Fictober 2023_Prompt 21: “Just in case this doesn’t work.”

Summary: Stone finally tells Cassandra the truth.

Author’s note: I don’t think they ever revisited this issue in the series – at least not directly, so here I go.

Cassandra and Stone stumbled into the open doorway, kicking the door shut behind them. They wouldn’t have long before they were found, but it was clear Stone couldn’t keep up at this pace. “Just… just hang on , Jacob,” Cassandra said, trying to keep the panic out of her voice as she looked around the small room for something, anything that would help. “Eve and Jenkins will be here soon. We just have to hang on until then.”

“Cassandra.” Stone’s voice summoned her attention, and she saw the blood. She knew he’d been hit, but she hadn’t realized how badly. His hand, which he’d been clutching to his stomach, was covered in blood, and shaking badly. The stain on his stomach was spreading, and he staggered, falling to his knees. He would’ve collapsed completely if Cassandra hadn’t caught him.

“I’ve got you. I’ve got you, Jacob,” she said, her own voice trembling at this new discovery. His body fell back against her, and she wrapped her arms around him, cradling Stone as best she could. “It’s going to be okay,” she whispered against his temple. “It’s going to be okay.”

Stone coughed out a rough chuckle. “Y’know, Cass, I don’t think it is.” He shifted against her, closer into her hold. “Think this might be it.”

Cassandra shook her head fiercely. “No.” She said. “No.” Firmer this time. “They’ll find us. They’ll know what to do. They always do.” Her faith in Eve and Jenkins was unwavering, but her fear was consuming her as her hand grew more and more wet from his wound. “No.” She kissed his temple fiercely. “No. You’re my friend. I won’t let you.”

Stone grinned despite himself. “Not sure it works that way, Cass. So just in case - ,” he began.

“No,” she said firmly, shaking her head. She wouldn’t hear last words. Not now, not ever. Not unless they were hers.

Stone’s hands covered hers, squeezing as much as he could manage. Things were beginning to get fuzzy. “I need to tell you this. Just in case this doesn’t work… you need to know.” Cassandra took a shuddering breath, pressing her lips to his temple hard.

“Okay.”

“I need you to know… I trust you, Cassandra. I have for a long time, and I never told you. But I trust you, Cass.”

The tears she’d been fighting were blinding her now as she buried her face in his hair. She remembered the moment he told her he didn’t trust her all those years ago, and how it had crushed her. She’d deserved it, been devastated by it, and sworn she would redeem herself in his eyes one day.

One day. That day was here, and he was dying in her arms. She clutched him closer. She didn’t want to live in a world without Jacob, or Eve, or Jenkins, or Ezekiel, or Flynn. She’d waited her whole life for friends, for her tribe, her family, and she wasn’t going to give them up without a fight.

“I trust you, too, Jacob,” she said, her tears dampening his dark hair. “Jacob?” He’d grown silent, still. “Jacob? JACOB!” Cassandra screamed his name, sobbing as she clutched him closer still. Her pain, her sorrow and agony exploded in her chest, and she threw her head back, screaming to the worlds around her, seen and unseen, tangible and magical, willing it all, forcing it all out out out, begging and pleading and demanding. He would not die, he would not leave her, he would not leave them. She had power deep inside her, and she would use all of it to bring him back to her. Cassandra spilled everything she had out until she was empty and exhausted. Her body collapsed to the ground, taking Stone with her as darkness rushed up to meet her.

“Cassandra. Cassandra.” She felt gentle fingers brush against her forehead as her eyes fluttered open. Leaning over her with motherly concern was Colonel Eve Baird. “Shhhh. It’s okay. I’m here.”

Cassandra couldn’t move. Everything felt heavy and hollow. “Jacob,” she whispered, and Eve smiled.

“He’s safe. We’ve got him.”

Cassandra closed her eyes, a faint smile gracing her lips. Everything seemed to require so much energy, but that was fine. Eve was here. Jacob was safe, somehow, someway. She wouldn’t question her miracle – not right now, at least. Right now she’d drift back to sleep, happy and content.

UPIS “math-sayang” ipinagdiwang ang Math Week 2024

Nakilahok ang mga mag-aaral ng UP Integrated School (UPIS) mula sa Grado K-12 sa ginanap na Math Week noong Marso 12-15, 2024.

Ang tema ng pagdiriwang ngayong taon ay “Playing with Math,” na hango sa paggugunita sa International Day of Mathematics o ang Pi Day. Layunin ng programa na malinang ang kaalaman at kakayahan ng mga estudyante sa larangan ng Matematika.

Sa loob ng buong linggo, iba’t ibang mga laro, patimpalak, at aktibidad ang kolektibong inilunsad ng Departamento ng Matematika, Departamento ng K-2, at UPIS Math Club ng Grado 3-10.

Isa sa mga tampok na aktibidad para sa K-2 ay ang "Math Character Challenge” na naglalayong ipalaganap ang pagkamalikhain ng mga mag-aaral sa pagguhit ng sariling karakter batay sa mga konsepto sa Matematika. Gumuhit ang mga mag-aaral sa Kinder ng kanilang orihinal na superhero; lumikha naman ang mga estudyante sa Grado 1 ng isang poster na nagpapamalas ng kanilang karakter; at bumuo ang mga mag-aaral ng Grado 2 ng isang comic strip na pinagbibidahan ng kanilang mga karakter. Ang mga nagwagi sa bawat baitang ay sina Mireya Aria B. Rebuelta ng K-Dahlia, si Luke Ezekiel Z. Santos ng 1-Pipit, at si Natalie Aria A. Castillo ng 2-Dalandan.

