DPXDC Prompt #61 part 1
Danny didn’t like thinking about his old life. He was born to a family of assassins and as soon as he was out he never looked back. He had to fake his death and he changed his name, as far as anyone knew Damian Al Ghul had died on a mission to America. He was determined to keep this secret to the grave. Of course he knew who his dad was, Bruce Wayne was a prominent figure and he knew if we went there his secret would get out and he never wanted to be forced to be an assassin again. Once was enough.
Danny knew he had a soft heart, his adoptive parents, the Fentons and Jazz had told him so. Jazz knew he didn’t have the greatest childhood or past but she never pried, she understood his business was his and wouldn’t let her own curiosity get the better of her. The only issue their family had was their parents obsession with ghosts. Damian never believed in ghosts, the entire thing sounded like a hoax. He probably never would have believed in them but then life happened.
Danny believed, but it was kind of hard not too after everything that happened. When he had turned 14, his parents finished their biggest project yet. A portal to the ghost zone, of course it doesn’t work at first and his parents were very disappointed. Danny felt conflicted about the whole thing. On one hand he wanted his parents to succeed and he wanted them to be happy, on the other the portal was the reason he ate alone with his sister at night. He wanted a normal family life, something he was never allowed back at the league.
He did something so stupid that night.
After his parents along with his sister were asleep, he crept down to the basement and stood in front of the empty hole in the wall. He looked around the outside of it first but nothing seemed to be out of place. Then he stepped into it and before he got too far into it something happened. He knew there were a lot of cords on the floor and thought he had avoided them all, but as he realized he was quickly being acquainted with the floor, he out of instinct held his hand out to catch himself on the wall. Right onto the ON button.
He didn’t remember much but pain after that.
A lot happened in the year after the portal was turned on but Danny thought he was taking things well. His sister found out about everything sooner than he liked but having someone to help him was something he didn’t realize he really needed until then. The ghost attacks were frequent and Danny was having trouble finding the time for school, friends, and fighting ghosts that the assistance helped a lot.
Danny sat at as desk in Mr. Lancers class, who was going on about the play Hamlet. Danny was only half paying attention, he was preoccupied thinking about the latest conversation he had with Clockwork. Danny was recently crowned prince after his victory over Pariah Dark. He didn’t want the crown, ancients knew what Grandfather would do if he ever found out, but he had no other option but to accept. The conversation left him rather drained and it felt like every word his teacher spoke bled together.
He eventually made his way to lunch and before he could make it to his destination a blue mist wafted out of his mouth. Sighing he ran out of the room to find a place to transform. Once he was Phantom he wasted no time finding the ghost. Of course it was Boxie.
Before he had time to even fight though a portal opened up right besides Danny and he was kicked in by the Box Ghost. The world seemed to swirl around him until he landed harshly onto some pavement. The pavement was a roof and he appeared to be in a city.
Not just any city he soon realized as he looked over to a bank that had the words ‘Gotham Bank’ brightly plastered on the front.
Shit… Danny wanted to avoid something like this, unfortunately the portal was already gone.
After taking a moment to think about his predicament he decided the best course of action was to call Jazz.
He took a look around the rooftop he was on and when he didn’t see anyone he transformed back.
Pulling out his cell from his pocket he pulled up his sister's contact on it and hit the call button.
His sister took a bit longer than usual to answer but the hesitation in her voice caused him to pause, “H-hello?”
“Jazz, it’s Danny, we’ve got a code green,”  he knew setting up code colors with his sister would come in handy. Red meant he was gravely injured, yellow meant the ghost got away and he was in pursuit, blue meant he caught the ghost, and green meant he fell through a portal or something similar.
There was silence on the other line for a moment and Danny was almost going to say something else but she spoke, “How do you know my name?”

When Jazz had first gotten back from her week-long summer camp for gifted children, she’d expected an empty fridge and a sink full of dirty dishes and a living room that would desperately need to be vacuumed. She had expected the empty driveway and the overgrown lawn and the fresh new graffiti that tagged the side of their mailbox in neon green paint and crude, mocking words.
