"Countdown" is a slice-of-life inspired by "Gilmore Girls," and is rated 18+.

Three months ago, life took a sharp turn. Your mother found herself entangled in a situation so bad, she couldn't dig her way out of it, like usual. This time, the hole was way too deep. She needed help, and the only people capable of aiding her were the same ones she had vowed never to allow back into her life, let alone introduce to you and your younger sibling.

Who were they?

Your grandparents—a powerful and well-established duo.

In short, they did manage to help your mother back on her feet, but not without strings attached—never without strings.

Now, you're facing a senior year in a private school, fully funded by none other than grandma and grandpa, dearest. The only task at hand: do what your mother couldn't—graduate.

Form relationships, pursue your passions, burn bridges etc.,—the decision is entirely up to you.

Casey Decker (m/f) 🍁 [profile page]

Your friendship goes way back to the nappy days. With both of your mothers on the younger end of the spectrum, it’s no surprise you grew to be close too—'best friends' type of close.

Casey is a ray of sunshine, full of life, and quite possibly the jelly to your peanut butter. They’re sweet like that—they can be, at least. But best friends should be just that: best friends. Besides, as of recently, Casey is taken.

Appearance: Medium-length, straight, golden blond hair covers the nape of their neck. They have slightly tanned skin, a sprinkle of freckles across their nose and cheeks, and grey eyes.

Lake Aydin (m/f) 🍁 [profile page]

Lake has just started working at the grocery store nearby your house. High-school dropout, you assume. They don’t talk much…to you. Kind of a mystery, that one. Their social media confirms just that—there's not much to go by.

Also, your first meeting wasn't the greatest or smoothest. But one thing's for sure: you'll be around there a lot, so you might as well get talking in the meantime, right?

Appearance: Dark brown eyes, pale skin, and short, straight black hair for m!L. For f!L, it's medium-length black hair. They wear glasses whenever they remember.

Harry/Hallie Johnson (m/f) 🍁 [profile page]

H doesn't actually go to your school, but events are often organised as a collaboration between a handful of private schools, both of yours included. So yeah, you might see them around.

H is good at all of that—the networking, the galas, the fundraising, and public speaking part. They know what they want, and they have a resume to show for it. H is CC—charismatic and confident. They're who parents wish their kids would bring home, so needless to say, they've got your grandparents' stamp of approval.

Appearance: Deep brown skin, short tightly curled black hair for m!H, and a little longer than shoulder-length, tightly curled black hair for f!H. They have light brown eyes.

Santiago/Samara Garcia (m/f) 🍁 [profile page]

S is an academic with tunnel vision for success. They're consistently at the top of the class, leading the ranks, and on a mission to become valedictorian.

What sets S apart from the majority, you might ask? They're one of the only two people who got into the private school solely based on merit. No mommy's or daddy's money, none of that. It's all about brains and drive.

And what about you? Are you a high achiever? If yes, expect a somewhat healthy rivalry. Heads up, though—S doesn't fail. If no, they'll look down on you, and they won't make any effort to hide that. It's a double-edged sword.

Appearance: They have wavy brunette, borderline black, nearly shoulder-length hair, tan skin, and hazel eyes. They also have three beauty marks: one above their left eyebrow, one right below the left corner of their lip, and one on the tip of their nose.

Riven/Raven Rodrigo (m/f) 🍁 [profile page]

R is destined to be a superstar. Three years ago, R and 3 of their friends formed a band called 'Crimson Haze,' and it seems like all their hard work has finally paid off this summer. They've had a couple of gigs overseas, and they've done really well. They're on their way to major stardom, but first, they need to figure out a few things. Something's missing—perhaps a fifth and final member?

R is a passionate musician, a reckless friend, and a nonchalant lover. Music is their life. However, their love life is...unsteady. They don't do distractions, aka relationships; only fun.

Appearance: They have dyed jet-black hair, short messy waves for m!R, and long messy waves for f!R. They also have amber eyes and olive skin.

