I don't really subscribe to the idea of getting anniversary editions of books cause most of the time it's just gonna have a revamped ✨shinier✨ cover and nothing else, however I am very tempted to make an exception for 10th anniversary edition of the bone season because it seems like Samantha Shannon is actually editing the contents and I'm curious to see what she changes

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to another instalment of the Fandom project! This time, we are once again discussing books, this time, young adult books. Check out previous posts in this series here.
Once again, the list is quite long, so I will just mention the wiki and not go into deeper details about what each one needs help with. If I did that, the post would be too long, and no one would have time for it.
As I've mentioned in previous posts, if you can create & edit a Tumblr post, you can edit articles on a wiki. Here, you can find an easy step-by-step guide on how to get started with contributing, but you can also message me & I will help guide you through any question marks.
13 Treasures Series // A Walk to Remember // The Amateurs // The Archived // Artemis Fowl // Beautiful Disaster // Big Little Lies // The Bone Season // Books of History Chronicles // The Book Thief
Charlaine Harris // Chris Van Allsburg // Chronicles of Nick // Cornelia Funke // Covenant // Dan Brown // Daughter of Smoke and Bone // Destroyermen // The Devil Wears Prada // Diana Wynne Jones // Divergent // The Diviners Series

Laini Taylor Quote RP Meme
Tumblr media
ny times bestselling author most famous for the books daughter of smoke and bone and strange the dreamer- feel free to edit quotes or change pronouns for rp purposes
“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love.It did not end well.”
“Have you ever asked yourself, do monsters make war, or does war make monsters?”
“If you're afraid of your own dreams, you're welcome here in mine.”
“She moved like a poem and smiled like a sphinx.”
Inessential penises? Is there any such thing as an essential one?'
“Love is a luxury."
“Your soul sings to mine. My soul is yours, and it always will be, in any world. No matter what happens. I need you to remember that I love you.”
“Be sorry, then. Just be sorry somewhere else.”
“It’s the mind. It’s the most complex and astonishing thing there is, that there’s a world inside each of us that no one else can ever know or see or visit.”
“Peace is more than the absence of war. Peace is accord. Harmony.”
“You’re a storyteller. Dream up something wild and improbable. Something beautiful and full of monsters."
“It was interesting the way a small hate could grow inside a big hate and take it over.”
“I turned my nightmares into fireflies and caught them in a jar.”
“How much does your life have to suck to want the Apocalypse?”
“A dream dirty and bruised is better than no dream at all.”
“It was impossible, of course. But when did that ever stop any dreamer from dreaming.”
“I think you’re a fairy tale. I think you’re magical, and brave, and exquisite. And I hope you'll let me be in your story.”
“I am one of billions. I am stardust gathered fleetingly into form. I will be ungathered. The stardust will go on to be other things someday and I will be free.”
“With the infinite patience of one who has learned to live broken, he awaited her return.”
"Good people do all the things bad people do. It's just that when they do them, they call it justice.”
“Hey! My body may be small, but my soul is large. It’s why I wear platforms. So I can reach the top of my soul.”
“It is a condition of monsters that they do not perceive themselves as such. The dragon, you know, hunkered in the village devouring maidens, heard the townsfolk cry 'Monster!' and looked behind him.”
“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”
“Once upon a time, an angel lay dying in the mist. And a devil knelt over him and smiled.”
“He read while he walked. He read while he ate. The other librarians suspected he somehow read while he slept, or perhaps didn't sleep at all.”
“The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around”
“Stop squandering yourself, child. Wait for love.”
“People with secrets shouldn’t make enemies.People with destinies shouldn’t make plans.”
“Your heart is not wrong. Your heart is your strength. You don't have to be ashamed.”
“Once upon a time there was a silence that dreamed of becoming a song, and then I found you, and now everything is music.”
“Dead souls dream only of death. Small dreams for small men. It is life that expands to fill worlds. Life is your master, or death is”
“Without his books, his room felt like a body with its hearts cut out.”