Most of all, she had expected her little brother to be there at the front door when she knocked. She’d expected it to swing wide open before she could even set down her belongings and fish out her own set of keys. She’d expected her baby brother to be standing there to greet her, clad in socks that had worn thin across the heel and had holes where his big toe stuck out, with hair that hadn’t been brushed in a week and still wearing clothes he’d slept in the night before.
What she hadn’t expected was the pungent, metallic odour that hung in the air. Stale and sour, overwhelming her every sense as she stepped past the threshold - suffocating what little oxygen not yet taken up by the foul stench of burning flesh and hair.
She hadn’t expected the strong, chemical smell that wafted from the second storey of the house.
Or the bloody footprints leading up the basement stairs.
Or the dark, patchy stains sinking into the living room rug.
Or her brother’s friends to come racing from the back of the house with wide, watery eyes and ashen faces, tripping over gallon bottles of bleach and haphazardly strewn cleaning supplies.
But most of all, she hadn’t expected to find her little brother, rumpled and glassy-eyed, staring into the swirling green light of her parent’s latest failed invention.

Asleep In The Keep: A DP x BNHA fic
Summary: After the fight with Pariah Dark, Danny succumbs to his injuries and dies in his friend's arms. He is able to rest knowing they are safe… Until he wakes up in the Keep. Danny flees to a portal, and it leads him into a world of heroes and quirks. In a world where everyone has powers, it would make sense that Danny would be accepted…Right?
Word count: 1331
Chapter 1: Nightly Night
1/?
Danny was dead tired. He couldn't feel his legs. Oh, it was just his spectral tail. Forming legs took too much out of him. The fight with Pariah Dark was unlike any he had with other ghosts, Danny knew it would be. Fortunately, he and the ghost hunters (his parents included) formed a truce. They cleared the massive army of the dead, and he dealt with Pariah. It was a risky strategy that couldn’t even be called a plan.
Before the fight, Clockwork appeared to him. Danny had to be the one and only one to defeat Pariah, otherwise, he will come back. Sam and Tucker were always there with him when the ghosts attacked, although over the course of 3 years, their compact support turned to moral and medical support. There wasn't much humans could do against ghosts. So, at the entrance of the Keep, he locked them out. Despite them being human, they weren’t able to enter the castle. It was like the Ghost Zone itself bent the rules for the fight.
Danny floated over the sarcophagus that sealed Pariah. His hands shook as he steadied himself down to rest on the cold floor, his back leaning against the coffin. Pariah had shot a giant hole through his torso, just under the ribs, and despite the abundance of ectoplasm in the air, it wasn’t closing. He held the wound with shaking hands trying to keep it all in, but he could feel it slowly leak out of him like cold tar between the gaps.
He lost too much blood and ectoplasm.
Outside he heard cheering.
Or maybe it was just his ears ringing.
Danny thinks he beat his record for longest ghostly wail.
He tried to stand up again, but it was like he was hit by a meteor. Worse maybe. Danny thinks he might be able to walk that off after all the hits he took from the ghosts. He laughed mirthlessly at himself. That shouldn’t be funny.
More and more blood and ectoplasm seeped out of him and covered the floor like a crude picnic blanket. Blood and ectoplasm mixed like oil and water, and so the floor looked like a modern work of art exploring contrasting colors. It glowed faintly.
He was going to die. Somehow Danny knew that his time was up. Maybe he only came back as a ghost to defeat Pariah, and now that it was done, the Ghost Zone wouldn’t need him anymore and just finish the process.
How much different would it really be? Danny had been dead for 3 years now, this would just make it official. Would his parents even know what happened to him? Would they blame the ghosts? Would they blame Phantom? Phantom will no longer be there and neither will Danny. Will they be able to put the two and two together? Danny doubted it.
He let out a faux breath but quickly regretted it as it pulled on his insides. He was starting to go dizzy with the pain. He no longer cared what happened to him. Everyone was safe, that's all that mattered…
He heard the clanking of metal and splashes ring out in the room. It got closer and he was able to pick up voices he recognized. He couldn’t understand what they were saying, or even who was who, but they were desperate and shrill. They sounded like the kids they were.
Danny didn’t want them there, didn’t want them to see him like this. He tried to raise a hand up, to push them away, but it pulled the wrong way and he winced.