Nolan/Naya Brown (m/f) 🍁 [profile page]

N is the star athlete and the school's pride and joy. They have a lot of eyes on them, watching and expecting big things to come. On the court, they're a beast, but in class? Not so much. Their grades are below average, and if they want to keep competing for that full-ride scholarship, they need to bring their grades all the way up.

N is a typical cool and popular kid—playful, funny, and well-liked around the school. Whether they remember it or not, you share a history. You used to know N. FYI, they've been in a committed relationship for the past two and a half years.

Appearance: They have light brown skin in the winter and medium-brown skin in the summer. Their hair is dark brown, with short and loosely curled hair for m!N, and long and loosely curled dark hair for f!N.

Who is.....Jonothan Starsmore | Chamber? - A Reading Guide

Jonothan "Jono" Starsmore is an X-Men affiliated mutant from Marvel comics first introduced in 1994. A native of London and explicitly connected to the grunge scene, Jono has always been the pinnacle of the "bad boy with a heart of gold" trope- the only difference being that in place of a heart he has a furnace of psionic energy. Jono is best known for being part of Generation X (the team he was introduced with) but has also been an official member of the X-Men. The manifestation of his powers left him disfigured and destroyed many of his internal organs as well as his jaw, leaving him unable to speak verbally, requiring him to utilize his psionic abilities to communicate telepathically. Jono's story chronicles one of self-acceptance and is one I'd highly recommend!

If you've taken a look at my David Haller Reading List you'll see this event explained as "David’s desire to be loved forces him to grapple with reality," and as a story that "places David in a role where he has to choose between a false universe where he is considered a beloved hero and reality where he must choose to be a hero despite the fear others feel about him." Malekith additionally began assembling a league of allies from across the Ten Realms, eventually forming the Dark Council which included among its ranks Dario Agger, King Laufey and Loki. If this doesn't sound like an X-Men plot that's because it's not, but the X-Men sure did get a tie-in and Jono's in it.

IN WHICH ✶ — Rumors about Y/n pursuing a Zerobaseone member backstage at music bank start floating around the media after she and ZB1 member, Kim Gyuvin are seen talking behind in one of the episodes of ‘Eunchaes Star Diary’. Some netizens believe it and some don’t, some hated her for touching his shoulder and some didn’t care. Y/n went live to debunk the rumors, saying she wasn’t interested in a relationship at the time. The thing was, the rumors were true. She secretly was pursing Kim Gyuvin, or at least she wanted to. Ever since she first saw him backstage at M Countdown when ‘Love Killa’ team got to perform she was starstruck. She saw him at the vending machine and wished him luck in ‘Boys Planet’. She actually never had watched an episode of the survival show at all, she said it would be too painful for her, but that was the night she started to watch and most importantly, vote for Kim Gyuvin.

Y/n posed for her fansites, putting on different kinds of cute headbands and staring into different cameras. She liked talking and meeting her fans, but found fansigns a bit tiring and draining, she couldn’t wait to go back to their dorms. Especially since some of her fans would have weird requests.

“Good luck on your exams, oppa!” Y/n said as she handed the now signed album back to her fan. “Hi!” Y/n waved as the next fan moved to sit in front of her. “You’re so fake, acting all nice. I know in reality you’re just a pick me, sucking up to every man you know, even your fans.” The “fan” said even more before Y/n could even process what was happening.

“I’m sorry, what?” Y/n bursted out laughing, the event manager walked over as soon as she heard the other raise her voice at the idol. “You heard me, you’re a pick me slut.” The “fan” crossed her arms.

“Excuse me—.”

“No, it’s fine. Let me talk to her.” Y/n cut the manager off, wanting to speak to the girl. “You’re rev, right? user gyuvinate? I think you’re so funny, buying our albums, getting into a fansign, just to insult and cuss me out.”

“Let me see your album, let me do you a favor.” Y/n grabbed the album from the girl's hands, not caring about her response. “Here, you’re welcome.” Y/n crossed her face out of the album and handed it back to her. “Surprised you didn’t do it yourself.” Y/n laughed. “Have a nice day, I can’t wait to see you tweet about me and then waste your hard earned money trying to get into events just to cuss me out.” Y/n smiled at the girl.

