Red-headed Krait (Bungarus flaviceps) one of the highly venomous elapid snake that has awesome striking colouration. Red-headed kraits are nocturnal, semi-aquatic and inhabits rain forests in mountainous and hilly regions.

First time road cruising and our guide Steven spotted this beauty. Honestly, I was fighting not to fall asleep in the car, but that moment and their excitement woke me up. Good memory for our first road cruising :)

🦇Bat Fact! Do you know of the Black-Bearded Tomb Bat (Taphozous melanopogon)? This bat is named after the black fur under it’s chin, which appears in males around 5-6 months of age. This insectivorous microbat can be found in South and SE Asia from China to India, Sri Lanka to Thailand, to Malaysia and Vietnam and beyond! This bat is usually 9-10cm in size and can be found in colonies of up to 4000 (in Thailand)! This bat is listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN🦇

Pink-headed reed snake (Calamaria schlegeli)

The pink-headed reed snake is a species of snake in the family Colubridae.It is native to Southeast Asia, where it occurs in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.C. schlegeli lives in forest undergrowth. It sometimes emerges on paths and in yards and gardens. It burrows for cover and feeds on small prey such as worms and insects. It is nonvenomous.

Dog-toothed Cat Snake (Boiga cynodon), a both terrestrial and arboreal snake🐍 It can grow up to 2.8m in length. Nocturnal and preys mainly on small vertebrates like birds, their eggs and small mammals etc. Rear fanged and mildy venomous, it is normally found in mature forests. Elegant Bronzeback (Dendrelaphis formosus) one of the 6 bronzebacks in Singapore. First time seeing one in person :) Arboreal, diurnal snake that dwells in mature forest and feeds on geckos, skinks and frogs etc. Is has a distinctive large eye compared other bronzebacks. Its lateral black stripe extends along the snout which is one of the ways to differentiate it from Dendrelaphis cyanochloris. Had a good adventure and learnings that time thanks to cool friends.

Wagler’s Pot Vipers (Tropidolaemus wagleri) seen at Bukit Timah last Sunday, saw one female then one male and female. Females are larger, dark above with pale yellow bands and white spots. Males are smaller and green, red and white stripe on side of the head. Generally these Pit Vipers are seen resting on lowly lying vegetation’ arboreal and are venmonus. It was a good guided walk with the team HSS leading :)

Greater Mousedeer (Tragulus napu) :) this little mammal resting on the forest floor. A nocturnal animal, it forages at night for fallen fruits, shoots and other vegetation. It was rediscovered in Singapore, Pulau Ubin in 2008 where the first confirmed sighting was seen.

Gold-Ringed Cat Snake or Mangrove Snake (Bogia dendrophila) a nocturnal snake and largely arboreal. Distinct colors body black with a series of bright yellow bands. Thanks to my HSS friends for showing me. During the day, the snake can be found resting and coiled on branches near or overhanging water. This one was so high up and far away and difficult to take a photo 😂 Its diet includes lizards, birds and other small mammals.

Crab-eating Water Snake, (Fordonia leucobalia), Family Homalopsidae – a species of homalopsine snakes which are characterised by their valvular nostrils and reduced eyes as their habitat conditions are mostly muddy or turbid. The Crab-eating Water Snake is typically found in mangrove habitats and predator of the hard-shelled crabs and small fishes too. They strike the crab with a close mouth, pinning it down with its chin, neck etc then wrapping its body around the crab and bite it. Sometimes biting off the legs first before downing the whole crab. Got some photos of it wrapping its body around the crab though not so good quality 😅 Like other homalopsine snakes, is mildly venomously and rear-ranged.