His eyes were unfocused, and he was only able to see the dark outlines of them hovering over him. He felt claustrophobic and his insides squirmed more.
He could feel hands pulling into his body, but his body weaved like smoke through their fingers. Despite what he told Tucker and Sam, staying tangible takes a lot of energy, only the more powerful ones could maintain it for so long (he didn’t want to think what that meant for him). It didn’t matter now. Everything was far away and he felt like he was floating down a river.
He could feel them still reaching through him. They left warm imprints in him where they tried to pull him up. It felt nice.
“He’s never been this bad before...” it rang out louder than the others, and he was able to tell it was Jazz. She shouldn’t be here for this.
Despite the pain, he tried once more to move away from them, but it was like a fish flailing on land. None of them should be here. He didn’t want these to be their final moments with him. He didn’t want this to be what he left behind. They should remember him as he was before the fight, when he smiled when he went to face the King alone. All that was left was a broken shell they had no hope of fixing. He closed his eyes, trying to pretend they weren’t there.
“...go away…” he pushed out with all the strength he had left. His side ignited in pain, but he continued, “...don’t..loo-'' he felt a warmth around his neck, and he relaxed into it.
“Why are you so stupid?” His sister called out, “You knew this was going to happen, didn’t you?” more warmth blanketed him. He suddenly realized they were holding him.
“We could’ve fought with you!'' said Tucker. “You didn’t have to do this alone!” Danny didn’t have the energy to fight back. It had to be him and him alone, otherwise Pariah wouldn’t be defeated, just subdued and a problem for later like before. He ended it.
“...go” Danny once again choked out.
“Like hell we’re gonna leave you!” Sam yelled “You always do this! You think just because you’re strong you can take on any threat by yourself!” She choked, “Well look at you now!” He could feel her gesture at him. “You’re so selfish…” he heard a soft slash on the ground, as if she hit it in frustration. “Why do you get to make the decision for us?” Her voice was softer now, “we promised to help you…What happened to ‘friends til the end’?” she broke down.
She was right. They all were. God, he was selfish, he had always been selfish. He shouldn’t have made the choice for them; he knew they would go with him; he always knew that. They had been there since the beginning, yet he still pushed them away. He was probably trying to avoid the situation they were in now. It was too late to go back, and even if clockwork allowed, he still didn’t regret his dissections. If they went with him, they would be deader than him.
His core buzzed as they held him. He loved them so much. He didn’t want to leave them yet, there’s so much they didn’t do, didn’t say. They haven’t even graduated high school yet. They must have known all this, that this would be the last time that they held him. He could hear all of them sobbing.
He started to cry too. He was glad they were there…
He didn’t want to die alone.
Danny could feel he was slipping fast. Their warmth was fading more and more as the seconds went by. He didn’t want his last words to be ‘go away’.
“...thank…” he muttered “...you.”
He couldn’t feel them anymore, but he knew they were there. He allowed himself to let everything go, he no longer had the strength to hold on anyway. He could go peacefully. Pariah Dark was defeated. Amity Park was safe. His friends wouldn’t die today. Everyone was going to be okay.
His form felt fuzzy and he started to melt, then he felt nothing at all.
His core sang as if it were saying, ‘job well done’.
He couldn’t have chosen any other way to go…

In the Danny is Damian’s brother trope what if instead of Damian not telling the family about Danny wasn’t because of grief or shame or any of the more commonly used reasons for his silence. What if it was because he heard about how his father talked about Jason after his death, focusing and exaggerating the negative. That he was violent, angry, never listened to orders but in some iterations and popular fanon is that Jason was a cheerful and studious Robin.
What if while compiling info and researching the former robins during his tumultuous introduction he saw what kind of robin Jason was, good with kids and victims. Talking about his favorite books while on patrol and similar. Reminding Damian of his most Beloved brother.
Then he finds out about how Bruce talked about Jason after he died. Using him as an example as what not to do, erasing his good traits and just using him as a cautionary tale of what happens when you don’t follow orders. Just like what Ra’s said about Danny.
So he didn’t tell the family, not out of guilt or grief. But because his father stripped away Jason’s positive traits after death, the son he chose, adopted and loved. Who when he failed because he was a child led astray by his mother. What would he do to his brother, who loved the stars and excelled in stealth, who was quite in his kills but had no lust for killing.
