Girl's night outs with the other female shinigami wasn't anything spectacular however it was quite rare so there was a feeling of excitement in the air.

You approached the seated lieutenants, but as you sat you could see they were already a bit tipsy what with their flushed cheeks and giggling.

"Come sit!" Rangiku hurriedly said as she called out your name.

"I'm already sat dummy, what's up with you?" You snickered, amused.

"We were just talking about the Eleventh Division. I hear they don't...even shower!" Isane cackled, thumping the bar and causing the cups to shake.

"The smell must be crazy." Rangiku cackled, tears forming.

You snorted.

Well, it wasn't exactly a farfetched theory that the Eleventh Division didn't prioritize cleanliness. However, you knew for a fact, Fifth Seat Ayasegawa of all people didn't fit with that rumor.

Speak of the devil, the familiar orange turtleneck and plush feathers came into your eyesight as he angrily stomped off.

"Yumichika!" Ikakku cried out, following after him.

"We do shower, I'll have you know!" Ikakku barked, jabbing his finger at the three of you.

"...Together?" Rangiku questioned, cocking a brow in an attempt to rile him up even more.

Ikkaku's eyes widened and his cheeks burned scarlet.

"That's none of your business!" He stuttered, then chased after Yumichika.

"Well, it's nice to see some love birds in the Seireitei, huh?" You remarked after he'd left.

"Slim pickings I suppose." Rangiku sighed, as she stretched her arms.

"That is so not true." You responded. "There's so much eye candy here, Rangiku! You don't see it?"

"Yeah, cos you're a newbie. Few decades and you get bored." She said, glancing at the entrance where other shinigami passed by on patrol.

"What about you, Isane? Anybody catch your eye?"

"Not really. People show their true colors when they're admitted to the infirmary. And it is not a pretty sight." She sighed. "What about you, Y/N?"

"Hm...now you put me on the spot I'm not sure."

A memory popped into your head.

"...Abarai." You finally answered, lips curving into a smile.

Your response was met with clamoring and gasps.

"Hey! What's wrong with him?" You questioned, taken aback by their reaction.

"He's so.."

"Well, let's just say you had an unconventional choice." Nanao stated as she pushed the bridge of her glasses up her nose.

"Yeah right. You guys are just so picky. No pleasing you." You folded your arms in defiance, defending your choice. "Those luscious red locks, those eyebrows. One day I passed by the Sixth Division's barracks and he was shirtless...sweat trickling down his abs and those tats..."

"Easy there, Juliet." Rangiku giggled. "Don't leave the chair soaking wet."

"Rangiku!" You hissed at her crudeness.

Soon enough, you and the ladies took your leave. The booth was jam-packed with the male lieutenants who had been keeping as quiet as church mice to eavesdrop.

Shuhei grasping at his roots with his unrequited crush on Rangiku, Renji blushing so hard his cheeks matched his hair at your statement, Tetsuzaemon thumping the table and Izuru side-eyeing them all.

"God damn it!" Tetsuzaemon groaned. "Why do all the ladies think so lowly of us? Hell, I wasn't even an option!"

"You lucky thing, Abarai." Shuhei sniffled. "You better go get the girl."

Renji's face scrunched up in embarrassment.

"I wouldn't even know where to start!" He cried out.

"I'm sure it's less complicated than you're making it out to be." Izuru snarked.

"Yeah! She already thinks you're a stud, just make a move on her. Simple!" Tetsuzaemon cried out.

"Lieutenant Abarai, can I help you?" You asked, a little confused as to why he had been loitering around the entrance of the Third Division barracks for almost ten minutes.

"Yeah! Uh, I wanted to ask you something." He responded, with a nervous chuckle.

"Me?" You questioned, with an incredulous stare.

"Yes, you." He swallowed, thickly. You acting clueless was making his stomach harden. He knew he hadn't misheard you.

He let out an exhale.

"I was at the tea house yesterday, and I overheard you and the other lieutenants." He muttered, cheeks heating up as he struggled to meet your eyes.

You just stared at him and you were sure you could hear glass shattering in your mind.

You wanted the ground to swallow you up, whole.

There was absolutely no way you were thirsting over Renji in public and he had heard every word you said.

This was a nightmare for sure.

Your face was aghast but you know for the preservation of your dignity you had to do something dishonest.

“Really? Maybe that was somebody else.” You said as you shrugged nonchalantly.

“No, no. I’m sure it was you.” He said, with an uneasy laugh.

“Did you see me say that?” You questioned, voice firm as you intently stared into his eyes.

Renji was staring at you as if you lost your mind. Then let out a scoff.

“You’re right. I had to be out of my mind to think a girl like you would be into a guy like me.” He said, a little defeatedly then turned to make his way out.

You felt a pang of guilt strike you. You didn’t mean for that to happen.

“Renji, wait!” You cried out as you clamped a hand around his wrist.

“Hm?” His eyes furrowed together in bewilderment at your reaction.

“I’m sorry I lied…you did hear me at the tea house! I just...I was humiliated..” You trailed off, struggling to make a valid excuse.

His face broke into a smile as he gave out a hearty laugh.

“Caught ya..!”

“Huh?!”

“That feelin’ sorry for myself act got you real good!” He exclaimed, then threw an arm around you pulling you in.

“Ugh, Renji!” You groaned in irritation, swatting him away. “That’s low!”

“Not as low as you trying to convince me I got a screw loose or somethin’!” He shot back, keeping his grip around you. “The look on your face was priceless!”

You rolled your eyes.

“Gloat while you can.” You muttered under your breath.

“Ah, don’t worry. I think you’re pretty easy on the eyes too y’know..” He said, lowly as he tilted your chin upwards. “I’ll let you know the next time I’m working out so you can be front row.”

“Move!”

muscle memory: sam x farmer

had the urge to write smth for my sdv farmer and Sam bc who else is gonna make content for them😭

anyways this is just some self-indulgent fluff and I just. love the idea of the farmer being both soft and gentle while being a huge hunk from carrying the town on their back.