"Now ain't this something beautiful," Arthur commented as he and (Y/N) walked through the doors of the banquet hall.

"Says the person who didn't even want to join me tonight," (Y/N) responded to his statement with a giggle.

"I didn't," Arthur didn't bother to stray away from his previous feelings towards this event, "but now that I'm here...it sure is beautiful," he brought them back around to the initial comment.

"It is," (Y/N) had to agree with him, smiling as he offered her his arm so that he could escort her into the ballroom.

Tonight was the night of the Birmingham Women's Social Club's annual holiday party. Sarah, the appointed president, and the rest of the planning committee had put in a lot of hours of work in order to get this ordinary banquet hall to look like it was straight from some holiday catalog. Garland was wrapped everywhere, festive centerpieces were placed on the tables, and there was a large, beautifully decorated tree standing in the corner of the room.

"'M startin' to feel a little out of place," Arthur commented as they walked further into the party.

"You fit in just fine," (Y/N) assured him, patting his arm as they made their way over to the table they were assigned to. Just as they were going to sit, (Y/N) made eye contact with two of her friends, Lindy and Charlotte, who both had excited expressions on their faces. She knew that they'd want to talk to her. "Can you go and get us something to drink?" she asked Arthur, hoping that she could get him away before the ladies swooped in.

"Absolutely," he sounded relieved at the mention of something that was familiar to him, "I'll be right back," he smiled at her before he left her side.

Like (Y/N) predicted, Lindy and Charlotte were by her side moments later. "You brought him?!" Lindy was the first to speak up. (Y/N) instantly knew that she meant Arthur.

"It took some convincing, but I managed to get him to come," (Y/N) answered, a smile on her face. These girls have known about her crush on Arthur for some time now, and they were her biggest coaches when it came to getting her to admit her feelings to him.

"I bet he took one look at you in that dress and was all in," Charlotte said, a grin on her face. Her words made (Y/N)'s cheeks heat up.

"Stop it," (Y/N) brushed her friend's statement off, looking away from her.

"Look, you've gotta make your move tonight," Charlotte got back to business, her eyes telling (Y/N) that she meant what she was saying.

"Oh, I don't know..."

"No. No ‘I don't knows’. We're not letting you leave this party without admitting your feelings to that man," Lindy doubled down on Charlotte's words.

"That idea is absurd. He probably won't feel the same anyways," (Y/N) was still against it.

"Feel the same about what?" Arthur's voice came from behind (Y/N), almost making her jump out of her heels.

"N-nothing. I just um..." she rushed to cover up their conversation, quickly turning into a stuttering mess.

"Hi, Arthur," Charlotte greeted him, a smile on her face as she tried not to giggle at (Y/N)'s reactions. She had it bad for him...it was so easy to see. Lindy then echoed the greeting, stifling her laughter as well.

"Hello, ladies," he greeted both of them, "beautiful party you've got going on here," he then commented on the event while side-eyeing (Y/N). She was still standing stiff in her spot, looking like she was having an internal war.

"I know, it's so lovely," Lindy agreed, a smile on her face.

"We'll let you two be," Charlotte spoke up then, "see you around," she added, her eyes lingering on (Y/N), who was still trying to think of a way to get out of this bind smoothly.

The two women left then, and Arthur finally turned to (Y/N) with her drink in his hand. "Not sure if you'll like this, but it was the only thing that was remotely close to what you normally drink," he told her. (Y/N) nodded as she accepted the drink.

"Thank you, Arthur," she smiled as she took a sip, "it's not too bad," she told him then.

"Success," he grinned, taking a drink from his glass. "So what do we do at these types of things?"

"We go and mingle," (Y/N) responded nonchalantly, sipping on her drink again.

"Well let's get to it then, eh?" he suggested, his eyebrows raised. (Y/N) agreed with him, and the two decided to abandon their table for the crowds of other guests.

After an entire night of dancing and mingling, the party was finally winding down. Arthur and (Y/N) were about ready to leave, but not before Charlotte pulled (Y/N) off to the side.

