“What people call insincerity is simply a method by which we can multiply our personalities”- Oscar Wilde, The Critic As Artist
“[in reaction to the quotation above] So to act or perform is not the opposite of your identity or your character or interior self, it’s simply another manifestation of it, another means of realising yourself”- Sos Eltis - on Wilde’s Plays
One of the aspects of the Captive Prince trilogy that I think captures a lot of people’s interest, is the layered psychological complexities of Laurent and Damen. We are watching dramatic events of statesmanship unfold on a large scale (the machinery of politics; the movements of armies; the fates of nations) but we are also keenly aware that we are intimate observers of the intensely private lives of Damen and Laurent, and their relationship. Really, the whole trilogy is a masterclass in characterisation, the reader highly alert to what floats on the surface and what is concealed, kept hidden, suppressed, what transforms with time and experience and is made new, when it comes to the essence of who Damen and Laurent are.
I heard the quotes above today (here, if you’re interested) and immediately felt they captured the heart of the tension between the performed self of Damen the slave and Damianos of Akielos, and too, Laurent’s performative selves around Damen and his authentic personality.
Tumblr media
I think what’s key here is that you cannot splinter yourself into selves which function separately of each other, no matter how hard you try. The choices we make in the external self we present to the world, even in our deceptions, often (not always but often) rise from a place within us that have a psychological reality (it is very difficult to pretend to be something you completely are not, long-term). Furthermore, acting the part requires action and how you act and behave, inevitably, will have some sort of effect on you, and your true internal self (whatever that effect may be).
The problem arises, when it comes to cohesion. Human relationships rely on truth and trust- of knowing others, and being known. We may allow a person to be multi faceted, but there can only be one of you. No one gets to be more than one person.
In normal basic narrative convention, it is the villain who is unmasked, who has lied and in the unmasking, his false persona ‘dies’ and his real persona emerges. Pacat does show how overly simplistic that is with poor, antagonistic, manipulated Aimeric and Jord’s comments. Pretending to be two things to justify your actions doesn’t work. (We’ll leave the Regent out of this conversation for there are those people, very few in number I hope, capable of great evil, who lose their humanity and that would be him).
What do you do then, when your protagonists- your heroes- have been lying for survival? The multiple selves they have been forced into, must now be healed, the fragmented must cohere.
Let me apply this to Damen, first.
When Damen comes to Vere, his persona as Laurent’s slave becomes an avenue for him to, as Wilde puts it ‘multiply his personality’. He can become something beyond just Prince Damianos, beyond Exalted. The act of pretence allows another part of him to manifest; a part that was buried beneath the surface of his royal status. Someone who can show humility and deference, as well as dominance, someone who can socialise with those ranked far lower than him in an easy, likeable way, someone who can learn to see the world outside of his own cultural mores (ones that have been drummed into him as a child), and be objective of the flaws within them. Someone who can enjoy the thrill of a mad-cap adventure, of using his brain and brawn together in a way that delights him. Thus Damen-the-slave is arguably a hitherto unseen facet of Damianos-of-Akielos, made real by the performance.
With the arrival of Nikandros, Damen is finally forced to/allowed to shuck off his identity as Damen the slave and become Damianos the King. Interestingly, an entirely new role for him which will allow him to take his new self forward.
This allows us to see another aspect of identity- the metaphorical dying off of the old you when your fundamental values are torn down and must be reshaped.
Tumblr media
He has been irrevocably changed by the events we see in Captive Prince. No one truly loses their old self entirely, but he understands he can never truly return to the person he was before.
What now of Damen’s relationship with Laurent? I think Pacat realised that had this happened in front of Laurent, it would have caused too great a schism in the pretence the two colluded in. I think it was too much of a psychological blow for Laurent to take.
In fact, I think Laurent knows this and as part of his planning, had Nikandros arrive at Ravenel after his departure, deliberately. It’s a very cool-eyed piece of planning too, as not only does it protect him emotionally but it also allows him to appear innocent of Damen’s identity to the Veretians, and saves him from having to act out the part of a great betrayal which would potentially disrupt his plans to use Damen in a military sense. Laurent nearly always kills multiple birds with one stone.
Damen is given space in this moment in the novels away from Laurent, is given his oldest, closest friend, in Nikandros, who loves him, given a piece of Akielos almost, in being surrounded by his own people, talking in his own language, and in doing so, he starts to come together as himself.
But what of Laurent, and his relationship with Damen?
The only way to heal this is through Laurent’s acceptance of who Damen is. Truly, once and for all. I’ll come back to how this happens, in a moment.
Let us now look at Laurent’s journey. Difficult, private, complicated Laurent. For him, all of this will be far, far more painful.
So Laurent too, is changed by his own insincerity. It is clear that he has to make some very difficult choices in Captive Prince, torn between a venomous hatred of Damen, his uncle’s machinations and the ways in which he can, if he were to be objective, use Damen as pawn to further his own ends. The hatred wins out at first, clearly, his hand only stayed by the Regent, by force. After Laurent is stripped of Varenne and Marche, then forced to the border, he must act in a way that suppresses his hatred, swallowing it down so far that we barely see it for much of Prince’s Gambit. In to that pool of venom though, the small pebbles of Damen’s decency, his trustworthiness, start to make ripples, and with each adventure they have, Laurent fundamentally starts to change as the part of him that can trust, does come out and trust. Laurent is playing a part of pretend partnership with his enemy, but he cannot deny the part that he is playing is completely false, because it is not.
Even Laurent performing as a pet, could be viewed in a new light if we see these things as manifestations as opposed to outright lies. Damen blames the earring for reframing Laurent as sensuous, but it is Laurent’s performance that allows his deeply-buried sensuality to be expressed. Laurent is not, as he wants people to believe (that Damen almost believes) “made of stone”.
