Yesterday's poll decided that The Adventurer should purchase some new shoes for himself while he's in the city...

It costs quite a bit of coin, but in the end he decides that having a new sturdy pair of boots will serve him well on his travels. After he's done in the shop, he rushes back to the local inn before nightfall, eventually settling into a somewhat restless sleep..

The next morning, he orders some cheap vegetable stew from a food stall, then lounges in a park as he has his breakfast, watching the squirrels weave through flowering trees and birds pecking about in the dewy grass.. When finished with his meal (and sufficiently recovered from the emotional turmoil of burning his tongue on the soup), he quickly sells his old pair of shoes to a sketchy pawn shop before finally getting back to his journey...

By his calculations, if he he walks all day, it should only be two more sleeps before he gets to his destination, so he sets out to travel as efficiently as possible. He doesn't have the money to rent a cart, or the skill to ride a borrowed horse, but, he does have some fancy new walking shoes and a renewed sense of purpose. No more meandering through fields looking for flowers, napping in the shade, or scanning the ground for cool rocks.. He's going to focus this time!

......After a few hours, he comes across a broken down carriage in the middle of the road, with few people surrounding it, seemingly stuck trying to repair a wheel or something. It's hard to discern from afar..

Maybe if he helps them, he could get a free ride.. or some coins.. or make a new lifelong friend! Who knows? Possibilities flood his mind, this is what adventuring is all about! Wandering into interesting situations and making the most out of them!! .. But, then he recalls his previous oath.. he's supposed to focus today and not allow himself to sidetracked.. And who says he has the skills to help anyway? It could always just be a waste of time... Hmm...

I think like. the first poll a lot of people seemed to like and care about and participate in so it was kind of like 'oh! cool! #it can be a fun collaborative story with a lot of people!' but then gradually less people participate or care so then I kind of allow mysel #to slack with it as well liike 'oh its fine if I miss a day or two here and there' which then turns into a month when I have other stuff #to do lol. Because it does still take time. like maybe 2 hours to put a post together. even if the art and writing is relatively rushed and #quick. Especially since polls are not editable once posted so half the time is just proofreading the post and tags 15 times #just to make super sure there's no errors or etc. lol.. But trying to clear two hours of time during an already hectic day for something #that generally speaking very few people are engaged with or care about at all when it's meant to be interactive (like with normal art #or costumes or other stuff I do - low interaction doesnt bother me since that's not the point/it's not as relevant. but with an actual poll #you do want like.. the most poeple possible to vote on it etc. lol) so it's like.. ehhh #I was originally thinking like 'oh i could do this for an entire year and tell like a whole story and it'd be cool to see where it ends #up eventually after so long and the community kind of choosing the direction of everything!' but now its like 'well people care significant #ly less about the following polls than they did the first one so maybe not As Big Of A Thing but I do at least want to finish the current #thing going on' etc. I mean if in the next few posts it becomes More Of A Thing then it's very fluid. where would I start watching joe hills stuff? seeing your posts makes me kind of want to get into his videos

I recommend watching his Hermitcraft season 9 videos since they're the most recent (and I'm watching them at the moment and they're a lot of fun!!). You don't really need to know any of the other folks on the server to enjoy them and you'll just kind of pick up the broader context through episodes. Unlike a lot of other smps theres not a huge amount of roleplaying or ~deep lore~ so it's easier to get into imo (though I'd advice watching the episodes chronologically anyway).

Joe is easily one of the funniest people I've ever seen anywhere in my life, a kind and thoughtful member of the community AND a talented and brilliant builder (they're building a massive scale model of a working pinball machine in survival minecraft based on the James Webb telescope images and it's insanely cool). They write haikus and share them at the end of their Hermitcraft episodes as patreon rewards. They dress as Beetlejuice on stream (the Beetlejhost) and every time they hit a tip milestone they make their facecam bigger. They pay their discord mods a living wage. They make puns and portmanteaus all the damn time and they're usually good. They're from Nashville, Tennessee. They're willing to kill for the LGBT+ community. They wear lime green cat eye prescription glasses and lime green fishnet fingerless gloves. They don't believe in monarchies. They do typography irl and also in Minecraft, and they're REALLY GOOD AT IT, which is impressive because typography in Minecraft is HARD. One time they spent many hours transporting four TMNT-themed frogs through all three Minecraft dimensions and it was the scariest most stressful thing I've watched in years.

They also stream twice(?) a week on youtube and twitch, one Minecraft stream where they make things on the Hermitcraft server and one arts n crafts stream where they make things in the irl fleshrealm real world, both with ZombieCleo (another minecraft youtuber I also love and highly recommend <3).

