Shape-shifters, face-blindness, and "paying attention to others"
The shapeshifter is one of my favourite "monster of the week" episodes because it showcases how differently Laios processes social information than the rest of the party. It reminds me a lot of the strategies I, faceblind name-forgetter and eye-contact avoider, use to recognize people and learn things about them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see Laios clearly fail at recognizing the doubles through "standard" social cues that are perceived as "easy to tell", such as their clothes. This makes the team (unfairly, but understandably) weary of his ability to tell the fakes apart and even worried that he'd prefer the monster versions* over them. Nonetheless, he gives it a try!
...And is immediately overwhelmed. His lack of attention to social cues works a bit in his favor, though, as it makes it harder for him to fall for stereotypes that fool the rest of the group.
Tumblr media
Instead, he chooses to rely on his strengths and use his investigation and animal handling skills to distract the shapeshifters, lure out the monster, and roll the most insane balls-to-the-wall intimidation check of all time.
Tumblr media
If it had ended there it still would have been a great episode that showcases Laios' strategic mind and his strengths as a leader. He doesn't have the social skills necessary for the task, but he is clever and creative enough to use the skills he does have proficiency in to solve the problem*.
However, what makes this episode so dear and near to my faceblind heart is the revelation that Laios was able to recognize the real party members after all.
Tumblr media
Laios is fantastic representation of how special interests actually work for a monotropic interest system. Having a special interest is not just about how much you like it and the need to know everything about it, it's a way of processing and filtering information. Laios' special interest is monsters: his skills as a dungeoneer and party leader are acquired for and informed by his desire to interact with monsters, as is his interest in eating them. He actually brings this up himself when comparing his interest in cooking to Senshi's.
Tumblr media
And in this episode, we see that this also extends to his friends. Laios hacks one of the most difficult types of information for him to process by routing it through the lens of the special interest. And, because it's not something most people would notice, it works. He knows that Chilchuck wouldn't let his guard down around a potential mimic, that Senshi values a balanced ecosystem, that (my favourite) Marcille just isn't as thoughtful about monsters as he is.
Tumblr media
It might not be what was expected, but it did the trick! And what's more, the narrative validates his way of thinking (even if Chilchuck doesn't).

“My whole attitude is that, when you work – I try as best I can to pretend I haven’t done anything before, just so that I don’t compare it to anything, because nothing can be like the other thing before it.” — JASON SCHWARTZMAN (born June 26, 1980)

i’m catching up on tsv, i think something that eskew prod does extremely well is using horror absurdism to capture the absurd horror of capitalism. it’s clear in eskew too, but i think it’s especially fantastic in the silt verses. the casualness with which sacrifice is discussed. how red lobster has a god that has and continues to take human sacrifice, and so do cereal companies, cops, and the grueling start up that has a “fun room”. it captures EXTREMELY well how it feels to live under capitalism, that you’re constantly bombarded with horrible things, discussed cheerily in a nice tone. the way it’s simultaneously numbing, hysterical, and horrifying. i think i was especially fond of how in ep 39, protest against sacrifice was taken as radical, a propostorus, idealistic thing that’s just so SILLY it’s not even worth considering, something that feels very real to revolutionary organizing/protest irl. i also liked how despite the face, when everything gets down to it, when everything is about profit, all people come down to are bodies. all capitalism is a gaping maw, and it eats the poor and marginalized first, but doesn’t STOP eating just there. the very literalized version of this, where the profit wheel (and all that includes— war mongering, the prison industrial complex, wage labor, etc) is given a very real literal set of teeth, but the body count is the same. so the electric company has a god, and so it takes humans sacrifice. do real electric companies not have a very real human cost? overworked and underpaid labors looking to make rent, or well off comfortable employees no less likely to get the axe under profit margins, or the blood shed when colonizing in the first place, in clearing the space for the electric company to move in. is that not also a very real human sacrifice? the commercial aimed at elderly people talking about “back in my day, we would just talk about all this human sacrifice and find a compromise :)” is so bleakly hysterical, but is that not very accurate? that you can put a good face on it, but in the end what it comes down to is that you’re being sold the chance to be human fodder? that there is no glory or honor on a battlefield or in working yourself to death, just mud and shit and bodies to throw at problems. idk! i’m rambling but it’s a deeply engaging podcast.

honestly this is the funniest possible way to bring charity back into the narrative. she's having an unrelated conversation in a bar, sees the plot walking in the door, and ditches her date without anything else said. masterful. wonderful. i hope she doesn't show up again and this is legitimately the last we see of her.