Laurent’s reactions in Chapter 3 and 4 of King’s Rising, when he is pure, acidic poison, pushing Damen away as far as he can, is all about pain, about self-protection and self-denial. I could spend an age unpicking it all, all the layers and complexities and hurt, but honestly this already overlong post would be three times as long. And it’s gruelling, I think to read, and to analyse. It’s so private and intimate, it puts us all through the emotional wringer. I’ve picked just a few moments:
Tumblr media
It breaks all our hearts to read this. We know Laurent is capable of great cruelty when he’s angry. But this is cruelty from vulnerability, from a place of great inner pain. To love Damen feels like giving up his love for Auguste, the ultimate betrayal. It’s also a huge cornerstone of his identity.
Look at how his hero-worship of Auguste helps him to survive Govart in the cell:
Tumblr media
Oh Laurent. The vulnerability in this is just heart-breaking. How clear is it, that this is how he survived for so long? Every time he felt like fear or despair might overcome him, he thought of what Auguste- the brave, golden hero of his life- would do and uses that to battle on. He is so used to being completely and utterly alone, that no-one will rescue him:
Tumblr media
Re-reading this, even after having read the novels a few times, brings me to tears.
Laurent is going to have to undergo a Earth-shattering change to accept Damen. Anything else just wouldn’t work. He is suffering when he says he endured Damen’s “fumbling attentions”, his face “white” because I think he is being split in two, his heart torn.
Tumblr media
His mind, at this point cannot accept Damen as the ‘prince-killer’, as Auguste’s murderer and the man he is in love with.
The two also must confront the lies between them, to heal. That Damen the slave was a deception.
Tumblr media
I think it is easier for Laurent to pretend that Damen as a slave is not in any way Damen as a person. It’s cheating, I think, to ask him to kiss his boot, as if the actions we do when in fear of death or pain, defines us totally. It’s a way for him to try and run away from the truth. Damen, in saying he is “the King” is right to say it. Laurent has to accept Damen as an equal, recognise his power, before they can move forward.
It is very hard to watch what Laurent does next. How hurt he is, but also how he wants to hurt Damen. He’s lashing out but underneath it, is a vulnerable young man, in pain and who can’t help but show it. Who would rather Damen leave him, hate him, as doesn’t that make it all so much easier? Maybe part of him wants Damen to look at him and see, this is who you love. But also, take responsibility for how much you hurt me, then and now.
Tumblr media
Damen has this ability to penetrate Laurent’s defences, and when he says “it won’t bring your brother back”, the “violent silence” (what a great oxymoron) shows just how it lanced through him. Laurent’s response really is him saying what, do you think you’re so noble? That you know me and can teach me to be better? To heal? And yet you were willing to wreck me, by fucking me under false pretences when you knew my uncle’s intentions, when you knew it could destroy me?
He’s not wrong either. Damen was being selfish. The first time they had sex, it was a desperately painful moment of Damen having to leave and wanting to stay with the man he loved. He took what Laurent offered, even though he shouldn’t have. Pacat’s commentary on this suggests it all happened too fast, and that had it been slower Damen would have stopped it, would have realised Laurent was not in the right state of mind. Wanting to forget is not the same as wanting the man you love.
Laurent’s mimicry of Damen at his most vulnerable, in his own language, of how much he wanted Laurent, when he had utterly forgotten himself and thrown his soul into making love to him, hurts because it’s meant to hurt. Laurent crosses every possible line to push him away, to belittle him, because Laurent’s only known mode of survival is to use anything and everything at his disposal, honour be damned.
I think in these two chapters, this is Laurent’s attempt to sunder himself completely from Damen. To revert back to Laurent, Crown Prince of Vere, heir apparent, poised to take his throne, a cold and ruthless strategist.
But the part of him that pretended, and was changed through the pretence, is alive inside him and cannot now be simply planned away.
The journey through King’s Rising to bring them back together is Pacat showing step by step how Laurent will finally allow the two parts of himself, the part that loves Auguste as a brother and the part that loves Damen as a romantic partner, to come together.
Pacat writes this exquisitely in the scene where they have sex with no pretence between them, where the naked, stripped down vulnerability of sex functions finally as them coming together as their true selves, baring their souls:
Tumblr media
That phrasing “the painful exchange of brother for lover” is Laurent understanding that it is time to let someone else have supremacy over his heart, to let himself love Damen, to understand that the way in which he mythologised Damen as a grotesque enemy and Auguste as his heroic protector, must now be exchanged with human reality.
In this moment, the two seem reborn. Damen thinks that he “never felt more like himself” as they join together. Laurent for the first time uses his “little name” reserved for intimates, “like it meant everything, as if Damen’s identity were enough”.
When they wake up the next morning, they both finally seem like themselves. Two young men. In love and able to delight in each other. A fundamental part of their healing has begun. It will continue, in the Summer Palace, perhaps continue for a long time, but it began with their fractured selves coming together, so that they too, can come together, and be together, free to forge new selves now as part of a pair, halves of a whole, for the rest of their days.

. . . ♡ 🧸 CHILDHOOD ! ? ★ ゚๑
Sarang was born as Xu Xiang Mei, in Nanchang, China, where she will have lived there the first years of her life. At the age of 2 The care of the biological family was taken away and Mei was taken to a foster family , due to drugs addiction and economic problems. Here, she lived in foster care with an elderly lady who cared for five other older children. At the age of 6 she was adopted by a loving Korean family, legally changing her name to Kim Sarang, due the additional love she has brought to the family.
When she saw her "new" family for the first time , she was already welcomed with open arms by a boy five years older than her : her older bother, Jihoon. He had been eagerly awaiting her arrival and immediately embraced her into the family. He immediately took on the role of a protective and caring older brother, guiding Sarang through the unfamiliar terrain of her new life in South Korea.
The transition was not without its challenges, as Sarang had to adjust to a new culture, language, and way of life.  Despite the initial language barrier, Sarang surprisingly quickly picked up both Korean and English, excelling in her studies and impressing her teachers.
Sarang's remarkable journey continued as she blossomed in her new family and surroundings. Her bond with Jihoon grew stronger with each passing day, and their unwavering support for each other was a source of strength throughout their lives.