They also have a tumblr and a twitter where they are hilarious and brilliant in text form and reblog lots of neat fanart and such.

I also really like the unaffiliated tumblr account @joe-hills-said, which collects his many many many wonderful things he has said in videos and streams.

There's also this decade-old video of them doing minecraft 'cooking' based on the My Drunk Kitchen youtube series and it brings me much joy.

I don't think Mojang deserves all the hate they're getting rn, but I also think the mob vote should stop, or at the very least change.

Cause as it is now, the fans are given three, fleshed-out ideas, and then told to pick one. Cool idea on paper, but in practice it comes with a pretty severe "what could have been" feeling. Even though we still are gaining a feature here, it feels like we're losing two instead.

I think a better option would be to vote on concepts rather than set-in ideas. A thought I've had would be to split the vote into two pieces. First would be a list of multiple biomes that lack original mobs, and you'd vote for one. Then, there'd be a second list of categories of animals like mammals, amphibians, birds, fantasy creatures, etc. When the votes are done, Mojang takes the two concepts, and then a month or two later does a big reveal of a mob that fits both categories. For example, if an Arctic biome and Bird were picked, we'd get the penguin.

Here, the starting concepts are vague enough that there's no longer this nasty sense of competition. The only risk is if Mojang will make a cool mob from what they're given. I think it'd reduce a lot of toxicity, cause no ideas are fully lost here. The categories would remain similar year to year, so you could always just vote again.

well, i said that i'd make a post breaking down stings design if he made it to round 2 and so! this is it! this is that post

without further ado, let's talk about how i designed my boy!

warnings for (drawn) close-up images of scorpions:

let's start off with his head!

the vast majority of sting's head comes from scorpion anatomy! his eyebrows are based off of a pair of a scorpion's walking legs. scorpions have 4 pairs of walking legs which are attached to the head/thorax. i can't represent all 4 pairs but i could at least represent 1, hence why his eyebrows are Huge and stick off of his head

the pair of darker red tubes that go from behind his eyebrows to the back of his head, those are meant to be pedipalps! pedipalps are actually part of a scorpion's mouth, but for sonic character design purposes i used it to resemble hair. as for the actual pincers, thats what the two things on the back of his head are. if you were to translate it to hair, it'd be like a tight, messy bun

the other part of a scorpion's mouth are the chelicerae! his mouth originally took more inspiration from how a scorpion's mouth is supposed to look, but due to how difficult it was to consistently draw + emote in general, this was changed to be more beak-like (using mimic for reference). his "tusks" are still reminiscent of the tip of the chelicerae, only they turn up to help his mouth look more distinct!

as for the 2 pairs of dot markings on his head, those are meant to represent eyes! scorpions have at least 6 eyes, 12 at most. the 2 pairs of markings are meant to give the impression that sting has 6 eyes!

next up is his clothes! since sting specializes in close-combat fighting, he doesn't really wear loose clothes as he doesn't want to risk tripping over himself or getting caught on anything. that's why he wears a simple torn tank top and some pants

his belt is fashioned after the segments on a scorpion's abdomen! thats why there's all those lines on it

his shoes, the golden edge of his shoes with the two little protrusions, those are meant to resemble a scorpion's paws!

as for sting's tail, the reason why it's so thick is because he is a highly venomous scorpion! it's also why the pincers on his head are so small: scorpions with thick tails and small pincers are Very Venomous while scorpions with thin tails and big pincers are mostly harmless! i went for a more spherical shape with his tail because i thought it looked cool. he originally didn't have a set number of segments but ultimately i landed on 6, which is the same amount of an actual scorpion (5 metasomal segments + the 1 pincer)

lastly, his palette! sting's palette is actually inspired by the deathstalker scorpions from kipo and the age of wonderbeasts! actual deathstalkers are more orange/brown, but the mutated ones in kipo are various shades of red. you can really see the inspiration in this image here

his tail has an alternating color palette for readability! it'd be harder to make out more action-y poses if it was all the same color, or if it was half lighter half darker, so the alternating colors help make it more distinct

Personally, I flat refuse to vote for anything non-English unless it's against something else non-English, even if it's something I recognize, like, and use, e.g. fremdschaemen. Comparing across languages just isn't interesting, and the faster it gets down to all English words, the more interesting the votes will be.

