believed them. She believed that JJ thought he was doing the right thing, but getting arrested was no small thing. He was just adding onto his record, and this time for something he didn’t even do. JJ put loyalty above anything else, and it was one of her favorite things about him—until it landed him in trouble he might not be able to get out of.
Midsummers, as expected, was boring as usual. The adults drank and the teens snuck in their own alcohol in hidden flasks, dancing to the music from the live band while almost everyone kissed Ward Cameron’s ass. Stella stuck by Kie’s side, mostly because she didn’t care for anyone else there and because Kie kept glaring at Sarah Cameron, who looked like the perfect Kook princess. She was missing her not-so-Prince Charming, Topper, who seemed to be sticking by Rafe and Kelce’s sides than with Sarah. Hmm. Interesting.
At one point, Stella excused herself to go to the bathroom, walking inside the country club and down the hall. She did her business, ignoring the giggles of the few other girls inside as she washed her hands. Just as she stepped out of the bathroom, however, she let out a gasp and stumbled into the doorframe as a figure rushed off in front of her, her gaze instantly following.
She’d recognize those blonde locks anywhere.
Stella’s heart thundered, gripping the doorframe tightly as she called out, “JJ?”
*****
Despite the severity of needing to find a hiding spot or escape, the sound of Stella’s voice had JJ stopping in his tracks. He turned, catching sight of her down the hall, too far down the hall, looking every bit as breathtaking as he expected her to in a golden dress that hugged her so perfectly. And the way she was looking at him—the surprise and relief and tenderness he was sure she reserved just for him—had JJ’s heart pounding right out of his chest, and not just because he was trying to save himself at the moment.
“Stella—” JJ stopped, looking through the glass of the doors, seeing Rafe, Kelce, and three of their suited up buddies purposefully making their way over. “Shit.” His blue eyes met her concerned brown ones. “Sweetheart, I’ll explain everything later, but I gotta run right now. Just—I’ll see you in a little, okay?”
“Wait, JJ—”
But he didn’t stick around, as much as he wanted to, and instead turned and ran off just as he heard Rafe and his buddies walk in. They’d spotted him talking to Sarah because he’d needed to give her a letter from John B, after he’d spoken to and received a surprising hug from Pope, and now they were hot on his ass looking to throw more punches. JJ’d already received a beating from his dad—he didn’t need anymore, thank you very much.
Except he made his way into the men’s room, and Rafe and his buddies were pretty fast and managed to corner him no problem. Five against one—this was totally fair. Assholes.
Rafe pushed him and JJ grunted, struggling as Kelce came up behind him and locked an arm around the front of his neck, the other keeping his head in place as JJ grabbed at Kelce’s arm to loosen the grip. He struggled, heart pounding, as Rafe looked at his friends. “Hold him still. What—what do you think? A four iron, right?” He mimicked holding a golf club. “Keep his head still. I’m gonna line this up.”
JJ didn’t make it easy for Kelce to keep him still. “Very Rafe of you,” JJ said through gritted teeth. “Five on one?”
Rafe looked pristine in his stupid blue suit and bowtie. JJ hoped he’d choke on it. “If you could please stop talking? It’s very disrespectful. I’m trying to hit a ball.” Oh, fuck no. “Learn your etiquette, my friend.”
JJ kept grunting, struggling against Kelce, using his hands as much as he could to try and get away. JJ’s voice was hoarse against Kelce’s grip as he spat back, “I’m gonna kick your teeth in.” As much fire as there was in his voice, JJ wasn’t entirely sure he’d be able to deliver on his promise. Not when the odds were stacked against him.
Rafe smirked sardonically, crouching to look up at JJ with a mocking sort of sympathy. “Your face looks really bad. Starting to look like your dad a lot more.”
The insult was grating, especially given that the bruises and cuts on his face were courtesy of his father. JJ couldn’t do much more than spit in Rafe’s face. He jerked back, wiping the saliva off his face as he grinned. “Oh, shit. Alright. It was—”
The lights began flickering. “Gentlemen!” Kelce roughly let go of JJ and pushed him off, prompting the blonde to struggle before he righted himself. The security guard approached them. “Is there a problem?”
“Oh! Pardon me, officer. No, there’s not an issue. I just—” JJ cut himself off, his breathing labored as he panted to catch his breath. He looked at the others and JJ ran his fingers through his hair before deciding on a different course of action. One he knew would likely get him out of this. “Actually, yes. No, there is an issue. Uh, we got a criminal trespass in progress here. Beep!” He waved a finger around. “Call it in, right?” The others looked at him, trying to appear casual and like they weren’t doing anything wrong. “Blatant disrespect for private property.”
Rafe clicked his tongue, scratching his ear. “Yeah.”
JJ turned to the guard. “I’m in violation of all kinds of shit, sir, but these young gentlemen—” He made a show of righting Kelce’s bowtie before he jerked him away.
“Don’t touch my shit,” Kelce said lowly.
JJ continued, “Uh, caught me, sir, and they’re about to take me away. And that’s what you should do.” He held his fists up like he was ready to be handcuffed. Again. “Escort me out of here. You got me.”
The guard grabbed his arm. JJ was relieved. “Come on.”
“All right.” JJ looked over his shoulder as the guard pulled him out, looking at the Kooks. “Fix that tie, son,” he said to Kelce before looking at Rafe. “You’re lookin’ spiffy, too. You Powerpuff Girls have fun,” he turned back around.
Rafe took a step forward, his voice smug. “Tell Stella she looks pretty hot for a scarred Pogue.”
Fire erupted in JJ’s veins at Rafe’s comment, a newfound anger rushing through him at the blatant insult from the son of a bitch. JJ didn’t care who they were—nobody talked about Stella like that. Not at all, not in front of him. JJ’s body moved at his own accord, a low growl escaping him as he jerked away from the guard and tried to launch himself at Rafe, consequences be damned of a five against one. The asshole insulted Stella. JJ couldn’t just let him get away with that.
He rushed towards Rafe, only for Kelce to jump in and push him away as the guard came to his back and pulled him away. “Hey! Stop it. Come here! Let’s go! Let’s go!”
But JJ struggled, the urge to bury his fist in Rafe’s face overwhelming after his words. “You think I’m afraid of you, bro?”
The guard pulled him back. “Come on.”
JJ turned and was guided out as Rafe’s voice followed him out of the locker room. “Hey, safe travels back to the cut!”
JJ shouted back, “This ain’t over!”
The guard didn’t let his grip on JJ go as he guided him down the halls and towards the doors, his grip tight as they burst through the doors out onto the patio. “Look, man, I can walk myself!” JJ exclaimed, earning gasps and looks from the guests at him being escorted out. “I got legs. Can you see that, brother?”
The guard didn’t seem to care. “Come on.”
“I really appreciate what you did back there. Let me just walk out by myself.” He struggled against the guard’s grip before spotting the older gentleman from earlier who had asked JJ for a drink. At this point, JJ didn’t care for the attention he was drawing on himself, stumbling over to where the man stood. “Mr. Dunleavy, I see you got your drink. Good, that’s really nice of you. I’m actually gonna down that,” he said quickly before grabbing the drink and downing the whiskey in one gulp.
The man gaped at him, the guard apologized before pulling JJ away. Everyone was watching, murmuring, and JJ never had mastered the art of subtlety, so he made a commotion as he was so kindly escorted out. Might as fucking well go out with a bang.
“Let go of him!” JJ turned at the sound of Stella’s voice, standing up on the patio with Kie by her side. Their parents were behind them, quietly telling Stella to stay quiet while her gaze met JJ’s. He stopped, kind of fucking mesmerized by the sight of her. “You can’t just boot him!”
The guard stopped, still holding onto JJ, who was still watching her. “Excuse me, ma’am?” the guard asked.
“I invited him here,” Stella continued, her voice loud and carrying over the newfound silence amongst the crowd. Everyone was looking at her, but she didn’t seem to give a shit, and JJ kind of fell in love with her all over again.
Next to her, JJ could hear her mom say, “Stella, stop it.”
“No, she’s right,” Kie spoke up, glaring at her parents and then at the guard. “We’re members of this club.”
“Girls, stop it,” Mr. Carrera seemed to be saying to them.
JJ took the opportunity of the guard being distracted to jerk out of his grip and push him, wincing as the man went stumbling into a waiter carrying a tray full of glasses that went shattering on the ground. “Sorry about that!” JJ said over the commotion before looking towards the girls. He pointed at them, blonde hair falling over his shoulders. “Hey, mandatory power hour at Rixon’s, ladies.” His gaze found Pope’s amidst the crowd’s. “Pope, you as well, all right? Rixon’s cove. Let’s roll.” He was walking backwards, people making their way for him as they all gaped at him in disbelief and annoyance. JJ looked back at the girls, holding his arm up. “All right, girls, come on.” He gripped his wrist. “Workers of the world unite. Throw off your chains!”
His gaze met Stella’s, who was watching him in, what he realized with relief, was amusement. He saw the looks she and Kie exchanged, a silent communication going on between the twins while their parents most definitely murmured warnings at them. And then, much to JJ’s relief, Stella and Kie broke away before running down the stairs.
JJ grinned widely, finally facing John B, who had been watching the whole thing with a grin. “Colonel.”
John B returned the salute JJ offered him. “Captain.”
JJ grinned. “Mission accomplished, sir.”
John B laughed as JJ shouted for the girls, watching as Pope pulled off his apron and handed it to his dad before running towards John B and JJ, all the while Mr. Heyward yelled, “Don’t do this! Where the hell do you think you’re going?”
But Pope didn’t listen, instead high fived John B and JJ, before John B ran off ahead and the two of them faced the girls running over, as well. Kie and Pope ran side by side, laughing, and JJ opened his arms so Stella could run into his embrace, and he laughed into her neck as he lifted her off the ground with a spin before setting her down, grasping her hand in his, and following the others as they ran.
“Later, losers!” John B shouted over his shoulder towards the partygoers.
Stella was laughing, the sound brilliant and wonderful in JJ’s ears as Kie cheered while they ran. JJ couldn’t help but laugh as well. It may have been a shitty couple of days, but at least he had his friends.
*****
The fire crackled between them as Stella sat on a log next to JJ. The cicadas were chirping against the otherwise quiet of the night, and JJ had changed out of the waiter get up and was back in his signature hat, shirt, and shorts combo. The sight of the shark tooth necklace Stella had gifted him around his neck always made her chest tighten in the best way. She and Kie were still in their Midsummers dresses, but mosquitos and bugs never bothered Stella, so she sat comfortably as the fire warmed them.
She kept looking towards JJ, though—at the cuts and bruises on his face. The sight of him injured tightened her chest uncomfortably, made her stomach twist nauseatingly. No doubt his dad had done this to him, and it enraged her. She wished, with every fiber of her being, that she could get him as far away from his dad as possible. It hurt, so badly, to see JJ injured at the hands of his abusive father. JJ, despite what others may see as faults and flaws, was probably the best person she knew. He had such a big heart, a soul that deserved to be loved and protected instead of stepped on and beaten. She desperately wished she could protect him from the cruelty of others. He deserved someone to do that for him.
