After Turgon drops the ball (and Eol) Salgant is the one to take Maeglin under his wing and pretty much adopts him. Years later, when the Seventh Gate is built, Maeglin constructs it so it sounds like harps when struck. It’s a gift to his foster father, not that he’d openly admit it (and actions speak louder than words anyway).
But Pengolodh is a petty bitch and casts Salgant as a coward and one who ‘fawns upon’ Maeglin, rather than a father who cared for and was loyal to his adopted son (even though it led to his own death)

I was thinking about how, in fanfictions and in the fandom in general, Elrond is often depicted as a pure Noldorin lord, if not a die hard Fëanorian. And while I do enjoy Fëanorian!Elrond, the more I think about it the more I am convinced Elrond is not the fëanorian one of the twins. Elros is. Elros who adopted seven eight pointed stars as the heraldic device of his whole dynasty, a symbol still used 6000 years after his death. Elros who had Quenya be the official language of Númenor. Elros who decided to leave Arda for an unknown fate after his death; not Everlasting Darkness but not the rebirth in the bliss of Valinor either. He choose to go to a place Elves aren’t supposed to go, just like Fëanor and his sons went back to Beleriand. Elros, the mortal man, who decided to forge his own path in the world.
And I am not saying Elrond didn’t, because Eru knows how much strength, patience and stubbornness Elrond must have to become who he is in LotR. But when I first re-read LotR after reading the Silm, he did not strike me as Fëanorian at all (except for the no oath swearing rule that seems to apply in Rvendell). In fact, Elrond, and all three of his children, are defined by being half-Elven. Elrond is so much at the same time they had to creat a whole new category for him. He is described as kind as summer in The Hobbit, but also old and wise, and his friendly banter with Bilbo in FotR show he is also merry and full of humour. Elrond is both Elf and Man despite his immortality, and this is made quite clear in the text.
But. If I had to link him to an Elven clan, I’d say Elrond is more Sinda than Noldor, and even that is up to debate. Rivendell, this enchanting valley hidden from evil thanks to his power, is like a kinder version of Doriath. Yet, the name of Last Homely House and Elrond’s boundless hospitality make me think of Sirion: Rivendell is a place where lost souls can find s home, where multiple cultures live along each other in friendship and peace.
In FotR, Elrond introduces himself as the son of Eärendil and Elwing, claiming both his lineages instead of giving only his father’s name as is tradition amongst the Elves. It may be a political move, or it may be a genuine wish to claim his duality, his otherness, or even both at the same time. But from what is shown of Elrond in LotR, he seems to lean heavily in the symbols and heritage from the Sindar side of his family, rather than the Noldor one. I already gave the comparison with Doriath, but it seems history repeats itself as Arwen, said to be Lúthien reborn, chooses a mortal life. Yet Elrond doesn’t make the same mistake as Thingol by locking his daughter in a tower and sending her suitor to a deathly quest. Yes, he asks Aragorn to first reclaim the throne of Gondor before marrying Arwen, but this isn’t a whim on his part or an impossible challenge. Aragorn becoming king means that Middle-Earth is free from the shadow if Sauron and Arwen will live in peace and happiness. Which sounds like a reasonable wish for a parent to me.
Anyways, I went on a tangent, what strikes me with Elrond is his multiple identity. Elrond certainly has habits or traits coming from his upbringing amongst the Fëanorians, and he loved Maglor despite everything. The fact he is a skilled Minstrel shows he did learn and cultivate skills taught by a Fëanorion, that he is not rejecting them. There is a passage at the end of RotK, in the Grey Havens chapter, where Elrond is described carrying a silver harp. Is this a last relic from Maglor? Possible.
But while Elros choose the path of mortality and showed clear Noldorin influences in the kingdom he built, Elrond is happy in his undefined zone he lives in. He is an Elf, he is a Man, he is Sinda and Noldo and heir to half a dozen lost cultures and two crowns. He is the warrior and the healer, the only one of his kind in Middle-Earth. And that is why I will never tire of this character and I love so much fanworks depicting him as nuanced and multiple yet always recognisable as Elrond.

