OOO! This little slits in his gloves!! That Inej realizes later! I love the little details you add that's so amazing!
Yeah!!! Love adding the slits whenever there's a close-up. I posted the design notes for the gloves forever ago, but here's a detail I like:
Tumblr media
The layered design on the back of the hand is actually some pockets! He could hide away some kruge, lock picks, or maybe even a pardon letter that seems to disappear...
Interesting thing about making a comic adaptation is keeping track of all the information that is revealed. When you're reading a book, the idea of what someone or something looks like builds gradually. No author is going to just describe every aspect of a major character once they're introduced (I'm sure there are exceptions to this rule, but this doesn't happen to be the case with SoC). With visual media like comics, all that information that's sprinkled throughout the book has to be consolidated. There isn't a gradual reveal of detail. Everything has to be there immediately. Otherwise, there'd be a continuity error. For stuff like the slits in Kaz's gloves, which isn't mentioned until Inej notices them like you said, a detail that could only be introduced by a specific character in their POV becomes a detail that the audience knows about from the get-go. While we don't get to discover this detail along with Inej, it does build up a mystery that, once seen through Inej's eyes, is explained after many chapters of buildup.

not enjoying TD:R in a “this is a well-paced plot with consistent tim characterization and a well-suited art style” way but very much enjoying TD:R in a “tim is so gay in this that it’s doing irreparable damage to his cishet self insert image and idc what meghan does with him as long as it means chuck dixon never gets to use him as his weird conservative mouthpiece again” way does that makes sense

A part of me hurts for Dick Grayson (and Jason too in some DC timelines) bc originally, he was eight when his parents died and Bruce took him in and he ultimately started his career in heroism.
Some authors age him up between eight and twelve. But originally he was eight.
Fucking eight.
I think in recent comics Dick is like 27-26, and I can’t stop thinking about how conceptually speaking, in some time lines, he’s been a hero/vigilante for nearly 20 years.
That’s longer than a majority of the justice league have been in the hero game (minus Wonder Woman but she’s literally immortal and a Demi-goddess so that really can’t even count) if we’re following the timeline/universe where the JL was formed well after Batman and Robin (aka Richard John Fucking Grayson, the middle-schooler) had made a reputation for themselves as Gotham’s vigilante duo.
Like it’s actually insane when you think about how this mid-20 yr old Circus kid has like 5 extra years of experience on someone like green arrow who’s well into his 40s.
And even tho I’m glad a lot of comics aged Dick to be like 12 when he started out as Robin, even that is crazy young.
They’re just kids.
It's honestly so terrifying if you think about it because when I was 8 I was playing with Barbie and the most important thing for me was to get my mom to buy me a new Polly Pocket doll while Dick Grayson was out there jumping buildings and punching bad guys, fighting for justice to make the world a better place for other people. He was 8 when he saw his parents die right in front of him and when he became Batman's partner and it's been so long and he's still out there, still fighting and still helping people.
When you don't think about it too hard it's a great thing for silly fics and arts and all the jokes - how Dick outranks most of Justice League members because he has more years of being a vigilante than them so technically he should be the one in charge when Batman isn't there. And I love those stories with my entire heart, saw a lot of arts and tiktoks about it and I think I have a few wips with this trope as well - and you need to admit that it is pretty funny. But it's also so insane. So scary and so terrifying.
But honestly that's one of the reasons I love Dick so much. Because after everything, despite all of that, he's still so cheerful, still so happy. Yes, he's angry a lot and he's definitely not the carefree guy media likes to show him as but I love how he still finds joy in life. How he's the light to Batman's darkness. He's so great.