The dawn of November 1, 1945.
With the chaos of a recently graduated Tom Riddle sent out into the world, and the ministry breathing that much more down Albus Dumbledore's neck for the last few weeks after he'd been forced on "administrative leave" by the ministry while he was in their custody for the last several weeks, beaten and tortured until he gave into their demands to duel Gellert Grindelwald once more. He knew his husband's actions had grown more horrific over the years that even he could not ignore, and between that, the torture...
He had accepted.
The ministry was unaware of his possession of the resurrection stone, given to him by Flamel in case things turn for the worst in that duel. He's made enough potion to live out the next fifty years with himself and his wife- Should Albus not come home from this. Days before, he had sent out a letter. Part of him hoped it did not make it to him, or he would simply ignore his ridiculous quest for a final duel, to see who would finally come out on top. Or, in the ministries eyes.. If good would triumph over evil.
For the greater good.
Tumblr media
Days later, he had anxiously arrived at that location, dressed in his usual attire. His wand was grasped tightly in his hand, other shoved in his pocket, wrapped tightly around the stone in his pocket. He had used illusion charms to hide what a wreck he really looked like, after what the ministry had put him through for the last several weeks. In his weakened state he might've still been quite the formidable opponent- But the ministries underestimated Grindelwald when it came to Dumbledore. He truly didn't know who would triumph this time. He hoped so desperately that the letter had not made it, or he would refuse.
But when was luck ever on Albus Dumbledore's side? @magicblooms

A quick spoiler free review of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Well, pack it up, kids. We have ourselves a winner for Best Animated Movie Oscar already set in stone.
Seriously.
You know how the first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse was hailed as “groundbreaking” in animation? And it was rightly so? Yeah, the animators topped themselves with this one.
It’s not just gorgeous, not just amazing, not just fantastic, it’s...something you want to study. Like you are in an animation class want to study. And I am sure that future students will do so. The use of colors. The use of styles. The use of direction. I, personally, want to go scene by scene and even frame by frame just to learn from this movie. If this movie doesn’t get the Oscar it will be another case of Saving Private Ryan losing to Shakespeare in Love. An Oscar rob that will be talked about for decades to come. Honestly, I can’t see how this will lose. This is what Guillermo del Toro meant when he said, “Animation is not a genre for kids. It's a medium for art, it's a medium for film and I think animation should stay in the conversation.” This movie is the perfect example of this.
It’s also a movie that feels like it didn’t take inspiration from only other animated films but non-animated films as well as paintings. Impressionism plays a big chunk of this film. It’s beautiful in the way it uses that style, the color and messy shapes, to tell a story in a way that you couldn’t do in any other motion medium but animation. Again, you would have to look at paintings to find anything similar. You could not do this with live action.
The character designs! Spider-Punk is by far my favorite design of the new Spider-people. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you. This is indeed a spoiler free review. But, GOD, I love his design.
Now story-wise....it’s dense. Like, no, don’t run to the bathroom for a quick break or else you will miss out on a major scene because they are all major scenes dense. It’s a balance mixture of character and plot. So much so that I can’t say if it’s a movie where the plot drives the characters or the characters drive the plot. It’s indeed 50/50. It isn’t a spoiler that this movie is part one of a two parter. And it feels like it. Like you are on a rollercoaster just cranking, cranking, cranking up that hill and right as you hit that peak, BOOM! credits. Hence, I felt like a five year old at their birthday party eyeing that cake when the credits came. “Give it to me! Give it to me NOW!” I want the next movie NOW!
Though we will have to wait until March before we get that next slice...