“It was brave, It was rare. It was love, and it was beautiful.”
“Wasn't that what religions did? Squint at one another and declare, 'My unprovable belief is better than your unprovable belief. Suck it.”
“And that's how you go on. You lay laughter over the dark parts. The more dark parts, the more you have to laugh. With defiance, with abandon, with hysteria, any way you can.”
“I know it's not easy for you, living this life, but try to remember, always try to remember, you're not the only one with troubles.”
“You are a conniving, deceitful hussy. I stand in awe."
“Like mold on books, grow myths on history.”
“Mercy, she had discovered, made mad alchemy: a drop of it could dilute a lake of hate.”
“Was there any fate more bitter than to get what you long for most, when it's too late?”
“I will give them nightmares to haunt their dreams long after I'm gone.”
“You were true to her, even if she was not to you. Never repent of your own goodness, child. To stay true in the face of evil is a feat of great strength.”
“I'm afraid they're in love,"
"No way. There will be tasks. Like in a fairy tale."
“Stars got tangled in her hair whenever she played in the sky.”
“Yearning for love made her feel like a cat that was always twining around ankles, meowing Pet me, pet me, look at me, love me.”
“Life won't just happen to you boy, he said. You have to happen to it.”
“Soldiers and children do as they're told. Children grow out of it, but soldiers just die.”
“Never repent of your own goodness, child. To stay true in the face of evil is a feat of strength.”
Your dream is my dream, and your name is true. You are all of our hope.”
“He believed in magic, like a child, and in ghosts, like a peasant.”
“Cake for later, cake as a way of life.”
“We haven't been introduced. Not really.”
“Wishes don’t just come true. They’re only the target you paint around what you want. You still have to hit the bull’s-eye yourself.”
“...something was starting to take shape, out of magic and will. Smoke and bone.”
“How could you tell if your instincts were just hope in disguise, and if your hope was really desperation parading as possibility?”
“Hot, perpetually pissed-off angel seeks living pincushion for scowl practice and general stabbiness. No kissing.”
“There is the past, and there is the future. The present is never more than the single second dividing one from the other. We live poised on that second as it's hurtling forward—toward what?”
“Better to be the cat gazing coolly down from a high wall, its expression inscrutable. The cat that shunned petting, that needed no one. Why couldn't she be that cat?”
“Life doesn't need magic to be magical.”
“There are other ways of showing someone you love them, such as fetching them out of Hell.”
“Anyone who would wear all white like that clearly had issues. Just looking at him made her wish she had a paintball gun, but hell, you couldn’t pack for every eventuality.”
“Be a Samurai. Because you just never know what's behind the freaking sky.”
“I love vengeance like normal people love sunsets and long walks on the beach. I eat vengeance with a spoon like it’s honey. In fact, I may not even be a real person, but just a vow of vengeance made flesh.”
“She tastes like nectar and salt. Nectar and salt and apples. Pollen and stars and hinges. She tastes like fairy tales. Swan maiden at midnight. Cream on the tip of a fox’s tongue. She tastes like hope.”
“He actually listened, rather than pretending to listen while waiting a suitable interval before it was his time to talk again...”
“By contrast, the grime of her journey, the outre inappropriateness of the state of her, it felt like armor.I earned this dirt.Respect. The dirt.”
“Scientist and smart fellow learner-of-stuff, want to do samurai-monster training with us? We intend to become dangerous.”

💌 Hello!
💌 Share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!
Several of my long-running fics are close to being finished, and the first one out will be my Selkie AU, Moon and Her Maiden! On the night before leaving East Blue, Shanks encounters a selkie while skinny-dipping, get a kiss for his troubles, and then decides to stick around for a while, much to Makino's horror, who really hadn't thought that far and who now has to keep her identity a secret. Cue classic secret identity tropes, moonlit swims and water kisses, and, as always, an unhelpfully meddling crew. (It's also fairly raunchy, just fyi!)