“Hey, guys. So, like, my dad’s already gonna kill me,” Pope said as he and John B dropped some sticks to feed the fire before sitting down. “So what’s this mandatory meeting about?”
Stella watched as John B looked at JJ, pointing at him as if he needed permission. JJ nodded. “Might as well tell him, man, before we’re gaffed.”
John B smiled like he held some kind of secret. “You ready for this?” he asked, looking at Kie and Stella.
The two girls nodded impatiently. “Yeah.”
The fire glowed against John B’s skin as he looked at all of them. “So, the gold never went down with the Royal Merchant.”
Stella blinked as Pope groaned. “Oh, my God. Here we go again with this.”
Next to her, JJ sat up, holding out a calming hand to Pope. “No, all right, wait. Hear him out, all right?” he asked, raising his eyebrows at Pope and the girls.
John B had a finger to his lips before continuing, “It’s been here this whole time.” He looked to Kie. “It’s on the island.”
Her expression was one of shocked disbelief. “Are you serious?” She looked at John B before laughing in astonishment. “Oh, my God.”
Pope held up a hand. “I’d like to voice my skepticism.”
Stella was still trying to wrap her head around what John B said as he stood up. “I’m sure you would, Pope, but can I please present you with my evidence, sir?”
Pope rolled his eyes. “Proceed.”
John B held up a piece of paper he pulled out from his bag, proceeding to tell them about a letter he had from Denmark Tanny, a slave who had survived the wreck of the Royal Merchant. He showed it to Pope and the girls, telling them that the slaves weren’t mentioned as crew members on the ship, but that his dad found the complete manifest—his big discovery. Stella listened attentively, mouth agape, looking towards JJ who nodded with a smile on his face. He knew all of this already, it seemed. It was probably why he and John B had been together earlier.
“So Tanny used the gold from the Merchant to buy his freedom,” John B was saying. “After that, he bought his farm. Drumroll, please, because that farm is,” he paused dramatically as the group of them slapped their knees with their hands. “Tannyhill Plantation.”
Kie stopped. “Tannyhill?”
John B nodded, standing like a professor giving a lecture. “Yeah. So, after that, he used his money to free even more slaves, and then he sold a shit-ton of rice, which pisses off all the white planters, and then they decide to lynch him. So on the day they were coming to get him, he writes a letter to his son as a farewell, and in the last line of that letter, he leaves a coded message about where to find the gold.”
John B had Stella’s attention as she hung onto his every word, shaking her head as she asked, “Where?”
John B grinned. “Harvest the wheat in parcel nine, near the water.” He held up a hand. “Except, there is no wheat. You see, wheat is code for gold. Check this out.” He walked over to Pope, pointing at something in the paper Pope was holding. Stella leaned over to look as well. “The gold is in parcel nine, near the water.”
Kie laughed in disbelief as Pope murmured, “Holy shit.”
John B slapped his arm. “All we need is an original survey map of the property and we’ve found the gold.”
He was grinning widely as JJ stood up. Pope slowly started, “Okay, so this might have a small chance of being actually true.”
Kie bounced excitedly where she sat. “Dude, it’s like King Tut!” she exclaimed, earning a laugh from Stella.
“I am a genius,” John B announced, just as JJ tackled him into a hug. “Hey, whoa!” They teetered slightly where they stood before JJ lifted John B up. “Hello! Fire! You’re near the fire. You’re gonna burn.”
JJ pulled away and Stella snickered as he said, “I’m so proud of you right now.”
John B nodded somberly. “Thank you. That’s really sweet of you.”
With a shake of her head, Stella interrupted the moment by asking, “Okay, so, guys.” They all looked towards her. “What’s the plan?”
John B pointed at her as JJ made his way back. “Good question. Sarah Cameron’s coming tonight. She’ll bring the original survey map—”
JJ sat down next to Stella just as her eyes widened, gaping at John B before her gaze instantly shot to Kie, who was frowning. “Hold on,” she interrupted. “Sarah? Wh-why Sarah?”
Stella tensed, looking between a bewildered Kie and a hesitant John B. She and Pope exchanged glances, both of them suddenly aware of the tension building in the open space. “Um—” John B trailed off.
JJ took off his head, muttering, “This is gonna be good.”
Stella looked at him, catching the wince he shot her way. Silently, she frowned at him, but JJ shook his head before nodding towards John B, who stood with his fists on his hips. “Sarah, um, she. . . She got me into the archives in Chapel Hill yesterday, and there’s where I got the letter.”
Kie’s face scrunched up even more, looking a mix of pissed off and confused, while Stella gaped up at John B. “You were in Chapel Hill with Sarah Cameron?”
John B’s throat worked. “Yeah, um. . .”
Next to her, JJ announced, “He was mackin’ on her.”
Stella gasped as she stared at him, wide eyed, and JJ nodded somberly while Pope coughed uncomfortably into his fist. Across the fire, Kie was glaring up at John B, and Stella hated the betrayal she could already see melting into Kie’s eyes. John B shot JJ a glare. “I wasn’t macking.”
JJ lifted his chin, unrelenting. “You were totally macking Sarah Cameron.”
He wasn’t helping the situation, so Stella lightly flicked his arm, prompting JJ to immediately look at her, pressing his cut lips together to keep himself from smirking. She narrowed her eyes in warning, and all JJ did was link their arms together and pull her to his side.
“I wasn’t macking on her, okay?” John B spoke up, exasperated. “I was using her for access.”
JJ scoffed lightly. “There was access, alright.”
Stella pinched his side at that, despite the inappropriate laugh threatening to burst. Kie wouldn’t appreciate it, and Stella could tell her twin was seconds away from pushing John B into the fire. “Did you tell her about the treasure?” Kie demanded.
John B’s eyes widened. “I was trying to get into the archives.”
Kie’s voice grew loud with disbelief. “Is that a yes?”
“I. . . I left out key details,” John B said, looking to the others for help. Stella pressed her lips together, pressed up against JJ. If anyone noticed, they didn’t say anything, not with the current situation going on. Poor John B wasn’t going to get help on this.
“Yo, what?” Kie scoffed with a shake of her head. “You let a Kook in on our secret? What about Pogue Lyfe? What about the T-shirt company, bro?”
Suddenly, it was a battle between Kie and John B, and all Stella, JJ, and Pope could do was sit on the sidelines silently and watch. “I was just using her for information,” John B tried.
Kie shot him a wry look. “Why don’t I believe you?”
John B was growing exasperated already, shaking his head at the unhelpfulness of the others before looking back at Kie. “I’m trying to make us filthy rich here, okay, so that we can pay off a boat, or. . . or, uh. . .” He looked towards Pope, “send you to autopsy school to study bed bodies.” Stella’s face scrunched up as JJ suppressed a snort and Pope blinked owlishly. “Look, you guys know me. Do I look like the type of person to fall for Sarah Cameron?”
JJ blinked. “Uh—”
Stella tilted her head at John B. “Do you want us to answer that?” She could guarantee neither he nor Kie would appreciate the answer.
John B held up a hand at Stella. “Just—just stop.”
Kie shook her head, her jaw tight as she frowned deeply. “Look, you don’t know her yet. I do! You can’t trust her.”
Pope chimed in, “Her brother did hit me in the back with a golf club.”
John B looked to Pope. “Rafe and Sara are different human beings.”
JJ’s cheek was resting on top of Stella’s head as he asked Kie, “What did she do to you, exactly?”
Stella sighed. Oh, boy.
Kie held up two fingers and jabbed them forward. “She’s like a. . . a spitting cobra.” Everyone blinked, bewildered. “First she—she blinds you, and then—”
Stella was already shaking her head, sitting up straight as she said to her struggling sister, “This is a bad analogy.”
“Listen to me!” Kie exclaimed, clearly fed up with the situation. “Whatever we get, she’s gonna try to take.”
Her words were met by silence, other than the crackling fire and chirping cicadas. John B stood quietly, throat working, clearly unsure of what to say as JJ and Pope stayed in their own awkward silence, too. Stella suppressed a sigh. It seemed as though it was up to her to smooth things over, even if she did slightly side with Kie in all of this. She didn’t have a begrudging hate towards Sarah like Kie did, but they were sisters, and Stella needed to show solidarity. But she could also, in some way, see John B’s side of things. God, this was gonna be tense.
“Kie,” Stella spoke up carefully, prompting Kie’s gaze to connect with hers. “Whatever John B promised Sarah, that’s his issue. But if she’s the only way we can get the map, then we need to let it happen.”
Kie’s jaw was hard. “I don’t want her involved. I don’t want to deal with her.”
“We won’t,” Stella said, glancing quickly at John B before looking at Kie again. “Let John B deal with her.” When Kie didn’t look entirely convinced, Stella let out a huff. “This is bigger than your beef with Sarah. I know you know that.”
Silence fell upon them for a few moments as they all waited for Kie to respond. She sat quietly, hands gripping the log she sat on, mulling over Stella’s words. Stella, in turn, hoped she got through to her sister. They needed Kie to be on board with this, no matter her issues with Sarah. They’d already gotten this far in their treasure hunt—an old beef shouldn’t hinder them now.
Stella remained quiet, waiting for Kie to make a decision, although she silently enjoyed the sensation of JJ’s fingers ghosting up and down her arm, their arms still linked together. It was calming when others would argue JJ was anything but.
“Fine,” Kie finally gave in and everyone instantly sat up. She glared at John B. “As long as I don’t have to speak to her.” John B pressed his hands together and brought them to his mouth, his grin already forming. “I just hope you know what you’re getting us into.”
After John B profusely thanked Kie for agreeing, they killed the fire and got up before heading back to the van, since they had to drive to meet Sarah. The twigs and leaves crunched under their shoes as they went, but as Pope, Kie, and John B chatted while walking ahead, Stella lingered back and grasped JJ’s hand to slow his pace down.
He looked at her, eyebrows raising. “What’s up?”
Stella looked up at him, her fingers ghosting on his chin. Finally, she let the worry come out in full force as she asked, “Are you okay? Did—” she stopped, throat working to get rid of the lump that formed. “Did your dad do this?”
JJ’s jaw worked, blue eyes glimmering under the moonlight as he looked down at her. “Got a good chunk of money to pay in restitution,” he told her. “The old man’s not too happy about it.”
Despite herself, Stella felt the hot tears sting in her eyes. She preferred the pink in JJ’s cheeks when they were flushed when he was happy or even drunk—not the pink and harsh reds that surrounded the cuts and marked the bruises. Stella wasn’t sure she ever hated anyone as much as she hated JJ’s dad. Her throat was tight, unable to say anything except to croak out his name, “JJ—”
“Hey, hey,” he shushed her, hands coming up to cup Stella’s that had been ghosting along his sharp jaw. He held her hand in both of his before pressing a kiss to it, blue eyes locked in her brown. “I’m okay, Stel. They’ll heal. It’s no big deal.”