This might be common knowledge in the fandom but I didn't realize that The Silmarillion fandom on ao3 is in the top fandoms that have the most gen fanworks! I cant help but feel proud, because in this fandom gen is such an important aspect and Its good to see it up there. Especially since its not in the top 25 fandoms of all time on ao3.
Tumblr media
When it comes too fandoms with the highest proportion of gen, they are top 4! Its beating some big name fandoms when it comes to Gen, which is an underappreciated category on ao3.
Tumblr media
I found these graphs in this work [Fandom Stats] by toastystats where they have a whole collection of works on fandom research and refrence guides. Highly reccomend.
I love to see one of my favorite fandoms on graphs for top works, no matter the genre, even if I get a little overexcited!
Feel free to recommend your favorite Silm Gen fanworks. Please share your own writing too! We all clearly love Gen in this fandom, and are constantly hungry for more fics.

Happy 2024 from Silmkinkmeme
Happy 2024! I hope it will be great year for all of you. 2023 was pretty great for the kinkmeme thanks to all the wonderful authors and prompters.
We end the year with 240 prompts and 117 works. Our Prompt Post 1 has also seen it's fair share of activity․
And now, because it's New Year, I'm going to reveal a stat that only I can see. We have 171 UNPOSTED CLAIMS on Ao3! Of course, some of these claims won't become fics, but so many people are interested in the prompts.
Thank you all for your participation and here's to a more fruitful year.
Just for fun, I'm going to compare the kinkmeme Ao3 trends with the general Silm fandom under the cut.
Right off the bat, the kinkmeme differs from the general fandom. We have 77 explicit works, followed by mature (17), teen (15) and gen (8), while gen works are the biggest part of the larger fandom, followed by teen, explicit and mature.
As for the warnings, the first two places align - No Archive Warnings and Chose Not to Use Warnings. But after these, it's violence, rape and death in the kinkmeme in that order and death, violence and rape in the larger fandom. The kinkmeme doesn't have any fics tagged Underage, and that tag is in the last place in the general fandom.
The kinkmeme's biggest category is M/M with 56 fics. I would call it unsurprising if the larger fandom's biggest category wasn't Gen. M/M is in the second place in the fandom, while Gen is in the fourth place in the kinkmeme. F/M is in the second place in the kinkmeme and in the third place in the fandom. F/F is in the fourth place in the kinkmeme and in the fifth place in the fandom.
Now for the most interesting tags. Maedhros unsurprisingly dominates the character tag both in the kinkmeme and the larger fandom. Maglor is in the second place in both. Interestingly, Elrond who is third in the fandom doesn't even feature in the top ten character tags in the kinkmeme. In the third place, we have Fingon who is fourth in the larger fandom. Notably absent from the top ten of the kinkmeme are Sauron, Celegorm, Celebrimbor, Glorfindel and Morgoth who are all in the top ten for the fandom. Instead, we have Finrod and Curufin. The kinkmeme also has four ladies in the top ten - Aredhel, Nerdanel, Idril and Lúthien - while the fandom has none.
It gets even more interesting in the relationship section. Fingon/Maedhros is of course the most shipped pairing on Ao3, but the first place in the kinkmeme goes to Maedhros/Maglor with Russingon falling behind them. Maemags isn't even in the top ten relationships for the general fandom, which apparently prefers Maedhros & Maglor (fourth most popular relationship in the fandom and outside the top ten in the kinkmeme). Fandom straple Angbang is absent from kinkmeme's top ten and so is Silvergifting, while the former is in the second place and the latter is in the sixth place in the larger fandom. Celebrian/Elrond, Fëanor/Fingolfin, Erestor/Glorfindel, Elrond & Maglor, Fingon & Maedhros, which are all top ten relationships in the fandom didn't make it to the kinkmeme's top ten. Instead, we have five Aegnor/Andreth, four Aredhel/Maedhros and Galadriel/Lúthien, three Celebrimbor/Maeglin, Fingon/Maedhros/Maglor and minor relationships.
The only overlap between the kinkmeme and the general fandom in the additional tags are Angst (third in the kinkmeme, first in the fandom) and Hurt/Comfort (sixth in the kinkmeme, fourth in the fandom). The remaining kinkmeme tags are almost all sexual in nature - starting with PWP and Anal Sex (first and second respectively) and ending with Cunnilingus. There are no sex-related tags in the fandom's top ten additional tags.
That's all, folks. Thank you if you've read it all. Let's see how the trends change in a year.