I'm almost done editing the final chapter, which clocked in at just under 30K, and with luck I'll be posting it next week! I've already posted a snippet, but from the bonus chapter that I'm totally not writing:
Moonsongs
She wondered sometimes how her mother had managed, raising a selkie child with no knowledge of her kind, and the ways she’d differed from human children.
“Are you sure this is safe?”
The question drew her eyes from the horizon to where he stood beside her, waist-deep in the surf. He was holding their baby daughter above the water, cooing excitedly at the fish below the clear surface.
“Yeah, this seems a bit premature, Makino,” a voice called from the shore.
“She’s not even walking yet!”
Turning her head found the rest of his crew were gathered on the shore behind them, their expressions conveying similar concerns. Makino had half a mind to tell them they shouldn’t be pointing fingers, who didn’t have a prudent bone between them.
Well, there was Ben, but even he looked like he might voice his concerns. Or like he desperately needed a smoke.
Having found allies to back his case, “See?” Shanks asked. “I’m not the only one with misgivings.”
“She was born in the water, Shanks,” Makino reminded him. “And she needs to learn to change at some point.”
“But she’s so little,” Shanks said, holding her closer as she giggled and kicked her feet, her sealskin slipping into her brow, the sunlight bringing out the dappled spots in the red pelt. "What if something snaps her up?"
"There's nothing big enough to eat her for miles," Makino said, reaching up to adjust her pelt until it was sitting atop her hair, her little toothless grin beaming. "Besides, I'm not worried about that. He's looking out for her."
The look he gave her told her what he thought about this particular arrangement, but while he had a temper, the Lord of the Coast wouldn't let anything happen to her daughter.
Still not convinced, “What if a current carries her off?" Shanks asked, lifting her as Rowan made a giggling lurch for the water. "Did you think about that?"
“She’s half seal,” Makino pointed out, prim. "If it does, she'll swim back."
“I don’t see what the problem is,” Dadan said, her arms crossed where she stood on the beach behind them, her tail swinging lazily. With a nod at Ace, “I tossed you in when you were a few months old, and you turned out fine. Babies are buoyant.”
Blinking, Ace looked up at her. “You did what?”
“Explains a few things,” Sabo mused, only to get an unamused look from his brother.
"At least I float," Ace said, with a nod at Luffy. "Unlike hammer boy over here."
"Eh?" Luffy asked, and seeing their looks, "Oh, right! I can't swim."
"How did you survive this long without us?" Ace sighed, adjusting his straw hat where it had slipped into his brow.
“I still think we should wait longer,” Shanks said. “What about when she’s thirty? That sounds reasonable.”
Murmured agreement from the crew ashore, as Makino briefly considered just pushing him in, baby and all.

Sneak Peek
A little sneak peak of Chapter 5 of 'One Hale of Time'
yes, i know chapter 4 isn't out yet, shhhh
This is unfinished and not fully edited so this won't be in the chapter as is - it'll either be longer or the dialogue will have been changed.
Talia throws the baguette away - not even the enhanced healing rate of Werewolf genes can rid her of the headache forming behind her eyes - offering the wide-eyed child her brother brought a carefully motherly smile, as innocent as a bunny someone locked in a room with starving wolves. She gives Peter a pointed look, her baby brother's blue eyes as widely innocent as the child he brought and he keeps that same innocence even as he pours himself a drink.
"What? As wild as a pack of animals?" Renato mutters sweetly, tone dreary and flat, but the too-sharp scent of bitter roasted amusement makes Talia want to wrinkle her nose in disgust.
Not even old enough to know what coffee or cigarettes were and her nephew smelt like one of Peter's quiet underground Occult blackmarket meetings.
All espresso and clove, musky with a low sense of bitter sweetness and roasted depth. Touched fiantly by something sharp, a billowing cloud of smoke that stings her nose but has no smell.
Her headache worsens.