Stella scoffed, though her concern remained clear. “You can’t actually expect me to believe that.” The flutters in her stomach returned when JJ kissed her hand, when he looked at her with those baby blue eyes she loved so much. She let out a breath. “You’re sleeping over at John B’s, right?”
JJ offered her a small dimpled grin. “When am I not?”
Stella pinned him with a stare. They’d stopped walking and she knew they had to move soon, but she took a breath. “Whenever you can, either sleep at John’s or you sleep at mine. Okay?”
JJ raised his eyebrows, though she could see his gaze soften at her offer. But he kept the mood light as he teased, “You inviting me to your room, shark bait?”
Her heart jumped. “Wouldn’t be the first time we shared a bed,” Stella pointed out. It was the truth. They shared hammocks, chairs, couches, and beds countless times before.
“Yeah, but it’s different now, isn’t it?” JJ questioned.
She looked at their hands before meeting his gaze again. “Is it?” she returned, throat working in anticipation. This was it. This was Stella asking JJ if whatever was happening between them was real, if something more was going to come out of it than a few kisses shared.
JJ’s gaze was intense, deep in a way she wasn’t used to as it stole her breath. “It is.” Steady, resolute, firm. No room for arguments. Thank fuckinf God.
Stella felt her grin appear before she could help it, relief warming her, and JJ mirrored her smile before ducking his head and pressing his lips to hers. She returned the kiss slowly, gently, not wanting to hurt his cut lips. Her heart jumped excitedly as he kissed her, but it was cut short, unfortunately, when John B’s voice cut through the air.
“Oi! What happened to no macking?”
The two of them pulled apart, but John B was grinning, as were Pope and Kie as they looked at the two of them. Stella’s face flushed as JJ slung his arm around her shoulders before they began walking towards their friends. “I’m sure we can make an exception,” JJ said smoothly, cockily.
John B’s grin was wicked. “If it means you’ll finally stop whining about how much you looooove Stel, then yes we will.”
Stella laughed, cheeks flushing, while JJ spluttered. “I never whined!” he protested as they joined their friends.
Pope rolled his eyes. “That’s true. You just bottled it all up inside because you’re emotionally constipated.”
“Sounds about right. I’m the one who made the first move,” Stella said, grinning widely at JJ’s betrayed expression, laughing as he used his arm around her to push her away. Stella continued laughing, along with the others, as she stumbled away, but didn’t lose her balance because JJ instantly caught her hand and pulled her back to his side.
“Whatever. I like an assertive woman,” JJ said with a charming grin, pressing a kiss to Stella’s temple as they neared the van.
Pointing at Pope and John B as they climbed inside, Kie said, “You two owe me twenty bucks, by the way.”
“No, we don’t!” John B argued as he started the van. “It’s after Midsummers.”
Pope nodded in agreement as Kie grinned wickedly before meeting Stella’s gaze as she sat on the back bench. With a giggle, Stella confessed, “It was actually yesterday. Before the summer movie series.”
John B and Pope’s gazes swung to JJ, who leaned back with his arms propped on top of the back bench casually as he said, “It’s true, boys.” John B shook his head and began driving, and JJ added, “Can’t believe you three bet on us.”
Sitting on the floor opposite of them, Pope scoffed. “Can’t believe it took you two this long to get together.”
“Okay!” Stella spoke up loudly, clapping her hands together once and shooting all of her friends a look. “We’re done talking about this.”
They reached their destination soon after that, a spot off in the middle of the woods where a tower stood, the apparent meeting spot John B had set up at Kildare Hawk’s Nest. As soon as he parked the car, Pope slid open the back van door as JJ slapped his knees. “Hit it, boys! We’re goin’. Recon mission.”
But before any of them could even get up, John B turned to face them. “Yo, uh. . . So, uh, I think I’m gonna do this one by myself. . . Tonight.”
Thunder rumbled overhead as Kie rolled her eyes and Stella and JJ fell back in their seats. She raised her eyebrows as JJ drawled a knowing, “Really?”
John B frowned. “What?”
JJ took off his head. “Nothin’.”
John B sighed, fixing his own hat atop his head. “I don’t want to spook Sarah with the peanut gallery.”
Kie shrugged, voice sharp and annoyed as she looked at John B. “I just don’t understand why we’re involving her at all.”
Stella let out a sigh as she leaned back, JJ now sitting on the ground next to her, his head resting against her leg as she crossed her arms over her chest. “Kie, we’re not involving her, okay?” John B said, exasperated. “It’s—it’s just, uh, like a—a business meeting. . . Thing.” On the ground, JJ made a crude motion with the joint he held and made a gulping sound, prompting Pope to grin in amusement while Stella rolled her eyes at John B. He was not selling this well. “Look, once we get what we need, we cut her loose, all right? Plus, we need the map.”
Yeah, okay. Stella wasn’t quite sure how much she believed that.
Kie pursed her lips, leaning forward as she stared John B dead in the eye. “Promise me nothing’s happening between you two.”
John B widened his eyes, answering breathily, “Nothing is happening, Kie.”
“I’m being serious.”
“Okay!”
Kie was still frowning, as if she was trying to get John B to get the message through her glare. “This isn’t about you. This isn’t about us. This is about her.” Stella pressed her lips together as she watched them. Kie’s beef with Sarah was so damn deep, she wondered if they would be able to do with if she wasn’t on board with Sarah helping out just this once. Personally, Stella didn’t give a shit about Sarah Cameron; she just didn’t like her out of principle for the way the end of that friendship hurt Kie. Everything else was between Kie and Sarah. “Dude, she’s gonna get inside your head. Just promise me nothing’s happening between you guys.”
John B looked at her as lightning flashed outside and thunder rolled. “I promise.”
“That was really believable,” JJ piped up.
Pope nodded. “A hundred percent believable.”
Stella lightly knocked JJ with her knee while glaring at Pope, effectively shutting both of them up. John B didn’t dignify them with a response, instead saying, “Anyways, um, I’m gonna take care of business.”
JJ shook his head, playing with the joint. “You’re gonna take care of it so well.”
Stella waved John B off dismissively. “We’ll just sit here,” she said dryly. “In the hot-ass car.”
Pope added, “While it’s lightning.”
They left the back door of the van open as John B got out, backpack on as he walked off towards the tower. The wind rustled outside, thunder rumbling every now and then to accompany the flashes of lightning that warned of a storm rolling in. “Kiara, holding onto your grudge is like drinking poison and thinking Sarah will die,” Pope said once John B was gone.
“Exactly,” JJ nodded.
Kie shot the two of them a withering stare before looking at Stella. Her twin merely shrugged. “You know I’m on your side,” Stella said. “But you can’t really tell John B what he can or can’t do.”
“I’m not trying to tell him what to do,” Kie shot back. “I’m just warning him against the kind of person I know Sarah is. She’s gonna fuck us over.”
“Look, we just—we just gotta trust that John B knows what he’s doing,” Pope tried to placate, looking between Stella and Kie. “That he’s using his head.”
Kie scoffed, not really convinced. “I know what head he’s using, and it isn’t the one on his shoulders.”
“That’s a good one,” JJ mumbled quietly where he sat.
They were quiet for a few minutes, just listening to the rumble of thunder, before conversation started up again. Pope had asked about what happened at Midsummers, and JJ launched into the story that led up to the Kooks cornering him in the men’s room while they waited for John B to return with the map.
JJ was saying, “Rafe and Kelce followed me—”
Kie cut him off. “Wait, do you guys hear that?” Her eyebrows furrowed together. “Sh.”
Stella frowned. “What?”
And then, in the distance, over the sound of the wind howling and thunder rumbling, came a girl’s voice yelling, “Please, somebody, help!”
All of their eyes widened, instantly on their feet as JJ grunted, “Oh, wait, no, I hear that.”
“Shit,” Pope cursed as they all stumbled out.
“What the fuck?” Stella muttered, gripping the skirt of her dress so it didn’t get tangled in her feet as she ran.
The voice, Stella realized, belonged to Sarah, and her heart started pounding as they ran towards the Hawk’s Nest, throat already drying in worry. The first thought in her head was that something went terribly wrong, that John B was hurt, and when they all cleared a group of trees towards the base of the Nest, Stella’s fear came true as a gasp ripped through her at the sight of John B lying on the ground, Sarah crying as she cradled his head and begged for him to wake up and open his eyes.
“Sarah! What happened?” Pope asked as they came running over, skidding to a stop, their breathing labored.
Sarah was crying, and Stella’s heart clenched at the sight of John B, unconscious, fear drenching her veins in ice as she instantly gripped Kie’s hand. “I don’t know what to do,” Sarah sobbed. “He needs help. Topper shoved him.”
Anger heated Stella’s skin, momentarily taking over the terror trembling her body as JJ demanded, “Where the hell is he?”
But Sarah just cried, “Oh, please, please, please get help. I don’t care who. Just call someone.”
Stella pushed Pope away as she panted, “Go! Call 911! Go!”
Pope took off and Kie shouted after him, “Pope, hurry!”
They all stood, breathing labored and hearts pounding, unsure of what to do as their friend lay unconscious. Worry weighed heavily on them all, to the point where Stella couldn’t even stop to question the way Sarah was holding John B to her, crying for him, kissing him and begging for him to wake up. No, nothing else mattered other than their injured friend, the tears stinging in Stella’s eyes as she prayed to anyone who was listening that he would wake up. Soon. Now. Please.

So due to popular demand I watched episode 2 of Walker for you guys. Part 2 of 2
The pilot was more interesting and it wasn’t interesting. But let’s continue, maybe it’s gonna get better.
So my cookies are ready now! I ate the smallest one to check if they’re good. They are. At least I have my cookies.
Apparently now they have to take a horseriding test. Walker puts the saddle on a horse. But he gets emotional. The flashback music starts. If I see more of these I will develop rabies symptoms. I’m sorry this is what we’re talking about. This is Geneviève Padalecki’s role in this show.
Tumblr media
Walker gets on the horse. He touches the bad and the flashback sound effect plays. Rabies. “Walker are you okay?” Ramirez asks. He nods. I’m Fine Lie #9000.
Tumblr media
No, wait. He gets off the horse. Dude it’s called handling a loss badly and they have therapists for that. Please go to therapy. There are literal professionals trained to help you with that.
He takes off his hat, which lets you know this is serious.
He goes at the bar run by the lady who was with Emily when she died. He is no longer a ranger until he passes the test. We are happy about it because he is not in the psychological conditions to be a law enforcement officer. Oh, wait, we’re supposed not to be happy about it. Honestly, I’m not sure. Is he supposed to be relatable, or are we supposed to think that he’s screwed up and should not be a cop or a parent right now? Because he’s ostensibly the latter but maybe the intentions of the writers are the former.
He says that James thinks he’s “not quite right in the head”. Mmm… are we supposed to think James is being exaggerated? Because it’s true. He’s not in the conditions to do this job… he needs to get professional mental health support, period.
They reminisce about Emily and Walker repeats the same things that made him think there’s more to the case than it appears, like the way her eyes were closed. The bartender confesses she closed her eyes. Well. That was anticlimactic.
