#bi/pan rep

"She-Ra is bad bisexual rep because all the bi/pan characters end up in m/f relationships!"
Not true! Perfuma is bi/pan and she ends up with Scorpia!
"Oh, well I like to headcanon Perfuma as a lesbian."
...so then you understand that's not the show's fault, right? That that's just a problem you made up in your head?
-
Excuse me a second, I need to scream about this...
Because this has come up over and over (esp on Twitter and TikTok) with people who want to claim that every bi/pan SPOP character ends up in a m/f relationship... by conveniently pretending Perfuma is not canonically bi/pan herself. And every time they are asked to elaborate why they are ignoring her canon status, they give the same answer: that they consider Perfuma a lesbian because now that she's with a woman, she's "not bi anymore"
And... yeah... you know that's not how it works, right? That being bi/pan is not just a phase you get over? That a bi/pan woman dating another woman doesn't suddenly make her a lesbian any more than it makes a bi/pan person dating someone of the opposite gender magically straight?
The person you are currently dating does not change your bi/pan status. Ever. And insisting it does, especially just so you can score some points by making up an issue about a show to be mad about, is super GD harm harmful to the real bi/pan people in your life.
(This is the exact same thing The Owl House fandom does with Lumity and why Dana had to make Luz present a whole slideshow in the cartoon reminding everyone she is still very much bi even though Amity is a lesbian. TOH fans kept insisting because Luz is dating Amity now, she's a lesbian. Nope. Her and Amity can be married for a billion years and that wouldn't change Luz's orientation.)

"But I heard that someone's roommate's cousin who worked with someone on the show once liked a fanart that showed Scorfuma with the lesbian flag so it's basically canon!"
First of all, the legend of this grows daily and I think it's really telling that this archival obsessed fandom only talks about this mythical like and yet has never been able to produce a single screenshot of it.
But for the sake of argument, let's say that this really happened and actually exists, that someone related to the show, however distantly, liked fanart once that implied Perfuma was a lesbian somehow. That still doesn't make it canon. People related to the show and even ND himself have liked and reblogged all sorts of stuff that isn't canon, including g/a, and have been very clear that the only canon is what happens within the show itself.
And, in the show, Perfuma is canonically bi/pan. We see her crushing on Bow, She-Ra, Huntara and Scorpia. The fact that people want to pretend the Bow thing never happened when he's the only character we see her actually date over the run of the show AND it's a major Season 1 plot point is wild to me and just shows the lengths people will go for bi/pan erasure.
And I get that some people enjoy using Perfuma to tell a story about comphet or coming out as a lesbian later in life and I am fully in favor of doing your thing with your headcanons in fanworks. But when it reaches the point it has now where fans are attacking other fans for saying Perfuma is bi/pan or attacking the show for not having any bi/pan character in same sex relationships when Perfuma is CANONICALLY bi/pan is ridiculous.
Keep in mind that your headcanon is literally just something you made up in your head. It's pretend. Fun, yes, but NOT something you can use as justification to attack people over!
Especially when it's something like this that causes real world harm by perpetuating harmful stereotypes about bi/pan people being "just a phase" or a temporary state that changes based on who you date.

“the lgbtq+ community is over-represented in media, specifically in regard to sexuality” is a statistical error. riverdale, who confirmed 90% of its characters to be gay or bisexual by the series finale, is an outlier and should not have been counted (but should be normalised).

Now, listen. Heartstopper has given us so much good representation. We’ve gotten gay rep, bi rep, lesbian rep, trans rep, even aro/ace rep (and I believe some enby rep but I’m not sure). But I think it could be even more. Because now that we’re being shown inklings of Imogen being a little bit fruity, I think it’d be great if we got some pansexual rep.

Like, it’d be so good. As far as I’m aware there aren’t any pansexual characters in Heartstopper (yet!), so I think Imogen would be the perfect character to have that arc with

As a romantic asexual I headcanon just about every single character (and ship) I like as asexual/on the ace spectrum. I just feel there's not enough representation of non-sexual beings engaged in romantic love in popular media. I'd really love it if more stories explored good and fulfilling partnerships that thrive even without sexual intimacy. I'm not against characters being sexy or having sex I think it's just really neat when figures can exist and fall in love without a big part of the relationship revolving around fucking. I love when people, ace or not, can explore their sexuality on their own terms and set boundaries that are accepted and respected by their partners. I love when they realize they're more than their body and what their body is able to provide in terms of sexual fulfillment. I love emotional intimacy independent of the pressure of sex.

everytime there’s a relationship in a piece of media where one is bi and one is ‘pan’ i’ll simply just headcanon that the bi character educates the other character about the inherent biphobia of mspec labels. though it would be nice if the creator of the media educated themselves in the first place, that’s not easy to ask for, so.
(radfems don’t touch my post🤢)

"[Canon Bisexual Character] should have been [gay / lesbian] so they ended up with [Same Sex Character]!"
Wow. That's so interesting! Because there is literally no reason you can't ship that bisexual character with the same sex character as is. No one on earth is stopping you. Bisexual people are attracted to the same sex. You can ship away without changing a single thing about them!
But you keep insisting they should have been lesbian or gay so they could date the same sex and... gosh. It almost seems like... you just hate that they are bisexual!
Huh. Fascinating.

If Huntlow is like Todomomo, then Hunt///ric is like Todo///baku.Yes i will elaborate:Hunter and Shouto are familial abuse survivors who it didn't take very long into the series' to stop being assholes and we watched them grow from repressed jerks to absolute sweethearts thanks to their friends' love while B*kugou and Ed///ric bullied people who they were supposed to be kind to-Izuku(who was B*kugou's friend)and Amity(who is Ed///ric's little sister)-for years and it took the former over 300 chapters and at least a year in-universe to apologize to his victim but is still not nice to them and almost all of the latter's development was off-screen.Yet despite Momo being Shouto's second best friend and Willow being Hunter's best friend period,it's very common for Todob*ku and Hunt///ric shippers to dunk on them being attracted to eachother because they think it's 'forced' that they are-as if it's more 'realistic' for people who've been mistreated almost their whole lives to fall in love with bullies, especially since the first pair has one of them constantly being verbally and physically violent to the other and the second one having exchanged literally two lines to eachother that were merely a joke, than for them to fall in love with people who are helping them heal from their trauma and who they're shown multiple times to enjoy hanging out with. The reason for this is that B*kugou and Ed///ric get too much credit from the fandoms while Willow and Momo don't get enough, which is very ironic considering Hunter and Shouto themselves have spoken better of and been nicer to them in canon than they've ever been to the Toh and Bnha fandom's favorite 'misunderstood gay idiots'

Being a bisexual man isn’t easy – something Vaneet Mehta knows all too well. After spending more than a decade figuring out his identity, Vaneet’s coming out was met with questioning, ridicule and erasure. This experience inspired Vaneet to create the viral #BisexualMenExist campaign, combatting the hate and scepticism m-spec (multi-gender attracted spectrum) men encounter, and helping others who felt similarly alone and trapped.
This powerful book is an extension of that fight. Navigating a range of topics, including coming out, dating, relationships and health, Vaneet shares his own lived experience as well as personal stories from others in the community to help validate and uplift other bisexual men. Discussing the treatment of m-spec men in LGBTQ+ places, breaking down stereotypes and highlighting the importance of representation and education, this empowering book is a rallying call for m-spec men everywhere.