what are some good non-inc*stious silmarillion ships? I'm mostly into LOTR and have always had the impression that everyone in the silmarillion is related somehow. nothing against people who're into such ships, but for personal reasons I'd like to avoid them if I ever dive into the silmarillion fandom
Re: this I assume
Hi there! "Good" strongly depends on your personal tastes and preferences, especially when there's such a large variety of characters and ships to choose from, but off the top of my head, here are some Silm ships with no known blood relation between the parties involved:
Beleg/Turin Fëanor/Nerdanel Aegnor/Andreth Ecthelion/Glorfindel Daeron/Maglor Celebrimbor/Annatar Caranthir/Haleth Elenwë/Turgon Idril/Tuor Anairë/Fingolfin Eärwen/Finarfin
There are many more (both canonical and non-canonical), these are just a few I've read and enjoyed (some of them being more popular than others). You might also want to check out various Ainur ships (Angbang being the biggest ship in that category) or more human-focused ships (eg Morwen/Hurin or Morwen/Aerin) if that is more your thing than elves. Or even more elf/human ships (eg Finrod/Beor, Beren/Luthien etc). Or elf/dwarf (eg Celebrimbor/Narvi).
Idk, my brain is mush right now and I can barely think straight, so I'm probably not making a lot of sense and I'm sure I'm forgetting many other great ships, but as you can see, there is a lot to choose from, even for people not comfortable with shipping within the Finwëan family bush :D

Bloopers Pt. 2
Funny Texts Pt. 1
This will be in four parts I think. For context, blue is G and gray is A (Because things can’t ever be simple).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1.) context here is I (G) made the form and then proceeded to not share the form with A.
2.) context here is at one point we had like 10% or something of our submissions being Ballister from Nimona. This was also back in like July so that makes sense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3.) I think this one explains its self.
4.) Katie McGrath is great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5.) I finally gave A access to the form. We proceed to have a brief battle over the name of the form with me winning, so it stayed as Untitled Form.
6.) Once again, no context necessary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7.) We check to make sure that people don’t just make up stuff in their entries, so this is what that was about.
8.) For prior context, we were having a discussion earlier about the relationship involved. Also for those not familiar with Lord of the Rings, silm is short for The Silmarillion, and we were talking about Maedhros.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9.) One of our categories for sorting is other language media, and when I (G) was putting characters into it I promptly forgot like half of the non English media. A also forgot to put it in the right category though so.
10.) For context it was a really horrid quality photo of Crazy Jane/ Kay Challis from Doom Patrol.