Whether or not Bruce would do this to Danny’s memory doesn’t matter. B’s actions are gonna affect how Damian views his father even years after the initial actions. Because Damian will protect his brothers memory from being twisted even by their father.

The Joker was apprehended, sitting on the ground as Batman guarded him, but the kid--"Bruce Wayne's newest ward, how tragic! Hehehe!"--was nowhere to be found. Nightwing and Red Hood desperate searched the warehouse until a shuffling noise grabbed their attention.
A kid, black haired just like the kid in the Joker's broadcast, crawling out of a pile of boxes. "Is it over?" the boy asked quietly.
Nightwing guided him to the only exit, unfortunately walking past the boy's own kidnapper. "Yeah, kid. It's over. Come on-"
Like a shot, the boy rushed the Joker and kicked him right in the balls.
The Joker wheezed like a dying squeaky toy. Red Hood froze. Nightwing immediately snatched the boy up by the armpits, but all that did was give the boy the height to attack again, punting Joker in the jaw. The clown went down and cracked his head on the floor. He did not get back up.
There was a moment of silence before Red Hood roared with laughter, his helmet distorting the sound.

The Summoner
So! Danny is not the Ghost King.
But he still has a good relationship with a LOT of Powerful and not-so-powerful Ghosts in the Zone. So much so that they have given him their Summoning Circle's with a blanket permission to Summon them any time. Not like they have much else going on...
This all leads to a hilarious situation where Danny can't use his Powers for whatever reason and is forced to Summon his friends for help. In front of a group of Heroes.
He has to explain everything to them, but accidentally convinces them that he has Summoning Magic and the Ghosts are all on his Contract. He also mentions Saving people from Ghosts and the JLA realize that he is a child Hero.
They ask him if he wants to join Young Justice, and Danny hesitantly agrees.
Now Danny is on Young Justice and the entire team thinks that he is a Hero with Ghost Summoning Magic.
And his name isn't Daniel "Commit to the Bit" Fenton for no reason.

The ring was small and silver with a single emerald embedded in the metal.
It wasn’t something flashy, it probably cost less than the smallest gem from his vault all together.
But it was perfect.
Which made it so heartbreaking to turn it down.
“Dick.. you know me so well.. I wish I could take this ring, i really do.”
Dick was still on one knee in the little apartment, but he put the small box down on the floor as he asked.
“Then what’s stopping you?”
Danny let out a bitter chuckle,
“The US government.”

I just think
It’d be really neat if Danny looked more like Martha Wayne than Thomas Wayne.
LIKE
I love the Danny Fenton looks like Thomas Wayne or Danny Fenton is Thomas Wayne reincarnated — but the BEAUTY of Martha??
Of Alfred interacting for under five minutes with Danny, dabbing his eyes and going, “That is indeed Martha,” I WANT IT. I want Martha who was spunky and sassy and wanted to do good for her town the same way Danny wants to do good for Amity Park.
I want Martha who loved to take Bruce and the family out to star gaze because her baby had never seen the stars before, and the way his eyes light up like a mini galaxy takes her breathe away the same way that Danny feels when he turns his head up to the sky yearning for something he knew loved but doesn’t know what.
I want Martha who would literally find trouble in a paper bag because she can’t help her curiosity the same way Danny can’t help tripping over his own ghostly tail and making a mess of things before he figures things out.
I want Martha who would fight men who thought they held power, going absolutely feral from stress the same way Danny does when he’s tired of not being able to do his homework or pick up a vacuum against the wall to clean because ghosts.
I want Martha who loved the pearl necklace that Bruce had picked out for her birthday, and Danny reaches towards his neck and startles when his fingers only touch skin when he is certain there was something supposed to be there. I want Danny whose eyes linger on whites and pearls when he passes by open window stores in the mall, fingers itching to flick a nail against the smooth surfaces.
I want Martha who died bleeding underneath the hand of a gun, hoping to everything above that her boy would be safe, and Danny whose body burns at merely looking at the makeshift guns his parents create in the lab, his heart pounding desperately with a yearning to save there was someone she wanted to save the ghosts.

