Emo in-game parallels between two of my DND characters where being enticed to their wildest dreams through psychic magic involved Pyrus once again being engaged to his late partner, Arlok, and Ector's engagement to his evil patron being called off.
Waking up was painful for both of them. ;-;

How the OGL will affect YOU the Player
Gamer Solidarity is important, but here are the ways it might affect you the player. If the new OGL happens as it was written in the leak, here's how it might affect you, the person who only plays - It WILL cost you more money - WotC/Hasbro wants to move to a monthly subscription. One D&D would see you paying a monthly fee even if you're not online. So if you're using something like Roll20 or Tabletop Simulator, you'd be paying licensing fees for D&D on top of whatever they charge to use their platform. (they also want to do micro-transactions, which could also make it pay-to-win, but I'll cover that in another point).
It will be harder to find a group - Gamer Solidarity means a lot to a lot of people. Those of us who are mostly unaffected are still likely to side with the creators of the content we love. People are going to be refusing to play the new version, and moving to totally different systems or playing the old versions straight from the books. It's also going to be harder to find somebody willing to GM, which leads me into the next point -
There will be less GMs - Even if you somehow don't care that it's goinng to cost more for GMs, the new OGL will make it harder for them to run the game (which, BTW, 5th is already a lot more work for GMs than a lot of other systems) it's going to make the pool of people willing to run D&D smaller. Just don't play the new system you might say? Well, WotC has made it so it costs licensing fees to run it with Roll20 or Tabletop Simulator- and they're charging GMs more. Not to mention how if a GM uses 3rd party content, that content may not be available anymore thanks to the new OGL. Also, if you manage to find a GM running the newest version, the micro-transactions WotC wants to add in will make balancing encounters much more difficult.
Your favorite 3rd party creators will probably leave D&D - There's a lot of content that's been published under the old OGL and instead of grandfathering that in, WotC wants to just revoke the license. These means legal action could possibly be taken against them, even if they're publishing for versions of D&D that are out of print. The new OGL also means that WotC is allowed to just TAKE their content - so for fear of having their IP stolen, a lot of creators just aren't going to make things for D&D anymore. For ANY version.
Public Play will be an even bigger nightmare - This isn't really the OGL here, but this monthly subscription and micro-transaction BS only rewards those with cash and you WILL find yourself at the table with some asshole who bought a bunch of crap and is making the session all about them. I was there, I saw it happen with 4th.
None of this will affect me! - Well, good for you I guess? If you already have a steady game group who is all financially well off enough (or has a member willing to sponsor those that aren't) and you're all excited to try out the next edition D&D - cool, but if there are enough of you, you're supporting the people who do NOT care about you or the game. All they want is your money - and wouldn't it FEEL better to put that money somewhere better? (if your answer is to play in person, with an old edition, from books you already have, you're actually already kinda supporting the movement against the new OGL - be vocal about it)
Final Points - WotC didn't make D&D, they bought it. We aren't talking about a creator trying to regain control of their IP here, we're talking about a greedy company that wants to squash the competition. 3.0 saw a huge D&D resurgence into popularity, thanks a lot to the OGL. They tried messing with it before, this is why 4th edition gets shit on so much - I was there. (4th is actually a wonderfully accessible system and corporate greed messed it up). Fifth is so popular because the OGL came back, because content creators could make stuff for the new system again. WotC wants to STEAL these creators content. It's baked into the new OGL - they want the 3rd Party Creators to pay WotC royalties but if they take your self-published content and print it in one of their official books? They owe you jack-all. This will change the face of how IP legally works if it's allowed to just happen. It sets a DANGEROUS precedent for large companies to be able to retroactively steal IP.
Call to Action - Be against it, be loud, share with others WHY this is bad. Vote with your wallet, because that's all that WotC cares about- they have shown us now more than ever before, they do NOT care about you or the community. CANCEL YOUR DnD BEYOND if you have one - they have actually said this internally that the only numbers they're looking at as proof of if this will work are the DnD Beyond memberships. Cancel it. Might I suggest Roll20, Foundery, Tabletop Simulator, or Obsidian Portal for storing your character sheets for now?
Hope this helped somebody. I might write more about this topic.

I actually just had one of the best TTRPG sessions that I’ve DM’d, and it wasn’t even like about the actual session, which was great there was some heavy roleplay moments that were awesome. But just because the whole party in and out of character got along and we reminisced about past campaigns and it was just, so refreshing.
For context my last dnd group exploded a little bit six months ago, and three of us fractured together and formed a new pathfinder group with a few new people. It’s been touch and go, but honestly, it’s starting to feel alright.

I don’t know if people have seen what’s been happening over on twitter regarding DnD celebrities abusing their power and status to treat creatives and freelancers like shit, but as a blog that focus on original DnD content, I wanna ask:
How the fuck have we ended with DnD celebrities so powerful people are terrified of talking how abusive they are? How come people have to expect backslash even when it comes to things like “hey, these people aren’t paying their artists on their extremely lucrative projects”?
This isn’t the first time it happens, but please, be aware that a lot of these people have got incredibly powerful and are abusing their power. Even if you really like their shows or whatever, be ready to get disappointed when yet a few more are found out to be more of the same crap. And be ready to support the people who are putting a nail on their careers for talking against their abusers.

