okay, made an intro post for the daycare but not for myself, so. here we go
hi! i'm melanie hawkins. i'm 17, she/her. i live in unova, and my grandpa owns wellspring daycare on route 3.
originally joined rotomblr to rep the daycare (if you're in the area, come and stop by!!), stuck around because it seemed fun.
i have a trainer card, but the only battling i do is with very little kids at work.

How did you become a Ranger?
i covered my personal 'this is why you stay in school kids' origin story in a previous ask, so ill focus on the actual Ranger school and internships for this post.
there are a few different ways to become a ranger.
you are scouted by another ranger and they vouch for you to be accepted into either a ranger base or the school. its a matter of 'this person has a deep love for pokemon conservation and is skilled enough to basically be a ranger from the get go'. this is super uncommon now but it used to be basically the only way for rangers to be recruited back in ye ol' days, before stylers were used. most rangers wont even consider this anymore; a lot is riding on your rep if your scouted person turns out to be 'not great'. they just give you a reference now.
you apply and are accepted into the Almia ranger school. This the route that i took - and by far the most common one. you have to do a whole application process, similar to applying to post-secondary (with the stupid fees and everything). you are then separated into either an acceptance list or a waitlist. this is based on grades as well as a series of written questions and a shit ton of references.
I'm half convinced that i was considered eligible bc i had the Blackthorn gym and tin tower staff backing me (thanks guys!). that being said i did only get onto the waitlist - thank fuck some other kid decided that being a ranger was too much work.
once you actually get accepted you are able to choose what you actually want to major in at the school. this surprises a lot of people - the Almia ranger school doesn't just train rangers! it has a bunch of courses catering to rehabilitators, mechanics, researchers, field ops, area rangers, and operators, among others.
I chose to go with the area ranger courses - i wanted to return home to Johto at some point and the vast majority of jobs outside of Almia, Fiore and Oblivia are area rangers. field ops is stressful and mostly dealing with awful humans 24/7.
there are, of course, a lot of overlapping fields of study that we were all mandated to take. every student that graduated from the school knows how to use a styler in some way. even operators and researchers (although i doubt many of them remember a lot, the ones i knew skipped class to finish papers)
the entire thing lasts for around 3-4 years. it used to be way shorter - i think i heard people graduated within the same year - but with the spike in pokemon-related crises, rangers have to be better trained out of the gate.
there is also a whole thing with internships and field work; you can apply to spend time working alongside real rangers over the weekend while at the school. i think most of them are paid. ill be honest, most people that do internships get snatched up by the bases they worked for so if you are a student see if you can apply to a base that you are okay with working for.
uhhhh what else... oh! Once you graduate you can either send out resumes (in advance) to try and influence what ranger base you go to, or you get assigned a base by the school. In my case i was assigned to Unova - its nice there and most of my colleagues are p cool. but i do want to go home to Johto at some point.

Unovans United for Pokémon Unite!
Pokemon Black and White have been seeing a bit of a resurgence lately with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet referencing them in the latest DLC, the Indigo Disk. Not only is the story set in a facility floating in the waters of the Unova Region, there's also a slew of Gen 5 Pokémon returning as well. You'll even hear familiar battle music when you engage wild pokemon or trainers. There's also rumors abound about a Pokemon Legends Arceus type of game that would be set in a distant past version of Unova, but that's just lucid hopefulness gaslighting us, for the most part.
But all of this love is seldom seen in Pokémon Unite. Why, if you remember back when the game first released, there was only 1 pokemon from Gen 5 repping all of Unova, and it was Crustle. And not because anyone really liked Crustle for the most part. Out of the original 20 available pokemon, Crustle represented the Rock Types, the Bug Types, and Generation 5's Pokemon Black and White all in 1 slot.
Tumblr media
Since then, we've gotten some more love for Unova with the addition of Zoroark and Chandelure, though that still leaves Unova with some of the least representation in the game at the moment. I mean, technically that would be Gen 9's Pokemon Scarlet and Violet with the recent release of Meowscarada, but there are rumors that we're about to get a lot more love from Paldea in a few months.
Disregarding Gen 9 for a second, Unova is the least represented Generation in Pokemon Unite at the moment. I know what you're thinking, 'Aren't there others with a lot less? I could've sworn some of the regions were worse off than Unova.' And yeah, Gen 3 only had Absol at the beginning, but since then it has grown to have 4 pokemon added in, with Gardevoir, Sableye, and Blaziken coming to Unite to rep Hoenn. I mean, even Gen 2, who had 0 reps in the game at launch, can now see an entire team rep Johto with Azumarill, Blissey, Tyranitar, Espeon, Umbreon, or Scizor. Compared to Unova, you can't help but feel a little cheated...