Damian: [brushing his teeth]
The shadow hanging over his shoulder: [Gets its teeth dangerously close to Damian's shoulder]
Damian: [Shoves a toothbrush into said shadow move and starts brush]
The shadow: [Pauses before starting to let out a contented purr]
Damian then spits out the foam and washes out his mouth, then makes the shadow do the same and then picks out pjs.
Damian: [Currently decided if he should go with the cat, dog, or knife imprinted one]
The shadow: [Starts getting dangerously close to Damian with, toxic green spirals it calls eyes]
Damian: [Throws the dog imprinted one behind him at the shadow and takes the cat imprinted one for himself and tells the shadow to put it on]
The shadow: [Stares at the clothes before hesitantly putting them on before letting out a noise of distress]
Damian: [Turning around to find the shadow somehow stuck in the pjs, lets out a sigh, then starts to help them fit]
Damian then moves over to the bed, he points to one side and tells the shadow to go there. The shadow listens, laying down as Damian also lays down, grabbing the sheets and covering them both.
It barely took a few seconds for the shadow to fall asleep, and Damian stared at it. Damian wasn't quite sure why the shadow of his dead twin was following him, nor why it was even able to and seemed to hide itself from anyone who isn't Damian.
Nobody besides him knew about it, and Damian decided that he liked it. This could have been his younger brother, if the other had survived, and they would have probably been told to fight to the death to decide an heir.
At the very least, that won't ever happen.
Even if his brother was slightly unusual.
===
Danny did not remember much of the before, he remembered people with blurred faces and features, blurred colors. He remembered a lot of colors, then red, then white, then pain.
He doesn't like pain, he believes.
Then he remembered going to sleep, and then he woke up. It was dark and slimy and cramped when he woke up, especially when he realized someone else was in their with him.
Then he fell asleep again, then woke up to that same dark and slimy place, then fell asleep again, all in some weird cycle. Then, moving, and pain.
It hurt, and he was sluggish when it eventually stopped. Then came pain again, and he was asleep.
Then he woke up, again.
He didn't know what was happening, wasn't really aware of too. But he woke up next to the other who was in that dark and slimy with him, and decided he wanted to stay with them.
He wasn't aware enough for most of the things that happened when Damian grew up, but he still stayed regardless, and hide from everyone else.
Danny loves his brother, and he thinks his brother loves him too. Even if he was slightly unusual.

Witness Protection
There’s a dead guy in the alley and it’s not Danny.
Ok, technically there are two dead guys in the alley but honestly, Danny feels like they’re way past semantics.
Because, once again, there is a dead man in the alley.
Danny is fairly sure the guy’s been murdered. The bloody mess that is the guy's chest is a pretty good indicator, but the bloody knife that's still stuck in the guy’s guts is really what makes it for the teen.
Danny might be freaking out a little bit. Because, while he is used to dead people, they’re never this newly deceased, or for that matter, this gruesomely murdered.
Before his breath can quicken too much, Danny makes himself take a deep breath.
Say what you want about Danny, but he hasn’t spent his high-school career moonlighting as a teenage vigilante without learning a thing or two about staving off a panic attack. Feeling more calm, Danny focuses back on the issue at hand.
I should call the police, says something in the back of his head that sounds like Jazz.
If I call in the murder I’ll be on the suspect list, retorts some other part of his brain he’s choosing to call the Sam part.
No advice from an imaginary Tuck though. Even in his own mind he can’t imagine a Tucker that hasn’t already passed out cold at the sight of a dead guy.
Which, fair. Danny is kinda considering the option, as he’s feeling a little faint himself. It is way past time he got out of here. At least he's figured out just how to do it.
Anonymous tips are a wonderful thing, made all the more wonderful by the presence of payphones in Gotham.Danny is officially handing this off to the proper authorities.
Boy is he glad he doesn’t have to be involved anymore.
A few streets over, a hooded figure rounds a corner, their breath coming fast  as they clench their bloody fists agitadely. There wasn’t supposed to be anyone there, and yet. This is an unexpected setback.