Sa bawat araw ng linggo, isinagawa naman ang "Brain Teasers Challenge" para sa Grado 3-12. Layunin ng pagsasanay na itong hikayatin ang mga mag-aaral na gamitin at ipamalas ang kanilang natutunan sa iba’t ibang konsepto ng Matematika. Ang bawat pagsasanay ay isinagawa sa bawat baitang, at ang mga ito ay nakabatay sa antas ng kanilang mga natutunan sa asignatura.

Nagkaroon din ng “Math Game Center: Interactive Exhibit” na naglalaman ng iba’t ibang mga larong sumubok sa kakayahan ng mga estudyante sa bawat araw. Para sa 3-6, nagkaroon ng mga laro tulad ng Tangrams, Kendama, at Puzzle Rings. Samantala, para sa 7-12 naman, nagkaroon ng mga laro tulad ng Galton Board, Buffon’s Needles, at Matchstick Equation Game.

Bilang paggunita sa Pi Day noong ika-14 ng Marso, idinaos ang larong “Pi Hunt” sa UPIS 3-6 at 7-12. Dito, naghanap ang mga mag-aaral ng labinlimang baryang papel na nakatago sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng gusali, ngunit sampu lamang ang naglalaman ng mga numero na katumbas ng pi na 3.14. Upang matukoy kung aling mga papel ang may tamang halaga, kinailangan ng mga mag-aaral na sagutin at i-kompyut ang mga matematikang problema na nakasulat sa papel. Ang mga estudyanteng nakakuha ng halaga ng pi ay nakatanggap ng premyo.

Naglunsad din ang Math Club mula Grado 3-10 ng isang fundraising activity sa pamamagitan ng pagbebenta ng Pi Cupcakes sa halagang ₱30 bawat piraso. Ang proyektong ito ay naglalayong makalikom ng pondo para sa kanilang mga susunod na gawain.

Bilang bahagi ng paglikom ng pera, isinagawa ang aktibidad na “Guess the Number,” na bukas para sa buong K-12. Layunin ng aktibidad na hikayatin ang mga mag-aaral na tantiyahin at hulaan ang bilang ng pingpong balls (K-2), mga holen (3-6), o duck clips (7-12) na nakalagaymaaaring ilagay sa isang sisidlan. Ang mga mag-aaral ay inanyayahan na magsumite ng kanilang mga hula at magbayad ng ₱5 para rito.

Maliban sa mga gawaing face-to-face, inilunsad din ang “InstaMath” kung saan nagbahagi ang mga estudyante ng litratong may kaugnayan sa tema ng paglalaro kasama ng Matematika. Ang mga nanalo sa palaro ay sina Serena Indra Fe Lucila K. Lacaba ng K-Mirasol, Sofia Isabel Elena M. Romero ng 4-Patani, at Tobin Abram Y. Malonzo ng 8-Firefly.

Sa kabuuan ng Math Week, nagkaroon ang mga estudyante ng pagkakataon na manalo ng premyo mula sa paglahok sa pamamagitan ng pagkumpleto ng kanilang stamp card. Ito ay nagsilbing talaan ng mga sinalihang gawain, kung saan maaari silang magkamit ng karagdagang puntos o insentibo sa asignatura.

Inorganisa ang nakalipas na Math Week upang magkaroon ng mas interaktibong programa ng taon sa pamamagitan ng paglalaro. “Makikita ang matematika na hindi limitado sa usual classroom set-up at paper and pen, kung saan maraming mga laro na konektado pala sa matematika,” ipinahayag ni 3-6 Math Club Adviser Maesel Galapin mula sa isang panayam. Dagdag ni Bb. Galapin, kabilang din ang Departamento ng K-2 sa pagsusuri ng mga aktibidad para sa linggo.

Ayon naman kay 7-10 Math Club Adviser Joseph Guiao sa isa ring interbyu ukol sa pagbubuo ng selebrasyon, “Sa muling pagpapatakbo ng Math Club ngayong taon, kabilang ang mga miyembro ng 3-6 at 7-10 Math Club sa nagbigay ng konsepto para sa mga aktibidad. Sila ang nakipag-ugnayan sa Math Faculty para sa mga pangangailangan para sa Math Week, at naging kabilang sa mga mismong nagpaunlak at nakilahok rito.”

FE OC Week - Day 3 - Backstory

Okay, bit later than usual. I've been busy with work and other hectic stuff that have been happening today, but finally, it's time for the next prompt for @fe-oc-week. I realize that I may have backed myself into a corner with what I was talking about yesterday, but I'll do what I can to go along with what I have in mind. Apologies in advance if I end up sounding like a broken record, repeating what I've already talked about in previous days, but here we go.

Nick was born as the eldest son of Regis in 1162, after his elder sisters barely got the chance. With Matthew born just over a year later, the two brothers watched each other's backs both during their father's lessons in magic, with Nick specializing in Black Magic and Matthew in White, and in general. It wasn't long Nick's childhood that he began to notice something emanating from him. Regis realized what this meant; Nick bore a Crest.