Sarang's determination and intelligence led her to excel academically. Her teachers recognized her potential, and she soon became a role model for her peers. She not only mastered Korean and English but also demonstrated a natural talent for mathematics and science.
As she reached her teenage years, Sarang's passion for learning expanded beyond the classroom. She developed a keen interest in music, particularly the piano, and poured her heart into perfecting her skills. Her dedication to music not only enriched her life but also brought joy to her family, as she often played beautiful melodies to brighten their home.
At the age of 12, she experienced a terrible incident: her birth family somehow managed to locate her and intruded into her life, attempting reconciliation. She then discovered that she had 2 younger sisters and a brother, of whom she had never known. The biological parents were initially kind, but over the weeks, they became suffocating, eventually leading to her being kidnapped by them. It took three days for her to be found by the police and her adoptive family. Since then, she developed a fear of trusting people. The situation caused her a lot of anxiety, to the point where she started seeing a psychologist for help. She was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and social anxiety, which has significantly improved over time with medication but remains something she can't completely get rid of.
To get some fresh air, at the age of 14, she decided, along with her parents, to spend six month studying abroad in America (Chicago), where she perfectionated her English. In Chicago, she pursued various extracurricular courses, including ballet, revealing one of her innate talents. Before long, she fell in love with dance, starting to take lessons of all kinds outside of school and continuing even beyond school hours.
Sarang's return to Korea marked the beginning of her journey towards becoming an idol. She carried with her the experiences of her challenging upbringing and her unwavering determination.

. . . ♡ 🩰 PRE-DEBUT ! ? ★ ゚๑
As Sarang continued her education in South Korea, she found herself drawn to the world of music and entertainment. It was during a school talent show that her talents truly began to shine. She gave a mesmerizing performance, combining her piano skills with her newfound passion for dance. The audience was captivated by her talent, and this moment served as a turning point in her life.
Encouraged by the positive response she received, Sarang decided to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. She began to take dance and vocal lessons, honing her skills further. With the guidance of her adoptive family, who supported her dreams wholeheartedly, she started attending auditions and talent showcases.
One day, while attending a talent showcase in Seoul, Sarang caught the eye of a talent scout from Cube Entertainment. Impressed by her stage presence and unique blend of talents, they offered her an opportunity to audition for the company. Sarang seized the chance with both hands, pouring her heart and soul into her audition.
Her performance at Cube Entertainment left a lasting impression, and they saw in her the potential to become a star. They offered her a trainee contract, and Sarang gladly accepted. From that point on, she embarked on a rigorous training regimen, learning the ropes of singing, dancing, and stage presence, all while preparing for her debut in the K-pop industry.
However, the journey into the K-pop industry was not without its challenges and pressures. Cube Entertainment had strict standards when it came to physical appearance, and Sarang, like many other trainees, found herself subjected to intense diets and continuous training to meet those standards. The industry's emphasis on image sometimes led to unhealthy practices, and Sarang began to struggle with body image issues.
The constant comments about her physique, coupled with the demanding training schedule, took a toll on her mental and emotional well-being. The comments on her appearance and weight became a constant presence in her life, fueling her insecurities. Sarang's pursuit of her dream came at a high price, and it was during this period that she developed an eating disorder (ED).
As Sarang's battle with her eating disorder escalated, it became increasingly clear that her health and well-being were at risk. The relentless demands of the entertainment industry, coupled with the pressure to maintain a certain image, took a severe toll on her physical and mental health. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Cube Entertainment and Sarang's adoptive family decided that it was in her best interest to step away from her trainee life.
With a heavy heart, Sarang made the difficult decision to leave the path of a K-pop trainee behind. She understood that her health were more important than any dream or career. It was a courageous choice, one that prioritized her well-being over external expectations. Unfortunately, instead of improving, the situation worsened: Sarang fell into depression. This was the worst period for her, lasting for a few months.
One fateful day, when Sarang was at one of her lowest points, she happened to cross paths with a kind soul who would change the course of her life. While attending a local event in Seoul, she met Bang Chan, a talented musician and producer who was also on his own journey in the music industry.
Bang Chan saw the pain in Sarang's eyes and recognized that she was struggling. He took the time to listen to her story and offer a compassionate ear. His genuine concern and support gave Sarang a glimmer of hope that had been missing for far too long.
Moved by Sarang's determination and talent, Bang Chan introduced her to his connections at JYP Entertainment, one of the most renowned entertainment companies in South Korea. He believed in her potential and saw her as more than just a trainee, but as a person with a unique gift waiting to be nurtured.
With Bang Chan's recommendation and mentorship, Sarang began a new chapter in her life as a trainee with JYP Entertainment. The atmosphere was different from her previous experience, emphasizing a healthier approach to training and a focus on mental well-being.
Under Bang Chan's guidance and the nurturing environment at JYP, Sarang gradually regained her confidence and started to heal. She continued to work hard on her singing and dancing, but this time, it was accompanied by a sense of support and understanding.
She was the first member, after 3racha, to be chosen as a member of Stray Kids, the group with which she debuted, which gave life to her life as an idol.

Teezo Touchdown Captivates with his First Solo Show in Austin
On May 31st, I embarked a 225 mile journey to a familiar venue, Emo’s. Despite having an early flight the next day back in Dallas, there was one reason I just had to make the drive; Teezo Touchdown was about to headline his first ever “Spend the Night Tour” in Austin.
Months prior I had attended Circus Maximus performed by Travis Scott. While Scott’s performance was impressive and definitely one to remember, Teezo Touchdown’s opening stood out to me as a true demonstration of what a promising upcoming performer looked like in the flesh. Teezo made it clear he was committed to become the very best he could be for his live performances. My first time seeing Teezo made me feel like I was witnessing history; He was becoming more comfortable with performing for a crowd and energizing them to enjoy the show, that of which I needed to follow up on.