Tagging system notes so I remember to go retcon the whole blog eventually
Names
Steal AO3's system and stick them all in the same tag to get past tumblrs dumb first 5 tags rule. Characters that I write more have all their names written out. Government name characters whose names aren't specific enough to immediately be determined as Tolkien characters or share a first name. Ex:
#Maenod | Pietunto? | Melpomaen | Figwit
#Glorfindel | Laurefindil
#Rúmil of Lorien (as opposed to #Rúmil of Tirion)
#Merry | Meriadoc Brandybuck
#Samwise Gamgee
#Lindir
Ship tagging format: #ship name | name/name
Also skirts around the first 5 tags matter bs. Maybe add the name X name format too. Ex:
#RúMel | Rúmil/Melpomaen (putting their government names in the tags after for blog searching)
#Halindir | Haldir/Lindir | Haldir X Lindir (?)
#Glorestor | Glorfindel/Erestor
Tolkien categories
Broad strokes:
#Tolkien Fanfiction
#Tolkien Shitposting
#Tolkien Headcanons(?); wherever all hcs, metas, and close readings go
#LotR | The Lord of the Rings #Silm | The Silmarillion #The Hobbit
Still figuring out tagging culture & race & location specific hcs. Maybe something ridiculously long like #hcs; race | culture | subdivision(s) | location if necessary
#Noldor hcs? #Eldarin hcs?
#headcanons: The Last Homely House; Rivendell | Imladris (?)
Timeline Shit / Verses
#headcanons: Avari; Penni; North River Community | Lothlorien (?)
Format: #Annals | AA (Age) YYYY (year) Month DD (if known/applicable)
day Figwit is found: #Annals | TA 4248 June 21
Still figuring out verses. How to tag shit in line with my friend's verses? All of these tbd:
#Main!Verse | Canon
#Oracle!Verse Compliant (?)
#blogname Compliant (?)
Format: #Verse | time period/arc?
General: #v: main | The Scribe of Imladris
Elfling!Mel: #v: main | The elfling of Imladris
Hobbit: #v: main | The Hobbit?
LotR: #v: main | The Lord of the Rings?
Travels 3019 onward: #v: main | wandering east of the sea
#v: living history | here I shall remain until the breaking of Arda
#v: out of history | and so he followed his people West
#v: Third Age |
#v: Fourth Age | a new day will come
#v: Silm |
Crack: #Figwitposting | Crack
Figure out aesthetic shit.
Better tag for #About Mel / #Mel likes
The Last Homely House; Rivendell | Imladris
RP shit
#//OOC | Out of cheesecake
#//(Out of character commentary on writings)
#RP | open starters
#mailbox | writing prompts(?)
#mailbox | ask games(?)
#mailbox | answered(?)
#RP | starter calls

actually you know what, while im thinking about maglor when am i not? there's this persistent thought i keep having
idk, maybe im missing or forgetting a chunk of the novel, but. maglors thoughts and motivations abt the events of the silm just... dont seem to exist til around the sirion-kinslaying era? not that he doesnt have any, thats not what i mean
i mean.... he's fundamentally a follower, despite technically having been acting high king of the noldor for longer than his father and maedhros and fingon combined. whatever he actually thinks about alqualonde, or doriath, or the oath or doom in general, he keeps it to himself (really, he's remarkably quiet about his feelings for someone who's so famous for being a singer, poet, and historian that that's frequently mentioned before the whole kinslaying mess(es)) and sort of goes along w what he's told to do. right up until he takes in elrond and elros, which is painted as his decision in the published version (if not all the drafts, but thats another discussion). and after that he voices relief about the silmaril being placed in the sky when it first sails no 'secure from all evil' isnt making me cry bc i believe he included himself in that category, i'm just cutting onions. at midnight, and later his reluctance to keep going down this path. and its just interesting to me, how him and mae seem to have opposing arcs about it?
bc maedhros starts off strong. he goes to beleriand to revenge their grandfather and doesn't actually seem to give a damn about the silmarils. he refuses to burn the ships, he makes himself a mighty enemy to morgoth, for centuries, and then... the nirnaeth, he loses fingon credibility, and celegorm slides into that void of leadership. doriath happens, and maedhros didnt want to go, but in the end, does, doesn't find dior and nimloth's boys, and just... seems to give up, between then and sirion. because its definitely him who orchestrated that attack, and later he argues with maglor until he caves and they make that last horrible run on the silmarils
this doesn't really have a point, per se. i just had the thought, and it keeps grabbing me at odd moments, so i guess i'd like to hear what anyone else thinks about it