When Regis found this out, he started giving Nick excruciatingly tougher lessons so that his Crest could awaken and he could lead House Umbris to a new age, knowing that he is the first male to bear the Crest. There was one issue though; Nick's Crest was fractured. No matter what Nick did, his Crest would not awaken. Beginning to doubt if it would happen, Nick begins to tire of his training.

After the Insurrection of the Seven, Regis has House Umbris cut ties with the Kingdom to fully support the Empire. Worried that the Kingdom would not forgive them because of this, and House Umbris wouldn't help them in their time of need, Nick tries to convince his father to repair relations with the Kingdom. However, Regis outright refuses his eldest son's requests at every turn, and leaves Nick's hopes just at that. Hopes. And little did Nick realise that his fears would come true. The Tragedy of Duscur.

When Nick found out about this, he was furious and confronted his father about how they did not come to the Kingdom's aid, but Regis was adamant and reprimanded Nick for not focusing on his training and aiding the Empire. A massive rift was formed between the two, and Nick started to shut himself away from his father. Eventually, when Nick wanted to forge a new relation with the Kingdom himself, in 1178, he ran away from home and stowed away to Fhirdiad.

Having come up with the alias "Ezekiel", Nick attended the School of Sorcery so that he can start gaining recognition and, when the time was right, reveal his intentions and try and bring House Umbris back into good terms with the Kingdom. He proves to be a quick learner and uses his knowledge in magic to assist his fellow students. The disguised noble gains popularity with everyone, but catches the wary eye of one student; Lorenz.

One day, the heir to House Glocester confronts "Ezekiel" about he is not who he says is and demands to know the truth. Nick is not the greatest when it comes to making up excuses, so he has no choice but to come clean to Lorenz and reveals who he truly is and what his intentions are for being so far from home, attending the School of Sorcery, and wishes to assist the Kingdom in what ever means necessary. Upon learning this, Lorenz comes to respect his fellow noble and vows to keep his identity a secret. Together, the two promise to assist each other with their magic training and work together as nobles to achieve their goals.

However, it wasn't meant to be. Matthew's intelligence gathering scouts, under Count Umbris' orders, eventually find out that their missing heir to the House is somewhere in Fhirdiad. Eventually, they realize that Nick is at the School of Sorcery. Worried that relations between House Umbris and the Kingdom of Faerghus would become even more strained, Nick decided to come forward and return home. Lorenz protests against his friend's decision to return home and abandon his goals, but Nick reaffirms that it isn't over yet and swears that they will meet again, and he will mend the strained relationship his father broke.

Nick returns home and begins his training with his father again, albeit excruciatingly more difficult to make up for lost time. Nick constantly wonders if this is worth anything, since his Crest would not awaken, and decides to just not worry about it and focus on his magic and newly acquired swordplay. Until one day, House Umbris gets quite the prestigious guest. The Imperial Princess, Edelgard von Hresvelg.

She visits the Count to acquire his House's aid for her ideals to come true in the future. Naturally, Regis agrees outright to help, so that they can help the Empire to be restored to it's former glory. Overseeing the conversation between their father and the Imperial Princess, the brothers wonder what's going on about the Edelgard's plans. While Matthew sets out his plan to find out, Nick falls head over heels for the Princess' charm, grace and beauty.

Regis realises that he may not be entirely needed for the future of House Umbris, and he introduces Edelgard to his two sons, feeling that they would be detrimental to her success. Meeting with Nick, she can clearly see that the future Count is put under strain from his father's faith in his fractured Crest. Edelgard promises him that the new world she is planning to build will not rely on Crests, and people will be free to do as they please, so long as they want to. Hearing this, Nick promises that he will do all he can to help Edelgard achieve her goals.

Upon learning that Edelgard will be attending the Officers' Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery the coming year, Nick asks his father if he can attend as well. With his hope to join back with the Kingdom, master his magic and swordplay, and to meet Edelgard again, Nick goes to the Officers' Academy and is placed in the Black Eagles House. Little did Nick know that what history had planned for him couldn't be farther from his goals.

Should the most faithful Christian church be supported through tithes and offerings? Is that biblical? What did the old WCG 'Tithing' booklet teach? Do you wish to be a sheep or goat according to Jesus' words in Matthew 25? Dr. Thiel addresses those issues and more in this sermon.

Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes [ISFJ] - The Defender

EZ Reyes has a beautiful mind and a beautiful heart, so why is he here? People are always telling him his future is brighter than anything Santo Padre could ever provide, and EZ has been conditioned to believe this. He spends most of the season vindicating this claim about himself so he can have a purpose after he finishes his ‘temporary’ run with the M.C. It’s not until late in the season that he starts to come to terms with where his mistakes have led him. When he ultimately chooses to stay and prospect for the Mayans M.C., it’s not submission to his underlying fear of worthlessness; rather, it’s about acceptance and control of his new, chosen path.

Strengths: sincere, generous, observant, patient, loyal, hard-working

Weaknesses: naïve, overloads himself, represses his feelings, reluctant to change, too self-sacrificing

For most of the first season, EZ lies to the club about his deal with the DEA out of self-preservation. But it’s important to remember that EZ signed the deal on the condition that it wouldn’t cause harm to his brother and the M.C. In one episode, we see that EZ is willing to go back to prison if it means Emily isn’t used as a pawn to get to her husband. So, while EZ takes the deal to get out of prison early for himself, he ultimately struggles to maintain his obligations to the DEA because he’s too selfless and too protective of so many relationships at one time. There are several points throughout the season when EZ neglects his personal needs in favour of serving or protecting others — whether or not he’s been directed to do so by his superiors.