Huh, i find it the opposite! There's so many pretty and interesting words from other languages, and some of them use cool sounds English doesnt even have! I've learned about a lot of cool things from the other languages in this tournament, and I think it'd be a bit boring to just have English words. If you wanted only English words, you could make a different tournament for the best English word, but I'm accepting all languages, cause its interesting and fun for me! (and hopefully for a lot of you, too)

Oh absolutely! There are so many lovely popular science entomology books. I'll name a few, but there are tons more for specific bugs you might be interested in if you search around! I've got four in mind that I've read that I think provide some nice variety.

Buzz, Sting, Bite by Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson

I so enjoyed this book. It's not about any specific insect, but it's a delightful tour of a bunch of cool adaptations and the like in the arthropod world. I think it'd be a good choice if you're new to the whole thing as it's fun, light, and has lots of different groups represented. I learned about a wild interaction between ground-nesting bees and blister beetles from this one that I ended up making a little video on.

Never Home Alone by Rob Dunn

I love the household ecosystem! This book isn't just arthropods — it also covers bacteria and other organisms you might find in your home. But it's so neat! And tonally it's refreshing because it doesn't attempt to scare you about what's in your house. Rather, it invites you to engage with your fellow home inhabitants.

Honeybee Democracy by Thomas D. Seeley

This is such an interesting deep dive into honey bee behavior. I think a lot of people know bees are smart but don't quite realize how complex their social behavior gets. I also am charmed by any book that includes a chapter on incorporating another animal's behavior as a lesson to our own human society (the last chapter is basically "what can we learn from the voting system of honey bees?", an adorable thought).

The Sting of the Wild by Justin O. Schmidt

The Schmidt pain scale is a bit infamous. Dr. Schmidt made a whole collection of insects sting him, and rated them on a scale based on the pain he felt. With descriptions like "someone has fired a staple into your cheek," it's definitely not the most objective, but it is a good time. And following his journey getting stung by everything (including his grad students that followed in his footsteps in some very funny ways) is entertaining.

Lets talk mob votes

Now, there are a lot of things in minecraft that I hear people complain about, and I think theres some fair critiques of the game to be made! There's even fair critique to be made about the mob votes, too! But... I'm here to give a clearer perspective on what mob votes really are, as most people seem to misunderstand their context and the actual premise of them... which is somewhat mojangs fault, I'll admit. I stand by critique being welcome as long as you are making informed critique. I'd argue being informed is more important than being constructive / offering alternatives! So lets get to the informing. You might be thinking that its obvious what the mob votes are. Mojang takes like, 3 cool mob concepts that they have, and make us pick only one. They make us vote, and only add the winner. That's a surface level understanding. The simplest part to debunk is a notion that I see often: that Mojang has these mobs entirely designed and planned out. I said concepts but most people don't seem to understand that these are just concepts, they aren't fully fleshed out. They want to know which ones the players like, so that they aren't spending time developing a mob that people don't care much for. They prefer to add what will make people happy! But... what about cases like the allay? It was designed far more deeply than the other mobs in the vote, which I will say was quite unfair. Well, okay, lets just... pretend they did a vote between 3 well-designed mobs. "Why not just add all 3?" people might say. They still... I... I don't think people understand that Mojang operates on a schedule, and tries to balance what they work on - minecraft is a game with a lot of different elements, and none should take the center stage above any other one. It isn't just their job to add mobs. If it was their job to add mobs and they only added like, 1 or 2 mobs a year, then yeah, it'd be really stupid. Though, I suppose my real point is that... if a mob works out good enough to be in their plans, it won't be in a vote. They won't just have a vote where they'll add all 3 because all 3 aren't necessary and they aren't reasonable. Lets take 1.20 for example. They spent time adding new mechanics for detecting where you click on a block for chiseled bookshelves, they gave both the camel and the sniffer fancy animations using the new keyframe system, and armor trims have a very fancy customizable system that makes adding more very easy! They changed up some things in the lighting engine, they're always doing under the hood changes. It's never a choice of "do performance fixes" or "add new content" because they... do both all the time! It's just that it usually yields a net zero. But that's a tangent Point is, yes they can indeed add all 3, but that would take away from the time they have to spend on the update. Mojang is a company that generally tries to avoid crunch, and has summer holidays. I am a supporter of healthy development environments, so I don't mind this. It means that things may take longer, but like. Do we really need all the mobs? Again, if they consider the mob important enough, it won't be in a vote. The vote is just like (Well, d'ya ever take time to think about what its like being at mojang? I bet ideas like the glare or copper golem are thrown around all the time, ideas echoing through the hallways... we only get to see just a few of them. So y'know, you can take that logic and say. well. they probably have WAAAY more than just 3 mobs that a few devs want to add, but they can't feasibly add all those mobs. So they of course just pick a few. 3 or 4. They develop those mobs in a basic level beyond initial concepts, and let the players pick between their little fun ideas. I'd bet that their best ideas are probably not put up into votes. They probably keep those ones locked down and prepare them for further design.) I bet they just... well. continue'd in self-reblog. aus understands that he's gonna miss stuff a lot, which is partially the reason he and mama split. he just hates having to miss all these stuff. the fact that mama's brothers get to make certain stuff that he misses just makes him really sad. it's no one's fault at the end of the day, it's just circumstances.