So! Let's fix that with a poll! If we want more Unova love to come to Pokemon Unite, let's show our favor with a popularity contest!
There are more pokemon I wanted to put on the poll, like Mandibuzz and Eelektross, but Gen 5 has way too many good pokemon designs and I can only put 12 options on a poll. If I do a part 2 to this poll, you can see the winners pitted against the rest of the Unovan PokeDex, so vote and stay tuned for the results next week!
If you voted for Hydreigon, you should check out my moveset I made for its hypothetical debut in Pokemon Unite. And they're not on the poll, but I also made movesets for Keldeo and Scrafty as well, so give them a read when you've got time.
Until next time, see ya!

Worldbuilding Month: Day 3
{According to my outline, today was supposed to be “explain to the audience that culture is not erased but rather embraced; it just happens to coexist alongside Common and other international efforts for unity and peace,” but because yesterday’s post was so in-depth, fuck it, we’re talking about gay stuff.
Putting this behind a cut because the intro is long and the meat of the post is longer, and also, I’m one of those people who say the word “queer” a lot and would prefer to have this up as a warning so I don’t have to explain to folks why it’s okay and why the “queer is a slur” thing is TERF rhetoric.
Because Pokémon is a children’s franchise from a country that’s somehow more conservative about LGBT+ issues than the United States, it should come as no surprise that there’s very little explicit queer rep in canon, and anything that could conceivably connected to the LGBT community is either: A) actually fanon, or B) treated as a joke. (See any time crossdressing is brought up for the latter.)
It should also come as no surprise that I like to ignore this. Or, rather, I like to briefly touch on it now and then because I like the idea of using media to discuss topics of real-world importance, so the short answer about whether or not homophobia/transphobia/etc is dead is “legally, yes; culturally ... eeeeeeeeeeh.” As in, no one’s outlawed being queer. Gay marriage is legal everywhere. No government, national or otherwise, cares that you’re gay. Resources are not that difficult to find if you’re new to this and trying to figure things out, and the trainer community is very, very queer and very, very prone to having older trainers mentor younger ones so they can figure things out for themselves. (For the latter, the entire point of training according to trainers themselves is to go out, find themselves, and change their lives out there, so even if the rest of the world was just like it is IRL, honestly, training would probably be a lot like Tumblr, only with fewer TERFs and a lot more walking.)
On the other hand, there’s still a lot of tension. The entire idea of world unity and openness is still a pretty new thing, so older generations aren’t as accepting of queer people as the younger generations and various governments themselves are. There’s not really any violence, exactly, but it’s not exactly unusual for someone to have a parent who believes their lesbian daughters just need to meet the right person or a grandparent who’s just casually transphobic. The point is Bill’s world is definitely a utopia compared to ours, but it’s not perfect. Yet.
When it comes to culture beyond the old-fashioned folks out there, queer people are pretty well-accepted. There’s no push for having queer people in certain roles because on a greater scale, discrimination doesn’t exist. To that end, a lot of the characters you’re familiar with may be queerer than you think.
Which means I’m about to get into a List, but first, a couple of side notes:
1. The canon pokémon professors are largely ace, straight, or lowkey bi. Professor Juniper is definitely a lesbian, and Sycamore is pan, but the majority of the others are currently cis dudes in marriages with cis women, cis dudes who were once married to cis women, or Professor Magnolia (who’s aro). The point here is that most of the canon pokémon professors are at least attracted to a gender other than their own.
2. Giovanni is a painfully straight dilf, but the other evil team leaders are some form of queer. For example, Maxie is gay af, Archie is pan and in a poly relationship with his own executives, Cyrus is aroace, Ghetsis is sexually attracted to taking over the world (and himself), Lysandre is very gay and lowkey pining for Sycamore, Guzma is bi, Lusamine is also painfully straight, and Rose is pan but pretends to not be interested for the sake of the media.
3. All of the pokémon storage system administrators are queer with the exception of Amanita, who’s eight years old and therefore we are not going to fucking talk about what she wants right now. Granted, this is largely due to Bill’s habit of adopting every underdog he can find and turning them into administrators, and it just so happens that society’s most offbeat characters might be a little bit queer, generally speaking. I’ve gotten into which flavors of queer in previous posts, but I might bring it up again in a resource post of its own this month if people are interested.