Hey have you got any comic and/or fanfic recommendations that have Tim and Kon in it, and/or the young justice crew?
Well for the canon comics, if you want to read their main interactions then here's a short reading list:
World's Finest Three (1996) - when tim and kon first met :)
Superboy and the Ravers # 7 (1997)- when kon and bart first met
Robin Plus Impulse (1997) - when tim and bart first met
JLA: World without Grownups and Young Justice (1998) - the three of them team up again, and then go on to become young justice. very funny interactions <3
Impulse #56, Superboy#65,83 - they show up in each other's solos occasionally but idk all of their appearances. these are just some that were on the top of my head
Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day - the team breaks up :[ there's an interesting panel of tim and kon in there lol
Teen Titans (2003) - Of the og team, only tim, kon, bart, and cassie form the new generation of teen titans. They took superboy's swag and yet that boy was still fruity as hell
Adventure Comics (2009) #3 - one of my, if not the favorite moment between tim and conner...<3 (i draw this moment a lot loool)
Red Robin (2009) #9 - the hug <3
Last two were specifically if you want tim and kon stuff, but id read the whole thing too cuz they're fun. There's a some more issues i could list but this should get Most of it. Also if i wrote something down wrong tell me bc i did this off the top of my head >_>
Okay now for fanfics? Let's seeeeee i have some timkon ones i like
fill in the blanks - i literally loveeeeee this one sm it made me giggle and kick my feet up in the air T-T
Gotta Give it Up for Shakesy-P - this one is probably also in my faves it made me laugh so hard. highschool au where tim and conner kind of compete for the role of romeo and it's hilarious to watch them try to woo each other
Gonna Be A Better One (A Thousand Miles to Your Door) - i kind of dont remember what happened in this one but i think it was good?
The Mystery of the Superboy Shirts - this one's really cute n funny lol
Cover Story - fake dating and bodyguard au >:]
Trust Me to Have a Pencil on Hand - short but cute lol and i love the Twist
results may vary - cute bakery au :D
Campaign: Young Justice! - the gang plays dnd. also cissiecassie<3
There are some more but i cant remember the name of em </3 I remember reading one set in the DCAMU universe with ROTS!kon meeting red robin and tries to go on a date with him but i forgot what it was called D:
My list is very sparse feel free to drop recs <3

Is there any relation between reading Life and Times and becoming a history nerd, or was it just me
Haha, sure could be! I only read some of the Life and Times stories as a kid and I do also love history haha
But then again I also read a bunch of Asteríx and they also deal with history a lot so... who knows what caused it haha

comics+comics media are soooo unnecessarily fat phobic, it's so tiring to have to wade through.
like i'm reading about a team kicking robotic alien ass that has unleashed a plague upon the earth but you think it's unrealistic to have a fat hero exist???? you think someone should shoot lasers out of their eyes and be able to run faster than light and be besties with a talking shark but you don't think a hero can have folds or a stomach or be big and round and soft? you think i want to hear my beloved heroes crack jokes about disordered eating and shame one of their found family members about their body shape (which is, FOR THE RECORD, very thin anyways bc the person who drew it was fatphobic in the first place!)??? you think fat people can't be strong or inspiring or competent or look fucking fantastic in skintight body armor, is that what you think?
get fucked!!

To be completely honest if a character in comics who has been gone for years is brought back just to be used as a prop or a tool for another, with their character horribly assassinated, then I’d rather them just stay gone tbh.

Hi! Im pretty sure someone already asked you this but I really want to know. When working on the comic, do you make a script for yourself or do you "just" work with the book as it is? I know that making a script adds another work to the already long list, but working with the book as it is seems really overwhelming (many words me not likey)
You know, I don't think I have answered this before! Not in-depth, at least. Here's how I do it.
Tumblr media
This is my extra annotated copy of the book (my original copy remains untouched). Got it used and as-is from Powell's. I also have a digital copy of the book when I can't bring this copy with me. I underline certain things I don't want to forget in the artwork, and write little notes to myself here and there. It's not shown on this page, but sometimes I cross things out that I won't/can't adapt like worldbuilding info and smaller flashbacks. If dialogue needs to be changed for lettering purposes, I do that when I'm actually making pages, not at the annotating stage. In the digital copy, I highlight character and setting descriptions to keep track of. This process is actually how I made my second graphic novel, which was an adaptation of a short story I wrote.
The ratio up top is my book page to comic page estimate. Last chapter's ratio was 10:21, which is in the ballpark of 3:7. With it, I've figured out how long each chapter and section would be just for fun. I even have a rough estimate of how long the entire book would be in comic format with nothing cut from it (try plugging in the numbers yourself if you'd like a fun surprise).
If this were a real professional project, I would write out a script myself. I'd want to keep the whole book in mind instead of doing it chapter by chapter. Working directly from the book for how things are structured is just a way to make the comic faster. Even thinking about the last chapter, I have ideas already for what I would change to create a stronger comic adaptation. For now though, I just go off the individual chapter to create something more one-to-one. This project has always been a way to improve my art and comic skills before I graduate, so doing structural rewrites to the story, even though that would be necessary for an actual adaptation, is out of the scope of this personal project I do outside of my classes.