peanut's really proud of her dad, and she's like "hey look that's my dad!" and some kids are like "that's so cool!" while others are like "no he's not!" and the teacher is like "p, that's auston matthews. he's a hockey player." and p's like, "i know that! he's my dad, too. mama said the reason her and daddy don't live together is because daddy has to travel too much and mama can't stay all alone. it's too hard." and the teacher doesn't know what to say to that, so she just continues. like p knows that her dad is famous, and that he doesn't live with her like 'most dad's' do, but she also knows that he loves her and she loves him. whenever someone asks about auston, peanut is giving a very straight-up answer, bcz her parents never lied to her about their relationship. they knew it'd be hard for p, growing up in the spotlight, as a matthews and hughes, so they thought it'd be best if she learns everything from the start.

aus tries to teach peanut spanish, but p's got a bit of an accent. aus makes fun of it sometimes, but he adores it. he calls her cute nicknames in spanish, and p repeats them to mama, who always blushes bcz aus called her some cute things in spanish once upon a time too. she's super proud of her heritage, esp bcz mama matthews is talking in spanish to her a lot, and aus doesn't hide it. he talks about his heritage proudly and it's gotten p to accept it as well.

So this feels like a fun way to announce a little project I'm working on, and that some lovely folks voted to influence the debut of:

I'm working on a zine!

It's going to involve sharing the plant guilds I'm creating, along with the relevant background information on each plant within the guild, instructions on one type of functional use of the plant, knowledge about how and why one plans and executes a plant guild, etc!

Basically, I figured it'd be a fun and helpful way for me to absorb the information I need about my Food Forest, plan and design it, and execute those plans, and also make that knowledge pleasantly available to others. I figure as the Food Forest develops, I can create additional Zines or adapt the existing Zine to continue to document and share the progress with folks who are interested in learning more about how, why, what, where, when, and all the rest.

It should be a really interesting process, because I expect for a lot of the work to be theoretical for a while, then work-away-from-home for another while, and then finally we'll fully integrate human living into the food forest. That ought to bring layers to how we approach it.

Hypothetically, if Harold got to compete in All Stars, what would you have wanted to see with him there?

this is a good question and i honestly haven't considered it much. because as much as harold is an all star in my heart, he's not really on the list of people that shoulda been in all stars but weren't.

i have. no idea what team he'd be on. since he's so morally neutral he just does whatever he wants. i'd like him to be a vulture and he COULD (rigging the votes n all) but i think fresh would make him a hamster

in existing seasons he didn't have much of a character arc but what little he had (conflict w duncan and them growing to reluctantly respect each other) was wrapped up fairly well in action, so he'd have to either have a self contained arc in all stars or build off on that somehow

tbf. i do think it'd be interesting to see him interact w all stars duncan since, imo, duncan bullied him mostly as a way to establish himself as a Bad Boy^tm. it made him feel powerful to pick on an easy target u kno. so i think all stars duncan would, upon realising that people don't take him so seriously anymore, take it out on harold but the pranks and jabs all keep flopping. kinda like gwen trying and failing to make up w courtney. there could be some neat parallels there

and harold would take duncan aside and be like. "listen man. this is so pathetic. you literally don't have to give me swirlies anymore if your heart isn't in it. i'd actually prefer it if you didn't." and duncan's like "WHATEVER DORK" and storms off but he actually listens and like. stops trying so hard

dunhar would be so funny. im sorry it would. they're on equal footing now and gwourtney would be so fucking confused.

aside from that i'd really like to see harold interact with sam (both geeky simps) and cameron (imagine their minds combining) and lightning (he would be obsessed with lightning) and svetlana (he would be obsessed with svetlana)

and maybe some interactions w heather? i like their dynamic a lot and it'd be cool if they FINALLY teamed up and worked together because they could be so powerful. maybe he could tell her that hiding the immunity idol is fucking stupid. maybe he could steal it instead of alejandro (i get the narrative relevance of alejandro taking it but i dont care lol)

i think he'd be like. booted either just before or just after merge.
