“This thing“
Name: Hama is good, I feel like. Star Sign: Virgo, aka the one you can’t make visually interesting no matter what you try. Gender: no Height: less than two meters, more than one and a half Orientation: facing this screen right now Favourite colour: bright yellows, moss green Time right now: not midnight yet Current location: Funland, 100 years of independence Average hours of sleep: way too many last night Lucky number: nah Last thing I googled: what moss green looks like Number of blankets I sleep under: a single duvet Favourite fictional character: I have an entire unanswered meme dating back a couple of years dedicated solely to this question. Let’s say Eva Ushiromiya, for now.
Oh who am I kidding. The answer is, and will always be, Kazuki Makabe. Favourite book: The Ancillary trilogy comes the closest currently. Favourite artists/bands: Sheena Ringo is a long-staying one. I’m bad at picking favorite artists, I usually enjoy songs as individual pieces of art. Dream job: Regular money and humane working conditions and guaranteed medical care and human contact less than 100% of the time. I like doing translations, but not on a “life’s calling“ level. What I’m wearing: two pairs of socks and a dapper shirt with buttons done the male side way, I’m told. The shirt came with a skirt, though, originally, so who knows. Random Fact: Siberian jays and western jackdaws are both around the size of a pigeon. Siberian jays are twice as big as sparrows. When did you create your blog: I think Star Driver was airing. Do you have other blogs?: On tumblr? There’s the rereblogblog blog. What made you get a tumblr: All the cool kids were doing it. And I wanted the URL before it was taken. Posting t&b made me stay, though, I guess. Do you get asks on a daily basis?: I don’t even remember the last time I got one. Why did you choose your url?: woo hamaon, pretty scary I was tagged by: @essentialprocrastination like, two-three years ago I tag: @cozminen @turalyon @hiiritan @firebraider @totallynotanerdyguy @jogeblr @my-pussy-tastes-like-pepsicola @mairenn-k @s-e-e-b-e-e (!! will you?) @nematadashi look I just grabbed some names, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.

Kathmandu, where life is easy
I’ve been living in Pepsicola, in Kathmandu, for three weeks now and wow I’ve settled in easily!
Before coming here, as I’ve said before, I had few plans and little idea of what life in Kathmandu would be like. I knew I’d be wanting to take advantage of all of the Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the area, but I was happy to let things happen and play with whatever karma threw at me once I arrived.
I’ve been busy, but overall life in Kathmandu has been pretty easy on me so far.
Week one was all about getting into a new routine ...
Most mornings start late here, with family breakfast in the kitchen at around 9:30 before we wander lazily upstairs to our office on the roof. We work, chat, drink tea, and often pop out for work-related errands before coming back and working some more until it gets dark. Dinner is again a nice family affair with our Nepali hosts chatting away and telling us stories about growing up in a village, getting a first cellphone in Nepal, experiences with work and study, and the dire state of Nepali politics!
Food at home is simple: our daily meals are almost always dal bhat, the Nepali national dish of lentil soup, vegetable curry, and rice. It’s basic, but so good. I’m finding already that when I’m away for a day or two I look forward to coming home to Sanu’s warm, comforting dal bhat for dinner.
As part of my work for Volunteer Society Nepal, I’ve been working with another expat to organise regular gatherings for the volunteers we have here in Pepsicola. This has got to be one of the perks of the job - coordinating bar hangouts, momo making parties, gallery visits, and sports events!
Week two was all about training and fundraising ...
Last weekend I totally surprised myself by doing something I’ve never done before - I ran a 10K race! I found out about it only a week before the event, said an optimistic “I think I can do that” (despite having never even run 5K) and started running around the Pepsicola football field in the evenings to train.
I only started running semi-regularly a couple of years ago when I was in Lhasa, and have never been a competitive runner, but I was so proud of myself for completing the Kathmandu Pinkathon 10K run in only 60 minutes :-) Plus - bonus points - I raised money for the local Women’s Centre here in Pepsicola while I was doing it! (P.S. Our campaign is still ongoing if you missed it and would like to add a donation!).