4. Ash Ketchum is perpetually ten, so like Amanita, we’re not gonna talk about what he wants. He is, however, absolutely questioning his gender. (Red, who’s a separate character from Ash, will be mentioned below. Likewise for Blue, who’s separate from Gary. Alls I can say is Professor Oak had really bad luck with children and just so happens to have three orphaned grandchildren.)
That leaves the gym leaders, trial captains, kahunas, Frontier brains, and the Elite Four gauntlets/Champions, which are as follows:
KANTO
Brock is bi but doesn’t realize it.
Misty is painfully straight.
Lt. Surge is painfully straight.
Erika is trans and a lesbian. She may or may not be pining for Sabrina. (Related note: She’s the daughter of one of the kimono girls from the same troupe as Bill’s mother. I bring this up because of the whole technically canon point that only girls can learn the dances to summon Ho-oh and Lugia, which means Erika was taught these once she came out.)
Koga is ace but heteromantic.
Janine is a lesbian though. Koga doesn’t know, and Janine, knowing her father is super-traditional, has no intention of telling him, so she’s 100% in the closet.
Sabrina is ace but questioning her romantic orientation, and probably the only thing that gets her really flustered is the entire concept of romance (which is to say, Erika).
Blaine is gay.
Blue is very gay.
Lorelei is aroace.
Bruno is straight.
Agatha is straight and also salty over a failed relationship with Professor Oak. (Blue’s father is her son, by the way, but not Gary’s.)
Lance is gay af.
Red is pan and perpetually confused by Blue.
Trace does not exist idek what you’re talking about.
JOHTO
Falkner is bi.
Bugsy is aroace.
Whitney is a lesbian who likes to pretend she’s bi so no one questions why her gym is full of pretty girls only.
Morty is gay and publicly in a relationship with Eusine. (Or, at least, people know he’s in a relationship, but the media just refers to Eusine as “a local pokémon collector” and nothing more.)
Chuck is bi and happily married to his wife, thanks very much.
Jasmine is trans and aroace. (I like to pretend Special didn’t happen.)
Pryce is aroace.
Clair is probably the gayest gym leader you’ll come across. Yes, I’m including Kalos here.
Will is gay.
Karen is not only gay but also has been elevated to gay icon by the media. She is the sort of gay baby gays look up to and hope to be one day.
HOENN
Roxanne is trans but straight.
Brawly is bi.
Wattson is shockingly (no pun intended) straight and happily married.
Flannery is gay. She’s not as gay as Clair, but she comes very, very close. She’s also post-op trans.
Norman is aroace, and we won’t get into what that means for his marriage.
Winona doesn’t care for labels. (She’s nonbinary but goes by she/her and she’s pansexual.)
Liza and Tate are, like, eight, so we’re not getting into this either.
I take my comments about Clair back. She’s the most lesbian gym leader. The gayest gym leader, hands down, is Wallace. As an unrelated side point, he's not in a relationship with Steven Stone, contrary to popular belief.
Juan is Wallace’s gay mentor, but because he came from an older generation, his queerness is kinda toned down by comparison.
The entire Hoenn Elite Four is aroace. All of them. Glacia is trans.
Steven Stone is also ace, but he’s panromantic. He’s currently in a relationship with adventure.
SINNOH
Roark is gay.
Gardenia is gay. And trans.
Maylene is bi.
Crasher Wake? Gay.
Fantina? Gay.
Byron? Bi and married to a cis woman.
Candice? Gay.
Volkner? Very gay. Not dating Flint, weirdly enough. Yet.
Sinnoh is famous for having an extremely gay lineup, in other words. It’s a meme among the pokémon training queer community that one day, everyone will just move to Sinnoh and be ridiculously gay in the snow.
The Elite Four, however, is three-out-of-four gay, with Aaron, Flint, and Lucian being the gay ones here. Bertha is not gay but rather aroace and also trans.
Cynthia isn’t gay, contrary to popular belief, but she is in a wlw relationship. She’s actually pan, and her partner is Diantha.
UNOVA
Cilan is straight. Chili is ace. Cress is gay.
Lenora is bi and extremely happily married.
Burgh is aroace and nonbinary. (Pronouns are they/them or he/him.)
Elesa is ace but doesn’t quite know where she is romantically speaking.
Clay is extremely straight and furthermore one of those old-fashioned people I was talking about earlier.
Skyla is a very proud lesbian.
Brycen is gay and in the closet because he’s afraid Unovan tabloids would have a field day with that.
Drayden is gay, but Iris is pan.