EZ’s primary desire is to be of service to others — not necessarily to take on a provider role but to be a guardian to those who matter most in his life. When EZ cares for others, he listens, doesn’t make it about himself, and never seeks for anything in return. It doesn’t matter if one has a history with him (Emily) or if it’s someone he just met five minutes ago (Leticia), EZ’s empathetic and well-meaning nature drives him to help others. He’s so genuinely helpful and so invested in maintaining that reputation of reliability that he sometimes doesn’t realize how his well-intentioned actions can hurt him.

Angel said, “EZ’s special.” He doesn’t belong in Santo Padre and he uses that family dream projected onto EZ to push his brother out of the club and out of the “dead fucking town.” Naturally warm and caring, EZ has an uncanny ability to notice small details — facial expressions, looks exchanged between two people — that allows him to, not only figure people out but also, show people he cares about them in a meaningful way. When Emily comes to him because she’s a mess from losing her son and she’s feeling isolated by Miguel, EZ lets her in and he listens to her. When Leticia shows up and Coco can’t immediately be there for his daughter, EZ steps up and asks for nothing in return. Coco recognizes EZ’s gesture of goodwill and rewards him for it by opening up to the Prospect when he’s normally so guarded. This innate ability to seem trustworthy is ironic given EZ’s situation as an informant.

While it’s easy to notice EZ’s physical strength, there’s a quiet strength to him that shouldn’t go unnoticed. He doesn’t take crap from people even if they are authority figures; he has shown to answer back to law enforcement officers (Kevin and that off-duty cop at the casino) and Miguel. Often, when he bites back, it’s not even to defend himself but to defend groups that can’t speak for themselves in the moment (the M.C., the families victimized by the cartel). That being said, EZ also has a conventional approach to relationships — he understands his position in the club and respects the patch. While all prospects in the history of the Sutterverse have shown a degree of subservience to full-patch members, EZ displays a strong work ethic and never complains even when instructed to complete menial tasks (like recycling). He also shows a great deal of respect and reverence to his father, which can be attributed to him being the ‘good son’, but more interestingly it stems from his deference to traditional familial bonds. Yes, Felipe does take a liking to his second son, but EZ is also the son who frequently checks on his father and helps him out with chores that need to be done in the butcher shop. EZ doesn’t take his Pop’s favourable treatment for granted.

Functional Order: Si-Fe-Ti-Ne

His eidetic memory allows him to store data and information like no other character in the series. He’s able to take present conversations and images and contrast them with prior experiences, and we see that through the use of flashbacks. It’s important to note that these flashbacks are only from EZ’s point of view — it distinguishes him as the “gifted one”. These flashbacks are not only useful in terms of finding solutions to whatever problem he or the club might have, but it also emphasizes nostalgia as a driving force in his life.

Since introverted sensing is his strongest function, EZ is often seen expressing a great attention to detail in both past and present. His problem is that he has had a very clear picture of what his future would look like because of the way he senses his world around him; unfortunately, he cannot simply create his future the way he can recreate in his mind what has already happened. This makes his arrest and subsequent stint in Stockton even more heartbreaking because he’s the golden child of his town — a kid with so much promise — and he loses everything by making an uncharacteristically impulsive decision.

In the first couple episodes, EZ is seen using his gift to satisfy the needs of others. He remembers the BTT tattoo of the rival Samoan gang and gives away that information because he thinks it will help. He does the same when he tells Angel about the license plate in episode two — this time, finding a way to help Los Olvidados’ cause while still ensuring the safety of Emily’s child. Having an auxiliary Fe means he applies his understanding of a situation in a way that shows loyalty and dedication to the people that matter to him.

Tertiary Ti manifests when EZ steps away from his emotions and makes sense of things rationally. EZ has several moments when he lets nostalgic emotions get in the way of more immediate goals. He goes to the hospital to visit Emily even though he knows it would be a huge risk. He’s so hellbent on finding his mother’s killer, even going so far as to ask Angel for a gun, that he can’t foresee the consequences of vigilante justice.

A reluctance to try new ways of doing things and giving way to anxiety over the unknown can be attributed to an inferior Ne. At the start of the series, EZ’s mind is made up — he’ll fulfill his end of the deal (supply information on the cartel and only the cartel) and high-tail it out of Santo Padre. Prior to that, he was set on Stanford. He was set on the idea of becoming a self-made man with a legitimate career and a family with his high school sweetheart. When all of that goes to shit and he’s sidetracked to being an outlaw, EZ still sees it as a transitory move until he can focus all his energy back on clinching what he lost.