Miraculously, I didn’t wreck myself on the run and actually felt pretty good and strong after it. Strong enough to head off to Pashupatinath Temple that afternoon for its biggest festival of the year - Shivaratri.
Week three was all about festivals and culture ...
Shivaratri is the day to celebrate Shiva’s birth, and apparently also the day to get totally baked. I was told that apparently it’s the only day of the year when it’s legal to buy/sell/smoke weed in Nepal, because Shiva did it so why can’t we?
Pashupatinath was packed with thousands of men and a handful of women, pushing and pulling each other like a tide through the crumbling stone structures of the temple. Sadhus stood above the crowd in all their long-dreadlocked, brightly-painted glory, calling out praise to Shiva above and banter with the people below.
By the time we reached Pashupatinath in the late afternoon many of the Sadhus were already passed out in the sunshine, while others kept the crowd entertained by taking their clothes off and launching themselves naked onto people. Brave young men taunted the naked Sadhus, daring each other to be the ones standing at the front when the crazy holy man chose his next victim.
The next day I headed off to Boudha before dawn to spend the next three days at a VERY different type of festival - the Tibetan end of year and new year celebrations!
Losar is one of my favourite times of year - the food, the clothing, the ceremonies - it’s an awesome cultural experience to be immersed in.
In the early morning and late evening, the pilgrim circuit around the Boudhanath Stupa was packed with Tibetans mumbling their mantras and counting their prayer beads. I felt exactly like I was back in Lhasa again, back in the Barkhor in the heart of Tibet. The energy and atmosphere were exactly the same, and more than once I had to remind myself where I really was (but it was nice to daydream anyway).
I felt at home again, at peace in that environment. For three days I walked the kora, did prostrations, visited monasteries, made offerings, received blessings from Rinpoches, and practiced meditations. I welcomed in the Tibetan New Year of the Fire Bird with peace and happiness, plus a little longing for Lhasa.
On Wednesday again I returned to Boudha for a special performance of the Tibetan Opera “Prince Norsang”, which I’d seen for the first time a couple of years ago in Lhasa’s Norbulinka during Shoton Festival. The show was great, and once again transported me back to Tibet.
Week four begins now, and what will I be doing?
Who knows yet! Rolling from day to day without many plans, just living in the present has been working out well for me so far.
I know one thing for sure - I’ve got hundreds of photos that I need to start sharing on here from all these festivals! I’ll be making that a priority this week, so get ready for some awesome shots of Kathmandu, Shivaratri, Losar, and Boudha in the coming days :-)
Happy Tibetan New Year! Losar Tashi Delek!

Today, more than half of Japanese people carry smartphones.1 As a result, consumer behavior has forever changed. When consumers want to know, do, buy, or go, they turn to their phones and expect brands to provide immediate answers. At Google, we call these micro moments: crucial moments in which decisions are made and preferences are shaped. Many of these micro moments happen on mobile. According to Google research, 49% of Japanese consumers take search results into consideration when making purchase decisions.2 For initial searches, consumers use mobile more than any other device;3 and 40% of consumers say they’ve used a mobile device to compare products.2 Car Sensor, a used car information service, and its operator, Recruit Marketing Partners, saw the opportunity to embrace micro moments and followed three steps: 1. Identify consumers’ micro moments Recruit Marketing Partners knew that consumers looking to purchase cars have many I want to know and I want to buy moments throughout their journeys. In fact, 70% of searches for popular vehicle models are made from a smartphone.4 Research conducted by Recruit Marketing Partners also revealed that people’s tendency to look for information on their smart phones and mobile apps is likely to increase. Knowing this, the company invested in its mobile app with the goal of increasing conversions and winning loyal users. 2. Deliver the right information at the right time To make its mobile app convenient and helpful to car buyers, Recruit Marketing Partners took two approaches. First, it outfitted the mobile app with deep links. Users who had already installed the app would see a link to a specific section of the app when searching for vehicle images on Google. This made it possible for users to navigate to the corresponding image of the vehicle model in the mobile app with just one click. Second, the company displayed ads tailored to each user by leveraging its in app behavior log. It could show the most relevant creative content to each user based on brand and price preferences. 3. Measure the results Since searches and conversions within the mobile app may occur several months after its installation, Recruit Marketing Partners determined ROI based on Life Time Value CPA (LTVCPA), which considers a six month period from the time of installation instead of just relying on the app's CPI. As a result of the company’s efforts, the number of conversions from the mobile app has gradually risen and now accounts for roughly 15% of total conversions. As they move forward, Car Sensor and Recruit Marketing Services are going to continue delivering on consumers’ micro moments. Recruit Marketing Partners’ Operating Office of Internet Business, Sakurai Kohei said, "In the future, I want to focus on the idea of micro moments that Google advocates. When we conducted ethnographic research through a different medium to closely analyze the behavior of a large number of consumers, we found a certain amount of mobile usage during those in between moments, like when waiting for an elevator. I think it will become more important in the future to understand and respond to the specific behavior of consumers."