In the meanwhile, Liam the gay brother meets his partner for lunch. He’s attractive. Liam would also be if he weren’t dressed and hair-styled like that. I dunno. The partner wants them to move to New York. They joke about dying of queso.
Augustus goes to take pictures with his mother’s camera and has a glowy flashback of his own. “He’s sensitive. He keeps a lot inside, like his father” his grandma comments to her husband. They talk about Walker fixing the house. “He wants to pick up where he left off” she says. I am hurting inside. Did they write this with the Supernatural pilot script open on the desk!?
Ramirez keeps working the case. Turns out, the horse that died wasn’t the horse it was supposed to be (a famous racing horse). Someone swapped the horses? I don’t care, actually. I’m gonna skip the case details.
Walker eats tortilla chips with queso. And begs Ramirez to let him work on the case because that’s all he knows how to do. That’s stolen from a couple Supernatural episodes when they talk about hunting, but okay.
“You know how you can see a horse’s soul in its eyes?” …no, but okay.
They’ll need to find the mysteriously disappeared horse… which is loose! In the hospital! No, not in the hospital. Just on a road. Best shot in the show, big dark horse walking around Austin.
They need to go find the horse. Obviously Walker volunteers to get the horse. “Might not be a ranger, but I’m still a cowboy”. I’m crying this is so cliché.
You know Walker is cool because he gets out of the truck without using the little step.
Tumblr media
It’s so deep.
Oh my god. He. He follows horse dung. It’s. It’s literally a plot point. He tracks the horse following horse poop.
He finds the horse, feeds him a lil sugar cube, puts the reins on him. It’s a beautiful horse. Can’t the show be about this horse?
Billionaire bad guy (owner of the horse, set the fire to pretend the horse was dead because lots of bets were placed on the horse, but the horse was lightly injured so couldn’t win) driving towards his plane to catch his plane to escape. James and Ramirez do a car chase.
Bad guy lackey shoots at their wheels so their car stops. But Walker arrives on the horse, gets Ramirez on the horse and they ride the horse to the bad guys’ car. Ramirez gets on the car and punches the bad guys unconscious.
For some reason (I mean, budget limitations) the fighting sequences are very quick. I would have watched more of Ramirez kicking billionaire bad guy’s ass on a moving car. But it’s fine, I mean, if this show had a bigger budget they’d spend it on more cowboy hats, so it’s fine.
Walker, James and Ramirez celebrate at the bar. Apparently the bad guy’s lackey that was supposed to get rid of the horse loved the horse too much and set him free in Austin. Mood.
There’s still a third of the episode still to go, though. Drama will ensue. Indeed Liam arrives and is super pissed off at Walker for missing lunch, which he forgot because he was busy with his lil tests.
Liam says Stella didn’t show up to the game. Walker says he know where she is and gets Ramirez to come with him.
Indeed she’s thrown a party at their house. Walker asks her what she’s doing. “Being a disappointment I guess” she answers. He asks her why she missed the game. She says that it shouldn’t be so easy to get a second chance after messing up - like him. He’s like, a second chance? It’s not like a stopped being your father. Except… you did? You disappeared from their lives entirely. He calls her out for damaging the house and she’s like, it’s not even our home anymore but I’m supposed to treat it like a museum? Honestly her scenes are the only interesting thing in this show. He says he’s back now, but she says that being back isn’t enough, what makes a parent is *doing parent things*, supporting the kids.
“I wish uncle Liam had gotten custody of us when he tried” she eventually drops the big bomb. Ouch.
He’s super pissed off, takes off the hat dramatically, and drives back to Liam. He gets off the drunk and immediately assaults Liam. “You tried to take my damn kids!”
I’m flabbergasted. They. They just wrote a plotline where a gay man tried to ~steal a straight man’s children~ like it was a good idea. I mean! Liam getting custody of the kids would have been a VERY GOOD IDEA but what, we’re supposed to think he was wrong? I am so confused because I can’t tell if we’re supposed to be on Walker’s side or not. He is NOT in the condition of being a parent. The kids SHOULD be under the custody of their grandparents and/or uncle. Not because he’s traumatized by loss, but because he’s not trying at all. He keeps saying he’s trying but he’s not. He gets aggressive too easily and it could be dangerous.
Anyway the brothers have this physical fight which isn’t by far the most embarrassing thing in this show so I’ll let it slide. “You had no right!” Walker says, to which Liam replies that he gets it was rough but “you went dark! That was negligence!” Which is absolutely right and he should have gotten the custody of the kids. Liam mentions that their parents also agreed on the thing, and Walker yells “these are MY kids!” which is appalling, because being the biological father of some kids doesn’t make it okay to disappear on them for months and being mad if someone else stepped up to be their parent in your absence. “I didn’t want them to be orphans, did you!?” Liam yells back.
“I would never _take_ them, I wanted to protect them,” Liam says, and says more very reasonable things. “Even now you’re not here.” Walker yells that he is here (again, being physically in Austin doesn’t make you a parent, like Stella said), Liam replies that he’s chasing ghosts.
He brings up the things that don’t add up again, like the poker chip. I’m afraid that the narrative will prove him right, that there WAS something there and he was right to follow through the case despite everyone else telling him he was being delusional and that he should let it go and focus on the family. It would be actually good if it turned out that there was nothing there, that it was all coincidence (like the friend closing her eyes) and that he just chased ghosts for real, but I’m afraid this isn’t that kind of show. I think they’re playing it straight, that they’ll make Walker be right, and it will suck.
A note: now that he’s fighting and yelling and being angry, Jared is actually acting properly, which I don’t know if it’s a good thing or creepy.
Actually Liam says something very reasonable now, that answers will not actually satisfy him, her being gone will never make sense emotionally. The poker chip isn’t going to bring her back. He will lose everything if he keeps searching for something that isn’t there.
Now that Walker has calmed down, Jared returns to doing Jared mouth things. Oh no! Augustus watched them fight.
Oooh. Augustus gives him the present Emily was going to give him for father’s day. Poker chips. “She kept a few of the chips so she could show people” (what? But okay). Another of the mysteries was actually not a weird conspiracy at all. I suspect the narrative will make us believe there was nothing there to just pull a twist afterwards. It would be interesting if Walker were indeed looking for nothing, but I doubt that’s what they’re doing. They’re playing the tropes too straight.
Meanwhile Ramirez comes home to her boyfriend preparing a homemade dinner. She says she’s happy he’s there, and that scares the crap out of her. She wants to get both the job and the relationship right. They’re really cute and I hope their relationship doesn’t get drama-fied for drama. A healthy relationship where two partners figure out how to navigate it together, with normal minor bumps along the way they face together, would really be a good thing for the show to portray.
The next morning, Walker is making breakfast when Stella enters the kitchen. She doesn’t speak to him but gets on her phone so he starts texting her. They have a moment. He was looking for him mug and she gets it out for him. She says it reminded her of him being gone so she’d put it away. They do a bonding activity (bringing a memento from their old house to their new one), she cries, he hugs her.
Back at the ranch, Walker’s father has made him a new saddle. Gramps Walker is rough around the edges but has a hidden wisdom.
The emotional moment is kinda broken for me by the big Texas flag they have inside the house. I suppose it’s just how Texas is but it’s still funny for that very reason.
Augustus for his school project has put together a video from old family footage. Lots of flashback, but this time with a regular song and not the rabies sound effect and with the soft lighting but not the most extreme glowy effect, so it’s kinda okay.
Jared makes emotional faces and the episode’s over.
Well, at least the dead guy having been to prison wasn’t really relevant and the bad guy was a billionaire. An improvement from the previous episode.
I’m not going to give views to the youtube trailers, but I’ve been told in the next episode a new character will be introduced that is a childhood friend that is ~the Han Solo to Walker’s Luke Skywalker. *single tear of sorrow* They’re trying SO HARD to be Supernatural and they’re managing to pick the least interesting concepts of Supernatural to do so. Can’t wait to see Fake Dean. Also we haven’t seen Walker lasso a person either. I suppose I’ll have to watch more of this.
Honestly, it’s mostly boring with Stella being the only interesting part and Ramirez and her boyfriend being cute to watch. Walker is so unlikeable. You want him to get his shit together for the sake of the people around him, but not really for his sake. He should go to therapy but he is a manly cowboy man so obviously he won’t go (but I will be impressed if they actually have him see a therapist. It would be interesting to have a manly cowboy man see a therapist. But will they do it?) The idyllic flashbacks of Emily are so overdone and it’s only the second episode! Everything is cheesy.
This traditional Texan ranch aesthetic meets Austin city would be interesting if played in a way that genuinely questions the values of old, but the show doesn’t really, it uses the gay brother and the immigrant friend and the Latina cop and the Black boyfriend as props but the narrative itself doesn’t really do anything with the traditional Texan family thing. Unless they really pull the rug from under the audience’s feet and make some big twists regarding the way the narrative is presenting itself, there’s nothing really interesting or useful in the show. I’m afraid they will solve their problems by Wanting To Do Better and Sticking Together As A Family, which is just a conservative fantasy of how to fix problems.
By the way, the cookies were really good and my family loved them too.

ok. i finished 10 minutes ago and needed a break. prepare for a long message miss stella 🙂
firstly, THE BEGINNING. WHAT THE CUCKSNEKMFKD. THE WORKING OUT, THE WATCHING EACH OTHER IN THE MIRROR, THE SEXUAL TENSION I COULD FEEL THROUGH THE SCREEN. i-
ok but when oc was kinda sad she wasn’t invited i wanted to cry because i get so immersed into the story i forget nari isn’t hers. it’s just cause she’s so amazing to nari that i forget :/ and it’s hard for me to accept she’s not oc and jk’s baby. anyways.
the ASS EATING STELLA. u went in and i’m so happy for that. wait i need to appreciate this snippet:
“As your tongue works over him, he chants over and over again, tells you how hot you look, how good your mouth feels, how wants you to keep going. It’s when you point your tongue a little, just barely pressing into his rim that his hand goes to the back of your head.
He holds your face to his ass, pushes you into him as he melts into the chair, his chest rising and falling with deep breaths that lilt up at the end.
“Good girl,” Jeongguk moans, his eyes blinking open hazily as he looks down at you again.”
