if you wouldn't mind sharing, what did schitt's creek do disappointingly in its story? thank you!

so, like. i mean, i think the show was flawed from the start -- i think a lot of the jokes rely on this image of the, like, small-town 'hick,' that in turn relies on a pretty hefty set of classist assumptions that i don't think dan levy was, you know, interested in interrogating in any serious way. i don't watch sitcoms for their revolutionary politics lol but there were certain moments in eg. roland and jocelyn's characterisation in particular that left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. (ftr i think season 1 is pretty poor, 2-4 are genuinely good tv, 5 + 6 are a mess.)

but my specific frustration was -- so, at the end of season 4, we see moira despondent that the crows have eyes 2 was shelved; we also see the culmination of a season's worth of work having gone into the community production of cabaret. from here, the plot beats seemed so obvious to me that i was literally like certain i knew how moira's arc would end: clearly, this was an opportunity for her to realise that pursuing the sort of 'fame' she had before was a losing battle that was making her unhappy (and had always made her unhappy!), and that she could find genuine fulfilment through pursuing the kind of 'local,' small-town community opportunities that cabaret was supposed to represent. i mean obviously i have my various communist gripes with this position, but like, by the standards i hold sitcoms from nepo babies to, it's fair enough! it's a compelling enough response to the setup of the show -- the roses have lost everything and have to learn to live without everything. moira relied on a seemily fictitious narrative of public adoration; an insanely easy way to eke some character growth out of her would surely be to have her realise that small, local projects with her friends bring her a joy that public validation never could.

but, like. by the end of the show, moira gets back on the showbusiness ladder, to the point where her old show is rebooted. johnny gets a foot back in the business world. alexis is a businesswoman. david is a businessman! david chooses to stay in schitt's creek whilst the others leave for NY and cali, which is a compelling enough narrative choice on its own, but like -- come on, he opens a v bougie business and Gets Married and whatever the fuck else, it's boring, it's the same old narrative of assimilation into the bourgeois classes. it makes for a nice contrast against the end of season one but i don't believe he's a fundamentally changed person; he's just found a way to make his old tendencies make sense in a new setting.

there's a sense that the lives of the roses essentially reset; that they've been given the opportunity to return to their old lives, taking the 'lessons' they were able to learn from their time in schitt's creek with them. if anything's been "learnt" then it's these v individualist perspectives on, like, bootstraps and hard work; david and alexis have graduated from being nepo children into people with a legitimate intellectual claim to the bourgeois class. johnny has proven himself as a businessman. moira has uhhhh put on a production of cabaret, which justifies her going back to the old life that clearly made her miserable. like -- there's no sense that their old lives were bad, just a sense that they hadn't quite earnt the right to them yet. and in that, everyone in schitt's creek ends up ultimately reduced to a vehicle by which they can earn the right to their bourgeois status. it's a v nasty ethos, and as much as i find individual points of the show pretty funny (like, funnier than your average sitcom), i just -- like, it's so cruel at its centre?

Right now David was on his knees in his and Patrick’s bedroom, taking steadying breaths as Patrick loped the blue rope around David’s body slowly around him. It wasn’t often David asked Patrick to dominate him. When they first got together, David found out his inclination of Patrick to be slightly wrong. But the way Patrick said, “Oh, I’m gonna get the money,” or, “You’re going to sit here and think about what you’ve done,” that time when they got back together… That tone never failed to leave David’s vivid imagination or fantasies.

As soon as they are at the scene a cop is already there waiting for him. He’s younger than TK expected. He greets his dad before letting him take the lead of the scene. TK doesn’t get a good look at him, doesn’t bother interacting with him - too busy to do his job of getting Allison out of her car. In fact, he even forgets about the timer on his wrist.

If he did, he would’ve noticed that the countdown is less than a minute.

When the 126 find out that Allison has another baby - one not still inside her - it doesn’t take long for Paul to figure out the baby miraculously landed in a tree. And isn’t that a news story. The cop comes up to TK and asks, “How the hell-” when two distinct buzzing sounds go off.

Both men look down at their wrists.

Just like how they found him when his hood fell off and people let out cries that the Princess Assassin is here amongst them.

