Mikey considered himself to be a fair and impartial leader. He was oftentimes quiet and kept to himself, allowing his men the opportunity to make their own decisions when dealing with the everyday happenings of Bonten. If it didn’t involve the organization’s finances or business prospects, then Mikey couldn’t care less, which was why he never paid attention to any of the frequent workplace drama and gossip around him. What he was currently seeing before him, though, he annoyingly couldn’t ignore. Mikey wasn’t the kind of person to concern himself with office romances and love affairs, and yet even he felt as if he had to say something.
Fleeting touches and subtle, wistful glances, all of which reminded him of the past when his sister would act the same way toward his best friend. It was the same, sickeningly sweet scenario being replayed over and over again in front of him, and Mikey was about to snap. Who even blushed like that after simply being given a spare pen? Kakucho, the idiot in love, that’s who. Mikey was tired, so very tired of you and Kakucho constantly walking this pretend line of friendship when there was clearly something more. If Kakucho wasn’t going to say anything to you, then Mikey would have to do it for him.
“Everyone, get out,” Mikey suddenly ordered before directing a glare at both you and Kakucho. “Except you two. You two are staying.”
“What’s the problem, Mikey?” Takeomi curiously asked, everyone wondering the same question.
“I can’t take this anyone,” Bonten’s leader stated as he motioned the other executives to begin leaving the room with him. “Those two need to sort out their feelings, Kakucho especially. I can’t hold a proper meeting in these conditions.”
“B-boss,” Kakucho nervously addressed while trying to avoid your questioning gaze. “You’re joking, right?”
“Do I ever joke?” Mikey replied with absolute monotone in his voice, gesturing everyone to start walking faster. There were a variety of different reactions as everyone passed by you and Kakucho, from Sanzu’s amusement to Koko’s exasperation to Mocchi’s clear sympathy. “You’re not leaving this room until you confess your feelings to each other. Until then, we’ll be waiting in the hallway.”
“And don’t forget our bet, gentlemen. I’m about to be ¥1,000,000 richer,” were the last, tauntings words from Ran before the sound of the closing door signalled to Kakucho that he was resigned to his fate.
Turning to you with a strained smile, Kakucho found himself struggling to say anything in response to what had happened. Despite being Bonten’s third-in-command and repeatedly dancing with death, the thought of confessing to you was honestly even more terrifying. In his moment of hopelessness, Kakucho couldn’t help but wonder what Izana would say if his cherished friend could see him now. Izana would’ve probably laughed and called him pathetic, lightly mocking Kakucho for not being able to admit his feelings to you. Unfortunately, Izana would’ve been right. He most definitely felt pathetic at the current moment.
“So,” Kakucho began awkwardly. “Lovely weather we’re having.”
“It’s been raining all day,” you absentmindedly retorted, looking adorable as you furrowed your eyebrows for a second in thought. “I suppose to some people, this would be considered lovely weather. In that case, yes, it is lovely today. It’s the perfect weather for an assassination.”
Hearing your comment, Kakucho had to quickly stop himself from chuckling out loud, not wanting to appear like he was insulting you with his loud laughter. “I-I guess you’re right-”
“Kakucho-san, do you like me?” you then interrupted, causing him to immediately freeze in panic as he desperately tried to think of a good answer. “Boss said that-”
“I-I do like you,” Kakucho hesitantly admitted, his voice sounding nervous and mumbled. Though, he was hoping that you wouldn’t be able to discern the truthfulness of his confession, as he was quick to add a few compliments in order to distract you. “Y-you’re a great colleague to have! I trust and respect you a lot.”
“But do you like me romantically?” you continued to interrogate, making Kakucho’s heart nearly come to a stop as he tried to appear unbothered by your questions. However, what you said next would render his efforts completely useless. “B-because I think that I like you.”
Shocked by your unexpected response, Kakucho was now left with a countless number of thoughts and questions that he wanted to ask you but was unable to properly articulate. You liked him? Since when? He was honestly not able to believe what he was hearing, and his expression of surprise only became more apparent as he took notice of your embarrassed, flustered face. So with a low, calming breath, Kakucho simply replied with, “Where is this coming from?”
“Well, Rindou-san had once asked how I would feel if you liked me, and I responded in a similar manner to you. Though, he looked almost sad to hear me say that,” you explained somberly. “I couldn’t understand why, but my teacher told me that it was because there was a chance you l-liked me r-romantically.”
And for a second there in his mind, Kakucho couldn’t help but want to violently murder Rindou. Yet he remained silent, with a harsh blush colouring his face, as he continued to listen to you speak.
“At first, I was confused, and my chest began to tighten. There was no real pain, but I had never felt anything like that before. My teacher says that it’s because I-I like you, too. I-I don’t really know what it means to like someone romantically, b-but I do know that I enjoy being with you, more than anyone else, so I was wondering if-”
“Can I kiss you?” Kakucho interrupted with a love-drunk smile, finding it difficult to hold back his feelings anymore as you soon agreed to him with an uncharacteristically timid nod.
That was all the confirmation Kakucho needed before he kissed you with the gentle grace of a kind and considerate lover, attempting to be mindful of your clumsiness and clear lack of experience. Your movements were shy and hesitant, causing him to smile into the kiss when he realized that you were being careful to not let your romantic inexperience ruin this moment with him. It was a cute gesture, and Kakucho soon broke away to hold the side of your face, his thumb dancing along your cheek in order to wordlessly reassure you that you could do no wrong. Seeing your handsome, appreciative smile, Kakucho prepared to kiss you again, only to stop when a familiar voice rang out.
“Guys? It’s gotten real quiet in here,” Sanzu loudly mused from the hallway, making Kakucho frown as the two of you shared a disappointed yet understanding look. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, we’re good,” Kakucho answered as Sanzu proceeded to open the door with a teasing grin on his face.
“Oh, I bet you are,” he remarked with a playful wink, to which Kakucho could only respond with a flustered and unamused glare.
After a few more teasing comments from Bonten’s second-in-command, everyone soon seated themselves around the conference table once more, the prior meeting quickly resuming as if nothing had happened. However, the affectionate look in both your and Kakucho’s eyes clearly told everyone what they wanted to know, and Mikey couldn’t help but let out an exasperated sigh of relief. Finally, some peace and quiet.