When Sam first met the new farmer, he didn't think there'd be anything spectacular about him. Sure, he seemed chill - there was definitely this softness about him from his pretty face and green fingers, he was clearly nothing more than just a gentle giant with a thing for crops - but that was all there was to him, right?

Boy, was he wrong. Abigail busted into band practice one day swinging a fucking sword, jabbering on about how Hansel the shy-wouldn't-hurt-a-fly farmer taught her a few moves for fighting off the monsters that lurk in the mines nearby. Sam couldn't believe it. This was the same guy that hangs out with him and Vincent sharing a pizza that he picked up from Gus on the way. This was Hansel, who wears the little daisy that he randomly plucked and placed in his hair because the shade reminded him of the grass; and he looked fucking adorable with it, like a gorgeous fairy prince.

It wasn't until Sam watched him from the porch, running around his farm in the scorching heat of summer with nothing but an old pair of jeans and boots, back muscles flexing with each plough of the dry soil that he finally believed it. He definitely wasn't tall and towering for nothing. And not only that, Sam got to feel the brick-like texture of his abs, fingers tracing over fresh scars earned from the mines he had ventured hours before their rendezvous. The warmth of his strong arms around him, as they lay in his bed, whispering sweet nothings in hopes his mother wouldn't hear was a broken record that still played in his mind to this day.

He flushes cranberry red as he lazily plucks his guitar, eyes dazed and glued to the extra sword Hansel had forgot to put away, as he was in a rush to catch a bus to Calico desert. Sam is quickly snapped out of his trance as the door creaks open to reveal his beloved husband with dishelved green locks and dusty clothes. Seems like he's gone deeper than last time.

“Baby! Welcome home.” Sam walks over with his signature lopsided grin and reaches up to sling his arms around Hansel's shoulders.

“Hey, love. Got something for you.” He hums against Sam's lips, trying to pull away so he doesn't get his clothes dirty. Each time Hansel arrives home from the desert, he brings a few cactus fruit for his sweetheart without fail - his favourite. Sam gleams an adoring smile as he pulls Hansel in for another kiss despite his whines; his form of showing affection in response to his thoughtful gifts.

“You look tired. Let me help you relax tonight, okay? Maybe I’ll give a massage later.” Sam murmurs and runs his hands along his tense shoulders and back, earning a content sigh from the farmer. He slides a hand down to lace their fingers together, warm calloused palms swinging gently as Sam guides him to the fresh bath he’s prepared.

Hansel is putty under the blonde’s gentle touch - he’s always been good with his hands. They exchange soft kisses between each tender touch that loosens the tension of the day. Sam’s fingertips brush over each memorised scar like a song he plays by heart, gaze soft and concerned causing Hansel to tug him closer as reassurance. And it’s Sam's turn to melt in his arms as they cuddle in bed afterwards, where he feels the safest and most content.

Today's compilation:

Another Pyrrhic Victory 1989 Grunge / Hard Rock

Here's a neat, little artifact from the Seattle grunge scene that was released just before the genre went nuclear and proceeded to usurp hair metal as the new face of rock music for the early 90s. 1989 was a year that proved to be quite a decisive one for this new and much darker sound that was using elements from both punk and metal. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains had both managed to ink deals with major labels, and Nirvana released their debut album, Bleach, too.

Now, the first label that comes to mind for literally anyone when you mention the word 'grunge' to them is obviously Sub Pop, but Sub Pop was not actually the first label to put out a grunge record. That honor seems to belong to a Long Island sublabel of Dutch East India Trading called Homestead Records, who in 1985, released Seattle band Green River's debut EP, Come On Down.

Arguably, grunge's second record, though, was a various artist compilation that came out in 1986 called Deep Six, which also happened to be the debut release of another Seattle label that would go on to specialize in punk called C/Z Records. And a few years later, after that first ever grunge comp, C/Z then put out their second one, Another Pyrrhic Victory, which in addition to Green River also featured another pioneering grunge band called Malfunkshun, both of whom had also appeared on Deep Six as well. And alongside them on this comp were a few lesser known bands too.

Now, to my own ears, this release isn't really anything all *that* spectacular, but I think it's still pretty cool to get an authentic dose of ephemera from this scene that has been so heavily romanticized, like the 60s have been for a prior generation. And still, I think there are a couple very good tracks on it, both of which were exclusives at the time.

Malfunkshun kick off the album with something terrifically noisy called "My Only Fan," which also has some great groove to it too. These guys originally formed in 1980, but never actually released anything official while they were together, besides some songs for v/a comps. However, "My Only Fan" features the band's original vocalist, Andrew Wood. Sometime after the release of Deep Six, which had a pair of Malfunkshun songs on it, the band went on an extended hiatus and Wood then helped form a much more popular Seattle Grunge group by the name of Mother Love Bone. But after that, Malfunkshun also returned to work, and out of it came "My Only Fan," released the year before Wood would tragically pass from a drug overdose 😔.

And the other highlight on this album comes courtesy of a band named H-Hour, who, just like Malfunkshun, also formed in the early 80s, but barely released anything either. In fact, the only release this band ever made themselves when they were intact is a 1987 cassette simply titled 1987, which no one currently on Discogs claims to own and has also never once been sold on its marketplace either. But on Another Pyrrhic Victory, H-Hour contributed a song called "Medley," which is over ten minutes long, and is basically two songs in one. And while "both songs" are good, the shredding that takes place in the final two minutes of the second one really manages to kick the whole thing up a notch 🤘. Plus, up until just last year, this release was the only place that you could actually find this track.

So there's probably Seattle grunge showcase comps out there that are more consistent than this one, but Another Pyrrhic Victory still has a couple sweet cuts on it from a pair of bands who seem to have been pretty underappreciated nonetheless.

