ah, but the issue is, what exactly do I go to? I have a dozen or so characters I crave to unleash upon this earth, yet can't due to spoilers for the fanfic I'm working on with @brynthatalien (check out Fangs and Diamonds here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/54031597/chapters/136782559)

However, I do have an entire fan species, all contained within a 60+ page google doc, that I'm certain someone out there is interested in hearing about.........................................

THE MAURIANS!!!! A Star Trek fan species that is so utterly complex that not even I know what I'm doing yet has so little to be seen about them. I can't believe they're over a year old now, my old goofs.

Anywho! Yes! The Maurian race! A stupidly complex species that I ever so dearly love. When I first made the species, I was thinking "oh yeah i just wanna create some guy that looks like he could be a background character for Star Trek: Deep Space 9 nothing big" but ohhh boy was I wrong

This boy right here is Regius. I was originally not even certain if he was gonna be his own species and nearly considered just making him some Cardassian-Klingon hybrid (thankfully I deferred the latter). I had started watching Star Trek by beginning with DS9 (I continue to struggle to watch any other series within Star Trek. I am so sorry TOS, TNG, and VOY), so I really didn't know all that much of what I was doing, like various rankings and what not (I don't know why I pointed that out, but there we go).

ANYWAY!!!!!! Maurians are so far from canon that they don't know where canon is anymore. They have an entire political system, religious beliefs, social hierarchy, biology, and lot more... a lot of it I don't have visuals for, but I will try to explain the best I can.

Maurians are a primarily matriarchal species, having women lead in most subjects with men portrayed in lower rankings. According to their religious system, the Relics of Oma (Maurian heaven), this is due Iyra, the Maurian Goddess of Creation, creating women before men.

(below is Iyra in the center. most recent art of her I can find as of like seven or eight months ago, unfortunately)

There's like three political parties that you could probably piece together pretty easily, those being:

Traditionalists (stemming from the word traditional) (belief in matriarchy and religion)

Intercists (stemming from the word intercede) (gray area. just about anything between Traditionalists and Contemporists) (alternatively may be insultingly referred to as Intermediaries by either side)

Contemporists (stemming from the word contemporary) (literally just about anything against Traditionalists. Can go from wanting men to be seen as equals to as wild as just wanting the destruction of Maurian culture)

Traditional ideas have been going on for basically since Beginning of Creation, so about 5100 years for them, while modern contemporary ideas have only recently become popular within the past 200 years. Intercists are... a bit more difficult to pinpoint, but I'd say those ideas came about around the same time as modern Contemporists.

Now, if you've been looking at any of the Maurian designs shown so far, you've probably noticed those three spikes on their foreheads. Those are traditionally known as a tsyea, or tri-crown, if you want to be contemporary. The word tsyea translates in Maurian as "Holy Promise," as a, believe it or not, promise from the Maurians to the gods that they would never betray them. Contemporists kinda are weird about this, and extremists will often surgically removed them. I cannot disclose what my main oc, Lekel, in Fangs and Diamonds is, but you can probably piece it together from here:

Strangely, surgical removal of these forehead spikes often leaves them in having pain when touching where they were. Though dermal regenerators can easily heal the scar, pain will still occur. Most Traditionalists use this as evidence to point towards their gods as existing.

Maurian biology is... a lot. There's a lot of random stuff that even I forget sometimes, but that's why it's all written down!!! But I'll just share what makes Maurians unique in this aspect :]

The species often undergoes raoldum, a shedding process that occurs a few times a year in healthy, adult Maurians. It lasts normally about two weeks long and often leads to members being itchy and irritable. There are thankfully ways to make it go by faster, but not everyone has easy access to these due to current ah- lack-of-a-planet problems that'll be specified later. Easiest way to get through it is by just eating better and scratching at those stupid scales. Raoldum may occur more frequently in adults with ticks, diseases, or just scratching at an area for too long.

Maurians have improved hearing and night vision, but they lack certain smell glands that allow them to smell chemicals (such as hand sanitizer or perfume) which results in having a below average sense of taste. To counteract the taste factor, most of them will often smell their food before eating in order to taste it better.

Now, for those lack-of-a-homeworld issues... Twenty-two years ago their homeworld, Maurai, suddenly was overwhelmed by a plague known as Moorbor (Maurian killer). It specifically targeted Maurians and left non-members of the species asymptomatic. The species was at the time led by a Traditionalist who insisted on staying, while other political leaders (such as Contemporists and Intercists) argued against it. Unfortunately, with a failure of a plan, many Maurians died, wiping the population to a mere 550,000 members, a significant decrease from its previous several billions. Its unknown as of yet where the disease originated from, but its largely blamed to come from a river known as Dekborma (Killer River) (formerly known as Grahfma, meaning Desert River) that ran through one of Maurai's desert regions.

The Maurian species is highly displaced as of now, some heading towards Federation colonies (despite Maurians never joining the Federation for various reasons), others settling in newly made Maurian colonies (generally known as the Foreign Regions of Maurai). The most popular, however, is one of the few Maurian space stations, known as Ejna Kolor (directly translated as Life New, English translation being New Life), which was previously a trading outpost funded by extreme Traditionalists to keep aliens off of Maurai.

When Maurai was around, its economy highly relied on tourism, services, and trading materials unique to the area. Its climate was fairly warm and was known for its rainforest and mountainous biomes, although it had its fair share of desert areas, tundras/taigas, and prairies. It was generally a pleasant place to be for tourists and the such!!
