I’m logged on for work and should be doing stuff but what am I doing? Going through Breathe Carolina’s album Savages and breaking down the lyrics on why I think it’s a Teen Wolf album 😂
Like there’s just so many correlations to the lyrics and it makes me think of Teen Wolf.
I’ll be posting the songs and my breakdown for anyone who is interested!

Question for the author + Toby what would be his and your favorite songs??
Tumblr media
He may dance funnily to Hit the Road Jack in his spare time. Kid Toby followed the trends better.
Tumblr media
I like to think killing time fits him. I don't understand why most Toby playlists I came across consist of dying ukuleles with some sappy crying lyrics? He is chaotic and cheery, I would have put a few songs with an energetic guitar or something electro in there, nirvana, three days grace or whatever this is Shameless sharing of few fav songs I have a few energetic songs I associate with Tobs: phonk, modern emo songs, this remix, some good old and classic rock lmao I listen to Breathe Carolina a lot.

Jake 'Hangman' Seresin x Female!OC
summary: based loosely on Cole Swindell's 'She Had Me at Heads Carolina'. Penny has started a karaoke night and Jake falls head over heels for the girl singing.
t/w: alcohol, cursing, flirty!Jake, OC character. No mention of y/n
Penny had the great idea to introduce a karaoke night at the Hard Deck. Jake typically stays home during this event. Listening to drunk people butcher perfectly good songs isn’t his idea of fun.
That is, until he laid eyes on her.
Rooster badgered and badgered Jake to come out with him tonight, and he could almost kiss his friend on the mouth for it.
She tosses her red hair over her shoulder, dramatically belting out the lyrics to an old country song with her friend. Her hips move along to the beat of the song, that black dress clinging to all the right places.
Jake imagines his hands sliding across her hips and decides he has to meet her. There is no way he can miss this opportunity.
“Hey, man, you gotta little drool,” Rooster points toward Jake’s mouth, catching him staring at the woman.
“Fuck off, dude,” Jake shoves his friend with his shoulder, keeping his eyes on the object of his affection.
She and her friend finish their song and head off the makeshift stage that took Maverick a week to build.
Maverick is so whipped.
The ladies fall into one of the booths in the back, still giggling from their performance. Jake has never seen a more perfect smile.
Jake is solidified on his stool, suddenly extremely nervous to go speak with her. This is unnerving. He’s normally a huge playboy. There’s something about this girl. He doesn’t want to mess this up.
Those beautiful eyes meet his, and he gives her a smirk and a nod.
“You going to talk to her?” Rooster asks.
Jake casually wipes his sweaty palms along his jeans, praying Rooster doesn’t call him out.
“Eh, I think I’m going to let her come to me,” he says.
Rooster’s eyebrows fly to the top of his head. A shit-eating grin appears under that porn-stache. “Oh my God, you’re nervous. When have you ever been nervous to talk to a girl?” Jake shoots daggers at his so-called friend.
Jake catches those gorgeous eyes again, this time she sends a wink across the bar. His heart thumps against his chest.
God, he’s got to get her in his arms.
The jukebox begins playing music, indicating the intermission of karaoke.
When she catches his eye, he jerks his chin toward himself, silently inviting her over. After exchanging a word with her friend (and throwing back a shot), her friend practically shoves her out of the booth. She saunters over to Jake, those hips doing bad things to his thoughts.
Rooster slaps Jake on the back, making himself scarce as she stops in front of him. She’s somehow even more beautiful up close.
“Nice singing up there,” Jake gestures toward the stage.
A pink flush falls on her cheeks and she giggles. “Thank you. Alli has been trying to talk me into coming for weeks.” She throws a look over her shoulder. Jake doesn’t miss the look of approval Alli gives her.
Running a hand through his hair, he lets his arm drop across the table close to her.
Grinning, she says, “Smooth.”
“You like that? There’s more where that came from,” Jake smirks, his confidence coming back to him now that she’s in front of him. She gives him a sweet laugh, and hops up on the stool Rooster left vacant.
“You know what I’d like more?” She leans in, causing him to follow her lead. Dropping his eyes to her lips and bringing them back up to her eyes, he sees the mischief in them.
“What’s that?” he asks, a breath away from kissing this gorgeous stranger.
“I’d like to see you up there,” she smirks. Jake sits back straight in his chair, definitely not thinking this was where she was going.
“Oh, I don’t sing, baby,” he tells her, laying the pet name on thick, so she can tell his intentions.
Leaning back in her own stool, she shrugs. “Man, that’s too bad. You look like you could do a mean Tim McGraw.”
Jake takes a swig of his beer. “I absolutely can. I just do a better job in my truck.” Throwing her a wink, he adds, “We could go check it out, if you’d like.” She was eating this up.
“You’d like that, huh?”
“I really would.”
She holds his gaze, and Jake finds himself having to break it first, her beauty and flirting almost too much.