WHDKSIWNEJE THIS WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SMUT FOR ME.
hELP BUT WHEN SHE SAID DADDY AND HE WAS LIKE “no🤨” I SCREAMED … the sir kink i gotta go. let’s not forget how oc was CRYING from the jock. she was so overwhelmed, there was so much happening. like the way u were adding in the little thoughts where we could tell love was brewing 😞 oh and i need to mention him holding her up cause she was completely fucked out… yeah
wait before i get to the hard part, I WANNA SAY JK HAVING A LITTLE AREA FOR NARI WITH A DANCE BAR 😭 sobbing rn
…. ok
now onto the madness.
i just knew nari’s mom was gonna be at the door. like if she wasn’t u would’ve been like “you paid the delivery guy quickly and walked to the kitchen” but the way you were processing every second before oc opened the door.. i just KNEW.
the AWKWARDNESS. we all know oc is gorgeous but we’ve all been there where we meet someone important and we don’t look our best and we’re sCREAMING inside. now oc didn’t seem to care besides the fact she was in jk’s shirt and it was painfully obvious they just fucked (wait i wish oc was like “bitch i ate his ass bet u never did before” ok let me stop)
we all knew dasom was gonna be THAT mom. hardworking, intimidating, classy, beautiful, JUDGEMENTAL. and whilst reading i was angry…quite PISSED OFF i will admit, BUT the more u think about it.. yeah imagine taking your daughter to your ex’s house and seeing a beautiful young woman in a your ex husbands shirt and your daughter reaching for her… what would u do? i’d be petty. so yeah can i blame her? no.
but i still wanted to punch her in the fucking face. like i have a strong hate for her but i also don’t?? it bothers me that her and jk thought having a baby would fix everything. at least they’re both amazing parents. nari’s speech issues hurt me sm. i could feel gguk’s worry. and ngl i felt for dasom when she cried. but also GET OUT OF HERE CUNT!! (i’m bipolar when it comes to her sorry 😁)
but i am mad at gguk for not defending oc. i know he was kinda in shock from the questions about “are u committing to her” but it made me upset. maybe cause i’ve been in that situation. and having someone u care about NOT defend u fucking hurts. a guy did the same to me with his ex. i get it’s a different situation tho, my ex wasnt a hot sexy rich carrying dilf…
but this is stressful because i understand both sides. i don’t think i’d want to become a stepmom at 22. no matter how much i loved someone and their kid. this is hard for me to say but, i for once would be okay with them not ending up together. (i say this now but if they don’t i’ll be kicking n crying on the floor cussing u out)…. this is totally different than icrlr because here we have both sides communicating their feelings and concerns.
and they are both in COMPLETELY different parts of their life. it hurts.. so bad to say but maybe they aren’t meant to be together.
damn stella you’ve broken me. i’m actually wishing for them to part. look what you’ve done to me 🙂
now i’m not saying i’d be mad if they end up together, but i feel like if they don’t, it makes sense.
but iF THEY DONT POOR NARI WILL MISS HER. oh speaking of nari and oc… the part where she was holding her face while crying i- 😭 ur evil for that. babies r so precious. i’m done. and THE NARWHAL NOOOO 🙁
well i feel like i touched on everything i can remember. i’m sure more will come to mind after some re-reads. thank u my lovely stella, for the lengthy update. 💖💖
(but damn u cant put me thru the ringer like this … my feelings are so fucked up rn)
ahhhh yaz <33 ur reviews always make me sooo happy <333
i too forget that nari isn't oc's sometimes :( (or like i choose to forget about her mom lmao) she and nari have such a special bond </3
yes the ass eating 😤 and yeah okay, when he was pushing her into him i had to pause and like... think about my choices bc something activates me when jk gets so into it 🥴 im glad u liked it, love writing ass eating <3 jk really was like 'no daddy kink ever 🙅🏻' LMAO i feel like this smut was one of their more passionate times, they both were so into it n <33
ur exactly right about the kind of mom dasom is LOL and ur also right about how she reacted, like i feel like i would have definitely acted similarly, if not more petty 😭 but yeah she was kinda bitchy and didn't have to express herself that way. and when they were talking about nari, i really wanted to show dasom isn't a bad mom, and they she LOVES nari... like she's the antagonist but she's not a villain, i wanted her to be very human. (i kinda have a soft spot for her tbh)
it really is so hard because everyones emotions are valid. i know some people will pick sides, but i as the writer understand the motives of everyone a little better so i have a difficult time, although i can understand the flaws in each characters thinking process lol. they have a lot to think about and work through </33
thank u so much for reading and for taking the time to send me this like u have no idea how much i look forward to reading what u think about my stuff, ur opinion is valuable to me friend <33

Season 3 Episode 1: The Princess' Ball
Oh I am EXCITED for this
Oh god okay new shots in the intro include a well-dressed man who very much looks like a human version of Scarlemagne from Kipo. Gonna go out on a limb and assume he's the new antagonist
Musa's hair's longer!! Oh it's so cute
Okay who is this blue haired lady that keeps showing up in the intro she's clearly important but gives me villain vibes
Also loving the amount of ballgowns they're clearly going to wear this season
Stella's packing for a vacation, good start
Musa "wear whatever you have" is not advice Stella would EVER take come on
And why exactly is vacation way shorter this year? You can't just say that and expect me not to question it
I think Techna's voice actor has changed >:(
Layla and Musa aren't going home? Aww...
"Hitherus" iconic
KIKO
Oh nice one Layla
Oh no Stella's getting a sungram please tell me her parents aren't cancelling on her
Oh Stella's getting a princess ball! Also "back when they still had arranged marriages" implies that Sky actively proposed to Diaspro and they were actually dating so... what's the truth lover-boy?
Oh no her dad has a suprise announcement he thinks will make her happy? What's the bet he's either pulling her out of school or has found her a husband
Aww Stella's bringing the whole squad!!
"Approaching omega dimension" with ominous music... can I assume we're either going to see the Trix or fancyboy?
Oh they're delivering three prisoners... Icy? Darcy? Stormy?
"They say it's so cold down there it freezes your heart solid" well Icy won't exactly have an issue now will she
Yep it's the Trix
Okay so Icy just woke up with glowing eyes which is a whole thing but can we talk about their frozen expressions? They not only look afraid but in pain... when were they frozen? What happened to them? I hope they're okay
Well Icy's free
Icy I'm loving your monologue but do you want to maybe free your coven sisters
Oh no she's hoping her parents are getting back together honey no
Oh my god Icy freed Darcy and Stormy and they both immediately collapsed they look so exhausted I'm so worried for them
"Only the baddest of the bad get sent here, girls" "Nice! I bet they're talking about us at Cloud Tower" I cannot stress enough that these are not Big Bad Villains they're just teenagers who don't want to be forgotten and have been abused and manipulated please can they get redemption arcs
Oh ice-laser-breathing-snakes. Isn't that fun?
Stormy actually looked terrified oh no
Blue haired girl from the intro has made her entrance and she's a dick
Pizza man is not okay with this Stella Vs Mystery Girl fight in his shop
Sorry they're... what? Please tell me she didn't actually say "Betas" like it's a flex
Oh wow her friends have a song and dance. Isn't that lovely
Okay I was willing to accept Mystery Girl right up until she was a bitch to Flora now she's going down
Techna going "snap" to emphasise Stella's insult? Iconic. Especially since she did it better than the Betas
Musa's getting her hair spelled! Excited to see it longer
Bloom and Stella are alone <3
Virtual dresses? Excellent world building
Montage!!
The Beta bitch is going to steal Stella's dress isn't she
Yep there we go
HOW DARE YOU PUSH STELLA AND BLOOM OVER
The Trix are running from the snakes oh shit
IT FROZE STORMY'S MAGIC AND SHE LOOKED SO SCARED AGAIN NOOO
Icy actually called back to make sure Stormy knew where they were going! I'm so glad they all care about each other <3
Icy please stop enjoying the icy floor the others can't deal with this like you can
Love that Icy jumped then flew into the cavern while Darcy and Stormy just fell straight down
Again, Icy is fine and gets up straight away, Darcy is hurt and crouched down and Stormy is just straight up lying on the floor please look out for the non-icy witches Icy
Oh there's sir fancyboy. His name's Baltor and I believe I've vaguely heard it
He was sentenced to eternity?? Jesus. Also implies that they would have gotten the Trix out at some point which is interesting
"Frozen dude, blink once if you can see us" okay first of all Icy his name is Baltor and it is literally RIGHT in front of you, secondly he was sentenced to eternity do you really want to try and team up with that? Thirdly iconic line though I love her
Love that Stormy's like "what if we unfeeze this guy so the snakes can kill him and we can get away" and Icy immediately agrees. These girls are pro-murder but everyone has flaws and they're cute so
Darcy and Stormy protecting Icy's back while she's using her (clearly diminished) powers to unfreeze Baltor? Even though they know damn well there's nothing they can do against the snakes? Absolutely brilliant the Trix are such a strong group I love that they actaully love each other and will protect the others at all costs
Fully ran behind Baltor and shoved him into the snakes lol
OH SHIT BALTOR KILLED ALL THREE SNAKES WITH LIKE 0 EFFORT
He's so extra I love him
He was frozen and awake for 17 years... yikes
I didn't notice his stupid little beard until now yikes Baltor please shave it
Oh he cut Icy off this won't end well Darkar has taught her not to let anyone else take charge
Baltor being like "I have no idea what any of you can do and I know I'm powerful but we've been sentenced to the same place so you probably are too. Also I'm out numbered so Imma just let you do what you want... for now" is the smartest villain-play so far
Meanwhile Stella's still trying to get her dress from Beta bitch
"Tantrum Tirade" is Beta bitch's spell so she's clearly the epitome of 'daddy's little rich girl'. Just the Winx version of Veruca Salt. Clearly Beta is for the trustfund babies without talent. Yikes
We have a name lads: Chimera
OH NO HER SPELL IS MAKING A BASKET OF PUPPIES FALL FROM A HIGH BALCONY
Watch Stella lose the dress because she's a good fucking person and won't let the puppies die
OH THOSE DOGS ARE SO CUTE
Oh shit. She's "soon going to be the princess of solaria". Shit man. Stella's dad's marrying Chimera's mother isn't he. That's the news SHIT
The gate to Tides? Oh no Baltor and the Trix can't wreck Layla's home world :(
Baltor you little bitch you could have told them the gate was re-enforced BEFORE they tried to break it and got thrown backwards
Icy might want to show off but I love how Darcy and Stormy are like "bitch do NOT bring that snake back near us"
The teamwork lads. Icy redirecting the beam so Darcy and Stormy can break the barrier? Immaculate. Also I love how Icy has started calling them "ladies" I just think it's cute
Baltor's little hops are ridiculous
"I like your style" "Back at ya Baltor" Icy I can't believe you just WINKED please stop flirting your girlfriends are RIGHT THERE
Mermaid guards!!
Okay but for real, why do you even HAVE an omega dimension gate? Like, what was the purpose? Come on
Oh Baltor's enslaving the mermaids. Christ that was quick
"How do all these guys get minions?" "I don't know but we gotta get some too" says Stormy and Icy, ignoring the third member of the Trix who's primary power is MIND CONTROL (also the Trix are so cute I'm sorry they're just adorable)
Musa's long hair is WONDERFUL
Okay Stella's new dress is actually quite cute
Musa please don't ignore your boyfriend
Are we going to find out why Bloom and Sky fought or...?
Riven brought music for Musa oh my god I can't believe I'm starting to like him... but the growth... the development... HE'S ACTUALLY KINDA CUTE NOW SHIT
"Something's wrong with the ocean" no shit Layla there's a TIDAL WAVE
RIVEN JUST SAVED A TINY CHILD AWW
Layla saving the OTHER tiny child
Oh... bye Layla! Good luck fighting Baltor alone...