I don’t know about you all, but I’m struggling to get in the holiday spirit this year. It’s been a rough year for a lot of people, I think. So I thought, why not share some winter/holiday fics and encourage people to do the same? So the rules are simple. I tag everyone who writes fanfic who hasn't done it yet! because I love reading these kinds of things

1) How many works do you have on AO3?

203, 11 under bleachbleachbleach.

2) What's your total AO3 word count?

827,868

3) What fandoms do you write for?

I currently write for Bleach!

4) Top 5 fics by kudos?

I use a site skin that hides kudos/comment count/bookmark/hit data on all of the fics on AO3, because they make me feel bad about myself.

5) Do you respond to comments?

Yes! I post my fanfic on the Internet because I want to talk to people about these characters and these stories. Of course I’m going to take the opportunity. If someone comments on a fic of mine, chances are I’ve probably re-read the whole fic before replying, because, again, I’m going to TAKE that opportunity.

6) What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

All my fics are fairly dour the entire time, but I don’t think they tend to end badly. I’m most interested in the afterwards of something having ended badly (and/or something that is probably going to end badly, but hasn’t yet and maybe it won’t).

7) What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

All my fics are fairly dour the entire time (she says, again), but happiest overall and happiest ending is probably Some Things, because nothing hard is obviously about to happen right after it ends (e.g. Aizen, the Winter War, the rest of TYBW, etc.).

8) Do you get hate on fics?

Hate, not usually. Passive-aggressive dismissiveness or unsolicited critique, yes.

9) Do you write smut?

I’ve written sexual content, but idk if it’s technically smut? In that the point of it is often not arousal. Like, I’m not expecting anyone to want to read it because it promises to be sexually satisfying and scorching hot. Usually the characters are Going Through It and either the sex is incidental or it makes everything worse. I love either an inconsequential bathroom fuck or sex that exists somewhere on the spectrum of Weird. All of which can be kink in itself, yes! But I’ve never written anything and thought, "yeah, THIS, this is gonna make someone nut."

10) Do you write crossovers?

No, but if I did it would be about Iba being great friends with King from Run with the Wind. This is THE crossover canon of all time, mark me.

11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not as far as I know. 

12) Have you ever had a fic translated?

I’m not sure? I’ve had people offer, usually never to be heard from again, but I think it may have happened once, a long time ago.

13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, but I didn’t really enjoy the process. Or didn’t *get* it? I guess I don’t really understand how it works? I barely understand how RP could work, lol. 

Obviously we run this blog in tandem, and have co-written posts. I regularly hop into docs with multiple authors for things like abstracts, copy, organizational statements, etc. But fanfic is, to me, a completely different creature. That’s between you and the characters.

14) What's your all-time favorite ship?

I don’t think I’ve ever thought about a ship in this way. This is not about fandom or fanfic, but I will say I’ve reliably cried about David/Patrick’s wedding (and entire courtship) EVERY time I’ve watched Schitt’s Creek. S-tier.

15) What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

I used to be someone of many fics and many WIPs, but in Bleach I am someone with one WIP and a selection of other posted fics, all of which have been pinched off of my one WIP, like little spider plants.

16) What are your writing strengths?

My strength is that I enjoy the process of writing fanfic. Like, obviously it’s frustrating when something isn’t coming together, or is just bad (though sometimes it’s still enjoyable even when I know the product itself is bad). Sure, it’s often DISTINCTLY UN-FUN if this is happening while the fic is on deadline, but overall I like writing fanfic, and I find I don’t relate to most "writers avoiding writing" memes I see. (Well, with work writing, I find them highly relatable. I’ve heard there are people in my profession who enjoy work writing. COULDN’T BE ME.) By god, I did not wrest away this time to write fanfic, only to NOT enjoy it!!

Product-wise, my strength is that I know my taste, at least, so I usually like the things I post, even if I don’t think they did everything well. Craft-wise, my personal favorite trait of my own writing is the rhythm and repetition, and the layering of metaphor that results.

17) What are your writing weaknesses?