“I’d really like a drink, Cowboy,” she says, reaching out to rest her hand on his outstretched arm. Her soft hand causes immediate goosebumps. No girl has ever caused that reaction before.
“Done.” After getting her order, he approaches Penny, but not before checking her out over his shoulder. She gives her friend a thumbs up, and his stomach flips. Penny hands him her drink and rejoins her.
She takes it from him, humming her thanks before taking a sip. “Look, I get if you’re nervous to go up there, but it’s really a blast.”
“I’m not nervous, honey.”
“Prove it,” she smiles over her drink. Jake certainly isn’t one to back down from a challenge. Especially when the challenger is as gorgeous as she is.
“What do I get if I do it?” he asks.
“What about my name?” she says.
“Make it your number, and you’ve got yourself a deal, darlin’.”
“We’ll see.” Her eyes sparkle under the lowlights of the bar, daring him to get up on the stage. Jake throws back the remainder of his beer and heads over toward the karaoke system, queuing up his song. Tim McGraw, of course.
As he gets on stage, he spots Rooster laughing with the guys, giving him a thumbs up. If this is what Jake had to do to get closer to her, the embarrassment of singing in front of the dagger squad will be worth it.
Jake gives the absolute best performance of his life, working the crowd with his rendition of “Somethin’ Like That.” Keeping his eyes on her, he feeds in to her cheers and whoops. At the conclusion of the song, he walks over to her, holding her gaze the entire time.
Jake stops in front of her, invading her bubble a little bit. His hand rests on the chair above her shoulder. Leaning in, he asks, “What’s your name, sweetheart?”
She looks up at him under her eyelashes and he almost comes undone. “Eliza.”
“Eliza,” he murmurs, testing the name.
She reaches up, and takes his collar in her hands. “Should we go check out how well you sing in your truck?”
Jake groans. He can’t help it, not knowing what is going to happen in that truck.
“Lead the way, Liza,” he says.
a/n: I am still so thankful for all the love on my fics! I hope y'all like this one!

Died With a Hammer in His Hand: Unpacking the Myth of John Henry
“John Henry said to his captain:  ‘You are nothing but a common man,  Before that steam drill shall beat me down,  I’ll die with my hammer in my hand.’”  — “John Henry, the Steel Driving Man,” recounted by W. T. Blankenship
John Henry is one of America’s most well-known mythic heroes, immortalized in song, statue, postage stamp, and multiple movies (including a 2000 Disney animated short film which I vividly remember watching in elementary school). But if you’re unfamiliar with the legend, here’s a brief summary.
John Henry was a freed slave who found himself working for a railroad company in the years following the Civil War as a steel driver. His job was to drive a steel spike into rock so that dynamite could be placed in the resulting hole, thus opening up a tunnel through the Appalachians.
John Henry was the best on his crew, and he took pride in his work—so when a white salesman brought in a steam-powered drill, claiming that it could drill better than any man, he decided to challenge that claim. Henry entered into a contest with the machine to see who could carve out the deepest hole in the mountain in a single day.
His victory cost him his life.
Henry’s wife—sometimes named Polly Ann, sometimes named Lucy, sometimes not named at all—went to visit him on his deathbed that evening. In many versions of the ballad, Henry’s last words are a request for a glass of water. In other versions, he asks his wife to be true to him when he’s dead, or to do her best to raise their son. Many accounts say that he’s buried by a railroad, where “Every locomotive come roarin’ by, / Says there lays that steel drivin’ man” (lyrics from Onah L. Spencer).
Tumblr media

The general consensus among historians now seems to be that the ballad of John Henry is one such legend that has its roots in historical fact, although the particulars are long obscured by the centuries that have since passed. Henry was born into slavery in the 1840s or 50s, either in North Carolina or Virginia (some accounts of the ballad lend credence to the latter claim). As for how John Henry found himself working for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway company, University of Georgia history professor Scott Reynolds Nelson posits in his book Steel Drivin’ Man that the man was sentenced to ten years in a Virginia prison for theft at only nineteen years of age, and that he was among many prisoners leased out by the state for labor.
Did you know that the 13th Amendment makes an exception for slavery which is used “as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted”? (This practice continues to this day, and has become an industry worth tens of billions of dollars. Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as Angola or simply “The Farm,” is a good place to begin if you’re wanting to look into chain gangs further.) John Henry the legend was a free worker who took on the backbreaking, often dangerous work of railroad labor under his own power and could demand any wage for his work, but John Henry the man may have lived and died in neoslavery.
Speaking of Henry’s death, most retellings of the myth say that he died of sheer exhaustion. Some add in the detail that it was his heart that gave out because he worked himself too hard. However, alternate theories have been proposed for how the man died. Some historians say it was a stroke that killed him, while others posit silicosis.