"What, Char?" (Y/N) asked, her brows furrowed.

"Make sure you and Arthur go out that door," she said, pointing to the door she was referring to then.

"Why?" (Y/N)'s eyebrows were raised now.

"There's mistletoe," she told her, pointing again.

"And you think Arthur's gonna wanna kiss me?"

"Well why wouldn't he?" Charlotte countered. (Y/N) pursed her lips. She wanted so badly to contest her friend's statement, but she knew that it would be no use. "Go on. Kiss that man," Charlotte said a few moments later, giving her friend a slight push in the direction of where Arthur was.

"You're the one to blame if this goes up in flames!" (Y/N) called out as she walked away.

"Ready to go?" Arthur asked once she got to his side.

"Yes. You?" (Y/N) asked him, a smile on her face. Arthur only nodded in response before offering her his arm. "Let's go out this way," she said then, nodding to the door that Charlotte had pointed out.

"Did you enjoy your night?" he asked as they walked.

"I did," she responded with a smile. Hopefully this doesn't change everything, she thought to herself as they neared the door. "Did you?" she turned the question back on him.

"I did," he echoed her response, a smile present on his face as well. He then opened the door for her, holding it as he motioned for her to exit first.

She took a step to the doorway before stopping in her tracks. "Arthur, look," she said, pointing to the little branch that was hanging above them.

"Well I'll be damned," he said with a laugh as he noticed the mistletoe hanging above them.

"I guess you know what happens next..." (Y/N) trailed off awkwardly, wanting to kick herself for how she was acting.

"I do," Arthur nodded as he turned to face her.

"You'd want to kiss me?" she couldn't stop the shock from entering her voice.

He looked at her like she was crazy. "Why wouldn't I? I'd be stupid to pass up on the chance to kiss such a pretty girl," he told her, his smile growing as he spoke.

"Wait, really?" she was still in shock, her mouth slightly agape before she shook her head and snapped herself out of it, "I'm going to kiss you before I say anything else stupid," she announced then before she stepped forward and placed her hands on his shoulders. He followed suit, fastening his hands to her waist as they leaned in and met in the middle, their lips pressing together in a sweet kiss.

“You should know that I feel the same way,” Arthur breathed after they pulled away.

“You do?” (Y/N) asked, surprise present in her voice.

“Yeah. Just didn’t know when the right time to admit it would be,” he explained the predicament he’d been in prior to their kiss.

“I guess this mistletoe was perfectly placed for the both of us then,” she stated, her comment making Arthur chuckle slightly.

“I guess so,” he agreed with her then, “would you do me the honor of joining me for dinner sometime soon?”

(Y/N) knew her answer in a heartbeat, “I’d love to,” she said with a wide smile.

Moxx can't stand cold temperatures, and much prefers to either be bundled up in soft fluffy coats and scarves, or to be out of the cold entirely with a nice warm cup of peppermint hot chocolate.

Preferred method of warming back up is cuddling with Millie under a massive mountain of blankets :-}

If it's not late, it's probably not me! Not for all things, but for a whole lot, so it's with my sincere apologies that I post this "Countdown to 2024" on the 9th day of the year!

Now, I'm going to be honest: I started to write this, and the list got huge. HUGE. And while I like to spread the love and be as inclusive as I possibly can, at some point, it began to look like an amalgamation of everything I've read in the year. So, I decided to scale back and follow the rules (gasp!) ... sort of... lol

See, I don't think writer appreciation should be limited to these events. Writer... creator... appreciation is a living, breathing act that should take place year-round. Each time you comment, share, or even leave a little ❤️ on a fic, you're showing your appreciation, gratitude and, honestly, you're serving yourself, because that simple act may be the very thing that tips the scale and makes your favorite say, "You know what, yeah! I'm going to keep doing this."

So, to every single writer in the fandom - thank you. I tried to show you love throughout 2023, and I hope to do more of that in 2024... you all mean so much to me!

But, I'm limiting this to three (and lawd that really was NOT easy) lol

When I closed my eyes and thought of the last year in fics, this is what came to my mind...

One...