Random footy ask! I only saw bits of the Korea game earlier but would love your takes on what needs to change. Was sonny swapped from the centre to the left in the second half? Did Kangin just get marked into oblivion?

ah, it was a frustrating game. not the end of the world, but a proper wake up call for klinsmann regarding his tactics and starting xi choices. full credit to jordan, they did their homework and played with real fighting spirit! very hard to break down and very physical as well. didn’t play a low block and played their football, it was nice to watch. they had a lot of fans there and that gave them a bit of a home advantage.

first of all, personnel status. kim taehwan needs to start over lee kije. i’m not a fan of lee kije generally but even disregarding that, taehwan is just way more impressive going forward. second half was really bright from him and seol youngwoo - the two fullbacks made a lot of overlapping runs that led to a fair amount of chances. just no final ball today unfortunately. cho guesung was off it - i don’t know if he’s feeling the pressure as being first choice striker or if he’s just off form but i think a stint on the bench would do him good. i’d like to see more of oh hyeongyu up front. he’s very eager to impress and held the ball just a bit too long at times today (which i think frustrated sonny) but there’s a player there.

kangin is great, but he’s a young player. he runs hot/cold right now and that’s probably my biggest point of criticism with him and why i side eye kr bro tacticos that hype him up too much—he’s spectacular but he has to work on consistency within his performances and his game, especially now that he’s coming into his own and opponents know that and try to mark him into oblivion like they do with sonny. haven’t seen the stats but he got dispossessed a lot today and tried some long balls that were a bit over shot from the eye test. it’s a good game for his character, to come down a bit and know that he has to find a way past that and work on his game. he’s young, he will improve and find his consistency.

tactics wise… first half was sloppy apart from the penalty (which was super). it was kind of surprising honestly, team was clicking a lot more in the past few games chemistry wise, but this first half, oof. couldn’t put a pass together if their lives depended on it! second half was much better, more aggressive. lack of finishing was pretty much the curse today. i think klinsmann needs to just go through some attacking patterns with the lads instead of individual brilliance moment from sonny/kangin/inbeom/whoever and inshallah. loved the overlapping runs from the fullbacks today as said, and if he hones those a bit more in training and actually rewards players who play well with starts then things could be looking way better. getting heechan and jinsu back would be a huge boost, especially heechan!!! his physicality and his ability to drive into the box. i’d like to see sonny playing through the middle with heechan on the wing, that linkup is very dangerous.

think today was also in part sort of a underestimation on korea’s part, i don’t think the lads expected jordan to play the way they did which is why the first half looked so rough. the second half was much better in terms of determination and aggression. the conspiracy theorist in me is saying that they did this on purpose so they could see how japan’s group plays out and possibly avoid a clash in ro16 but i don’t think klinsmann is playing 5D chess 😭

Submariner Summer 10

Hello those of Namor Nation on the Tumblrs, time for #SubmarinerSummer part the tenth, Tales to Astonish #79: When Rises The Behemoth!

Hulk cover obvs, but even though this is NOT a Hulk read through, gotta admit its a banger for the 1st meeting of Hulk and Hercules

The Title page puts us right back in the Namor action, though, as soldiers surround Namor and Puppet Master orders him to fight to the death.

IMPORTANT NOTE: there's a new inker in the house, and its none other than Bill Everett himself, the *creator* of Namor! The soldiers underestimate him and get in *too* close, though, and in close with the Submariner is a bad move, as Namor quickly lets them know. They're just no match for him all around, and Namor isn't interested in that

Interesting perspective here: "The guy running away unarmed after sparing our lives is forcing a showdown, we have to shoot him!" I mean in all fairness they don't know a supervillain is mind-controlling him, but still...yikes US is gonna US

Namor can only take so much, and reacts to the constant attack by pushing over the sign, but as soon as it start to lean the soldiers scatter...and AGAIN, that's good enough for Namor and he stops his attack; seems he's resisting the "fight to the death" order. Off to the river!

And to the river he goes to recharge his dwindling energy, taking a swan dive off the George Washington Bridge into "The Mighty Majesty of Nature's Water!!!" You know Stan Lee dialogue means business when it has alliteration AND three exclamation marks

Back in Atlantis, the thing Namor feared comes to pass, as the doomsday weapon in the form of a monster called Behemoth wakes!

Dorma is set the task of bringing Namor back to deal with Behemoth, which she quickly does, finding him at the bottom of the bridge

Dorma is worried at his state, but luckily his dive gave Namor the clarity to finally really fight Puppet Master, a fight which he wins as his puppet shatters! And the last plot thread comes together, as the ever watchful Warlord Krang returns to the narrative, with plans for Puppet Master

And here we arrive at this issue's cliffhanger: Krang has taken control of Behemoth thanks to Puppet Master, as Namor confronts the monster! And the next issue blurb promises a "battle spectacular"! oh-ho, we shall see, won't we Namor Nation?

A pretty fun issue with a Namor mini-rampage in New York and him overcoming the villain through strength of will instead of just strength, before weaving several of the recent plot threads together; gotta love it. Plus Behemoth is classic Marvel Monster design, always a strength of theirs. On top of all that, Bill Everett returns to the character he created, even if its only on inks, so that is something. Let's see how it all plays out! Next--Tales to Astonish #80: To The Death!

so yeah we finally went to see Spider‑Man: Across the Spider-Verse and I would have to say I was surprised by the amount of ppl that were there when the movie started it like like the theater we were in was half full. but also of course there was some collectable goodies for this one also which you can see Here.

As for the movie itself I would have to say it was amazing! truly spectacular! and every other Spider-Man related adjective lol but seriously it was excellent I would have to say I did love it.

I feel that the story this time focus a bit more on Gwen at least I thought it did Miles is still heavily part of the story and does follow him but I do think it does focus more on Gwen to me it was a bit of a 60/40 where it was 60 Gwen and 40 Miles but there is alot going on in this movie you do have to pay attention!

It takes place like a year or so after the first one and Miles is busy doing his best being the Spider-Man of his corner of the Multiverse (Earth-1610) but is struggling with his normal/home life and his duties as Spider-Man. Unknowingly he creates a threat to the entire Multiverse known as the Spot and ends up reuniting with Gwen and his friends from the original movies and goes on a huge spider fueled adventure across the multiverse to stop him while at the same time meeting various Spider-People especially Miguel O'Hara Spider-Man 2099 (Earth 928 a possible Marvel future) who is bring all the Spider-People together to hopefully protect the Multiverse.