Tsunayoshi smiles, it looks sweet and innocent but Talia's bones start to itch under her skin, sharply unnatural orange-amber eyes wide with innocence and delight - she can't smell either on the boy, her fingers twitch, "That's right! Animals are always able to sense when something's not right, right? They're very good at finding unnatural things. Wolves have the best sense of smell, though, when it comes to canines and creatures."
Her heart drops, nerves alight, her smile as stiff as the baguette she'd just thrown away and her throat tight enough she feels like strangulation would be kinder.
Tsunayoshi still keeps his smile, too innocent to be genuine but scent sickly sweet with playfulness and amusement all of the sudden, holding onto her nephew's hand with a ferociousness that she's only seen in wolves and her skin begins to crawl.
The officer the child had brought with him, a man Talia had never seen or never noticed - suspicious in it's own right - made a sound low enough her ears pricked, like an omen of misfortune huffing out a dying breath.
Her skin crawled even more.
"You had something you wanted to show me, right, Renato?" The small brunette says sweetly, after a moment of silence so tense Talia could see her daughter Laura seconds from shifting, tugging on the sleeve of her nephew's jacket with a carefulness she tries but fails to read into, "Let's leave the adults to their boring talks and go do something fun."
Renato smiles - a wicked thing that reminds Talia of her baby brother - wolfish in every sense of the word and coy, like he won a battle no one knew was being waged and wanted to show off, "I quite think you'll like my room, il mio tesoro, it's private."
Tsunayoshi - even mentally, Talia felt like she was fumbling the child's name - only smiles that same sweet thing, as bright and airy as a summer sky and as equally inviting, "Silly, silly, Renato - someone might think you have other meanings with your words. I want to see if you have good taste or if you just throw money around."
Renato clicked his tongue, more playful than she's ever seen her cold and heartless nephew, gaze so warm it was like sunlight had reappeared and set the room ablaze, "I can promise you like it - my taste might be expensive but it's still good."
The two start to walk, mindless and unbothered by the daze they leave in their wake, hand-in-hand and chatting aimlessly about bed sizes and thread counts.
She feels frozen - off kilter and on uneven ground - watching the two children wander off without a care, without a word to her or any other adult, and she snaps her gaze to the delighted Peter hanging back with a half-finished glass of chardonnay, "Peter Joseph Hale."
"Do not full name me, Talia, I am not one your children." Peter says blandly back, tone a careful mix of mild and respectful that simply made it seem more disrespectful than it had any right to be.
And with a told as mild as milk but several degrees cooler, her brother adds, "Isn't it a wonderful thing that he's gone and made a friend?"
Talia decides, after barely any consideration, she's going to strangle her baby brother with her own two hands.

What special edition books would you love to add to your collection?
Now that I'm a subscriber to a couple of book boxes, I'm lucky enough to be able to purchase most of the sets I'm interested in directly from the company. And there are a couple from other boxes that made it to general sale (and I bought them for my birthday 🥳 ) or found some good deals on BST/eBay.
But there are some special edition sets from a year or two ago that I'd LOVE to get my hands on, like the Illumicrate Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Fairyloot An Ember in the Ashes, Fairyloot Legend anniversary set, and the Litjoy Strange the Dreamer. They're all either near impossible to find or resellers price them outside of my preferred price range 😩😩

Firepelt/jaw(Orghullo) writing. Started as a word vomit. Ended up editing it and messing with it. Now it's a short story of his fucking LIFE.
Firepelt is a fighter. Ever since he was a kit, he always prides himself in his prowess and blood thirst. He is a powerful and strong warrior under both Whitestar and Shellstar. Son to a hardened father called Dogheart and a brazen, proud mother named Redfoot.
He manages to keep a very boisterous and happy attitude despite this, mostly due to his aunt Berrytail's gentle teasing and his father's dry humor in the face of turmoil. Still, he doesn't go easy when training his apprentices. He follows Shellstar's trials and sees them as tests to make the clan as strong as the Heart Oak.