Yeah I'm not done yet.
The thing I keep coming back to is that as much as I'm down to nit-pick things like how characters are written and plot details (and boy are there a whole infestation of nits to pick), what it boils down to is that the basic premise here shouldn't even be happening.
I get they're doing a Thing with Bruce and the after effects of Failsafe and Zur and Insomnia so sure I guess it makes sense to have him acting totally unreasonably. I'm not saying it's a plotline I'm thrilled with, but whatever. This is about everyone else.
You have half a dozen people routinely patrolling in Gotham, who've been doing it for years, who know the city and how it works, who have at least two people who are particularly inclined towards collecting and parsing data for patterns for crime fighting purposes, and none of you noticed anything amiss until Selina called and was like "Hey did you notice my neat new plan I've been doing?"
To that point, in a room full of literal canonical geniuses not a single person has thought to ask any of a dozen very practical questions that occurred to me, a non-genius reader, roughly 10 seconds after reading what The Plan was. Things like, oh, I don't know
How is this going to be a sustainable long-term effort?
For example, what happens when Gotham's wealthiest realize what you're doing and dramatically beef up their security (with tech or with actual people), making it much harder and more dangerous?
Like iirc you, Selina, have definitely had some real dicey situations as a result of your profession, and you're a lot more experienced than these people.
(Hey speaking of which isn't there a whole secret society of Gotham's wealthiest and most powerful who have access to nearly unkillable assassins? Who keeps coming back even though they keep being taken down? You think any of these people might belong to that?)
What happens when the rich folks get pissed and sic the heavily militarized GCPD on you? Don't act like they won't, I'm sure someone's squirreled away stuff from that whole Fear State fiasco.
For that matter, what happens when the costumed villainry figure out who swiped all their henchpeople and decide to object to it, presumably violently?
How many people are we talking here anyway that you're training? How many ultra-wealthy people live in Gotham? How many easily stealable things do they have sitting around to take? (As opposed to, like, other non-liquid fake assets like stocks)
How are you fencing all this anyway? Isn't that a great way to get caught? Or is everyone just stealing cash? (Or did nobody think about the part between "got the valuable thing" and "have usable money from it"?)
How on god's green earth did you ever assume this was going to end in anything other than violence?
Like of course one of your guys got killed. It doesn't matter that you told them no violence, even if they fully buy into that it only takes one panicked reaction when someone's home who shouldn't be, on either side, and there you go.
Look I get what they're trying to do. It's supposed to be a big moral quandary about whether it's right to allow some crime if it decreases other crime, the struggle between Batman being unreasonably violent and unwilling to listen and this new plan of Selina's. First of all that's a weird debate to have when everyone having it is technically a criminal to some degree. And second of all, it doesn't matter, this isn't about the morality, this is about how this plan is fucking dumb and was destined to fall apart even if Batman was still asleep and the fact that any of you are buying it just means there's a gas leak in Gotham somewhere.

Ana love, idk if u keep up with comics but in the new Nightwing run we might be getting a sidekick for nightwing and idk how I feel about it btw :(
Im torn bc like, I have ALWAYS wanted Damian Wayne to be his “Robin” and for them to do a Robin Returns arc but like Robin returns to Dick, not not Batman. Like Robin finally returns to Dick Grayson but in the form of his own sidekick, Damian Wayne. It’s wishful thinking, I know, bc like, no one can have a Robin unless they’re Batman. But idk, the one run where Dick was Batman and Damian was his Robin, his almost son. It holds soooo much space in my heart and I want DC writers to return them to their fatherly-son roots.
On the other hand, I really think it goes against Dick’s character to take an orphan boy (as the new chapters have depicted a boy who had seen his dad murder by (possibly) Heartless) and do the same thing Bruce did to him (aka child soldier) when he’s seen the path himself and his friends have gone down due to following in their parental figure’s footsteps.
Like, I can see Dick picking up a sidekick that has already been brought into the vigilante world by someone else (YK LIKE DAMIAN WAYNE) bc he would take it as his responsibility to look after them and make sure they’re still somewhat protected and still have their childhood and innocence even tho they’re been forced into this line of work.
But I really really really can’t see THE Dick Grayson introduce an innocent kid into the hero life.
He’s fr recognised as the hero Batman should have been. So I think it goes against his character to follow in Bruce’s footsteps like this…
Fr when I catch you Tom Taylor - when I catch you 🤨
It's the first time I'm hearing about it actually but I feel you so much, anon!
I really want Damian to be Dick's Robin. I want him to become Nightwing in the future. Dick had a greater impact on Damian - because Bruce wasn't there but also because Bruce is kinda shit at dealing with people, while Dick is... well, Dick haha And yeah, Robin was always Batman's partner but maybe it should change now (soon?)
And I too don't think Dick would ever get the child he adopts into the vigiliante business. Or any child to be honest. He wouldn't want it - he knows firsthand how it is to be the child soldier, all the danger that comes out of it and I know that he would do everything in his might to stop the kiddo from following in his path. Unless the writers do something smart for once and go with the whole "I can't stop him so at least I'll keep an eye on him and protect him while he punches bad people" - the same way it was with Bruce and Dick at first but still... I don't really like it. It could be fun if Dick just adopted the kid without all that sidekick crap and writers would focus on more family shenanigans, maybe with Damian being the jealous little brother/son - but I bet DC would think it's too boring 🙄
And yeah, you're totally right about Dick taking under his wings a kid who already is a vigilante and how he would never bring a new kiddo into the vigilante world. It would go against his character so much but... not like writers really care about that stuff anymore.
I think there would be a way to write that story pretty well and not fuck up Dick's character entirely though the sheer idea puts a sour taste in my mouth. But if you're saying it's going to be Tom Taylor's run... well, I don't have a lot of hope 😫
We just have to wait and see, I guess 😔 And hope for the best