"You brand them, turn them into freaks and take their power? Very cool, Baltor..." Icy PLEASE I know you have a crush but come on
Baltor's electric guitar solo is peak

ALLIE so you said that you don't usually read contemporary romance so i was wondering what are the books that you've read and loved? because i feel like if you're so picky about the genre then the ones you love must be really good ones :D thank you! have a nice day!
Hiiiii, thank you for overestimating my book taste but here are some good recs for ya! I absolutely love these books. I hope you’ll enjoy them as well.
Beach Read by Emily Henry
- January is a best-selling author…well, was. She used to adore her parents’ marriage which inspired her to write books with happy endings. But ever since her father died and she found out that he’d been cheating on her mum (who had cancer), she stopped believing in love.
- Now, she’s broke. Her father left her his beach house so she moved there, trying to find inspiration again. Her new neighbour is Augustus Everett. He’s her author rival. She’s hated him since uni because he’s arrogant and is more successful than she is. They write completely different genres and Gus hates happy endings.
- One day, he suggests that they make a bet - she’ll write a book with an unhappy ending (like the stuff he usually writes) while he’ll try to write a cute love story with a happy ending. The person who sells more books wins, and the loser has to promo the winner’s book for free.
- This story will give you butterflies in the stomach (because the banter is so fucking good), and also the steamy scenes are hot af. I also shed a few tears at the end.
The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
- Khai Diep has no feelings because he’s autistic. His mother takes matters into her own hands and returns to Vietnam to find him the perfect bride, a mixed-race girl living in the slums of Ho Chi Minh City named Esme.
- These characters are wonderful on their own. And ASIAN REPRESENTATION BITCHES! I’m Vietnamese and these characters are Vietnamese and the author is Vietnamese, so if you’re interested in finding out more about our culture while falling in love with all of these characters, READ THIS BOOK!
- This is the second book of The Kiss Quotient trilogy. Though the first book (The Kiss Quotient - follows the story of Khai’s cousin Michael who’s an escort hired to teach Stella a virginal economist to date and have sex, their relationship is similar the one in Flatmate!) remains my favourite, this is also a very heartwarming story that I think you’ll enjoy! And we get to see a bit of Michael and Stella from the first book! 😻
You Deserve Each Other by Sara Hogle
- This is about an engaged couple who have fallen out of love with each other. This book is so different from all the romance novels I’ve read because I started out thinking they were very toxic, then as the story progressed I gradually fell in love with these two and their relationship and began to root for them. - I love that this story shows how true love doesn’t always mean you’ll meet someone, fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after. Real people fall out of love all the time and that’s just a part of life. So to see how these characters fall back into love (after having convinced me that it was impossible for there to be a satisfying ending) was really enjoyable and heart-warming. - I loved that they went from being against each other to being them against the world. And I love the kind of relationship where they are each other’s best friend, they open up, they communicate, they have fun together, they understand each other. Also, the writing is beautiful. And I’m so glad I decided to pick up this book. Definitely one of the best ones I’ve read this year.

Let’s watch more in Italian!
By the by, if any of you out there in tumblr-land know where there are more episodes in English, don’t keep it to yourself!  I’m somewhat terrified my only source won’t be supplying them anymore and I’ll have to wait and hunt, and there’s stuff a few episodes on that I REALLY want to see and dissect and have All The Opinions on.
But no hint of that stuff will appear before us in these two filler-laden but fun episodes.
21 La gara di ballo su Melody
Alfea!  Grizelda lectures in the courtyard.  they’re doing magic shield practice and Knut and Kiko are shooting cannonballs with a catapult to be shielded against.  I wonder if shields against a physical object and shields against  a magic zap are a different spell.  Stella’s shield is a gold star.
Musa is up next but her phone rings.  Riven wants to go out for ice cream!
So they’re back together?  I don’t really remember them getting back together.  My guess is here’s what happened: the second-half writers were told that part of the plot in the first half was that Musa and Riven would get back together, and then the first-half writers… flubbed it.  It happens to us all, you get to the end of the story and realize you didn’t manage to do one of the things you were planning to do.
Or else this ice cream date is Riven’s attempt to actually get back together. Without understanding the dialog I can’t be sure.
Because she’s paying attention to her phone she nearly gets beaned with a cannonball, and then Knut launches Kiko from the catapult, and then the star box appears to save us from the slapstick.
We’re going to Melody!  I think the girls ask Grizelda’s permission to go, which is weird because it again brings up the question of whether they’re heroes or students, adults or kids.  You can’t really be both.
So Musa texts Riven that they have to go save the universe again.  Flora talks to Musa, I bet that conversation would clear up my confusion if I could understand it.
Bloom is concerned about the Trix, but Stella says there’s no way the Trix could be there already and we cut to…
The Trix were there already!  Aerial zappy battle for the star, which is on top of one of these really cool giant rock spires that have the tops carved into treble clefs.  Love the geography!  I want to imagine who carved these things, I wonder how people know when they move into a realm what kind of magic it will have.  The girls’ home realms each have a certain flavor, while Magix isn’t associated with any particular kind of magic.
In the fight the prime star gets dislodged and its little hamster ball goes sailing off towards the city.  Everybody follow it!
Cut to… a disco! Or some kind of… do nightclubs really look like that?  Colored lights, big speakers, several levels of dance floors, big screens. Very cool.  The partygoers do not look particularly traditionally Asian, they’re all colors and wearing big pants and hats and sweaters.  I think this is like, Asian punk clothing?
And there’s Galatea!  The art style has actually made her look older than she was, she’s wearing the same dress as when we saw her in the sovereign council, that super skinny dress with the ruffles up front. I feel like the very classical-music Galatea should look more uncomfortable at this not-classical club, she doesn’t fit aestetically, but she’s having a grand time announcing the dance contest.
The Winx come in, I don’t know how they knew to come here.  Galatea holds up the prize for the contest, a crown with a treble clef on it, and the prime star landed inside.
Ok, it flew from outside and landed perfectly in the crown and Galatea’s holding it up and doesn’t notice?  Come on.
So Musa goes, “Hey, Galatea, old friend, we need that star and then you can go back to enjoying your contest!” and Galatea gives it to her--
Not.  That is not what happens.
I wish I knew what she was saying about Galatea here.
The Trix are here too.  Icy tries some magic and it doesn’t work and all the punk kids glare at her.  She looks quite worried for just being glared at by a bunch of punk kids!
So we’ll just have to win the contest to get the prime star!
Bloom seems pretty happy about this, and Stella gets everyone dressed up. Gradient-colored outfits with neon edging.  Bloom comes off worst, the designers couldn’t bring themselves to go with blue so she’s in mostly a muddy purple and her hairstyle is not good.  Flora’s is similarly blah, Musa has cute banding across her top and I like her very ninties hair.  Tec is cute in green and Stella in yellow. Aisha’s turquoise with purple neon looks the best.
The Trix argue.  I think Darcy wants out of this latest wacky plan by her sisters.  Icy and Stormy get their dance clothes on and they look awesome!  Way better than the Winx.  Icy’s hairdo is a bit much but other than that they rock.
We cut to Red fountain.  Sky and Brandon are sparring.  Riven is brooding about Musa.  The boys talk, and I shudder to think what advice they’re giving Riven.
Back on melody Stella offers to be first in the dance contest.  Galatea recognizes her by name so the girls totally could call on their friendship with Galatea to get the star.
This dance contest is like DDR Twister, anywhere on the floor can light up and also spots in the air.  I cannot wait until this is a real thing in AR. It’s coming, people.  It’s coming.
Stella isn’t great, she gets catapulted off the stage and lands in Bloom’s arms.
Icy vs Flora dance! Bloom says, ‘Icy’s not bad!” which is my level of understanding Italian.  Flora grins cutely the whole time and is pretty adorable, but she loses and gets carried off the stage in a bubble which pops, dropping her in aisha’s arms.
I used to love DDR. I was terrible at it, but it’s fun.
Darcy is following Musa to her house.  Musa left the competition at some point.  Musa and her dad!  Hugs!  Musa’s house is cool, it’s Asian-ish with like, lines of music along the roof..
Inside, screens, sliding doors.  Musa remembers her childhood with her parents, it’s really sweet.  There’s a huge double-harp, it has part an upright normal harp and part a bench with harp strings over it and Matlin and Ho-boe played it together.  I wonder if that’s a real thing, like the sofa of harps.
Outside Darcy mocks their precious memories.
Tecna vs Stormy dance!   I guess they’re saving their strongest dancer, Aisha, for the final level.  Tec gets farther than Flora did and ends up in a perfect tie with Stormy.  They rematch and Stormy wins.
Galatea should not be so chipper about public enemy numbers one and three winning her contest.  Why hasn’t she called the police?  She knows who the Trix are, she’s calling them by name…
Musa is eating ice cream with her dad, it’s sweet.  She tells him about riven as Darcy lurks outside.
And there’s Riven sneaking up on Darcy!  Except she beats him in a fight and puts a mind control spell on him.
Musa hears a noise outside and thinks it’s the Trix, but it’s Riven.  She invites him in.  Darcy gloats.
Next time: more dancing!  No really, that’s all in the preview.
22 Il secreto del’armonia
Musa invites the enchanted Riven in.  She gets that he’s not quite himself but doesn’t seem to suspect… then he attacks!
Bloom vs Icy dance! They take a break to mock each other.
I can tell the girls are talking about melody and it drives me crazy there’s worldbuilding I can’t have yet!
Riven tries to fight off the mind control spell!  Darcy invisibly talks to him. Riven attacks Musa again!    Musa tries to reason with him!  I’m not sure she knows he’s enchanted or not.Riven manages to say darcy’’s here, Darcy appears and orders Riven to attack but he makes lots of lightning come from his suit like Sky did and shakes off the spell.
They have a romantic hug.
Ok, these suits, what are they?  What all can they do?  They give the boys basically all the powers of a fairy.
Darcy appears and summons some blobby creatures that are not staryums from a portal. Riven is ready to fight!  Musa is more keen on getting her dad to safety.
Bloom vs Icy dance! Icy loses.  Icy gets mad and tries magic and it doesn’t work.
Critters menace Riven and Musa!  Musa finally Cosmixes-up.  They fight critters. Darcy retreats.
Bloom vs. Stormy dance!  Stormy mocks, but Bloom is confidant.  Tie!  Rematch!  Bloom can do this all day!  More dancing, this time with zaps of electircity they have to avoid while they dance!  Bloom loses!
Back at home all three of them eat ice cream.  Musa and Riven start to argue and Ho-boe laughs.  Then the pair laugh.
Then Musa and Riven play the sofa harp together.  The music is really pretty.  They have found harmony!  Only… when did Riven learn to play?  A critter is outside watching.
Aisha made it to the dance final!  Aisha vs. Stormy with zappy electricity!  I think Stormy is telling Aisha what Darcy’s up to.  It works, Aisha loses.
Stormy grabs the crown and celebrates.  Icy’s right there to grab the prime star but Stormy’s not giving it up.  Then the prime star poofs away!
It appears for Musa!  Riven gapes.  Darcy’s critter sees and runs off to get the Trix.
Musa and Riven have a romantic moment.