Cheren is gay but too uptight to admit it.
Roxie is bi and also poly, incidentally.
Marlon is bi.
Shauntal is gay. She has a crush on Caitlin.
Marshal is gay.
No one really knows which way Grimsley goes, and he seems to delight in not telling anyone. (He’s bi.)
Caitlin is a very tired trans woman who’s also bi.
KALOS
You would think Kalos would be gayer than Sinnoh, but actually no. A lot of them are actually straight, bi, or simply ace.
Viola, Ramos, and Wulfric are all the “we’re just cis and straight” crowd.
Grant, Korrina, Clemont, and Valerie are all ace.
Valerie is homoromantic, though.
Olympia is bi and also post-op trans.
Malva is straight and once had an unfortunate thing for Lysandre.
Wikstrom is straight.
Siebold is shockingly straight, to the surprise of literally everyone before he’d clarified this point.
Drasna is gay ... which is also to the surprise of literally everyone, who all thought she was straight.
Diantha is openly gay, but her relationship with Cynthia isn’t public knowledge. She leans into the gay identity to be a lesbian icon for younger queer kids, but she’ll still accept roles for straight characters (even ones in romance movies) because she wants to also show off her range as an actress.
ALOLA
Ilima is gay and trans.
Lana is eight and what is this.
Kiawe is bi.
Mallow is also gay and trans.
Sophocles is aroace.
Acerola is surprisingly not ace but rather just simply straight. I have this headcanon because I refuse to make a pun out of her name.
Mina is pan af.
Hala is straight.
Olivia is very, very straight.
Nanu is too tired to care. (At one point, he was bi, though.)
Hapu is a baby gay.
Kahili is an awkward af gay.
Molayne is not only gay, but he’s also the storage system admins’ wise gay uncle, who possesses the only brain cell among the storage system admins’ gay community. He’s also nonbinary (they/them or he/him), but he’s honestly extremely chill about pronouns.
GALAR
Galar is basically the Sinnoh for bi people, ngl.
Milo is bi.
Nessa is bi.
Kabu is bi.
Bea is bi.
Allister is eight years old and what is this. (Probably ace, though.)
Opal is actually pretty straight. She was once in a relationship with Mustard.
By contrast, Bede is very gay. And also trans.
Gordie? Bi.
Melony? Bi.
Piers? Very bi.
Marnie is bi but kinda denies it.
Raihan is extremely gay and for some reason thinks the other Galarian gym leaders are gay too.
Klara is bi.
Avery is bi.
Leon is bi.
Mustard is straight and once had a relationship with Opal but is currently happily married to someone else.
Peony is basically like Clair and Wallace for straight people. Like ... he’s the straightest person you will ever meet. Take all the stereotypes about straight people, remove the toxic masculinity, and distill the results down, and you will have Peony. Peony is so straight you can use him to hang pictures perfectly. He’s so straight that if you’re ever insecure about whether or not you’re gay enough, you need just to stand next to Peony for five minutes. Peony is basically why almost everyone else is a little bit bi—because Arceus or Mew or whoever put all the straightness in the world into Peony and went, “Wow, I think I went a little too far.” Peony is that straight.
ORANGE ISLANDS
Most people probably don’t care about this region because it’s an anime only, but I care.
They’re all gay. Luana’s daughter exists because of a sperm donor, but Luana herself isn’t married and is very much a lesbian.
Furthermore, Rudy is trans because Electric Tales of Pikachu once made a trans joke about him, and you know what? I’m going to fix that so it’s something that actually respects trans people.
The Orange Islands are basically the other location gay trainers say they’ll turn into a queer commune, only it’s for gay people who judge the snow-loving gays hardcore. (To be fair ... they have a valid point. Listen. Listen, my fellow queer people. Why would you want snow when you could have sunny beaches and no frostbite?)
BATTLE FRONTIER
Anyway, Noland is aroace.
Greta is ace but biromantic.
Tucker is nonbinary (they/them or he/him) and also aroace.
Lucy is straight, shockingly enough.
Spenser is aroace.
Brandon is aroace.
Anabel is bi.
Palmer is straight.
Thorton is aroace.
Dahlia is homoromantic but ace.
Darach is 100% straight.
Argenta is aroace.
The Battle Frontier is, in other words, the closest thing to a Sinnoh or Galar for ace people. }

Okay, after like an hour and a half of sorting thru the pokedex, cross-checking with Serebii, and triplechecking my own tallies, I’ve finally got this sorted.