How badly I want to hear from people after I have shared something. My father once told me (not about fanfic lol) that "not everything requires a response" but man, if I’m going to put my heart on the line, my heart requires one, regardless of whether the greater balance of the universe does. 

Craft-wise, I think my weakness is sometimes leaving too much to implication (and the opposite, overwriting or overmechanizing, executed out of fear of leaving too much to implication).

18) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?

For Bleach, I consider all dialogue as already in-translation, even though the only language these fics exist in is English. Depending no how important I think the dialogue is or how well-versed I am in how the character speaks in Japanese, I will sometimes spend a lot of time thinking about how the scene would go in Japanese, and what the best translation would be for that in English. I’m nowhere near fluent in Japanese; I just really like translation theory. In practice, the way this works is like, I’ll have a certain grammatical construction in mind, or an order of phrases in mind, and then I spend a lot of time deciding if what I want for the scene is a "Nabokov does Onegin" translation (literal, "pure," estranging), or a "Pushkin does Shakespeare" translation (in the artistic idiom of the target language). This kind of playground is one of the things I love most about Bleach, and one of the reasons I started writing for Bleach in the first place. I really enjoy it!

I am not fluent enough in any language other than English to want to write dialogue in it. I think all of you who write fanfic outside of your primary language(s) are phenomenal.

19) First fandom you wrote for?

Online and disseminated to others? Inuyasha, back when you had to also build the website to host it. (We discovered FFN later, lol.)

20) Favorite fic you've ever written?

I really like most of the fic I’ve written, to be honest. I think that’s probably less true of things pre-2009, but probably some of that stuff, too. Some are more take or leave, but of everything I’ve written in the last five years, there’s only one where I looked at the title just now and thought 'ehhhh.'

On this blog, I try to avoid talking in the specific about things I’ve made that aren’t for Bleach, but How Many Thousands is my top favorite. It was written for one of my best friends in the world, before we were actually friends. I consider it my love letter to her.

For Bleach, it’s probably my East Rukongai Soul Train fanfic, which I have  read more times than the entire rest of the planet combined. I have read it many times. Thank you to those of you who also read to the end, because you are one of the highlights of my entire 2023!

I'm very belated for this, but thanks for the tag @hbyrde36!

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

18! But a lot of those are in the Wildflowers series. (Maybe it should have been chaptered? I still don't know what the right answer was, lol.)

So, I basically have 3 things to read, if you count the two parts of the Jagged Little Pill series as one, and I always do. Wildflowers is for those that wanted more of Tuesday's, and not that many people wanted to read Tuesday's in the first place, haha. So it's a niche of a niche. But I hold it close to my heart, and it makes me happy that a few of you have been so on board with it, too. ❤️

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

487,289. Which is kind of crazy. I just looked, and I started writing You Oughta Know on July 30th, 2022. From then until today, that's 457 days. That's averaging over 1,000 words a day. That seems wild. (And I've got a lot of unpublished words still in the chamber, haha.)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Just Stranger Things right now, but I'm not opposed to branching out as the mood strikes. I think I'd love to take on David/Patrick of Schitt's Creek someday.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Yes! I definitely try to respond to them all. Sometimes I'm a little slow about it though, sorry!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I like a happy ending. But Time to Move On, I guess? It's just a part of a series, so it's not like the ending is permanently sad, but that one does end at a sad point in their lives.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of them are pretty happy, but I'm partial to the epilogue ending of Take the Money and Run. That will always have my heart. ❤️

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've gotten a very little, so I feel pretty lucky.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, and I write what fits the larger story, I hope. I've written M/M and F/M, so far. I haven't done a full PWP, though some of the parts of Wildflowers were supposed to be that, but the dang plot kept getting in the way. Whoops.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Just little brief ones, so far. There's a couple in Take the Money and Run that I find fun, but if you don't get them, I don't think they detract from the story.

Not that I'm aware of.

No, and I'm not sure it'd work for most of my stuff, with all the mixed media.

No, I'm not sure how good I'd be at that. I write by jumping all over the place. That'd probably be annoying for someone else to deal with, lol!