@alj4890 - Seriously, I feel she is a writer who deserves so much more love than she gets. And, if y'all were smart, you'd take the time to change that in 2024! I love the passion that she has for every one of her pairings, even though she knows my favorite will always be Tobias x Chris (OH). Whether being light and witty or delving into deep emotion, your fics are always touching and beautifully written. I'm excited whenever I get a tag from you! Some of my favorites in 2023 were Visceral Reaction, Holding On, Nope (I had to give Trystan x Cameron some love, too!) and you know I was just crazy about The Wake. What a great concept! But I wouldn't be mad if you got back to Mixed Signals. Selfishly, I hope 2024 brings you more time to write, but honestly, I just hope it brings you joy!

Two...

2023 will always be the year that I fell in love with Crimes of Passion, and with that, I discovered another corner of our community and the many talented writers within it. I will forever bow to the queen of Crimes fics (yes, you @inlocusmads - there needs not to be a vote; it has been decreed! And New York, June 2014 was one of the first things that came to my mind when recalling this year's fics!) I got to learn about some writers I was not familiar with previously (shout out to @shreyamistry - your Trystan x M!MC Fanfic lives on in my mind, and I'm always hoping for a follow-up!) It gave me the opportunity to see some of my old favorites soar in a different place (hello @storyofmychoices @trappedinfanfiction and @lilyoffandoms - Lily, can we please have more Trystan x Gabriel all day every day??? PLEASE). And it did something I love more than anything: it allowed us all to see new creators step up and share their love and talent with us, and right now, I'm looking at @stars-are-within-me and @moominofthevalley Crimes wouldn't have been as enjoyable without you. @stars-are-within-me, I appreciated you taking the time to give us parts of the story that Pixelberry failed to address. In my opinion, the best was The Favorite Brother, and I may be a little biased, but I loved the beautiful trio of stories you wrote for me in the Secret Santa (Airport, Angel, and Cookies). You're so supportive of everyone, I'm so glad you're a part of our fandom! @moominofthevalley your writing is just beautiful, and I have found myself lost in your Trystan x Emily stories on so many occasions. It's hard to pick a favorite, but Heavy is Her Heart , The Girl With The Glass, and Turpentine stick out in my mind. You are masterful in conveying emotion, and these fics are perfect examples of that.

Three...

(You see how I cheated here, sort of? lol) I will never be able to look back on 2023 and NOT think of the hijinx of Ethan x Merida, Bryce x Olivia, and Tobias x Casey. They wouldn't have been possible if not for the vision and talent of the incomparable @lilyoffandoms and @storyofmychoices. Sure, "they" were born in the end of 2022, but they grew up in 2023! The way I smile when whenever I see a notification for another story with our babies! I love every single one of their shenanigans, but two that stand out to me were Mystery Unlocked by @storyofmychoices and When Husbands Become Prey by @lilyoffandoms (the way I CACKLED when I saw that title! lol). These six were a highlight of 2023, and I know there is much more to look forward to this year! Love you both, and love our babies!

And four... because I be like that lol

I can't not mention @mydemonsdrivealimo because 2023 was the year of Jensen in my book. And while I loved your works from earlier this year (looking at you Your Love and What I'm Becoming), I have to admit, Halloween owns me... and not jus because of the connection to Noah. lol Your descriptive writing and the way you convey painful emotions are just brilliant.

Thank you to each and every one of you for bringing a smile to our faces or tears to our eyes this year, and thank you for helping the fandom move along! ❤️

"Three! Two! One! Happy New Year!"

A cheer goes up from the living room. As you raise your champagne flute to your lips in celebration, you realize he's watching you again.

You knew this would happen. It's how it always goes at these events. Dark eyes inevitably finding yours across the room. Lips quirking, a half smirk, teasing you. Knowing you know what's on his mind. Because it's usually what's on yours.

Usually. But not tonight.

You take advantage of the crush of partygoers around you drunkenly butchering "Auld Lang Syne," and quickly disappear into the swaying crowd. The Jeons really outdid themselves tonight. It seems like half the town has gathered in their home to greet the new year.