An immature inferior Ne manifests as a loss of control over facts and details, which then leads to impulsiveness and catastrophizing. As mentioned earlier, when EZ’s mom was killed, he was so rattled that he took all the ‘evidence’ he collected and directed it toward his pursuit of vengeance, resulting in him shooting a cop and ‘destroying’ his future. Eight years later, we see a maturity in this function when EZ makes the decision to remain a prospect for the M.C. and when he asks Bishop to replace Angel as his sponsor. While EZ reveals to Felipe his reservations to follow through with his brother’s request, he doesn’t consult anyone on this particular matter. He makes the choice to stay with the M.C. and switch his sponsor because it’s what he wants. He puts his wants and needs at the forefront. And although it deviates from his original plan, EZ has shown that he has finally gotten past the uncertainty and the fear of not living up to expectations and allowed himself to entertain the possibility of this new life.

La escena en sí es rara, no es congruente que Carol esté junto a su Daryl -quien supuestamente es solo su amigo-, mientras su novio/esposo está en la habitación.

Además, es curioso que ella no habla de sus sentimientos hacia Eze, solo dice que él le trata bien a comparación de Ed. Cada vez estoy más convencida que ella solo esta con Eze porque necesita afecto e intenta ser feliz, y él ''parece'' darle eso que ella necesita. Y probablemente, ella crea que Daryl no le quiere de esa forma.

A mi parecer, esta escena debe tener un motivo detrás, porque si no no es comprensible. Quizá el objetivo principal es hacernos ver los verdaderos sentimientos de ambos, porque las expresiones corporales de ambos dan a entender TODO lo contrario a sus palabras: Daryl no está contento por ella, se le ve resignado y triste. Y Carol como he dicho antes, no parece ser feliz del todo.

Otro hecho que llama la atención es que hayan anunciado la relación de E/C con una escena de Caryl. ¿No era más coherente publicar una escena de la pareja que supuestamente va a canon? Esto ya es bastante significativo. Aparte de que haya maldad en esto, sin duda da a entender que la relación de Ezekiel y Carol no es tan importante, ni para ellos ni para el público, sobre todo, si la han confirmado a dos meses del estreno, quitando el efecto de sorpresa a esta nueva pareja.

Hay algo detrás de todo esto; no quiero ser positiva, porque perdí la fe en TWD hace mucho tiempo, pero todo esto no es normal. Una posible teoría seria que precisamente el público piense que Caryl está muerto y enterrado, cuando realmente no lo está.

Desgraciadamente, la relación entre Eze y Carol rompe la magia, y si en algún momento se da Caryl, no tendrá el mismo efecto.

i had a little weinerschnitzel (the American fast food restaurant, not like, real food) for the first time in years, and oh man. i used to love that shit back in high school. eating it now? it’s so freaking fake, but i’m realizing that weinerschnitzel might be my go-to ‘fast food garbage craving’. like my other friends like carls’ jr. spicy chicken sandwiches (with sourdough bread and santa fe sauce), or chicken mcnuggets, or McRibs, and so on.

in other news, got to play in a game of Dungeon World for the first time. it’s refreshing to play an rpg with a system more focused on facilitating narrative rather than simulationist mathematical calculations. specifically, i played a monk I named El Generico Turnbuckle.

when you make a Monk in Dungeon World, you get to choose two martial arts styles, and give them names. the GM offered up examples like ‘Crane Fist’ and such. So I had a shit-eating grin when he looked over my sheet and saw that I’d written ‘Strong Style’ and ‘Lucha Libre’ for my two options.

El Generico Turnbuckle was a halfling luchador who used Airbending to propel himself into the air so that he could utilize his high-flying moveset even outside of the wrestling ring. In one session he accomplished the following feats:

1) Slept through the first round of the first combat encounter, proceeded to dropkick a flaming gnoll chieftain into an unlucky gnoll follower. Both ended up splattered against a tree. The other gnolls ran away in fear as El Generico (Elgen to his friends) did the Randy Orton pose.

2) Conspired with his Alchemist friend, Dr. Ezekiel, to use the doctor’s ability to create explosives to create a pyrotechnic entrance for his matches. Unfortunately no Bard to compose entrance music for him.

3) Leapt off a tree to one-shot a Dire Wolf with a Flying Elbow. One of its pups took exception (being a Dire Wolf, the pup was the size of a regular wolf) to the slaughtering of its mother, so after a brief back and forth sequence (Wolf bites Elgen in the leg! Elgen goes for a Jackknife Powerbomb! Wolf reverses the move, counters with face biting!) he puts it down with an overhead belly-to-belly suplex for the 3-count.

So one of the things I learned was how well-suited pro-wrestling is as a combat style for a character in a narrative-heavy game. Historically, tabletop rpgs have byzantine and unwieldy Grappling rules, not to mention they tend to be more about the realism behind grappling in combat.

But in a system like Dungeon World, all you’re really doing is attacking and then describing the same mechanical action in different ways each time--I hardly did anything complicated in combat, just ran up to the nearest enemy and did the most straightforwards attack. But the other thing is, the damage tags associated with the Monk’s fighting styles more or less account for the kind of status effects you might expect from Tornado DDTs and the like.

I contrast this with, for example, the FFG Warhammer 40k games, where a new player saying “i cut the Pillsbury Dough-king’s hand off at the wrist!” and as the GM I have to say “okay you want to spend a Full Action, forgoing the +10 benefit of a Half Action Aim, in addition to the +10 benefit from performing a Standard Attack, and instead make a Called Shot to the Left Arm as a Full Action at a -20 Weapon Skill test?”

so by this point i’m definitely interested in trying to learn to run Dungeon World games, particularly in the event that we can do a one-shot game, or to ease new players into the hobby of tabletop roleplaying games.