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

All time? Man, that's hard. I'm obviously deep in a Steddie hole at the moment. But I'll go with my first. Pacey and Joey of Dawson's Creek. They brought me into fandom, into fic, so they get the gold star. (For more current ships, definitely Steddie and David & Patrick of Schitt's Creek.)

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I don't really post anything I'm not basically finished with. But from my private stash, I like the idea of Here You Come Again, but I just have been writing other stuff. I'm going to take on my other Steddie (Untitled, But Not Really) WIP during NaNoWriMo. I've never done that before, so I thought might be fun, since I saw you can go rogue and write 50,000 words on something that isn't brand spanking new. So, even if that fic doesn't need 50,000 words to finish (and I'm not sure it does) it might give me the push to try to finish it up. I've been sitting on my hands on it since I decided to sign up, which is fine, I needed to finish up Wildflowers. (And get ahead on my Steddie Holiday Drabbles: I've finished 8 of the 30 so far.)

16. What are your writing strengths?

From the comments, I'm going to go with that I can make readers laugh from time to time, which makes me so happy. I also like to dig into the research.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Um, also the research, lol. Sometimes I'll be researching until I'm just wasting time. Some things really don't matter in the big picture. (But they do to me!!) And I need to learn to let them go.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

That's not something I've done, I don't think. But I have tried to respond to comments that were written in a different language using Google Translate.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Dawson's Creek. Many, many moons ago. At the turn of the millennium. (That's fun to say, ha!)

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

Unpopular opinion time! I know Take the Money and Run is more popular. By, well, a lot. And I do love it. It gave me the bug to write long fic again. But I have big feelings for Tuesday's Gone With the Wind. It was such an undertaking. All the mixed media. The endless research. And I fell in love with those characters in the process.

It wasn't as popular as TtMaR, but that's okay. It makes me very happy that it reached even as many people as it did. I know that author's note was enough to scare anyone away, haha. Add in the CNTW and it's amazing anyone read it at all. Thanks to those of you that did! You've made me so happy. ❤️

NICE ASK WEEK! If you could make a list of the top fictional characters that all combine to describe you and your spirit, your soul characters, who would they be and why?

So I had to sit with this one for a bit because… well, because I have a very obvious top two, but they’re also benefitting from recency(ish) bias. But the truth is this question has actually made me realise how fundamentally unrepresented I feel in media in a lot of ways that are really core to who I am, and that… is a shitty epiphany to have lol.

Anyway. That’s for therapy. This is for nice ask week! 😂

David Rose. I’ve talked about this at length lol, but before I watched Schitt’s Creek I had a bunch of different people recommend it—including, like, my best friend since I was six and another friend for whom we were in each other’s weddings—and no one had thought to warn me how deeply and thoroughly I would see myself in David Rose. Like, it was unsettling. I too am a pansexual hot mess with an outrageous fashion sense and a messy romantic history who hides deep-seated insecurity and anxiety behind a thin veneer of a prickly, obnoxious personality. I too have known I was queer from a young age and chose a fairly chaotic way of coming out to my mum. I too have a history of partying and of everything that comes along with that. I too settled down in a way very different to what I had expected to want when I was younger, and it took me a while to recalibrate that. A great, great deal of what I’ve written for David’s character is uhhhhh way more autobiographical than it should be—just, like, the rich and North American version 😂

And then there’s Alex Claremont-Diaz. My bilingual beloved. My clumsy, caffeine-addicted mspec disaster. My early Aries with another fire sign rising. My child of divorce with all the abandonment issues that come with that, whether we admit it or not. My driving as a coping mechanism, my late-diagnosed ADHD who struggles with real friendships, my diving into things with both feet, my teenage predilection for drinking away my feelings, my enduring and vital friendships with my ex. ❤️

Word choice and confidence.

I will sit there and debate about word choice. I tend to tell versus show I'm working on improving this, but I drive myself crazy reformulating sentences to show versus tell.

I will then sit there anxious once I hit the submit button.

Kind of terrifies me that I'll translate incorrectly.

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).