While Teezo may not be mainstream yet, he brings a unique quality that serves as the key to what it takes to be mainstream. Teezo Touchdown creates a sentiment that being unapologetically yourself even in the face of discrimination reaps fulfilling rewards through consistency. Sitting at 32, Teezo felt at points in his career that he would become too old to succeed with his music, represented by the song “Impossible.” However, Teezo never gave up on working on himself, which eventually led him into the opportunities of working with the likes of Tyler, Chance the Rapper, and Travis Scott. Touchdown’s genre is hard to pinpoint as he is consistently creating unheard fusions of genres, flows, and sounds. With that being said, his jabs to show the world who he truly is has clearly paid off in his upbringing, just taking a little more time than we typically expect.
Although Teezo has been in the industry for a few years now, Teezo has a unique way of posing himself up to be the next big thing. At the concert, he reminds the crowd that even if you weren’t there since day one, your day one could begin that night. Teezo’s feeling of novelty has allowed him to reach a sweet spot in his career, as the audience he curates at “smaller” venues (as compared to stadium tours) is passionately excited to see something completely fresh. Walking us through his story starting in his small town of Beaumont, Tx, Teezo’s performance felt like seeing colors for the first time. Touchdown has this very apparent determination to reciprocate all the love and support he receives by giving the people a show that represents pure creativity; Thus, this show gave us one of the most excited and diverse audiences who maintained the energy throughout the very end of the show; all while wrapping up by 10:45 (an under appreciated trait to live shows!)
His love for Austin added to this sentiment, as the phrase “Keep Austin Weird” was something that spoke to him throughout his time growing up in Texas. I want to say at this point, Teezo has given me (twice) an unforgettable performance that has given me a glimpse into what Austin stood for decades ago, long before the sudden influx of population seemingly saturated the culture. I couldn’t help but compare this performance to what I imagine seeing Michael Jackson live felt like, as his truly captivating aesthetic and energy brought what felt like magic to all of us. I commend Teezo for reinforcing the values I am actively pursuing throughout my early career, that of which creativity, personality, gratitude, and connectedness reigns rule, ultimately illustrating the power of love through music.

Uncover Hollywood’s Secrets: Top 10 Iconic Movie Scenes Using ADR
Have you ever watched a movie and been completely captivated by the perfect delivery of a line? It might surprise you to learn that many famous movie moments were actually recorded later in a studio using a process called ADR, or Automated Dialogue Replacement. This technique helps fix audio issues and improve dialogue clarity.
Here are top ten iconic movie scenes where ADR played a crucial role.
Tumblr media
1. “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” from Jaws
This famous line, said by the character Quint after seeing the shark, was originally hard to understand when filmed. Actor Robert Shaw re-recorded it in a studio, giving us the clear and memorable line we all know today.
2. “I’m walking here!” from Midnight Cowboy
Dustin Hoffman’s improvised line became legendary, but the street noise made it hard to hear during filming. Hoffman re-recorded it in a studio to make sure his iconic shout was crystal clear.
3. “You had me at ‘hello'” from Jerry Maguire
Renee Zellweger’s heartfelt line was re-recorded in a studio to perfect its emotional impact, making it one of the most romantic moments in film history.
4. The Lobby Shootout in The Matrix
During this intense action scene, Keanu Reeves’ dialogue was mostly re-recorded in a studio. The noise from special effects and stunts made on-set audio unusable, so ADR ensured every line was perfectly clear.
5. “They’re he-ere…” from Poltergeist
Heather O’Rourke’s spooky line was enhanced in post-production with ADR and sound effects, making it even more chilling.
6. “Show me the money!” from Jerry Maguire
Cuba Gooding Jr.’s famous line was re-recorded to capture his energetic delivery more clearly, ensuring it became a pop culture phenomenon.
7. “Keep the change” from Taxi Driver
Robert De Niro’s line in the diner scene was re-recorded to add extra menace and clarity, enhancing the film’s tense atmosphere.
8. “That’ll do, pig” from Babe
James Cromwell’s gentle line to Babe was re-recorded to capture the warmth and sincerity needed for this touching moment.
9. “You’re killing me, Smalls!” from The Sandlot
This funny line was re-recorded by the young actors to ensure it was clearly heard over the noise of their game, making it one of the film’s most memorable quotes.
10. “Here’s looking at you, kid” from Casablanca
Humphrey Bogart’s famous farewell line was enhanced using ADR, making it richer and more impactful than the original on-set recording.
Conclusion
ADR is a hidden gem in filmmaking, allowing directors to fix audio issues and perfect performances. Next time you watch a movie and hear a perfectly delivered line, remember it might have been thanks to the magic of ADR. This technique ensures the dialogue we love is as clear and impactful as possible, making good movies great and unforgettable moments truly iconic. At Aimers Production, we understand the importance of flawless audio and are dedicated to bringing the magic of ADR to every project.

𝔢𝔠𝔥𝔬𝔢𝔰 𝔦𝔫 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔣𝔬𝔯𝔢𝔰𝔱- part 1
To start this off, this is my first post on here. I've been working on this story for quite some time, after it sort of came to me after watching the movie 'Red Lights' with Cillian Murphy as Dr. Tom Buckley. In my original story, the male character is named 'Jack', although for sake of fan fiction purposes I've changed it to 'Tom' in this version.

Chapter 1
“Two hearts that shouldn’t talk to each other become close” -
Promises by Megadeth
The hallway was empty, except for Archer Thompson, a young woman who had always felt more at home in the shadows than in the light. She leaned against the wall, her eyes closed as she took deep breaths, steeling herself for the day ahead. Her simple outfit, consisting of black shorts and a tank top, revealed a body peppered with inked images that told the story of her life. A small music note on her wrist, a quote running down her spine, an intricate landscape on her thigh – each one held a memory, a meaning. As she opened her eyes, Archer couldn't help but feel like an imposter in this world of bright classrooms and polished students. She had never quite fit in, even as a child. And now, as a grad student studying psychology, she still felt like an outsider, an enigma.
