Five of Wands: Covention Duel!
Upright: Conflict, competition, rivalry, disagreements, tension, arguments, difference of opinion, clashing ideals
Reversed: Avoiding conflict, mutual understanding, peace, cooperation, truces, healthy competition, release of tension
The Five of Wands is the card of conflict, clashes, and competition. It could signify a literal physical fight (like the duels between Lilith and Eda or Luz and Amity), or more internal conflicts like differing worldviews or clashing priorities. In Lilith and Eda's case, their conflict derives from their opposing lifestyles and beliefs about magic and social systems; Eda practices wild magic and refuses to conform and join a single coven, while Lilith upholds and enforces the coven system and strives to get Eda to join her side by any means necessary. Their rivalry also stems from disparities of raw magical talent between them. Luz and Amity also show clashing priorities in this episode: Amity's diligence improving her Abomination magic to maintain superiority versus Luz learning magic from scratch to protect her loved ones.
When reversed, the Five of Wands symbolizes an end to a conflict, often through clear communication and trying to understand differing opinions. After their botched duel, Luz and Amity communicate their motivations and admit their failings in behavior towards the other. They both recognize a bit of themselves in each other, and are able to come to a mutual understanding and make a tentative peace—the first brick in the foundation of their relationship.

I never properly posted my contribution to the @narutarotproject! This picture is from around a year ago, it’s interesting to see how much my art has changed since then.

D:BH Tarot Cards "zine"
I got the pleasure to be part of the team that made this project a reality. What started as me fangirling on the side ended in a tight knit little community where I was able to paint 2 of the cards.
I was in charge of the design for the Back of the Cards and the Five of Wands!

The Five of Wands is a card about conflict, competition ,and rivalry so I painted Daniel!!
The realism got very side tracked by my demand for more glow but I don't totally hate it. It fought me a good but I wrangled it back into position ahah
And for the Back of the Cards, I just wanted to highlight the ribbon of fate and the mix of their respective differences. I went a bit more traditional since my fave part of cards is always the classy blues and golds.
Anyways, if you want to see what everyone else created then keep an eye out on the official account @dbh-tarot !! I'm personally making sure to also follow the IG and twitter!
I really love the vibe these cards have and every single artist is mad talented!!!

A gif of the progress. Ignore the part where I mis read wands as swords and it took very funky turn ahah. I'll upload the back of cards speedpaint later as I did it all in procreate where this one I jumped between procreate and sai leaving it very chunky

Five of Wands & FE3H
Tumblr media
The Five of Wands shows the struggles that come about in an ambitious and competitive environment. We see five figures each holding their own wands (their own ambitions), beating each other, or fighting over one another’s wands. This card shows the consequences of people pushing their own agendas at the expense of others. As a result, everyone is fighting only for themselves and nothing gets done.
The event this card reminds me of is the power struggle between Emperor Ionius and the Insurrection of Seven, most notably Ludwig von Aegir, Leopold von Bergliez, Waldemar von Hevring, and Volkhard von Arundel. Ionius’ move to consolidate power threw the already precarious balance between the Emperor and the nobility into chaos. The nobles were already ambitious and wary of Ionius, so Ionius’ actions truly threw oil onto a hot flame. The consequence of Ionius murdering all the members of the Hrym household is the Insurrection of Seven, leading to chaos within Adrestia. But we see in the resolution of the Insurrection that all of the nobles within it were doing it for their own gain, as they double cross one another, rebuild alliances to betray others, or attempt to flee with the only things that matter to them.

I think this card shows the general state of Adrestia quite well. Everyone is fighting for themselves and trying to prove themselves. Adrestia was founded on the principles of merit, especially when it came to nobility. The problem with meritocracies is who decides what is merit? Who decides who should be endowed with merit? If you can fight to be the one that gives out merit and decides what constitutes merit, wouldn’t you go for it? That is why all the nobles end up beating each other with Wands, trying to make their vision of a meritocracy come true.
That’s my thoughts on the Five of Wands. What do you guys think? Is there another event or mood that would better suit this card?