 Answer the following question.
Q1. What are micro moments? Explain
Q2. Give the advantages of embracing micro moments in mobile app for the loyal consumers.

YouTube.com was a video sharing Web site where users could upload, share and watch videos for free. In less than 2 years of its existence, YouTube ranked amongst the Web's top 50 sites and had 16 million daily viewers. By August 2006, it had the highest market share in the free video sharing Web site category. YouTube had introduced two new advertising avenues named 'Brand Channels' and 'Participatory Video Ads' to en cash its huge audience base and soaring popularity. But at the same time, YouTube's success story seemed to be eclipsed by allegations of copyright violations for the non permissible
content posted on its Web site. YouTube also faced a challenge to maintain its rapid paced growth and competition from other emerging me too kind of startups. In October 2006, Google announced the acquisition of YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock for transaction. Would YouTube be able to derive benefit from its association with the global reach and technology leadership of Google or get further entangled in lawsuits after being acquired by a cash rich technology giant?
 Answer the following question.
Q1. Explain the business model and functioning of YouTube.
Q2. Examine the critical success factors for YouTube as a company.
Q3. Debate the marketing strategies of YouTube.

Namaste from 34 degrees and power cut
July 16th 2073 (Nepali time).
I really enjoyed my time in Pepsicola. I lived with a great host family (and their washing machine). We had a lot of mito chha food and learned more about the nepali culture and especially the caste system, which is really interesting.
Sunday we (Sara and I) said our goodbyes both to our host family, and also to the 15 other engineering students who are all now scattered out in Nepal working at different hospitals. We are in Bharatpur together with Umesh, a Nepali electrician from Janakpur, working at the local district hospital and had our first work day Monday the 11th.
The hospital is nothing like I expected. Bharatpur District Hospital is the largest district hospital in Nepal and also one of the busiest hospitals. Since it’s a district hospital it is only visited by the poorest people in the area. The typical occupancy rate is 120% and the daily out-patient number is around 1500-2000.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have been working there for a week now and it is extremely challenging (without overestimating it). I was expecting bad conditions, but I would never be able to imagine these conditions. Hygiene is not a priority. It’s been difficult to find a spot to wash my hands and I have not yet seen alcohol dispensers for disinfection. There is garbage and stray dogs everywhere. There are not enough beds in many parts of the hospital and seeing especially pregnant woman lying on the ground, in the maternity department, a few hours from giving birth has been difficult. They lie on few mm thick mattresses rubbing their stomachs and there is nothing we can do about it, which is really frustrating. The hygiene we want to help with. Setting up alcohol dispensers is not a problem, but we need people who can fill them up when we are not there, so now we are trying to make friends with the staff, especially the nurses.
Tumblr media
In Nepal they work 7 hours a day 6 times a week so saturdays are our only days off. This precious day we spent sightseeing in Devghat with Patrick and Jon, two of the other volunteers. In Devghat we saw the junction between two of the major rivers in Nepal, which is a religious place in Hinduism. It was nice getting away from the city and the noise.
The hospital is definitely going to be a great challenge, but I really believe that we can make a difference. I look forward to the next three weeks which I know will be filled with a lot of frustration and hard work, but hopefully also a lot of fixed equipment.
/Hilal