It’s this latter hypothesis which I find most intriguing. For those who aren’t familiar with it, the American Lung Association describes silicosis as “a lung disease caused by breathing in tiny bits of silica, a common mineral found in sand, quartz and many other types of rock.” It’s been an occupational hazard for construction workers since, well, the time of John Henry. What I find interesting are the implications for the narrative if the real Henry died of silicosis. In the folk ballad, Henry causes his own death by working himself too hard. On the other hand, the ones at fault if the man died of silicosis would be his employers—the ones responsible for the dangerous conditions he worked in.
So why would John Henry’s cause of death change during the transition from fact to legend?
The answer, as with many other fictionalized accounts of historical events, is that it simply makes for a more effective story. But not just that—a more effective message. So what might the ballad be trying to tell those who listen to it?
First, let’s think about who this song was sung by and for. The ballad of John Henry is a work song, its rhythm meant to help railroad workers stay and strike in sync, in the same way a drumbeat helps soldiers march in step. It’s been sung by railroad workers, miners, construction workers, chain gangs, and country musicians. At its core, then, the ballad is a song of and for the American working class—specifically those people doing the same sort of backbreaking physical labor as John Henry himself. Many of these laborers would have been Black, and likely former slaves—especially when it came to Southern chain gangs. (See my above note about how American slavery was only mostly abolished, and then think about why the U.S. has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. . . but I digress.)
Tumblr media
An oil painting of John Henry by Frederick Brown.
We’ve established that John Henry is a hero for working-class Americans during the time of the Second Industrial Revolution. But what sort of hero is he? Is he like Achilles, a paragon of his country’s values and an example for the audience to aspire to? Or is he an Icarus, a cautionary tale sung so the audience won’t repeat his mistakes?
The answer depends on who’s telling the story.
Onah L. Spencer is the source for one version which emerged from a Black community in Cincinnati, Ohio. When he recounted the lyrics to Guy B. Johnson for the latter’s 1929 book John Henry: Tracking Down a Negro Legend, he also stated that the song was used to motivate workers: “. . . if there was a slacker in a gang of workers it would stimulate him with its heroic masculine appeal.”
In cases such as Spencer’s crew, then, John Henry’s death is presented as glorious, and Henry is seen as admirable for working so hard that it kills him. Here, he’s a good example. Taken to the extreme, the Achillean Henry encourages fellow workers to follow in his footsteps—to keep pushing themselves harder and harder until they finally keel over.
This message doesn’t benefit the workers passing it along; it benefits the employers profiting from their labor. This, I think, is where the story blurs the line between myth and propaganda. And while the ballad of John Henry certainly isn’t singlehandedly responsible for the American tendency to overwork ourselves, it does reflect our attitudes about work in a way that’s worth unpacking. To me, this reeks of the Puritan work ethic. The belief was that you had to be working as often as you could; if you didn’t, the devil would be able to influence you. The Puritans were one of America’s foundational cultural influences—of course those values would have influenced the ballad of John Henry.
Henry is a hero because he worked himself to death. If we see him as a good example, what does this say about the effects that capitalism has had on American attitudes? About the internalized belief that our worth as humans only comes from what we can contribute to the economy? Why do we see death from exhaustion as a fitting end for a former slave?
Then again, maybe we’re not supposed to.
Tumblr media
A lithograph of John Henry, from the series American Folk Heroes, by William Gropper.
Remember how I noted earlier that many of the laborers who first sang Henry’s ballad would themselves have been former slaves? It’s important because there’s a long history of American slaves using work songs as a tool of resistance against their oppressors, and these Black laborers—these “freed” slaves—would have carried that tradition with them into the Second Industrial Revolution.
The ballad of John Henry, then, might have been sung with the intent of helping other workers survive the brutal conditions on the railroads. Here, Henry becomes an Icarus—a warning of what happens if you push yourself too hard. One version of the ballad recorded by Edward Douglas of the Ohio State Penitentiary contains lyrics which suggest that not every Henry was meant to be emulated.
“John Henry started on the right-hand side,  And the steam drill started on the left.  He said, ‘Before I’d let that steam drill beat me down,  I’d hammer my fool self to death,  Oh, I’d hammer my fool self to death.’”
Don’t do what John Henry did, this version warns the audience. Be wiser than he was. Don’t push yourself quite so hard. Think of the people you’d be leaving behind if you’re not careful.
Perhaps even the creation of this mythos was an act of defiance in and of itself. At this point, I think it bears mentioning that I myself am not Black and can only hypothesize based on what I’ve heard from people who are, but I see something radical in the act of raising up one of your own as your hero rather than venerating the people you’ve been told are superior to you.
Remember, John Henry’s contest was versus a white man’s machine. It costs him everything, but he triumphs over the expectations of that steam drill salesman and proves his worth as a laborer and a person. John Cephas, a blues musician from Virginia who was interviewed by NPR for a report on John Henry back in 2002, had this to say of the myth:
“It was a story that was close to being true. It’s like the underdog overcoming this powerful force. I mean even into today when you hear it (it) makes you take pride. I know especially for black people, and for people from other ethnic groups, that a lot of people are for the underdog.”