Please note; This is only based on the pokedex, not the datamined inclusions (Every starter+Mewtwo) or the various original form pokemon you can obtain (Meowth, Yamask, presumably og Farfetch’d and Zigzagoon?) In addition, I’ve filed new forms under Gen 8, as they’re basically new pokemon. I’ve also included the ratio of pokemon added v pokemon that debuted in that generation, for statistic’s sake.
(Gen): Pokemon Included in Swsh (Ratio)
Gen 1: 47 Pokemon (Out of 151, abt 1/3) Gen 2: 33 Pokemon (Out of 100, abt 3/10) Gen 3: 41 Pokemon (Out of 135, abt 3/10) Gen 4: 36 Pokemon (Out of 107, abt 1/3) Gen 5: 83 Pokemon (Wow) (Out of 156, over half) (WOW) Gen 6: 32 Pokemon (Out of 72, nearly half) Gen 7: 34 Pokemon (Out of 88, abt 4/10) New Pokemon/Galarian Forms: 94
So, it’s a pretty even spread overall, with one glaring exception. Now, Unova being based on the USA and Galar being based on the UK, there’s definitely a case for this, but... jeez, that’s a lot of unovan pokes, even by percentage. Getting over half it’s dex? Wow.
Important takeaways here: A lot of Gen 4′s representation (12/36) is through being evolved forms/ baby forms of other pokemon. Literally a third of it’s inclusion. Part of me wants to hope that this means Sinnoh Remakes are on the horizon, but you can never be sure. In addition, the Gen 1 favoritism isn’t quite as strong as I’d expected, but it’s still the most repped gen by numbers, barring Unova. (Seriously, what the fuck? I like Unova and all, but what the fuck, Todd)
Gen 6, despite narrowly being the lowest-repped by number, has the second-highest percentage, which really highlights how small the new offerings were in that game. (But damn, they were memorable) Gen 2, with one more pokemon in the game, is still only at a third of it’s repertoire.
Final conclusion: If this had been 17years ago, back when R/S/E were first coming out, if gen 1 had had as much rep as Gen 5 does here, I’d have called the remakes on the spot, just based on what’s all programmed in. (Side note;Jesus, seventeen years?) But with the advent of Bank, of Pokemon Home, of all this, and the fact that trading between different sets of games might not even be a thing anymore? It’s impossible to call. I’m just gonna sit back and see what comes, but uhhhh... Just sayin, if they announce d/p/pt remakes soon, I’ll have called that shit and all of you will owe me one (1) Misdreavus.

Rating each generation of pokemon based on the number of marine invertebrates
Tumblr media
I’m not much of a critic. It’s too hard to decide which generation of pokemon is best, because they’re all equally good. However, I am passionate about marine invertebrates, so that gives me a good, solid metric to work with. Let’s take a look through each generation and count up how much love they give to all our favorite goopy boys and crusty girls.
Note: I’m including any pokemon whose real-life inspiration is clearly a kind of aquatic invertebrate, not just ones that live in the ocean. Invertebrates of course can’t be any animal with a backbone, so fish, frogs, and lizards are out. Let’s get to it.
Kanto
Tentacool
Tentacruel
(Slowpoke)
(Slowbro)
Krabby
Kingler
Staryu
Starmie
Omanyte
Omastar
Kabuto
Kabutops
Total: 10 (12) Percent of this generation: 6.6% (7.9%)
We’re off to a very strong start. I knew kanto wouldn’t let us down with all its love for oddball animals. There are jellyfish, crabs, echinoderms, and molluscs galore. Slowpoke and slowbro are harder to place, because while they certainly look like some kind of terrestrial animal, they have a mythological origin related to a certain kind of sea snail. Special shout-out to our lovely fossil pokemon, which gave us a great start to a long tradition.
Johto
(Slowking)
Corsola
Octillery
Total: 2 (3) Percent: 2% (3%)
I’ll give these guys credit for being a small generation and essentially joined at the hip to Kanto, so Johto residents get plenty of love from the old invertebrates from last gen. Also extra credit to corsola for being one of my all time favorites, and for being very rare and important representation for coral (lots of little animals!).
Hoenn
Corphish
Crawdaunt
Lileep
Cradily
Anorith
Armaldo
Clamperl
Total: 7 Percent: 5.2%
The third generation is my favorite, so I’m glad to see it performing well here. The fossil pokemon are carrying on the honorable tradition of ancient marine invertebrates, who called earth their home for most of its history (sorry dinosaurs, you’ll get your due next generation). However, the fossil pokemon are also carrying most of the weight here, as Hoenn doesn’t offer much besides them. Could do a little better. At least another one of my faves is here (lileep!).
