Goodbye Little Sailor Man
2023, acrylic paint / oil pastel on canvas
Paint study
60cmx80cm (~23x31inch)
Photo reference taken from this backstage photo post by @mcelroyfamilystaff
I'm sorry for being such a weirdo but I think these photos are genuinely beautiful and invite to be interpreted in paint. Big learning and really challenging work. Kinda interesting color study.
I made grids and helping guides digitally and printed the guides on A4 paper with my office printer. Then used chalk to transfer the grids and lines onto the canvas and kept painting from there. There's some slight proportional issue nonetheless so its not fully identical to the photo ref.

if you want my honest opinion grill the grid would be 10x funnier if they also did stuff that was unrelated and useless to racing. like just testing the random skills and general knowledge of these dudes. in my minds eye they鈥檙e doing an mbti test. they鈥檙e doing an obstacle course. silly hand eye coordination tests. they could quiz Each other on stuff. also, divide them into teams sometimes. how fast can you build a tent. let鈥檚 do a relay. like after a while it鈥檚 just poster boards and somewhat bored dudes in racing suits for so many videos in a row. we could fix that

this is something that i've been thinking about and is it true that andretti is a well known name in america, to the point where the avg person knows them more than bigger f1 names?
the thing is that it's people who are already motorsports fans that are saying that everyone knows who andretti are, and like. of course they would say that, because they're motosports fans. they would already know who andretti is, because andretti is a big name in american motorsports. my skepticism comes from whether or not someone who doesn't follow motorsports would've heard of andretti before and be more familiar with them than some of the more popular f1 drivers

My first ever attempt at sashiko!聽 Natural linen thread on denim jeans (left leg), shippo tsunagi pattern.
I thought this pattern would be a good beginner choice, but I was ambitious. I didn't care strongly about making even stitches, I just wanted to try this out.聽聽
I created the grid circle-by-circle (compass and straightedge), using a very cheap drawing compass with a pen taped to it. This turned out to be a TERRIBLE mistake:聽
Fabric stretches as you drag a pen over it (Euclidean construction on not-very-Euclidean surfaces, a bad idea--who knew)
As you move farther from the origin, the grid becomes more and more distorted as the errors compound
Since the pants are intact, placing rulers over seams (bumpy!) will distort measurements.
I also didn't take into consideration that at the intersections, I'd have to choose how threads would overlap. So there are some messy intersections.
But I sure learned a lot from this experience! 馃槄