Americans love underdog stories. Our own national origin myth is one! John Henry’s assertation of power and skill, the ballad’s declaration that Black people have the right to be proud of themselves too. . . no wonder this myth has resonated with so many people. No wonder it’s survived for a century and a half.
In this light, then, John Henry once again becomes a hero for us, the audience, to emulate. In the fight against oppression, endurance like Henry’s becomes key. Justice is almost never won quickly. The odds stacked against us may seem impossible, but it’s worth trying anyways, even if we have to fight to our dying breaths.
Tumblr media
Artwork of John Henry as a defense worker by James Daugherty.
John Henry has meant and been many things to a lot of people in the past two centuries. A representative of capitalist exploitation, a cautionary tale for workers, an inspiration to oppressed people in America, even a communist icon—but I’d like to take a moment to talk about what his story means to me. It’s not something I’ve seen discussed in my research, and I think it’s worth exploring.
John Henry reflects fears of workers during the Second Industrial Revolution who saw how technology was evolving—how machines were being created that could do their jobs not just faster, but cheaper, because you don’t have to pay a machine like you would a person. They feared that they would be replaced, and that they would be left destitute while their former bosses grew richer and richer. And despite the centuries between us, this is a fear that I can understand.
Often, I feel it myself.
As an artist existing in online spaces during this new influx of AI-generated “art” and writing, I have witnessed many fears that we will be replaced by AI. Yes, there is a certain human quality to art that a generative learning model cannot replicate, but who’s to say that the much-vaunted free market will care? We can hope that art as a profession will survive, but we just don’t know.
In John Henry’s struggle, I see my own. In the steam drill salesman, I see tech bros on the platform formerly known as Twitter showing off their latest batch of beautiful, hollow, AI-generated “art.” I see John Henry’s passion, his pride, his triumph.
And I see hope.
By his life and death, the mythic John Henry reassures me that human beings aren’t so easy to replace after all. He tells me that machines can be defeated. That one day, my vindication as an artist and writer will come, and the world will see our worth.
The ballad of John Henry has endured like a mountain for a hundred and fifty years, and I hope it will survive for hundreds more—that John Henry’s hammer will continue to ring true throughout the ages. But in the midst of American mythos, it’s important not to lose sight of the historical facts behind it. Legends are interesting and inspirational and wonderful, but the real stories have something to tell us, too.
Don’t forget to listen.

Chenford Week 2023 - Day 2: TV Tropes Day (Future Tropes)
This Is It
Tim can't hold it in anymore and asks Lucy to marry him
AO3
1.6k words
AN:  I didn't do it on purpose at all, but this fic fits the song This Is It by Scotty McCreary literally perfectly. I genuinely don't know how I did it. I was trying to think of a title, and thought about the phrase "this is it" which reminded me of the song, and then I was like, "holy shit, how did I do that?" 😅😂 Adding the lyrics in was a total afterthought
Way up in the mountains, four thousand feet high There's a trail through the trees to a cliff where Carolina meets the sky Oh, and there's a view I just can't describe
...
Well, I've been waitin' too, holdin' onto this ring And for the right words to say, for the right time and place, for me To get on one knee
This is it, this is now This is what I've been talkin' 'bout Lookin' out, can't you see forever? Take my hand, just take it in This is a moment we won't forget On top of the world here together If there ever was a time for a perfect kiss Well, this is it This is it
“Marry me,” Tim gripped Kojo’s leash just a little tighter as the words fell from his lips.
Lucy stood overlooking her favorite vista point at Runyon Canyon. Tim was behind her, gazing at her silhouette illuminated by the early morning sun, hair glittering and flowing in the breeze.
Tim knew he wanted everything with her when he asked her out for the very first time in front of the station. The thought was only further cemented in his mind when she told them that their make-up first date would be a better story for their grandkids. And the idea made something warm settle inside him. So, the next day, he bought a ring.
He knew it was irrational, illogical, simply ridiculous; buying a ring after only two dates, but he didn’t care. He’d known Lucy for years. He knew how good they were together, and he wasn’t going to waste another second. She was it for him.
“What?” Lucy squeaked as she turned around to face him.
“Marry me,” he said again as he stepped toward her, Kojo panting at his side.
He took her hands in his, the golden sky creating a halo around her head, “I love you. So much. You brought the light back into my life. You pulled me out of the worst part of my life and a spiral I didn’t even know I was in. You make me better; you make me want to be better. You love with your whole heart and give everything to the people you love. And I’ve had the privilege of experiencing that all-encompassing love first hand. You’re an amazing cop. You’re everything that’s good in the world.”
“Tim-“ she choked out, a watery smile spreading across her features.