Like I said the movie is excellent I loved every minute of it and it quite long as animated movies go being it is like 2 and a half hours but the animation is excellent just like the first one and I feel each Spider-Person is given their own style of animation and there own look which really sets them apart.

The music for this is great as well both the films score and the various songs used through out. the voice acting is I thought was perfectly done, sure alot of it is easy at times when people are wearing masks but when they are not it is quite impressive. They are still very expressive with "mask eye" movements and body gestures which are all very fluid and life like.

One thing this movie has alot of is humor as Peter B. Parker says in the movie "Spider-Man is suppose to be funny" and this is just that the movie does have lots of funny moments to balance out the seriousness and drama. One of the most funny parts of the movie is when the Spot is introduced and his first fight with Miles is hilarious.

The references and cameos are mind blowing!! you'll have to go and see this like 15 times or watch it frame by frame digitally or possibility wear out the pause button when it comes on disk to see and get everything!! its truly amazing how much they put into this.

I have to say I thought the choice of the Spot for the main villain in this was pretty good being his powers are interdimensional and would work good in a movie that deals with the Multiverse and I felt that they did a really good job with the character in general

I how ever was not to sure about making Spider-Man 2099 a some what secondary villain. He wasn't really I think a villain but more of a person with good intentions that might not be the best way about doing things? They did a really good job with the character tho I thought he was handled nicely over all.

but yeah they kinda took everything that made the first one great and did more of that plus a bunch of new and amazing things you can tell that this is a huge leap form the previous movie.

So pretty much if you loved Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse you'll love this one too!

also there isn't any credit scenes so you don't have to sit and wait for that

1) jaskier doesnt realize theyre dating. the clunky scene explanations are there because i never managed to bridge two scenes that kind of, NEEDED to get bridged for the story to make any sense haha

"Ugh," Lambert gripes, nose in his tankard and face screwed up, "pretty boy's been such a drag since the two of you got together."

[geralt is off buying another pitcher for the table, lambert and eskel are bickering while jaskier's world caves in on itself]

[...]

[theyre sitting with geralt's arm around jaskier's shoulders, geralt won a round of three-way gwent against eskel and lambert and has won the first pot of the night. geralt has just glanced over and noticed his blush]

Geralt's brow furrows a bit in concern, and he leans back from the table a bit so he can turn his attention away form the conversation and towards Jaskier. "Are you alright?" He asks, speaking lowly, just to Jaskier. "Your face is red... usually takes you longer than this to get in your cups."

"I'm fine," Jaskier tries, but the little furrow doesn't let up, and Geralt gently presses the back of his hand to Jaskier's forehead to check his temperature. After a moment he turns and flags down a serving girl.

"Some water, some bread, and a bowl of soup, if you would." He says, and drops a few of his recently won coins into her waiting palm.

"Really, I'm fine," Jaskier tries again, feeling rather silly and stone-cold sober.

"Don't worry about it," Geralt says, stroking a hand up and down Jaskier's back in an attempt to comfort. "I know how much food helps you, once you've had a bit too much, and I've more than enough to pay for it."

"Yeah, /my/ money, being used right in front of me for that corny shit." Lambert says, and makes an exaggerated gagging noise.

"You don't like it, why don't you win it back?" Geralt smirks, brow raised in obvious challenge, voice losing some of that gentle sincerity now it's being used to banter with his brother.

2) drunk Belleteyn marriage. oof, this one is rougher than i remembered it being, according to the notes i left for myself i was attempting to get down all the details i could before i forgot them, while suffering through a rather spectacular headache. so it’s littered with typos. i’ll try and bridge the two fic overviews i have written so they’re comprehensible. i am preserving the typos tho so you can get a sense of just how heroically i struggled to get the words out, lmao XD

geralt and jaskier get married on belleteyn in some small rural town. they are both drunk when it happens, theyre both not making the best choices maybe, but geralt is cognizant(if impaired). JASKIER is blackout. geralt ddoes not realize this.

they wake up together in bed. geralt is half on top of jaskier, warm and happy and very much in love. being drunk gave him the courage to act on his feelings, and despite the headache he's very much at peace w/ whats happened. jaskier wakes up under him, does not remember getting married. takes him a little bit to cotton on to that fact. when he does realize, he awkwardly goes "we can annul it", and its like the first thing he says, and hten he awkwardly adds that its not the first time he's had to jump out ofa belleteyn fling.

geralt is really upset but tries to hide it. he thought jaskier was sincere.

jaskier does want him back, but thinks that geralt was just drunk and that his could ruin their friendship.

(i remember imagining a scene of geralt pulling off his ring to examine the inside while jaskier's out of the room. they're posey rings, and htey each picked one out for the other. geralt picked "love above all else" in latin for jaskier[amor super omnia i think??], and the one jaskier picked for him is something poetic like "this is the shape of my love," meaning ring-shaped, meaning endless. he thought it was very poetic and was instantly like THIS ONE you HAVE TO geralt

[at first geralt wont do it-- complaining, tucking in closer, snuffling into jaskier's hair, all half-asleep. at one point he rolls all of his body weight onto jask on purpose, just to tease him, but eventually he lets up. takes a moment to stare at jask's face, just becase he can. jask is like "What, whats the matter" but geralt's just like "its nothing, dont worry."]

"oh shit- um. we... we can annul it?" geralt freezes, brow instantly furrowing, and jaskier scrambles to make excuses about how it really isnt htat big a deal, happens all the time when he's drunk and the night is right, and really he's just trying to make geralt feel better because he's terrified of ruining their friendship, BUT]

Marching Band Day

Meant as a day to build awareness around the ‘marching arts’, Marching Band Day is all about those upbeat, often cheerful bands which also happen to be moving around while playing.

Taking place on March 4th (‘march forth’ – get it?) this day is for all band geeks out there to celebrate one of the most musical of past-times.