Sinnoh
Shellos
Gastrodon
Phione
Manaphy
Total: 4 Percent: 3.7%
What Sinnoh lacks in numbers, it makes up for in quality. Shellos and Gastrodon are the sea slug rep we never knew we needed, and they come in many fashionable flavors. We also get a legendary and an ambiguously-legendary kind of sea slug, the noble sea angel, getting the status they deserve. 2006 was truly the year of the slug.
Unova
(Dwebble)
(Crustle)
Frillish
Jellicent
Total: 2 (4) Percent: 1.3% (2.6%)
This is abysmal. I’m sorry Unova, you brought such a huge number of great pokemon to the scene, but where is the love for our spineless ocean friends? I included dwebble and crustle out of pity, since real life hermit crabs venture near the ocean at the very least.
Kalos
Inkay
Malamar
Binacle
Barbaracle
Clauncher
Clawitzer
Total: 6 Percent: 8.3%
In a shocking turn of events, Kalos sweeps away the competition, even beating Kanto percentage-wise. It’s a small group, but they come from a small generation, and they show their pride. Finally, the oft-overlooked barnacles get to join in the fun.
Alola
Crabrawler
Crabominable
Mareanie
Toxapex
Dewpider
Araquanid
Wimpod
Golisopod
Pyukumuku
Dhelmise
Nihilego
Total: 11 Percent: 12.5%
It’s no surprise that the region inspired by biodiverse Hawai’i shows lots of love to a wide variety of ocean dwellers. There’s a lot to talk about here, so let’s get started: Crabrawler has an uncanny resemblance to the coconut crab, which is typically found more on land than in water, but I’ll let it slide, especially since its evolution draws inspiration from a totally aquatic crab. Dhelmise is an odd case to judge, since it’s not an animal in any capacity. Its living portion is made of seaweed, and we don’t typically talk about algae having a backbone or not. However, since it clearly doesn’t, I’ll let it join the party. For these purposes I’m considering Nihilego some kind of bizarre jellyfish.
Galar
Clobbopus
Grapploct
Corsola (Galar)
Cursola
Pincurchin
Total: 5 Percent: 6.2%
I find it necessary to point out that not a single one of these marine invertebrate pokemon is water-type, which I think is very cool and fresh of them. I’m including corsola’s new form here because it’s a very nice and educational take on an old classic. Cursola just makes things even better with its spooky charms.
Conclusion
I think it’s safe to say that marine invertebrates have not been neglected in the world of pokemon. We’ve had a wide range of odd animals represented, but there’s always room for more. As for the generations, I think it’s clear that Kanto and Alola are the big winners here, but every generation gave us valuable contributions to the family. Even my favorite group, the echinoderms (starfish, sea cucumbers, urchins, etc.) have a decent number of representatives, perhaps enough for a full team. What kind of marine invertebrate would you like to see more of in the future?

Why Best Wishes and Iris are my favorite
Pokemon Best Wishes anime is my favorite. There's always been a lot of negativity and dislike towards the anime, so I'll post some reasons why BW is my favorite.
Let's just start off with a background. I stopped watching Pokemon for a while (left at Advance Generations), and I only recently started watching it again. In 2013, I randomly decided to watch a Pokemon Movie which was "Pokémon the Movie: Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice". I decided to try watching a few minutes, and then I got hooked and ended up watching the whole movie. I enjoyed the movie a lot actually, and I'd say the movie encompasses a lot why BW is my favorite.
I watched Pokemon again in 2018, I caught Sun and Moon on Disney XD and enjoyed the episode. So, I went backwards, and watched Sun and Moon (the current season), then XY and XYZ (VOD), and then Best Wishes, and then the rest of the Pokemon episodes I missed. And again in 2019 with Twitch Presents (BW and XYZ).
In 2019, Twitch Presents, more Pokemon (BW and XYZ again).
**The reason why I like Best Wishes is kind of the same reason why I like Raimi's Spider-Man 2.** Best Wishes isn't as much as about power levels but about just dealing with things. In Spider-Man 2, Peter did his best to live by “with great power comes great responsibility”. However, as Spider-Man, nothing seem to go right. In fact, Peter being Spider-Man seemed to make him miserable and sad. Spider-Man did not get rewarded for his good deeds or anything. He lost his job. His relationships was going down hill because he had to keep his identity a secret. And Spider-Man had bad publicity in the media.