The hooded figure leans back against the alley wall to catch their breath. Nothing to do about it but fix it. And as these things go, this is an easy mistake to fix. The face of the black-haired blue-eyed hurdle floats to the front of their mind.
It should be child’s play.

Original first chapter
This is the first chapter of Asleep In The Keep that I had posted to Ao3. It was originally 174 words. I did a massive rewrite of chapter 1-6 I think and I like it a lot better, but it's still fun to read the old stuff cause wow
~★~
Danny was dead tired. He couldn't feel his legs. Oh wait, that's just his spectral tail. The fight with Pariah Dark was hard. He lost so much blood and ectoplasm during the fight. He was tired. Shutting Pariah Dark into the sarcophagus spent the last bit of energy he had left.
Outside he heard cheering.
Or maybe it was just his ears ringing.
Danny thinks he beat his record for longest ghostly wail.
He could feel his form buzzing. Despite what he told Tucker and Sam, staying tangible takes a lot of energy. It didn’t matter now. He was so sleepy. Everything was far away and he felt like he was floating.
He could feel them reaching through him. They left warm imprints on where they tried to pull him up.
“He’s never been this bad before...”
He thought he heard one of them sobbing.
He could feel more warmth around him. It felt nice. None of them were hurt. Everything was gonna be okay. Danny just needed to sleep for a little bit…
~★~
I think I've gotten better at writing since then
Fun fact: the reason the fic is called “Asleep In The Keep” is because Danny was supposed to just be asleep in the keep and not dead in the keep. That was more clear in the earlier drafts (chap 2 and 3). I kept the name cause it rhymes and I’m not clever enough to come up with a new one

1/2
Danny had not planned on killing the Joker. He had been telling the truth when he said he didn’t want drama when he moved to Gotham. He just been going out to lunch with his new friends. It wasn’t his fault that the Joker showed up and started making a mess. It definitely wasn’t his fault. The Joker was stupid enough to weigh a gun at his friend, especially when Danny had been tinkering with a new self defense device. Now, everyone was looking at him in and the joker was a bubbling mess of goo on the ground. How was he supposed to explain this to Jazz?
Steph, Tim, and Duke had befriended a civilian who they were pretty sure is a rogue in the making. However, he was funny, smart, and cute enough to make both Duke and Tim blush. so, they were pretty attached to Danny.
They didn’t expect that taking Danny to lunch to introduce him to the rest of the family would end up like this.
At least Jason approves.

Alley Drunk! Danny AU- Pt. 4
[Pt.1] [Pt.2] [Pt.3]
Danny blinked down at the cart, where a red hoodie and pants with red stripes along the side laid over the lip of the cart. Considering they’re in this universe’s brand of Marget- seriously, who names a store Target? If anything in Amity Park was named that, Skulker would have wrecked it in five seconds flat- it’s hilariously on brand. Though, to be fair, this was Gotham’s version too, which meant a lot of security guards (who definitely doubled as goons for the Rogues, Danny was sure) and the vibes were spooky.
“I’m guessing red’s your favorite color.”
Instead of the humorous way he meant the sentence, Jason looked up anxiously and Danny immediately hated himself a little bit more.
“Sh- I can put it back..?” Jason hunched in on himself.
Danny tracked the movement with clearer eyes than he’s had in a long while and ancients, does it remind him of how Dani was in front of Vlad all those years ago. And Danny has spent his entire half life being not like Vlad, so he’s not going to start now.
“Nah, you should definitely add some more stuff. This is no where near enough clothes.”
It really wasn’t. Danny had taken Jason to the store to pick out clothes- “Ther’s a second hand store down the stree’, ya know,” Jason had mumbled when they went through the doors- but the kid had only tentatively put in a small red hoodie and some pants in the cart. Now he had to put this in a way that’ll wipe the stubbornly hesitant look on Jason’s face off.
“Think about it this way, then. You’re repping me now, and while I might be the alley drunk, I’m not the poorly dressed alley drunk, yeah?”
“Oh. Tha’ makes sense.” Jason nodded to himself determinedly, and the kid strode over to the t-shirt section. For all of his confidence, he still glanced back to see if it was okay with Danny.