The Trix meet up in an alley and Darcy’s critter reports in.  Stormy tosses the crown away and the critter puts it on and runs off to a new life.
Trix attack Musa’s house!  Riven jumps in front of an ice blast and gets frozen!  The rest of the Winx arrive.  Flora uses her petal thing to blast Darcy into a tree.
Icy stops Stormy from attacking.  Hmm.  Is that a hint?  I keep expecting to see moments of thoughtfulness or hesitation from Icy as hints of the prize we’re getting in a few episodes, but so far this is the only time I’ve noticed a serious expression on her face.  How late WAS this prize added in?  Or are the writers just bad at foreshadowing? I mean, no judgment, I’M bad at foreshadowing, but with a visual medium you have the chance to put an uncertain expression on someone’s face while other characters are turned away, that’s just so basic...
The Trix flee.
Poor riven doesn’t look so good, but Bloom uses Dragonfire to heal him.  And she SAYS Dragonfire, so that’s still a thing!
And then, what else, a concert!  Musa and Riven play the sofa harp and the others play their usual instruments.  Galatea, Musa’s dad, and the punk kids watch.  It’s about like all the other songs, but the harp music does add something.
Then we have another romantic moment with Musa and Riven.
Next time: beach! Tec and Aisha fighting!

A Day to Remember
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
“This is it,” Sydney Sandiego thought to herself. The day she had dreamed of since she was a little girl was finally coming true. It was her wedding day, the day where she and Stella, the most beautiful, smart, amazing woman she had ever met would finally be together forever. As she put the final adjustments on her dress, she heard a knock at the door.
“Hi, honey. Are you almost ready? We can’t wait to see you.”
“Coming, Mom!” Sydney chirped. She couldn’t wait for everyone to see her. Moments later, she opened the door and glided down the stairs, adoring how regal her gown made her feel. Like a princess. The second she reached the bottom of the stairs, all eyes fell on her.
“How do I look?” she asked, finding it impossible not to smile.
“Wow, Syd. You look wicked awesome!” Zack beamed, giving a thumbs up.
“Yeah. I’ll bet Stella’s gonna be breathless when she sees you walking down the aisle.” Ivy added.
Gray smiled, tearing up slightly, “You look beautiful, Sydney. Just like your mother did on our wedding day.”
“You look beautiful as always, sweetheart.” Carmen finished, going over to hug her daughter, “I can’t believe it. My daughter is getting married.”
Sydney was overjoyed to hear such sweet words from them, and as her bridesmaids Mari and Rika plus maid of honor Mishka came down in their lavender dresses, they too showed their approval and adoration for Sydney.
“OMG, Syd! That is SO pretty and so you!” Mari squealed as Rika gave a happy nod of agreement.
“They’re right, you know.” Mishka piped up in her usual quiet, soft tone. “You do look really nice.”
Sydney couldn’t believe that she felt even better than before thanks to the approval of her friends, and she felt as ready as ever to walk down that aisle.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Meanwhile, at the Bordeaux-Rivera household, a certain young lady was also excitedly anticipating her wedding ceremony. Her dads, twin brother/ best man, “aunts”, “uncles” and her bridesmen were also eager to see her in her wedding dress. When Stella came out in her white dress, her long dark hair cascading over her left shoulder, the room went speechless.
“Ay, mi Estrellita.” Antonio sighed, embracing his daughter, “How did time go by so fast? One minute, you’re just a little girl, and the next you’re here, about to get married.”
“You look lovely, mon cœur.” Jean Paul added, “like a true princesse.”
“Yeah, sis.” Monty smiled, adjusting his pink bow tie “According to my calculations, there’s a hundred percent chance that you look awesome.”
Stella couldn’t help but beam joyously. Everyone was so nice to her, even her usually cold Aunt Sheena gave her a happy look and said, “You look good, kid.” Stella felt especially grateful to Daniel and Louis who, with the help of their father Dash, had tailor made both her and Sydney’s dresses (though Stella hadn’t seen Sydney’s and vice versa). A few minutes later, they got ready to leave, and Stella’s rush of excitement only grew.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It was finally here, the moment everyone had been waiting for: the wedding.
The gentle classical music signaled the start as Mari and Rika made their way down the aisle arm in arm with Daniel and Louis, followed by Mishka and Monty, and then it was time for the brides. First came Sydney, led by her mother and father, walking like the graceful dancer she was and smiling all the way. As she walked, she noticed all the ones she loved looking back at her, like her Aunt Ivy, Uncle Zack, Aunt Julia, Uncle Chase, and all the others she held dear. When she reached the end, she looked back at her parents, hugged them, then they sat down. When it was Stella’s turn, both her dads walked her down, and she too embraced them before continuing on to Sydney. By then both girls were blushing at how beautiful the other looked to her.
“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the marriage between Sydney and Estrella. There is no reason for anyone to object to this Union, so I’m not even going to ask. Now, Sydney, you may recite your vow to Estrella.”
Sydney was nothing short of jubilant and was crying happy tears as she spoke,
“I, Sydney Julia Sandiego, take you, Estrella Mireille Bordeaux-Rivera, to be my lawfully wedded wife. I promise to love you, to cherish you, and to always be there for you, in sickness and health, in hope and despair, in the good, the bad, and everything in between, till death do us part.”
“Very nice. Now Estrella, you may begin.”
Stella too had happiness and tears laced in her voice, “I, Estrella Mireille Bordeaux-Rivera, take you, Sydney Julia Sandiego to be my lawfully wedded wife. I promise to love you, to cherish you, and to always be there for you, in sickness and health, in hope and despair, in the good, the bad, and everything in between, till death do us part.”
“Then by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you wives. You both may kiss your bride.”
As their lips pressed, everyone cheered. But to Sydney and Stella, the only thing that mattered was that they were truly together forever. They were going to live happily ever after.

Well that’s it! Leave feedback in the comments, and I’m open to compliments and constructive criticism, but as always, please no put downs or anything rude.
Thank you! God bless!

"Food" and Family: The Photographer on Her Mum, Vegetarian Myths and Why She Will Never Be Martha Stewart
June 1, 2012-- Wallstreet Journal
Mary McCartney takes one look at me and begins dictating her favorite breakfast smoothie recipe: one banana, a tablespoon of milled flax seeds, one cup of rice milk, a small tablespoon of superfood powder and a scoop of whey protein. "That way, you will be set up for the day," she says, regarding me in a maternal, slightly concerned fashion. "I mean, when did you last eat?" I have known McCartney for 15 years. She shot her first fashion pictures for me when I was editor at Frank magazine in 1998, to accompany the diary her sister Stella wrote about putting together her first collection for the fashion brand Chloé. Over the years, as her fame as a photographer has grown, we have worked together on various projects. Now, as working mums on the same school run, we continue to bump into each other, occasionally stopping to chat and compare teenage-boy war stories. McCartney last year gave birth to her fourth child — her second son with film director Simon Aboud; she has two others with former husband Alistair Donald. This month, the 42-year-old launched her cookbook "Food," inspired by the memory, cooking methods and recipes of her beloved mother, the late Linda McCartney. Mary has been a consultant on her mother's brand Linda McCartney Foods for over a decade.
My mum was a rock 'n' roll cook.
She cooked more on instinct than by measuring. She appreciated food. She would never, for example, have eaten a Mars bar when she could eat really good chocolate.
For mum, the kitchen was the social hub.
She always liked people coming in and hanging out with her while she cooked. I'm the same. I like to cook for a reason—mainly for the kids, or if I have friends coming over.
My parents would challenge each other to cook great veggie meals.
My dad was always saying: Right, well, if I'm no longer eating meat, then what can we eat that is as delicious? He is a northern guy, and everything at that time revolved around the meat on the plate. It still does, I think, as opposed, for example, to Italy, where meat is just an ingredient, not the main constituent of a meal.
There's a preconception that veggie food is complicated and time-consuming.
I wanted to dispel that. I like to spend about 30 minutes or less on a recipe, and I use ingredients that are easily obtainable.
My mum never wore an apron when she cooked, and neither do I.
When I look back on her style, I think of it as easy and cool. The kitchen was no different to anywhere else in terms of how she dressed. I think if you are relaxed, it comes through in your cooking. I will admit, though, that having a mum who wore weird stuff and argyle socks was kind of embarrassing when I was at school.
My boys cook with me.
I learned so much from my mum about where food comes from and how to prepare it; I figure they will do the same. Plus, they are much more likely to eat it if they have had a hand in preparing it.
I always said no to writing a book because it's not my arena.
I'm a people person, which is why I'm a photographer—I like to tell a story with pictures not words. Writing is too much like homework. But then, because I support Meat Free Mondays and I wanted to illustrate to people that veggie food can be interesting and easy, I agreed. When the book first arrived, I looked at it and thought: Now, this is why I did it.
Actually, I finally said yes to the book because my husband pitched the idea to me.
He has an advertising background, so he's very persuasive. He pitched the idea of us having this recent baby, too.
Food carries with it so many memories of my family.
My sister does the same thing with clothes that I do with food. When I look at Stella's collections, I see a bit of my mum's boho and vintage influence and some of my American grandfather's seersucker, lawyer-suits vibe. When I go to watch Stella's runway shows, I feel very nostalgic.
I read a recent review of my book and it said, "nice pictures, but I bet she didn't come up with the recipes."
I was like, What!?, because I came up with all the recipes, which were really what I grew up with but healthier—my mum used a lot of cream. I try to enhance what I already know and love, and make it indulgent but good for you.
I tried to treat the food I was photographing like I would the portrait of a person.
There was no food varnishing on my shoots—I didn't even have a prop stylist. It was manic. I was making the food, then putting it onto or into vintage-y plates and bowls, then sticking it somewhere like a windowsill and framing the shot. As a family, we have bad memories of chargrilled vegetables and couscous, which was traditionally all that was on offer in restaurants in the '70s if you were vegetarian. Consequently, neither appears in my book or on my table—ever!
Everything that surrounds food is really complicated.
There's so much shame attached to what we eat and guilt about what we weigh. I think celebrating good, healthy food is part of the answer. Wouldn't it be interesting if every person in the country could have a therapy session about how they feel about food?
I have a very clear memory of the first time food changed my mood.
I was having a bad day and my aunt took me out, and I had a grilled cheese sandwich, chips and a milkshake. I remember realizing afterward that the meal had actually made me feel better.
My step-grandmother on my mum's side taught me to bake.
She was French and a little scary—always saying things like: Children do not run in the apartment. But when I got older, we became friends through cooking. She taught me the value of measuring things and of having an oven thermometer. Those two things are fundamental to my cooking today.
My dad loves home baking, and I think there's a link between my interest in food and making people happy.
I love it if everyone eats everything on their plate.
You can tell a good restaurant by the excellence of their vegetarian dishes or menu.
I like Raymond Blanc's Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, E&O in Notting Hill, Le Caprice and Scott's — places with a nice ambience.
I'm a huge fan of straightforward, chuck-it-all-in cooks like Nigel Slater and Jamie Oliver, who celebrate food, and I detest anything complicated.