Wandering into the kitchen, you spot your mother and Mrs. Jeon in deep conversation. Your mother sees you approaching and pulls you in for a big hug. "Happy New Year, darling!"

"Happy New Year," you mumble into her shoulder, and then it's Mrs. Jeon's turn to crush you close.

"We were just talking about our resolutions, dear," Mrs. Jeon informs you. "Do you have one?"

"I know what it should be," your mother interjects. "To give her wonderful mother her first grandbaby!"

The two women titter, the countless glasses of wine they've imbibed loosening their lips, and they begin to talk about you as if you're not there, lamenting how you just can't find the right man, how all your friends are happily married and popping out babies left and right while you just can't seem to catch up.

You just nod and smile. It's how it always goes at these events.

Mrs. Jeon picks up a magnum of wine to refill her goblet, gives it a shake, then tips it over. Empty. She shoots you a look. "Would you be a dear and bring us some more wine? There's another bottle of this vintage downstairs, back in - oh, you know where to look!"

You nod, already moving, opening the basement door, pretending you don't hear your mother whisper, "Don't worry, she can't find a man but she can find the wine!" to your retreating back.

Tucked into the far corner of the Jeons's basement is an impressive wine cellar, with hundreds of bottles displayed on shelves that stretch from floor to ceiling. Instead of grabbing a bottle and heading back to the kitchen, you linger, tracing your fingertips over the racks, lost in thought.

“You’re missing the party, Noona.”

Of course he found you. You turn around. “Just taking a little break, Jungkook-ah.”

He strolls out of the shadows wearing his usual grin. The revelry of the night is evident in his mussed hair and flushed cheeks. His black shirt is slightly unbuttoned, tie long gone, sleeves rolled up. Tattoos dance down his right forearm, piercings glitter in his eyebrow and lip.

He’s temptation itself. It’s how he always is at these events.

“I saw you during the countdown. No midnight kiss?” He’s still moving towards you, hands tucked into his pockets, crowding you into the tall shelves.

“Didn’t have anyone who wanted to.”

Even though he’s several years younger, he has an inch or two on you, head tipping down to gaze into your eyes. It’s strange how he’s always been able to make you feel so small like this. Delicate.

Needy.

“You know that’s not true,” he murmurs, thin fingers finding your hip, drawing circles there. His other hand tilts your chin. “All you ever have to do is ask.”

“I’ll remember that,” you begin, but the rest of your sentence is lost to Jungkook’s lips. He kisses you gently, pressing you into the rack behind you. Cold glass bites your skin where your dress fails to cover you.

His arms encircle your back, holding you tight. Your hands clutch at his broad chest, his wide shoulders, wrap themselves in his long hair, seeking purchase to steady you as the kiss deepens. When his hand slips down to your thigh, lifting it, opening you up to his straying fingers, you push him away.

“Jungkook,” you whisper, chest heaving. “Stop. We can’t.”

“Can’t what?” He drops his mouth to your ear, nuzzles the sensitive skin behind it. It’s your weak spot. A fact he knows all too well, as he shamelessly attempts to exploit it.

“We can’t do this, with everyone upstairs…”

The smirk on his face electrifies you more than you’d like to admit. “Why not? That’s never stopped us before.”

That was the old you. The one you left behind when the clock struck midnight.

He’s moved on to your neck now, insistent nips urging you to reconsider. “Are you worried because they’re waiting for you? They’re already drunk. They won’t notice if you’re gone for ten minutes.” You moan as he sucks on a particularly sharp bite, and he rolls his hips into yours, letting you feel how hard he is. “I can make you come in five, though.”

From anyone else, that would sound like a laughable brag. From him, it’s merely the truth.

“No, that’s not it. It’s just that I’m starting over today.” You untangle yourself from his embrace and turn your back to him, scanning the collection behind you for the vintage his mother requested.

“Ah. New year, new you?”

“Something like that.”

“Too bad. I like old you.”

You locate the desired bottle and pull it from the shelf. “Yeah, well, say goodbye, because she’s gone now.” When you spin around again, there’s a familiar glint in his brown eyes. A spark waiting to ignite.