He took a breath before continuing, emotion settling in his voice, “I knew I wanted forever with you when I asked you out the first time. Then you mentioned grandkids on our second date, and I knew you wanted the same thing. I don’t have your ring with me because this wasn’t planned, but I don’t want to wait to start the rest of our lives. I know we’re headed in that direction, so let’s just do it. Let’s get married and start forever now.”
He took a step back and planted one knee in the dirt, “Lucy Margaret Chen, will you marry me?”
“You have a ring?” she asked, eyes wide with tears falling down her cheek. It wasn’t what she wanted to come out of her mouth, but her curiosity and surprise got the best of her.
“Yes,” he said, chuckling.
“When did you get a ring?”
“Luce, the question-“
She took a steading breath, a warm and tranquil smile challenging the brightness of the sun in the distance.
“Yes, Tim, I will marry you.”
“Yeah?” he asked, smiling a smile he saved for her.
“Hell yes.”
He stood up at a dizzying speed, disturbing the dog that had, unbeknownst to them, laid down at their feet.
Tim’s hand found the sides of her face, pulling her in, as his lips met hers in a kiss Lucy felt in her bones. He poured all the love he had for her into that kiss. She ran her fingers through the short strands of hair at the back of his head, taking his bottom lip between her teeth before she pulled back to look at the most gorgeous shade of blue she had ever seen. His thumbs brushed her tears away, his lips following their path, his own tears threatening to spill over.
Lucy balled her fists in his shirt, pressing her forehead to his, “I love you so much. You make me so happy, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together.”
“That’s all I want.”
“Good.”
“Good.”
__
They made their way down the mountain pressed as close together, their hands only separating when absolutely necessary, despite the 90 degree heat and Kojo occasionally weaving between them. They all piled into the truck, Kojo flopping on the backseat, slobber dripping from his tongue and onto the carpet. Tim felt Lucy’s eyes on him. He turned the key in the ignition, but before he could put the gear shift into ‘drive’ Lucy was in his lap.
His hands found her hips as he looked into her deep, soulful brown eyes, “Hi.”
“Hi. You have a ring?”
“I do.”
“What does it look like?”
He chuckled at her childlike questioning, “I’m not going to tell you. I might show you when we get home, though.”
“You might?” she raised an eyebrow at him.
“Yeah, might,” he paused, “Maybe I want to wine and dine you first. You know, make it special,” he shrugged.
Her hands sought purchase on his shoulders, “Timothy Alexander Bradford, this was absolutely special. It was perfect and so us. I loved everything about it. You caught me off guard and that just made it even more special. It’s perfect.
Give me the ring now or don’t. I won’t say no to a candlelit dinner with you,” she smirked, “but it’s not some kind of vital thing I need.”
“I love you,” he said, wrapping his arms around her waist and pressing his lips to her neck, tasting the salt on her skin.
“I love you, too. Now, take me home. We have celebrating to do.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
She curled herself against him even further, making a happy little noise and no effort at all to move off his lap.
“Luce, I can’t drive with you on my lap,” he chuckled, tapping her hip.
She gave him a pout, but eventually moved back into her own seat.
__
After an enthusiastic celebratory joint shower, Lucy was tasked with making breakfast. It was 11 AM and they hadn’t eaten more than the smoothies Lucy insisted they stop for before their hike.
The sound of Taylor Swift echoed through the house as Tim rounded the corner from the living room hallway to the kitchen. Clad in his favorite black t-shirt and Lucy’s favorite gray sweatpants, he leaned against the doorframe fiddling with the velvet box in his pocket. He watched Lucy sing and dance along to a song he didn’t know, his breath catching in his throat when he saw what she was wearing.
It wasn’t uncommon, by any means, for her to steal his clothes, but it was her choice in his clothes that had him stuttering. She was wearing one of his old LAPD tees, but it was one of the few with his name scrawled across the back. He couldn’t help but think she chose that one on purpose.
“I know you’re there,” Lucy said from where she stood at the counter, not needing to turn around.
He padded toward her and wrapped his arms around her, his front pressed against her back, his chin tucked into her shoulder.
“Hi,” she said, tossing her whisk into the bowl of pancake batter as she squirmed to turn around now that she was in his arms.
“Hi.”
Tim pressed his lips to her tattoo and pushed the bowl and dry mix off to the side before he bent at the knee, placing his arms under ass. She understood what he wanted. She jumped and wrapped her legs around his waist. He placed her on the counter, but her legs remained wound around him.
He threaded his fingers through her hair in an effort to pull her closer. She leaned in, her bottom lip fitting between his.
Before he got too lost in her, Tim pulled back, “I have something for you.”
He saw the sparkle in her eyes, even as she desperately tried not to show too much excitement, not wanting to get her hopes up on the off chance he wasn’t about to give her what she thought he was.
He knew Lucy was right. Everything about his proposal had been so unplanned and in the moment, so unlike him. But so like them. She brought the unpredictability - and somehow stability too - into his life and showed him that a little spontaneity wasn’t always bad thing.