What's the deal with all that foamy, fiddly stuff?
I remember my childhood as very normal.
We went to a comprehensive, where we kept our heads down because we didn't want to be seen as different. We ate at a certain time, did our homework and, every so often, we'd go on an amazing trip somewhere that would remind us that our circumstances weren't quite like everyone else's.
I think part of the reason my dad looks so good is that he eats properly.
He would never skip a meal. Often, if he's on his own, he will eat something from my mum's range and make himself vegetables or a salad.
I'm not going to become a Martha Stewart.
There are no books planned on how my kitchen or home looks. I can't even remember the name of the cooker I use, except to say that it's a double oven and it's good. I have been approached a number of times about doing a cooking show for TV. My husband is pitching me on that now, so we'll see what happens.
I'm obsessed by Amelia Rope—a chocolate range available at Liberty.
It's really expensive, so I eat a tiny bit at a time. I love the Pale Lime with Sea Salt. [Also] Cire Trudon candles—again very expensive, so I don't buy too many, but I love all of the fragrances.
I like to be comfortable and practical, but stylish....
I want to be able to walk wherever I go. I wear my sister Stella's clothes a lot, but never the whole look. I mix everything up, which is what my mum did, so I'd wear Stella's trousers with a vintage blouse, a nice knit cardi and flip flops. I wear Stella's L.I.L.Y. [standing for Linda I Love You], Penhaligon's Bluebell and Agent Provocateur's Maitresse Gold, which my husband bought me.
I'm very inspired by my mum.
She liked vintage—pretty tea dresses and nice knits. I can't see a piece of neon clothing without thinking of her.
Stocking a Kitchen, Mary McCartney-Style
•Heavy-bottomed frying pans: small, medium and large
•Nonstick frying pans: large (around 28 centimeters) and small or medium (around 20 centimeters)
•Magimix food processor—but I prefer hand-chopping
•Chopping boards in various sizes—I'm a Virgo, so I need to control the size of everything that's chopped. Two large, wooden boards for veg and one dedicated to fruit, so you don't get garlic or onion flavor on fruit.
•Kitchen Aid mixer for baking
•Roasting and cake tins
•Sharp knives: a selection of approximately six in a wooden block; my favorite is the 13-centimeter, serrated vegetable chopping knife.
•Wooden spoons
•Spatulas
•Veg and zest peelers
•Weighing scales
•Oven thermometer

⧼    stella maeve, cis female, she & her   /   abrahams daughter by arcade fire   +   a full moon hanging high in the star speckled sky, skimming the surface of undisturbed snow and drenching in its light the tops of endless evergreen trees and the decrepit cabin you grew up in. your body is more scar tissue than it is unblemished skin, and all you know is how to bare your teeth as if they’re fangs and treat your fingernails like claws. there’s blood on your trembling hands and it doesn’t belong to you, but that won’t stop it from staining everything that you touch.    ⧽   ━━   let me tell you a thing or two about VICTORIA CREED. the TWENTY EIGHT year old child of VICTOR CREED ( LOGAN HOWLETT & SILVERFOX ) is a wayward soul in town, and has sometimes been referred to as THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB. they’ve always seemed very INTUITIVE & METICULOUS, though i’ve heard that they can be pretty CALCULATING & RUTHLESS, too. it’s common knowledge that they have the powers of CLAW RETRACTION, REGENERATIVE HEALING & ENHANCED SENSES ; guess we shouldn’t get on their bad side, huh? redirect HERE for her stat page and HERE to her pinterest board.
and THREATS are just PROMISES   you actually WANT to keep.
BULLET POINT HISTORY trigger warnings for kidnapping, death, blood, child abuse / neglect,  murder, brief mention of assault.
VICTORIA CREED was born in violence. maybe that’s why it’s become all she’s ever known. she never had a CHANCE to be soft - she never had a chance at being someone ELSE. silver fox brought logan howlett the wolverine peace, at a time when it still seemed HARD to grasp. she made him happy. and he, in turn, made her the same, and for providing him with a softness and a kind of forgiveness, he made her feel SAFE. from their love sprung into existence a new life, one that might’ve stood a CHANCE if it hadn’t been for the monsters that hid around every corner of logan’s life. the baby was a SECRET. silver fox worried about what might happen, if anyone knew - and six months gone, she PLANNED on telling him on the eve of his birthday, though it never happened. instead, a monster reared his head. as she died, as her LIGHT went out, silver fox BEGGED for mercy - for her AND THE BABY. it was impulsive, certainly not a part of any plan he had for petty pain, but victor “saved” the child.
no one who would have mattered ever knew about her. with what victor did, to the body… identifying SILVER FOX was hard enough. no one knew she had been with child, and it was sort of perfect, for victor. in this baby he saw an opportunity for a RECKONING of logan’s OWN MAKING. of course she had to survive, first, and he was lucky that her mutation kickstarted as she came into the world - without rapid healing, the preterm and soon christened victoria creed would have died before she could ever have been utilized. she survived, and nobody was looking for her, and with a whole life ahead of her in which she could be molded, victor found himself a WEAPON.
she was never a CHILD. she was HIS DAUGHTER, he raised her as such and he told her as much with a GROWL, but she was not a child. she wasn’t nurtured, or loved. they lived together for a brief amount of time in a cabin, somewhere deep in the canadian wilderness, somewhere that no one would ever find HER - but even when she was young, he had a penchant for disappearing, and when she was FIVE, he started to do that more and more. victoria was never mollycoddled or given a chance to be what she was. she didn’t get to play with other kids, or experience the world around her like a NORMAL child might have. she learned to be SELF-SUFFICIENT, because if she wasn’t, she would DIE. it was that simple.
she learned other lessons, too. victoria was an investment. she was a long term sort of thing - and he treated her more as such than he did a loved daughter, like an actually LOVING FATHER might have. eventually, she would be used to hurt the very people that she SHOULD have cared for. that meant when she was growing, she needed to learn to be a KILLER. her earliest memories, outside of the LONELINESS, are of the metallic taste of warm blood - hunting trips deep into the forest surrounding the cabin, where she was shoved towards mountain lions and grizzlies that would either KILL or be KILLED. he always watched. watched, but never helped - and when she succeeded in toppling the beast, she was not rewarded with words of praise.
for too long, she was too young to understand that this was not the way in which normal fathers treated their daughters. they did not rip their children apart, body and mind. they weren’t forced to KILL, or beaten until they could land a GOOD PUNCH. other kids had birthday parties and a kiss atop their forehead goodnight. victoria never had such luxuries.
his visits to the cabin weren’t frequent. sometimes, she could go weeks without ever having to see him, and in that time, she learnt other things, outside of ABUSE. she learnt the sounds of the forest and how to imitate them. she learnt how to control her mutations, use them for her own good, instead of HIS. she EXPLORED, leaving the cabin daily and running through the area, experiencing the limited world allowed to her.
once, she strayed so far off the track he had told her she could walk in the forest and stumbled across a VILLAGE - the first people to spot the barefoot child as she emerged from the trees with twigs in her wild hair and dirt smudged across her body had gone white faced with shock. they took care of her. brought her to an apartment above a bar, gave her a warm bath - it was the first time she’d ever experienced one - gave her food that wasn’t RAW, told her she could sleep safely in a soft bed that night, while they ‘looked for her parents’. she wouldn’t realize for many years that these people assumed she was a lost child, though she told them, then, how her father was a big, SCARY man, and that she had done some SCARY things. they didn’t believe her. they thought that it was the ravings of a terrified young girl. they allowed her to stay for two weeks. TWO WEEKS of CARE, something she had never had before, and then victor returned and tracked her to the bar, where he slaughtered the customers and found his way upstairs. she awoke to the stench of blood and death and she knew it was him before she had even made her way to the living room, where the owner and his wife lay, bound. this was the first night that victoria killed what WASN’T game - under the watchful gaze of his devil eyes, she didn’t have a CHOICE.
after this, he began to take her with him when he left, sometimes. he had always had ties with the hand, and somewhere along the way, he must have gotten back involved with them. victoria didn’t understand - SHE WAS STILL YOUNG - but she didn’t need to, to do what they wanted. they traveled the world and she saw it all with new eyes, experiencing things that she never could have DREAMED UP in the four walls of the cabin, and along the way, new lessons began. she had always had to FIGHT. it was the only way to make the pain stop, when he started, and sometimes fighting had kept her ALIVE. now he learned to fight for other reasons and he called it ‘training’, but when it came to a hand issued job, all bets were off. victoria wasn’t kept safe by victor. if she needed saving, she needed to do that for HERSELF. this, he said, taught her to be strong. when she had to kill someone along the way, when she hit an animal rage that had been ingrained into her and kept on going - she was learning to be RUTHLESS, and this was a trait that he liked.
he never did care for her. as she got older and began to understand certain things more and more, victoria knew that the neglect, the abuse - they were WRONG. but they were all that she had ever known, and in a way that only children of abuse can understand, she did BELIEVE that he cared. that was why she always did as he said. it was why she never questioned him, when he pointed one way and told her to KILL. LOYALTY. it forms in unlikely places, and it does so with strength that’s hard to break. a mutant in LA during a hand related deal put his hand on victoria’s ass, once, and victor didn’t blink as he ripped that man’s arm right out of his socket. nevermind that months later, he would leave her in tokyo alone for six months. nevermind that he tried to murder her when she was thirteen because she didn’t want to hurt a girl that was close in age to HER. nevermind that three years after that, she spent nine months a prisoner in YEMEN, all so she could kill someone on the INSIDE that victor wanted gone. NEVERMIND that the only reason he sought retribution during that deal gone wrong was snarled not to long later ; because she was HIS. because she always WOULD be.
he was all she KNEW. the life she had led at his mercy was all she KNEW. the limited emotions she was permitted to experience with him were again - all she KNEW. it isn’t that victoria doesn’t recognize that he’s wrong. that everything he’s done, everything she’s done, is WRONG, too - it’s that she doesn’t know anything else, and she’s never stood a chance of it since the day that she entered into this world.
she’s loyal to him, because at the end of the day, the life that he’s given her is the only one she’s ever HAD.
WHAT YOU MISSED ON GLEE:
since this intro was written, victoria arrived in town and set about doing what her ‘father’ asked of her - she killed one of the wolverines grandchildren, she attacked two of his daughters. she would have died for her actions when she finally came face to face with him, had it not been for logan realizing at the last moment that her scent was a mix of HIM & his lost love. it didn’t take a rocket scientist for him to guess what had happened.
she’s been at paragon ever since ; uneasily awaiting the day that either the father who she grew knowing as so comes and gets her, or she is forced to run. the only reason she HASN’T yet is because she has amends to make with the real family who she hurt, and vicki wants to try and do that before it’s too late. she’s aware that someday, she will die, and the life she lives now is one spent looking perpetually over her shoulder for the unmistakable shadow of victor creed - but if, in the few weeks she knows she has left, she can salvage a fraction of her soul - she thinks that dying for what she’s done, and what she has failed to do, won’t be quite as bad.