“That’s a shame. I was hoping she’d come home with me tonight.”

Old you definitely would have.

“Sorry, Kook-ah. It’s time for a change.”

You take a step forward, but he doesn’t move. Frowning, you nudge him with your elbow, but he won’t budge. You know better than to bother pushing his stubborn ass out of the way. He might not be hulking, but he’s very solidly built. “C’mon, Jungkook, let me by!”

Instead, he pries the wine from your hands, gingerly placing it back on the rack. He cages you in, one hand on either side of your head as you peer up at him in shock. “Noona. I know why you’re doing this.”

He was always too perceptive for your liking. “You don’t know, Jungkook. You can’t. You’re still young.” He doesn’t have to worry about the things you do. Not yet.

He winces slightly, but sets his mouth in a firm line. “I’m not that much younger than you.”

“Six years - “

“Is nothing, a - a blip in the entirety of existence, Noona,” he declares emphatically. You don’t respond, your heart nearly beating out of your chest. The intense look on his face isn’t entirely new to you. You’ve spent many nights underneath him, watching that same expression as he brings you to the edge over and over. But you’ve never seen it in this light.

It takes your breath away.

Jungkook shakes his head. “You always talk like there’s some giant gap between us. Not just age, but everything. Like we live in different worlds. But I understand more than you think. I know what everyone upstairs expects of you.” He sighs, eyes softening as he smiles sadly at you. “I just don’t know why that means things have to change.”

Your hands flex at your sides, fingers curling into fists. “If you know what’s expected of me, then you should understand. I’m getting older, Jungkook. The pressure is on and it’s getting worse day by day. So I need to start over, as someone else. Because no one wants me as I am. As I’ve been.”

Something flashes across Jungkook’s face, something dark that makes your pounding heart stutter, and as his left hand cups your cheek, you can’t look away. “You know that’s not true.”

“Kook-ah - “

“I know you don’t take me seriously. That’s why you’ve always treated this,” he gestures between you, “this thing we have as some sort of fling. And I’ve been okay with it. Because even if I only get to be with you for a night, at least I still get to be with you.”

His words hang in the air as he pauses for breath. Gently, you press your palms to his chest. His heart is hammering just as fast as your own, the rhythm speaking just as loud as words.

“Kook-ah, since I was little, I’ve known the path my life would take. Every milestone laid out in a perfect line, point to point. I can’t stray from the path for things like ‘want.’”

“Why not?” His question catches you off guard.

“What?”

“Why can’t you? It’s your life, Noona. You should be able to live it as you choose. And do whatever you want.”

You scoff. “You make it sound so easy.” You dig into the soft silk of his shirt, twisting the fabric between your fingertips.

“It could be. We could do it together.” He smiles as you look up at him in surprise. “We could just say fuck it and do what we want. Which for me, would be to be with you.” He peels your hand from his shirt. You stare at the way his inked fingers entwine with yours. “What do you want, Noona?”

What you need is to think. But that’s not the question.

There’s too much to consider. How can you possibly decide anything so important, anything potentially life-altering, while standing in a basement at a New Year’s Eve party? So you narrow it down. Right here, right now, with Jungkook’s hand in yours, his bright eyes shining as he waits for your answer, what do you want most?

That’s easy.

Brushing your thumb across his cheek, you tell him, “What I want is for you to take me home.”

His eyes widen for a second before he snaps into action, covering your body with his own as he kisses you fervently. When he pulls away, he finally moves aside to let you pass. “You go first. Say your goodbyes. I’ll leave in a few minutes and meet you at your place.”

Grabbing the wine again, you take a few steps, then stop. New year, new you.

Maybe new you can have him for real.

You hold out your hand.

Jungkook glances from your hand to your face and back. Then he grins, strong fingers enveloping your own, and follows you up the stairs. There will be questions, and comments, and so much more to deal with tomorrow. But tonight, you don’t care.

The warmth radiating from Jungkook as he squeezes your hand flows through you, driving all your fears away.

It’s how it always goes.