Responses of Solanum Lycopersicum to Organic Fertilizers Application

This study compares the effects of organic manure (Plants and animals) on the performance of Solanum lycopersicum L. The work was conducted at the Botanical nursery, behind the Botanical Garden, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. The study adopted Complete Randomized Block Design (CRBD) in 3 replicates. The treatments were animal manure of cow dung, poultry dung, rabbit dung and Plant manure of Gliricidia sepium. The plants characters measured include the leaf length, stem height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers and fruits. Data obtained were analyzed using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) while means were separated with Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Results obtained showed that growth characters (number of leaves, number of branches, stem height and leaf length) and yield characters (number of flowers and fruits in Tomato) were influenced by the plant manure of Gliricidia sepium and animal manures of rabbit droppings. From the results, it was observed that Gliricidia sepium and rabbit dropping were the best manures for the cultivation of tomato.

Introduction

Tomato, (Solanun lycopersicum) is one of the most important vegetable fruit crops grown in Nigeria whose production is widespread in the country with a total annual production of more than 145,000 tons [1] and it is cultivated mainly in rural and partly in Urban area [2]. It is a flowering plant of the night shade family (Solanaceae) that is cultivated extensively for its edible fruits. Almulla et al. [3] reported that there are over ten thousand (10,000) varieties of tomatoes.

Vegetables production in most parts of Africa, Nigeria inclusive, has been a backyard garden operation whereby farmers produce for their family. Because of increased demand for tomatoes, among other vegetables in Nigeria, for domestic and industrial uses, most small holder farmers have expanded and diversify vegetable production, resulting in increased cultivated hectares [4]. Tomato cul tivation in Nigeria covering mainly the coastal belt of the country up to the northern desert regions records yields of between 2.2 to 3.3 ha-1 [5] is far below the world average of 27.5 t ha-1. This low production of tomato in Nigeria is caused by salinity, drought, excessive heat, declining soil fertility, over cultivation, over grazing, desertification etc. [4]. In addition, this is related to incidences of pests and diseases, poor crop management and shortage or lack of well adapted and high yielding varieties.

Tomato plants have high requirement, they are heavy feeders, for macro nutrient elements, including potassium (k) and calcium (Ca) and some micronutrients such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and Zinc (Zn) [6]. A study by Hinman, Pressan & Sharp [7] revealed that without adequate supply of potassium and calcium for tomato plant uptake and utilization, tomato fruits will not accumulate soluble solids contents (Sugars) and will be susceptible to physiological disorders such as blossom end rot. According to Jones 2008, smaller requirements of the elements such as for dry matter portioning and fruit setting of the plants. Low soil fertility along with some of other environmental factors such as temperature, precipitation, humidity, solar radiation, wind is reported to affect tomato performance, hence its overall production [8]. And also, application of fertilizers as nutrient supplements is inevitably pertinent in increasing crop turnout in impoverished soils.

Tomatoes require a minimum of eight (8hrs) of continuous sunlight each day. It requires three to four months (3-4) of warm, clear, fairly dry weather to produce best. Tomatoes need consistent night temperature between 550F and 750F to set fruits. Fruit will not colour properly when night temperature stays above 850F and plant will quit growing when growing temperature go above 950F [4,9]. Tomatoes will thrive well on evenly moist, not too wet and not too dry. Too much water will drown the plant. Too little water will stop fruit production. Test the soil by sticking the finger into the soil and if it comes out wet, it does not require water. Prativa & Bhattara [10] reported that almost any type of soil will grow tomatoes, but sandy loam is best for early tomatoes while compost-amended clay is ideal for late tomatoes.

Tomato is a glossy red but sometimes yellow pulpy edible fruit with a lot of seeds. It is a very important function in the diet of man. Labeled as a vegetable for nutritional purposes, tomatoes are good source of vitamin C and the phytochemical lycopene [11]. The fruits are commonly eaten raw in salads, served as a cooked vegetable, used as an ingredient of various prepared dishes and pickled. Additionally, a large percentage of the world’s tomato crop is used for processing products which include canned tomatoes, tomato juice ketch up, paste and sun-dried tomatoes or dehydrated pulp [12].

Tomatoes are a good source of vitamin A, B, Potassium and vitamin C. which help the body to get rid of harmful free radicals and lowers cholesterol level in the blood which invariably prevent heart disease. Tomatoes are known to have a mineral called Chromium which works in keeping blood sugar in check. It also helps to improve the digestive system and the liver. Tomatoes are loaded with fiber which helps to prevent constipation [13]. The vitamin C in tomatoes controls the increase of stress hormones and helps the body to remain energized and healthy. Chlorogenic acid in tomato helps to protect the body form the adverse effects of cigarette smoke [14]. The lycopene in tomatoes is reported to control the growth of cancer cells especially prostate, stomach and colorectal cancer (Paswan, 2005). Tomatoes contain lycopene which is used for facial cleanser [15]. It cleanses and refreshes your skin and the vitamin A in tomatoes protects the hair from external damage. The vitamin K and calcium make the bone stay strong. The antioxidants present in tomatoes, are scientifically found to protect the body against cancer, including colon, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung and pancreatic tumors. Zeaxanthin, another flavonoid compound helps to protect eyes from age related disease in older adults by filtering harmful ultraviolet rays (Willer et al., 2005). These antioxidants also have anti-inflammatory effects on the body as it helps to fight inflammation throughout the body [16].