He is certain his path lies in this violence and that one day he will go out in a blaze of glory and flying fur.
And then he finally meets Owleye and Spidergaze's mother. Once just Blossom, now Blossomsky; She's a beautiful seal-point cat with short fur, with many scars from her time in the city, fighting off intact males. She never crosses much with the big clan-born male. Not until he has to help patch a hole in the Nursery.
And she's so very soft spoken and kind.
He falls instantly.
She's a forever queen, looking after kits when their mothers can't and making sure the nests are all lined with the softest moss. She helps Berrytail and then Pinestep with deliveries.
And all of a sudden this rough and tough fighter is in and out of the nursery himself, helping her carry large loads of moss and patching the branches that protect the den, even reinforcing them with thorns.
They have a litter together, to absolutely no one's surprise. A big litter, of seven! The biggest Oakclan has seen in a long time. Pinestep reads this as a good omen from Starclan. Little Mousekit and Bearkit had also been born only a few days prior.
And then came the drought, and the fire. A fire that caught and refused to die down. Firepelt is on a patrol when it starts. It's someone else who smells the smoke, and it's Spidergaze who comes clawing through the underbrush, in an uncharacteristic panic.
The nursery caught fire.
Firepelt, ignoring everything else, ignoring the fire that catches his long, dense fur, throws himself into the burning den.
Pinestep is in a panic, blindly dashing between the little bodies and ordering his mates around. They take all of the bodies to safer, wetter ground by the rivers.
He drags them out, all of them. Their coats blackened and nearly unrecognizable. He burns his jaw on coals he assumes are yet another kit, but continues even so.
Only Petalkit, Mousekit, and Bearkit survive.
Firepelt is a mess, unable to speak through his bleeding mouth. But, he is crying all the same, even as he curls around the tiny Petalkit and Pinestep tries to treat his wound, he presses his face into Blossomsky's charred fur.
Volepelt, the old tom and father of the other two, is much the same, though less injured and thanking Firepelt over and over again for saving them.
Once it's clear he will not fully recover from his wounds, Shellstar--in a strange streak of kindness--calls for their ancestors, even the recently deceased, and renames Firepelt to Firejaw. To honor his courage to tear flames away from their kits with his bare teeth and offer him retirement into the elder's den.
He only agrees to take it... if he may still help in the Nursery and assist in his daughter's mentoring.
Obviously, he's allowed. Even though he's still technically in his 'prime', his wound keeps him from being able to deliver a proper bite to prey to kill it, and one of the apprentices' tasks is to shred meat off the bones for him to be able to eat. The apprentices don't tend to mind, because he'll tell them stories while they do. Oakpaw especially loves listening.
One day, he does pass. Peacefully. Beartooth suspects an infection that settled into tissue he couldn't feel in his mouth until it was too late. The cat who once thought he'd go out in a blaze of glory, dies in his sleep, surrounded by kits and family.
He does get to see Petalfang become Deputy, but doesn't live to see the dog attack that takes Shellstar's final life and leaves her as leader.
When Petalfang opens her eyes in Starclan to receive her nine lives, her family is waiting. Her mother and siblings she only remembered as smells and soft noises, and her father, his eyes full of happy, proud tears. He's honored to give her her first life as a leader. For courage to do what it takes, no matter the cost.
He chants her new name the loudest.

Illumicrate Unboxing
What Lies Beneath May 2023
May's theme is "What Lies Beneath". I'm not a hundred percent sure what the theme actually entails so I couldn't say for sure how the items fit into it. The book was announced beforehand, which usually happens when a highly anticipated book is featured, but I haven't heard of this one, although I have heard of the author.
The featured book is "Witch King" by Martha Wells. The special edition isn't that special. The dustjacket doesn't look different from the standard edition. It has gorgeous artwork endpapers, and stencilled edges, but the hardcase foiling is a little underwhelming.