Attempting to continue embracing what Lucy taught him, Tim had pulled the ring out of the confines of the shoes we wore with his dress blues, shoes he kept in a box on the very top shelf of the guest closet.
He pulled the small velvet box from his pocket and held it between them for a moment, his eyes flickering between her and the object in his hands, before he opened it.
Lucy gasped, her hand instantly covering her mouth, “Tim…” she choked, “It’s beautiful.”
“You like it?”
“I love it,” she said as her eyes filled with tears.
Tim pulled the ring from the cushion and set the box somewhere on the counter. She held her hand out for him and he slid the ring onto her finger, eliciting a smile he wasn’t sure he’d seen before. She reached for him and he came willingly, tucking himself into her body.
“I still plan on taking you out to celebrate,” he mumbled into her skin.
“I’ll never say no to a date night.”
They stayed wrapped up in each other until Lucy squealed, “We’re getting married!” in his ear as if it was brand new information.
“That’s the idea,” he said as he squeezed her even tighter, the realization sort of really hitting him for the first time all morning.
This was it. She was it. This was his forever. Forever was right now. And he couldn’t wait to see what the rest of forever looked like.

double dare plz..
ask and you shall receive
hawaii (stay awake) - really sets the scene for the album. an upbeat pop punk song that shows off what parx does best; electronic infused pop punk that stays fresh with the equally interesting lyrics that compliment it. the song lyrically follows awsten dealing with his daily troubles but having someone to look forward to being with despite it all. really establishes the major themes of the album right from the get go in one catchy package. 7/10
gloom boys - probably the leader of the recurring theme in parx songs of "this song sounds happy but it's actually really fucked and sad ooOOOoooOOo i am the joker but an emoscene lead singer". even if that is the song's legacy for the rest of their discography, it's still a very fun song regardless. lyrically, it uses a lot of ironic imagery in its verses about how he only writes when he's sad like every other artist before going into the chorus, asking (maybe to himself, maybe to someone else) why they're so "cold" and "scared to be alone" in contrast to the more darkly playful nature of the verses. that bridge will forever be iconiccccc. 7/10
stupid for you - she is That song... probably the most well known parx song of all time what else is there to say. it's fun, it's catchy, it's smartly written both instrumentally and lyrically like c'mon it's a good ass song. to be fair there's some mild foreshadowing to the reason for the downfall of their relationship in this song already but "you're playing ring around my head / i wear you like a halo"????? c'mon this is some good shit. i love it. 7/10
royal - FUCK YEAH ROYAL. another song about feeling like he's failing to live up to expectations, both in his work and his personal relationships and wishing how those problems would just Go Away. like fuckkkkkkkkk this song hits hard. like the way it just builds up to these really cathartic big choruses really does it for me along with the subject matter. "you won't like what you see, so keep your eyes off of me / i fall in love with everything that wants nothing to do with me" you could shoot me in the face and it'd hurt less than this 8/10
take her to the moon - ok i'll admit i wasn't really a fan of this until i did a dance warmup to it and now i do LOL. the song instrumentally is the most pop sounding they've been up to this point with clear influences from owl city and early breathe carolina and hellogoodbye. lyrically, it's another well written love song using the space and beyond theming of the title specifically in the bridge's imagery with "yeah, you cloud my head, but can you really get lost in heaven?" showing the rose colored view of awsten for this person. again, foreshadowing, but it's a good ass song i can see why awsten loves it so much. 7/10
made in america - i don't get why people don't like this song it's a perfectly fine song both instrumentally and lyrically lol. from how i interpret it, it's a critique on the hypocrisy of american consumerism specifically in the ~pop punk scene~ for context during awsten's time growing up there was the rise of that sort of "this band saved my life" sentiment and non profits that would fundraise for charity (to write love on her arms specifically for their shirts and the keep a breast foundation with the infamous i heart boobies rubber wristbands). most people in the scene would wear these as trends without really caring about the causes they were for (hence "we're justice warriors when we're bored, you see? / buying bracelets and then channeling"). not to mention the glamorization of band guys' lifestyles they sell to kids who wish to be just like them without realizing they're phonies ("it's basically tradition / to lust for what you're missing / they're selling you a touched up name"). awsten points out the hypocrisy of both the bands and fans who buy into the romanticized band guy image or the causes they "support" that just end up being a fashion statement at the end of the day. honestly this commentary still holds up pretty well especially today when the prioritization of aesthetics over understanding subcultures seems to be fairly prevalent. 7/10
dizzy - a song about growing up into early adulthood, growing distant from the people you once knew, and dealing with depression all through it. pretty self explanatory, the song itself slows down much like the lyrical themes of this song. what else can i say man, it kinda hits for me stop being relatable to me pre los angeles awsten goddamn. final thoughts on this? i like the hidden vocals in the second pre chorus where awsten sings that he does wanna talk and think about all of this, though he sounds quiet and morose saying it out loud. you can hear that better in this post if you want. 8/10