Silm +13 for the fandom asks
Thanks for the asks, dear!💕
13: Which canon or popular fanon relationship I can't stand or feel 'meh' about and why
Oh dear! Another question that's more on the controversial side, hm? Well... let's see😌
To be honest I do have my NOTPs, but none of them are part of the Silm really. I suppose it's related to the fact that there are also no characters in Silm that I actually hate? Which... different story in other fandoms, but I digress.
I suppose the best I have for you in this regard is that I used to and in a select few cases still feel a bit meh about Tolkien's canon m/f ships. Now, as you guys know I do pretty much all sorts of ships (m/f, m/m, f/f, multi, poly, gen, etc), but with a lot of these he's not giving us much, kinda just expects us to take his word for it and oftentimes there's nothing in canon for me to latch on to - and this is where fanon comes in.
For example, when I came back into the fandom I was still a bit meh about like... half of the canon Valar marriages and that only changed once I came up with my own ideas about their dynamics that I liked and heard other people's takes. I've loved my fanon of Irmo x Estë for years for example, but if I just had canon, I'd have no opinion about them at all and be very "whatever".
So there you have it: There's an entire category that can be somewhat meh for me, but nothing that fanon can't fix ^^

screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr: oh man that's. that's a toughie. there's so many to choose from. I mean, the real worst takes I've seen on tumblr are the ones that aren't fandom related, that are really like "wow! you live your real life like this?" but I feel like that's not what this meme is for and also not where I want to go.
what comes to mind right now is that one post that was like "wei wuxian's necromancy is good and wholesome, unlike xue yang's necromancy which is bad and evil," that's a standout just because it was so, pardon the strong language, stupid.
but I'm going to go ahead and give a group mention to the category of takes that basically run "everything would've been fine if [x character] had just done [thing that is either entirely contrary to their whole characterization or, even worse, actively impossible]"
though now I'm trying to remember if the person who was like "how dare you do this to jeff goldblum" about my grandmaster/loki fic was on tumblr or ao3...
topic that brings up the most rancid discourse: you know, for all mdzs/cql fandom drives me insane sometimes (often), I will say for it that I don't see a lot of people throwing around "genocide apologist" at folks, and boy did that come up a lot in Silmarillion fandom back in the day.
in general I feel like the Kinslayings as a whole generated some of the worst and most unpleasant wank I've experienced in a fandom. and I'm not exempting anybody here, on both ends, from the awful "Elwing was a bad mom" wank to the aforementioned genocide apologist wank. if I never see any of it again it will be too soon.
tiniest angriest wasp's nest, as a friend once described Silm fandom, and they weren't wrong

Húrin and Lúthien for the ask game?
-@outofangband
I am so sorry for the late answer!! Tumblr didn't show me that I got an ask D:
lúthien
sexuality headcanon — demi in all categories idk it's just the vibe I get
otp — there is only one. the man, the myth, the legend who returned from death after lúthien convinced the keeper of the dead that true love is a real thing. beren.
brotp — daeron, mablung and beleg. I have... a lot of thoughts on this particular friend group
notp — everyone above and also celegorm
first headcanon that pops into my head — I think I have talked about the idea before that she doesn't really get the purpose of food because she never needed it. after becoming mortal beren not only had to teach her about it but also keep track of the absurd amount of allergies she and dior both had to deal with.
favourite line from this character — every line and I don't just say that because I don't have a physical copy of the silm with me right now - honestly though she's pretty awesome
one way in which I relate to this character — I too would dance in the woods if I could
thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character — literally can't think of anything
cinnamon roll or problematic fave? — queen
húrin
sexuality headcanon — strong bi vibes
otp — morwen
brotp — maeglin, ok hear me out about this one because it's little bit cracky and definitely leans into an au idea that's not leaving me but you cannot tell me that húrin didn't take one look at this orphaned, emo kid and went full adoption mode (morwen would probably sigh but go along with it if húrin had just snuck maeglin out of gondolin lol)
notp — turgon
first headcanon that pops into my head — see the maeglin one above but also the knife he gifted túrin for his birthday was made in gondolin as well
favorite line from this character — same problem as with lúthien, I currently don't have any copy of the books with me but my favourite moment is his and morwens reunion it always makes me cry even more than I already am
one way in which I relate to this character — he's just a really cool dude who loves his family and is ready to annoy the hell out of fight the devil, 10/10 can relate
thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character — nothing really
cinnamon roll or problematic fave? — cinnamon roll