Her phone buzzed, revealing a text from Emma Lewis, Archer’s best friend who was traveling abroad for school. She had been away for months now, and every time she reached out, it felt like a lifeline back to the life they used to have. The message was short and sweet, attached was a photo of Emma and another girl Archer didn’t recognize standing in front of the Eiffel Tower.
“Wish you were here! Good luck today!” was all the text said.
As Archer stared at the image, a pang of jealousy crept into her chest. She hadn't expected to feel this way, but seeing Emma with someone new in a place they had always dreamed of visiting together made her heart ache with longing for their old adventures. She quickly typed out a response, forcing a smile on her face as she wished Emma well and promised to catch up when she returned.
With a sigh, Archer pushed herself off the wall and made her way to her first class of the day- Anthropology of Ritual and the Occult.
She remembered back to when she was just a teenager, exploring abandoned buildings with her friends, searching for clues of something beyond this mundane world. They would perform their own rituals, calling upon spirits and testing their courage. And although they never experienced any supernatural occurrences, Archer couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something more out there. But as she grew older and delved deeper into psychology and science, Archer had pushed those beliefs aside. She learned about cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias- how people were wired to see what they wanted to see. Yet deep down, she couldn't completely shake off that sense of wonder and curiosity that led her down this path.
The classroom was filled with chaotic, disinterested chatter. Archers' eye immediately drew to the person presiding over it, standing confidently next to his desk. He didn't seem phased by his students at all, despite his young age. The professor introduced himself as Tom Anderson, but he would only answer to Tom, as a way of feeling more connected to his students.
Tom, a man of average height, though a commanding aura, immediately drew all attention towards him. His slightly unkempt brown hair was carefully styled to frame his face, highlighting his piercing blue eyes.
Archer found her seat near the front, prepared to absorb every detail he had to say. Tom began the class with a captivating story about ancient burial rituals, his passion for anthropology evident in every word he spoke. Archer felt herself becoming more enthralled by his every word.
Tom explained how he had spent years studying and living amongst different indigenous and ancient cultural communities, immersing himself in their traditions and beliefs, gaining a deeper understanding of their folklore. As he spoke about the ceremonies and practices surrounding death, his voice took on an almost lyrical quality, painting visceral pictures in the minds of his students.
“The ancient Egyptians believed that the spirits of the deceased should be guided to the afterlife with care and respect. They performed elaborate ceremonies to ensure a peaceful transition for their loved ones, and decorated the sarcophagus with various riches.” he gestured animatedly to the photos being projected to the class.
He turned the projector off and walked over to his desk, taking an object out of the drawer and placing it on the table in front of the students.
“Like I said before, I spent some time among different cultures, this particular funerary mask was believed to ward off evil spirits and guide the deceased safely to the afterlife,” Tom explained, his eyes sparkling with contagious enthusiasm as he continued. “This specific one comes from China, from the Khitan tribe, where they believed masks like this would prevent the body from decaying.”
As he spoke, Archer found herself drifting in and out of focus, her mind wandering to thoughts of him. She couldn't help but wonder about his life outside of the classroom, what his interests and passions were, and if he would ever notice her in the way she was beginning to notice him.
“And that's why understanding these rituals is crucial in our field of paranormal studies.” Tom concluded, glancing at Archer with a small smile.
As Tom concluded the class, Archer lingered behind as her classmates filed out. Tom looked up from his desk, noticing and smiling warmly at her.
“Archer, do you have a question about the class materials or the lecture?” he asked.
Archer's breath hitched at the sound of her name on his lips. She could feel herself blushing as she continued to scan his face.
She hesitated for a moment before mustering up the courage to speak.
Looking up at him, her eyes nervously flickering between his own. He could probably see the wheels turning in her head, feeling unsure of whether she should continue or not. With a deep breath, she spoke.
“Actually, I was wondering more about you, if that's okay,” she asked, her voice soft yet determined.
Tom raised an eyebrow, finding her curiosity both intriguing and admirable. His eyes smiled in a way that suggested he was eager to share more about himself than he did with the class.
“That’s no problem,” he leaned forward, clasping his hands together on his desk, “what would you like to know?”
“How did you get into all of this?” Archer gestured vaguely to the classroom around them.
Tom shifted in his seat before his eyes met hers.
“Well, Archer, it all started when I was a little bit younger than you, probably, about 18. I had a strange experience, and I found it couldn't quite be explained with science alone. It sparked a curiosity in me that only grew stronger as I got older.”.
Leaning back in his chair and crossing his hands behind his head, Tom continued, “I started researching and investigating on my own, really immersing myself into the mysteries of the supernatural. It wasn't easy to get a career started, especially since many dismissed my interests as mere superstition. But I persisted, following every lead and uncovering truths that most people would never believe or see for themselves.”
Archer listened intently, leaning forward as her eyes fixed on Tom's  as she spoke. “So how did you transition from being a lone investigator to a professor? I figure academics didn’t take you too seriously either?” she asked, her voice filled with intrigue.
Tom chuckled softly, a hint of amusement in his tone.
“You're not wrong there. It was rough, getting here. But I guess my persistence paid off, because here I am, teaching the next generation of paranormal enthusiasts.” he replied with a small smile.
As he spoke, Archer's eyes were filled with curiosity, her brain filled with questions, yet not one could come to the surface.
Finally, Tom spoke, his voice teasing and light. “You know, I know that look.”
Archer turned to face him, surprised. “What look?”
“That one,” Tom said, gesturing towards Archer's face with a small smile. “The one of wonder and disbelief mixed together.”
“I had the same look when I was your age,” Tom continued, his tone remaining lighthearted, “when I first started learning about the paranormal. It's a lot to take in.”
“So, I gotta ask,” Archer begins, “what was this strange, unexplainable experience you had when you were younger?” her eyes narrowing with a certain curiosity.
“It was the summer before I started college,” he began, his voice low. “I was camping with some friends in the woods near my hometown. We were all sitting around the fire, just sharing some drinks and reminiscing on high school,” he paused, “when we heard it.” his last words hung in the air as he lowered his voice and she had to focus a bit more to hear him, watching his lips intently as he spoke.