I did the marching band all throughout junior high and high school. Music was one of my favorite things in school.

Marching Band Day is a day that has been designed to build awareness around the marching arts. It is all about those cheerful and upbeat bands, which happen to move around while they are playing music. You will often find that marching bands play an important role in a lot of festivals, parades, and outdoor events. Not only this, but they are traditional, having first appeared in the 1800s. Therefore, it is only right that we celebrate this incredible form of music and entertainment with Marching Band Day.

From the Broadway stage to football stadiums, the battlefield, and the training field, you will find marching bands in many different establishments. They delight spectators and performers with their amazing music, as well as keeping military units moving. They perform in grand arenas too, as well as auditoriums and smaller venues. This is one of the most versatile forms of music and entertainment.

Marching bands also play a critical role in terms of keeping the military upbeat. They have long been involved in the roots of the military, and they have evolved as time has gone on. Marching music can thrill the military during times of celebration or moments of upliftment. Marching music also helps to move people during somber memorials as well. They engage with people of all experience levels, abilities, ages, and personalities.

History of Marching Band Day

For a good few years now, there’s been a petition active in the USA to make March the 4th the official National Marching Band Day – but marching bands themselves have been around for donkey’s years. A marching band is always easy to spot even if you don’t hear them first, as they usually have a matching uniform – most commonly of a military-style – and often have members who don’t carry instruments but use flags and other props to add action to the music. These are called a colorguard and accompany most marching bands which you will see.

The first marching bands appeared in the 1800s by all accounts. They originated from groups of traveling musicians who would perform at festivals centuries ago, and as time went on they would become the foundation for military bands. And military bands are where marching bands directly evolved from. Marching bands in the USA are known mostly for performing at sports events – namely, American football matches. The oldest recorded marching band was the Notre Dame Marching Band, which was started up in 1845.

One of the most spectacular things about marching bands is the formation – back when they started up, the band might form the initials of the teams that were to play that day. But in modern times, the huge crowds that events like the Superbowl pulls together, call for something special – video games, film scenes, complex patterns – marching bands make their performance even more special by stepping out in a formation that makes up recognizable shapes when viewed from above.

How to celebrate Marching Band Day

Even if you don’t have a musical bone in your body, you can still enjoy Marching Band Day!

Get back to the roots of the marching band by going along to a sports match, or listening to some of the great, upbeat marching band music out there. There are also plenty of pretty amazing videos on Youtube to see of marching bands doing their thing, including some jaw-dropping formations at some of the big American football matches in the States.

You can be sure that a lot of marching bands will be putting on special performances for this day. It is worth doing a search online to see if any marching bands are performing in your area. There could even be a parade going on in honor of this day. If there is a Facebook group for your local community, you should be able to find information about any events happening here.

Another way to celebrate Marching Band Day is to learn more about marching bands. There are plenty of great information sources online and in libraries too. You will be able to learn more about the history of the marching band and how this musical trend started. You can also find out more about some of the most famous marching bands.

The Ohio State University Marching Band is a good place to start. They perform at events during the semester, including the Ohio State football games. This is one of only a few all-brass and percussion collegiate bands in the United States. There are plenty of other exciting bands as well. This includes Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, the USC Trojan Marching Band, Mucca Pazza, Environmental Encroachment, and the TriBattery Pops Tom Goodkind Conductor.

You should be able to find lots of information about these bands online, as well as videos of their performances on YouTube. You may even decide to celebrate Marching Band Day by learning one of the songs yourself!

Managing your Talents

(1 Thes. 5: 1-11; Matthew 2. 5: 14-30)

Advent is so close we can smell it in the air. Throughout the church year, we've heard scriptures about God's disappointment in God's people and the dramatic and harsh outcomes because they failed to heed God's warnings. With each transgression, the prophets cautioned the people that God was not pleased and would take retribution. Yet, they maintained their stubbornness. Even when God sent his Son, they failed to understand what God offered.

Thomas Melton (the Monk and theologian) reminds us that "understanding of the Scriptures demands a constant alert to all the different dynamic elements that work together," including all the different trends, materials, literary forms, and viewpoints in both Testaments. The Collect for the day raised this learning process beautifully: Grant us to hear the Scriptures, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them so we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope - (that is, the hope of Christ's return to his people).

Christians in the early centuries struggled to digest these promises of Christ's return because they either expected immediate return and redemption or feared God's judgment if it so happened. After 2,000 years, not much has changed. Some Christians continue to believe they will be "raptured," and others left behind to face God's fierce judgment.' Paul writes to the Thessalonians, in his time, that as children of the day, they will not suffer the wrath of God. They are not to be intimidated by misunderstood scripture. They are to continue to live in love and honor God without fear. When we put fear over the things we cannot control, it drives our decisions, and we operate from a place of weakness, not our God-given strengths.

A wrong fear of God is evident in the parable of the talents. God endowed his children with various gifts, material or skills, and responsibilities according to their abilities and for God's good pleasure. Receivers of the multiple talents gave back double what the Master entrusted to them. But, the servant who received one talent failed miserably. He was judgmental of his Master and feared him to the point that he hid the talent in the ground to return it intact to his Master.

I want to play the devil's advocate here because it is hard to know if his fear is justified; he appears to believe his Master is harsh, so he is afraid. He also seems to be pretty risk-averse. Fear of the unknown nature of VOLATILE markets can cause some to hold back on investing, especially if it's borrowed money; in his case, the talents were "entrusted to him." So, again, his fear may well be justified; both scenarios are not within his control. However, he allowed fear to dictate his actions. That's what we must avoid at all costs.

To make the story personal, you must weigh the quality of your gifts – how well do you use your talents; how prepared are you? The word 'talent' can be both literal and metaphorical. It can be a weight in gold, natural aptitude, or time. Either way, it is God's gift to you - something God considers you worthy and valuable, with many possibilities to flourish. Remember that the parable expresses a gift or talent - not an achievement. Yes - achievement and talent are related, but not the same thing. Achievement is a triumphant accomplishment. Talent is a natural aptitude. Indeed, if we reward achievement, it will encourage those with talents to accomplish more.