Organic manure can be applied to soils as compost or in their fresh state. According to Cambardella et al. [17], fresh organic materials contain higher inorganic nitrogen concentrations and have higher net nitrogen mineralization rates than composted manure. Paul & Beauchamp [18] reported that plants treated with organic manures exhibited higher dry matter in the first growing season than fresh manure. In Africa, animal manure is applied to the soil for fertility related issues and its benefits are well documented. Nutrient content in animal manure differs because of the variations in diets of the animals, collection and storage. Manure and other waste products of livestock have been used as soil amendments for decades and were the only ways of enhancing soil productivity before mineral fertilizers were invented [19]. Goat, sheep, cattle and chicken manure are the common manure, used in the southern African regions with cattle contributing two thirds of the total amount of manure found and the remainder is contributed by sheep and goat manure.

Use of organic manure at agronomic rate for plant nutrient supply and for beneficial effects on soil physical properties is a traditional agricultural practice (Haynes & Naidu, 2004). Over the last decade, the effects of organic manures on soil properties have received renewed attention due to an increased interest disposal of large amounts of waste being generated. Manure is a good source of macro and micronutrients [20]. Manure contains all nutrients that plants need and is high in potassium and relatively low in phosphorus and nitrogen which are the two most deficient nutrients in the soil [21].

Low yield of crop in most African countries was as a result of nutrient depletions, desertification caused by either climate change or deforestation, erosion, over cultivation, over grazing, etc.

This study aims at using ecologically friendly approach in enriching the soil and improving crop yield to combat hunger and starvation in Africa continent.

Materials and Method

This research was conducted at the Botanical Gardens, Biology Department, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Ogun State, South Western Nigeria located in a rain forest. Tomato seed obtained from the germplasm of National Centre for Genetics Resources and Biotechnology, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria (NAGRAB). Soil which was oven-dried was bagged in empty cement bags and was laid out in a completely randomized block design with three replicates. Treatments for this experiment consists of 100g of cow dung/bag, 100g of poultry manure/bag, 100g of rabbit droppings/ bag as animal manure and 500g of Gliricidia Sepium/bag as plant manure.

These treatments were buried in the respective bagged soil for two weeks before planting. Five seeds were planted per bag. This was thinned to one per bag at two weeks after emergence. The following growth and yield characters were measured in this experiment: Stem height, Leaf length, Number of leaves, Number of branches, Number of fruits and Number of flowers.

Data obtained from these parameters were analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) while means were separated with the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Results

Table 1 shows the growth influence of different organic fertilizers on the stem height of Solanum lycopersicum. At 2 weeks after planting (2WAP), it was observed that tomato plants treated with Gliricidia sepium had the highest value (40.7 cm) and the value was significantly different (p<0.05) from all other treatments while the tomato plants treated with the untreated plant (control) had the least value (10.1 cm). The low value observed for cow dung at this time may be that the plant is not fully adjusted or that the animal remains had not fully dissolve for absorption by the plants.

At 4 WAP, the tomato plants treated with Gliricidia sepium had the highest values (41.0 cm and for the plant height. This value was not significantly different (p<0.05) from those obtained from rabbit droppings-treated plants but was significantly different from all the other treatments. The untreated plants had the least values (16.3 cm). This trend was maintained at 6 WAP. But at 8 and 10 WAP, it was observed that tomato plants treated with rabbit droppings had the highest values (49.8 cm and 50.2 cm) respectively. It was worthy of note that these values were higher than all the other treatments. The untreated plants had the least values throughout the time of the experiment.

The number of branches of solanum lycopersicum plants treated with different organic fertilizers was as shown in Table 2. At 2 WAP, it was observed that tomato plants treated with Gliricidia sepium had the highest value (13.4) for the number of branches while the untreated tomato plants had the least values (4.20). At 4WAP, tomato plants treated with rabbit dropping had the highest value (16.6) for the number of branches while the untreated plants had the least value (6.6). At 6WAP tomato plants treated with Gliricidia sepium (GS) had the highest values (21.2) while the untreated plants had the least. Rabbit droppings (RD) enhanced higher number of branches (39.8) at 8WAP.

There were interesting results at 10WAP with GS treated plants having the highest number of branches which was significantly higher (p<0.05) than all the other treatments. Cow dung (CD) had fewer numbers of branches between weeks 2 and 8 (2-8WAP) but had higher number of branches at 10WAP. It was observed that all the organic manures positively enhanced the growth in tomatoes, even though they were not absorbed at the same rate.

Table 3 depicts the growth influence of different organic fertilizers on the leaf length of solanum lycopersicum. At 2WAP, it was observed that tomato plants treated with Gliricidia sepium had the highest value (5.78 cm) and it was significantly different (p<0.05) form all other treatments while the untreated (control) plants had the least value (4.7 cm). At 4WAP tomato plants treated with Glioricidia sepium had the highest values (5.8 cm) which was significantly different (p<0.05) from other treatments while the CD treated tomatoes had highest leave length (7.3 cm) at 6WAP but the value was not significantly different (p<0.05) from GS treated plants.