powerless - again i think shooting me in the face would hurt less than this song. a head over heels love song with some subtle foreshadowing again about trying to keep a long distance relationship alive. this song is so devastatingly earnest and hopeful that i need to be stabbed. is that the best way to explain this bc this is me saying the song is really good and makes me emotional and incredibly sad from knowing how this ended up. 9/10
little violence - a song critiquing the rock music scene, specifically his band guy peers that only want to be friends now that parx is signed and making it and the music critics specifically on rock sites like absolutepunk that won't like them for heading in the more pop direction they've been shooting for. it's essentially just "fuck you: the song" and awsten being tired of all of it. the bridge itself takes a break from these shots fired though, since when he's with the person he loves, he seems to calm down about all this at least for a second. the instrumental itself carries the themes of these lyrics, with more punky riffs that still has the classic parx electronics complimenting their sound. 7/10
21 questions - another devastating foreshadowing relationship song has hit the towers. a song that starts as acoustic but builds into a full band song about awsten starting a relationship with a girl who cheats on her prior relationship to be with him and his fears of the same thing happening to him. oh god. yeah this hurts. hindsight is 20/20 and all that. the outro especially kills me "i'll forget you if you need me to, like nothing ever happened / my sun still sets without you, like nothing ever happened" please shoot me in the face it will hurt less 8/10
it follows - a song about awsten's emotions about this relationship, how he knows that he's not thinking straight with this person and how he can't think of anything else without them. if we're to believe the title refers to the horror movie of the same name, awsten feels cursed in relationships, making him nervous for this one despite how head over heels he is. i like how the guitars sort of tremble and stutter like a nervous thought before kicking into these large choruses in tandem with the lyrics. 9/10
plum island - a sort of stream of consciousness from awsten going from topics such as critiques of parx's new direction soundwise to his breakup and feeling shitty all throughout it, the chorus seeming to talk to the listener and playing into the "brooding band guy" thing and the last choruses taking solace in someone despite it all. god it's just an interesting song in general, the sort of lack of an actual chorus until the end and the sort of edm like drop that's used for most of the song with the chopped and mixed vocals of "lose your mind". not to mention those iconic drums at the beginning especially when you consider *waves hand* uh. the subjects of this song. 9/10
i'll always be around - lemme reiterate that when i react to a parx song and i say "i need to be shot" that means the song is good. this is one of the songs making me react like that. sonically, it has all the hallmarks of your regular, heartbreaking parx song with its electronics and devastating lyrics, and hopeful nature despite knowing something bad will happen. a song of awsten promising to be faithful to someone that in later performances got turned into a song about always being around for geoff and otto T___T i am going to put a gun in my mouth and blow my brains up /pos i love friendship i love love i'm dying to be your everything 9/10
candy - y'all know i gotta do the bonus tracks c'mon. this song is the most pop punk they've been while still have those parx certified electronic bits. this literally sounds like it could've been in a 2000s teen movie. hell, this sounds like if an old all time low song was good let's just admit that. lyrically, the song is about lessening your problems by sugarcoating them, which is what the song does by contrasting awsten's daily worries with the upbeat guitars. it's fun idgaf. 8/10
what we do for fun - Literally The Parx Song Of All Time. what the fuck. jaw dropped on the floor at some of this oh my god. less of a love song, more of an obsession song, mostly about sex. why did awsten bother writing about sex after this; it's articulate, mostly subtle, sexy yet playful like hello, "worshipping you from the darkest of corners like i'm practicing my own private religion" IF YOU WROTE THIS KINDA SHIT ABOUT ME I WOULD MARRY YOU ON THE SPOT. AWSTEN YOU DID NOT HAVE TO WRITE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY WHEN YOU WROTE THIS. instrumentally, it's a drum heavy song much like plum island and yeah i can't say anything more what the fuck this song is so good i need to blow something up. 10/10
all in all, double dare is such a classic. from the instrumentals to the lyrics, it's all so emotionally earnest it makes you want to pick up the nearest sharp object and sink it into your chest when you realize what happened like immediately after this album. it's such a good album and establishes a lot about parx.

A fun Headcanon of Erehisu and Rivamika:
"Hadestown" Rehearsal:
Levi: Damn it!
Mikasa: What's wrong?
Levi: The lyrics for one of the songs says that I'm playing a mean old boss!
Historia: With a silver whistle and a golden scale.
Eren and everyone else, including Mikasa: An eye for an eye!
Levi: Yeah, yeah, I get it!
Hanji: Cheer up, Levi! At least you're playing one of the main characters!
Mikasa: Yeah, honey. Plus, you won't be kissing anyone. In fact, you won't be kissing anyone at all, really.
Pieck: Well, that sucks
Historia: Yeah! They're so cute together!
Levi and Mikasa both blush.
Me: Alright, everyone! Listen up!