Archer pulled a chair from a nearby desk and sat on the other side of his desk, her hands gripping the edge of the desk and her eyes wide with anticipation.
“Heard what?” she urged him to elaborate.
“A woman's voice, singing.” Tom continued, noticeably tensing a little as he spoke. “It was the most haunting melody I'd ever heard. She sounded so far away, like it was coming from deep within the forest, where no one could possibly be.”
Archer’s eyes widened in disbelief. She hung onto every word Tom was saying.
“What did you do?” she asked, holding her breath.
“We were frozen for a while, just our eyes moving in the darkness, trying to see where it was coming from,” Tom recounted, his own eyes looking off into the distance as if the memory was hard for him to share, “but the singing got louder. we feared she was moving closer to us.”
Tom took a deep breath, and continued, “I noticed her first, coming out of the woods in front of us. It was a figure, though not quite human. Her movements were jerky and disjointed, like she was a marionette being pulled by invisible strings.” he paused for another breath, looking up to the ceiling, as if he was picturing it in his head, his eyes glazed over. “All the while, she was singing, her jaw opened unnaturally and never moved, even as her pitch changed. The sound came from all angles at that point, not only from her, just getting louder, even as we ran. We left everything at the campsite behind, just started running, and didn’t feel safe until we were back home. But her voice... it still echoes in my mind, even now. I can still hear it perfectly whenever I close my eyes.”
“That can't be real,” Archer whispered reverently, her eyes wide. She managed a slight smile, scanning his face for any traces of a lie, but his expression remained neutral, his eyes steady and unwavering.
Tom chuckled a bit, as if expecting her reaction. his blue eyes sparkled with a mixture of amusement and sincerity. “Believe me, Archer, the paranormal world is full of surprises. You’ll find that most often the truth is stranger than fiction.”
“So, you think you saw a ghost? Like, you really came face to face with…?” Archer trailed off, trying to wrap her head around the chilling prospect.
Tom nodded slowly.
A shiver ran down Archer's spine  “I think I’m both fascinated and terrified. I can't imagine what it must feel like to witness something like that.”
Tom studied her for a moment before relaxing his expression, smiling softly. “It takes courage to seek out the truth behind the supernatural, Archer. Are you sure you're ready for what lies beyond the veil?” he has an almost teasing tone in his voice, raising an eyebrow at her.
Archer nods, taking his words into consideration before giving him a definitive answer. She had always been intrigued by the supernatural. As a young girl, she devoured books on ghosts, witches, and creatures only seen in folklore and mythology. It was a fascination that never left her, even as she grew up and started university.
“Are you sure about this? I mean, ghosts and spirits are one thing in theory and writing, or even in games but actually conducting a serious investigation? It feels a bit... risky,” Archer voiced her concerns, shifting nervously in her seat.
Tom leaned back in his chair, a small smile playing on his lips.
“I understand your apprehension, Archer. But sometimes, in order to truly understand the unknown, we must confront it head-on. It's all a part of the thrill of uncovering the mysteries that surround us.” he explains, his tone more than convincing.
Archer chewed on her botTom  lip, contemplating Tom's  words as she did. She couldn't deny the rush of excitement that she felt whenever she thought about delving into the paranormal, and it increased tenfold if she imagined him by her side. With a determined nod, she finally spoke up.
“Okay, let's do it. I'm in.” she confidently announced as she looked at him.
“Would you actually like to see more of my research?” Tom hesitated, as if anticipating a negative reaction from her.
“I usually keep everything in my office. It’s a short walk to the other side of campus.” he explains, standing up and grabbing his briefcase.
Archer's eyes widened in excitement, a mischievous grin spreading across her face.
“Lead the way,” she replied eagerly, unable to contain her curiosity.
Tom smiled softly at her enthusiasm, a warm feeling blossoming on his cheeks. He led the way out of the classroom, Archer following closely behind. As they walked through the dimly lit corridors of the university side by side, she couldn't help but steal glances at Tom's  profile.

DANCING VILLAGE: THE CURSE BEGINS - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Lionsgate
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: In an effort to alleviate her mother's ailment, a shaman advises Mila to return a mystical bracelet called the Kawaturih to the "Dancing Village," a secluded location on the easternmost tip of Java Island. Mila is accompanied on her quest by her cousin, Yuda, and his friends Jito and Arya. Upon arriving at the village, they discover that the village elder has passed away, and the new guardian, Mbah Buyut, is absent. During their wait for Buyut's return, they witness a series of strange and eerie events. One of them includes Mila being visited by Badarawuhi, an enigmatic mythical entity who governs the village. Mila is persuaded to complete her mission of returning the Kawaturih, but doing so poses a threat to the village's safety. When Mbah Buyut finally returns, she is convinced to participate in the village's ritual to choose the new "Dawuh," a cursed soul condemned to dance for the remainder of her life.
REVIEW: DANCING VILLAGE: THE CURSE BEGINS is a prequel to the 2022 movie “KKN Di Desa Penari,” which holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing Indonesian film ever made. As a noteworthy achievement, this film stands out as the first IMAX production ever created within Southeast Asia. In 2024, it will become one of only five films worldwide to be made for IMAX. The film's aesthetic appeal is undeniable, boasting a lavish color palette and visually stunning cinematography.
Lele Laila's screenplay is a standalone tale that does not require viewers to have seen the previous film, "KKN in Dancer's Village." It harmonizes family legacy, modern characters encountering an idyllic community, clashing belief systems, and magical realism, while also incorporating traditional narrative structures such as a hero's journey. The screenplay is refreshing in its portrayal of a different and unique culture, making it accessible to international viewers. The story revolves around a matriarchal society where the male characters, with the exception of the shaman, are powerless against the mystical. The dancing in the story is notably sensual without being sexual, and the interactions between Mila, her cousin, and his friends exude an innocence reminiscent of characters from classic children's literature. The plot takes several twists and turns, which are gradually explained as the story unfolds. There are survivors, and the village remains, leaving open the possibility of a return to the "Dancing Village."
