👨‍🔬💣💥 Why sprint interval training is NOT anaerobic. 👨‍🔬💣💥 This isn't uncommon for me to hear/see... "We're working on anaerobic/glycolytic capacity with these repeated sprints". But these statements aren't backed up by the scientific data. We perform 30 s maximum effort sprints to help our muscle cell get better at utilising oxidative energy pathways. It sounds crazy that these sprints are potent stimuli for aerobic adaptations - but they are. When you crash through the 15 to 20 s and repeat this with only partial recovery you're increasing the energy contribution from the aerobic energy system. The reason is primarily because glycolysis is switched off by acidosis to slow glycolytic flux and further increases in acidosis. Whilst the acidosis simultaneously stimulates enzymes responsible for switching on aerobic metabolism. Another reason to back your perception of exertion and again helps support why I prefer to programme based on exertion/effort and time. That doesn't mean to say external assessments of speed/power are unimportant - they are crucial in tracking your response to training. This data is from 5,500 training sessions collected over 4 years with 21 professional cyclists from Team Sunweb a hugely successful set up. . . . From the author: . . . it’s the relationship between internal and external metrics that tells you whether you’re getting fitter or overly fatigued. In training, it’s meaningless to know that your internal load is going up or down if you don’t also know whether you’re going faster or slower. In racing, it’s useless or even counterproductive to know what power output you “should” be able to maintain if you don’t also consider how you’re feeling that day. So the message here isn’t that you should ditch your power meter. It’s that you should also trust how you feel—and track it. 💣💥 KNOWLEDGE BOMB 💥💣 . . . When we think about a HIIT session there's always a rationale. They aren't just horrible smash up sessions! The major components of Red Zone running are as follows: The total time spent at a high speed - very important to determine the neuromuscular demands of the session. Typically you'll need to run fast and to do this you'll require a high % recruitment of high threshold motor units (the ones that enable us to generate high force). The total amount of time in RED - this is our estimate of the time you'll spend in our defined red zone of 90% HRmax. It takes between 60 and 90 s for your HR to attain this and so the total time in red will always be less than the total time of high speed running. . . . Each session has a physiological target ❤️ Central = The cardiovascular system - the aim here is to improve the way blood is delivered to your muscles and returned back to your heart. 🦵 Peripheral = Muscle cell level - typically what we're looking at here is your muscles ability to deal with metabolic acidosis that contributes to fatigue. 💪 Neuromuscular = Mentioned briefly above. The faster your run the higher the neuromuscular demand of the session. . . . As we progress throughout our programme we'll give you a rationale for our sessions. Everything is done for a reason.