At 8 WAP, tomato plants treated with poultry manure (PM) had the highest values (9.0 cm), this was not significantly different from RD treated plants but both were significantly different (p<0.05) from all the other treatments, while the untreated plants had the least values (5.56 cm). Rabbit droppings enhanced leaf length in tomatoes (9.3) at 10WAP which was significantly higher than all the other treatments. PM and GS treated plants were not significantly different (p<0.05) in their leaf length. The untreated plants had the least values throughout the study.

The influence of plants and animal manure on the number of leaves of solanum lycopersicum was as shown in Table 4. At 2 WAP, it was observed that tomato plants treated with Gliricidia Sepium had the highest value (34.4) for the number of leaves which is significantly different (p<0.05) from all other treatments. At 4 WAP, 6WAP, 8WAP and 10 WAP, it was observed that tomato plants treated with Gliricidia sepium had the highest values (41.80, 45.0, 81,4, and 98.60) respectively, and it is significantly different (p<0.05) from all other treatments while the untreated plants had the least values.

The cumulative number of flowers of Solanum lycopersicum treated with different organic fertilizers was as shown in Table 5. At 4 WAP, tomato plants treated with rabbit droppings had the highest number of fruits (1.8) for number of flowers. This value was significantly different (p<0.05) form all the other treatments. The untreated had the last number of fruits. At 6 and 8 WAP, it was observed that the tomato plants treated with cow dung (CD) had the highest value (4.2 and 6.2 respectively) and were significantly different (p<0.05) from other treatments. At 10 WAP, GS treated plats had the highest number of fruits which was not significantly different (p<0.05) from the CD treated plants but was significantly higher than all the other treatments. At 12 WAP, the plant treated with rabbit droppings had the highest number of fruits (10.8) and it was not significantly different (p<0.05) from cow dung treated plant but was significantly different from other treatments while Gliricidia sepium had the highest number of fruits at 14 WAP. The untreated (control) plants had the least number of fruits. Table 6 shows the yield influence of different organic fertilizers on Solanum lycopersicum. At 6 WAP, it was observed that tomato plants treated with cow dung and rabbit droppings had the highest numbers of fruits (2.0). This value is significantly different (p<0.05) from all the other treatments. At 8, 10 and 12 WAP, plants treated with rabbit droppings had the highest value (3.8, 8.2 and 13.0 respectfully) while the plants treated with GS had the highest number of fruits (16.2) at 14 WAP but not significantly different (p<0.05) from the RD treated plants (15.1). The untreated plants had the least number of fruits throughout the period of the study.

Discussion

The stem height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers, number of fruits and the leaf length of Solanum lycopersicum influenced by different organic fertilizers were investigated. The results presented in the tables revealed significant main effects of organic fertilizers on the growth of Solanum Lycopersicum. Plants height and other growth parameters were influenced by the plants manure (Gliricidia sepium) from 2WAP till the end of the experiment. This was in line with the report of Zaharah et al. [22], who opined that the releases of N, P and K were rapid during the first 10 days and slower thereafter. About 60% of the N was lost within 10 days and a total of 76% of the original N. This might be due to the fact that the leaves of this plant decay fast and it is readily absorbable.

Rabbit droppings also influenced the plants height. Similar observations were made for the number of branches, number and length of leaves. This may be due to the fact that manure is a good source of macro and micronutrients, and manure contains all nutrients that plants need which is high in potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen [20]. Okoroafor et al. [23] reported that animal droppings gave the highest mean stem growth in maize throughout the time of the experiment.

Number of fruits and flowers were influenced by the applications of both plants and animal manures. The results of this work were also supported by other worker like Windham (1969) who opined that organic manure like poultry droppings, rabbit droppings etc. improve the structure of the soil thereby increasing the vegetative growth as well as the size and number of fruits. Also, Mbah [24] found that poultry, cow dung and other animal manures increased uptake of k, Ca and Mg by maize because these wastes increased soil OM, N and cation exchange significantly. The higher values reported for number and length of leaves, plants height and number of branches were consistent with the higher yield values in both plants and animal manures [25].

The growth effects of cow dung on the tomatoes plants were low at the early stage until after 6 weeks of planting when the plants’ growth and yield characters were influenced by CD. This result corroborates the findings of Ewulo et al. [25] who reported that CD treatments increased growth and fruit yield parameters of pepper such as numbers of leaves, plant height, number of branches, number and weight of fruits significantly (p<0.05).

Rabbit droppings enhanced the number of flowers and fruits (Tables 5 and 6). The result of these findings is in line with Tourte [26], who reported that there is significant influence of rabbit droppings on Solanum lycopersicum because of their high N.P.K values against another animal manure.

Conclusion

This study shows that the use of plant and animal manure improves the chemical and physical characteristics of the soil, thereby increasing the growth and yield characters of tomatoes. The applications of organic manure highly increase plant height, number and length of leaves, number of branches, number of flowers and fruits of tomatoes. Among the organic manure used as treatments in this research, Gliricidia sepium and rabbits’ droppings significantly enhanced both the growth and yield of tomatoes.

Recommendation

It has been shown that tomato plants that were treated with rabbit droppings and plant manure of Gliricidia sepium produced large number of fruits. These manures are cheap, easy to come by, ecologically friendliness and may increase farmers’ returns. In view of these benefits, these manures are recommended for farmers and Government.
