a cute coming-out scene from 佐々木と宮野 vol. 7!

note: if this photo is too hard to read, i wrote a transcription (with added punctuation for clarity) and translation below! also, light spoilers for 佐々木と宮野 by 春園ショウ ahead.

i watched the anime of 佐々木と宮野 some months ago and thought it was so sweet, so i started reading some of the manga too! this spread is from volume 7, the second-to-last one (so far), where sasaki and miyano have already decided to go out. i had never read or seen a coming-out scene in japanese before, and it’s not that explicitly about “coming out,” but i thought it was handled really well and really cute besides so i decided to share it with you guys!

the context for this scene is that miyano has invited sasaki over to make chocolates for valentine’s day, which in japan traditionally involves girls giving candy to boys: 「伝統的に『女性が男性にチョコレートを贈る日』」. (this is generally reciprocated later on ホワイトデー, if you’re interested in more about the tradition.) since it’s slightly unusual that miyano would want to give someone, especially another boy, chocolate on valentine’s day, he feels the need to explain to his mom about it. she even says afterward, 「最近は男の子からあげたりもするものね」, showing that the tradition has become broader in recent years.

i love this scene so much mostly because of miyano’s mom, who immediately understands that this is a really big deal for her son, so she tries to keep it as chill as possible. when she says, 「ママもパパのこと好き」, as if what she and miyano experience are exactly the same, i thought that was a really lovely way to show her trying to relate to her son (and succeeding imo!). i found this line really touching in how heartfelt yet simple it was.

there’s also the little detail at the end about how she starts crying, which i think we can interpret in a couple ways. the more pessimistic answer is maybe that she didn’t expect to have a queer child so she’s shocked, but i don’t think that really tracks with the rest of the conversation. to me, it more feels like she’s surprised that she herself became so overwhelmed (「えっ、なにー」). i wonder if maybe she feels very happy and emotional that miyano trusted her enough to tell her these things, and ofc that her son is growing up and doing teenager stuff. i like that we get these little glimpses into other people’s experiences as miyano and sasaki navigate their relationship!

ママ：いいけど、学校の子？ mom: that’s fine, is it someone from school?

宮野：うん。先輩... miyano: yeah, my senpai...

ママ：男の子同士で準備するのねー。最近は男の子からあげたりもするものね。 mom: oh, so you want to prepare the chocolate with another boy. recently it seems like boys are giving and getting chocolate too.

PANEL 2

ママ：いいなー。今度ママにも作って。 mom: that’s wonderful. next time you’ll have to make some for me too.

宮野：あ miyano: um

PANEL 3

宮野：あげたい人、男の子なんだ。 miyano: the person i want to give them to is a boy.

PANEL 4

ママ：そうなの。今度ママにも紹介してね。 mom: is that right? you’ll have to introduce me to him, ok?

宮野：あ、うん。 miyano: um, ok.

宮野：...あのさ。その先輩と一緒にいるの楽しくて、これからも一緒にいたいって思って... す...好きで。 miyano: ...um. this senpai, it’s fun to be with him, and i feel like i want to keep being with him...i...i like him.

PANEL 2

ママ：うん、いいね、好きなの。ママもパパのこと好き。 mom: oh, that’s nice that you like him. like how i like dad too.

PANEL 3

ママ：もしかして、一緒に作る人？ mom: is this by any chance the person you’re making the chocolate with?

宮野：うん。ママ夕方までいないし。 miyano: yeah. since you won’t be home until late.

ママ：夕飯食べていってもらったら？ mom: what if he came over for dinner?

宮野：えっ⁉︎ miyano: huh??

ママ：好き嫌いとかは？ mom: do you know what food he likes?

宮野：聞いてみる... miyano: i’ll ask and see...

PANEL 4

宮野：.......母さんが親でよかった。 miyano: ......i’m so glad i have mom for a parent.

ママ（見えない）：えっ、なにー。ママ泣いちゃう。 mom (offscreen): oh, what? i just started crying.