Peter was starting to feel sad and just was really conflicted if he wanted to be Spider-Man anymore.
For Peter, it's not about Power Levels but it's about struggling with whether he wanted to be Spider-Man still. However, Peter came to realize and be grateful with what he has, and with “great power comes great responsibility”, does his best to become Spider-Man once again. I'd argue just like Spider-Man 2, Best Wishes does a good job at that type of story. Just like the Gen 1 anime.
Best Wishes does a good job with relationships with other characters and bonding and personally (it has a lot heart with how it depicts Ash and his journey).
One important thing is that in real life competitions, 'everyone' is always training and practicing. In the StarCraft scene (for example), and even if someone was great in the past, that doesn't mean they'll still be good and be up to face against newcomers at all.
Best Wishes gets a lot of bad rep because Ash seems to be reset. However, I'd argue Best Wishes does the best job at showing why Ash is the way he is (how he deals with lost and stuff). It's not just training the most but how they approach a situation and how they deal with loss. The question is what difference can a specific person can do to be the truly be the best? Ash in Best Wishes is very distinct.
What I like about Ash in Gen 1 vs a lot of other anime protagonist is that I'd argue Ash has very realistic limitations and struggles with his attempts to attain his dreams. **In Gen 1, Ash just did not have anything go right at all. Ash was late, Pikachu did not listen to him, and later Charizard did not listen to him. Despite things never going his way, Ash always manages to have a lot of heart.** Like when Ash did his best to train by running to charge up Pikachu, and his relationship with his Pokemon. Another example is when Sabrina turned Misty and Brock into dolls, Ash had to find a way to get a Ghost Pokemon to beat Sabrina. He managed to get Haunter and it didn't work out at first but it did in the end.
The way Ash acts in Best Wishes (examples with Keldeo, Meowth, all the Pokemon he caught in Unova, and his relationships) show why he can be the best.
Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice - Keldeo challenges Kyurem but he ends up getting the other Sword of Justice frozen. Ash runs into him, and says "he'll take care of things" and goes off and does his best at trying to free the Sword of Justice even though he knows he has little chance at winning directly. I find the BW Trio to be very endearing. Ash and friends help Keldeo, do their best to fight Kyurem, and Ash and Keldeo form Ash Keldeo (which is like Ash Greninja but it came out before that)... and Keldeo still cannot win but Kyurem decides that Keldeo learned his lesson and the story is done. I really enjoyed the Ash Keldeo vs Kyurem fight, and when I finished Sword of Justice, I felt like I got into Pokemon again. That movie (and the Rival Destinies song) is a good representation on why I like Best Wishes.
Another moment is when Meowth joined the BW Trio, and then later betrayed the BW Trio... Ash says that he had fun with Meowth (even after Meowth betraying him). While Best Wishes does not have the most powered up Ash, I'd argue it has the Ash with the most heart. Another great moment is the Butterfree throwback episode in Best Wishes. Finally, I enjoyed the ending to BW where Team Rocket traps the BW trio but the BW trio manageds to get out of the trap with Ash holding onto the ledge, Cilan next, and Iris next, and Iris swinging everyone up out of the trap to face Team Rocket again. The BW trio was a really fun dynamic. These are just some examples.
**Now, let's get into Ash's power level in Best Wishes.** Pikachu vs Snivy (Trip's Snivy), in that episode Zekrom made Pikachu sick. So, the infamous Pikachu loses to a Snivy that never fought before, and there's that. However, when things got real (Ash vs the Forces of Nature), Ash can still do his best. Pikachu was able to fend off three legendaries (the Forces of Nature) at the Season 2 finale of the Best Wishes anime. So, when things mattered, Ash was still himself. I'd argue in terms of power levels, context matters a lot, and Best Wishes didn't really downgrade Ash (although Ash is definitely more laidback and goofier in Best Wishes, I'd say he was still himself when it was serious).
**Second, I like all the antagonists in Best Wishes.** The thing about Trip is that he's just a random person that kind of acts like a jerk. Like someone you can randomly run into in PvP but he mellows out. Skyla is another good example. She decides who wins or loses based on the meta and type match ups. It's like if in MTG, someone just decides who wins or loses based on decks without even playing. I found Skyla (knows the meta and doesn't think playing is needed), Trip (some random person that kind of acts like a jerk but once you bond with him more, he kind of just mellows out and that's it), and other antagonists a lot fun. There's no real Gary or anything but I find just all the range of characters Ash would battle against interesting and fun.
