"FAMILIES BELONG TOGETHER, NOT IN CAGES"
by Artes Ekeko
A three-decade-old idea that "art ignites change" has led Philadelphia's @MuralArts program to a position of prominence in connecting artists and communities, but in 2018 the @_PhillyInquirer_ reported that Mural Arts may have sponsored its first project that "will double as a protest sign." In reaction to family separation policies and to promote Philadelphia's "sanctuary" status, Chilean artist Ian Pierce, aka Artes Ekeko, was asked to create this wall on Front St in the heavily Puerto Rican and Dominican neighborhood of Fairhill. Muralist, fine artist, and illustrator Ekeko describes himself as a wandering artist spreading a message of "passion, beauty, and wonder." Of his work in Philly Ekeko said, "I think murals are important political instruments. They are ways to speak about things that hurt. They create hope."  @ArtesEkeko

The detention of migrant children is ongoing, and outlets shouldn’t let it disappear from the media narrative.

Children... babies... kids... toddlers... teens... adults... mothers... fathers... men... women... brothers... sisters... daughters... sons... migrants... refugees... asylum seekers... No matter the label... They are all still HUMAN BEINGS! Y’all gonna #vote now? I’m just asking for the rest of #humanity!!!! ————————————- #Repost @theatlantic with @get_repost ・・・ Lawyers who visited a detention facility at the U.S.-Mexico border this week have reported that babies and toddlers are being left in the care of slightly older children. The older children are taking on responsibilities such as bathing, feeding, rocking, and holding the younger ones. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “These children have taken on parental duties at an inappropriate age not because their parents or other guardians have been neglectful, but because they were, in many cases, forcefully removed from their parents or guardians by a government aiming to “send a message” to immigrants entering the country,” Ashley Fetters writes. “Many of the children being detained came across the border with adults who would care for and comfort these children if only they hadn’t been separated under this policy.” Read more on the psychological impact of children caring for children at the link in our bio. 📷 : Gregory Bull / AP #border #immigration #familyseparation https://www.instagram.com/p/BzIQke8BlNM/?igshid=1idhsbsvvzh63

This short documentary shows the pain and difficulty imposed on asylum-seeking families divided by the US immigration system. After fleeing their home country of Honduras to seek safety in the US, an Afro-Latino family finds themselves separated by immigration enforcement, unsure of each other’s whereabouts and well-being for many months. Through the perspective of a mother, a father, and their young son, the film shows the agony of family separation for the whole family system. This emotional story offers perspective on the ways that inhumane immigration policies impact immigrant families and highlights the need to keep families together. By Isabel Castro, 2019. Length: 15:33, available on NY Times Op-Docs: https://www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000006430547/darlin.html?playlistId=video/op-docs . . . . #immigration #AfroLatino #Honduras #asylum #immigrant #familyseparation #documentaryshort #socialworkonscreen #socialwork #socialworker #socialworkers #socialjustice #mentalhealth #lmsw #lcsw #therapist #msw #bsw #therapy #socialworklife #socialworkerlife #socialwelfare #socialpolicy #macrosw #macrosocialwork #mswcareers #professorsofinstagram #highered #mswstudent #socialworkstudent https://www.instagram.com/p/CNnwM_6jes7/?igshid=9dw7jhhby9ry

Please help keep families together
Please help in the fight against Trump's border policies. These separate families at the border and keep children as young as 8 MONTHS detained in cages. Those same policies then prevent re-unification of families by sending parents home and keeping children detained in the US.
There is harrowing, heartbreaking footage out there showing toddlers crying for their mothers, and reports of children trying to play in cages without books or toys, being told to "settle down" by border guards. These reports have had me in tears.
This is a blatant humanitarian outrage and we cannot stand by and do nothing.
I've chosen to donate to the ACLU in their legal fight to contest ICE, but there are loads of other charities out there who could use your financial aid. These organisations provide legal aid, interpreters, shelter and general support to families who are in dire need of help. Click here to find them!
I know not everyone is in a financial position to be able to contribute, but just helping to spread the word helps!