The first item is a plant pot. I love, love, love the design on this item! It's inspired by "House of Hollow", and it's so pretty. I'm not really sure what use I'm going to have for it, since I probably won't actually use it as a plant pot, but I love it.
Next is a book organiser. I've had these before, and they're not the most practical things to fill your house with, but I was actually in dire need of an organiser to replace the basket I was using for some of my paperbacks, so this came at the perfect time! This one is based on "Daughter of Smoke and Bone".
The next item is a metal bookmark. This is inspired by the featured book, "Witch King". I haven't read the book, so I don't know the relevance of the whale, but it's a really nice design, and it's quite a practical bookmark.
Lastly, we have a phone grip. This is inspired by "The Whispering Dark". It's a nice enough design, but honestly, I've just never understood the practicality of a phone grip. If I really super wanted a way of gripping my phone, I wouldn't want something that stuck out and made my phone thicker and harder to get in a pocket. But they're very popular so I'm clearly missing something.
Overall, this is a pretty good box, I'm definitely going to get some use out of most of these items, and I'll probably read the book too!

The Best Thing I Ate Last Month May Edition.
When I started kicking around the idea of writing about the best things I eat each month, I was trying to figure out if I should limit it to restaurant food or everything I eat. I ultimately decided it should include everything I eat because, more times than not, some of the best foods I eat are homemade. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the foresight to take more pictures of some of the great things we had or take any notes with the thought of writing about them, so I’m mainly going from memory for this month.
We started off the month pretty strong with some grilled ribeye steaks, grilled asparagus, and sautéed mushrooms. Grilling asparagus is my favorite way to make it. It’s done simply by tossing it with olive oil and kosher salt and quickly hitting it on a hot grill. It doesn’t take more than two or three minutes, and it’s very flavorful. I know a lot of people cook their mushrooms on the grill, too, but I think it robs them of most of their flavor, so I always opt for sautéing them in a pan with butter and a sprinkle of olive oil.
On Mother’s Day, we went to a cookout at my daughter's house, and our son-in-law Trey grilled some fabulous cheeseburgers that I will be the first to admit I overindulged in. But the star of that show was Christine’s desserts. She made a fantastic peanut butter pie, and I could have eaten the whole thing. But her toasted coconut cheesecake was on a whole different level. It may have been the best cheesecake I’ve ever had. She is becoming a very good savory cook in her own right, but she has a real talent for pastry which I hope she tries to develop.
Fricker’s is our go-to spot most weeks for many reasons. In my humble opinion, they have really good food at very reasonable prices, and most of their staff are fantastic. I had their original bone-in wings with their Bourbon Molasses sauce that I’ve fallen in love with. I love the crispy breading on their wings, even though David Chang says breaded wings are entirely un-American. Go to hell, David Chang. I love them. For a side, I had the brew city fries. I don’t know what that seasoning is they put on them, but damn, it’s good.
I smoked some baby back ribs that turned out fantastic. Whenever I make ribs, they will always make their way high up on the list of best things I ate. Which causes this weird dynamic in which because they are good every time, they don’t stand out in my mind like they used to. I love and crave them, but after I eat them, they just don’t stand out to me as if I had something good for the first time. Even if I don’t enjoy that dish as much, it still tends to stand out more because it’s something new. So I wonder if even though I think my ribs are great, they will ever stand out enough to me for me to say they were the best thing I ate last month.
I had the steak fajitas from Dos Lunas Mexican Bar and Grill in Tipp City. They were delicious but perhaps not the most stand-out fajitas I’ve ever had. If there’s a bad fajitas spot, though, I haven’t found it yet. Can someone please explain to me why I only get three tortillas, though? I always run out and just finish with a fork. Come on now, just give us more tortillas!
I came across a recipe for Korean beef rice bowls that I wanted to try. I try to stick to a recipe the way it is written the first time I make it, then tweak it more to my personal tastes. That will be the case with this recipe. It was good, but I feel like it could be better with some work.