The special effects were remarkably simple yet effective, reminiscent of the classic “smoke and mirrors”movie magic. One notable scene is set in a bathhouse where Badarawuhi terrorizes Mila, a terrifying atmosphere created with minimal effects. The costumes ranged from basic to vibrant and intricate, adding to the film’s overall aesthetic and mood.
Ricky Leonard, a skilled composer, combines traditional Indonesian instruments, refined movements, and a rich sound design to create a multifaceted score. The composition seamlessly complements the film's ambiance, heightening the tension and suspense in a subtle yet effective manner.
The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast. Maudy Effrosina, portraying Mila, exudes a captivating blend of innocence and determination as she navigates complex emotions amidst supernatural forces. Actress Aulia Sarah's portrayal of Badarawuhi brings to life a terrifying seductress who embodies the essence of her character's totem—snakes. Diding Boneng presents a compelling character as Mbah Buyut, the shaman. Surrounding him is an aura of intrigue, as he undergoes a transformation akin to Clark Kent's transition into Superman when called upon to take action. Claresta Taufan Kusumarina portrays Ratih, a local girl who provides lodging for Mila and her friends. Claresta infuses her character with sympathy and emotional complexity. Mila's companions, played by Jourdy Pranata, Ardit Erwandha, and M. Iqbal Sulaiman, deliver eclectic performances that are both likable and vulnerable in the face of the supernatural elements.
Indonesia's “DANCING VILLAGE: THE CURSE BEGINS" is a captivating horror thriller that stands out for its enchanting and unsettling atmosphere. Skillfully crafted with beautiful visuals, the story blends magical elements with real-world locations, impressive performances, intricate production design, and an evocative score. Director Kimo Stamboel masterfully balances the chilling horror with a touch of innocence, creating a fairy tale-like quality that sets this film apart. The mythology presented in the film is unique and compelling, leaving viewers eager to explore the first installment, "KKN Di Desa Penari," and anticipate future installments or genre films from these talented filmmakers.

Unveiling the Talent: Exploring the Phenomenon of White Rappers
Tumblr media
In the vibrant tapestry of hip-hop, there exists a subset of artists whose backgrounds diverge from the conventional narrative of the genre. These artists, often referred to as white rappers," bring their own unique flavor to the table, challenging stereotypes and breaking down barriers with their lyrical prowess. Join me as we delve into the world of white rappers, exploring their rise to prominence and the impact they've had on the hip-hop landscape.
Beyond Stereotypes: Redefining the Image of White Rappers
Breaking the Mold
In a genre historically dominated by African-American artists, white rappers have faced their fair share of scrutiny and skepticism. Yet, despite the odds stacked against them, these artists have managed to carve out a niche for themselves, proving that talent knows no bounds. From the gritty streets of Detroit to the suburban enclaves of Los Angeles, white rappers have emerged from all corners of the globe, each bringing their own unique perspective to the table.
Challenging Preconceptions
One of the most significant contributions of white rappers to the hip-hop landscape has been their ability to challenge stereotypes and preconceptions about race and identity. Through their music, these artists have offered a fresh perspective on issues such as privilege, discrimination, and cultural appropriation, sparking important conversations within the hip-hop community and beyond.
The Pioneers: Trailblazers of White Rap
Eminem
No discussion of white rappers would be complete without mentioning the one and only Eminem. Hailing from the mean streets of Detroit, Eminem burst onto the scene in the late 90s with his groundbreaking album, "The Slim Shady LP." With his lightning-fast delivery and razor-sharp wit, Eminem quickly established himself as one of the most formidable lyricists in the game, earning critical acclaim and commercial success in equal measure.
Beastie Boys
Before Eminem, there were the Beastie Boys—the original white rap pioneers. Hailing from New York City, the Beastie Boys rose to prominence in the 1980s with their eclectic blend of punk rock and hip-hop. Tracks like "Fight for Your Right" and "Sabotage" not only topped the charts but also helped to break down racial barriers in the music industry, paving the way for future generations of white rappers.
The New Wave: Modern-Day White Rappers
Machine Gun Kelly
With his rebellious spirit and unapologetic attitude, Machine Gun Kelly has emerged as one of the most exciting voices in modern hip-hop. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Machine Gun Kelly burst onto the scene in the early 2010s with his electrifying mixtapes and high-energy performances. Tracks like "Wild Boy" and "Bad Things" showcase his versatility as an artist, blending rap, rock, and pop influences to create a sound that's uniquely his own.
Post Malone
While Post Malone may not fit the traditional image of a rapper, there's no denying his impact on the genre. With his melodic flow and genre-bending sound, Post Malone has captivated audiences around the world, earning accolades and awards for his chart-topping hits. From "White Iverson" to "Rockstar," Post Malone's music defies categorization, transcending boundaries and bringing people together in celebration of good vibes and great tunes.
Conclusion: Embracing Diversity in Hip-Hop
In a genre as diverse and dynamic as hip-hop, there's room for artists of all backgrounds and identities to thrive. While white rappers may have faced challenges and obstacles along the way, their contributions to the culture cannot be denied. From the pioneers who paved the way to the modern-day trailblazers who continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, white rappers have left an indelible mark on the hip-hop landscape, enriching the genre with their unique perspectives and experiences.
youtube
So the next time you find yourself nodding your head to the beat of a white rapper's track, take a moment to appreciate the artistry and talent that went into creating it. After all, in the world of hip-hop, diversity is not just a buzzword—it's a celebration of the rich tapestry of human experience, woven together by the universal language of music.

Mitsuoka Motors aims to be unique in the Japanese automobile industry, and the original cars that it sells nationwide are produced at its own development factory in Toyama Prefecture.
Rather than pursuing only the performance and convenience of automobiles, we took on the challenge of thinking outside the box and thinking outside the box, resulting in the birth of the first-generation Bute in 1993. It became a pioneer of fashion cars with an emphasis on design and a sense of fun, gaining the support of customers who seek individuality, fashion, luxury, commitment, and rarity in their cars, and in 2010 Cumulative production has reached 10,000 units, and it continues to be loved even today.