I swear, I always have a bunch of random AUs floating around in my head at any given moment. Okay one thing we need more of in the LS fandom are music fics! Give me TK forming a band in his garage, and Carlos falling in love with him watching him perform in a seedy bar every week on the edge of town. Or one of them owning a record/music shop that the other frequents. I also think about professional dancer Carlos way too often! Carlos needing to find a partner, and for some reason, the only person willing/able is TK who is a horrendous dancer. Anyway, too many AU ideas, not enough time!

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)

Jake from Schitt's Creek, I may not be a huge fan of him, but he's created some hilarious scenes and top tier lines as a result of his role in the show.

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

I'll do 9-1-1 LS because I can't think of much for Schitt's Creek lol 1. more friendship fics!! give me all the platonic love between the firefam 2. more pure domestic fluff, because we could always use more of that 3. more fandom fests! they take a ton of work i know, but i've always loved the fests people have created in the schitt's creek fandom, and i was surprised to not find many in this fandom

V - Which character do you relate to most?

David Rose and TK Strand, my beloved, hurt faves! For David personally, I relate to his struggles and inner turmoil a lot, and honestly, I relate to that destructive part of TK, too, but also his love of animals and general silliness. I also really related to Stevie Budd's sarcastic personality and her struggle to connect with people/her journey.

I think my toxic work environment is rubbing off into other aspects of my life, and I've been doubting so many things lately. I hate feeling this way- I'm usually pretty self-assured about myself. 5. Do you respond to comments? Why or Why not? I do! If someone took the time to comment, I want to do the same. I remember the first response I received after leaving a comment, and it was so exciting. And, some of those first authors I read I now consider friends. Also, if I'm having a bad day, seeing a notification that someone commented makes that day not so bad.

6. What is the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I think I specialize in humor, fluff, and HEs. I want someone to feel good after reading one of my fics, or to have a good laugh. But, in Breaking Down (the prequel to Rings), Arielle has the baby. You already know what will happen to her, so, for me, it was sad because I really liked her as a character, and she was just what David needed at that time in his life before his world was turned upside down.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Probably the epilogue in Rings. David and Patrick finalize Patrick adopting Maddy and she changes her last name to Rose.

8. Do you get hate on fics? No, but I did get a criticism on Open Wide because I did not use the right anesthesia on David! LOL

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Not really, but I have dabbled in it. I don't feel particularly good at it, so I tend to keep it to soft kisses, tender moments, fluff.

had a dream where i was walking a red carpet representing(?) some nonexistent long-running genre show from the early 2000s called like “pet boys” or something, aesthetic inspired by the band swans (???) and also the outsiders, and the whole cast was there milling around off-camera in casual clothing. and i was dressed in some fancy one-of-a-kind suit like something david rose from schitt’s creek would wear to his wedding, and i had the men’s haircut I’ve been dreaming abt getting for months. and ruth connell who played rowena on spn was there and i made her erupt into laughter by rolling my eyes and saying “great” after she claimed that the only sure thing abt a hypothetical spn cast reunion was that "dean would be there"

and she like hugged me and laughed some more at my jokes and i was Ecstatic. and i think ayo edebiri was there too

one of my mutuals was also there in the flesh (amorphously) and they called out to some renowned writer man like “hey what are you doing here bro” and he was like “oh i wrote for spn towards the end… living the dream lol” and my mutual gave him an unconvincing “of course. good for you.” and i was very amused by this exchange

the devil wears mid-range denim I mean, Patrick as a charming devil, how can you go wrong? Making him a devil made for really great opportunities for banter and Oh I'm gonna get the money energy. I'm really partial to this one and I need my creative brain to come back so I can revisit this AU.

Everything's Too Cold... But You're So Hot Here's a comment in the first chapter of my gdoc from @treluna4 that I think about literally all the time, it makes me so happy that I was able to convey this feeling with my words: This feels like an action movie. “Come with me If you want to live.” It’s fucking awesome Plus there's fake dating and forced proximity/only one bed, and I worked really hard on it!

Rescue Mission I just really love writing a slightly weird AU, like this one in which Stevie, David and Ronnie (and everyone else in Schitt's Creek except for Patrick) are aliens. I had a lot of fun writing this, and like devil!Patrick, I really would like to return to this one day (I have about 300 words of a sequel sitting dormant in a doc, one day...)