And, if you are endowed with material or spiritual talents and can produce something spectacular, the question of importance is what you do with these talents. If it is wealth by any measure, do you use it for God and the good of others? If it is leadership, do you try to correct systemic wrongs by putting these talents to work so they multiply and double in value? Or do you hide them because of fear?

The parable is communicating a fair alert - no one knows the day or time we may be required to give account for our Master's gifts, so by all means, don't let your gifts go to waste. Amen!

Putting it under a readmore because I'm a wordy bastard:

Sky Verse by starandrea: Angelic civil war! The crispest, most in-character dialogue! Vast, sprawling worldbuilding! Dean and Cas get together and are very bad at it for a long time! This series obsesses me the way other people are obsessed with dta (which I have not read for fear of commitment but fully intend to eventually).

To Be Restored by serenetyfails: You mentioned this one already but it's worth repeating - it's my favorite trans spn fic that I didn't write myself. Cas's transmasc identity is handled so carefully and so competently, Dean flips out in a way that's both in character and still kind to him, and Sam and Rowena are wonderfully fleshed out. I think many people would look at the premise and worry it's either misogynistic or fetishy, but it's neither, it's such a love letter to Cas's well-earned masculinity. Also, I'm obsessed with Rowena knowing and being buddies with a lot of trans women witches :)

Talk Therapy by shara: This is one of my favorite 'Dean is bad at asking for things' fics, it deals with his inability to want things past what he can give to others really well. I also appreciate that not everything in their relationship is fixed just because they're together, although the amount they love each other is always obvious.

Epilogue by JayneL: A weird little time travel story that is NOT a fixit for endverse, but is exceptionally kind to endverse Cas anyway. It aches very badly. I remember it being pretty trippy but also having to sit and look at the ceiling a while after reading it.

The Love Story of the Runner Up by Margo_Kim: Cas dates a normal human man with a good soul for a little while before he gets with Dean. Both of them know it isn't for forever, but they look after each other anyway. Told through the lens of story-swapping between gay friends and written with so much care & love. (You can thank @okologie for finding this one and making me read it despite my reservations.)

where the weeds take root by deathbanjo: Everyone recommends this fic but it's for a reason. Probably the best post-retirement fic there is, and definitely helped me form the neural connections to write Fenario, haha, I can't recommend this one enough. The complicated Dean and Sam issues are held with just as much weight as the Dean and Cas ones, although both are handled gently.

you and me in the war of the end times by stickthelanding (@tallahasseemp3): Alma knocked it out of the park with this one. THEE shotgunning fic. I've reread it more times than I can count, it has the loveliest atmosphere. I want to gnaw on this prose, said with love!

A Drinking Song by Balder12: Endverse snapshot. This one is mostly just bone hurting juice but it's one of my favorite characterizations of them - sometimes I find that endverse stories either make Cas way too soft or fucked up in a way I find goes too far in a direction I don't agree with, this one feels pitch perfect.

Everyone Is Trying to Get to the Bar by Balder12: All time fave angel true form fic!!! It's deliciously weird and fun, definitely a mind-melter. I only read it the once but sometimes I think about it and get a funny little shiver.

Tall Grass by aeli_kindara: This is another 'universal favorite', but also for good reason. Extraordinarily tender, it's my personal favorite Cas-grows-a-garden post canon story, especially because it manages to write a jealousy plotline that doesn't make me want to bite and kill. Dean's voice is exactly right and everything unfurls with this tender inevitability, idk how else to describe it! It also ends on a final image that's so lovely it's seared into my brain.

Dean (and Cas') Top 13 Zepp Traxx by pantheon_of_discord: Nobody does vignettes like supernatural writers. I love the way the road feels in this one, and how carefully picked each moment is. A string of pearls, this fic.

There's Only One Sure Thing That I Know by blinkiesays: Dean and Cas get trapped in the midwest by a curse that doesn't let them leave the state, and they want to break it until they don't. Being trapped gives them an excuse to want to settle down, but the route they take to get there is, of course, circuitous. This one hurts a little because it takes place while Sam is dead, but it isn't gratuitous in its sadness. Sweet and melancholy.

the taste of gravel in the mouth by deathbanjo: FAVE FAVE FAVE FAVE. I push this one at everyone I can. I'm extremely picky about 'Dean's self loathing' fics, mainly because I think it can veer easily into melodrama, but this author weaves Dean's self hatred and his anger together very seamlessly, in a way that feels real to the show. Also, Cas is perfect.

sweeter coming from my hand by perilously: A story that I liked before Nov5 and withstood the test of time!! Dean and Cas get married/soul-bound in order to both remove the Mark of Cain and fix Cas's grace. Features a formative scene for me where Cas expresses worries about if he has a soul and Dean raps knuckles on his chest, going, "knock knock, sounds like a soul in there." If you like this one, perilously has many good fics that are just as in character.

On Labor by a_good_soldier: I very nearly couldn't finish this one, but not because it's bad, haha. The premise just makes me want to tear my clothes in mourning - Dean knows Cas is in love with him, after getting him back from the Empty, and decides that he should give him what he wants without realizing that he wants it too. Dean performatively dating Cas while trying to talk himself into liking it (not knowing that he does actually like it) is exactly the kind of convoluted bullshit Dean's internalized homophobia would do to him. Nauseating and spectacular. Sticks in your brain for weeks.

canticles by 2street2car: An excellent 'weird girl best friends' fic. After striking out at the brothel, Dean decides to treat Cas to the "first date experience" himself, since the guy might die the next day. To sum it up succinctly: the rituals are intricate. And dirty dancing is referenced!

we shovel all the ashes out by xylodemon: As the author states themself, this fic is a love letter to California - it's a road trip casefic that's so rooted in place, the setting is rich and lush and the atmosphere makes me ache, and not just because it's set in my home state! I saved this one for last because this is another prolific author who has many stories I come back to again and again (Sweet Home and Love: A Retrospective are particularly good), they really don't miss. Usually when I read fic, it's a mad dash to the finish, but I took my time with this one. I highly encourage you to do the same :)

He’s very big on self-love and having confidence, and he’s a firm believer in feeling good about yourself always, no matter what shape or size you are. After all, you gotta feel good to look good!