I've been on the Roll20 website for the last few days because I just want to find a group to play with that isn't a bunch of literal children but I just don't know if this is going to work out.
Every time I find something that I think I could handle, something in the listing makes me second guess myself. Several that I almost joined mentioned that they stream their games and I just don't know if I could handle that. One group mentioned being lgbt+ friendly but also talked about how everyone in the group are artists and super talented and the listing felt so overwhelming just to read. And the one game I did join, the players spent most of the game talking about balls and I got so tired I called it an early night, though they were really nice and patient with me so I think I'll go back for at least one more session but they seem to play far too often for me to keep up. Also, the game had some pay to win features, which had me side eyeing when a dude mentioned he had an airship.
I almost want to run a oneshot of my own, just to get a fell for it but I get so uncomfortable about DMing for strangers.

people have been talking about the new OGL and Wizards of the coasts shitty business decisions and I'm sitting here in awe because I thought we were all pirating this shit? I thought we were all on wikidot and looking up free pdfs of the books online because I a'int gonna pay just for a specific subclass in only one of the books
but in all seriousness tho, I know creators are gonna be the ones hit hard by this which is just, an exponentially shitty thing to do. WOTC has been taking its fanbase for granted for a long time now and I'm just hoping other systems step in to fill the void.

friends I’m standing up to someone who caused me a lot of ✨relationship trauma✨ today (made a big post about them a while back relating to D&D)
wish me luck.
I don’t actually like super care about their response, because I’m super solid in how I feel and this is mainly closure, but it’s still scary bc I haven’t spoken to them in months. I just need to do this to stop thinking about it.

hey I'm gonna vent about something DnD related for a second
so last year I got to be in this really cool DnD thing for charity hosted by a great fandom person with a celebrity of my fav show at the time. It was awesome! And apparently I made a good impression!
later that same actor's normal weekly DnD group was looking for a new member for their webshow and put out a call for applications. I was like sure why not I've been dying to play, so I applied.
Then I got an interview with the DM and that went well.
Then I did a second interview with the entire cast and that went well.
Then I got a DM saying hey you're gonna be in the show if our friend doesn't come back by July. Cool! I could be patient.
And then I just never heard from them again (: and it's now September and I believe there's someone new on their cast last I saw (:
I spent hours in interviews and taking notes and brainstorming my character and trying to remember their homebrew rules and lore
And then just ghosted (:
Thank you, very professional. (I have no hard feelings with the actor, we're still moots on Twitter and interact some)
So now I'm debating DMing for the first time in my life bc I'm just fucking dying to play, thankfully Baldur's Gate 3 coming out has sated some of that. My friends all insist I'd be a great DM but I'm concerned being a good writer (and I'm still not convinced I am) won't translate to being a good DM. And like
Idk I'm still pretty offended and annoyed. Like it's less that I didn't get in the show, what's whatever I don't care, it's just that my time was so blatantly disrespected.

Dealing with players have the ability to fly in dnd or pathfinder is really as simple. Any world that has flying creatures ie. Dragons, aaracokcra, flumphs is going to be well prepared to defend against these threats. The problem become that if a player has flight and you as a dm hasn't planned for it. Your players character has a super power.

We Won - For Now
Newest news on OGL - WotC has backed off. They're leaving the OGL 1.0a in place, and they're putting the SRD 5.1 into the Creative Commons.
Thank you all who did your part and kept saying something, who canceled your DnD Beyond Accounts, who have swapped to other systems - you did it! You told a huge company where they could stick it and they backed off.
I still don't know for sure if VTTS competition is safe - one of the posts I read said they're backing off of that too? (that was such a slimy move to try- make a better one and let THAT win us over- FFS)
I'm still going to make my post about alternatives, but it's nice to breath a little easier knowing that some huge company hasn't threatened the creative works of so many.
If anything else comes across my radar, I'll be sure to blog about it, but I am taking a mental break from that fight for now.
If you feel like this change is enough and want to go back to WotC, I feel like this is a big enough olive branch to support your decision - but I'm not sure I'm going back, and you should stay wary. Hopefully the Exec level people have learned that we won't let them hurt our community. They made this an adversarial relationship- treat it like one.
I think exploring other games will be good for the DnD Community, there are other systems out there that might fit you better. Other worlds and more GM support, and Indie Publishers who do it for the love of the game. I will always love DnD, but that doesn't mean I have to support WotC.
Thanks for all the notes on my other blogs about this- I'm super small time, so it was really nice!

D&D has done so much for me since I was young, the community is fun for the most part and games with friends are amazing, but I’m literally never playing the new content or buying new D&D stuff ever again after this shit.
The information in the video here has been verified and double-checked by lawyers. It’s the most thorough and up-to-date information we have.
I could rant all day about how much these changes would and in part already have ruined the game, hurt the community and its creators, and how it plays into the digital age of ‘you must have a subscription and you never own anything you pay for’.
But honestly, I’m just too tired for it. There’s other TTRPGS, and I’ve always enjoyed playing as many types of games as possible. Outside of playing 5e with friends for oneshots or homebrews occasionally, I no longer plan to support the game and especially not the company behind it.
Please keep in mind that regardless of what games you play or what hobbies you enjoy, if you do not fight for them, corporate greed will poison them. I don’t care what your opinion on D&D as a whole is, whether you like it or you hate it for how big it’s gotten the past few years, what has happened recently is a warning and will set a precedent.
This isn’t the time to argue with each other about what TTRPGS are better, or what’s popular and what’s not, this is a time to observe and be reminded that any hobby community can be greatly impacted if the people up top get too comfortable with greed and mistreating their fans. That’s all. I hope you all find TTRPGs that you enjoy and that won’t treat your community like shit.