Everyone gathers around me for instructions
Me: Okay, so I got the cast list for your understudies posted, everyone go check them out!
Everyone looks at the bulletin board to see who their understudy is
The Fates: Mina Carolina, Ino Yamanka, and Temari
Persephone: Frieda Reiss and Nanao
Hades: Madara Uchiha and Erwin Smith
Hermes: Deidara
Orpheus: Ichigo Kurosaki and Ulquiorra Cifer
Eurydice: Rukia Kuchiki and Orihime Inoue
The band: Naruto Uzumaki, Kiba, Shikamaru and others
Passengers and shades: Kenpachi, Yachiru, and others
Eren: Ha! As if this Kurosaki guy can do better than me!
Ichigo: The fuck did you say!?
Rukia: (sighing) Ichigo calm down.
Historia: You too, Eren! Plus, you have a second understudy, just like how Mikasa, Levi, and I each have two as well.
Frieda: That's right dear sister!
Orihime: I can't believe I get to be a part of one of Broadway's biggest hits!
Historia: Hello Ichigo, Rukia, and Orihime! I'm so glad you get to be in the show!
Eren: Where's Ulquiorra?
Ulquiorra comes in walking with baby Nel Tu
Ulquiorra: Sorry I'm late. I had to pick up Nel from preschool.
Byakuya Kuchiki: Same here.
Me: Hi honey!
Byakuya Kuchiki: Hello there my love!
Everyone is chatting with each other
Byakuya and I kiss
Frieda: (whispering) Hey Mikasa and Nanao! I hear that Byakuya might propose later to the director.
Nanao: Actually, it already happened
Mikasa: She said yes to him!
Frieda: When did this happen?
Yachiru: This is gonna fun, Ymir Fritz! But I'm kinda bummed that Kenny didn't get the part of Hades.
Levi: Hey kid, did you just say Kenny?
Kenpachi: Sure, she did why?
Levi: Oh, nothing! I thought that she was talking about my uncle
I hand out the scripts to each understudy
Historia glances at Eren several times
Rukia: Hey, Historia. You keep at that Eren guy
Orihime: Yeah! Do you like him or something?
Historia: What me? Him?
Historia is trying not to admit her feelings for Eren
Ichigo: That Historia girl keeps looking at you
Eren: Really? Her?
Eren is flustered as well
Ulquiorra: Just admit that you have feelings for her
Eren: What should I say to her?
Deidara: Tell her that your love for her is like a truck. Berserker!
Levi shakes his head
Levi: Don't say that, Eren
Ulquiorra: Just be yourself
Eren starts walking towards Historia
Historia: What should I say to him?!
Rukia: Just take a deep breath and relax
Orihime: Tell him you dream of him every night!
Rukia and Mikasa shake their heads
Frieda: No! That sounds creepy!
Mikasa: Just be yourself. I did that with Levi
Historia nods
Eren and Historia both bump into each other
Eren: Hey, Historia
Historia: Hey Eren
Eren and Historia: I've liked you for a really long time and I was
Historia: You have?
Eren: Yeah! Since senior year of high school
Historia: How come I never noticed you before?
Eren: Because you were dating Reiner
Historia: Oh, that's right! To be honest, I never felt anything for him. Everyone kept saying that we were high school sweethearts and that we would get married, but I didn't feel that at all
Eren: I could tell that you were faking it the whole time. Hell, you even went by a different name! It was Krista
Historia: Guilty as charged! Being Krista was exhausting.
Eren: I was so glad when you dropped that persona.
Historia: When I met you in college, I knew that you were a guy that I could trust. I remember when I first told you my real name and a massive weight was lifted off my shoulders.
Eren: I remember that, too.
Orihime: (whispering) This is so cute!
Me: I know, right? This reminds me of how Ichigo and Rukia got together!
Rukia and Mikasa: Ah shit!
Orihime: Where did you come from?!
Me: I've been here the whole damn time!
Eren: So do you...
Historia: Yes!
Eren: Really? That's great! I'll meet you after rehearsals
Historia gives Eren a kiss on the cheek, and he stands there blushing
Nel Tu: Papa. I'm sleepy.
Ulquiorra: I know, sweetie, but there's nowhere for you to rest
Orihime: He's such a wonderful father.
Historia: I saw you looking at him a few times yourself
Orihime: No I wasn't!
Me: Alright, everyone tomorrow, everyone needs to be at the top of their games!
Everyone responded to me, and they all begin to leave
Orihime looks at Levi and Mikasa, Ichigo and Rukia, and now Eren and Historia holding hands looking at each other with love
Orihime doesn't want to admit it, but she does have feelings for Ulquiorra. She loves seeing him being gentle with his daughter Nel
Orihime: Maybe I should tell him how I feel about him!
I added some Ichiruki and Ulquihime in there as well! I hope you enjoyed it, and I might have a continuation of this Headcanon. I might actually have Kenpachi as Hades if I continue this Headcanon!