He’s not gonna micromanage you or anything, and he invites you to his workouts all the time. Even if you have to remind him sometimes that you’re a human and you can’t just lift 1000 pound weights like it’s nothing-

The best spotter, no questions asked. If he even thinks that you’re struggling or he sees your arm shake in the slightest, he’s already behind you, holding up the bar and asking if you’re okay

If weights aren’t your thing or if you don’t feel comfortable going to the gym, he doesn’t mind doing at home workouts either! And he’s the best at correcting your form too

Even though he’s known for his insatiable appetite, he’ll still eat healthy with you. He may not know a lot about human food, but he does know what’s good for the body

Of course he still eats full course meals and will just burn it off like nothing, but he can skip out on Madame Screams’ pastries if it means keeping you motivated

You try to tell him that it’s okay for him to eat whatever, but he’s already shaking his head at you, telling you that you guys are in this together, and that’s that

You ended up splitting some sweets with him on your cheat day because you a.) felt bad and b.) wanted to thank you for being the best gym partner ever

Not to mention the encouragement that he’s always giving you! If it’s an off day or you feel like you didn’t do your best or enough, he’s already there giving you a smile and pulling you back on your feet, saying how much you’ve improved and how far you’ve come, and Beel isn’t the type to just say anything. He really means every word, and it’s more than enough to keep you going

You weren’t coming home for your daily afternoon cuddle session(s), and when you did come home you were drenched in sweat and brushed him off for a shower. It went from occurring just once a week to every other day, and it was making him moodier than usual

When you explained it to him, he was whiny but supportive. Of course he supports your journey to a better lifestyle! He’ll just be supporting you from the comfort of his bed-

You’re definitely dreaming if you think you’re about to get him to join you working out (you should’ve went to Beel if that’s what you’re looking for)

But he’s great at being your cheerleader though! He stays in the room while you’re working out and he’s really cheering you on with his little chants (I mean it’s while he’s lazing around but still are you really surprised?), but you can’t help but still find it endearing and a way to stay positive

If ya’ll seen the new episode you understand what I mean lmao

He’s not one for moving around, but he can help you with what you eat

He’s pretty decent in the kitchen, and he’s got some safe-for-humans healthy snacks that he “borrowed” from Beel and some recipes that he got from Barbatos and Asmo

(Somehow Solomon overheard and volunteered himself to cook and Belphie doesn’t think he ever ran so fast in his life before when he walked away to go grab his “recipe book”)

Makes small remarks about your progress and says it like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, showing that he does notice the changes you’re making even if you don’t. Really helps you stay motivated!

His words may come off as dry and sarcastic sometimes, but he means well. He may have a bit of a hard time showing that he cares, but he does. And he cares a lot about you, more than he can express

Is also prepared to give you cuddles as both rewards and to make up from before

Imagine this...

Savanaclaw boasted a number of spectacular sights--the grand expanse of the Magift stadium, the overview of the open sky from the topmost rope bridges, the glittering indoor waterfall pool... Even so, nothing, in your opinion, could compare to the sunrise.

The flat nature of the savanna lent itself to serving as the perfect stage for the star to slowly raise itself into the sky, almost like a perfectly placed stage prop falling into its place. A dark blue backdrop would give way to warmer hues--then that fabled orb of light would make its appearance, casting the land in its golden glow. Sparse trees framed by shadow, the sun ringing in a new day.

It was breathtakingly beautiful.

... You only wished your boyfriend would appreciate it more.

"Come on, Leona," you whined, digging your elbow into the sleeping lion's side. His room was still eclipsed in darkness, so you couldn't quite make out his face (which probably fixed in a scowl), but you could vaguely make out the shape of his body tossing.

"Five more minutes," he groaned, burying his head against his pillow.

"You already said that five minutes ago," you pointed out.

"It's too early for this," Leona protested--his voice still groggy from a long slumber.

"It's the sunrise. Getting up early is required," you murmured, a hand trailing over his lying form. You could feel the powerful muscles shifting under his skin--but what a waste it was that he so often slept on them rather than put them to some use to haul himself up for the day.

"Don't want to." Leona turned onto his other side--your hand, deflected. "Sleep now, wake later."

"Silly kitty." You prodded at his side, causing him to twitch, and his ears to stand on end. "You can sleep anytime you want, but you can only see the sunrise at this certain part of the day."

"There's nothing special about the sun," he grunted. "It's bright and shiny and an eyesore."

You rolled your eyes and added sweetly, "Plus... I came all this way to be with you, since we don't always get to see each other. That's special, isn't it? I promise it'll be worth it!'

Silence on his end.

"I'd really, really appreciate it if you'd make the effort for me. Pretty please?"

His chest rose and fell--he had taken a deep breath in and expelled it through his teeth. Then, Leona slowly drew himself up into a seated, cross-legged position.

His long locks were matted and messy, falling in a curtain over his slouched head. The lion beastman huffed, pulling back the hair from his face with a hand. And there, slicing through the darkness, were two brilliantly keen green eyes.

"... Alright, fine. Let's make this quick, herbivore."

You moved far faster than Leona, quickly scaling the ladder up to the rooftop of the Savanaclaw dorm and taking a seat amid the rock formations there. He lumbered after you at a relaxed pace, still shaking the excess sleep from himself. A yawn escaped him as he settled down beside you.

"When's the show starting?" he teased, glancing down at you. "You didn't drag me out of bed for nothing, did you?"

"Be patient!" you pouted, playfully swatting at his arm. "There's no set time for these things. It just... happens."

"So demanding." Leona lazily laid his head on you, cheek pressed up against your shoulder. "Careful, or I'll gobble you up. Then you'll never be able to see the light again."