I want to read the dc comics, but I have no idea where to start. Which one do I read first?
I gave recs for what I started over here and they’re mainly what I started with so you can understand what I draw, but here are some more :) when I first started reading comics I went for shorter ones but as you read you get exposed to characters and you’re like “I wanna read more of them” and then it all spirals from there. I think it helped me get used to reading comic bullshit lol. I only started reading this year so there’s a lot I haven’t read out there.
1. Supersons 2016 (very cute and more lighthearted, three series, finished so it’s about 30 ish issues in total i think, Damian Wayne/Robin and Jonathan Kent/Superboy are the sons of Batman and Superman and they get into shenanigans and have a cute friendship. I really like these ones😊)
Tumblr media
2. Young Justice 1998 (older so dunno if you wanna start with it, but it’s fun and wacky and I love it, 55 issues plus some crossover/tie in issues so probably like 60 ish issues, features Tim drake/robin, superboy/Conner kent, impulse/Bart Allen, wonder girl/Cassandra sandsmark, greta Hayes/secret, arrowette/cissie king jones, plus more like empress/anita fite, slobo, and red tornado.)
Tumblr media
3. Graduation day (mini comic that is 2 or 3 issues about breaking up yj and the titans smh smh) then the core four (Tim, Bart, kon, cassie) join the teen titans
Teen titans 2003 (grittier and edgier than yj but has it’s nice character moments here n there, about 100 issues, but I’m not gonna lie if Conner isn’t in the issue I kinda zoned out or skimmed it ummm >_>)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Batman urban legends. ( ongoing, anthology of several stories and characters, good if you wanna meet a lot of Gotham based characters. This was like my first legit exposure to dc comics specifically so I’m putting it here)
Tumblr media
5. World’s Finest 2022 (ongoing, Um I think there’s 5 or 6 issues out rn. It’s revisiting Batman, Robin (Dick grayson), and Superman’s first years together and it’s reallyyyyy cooooooool. I love the vibes and art. Feels very authentically comic book-y. Dan mora is my favorite dc artist Honestly . Lots of others show up too like Supergirl and Doom Patrol 😊Actually this is Probably my fave out of the new comics)
Tumblr media
6. Batgirls 2022 (ongoing but there’s like 9 issues out I think??, features Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, and Barbara Gordon, who have all held the mantle of batgirl. Also the art slaps.)
Tumblr media
7. Batgirl 2000 (70 issues, about Cassandra cain’s run as batgirl, I haven’t finished it but Its like a really lauded run and is well written so go read it)
Tumblr media
8. Batgirl 2009 (26 issues I think, this is about Stephanie brown’s run as batgirl, she is my beloved I love her so much and her jokes are so😖💜)
Tumblr media
9. Red Robin 2009 (26 issues I think?, runs parallel to Batgirl 2009 and Batman and Robin 2009, I put this one last bc I feel like it needs a Lot of context unlike the others where you can just jump into it but it is short and It was also one of my first comics so 🧍🏻‍♀️. Basically Tim drake had a solo run (Robin 1993) but it’s over 100 issues and I haven’t even read all of em bc there’s. So much. So if u wanna read more tim drake stuff I’d suggest looking up a reading list bc he debuts in the Detective Comics issues and then gets his own solo. Anywaysss so basically a lot of shit happened lots of friends n family died or “died” leaving Tim in a pretty bad place. Bruce is assumed dead, so Dick becomes Batman and makes Damian his Robin, and Tim takes up the Red Robin mantle. okay actually you can easily pick up the context when u read so nvm😗✌️)
Tumblr media
I was gonna put more but I’m on mobile and hit the photo limit ☹️ Kon and Bart have their solos, I started reading The New Teen Titans from the 80s, Damian has a recent robin run, and I’m planning on reading more supergirl/superfam comics and green lantern corps comics so yeaaaaah there’s a loooooot. Hopefully something here piqued your interest and I didn’t overwhelm you.