I think the stand out for breakfast this month was my egg, ham, and provolone cheese breakfast sandwiches, which are, by far, Cathy’s favorite breakfast. I also made some fried eggs served over spicy hash browns with sriracha mayonnaise that would have been outstanding had I not had an amateur moment and broken two of the three eggs on the flip.
Hands down, the best thing I ate last month was Christine Applegate’s Toasted Coconut Cheesecake. I’m not a huge cheesecake fan, so for me to be blown away by it says a lot about how good it really was. The toasted coconut cut the richness of the cheesecake perfectly. It truly was an amazing dessert.
I would love for you to drop me a line and tell me what was the favorite thing you ate last month. And again, as someone I greatly admire once said, “Cook Free, Or Die”

I was tagged by @talktomeinclexa and I thought way too long about this lol
Last song I listened: Not compleately sure because my spotify won't tell me and I just woke up, but either the radio-edit-version of Mirrors - Justin Timberlake, or Treat you better - Shawn Mendes
Last show I watched: Grey's Anatomy... like yesterday after about six month of pausing it because I didn't want to watch certain character's dead on seasons 11 so I stopped watching and just this week I watched it... I was bad... not as bad as I had imagined as an episode... but a really unfair dead :'(
Last book I read: I haven't read one in a while but I'm pretty sure is the first or second of the 'Daughter of Smoke and Bone' saga (I know that if I started the second I didn't get very fat lol)
Current obsession: Apart from the ever ongoing obsession with the 100... I don't know really... thinking about very detailed timeliness for my WIP's and those stories I haven't started, and just not writtinf a damn thing about them and I guess women? (Little coming out ahead) I kinda just figured I'm Bi this January... and I guess I've been kinda making up for the denial in my head lmao
Tagging: @thatonewherelexasachef I know you loved this things :) , @cantgetoutofmyheda , @legendofbisexuals and @comandrlexa if you haven't done it yet :)

Who is this, that with unerring step dares tempt the wilds, where only Nature's foot has trod? 'Tis Contemplation, daughter of the grey Morning! She steps majestic, and with her pure quill on every flower writes Wisdom's name. Now bending low, she whispers in my ear, "O man, how great, how little you are! O man, slave of each moment, lord of eternity! See where Mirth sits on the painted cheek? Does it not seem ashamed of such a place, and grow immoderate to brave it out? O what a humble garb true Joy puts on! Those who want Happiness must stoop to find it; it is a flower that grows in every vale. Vain foolish man, that roams on lofty rocks! Where, 'cause his garments are swollen with wind, he fancies he has grown into a giant! Lo then, take Humility and wear it in your heart; lord of yourself, you then are lord of all. Clamor brawls along the streets, and destruction hovers in the city's smoke; but on these plains, and in these silent woods, true joys descend; here build your nest, here fix your staff. Delights blossom around; numberless beauties blow; the green grass springs in joy, and the nimble air kisses the leaves; the brook stretches its arms along the velvet meadow, and its silver inhabitants sport and play; the youthful sun joys like a hunter roused to the chase: he rushes up the sky and lays hold on the immortal coursers of day; the sky glitters with the jingling trappings! Like a triumph, season follows season, while the airy music fills the world with joyful sounds." I answered, "Heavenly goddess! I am wrapped in mortality, my flesh is a prison, my bones the bars of death. Misery builds over our cottage roofs, and Discontent runs like a brook. Even in childhood, Sorrow slept with me in my cradle; he followed me up and down the house when I grew up; he was my school-fellow; thus he was in my steps and in my play, till he became to me as my brother. I walked through dreary places with him, and in church-yards; and I oft found myself sitting by Sorrow on a tombstone!"
-- William Blake, Contemplation, as recorded in "The Complete Poetry and Prose of William Blake", page 442, edited by David V. Erdman, with small adjustments made by myself to modernize some spelling and grammar