Well, Dani was the same way before she found her confidence (when she knew Danny wouldn’t abandon her or hurt her) so Danny just gave him a thumbs up before reaching into the rack and sweeping an armful of clothing straight into the cart. Then, he strode over to the jackets and grabbed the ones in Jason’s size and slightly bigger. Oh, he has to grab shoes. He’ll leave that for later, but Danny was going to get those ratty trainers off of Jason’s feet and into the nearest trash can if it was the last thing he does.
The halfa hummed, pausing at the first decidedly not miserable sound he’s made in a while. Dammit, if that wasn’t a sign of Danny’s attachment to Jason, he doesn’t know what would be. To be fair… Danny already committed murder for the kid, which was pretty much something he thought he’d never do, so in for a penny out for a pound or whatever.
He put a significant amount of the budget aside for the section labeled “JASON” so Danny shopped without a worry. Charlie’s ill-gotten assets were a good monetary compensation for his crime of existing near Jason or existing, period.
He picked up toiletries, toothbrushes and the like, when Jason came back sans t-shirt. Instead of a shirt- Danny had actually hoped that Jason would try to get multiple shirts- Jason was clutching a book.
Before he could even voice anything, Danny plucked the book out of his grip and put it into the cart with a disarming smile.
“Oh, good idea. We should get you books too. Wanna go pick out some more?”
“Uh- y’re just gonna get a book, just like that?”
“More than one book, I should hope. You are going to school, right?”
“…Yeah!” Danny couldn’t fathom ever being excited at the thought of school, but as Jason bounced away to peruse the admittedly poor selection of books, Danny couldn’t help but think that maybe he should give this education thing another try. Who knows? Maybe it’ll be less stressful now that he’s not Phantom.
Danny walked to the aisle next to the books and promptly proceeded to shove every single piece of stationary he thought was nice- pens, gel pens, cooling pens and pencils, a thick stack of notebooks, flash cards, etcetera- into the rapidly getting full cart.
Jason came back with three more books- nice, the classics- and froze at the sight of the cart.
“Oh, hey. Getting all of those?”
“Wha’- wha’s wit’ the stuff?”
“School supplies! Quality education starts with quality supplies, you know!” Danny said, a sliver of the grin that used to come so easily to him making an appearance on his face. "Don't worry, I budgeted. See?"
Danny handed Jason a piece of paper, confident that the kid would know if it was good or not.
"Where'd... ya get all of this?"
"Hmm... here and there."
Jason looked up at him, squinting suspiciously. "I hear' Charlie's gone poofed up."
Danny shrugged and put a calculator in the cart. "Oh, I'm sure he's busy."
Yeah, Danny thought vindictively. Busy being dead.
"Ya sound like a walking con," Jason said as he visibly decided to give up fighting against Danny's spending. "We nee' food."
"Gotcha. Well, if you need anything else, just bring it into the cart."
"I want veggies. Frozen, 's cheaper."
Danny nodded, resisting the urge to ruffle Jason's hair.
----
"Hey, you's the Alley Drunk, right? 'Bout that boy you've been toting ar-"
Danny punched the guy in the face, dropping him like a stone. He looked up slowly and swayed.
"Any of you ask about my kid brother again, and I won't bother with being drunk when I hit you."
Rapid nods. Danny shuffled away, satisfied.
----
Two weeks later, after a school day, Danny finds Jason heading to the bathroom with a box of...
"Hair-dye?"
Jason, who was marginally more relaxed and assured that Danny wasn't going to kick him out, nodded.
"Dye's fadin' n' I dun wanna get nabbed on the streets for having red hair."
Danny blinked. "You have red hair?"
"Sure do. See? Roots are showin' again." Jason pointed at his scalp where Danny could see the hair was getting lighter.
"Right. Well- I'll leave you to it. Let me know if you need help, kiddo." Danny said, desperately hoping he hid how off kilter he was feeling well.
"I don't need help, ah've been doing this for ages." The kid went into the bathroom and closed the door harshly. When the lock clicked and the faucet began running, Danny let himself slide down the wall into a crouch, hands cradling his head.
Red hair. Blue eyes. Tan skin. The facial features. The intelligence and empathy.
Danny chuckled hysterically under his breath.
Was Jason this universe's version of Jazz?
"Fuck."