In 1994, we launched the Zero One, a sports car with an in-house chassis that made even more dreams come true. In Japan, it became the ``10th passenger car manufacturer'' after Honda, and received the ``Nihon Keizai Shimbun Regional Revitalization Contribution Company Award'', the ``Japan Fashion Association Lifestyle Culture Award'', and the ``Ministry of International Trade and Industry Award''. It was also selected as a Good Design Product (currently by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). In 2001, we exhibited for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show and announced the ``Orochi''. It has gained a lot of attention not only in Japan but also overseas. In 2006, the long-awaited ``Orochi'' was released to meet high expectations. Won the sports car category award in the ``2006-2007 Car of the Year''. It was selected as a special award winner in the ``Car View Car of the Year 2006-2007''.
We want to create cars that are playful, free, and genuinely captivating.
This is our dream for cars.
Instead of mass-produced cars using machines, we put our heart and soul into each car.
In pursuit of an original design, our cars have body shapes that are unsuitable for mass production, and all processes such as steel tapping, welding, FRP molding, and body joining are done by hand.
The car that was born in this way is a rare and tasteful car created with the excellent skill and sensibility of the workshop craftsmen.
If you find a pair of shoes you like, and if you share our sensibilities, we will create a pair just for you, one by one, made by craftsmen in our workshop with the utmost care, just like the bags and shoes of European and American brands make.
More fun cars, cars with more dreams.
Our car manufacturing is still a dream come true.

What Is So Special About The Dance Drama Wing Chun (詠春) As An Art Furore ? Will The Competition From Shenzhen Force Hong Kong To Do Our Cultural Best?
In the Western world, martial art is the art of motion. For the Chinese, martial art is more than that. It is a master’s philosophy and use of his body to accomplish visual art result.
Success is no accident. Many in the art world just want to follow success and not create it. Great stage works never come from comfort zones. The real risk facing the performing art circles in Hong Kong is the lack of enough top-notch breakthroughs and talented persons, apart from the usual problem: insufficient financial resources to make a big dream possible.
The world has changed. Home cinema, home video game and home audio are the kinds of ‘home entertainment’, because of their instantly accessible enjoyment, are replacing the traditional places like theatres, movie houses and concert halls. Determining what play or dance to go to watch in a theatre can be exorbitant these days, especially when you have to take into account travelling expenses, parking and dinner, apart from the expensive tickets. Making the overall trip ‘worth it’ obviously favours the large budget stage productions these days.
For the above reasons, the new dance drama Wing Chun (詠春), produced by the young city of Shenzhen (深圳) in China, has been extremely popular in the country for more than a year since 2023. The show went to Asian cities. Some said, “What a grand show! Almost 80 dancers perform on stage!” Some said, “The electrifying movements and gravity-defying choreography performed by the dancers create a visual spectacle that keeps us glued to the stage!” Some said, “The variety of striking scenes is another thing that makes me excited. Nobody performs ordinarily!” Some said, “The dancers, male or female, are good-looking, powerful and extremely stunning! They express their performing passion glamorously!”
The story of Ip Man (葉問) who created the famous martial art of Wing Chun (詠春) is well-known among the Chinese. Ip man was born in 1893 and died in 1972. He developed the great martial art of Wing Chun when he was 20. He had a famous legendary student Bruce Lee (李小龍). After the Second World War, Ip left Foshan (佛山) for Hong Kong. The dance performance was chiefly about how he was struggling for a living in Hong Kong, bullied by the gangsters, training his students, sparring with other martial art masters and deserted by his loved wife. His life has an unbroken line of unusual events and emotions, resulting in a successful and yet regretful life.
The production is high-quality but a bit expected. It is said that the investment was fuelled by the Shenzhen government. The stage design, lighting, audiovisual engineering, music and costumes offer their best, though the show are somehow not good enough if it wants to be at the top of other top dances. The truly excellent ones in this case are the dancers. The physically captivating dancers have no stuntman. I can feel that they sometimes risk their bodies to complete dangerous movements. These marvellous performers make the show absurdly beautiful because it is the most rigorous job for a dancer to be equally capable of the best martial art skills at the same time.
The southern island of Baoan (寶安) County became the British Hong Kong after the Opium Wars more than 100 years ago, while the primitive small village of Shenzhen was ignored on the border. In 1979, Shenzhen was suddenly made an Economic Zone for the ambitious economic developments of China. After about 40 years, the young au courant city managed to produce this art show that shocks the Asian art world. Hong Kong has a much longer cultural history and up to now, there has been no such comparable achievement. We should feel downcast by the scale of the threat that we see from this pioneering city neighbour.
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong announced in 2023 that Hong Kong, with the government’s help, will be able to produce big stage shows for large-scale long runs or re-runs. The ‘Signature Performing Arts Programme’ will provide a subsidy of up to Hong Kong $10 million, a matching funding of up to $5 million to match private sector funding and venue support so that these Hong Kong performances can become world-class art productions and the international cultural brand that can represent Hong Kong. This is surely a piece of exciting news. But, the local performing art sectors are too used to government’s money as their major source of funding. How to make profits is right now a big lesson for the local art groups to learn. Money can be a good reason for success. They must realize that there are 10,000 ways that make things not work. Complacency, inertia and lack of business sense are the imminent hurdles that they must overcome.
We all do better when we can gather the most talented people from a larger pool to work together. The population of Hong Kong is just about 7 million. That of Chinese mainland is around 1.41 billion. A top-class performing art team must be made of many gifted artists, from front and back stage. It is almost a necessity that in order to accomplish the ‘signature stage projects’ of Hong Kong, we cannot work alone or simply let a few big stage groups determine the scene. Joint productions of Hong Kong and Chinese mainland will be the sensible path, and I am sure we can find and manage a right path. It is going to take some time, though. Flexibility is the art of creating way outs within the cul-de-sac, as a Turkish playwright pointed out.