"Haha, very funny." The sarcasm rolled off your tongue naturally. "Aren't you just a ray of sunshine?"

"Maybe if I had caught some more Zs, I'd be less moody," he retorted, "but someone insisted they wanted oh-so-desperately to bask in my presence."

"Oh, you'd be moody anyway! And don't act like you don't want to be spending time with me...!!"

"Do I? Then, since it looks like you're on the defensive... I'll go on the offense...!!"

With that declaration, Leona aggressively digging his head into the crook of your neck. You giggled, his ears and hair tickling your exposed skin.

A single laugh, perhaps, came out a bit too forcefully. That, combined with Leona's body weight on one side, knocked you over and sent you sprawling across the rooftop. He followed suit, falling on top of you and pinning you squarely beneath him.

"Hmph. Look who's come out on top again, herbivore," Leona smirked down at you.

Shadows encircled his face, making his regal features appear sharper than usual. A deadly sort of beauty that you couldn't help but be drawn to.

"You're--"

A sparkle caught in the corner of your eye, pulling you toward it. You jerked your head to the light, and you gasped, your face breaking out into a massive grin.

"Oh...!!"

Leona followed your excited gaze out into the horizon.

Dawn had started to seep through cracks in the night. Ribbons of rose, amber, and gold streaked the sky, brightening up the once bleak canvas, studded in dying stars. Black faded to blue, dark yielded to light. Hopeful, yet hopelessly fleeting, easily slipping through your fingers.

And where the land seemed to end, the sun peered out, chasing away the clouds. It was a golden coin suspended above, glimmering--winking, smothering warmth across the world. A shining beacon, rising above it all.

"It's so pretty," you breathed, utterly spellbound by the sight.

You scrambled upright, arching your head to get a better look. Leona only stared after you, brow furrowed in confusion. “Oi. What do you think you’re...”

“We came to see the sunrise!” you called back with a laugh. You gestured for Leona to join you, pointing upward with your other hand. "I told you, didn't I? I said it would be worth getting up early to see this."

He blinked--but, cool as a cat, his composure quickly returned. "... Mm, yeah. Guess it was."

But Leona wasn't looking at the sunrise.

No--it was your smiling face that was worth it all.

I am like, nothing short of absolutely disgusted at Bryke's portrayal of Katara in the comics and TLOK???

And apparently a majority of the audience is okay with this portrayal??

Just a recap:

This is Katara

A girl with severe abandonment issues because her mom was murdered by a Fire Nation soldier and soon after her dad left to fight in the war, leaving her alone to take care of her brother and the village.

This is Aang

A boy with chronic running away issues. This fault of his has led to a war extending up to 100 years causing death and destruction all around the world.

Katara does not acknowledge this fault of his because she idolises him as the Avatar but still his actions hurt her. A lot.

Katara: It's not brave, it's selfish and stupid! We could be helping him and I know the world needs him, but doesn't he know how much we need him, too? How can he just leave us behind?

Logically speaking, a person with abandonment issues should never be with a person who has a tendency to run away from their issues. But Aang and Katara get together anyway.

But then the comics happen.

Literally anyone who cared about Katara as a character of her own (and not just as Aang's love interest) was infuriated at how she was portrayed. She was stripped of all her autonomy and characterization and was made into "The Avatar's Girlfriend". Nothing of her own.

Some people actually call this relationship sweet. Yuck.

But the thing is, it has panels like this:

Katara, the girl with abandonment issues looks— that's right, abandoned and forgotten.

Even if the "abandonment issues" angle is thrown out of the window, the above panel from Katara's pov is a very unhealthy and shitty experience. (I can vouch with personal experience)

When you clearly don't have anyone else and the one person who you completely dedicate yourself to is completely avoiding you in favour of other people who don't really matter that much just because it makes them feel better/superior, how lonely and abandoned does that make you feel?

Also this sort of behaviour is undeniably selfish and self centred.

This problem of "Aang paying more attention to fangirls" exists in the show as well but atleast Aang corrects his behaviour or accepts that it was incorrect. The comics however:

Katara, who was abandoned, ignored and lonely in this entire comic is reasonably upset about this. But instead of the comic validating her feelings, it makes her feel guilty???

What the fuck??

If this isn't a fulfilment of the male fetish of gfs/wives putting their own mental issues and feelings on a back bench just for the sake of the man's hApPineSs, then what is this?

Not to mention this fetish is pretty disgusting.

This is what young kids are supposed to learn form the comics?

This is harmful for boys AND girls.

But sure couple goals and soulmates or whatever.

Moving on,

The very existence of LOK!Katara is just—

Like what—?

This definitely isn't the Katara I know and love.

Katara, who was completely devastated by her mother's death but got her shit together immediately and seamlessly slipped into the role of her mother and was so damn good at it that her elder brother could conveniently use his coping mechanism to supress their mother's memories with Katara's instead.

You're telling me this same girl grew up to be a sad old lonely widow who spent her days and nights wallowing in the grief of the death of her husband—

Bullshit.

That's straight up romanticization of "life is nothing without you" trope where the wife just becomes a non-functional person after the death of her husband. That, and Bryke not giving a shit about Katara's character.

There's the evident drama of Aang ignoring his two other kids in favour of the Airbending one; leaving Katara with the other two kids. Just like how she was left alone in charge of things as a child.

And then there's this:

They actually take the time to show us that Katara is sad and lonely and abandoned??

What family does she have left at the South pole? None.

And yet, people manage to think Katara is perfectly fine and happy.

Katara, a person with severe abandonment issues spends her entire life being abandoned??

What the fuck Bryke?

Like, it's pretty clear that they didn't give two shits about Katara as a character; she was just supposed to be a pretty arm candy for the Hero™ with some handy dandy waterbending abilities.

But if other people have done a spectacular job of turning this cardboard character into a fully fleshed out, multi dimensional character, why would you throw it away??

Like, that's just dumb.

Why would they take an infinite number of steps back to turn Katara back into a cardboard character and fulfil romanticized misogynistic tropes?