**Finally, let's talk about why Iris is my favorite.** The reason why I like Iris is because she has a lot of empathy from her desires. Let's get straight to the point, while Iris does say “you're such a kid” (once an episode basically), in terms of actual interactions, Iris is probably the nicest and kindest companion. If I had to pick any companion, I'd pick Iris because she'd always defend you, and be with you, even if things aren't going well.
**[1.]** When Ash first met Iris. Ash accidentally throws a Pokeball at Iris. Despite that though, Iris takes that introduction to be completely fine. Honestly, when I first started watching BW in VOD, I knew of the negativity Iris got but at this point, I never really got it. I mean, she's really nice in the intro episode and all the other episode. Most importantly though, in the third episode (BW003), Iris follows Ash and she tells Ash that she wanted to help show him the region. It's nice of Iris to want to show Ash around. My family and I moved to to the US in the 1980s from Asia. Honestly, if I had to pick a companion, I'd pick Iris because of that. Again, it's just honestly. If you can meet someone, how is Iris not a nice person when she wanted to show Ash around and help him and stuff.
**[2.]** In that same episode (BW003), there is a moment where Ash is about to fall into water but Iris helps catch him. Later, when Trip insulted Ash, Iris defended him (most importantly; I'd argue there aren't that many cases of other companions defending Ash when he gets insulted as Iris does). Whenever Ash fell, Iris always ask if he was fine (“Ash, are you all right?” Again, at this point, how can people dislike Iris when she's really genuinely nice). Iris bought Ash ice cream. And one of my favorite moments is Roxie vs Ash. Ash was losing... and Iris managed to get bongo drums and did her best to cheer on Ash (BW084). It's really touching and heartwarming. I mean, the reason why I like BW is because it really had a lot of nice character dynamics like that. Finally, Iris defends her friends in BW098 (one of my favorites). BW098 is the one where Iris gets the others to crossdress, so that they can enter a competition to defend her friends' honor (Iris defends her friends that were insulted). It's really funny but at the same time really heartwarming too.
**[3.]** Iris's strength in Best Wishes - Iris in Best Wishes is again, a good throwback to Ash in Gen 1. Before Best Wishes began, Iris won 99 times with Drilbur/Excadrill. So, Iris can win when it matters too. In the beginning of BW, Iris does her best to find Dragon type Pokemon (she just has Excadrill and Axew). At first, Iris was afraid of Dragons but she does her best to become a Dragon Master, and so while she does a good job with Excadrill, she tries to train Axew and get other Pokemon. But like Ash, Iris doesn't really (well, especially after the incident with Excadrill) push her Pokemon too much. So, she takes her time with her Pokemon after that incident.
What I like about Iris is she has a lot of interesting dynamics that a lot of other companions do not have. First, I liked that she started off having a strained relationship with Excadrill.
For example, I really like May in AG but May (and I'd argue same with a lot of other companions) did not have that many struggles displayed. May vs Harley. Harley tricks May (giving her the wrong info), and... May falls for it and still wins against Harley (after Ash cheers her on). May is a starting out, and she never really loses or has a dynamic or a story where she struggles with things. In the other series, when a character wanted a Pokemon, thet'd probably get that Pokemon. Basically, do a good deed (want a Pokemon or be nice to a Pokemon) to get a reward (catch Pokemon).
But what I like about Iris's story is that there are times where Iris wants a Pokemon like Tepig (BW004) or Deino (BW056), and Iris does not get that Pokemon. BW056 especially since Iris spent the whole episode staying with Deino since apparently his owner abandoned him (it turned out he was actually just late).
Finally, when Iris managed to get Dragonite to join her, Dragonite did not listen to her at first and struggled. Iris worked really hard to get that Dragonite (defending it from others) but even then, things don't go her way.
Again, I think this is a nice throwback to Gen 1 anime where nothing went Ash's way and he just did his best.
**[4.]** As for Iris saying “you're such a kid”. In BW130, Iris's says “Aww” after Ash tells his story of his Butterfree. In an episode where Cilan and Ash are enjoying a view of a field, Iris says “you two are such kids” while later playing around in water later. When Iris says “you're such a kid”, I hardly say it's an insult at all. I'd argue she's saying it (when she's saying to Ash and Cilan) to me that they're being cute to her.
**[5.]** Personally, I find Iris really funny. Meowth says “Don't worry. I'm empty handed.” Iris replies with “Duh, you're a Pokemon”. Zorua transforms into Georgia (Iris's rival) in front of a camera, and and Iris hides behind the transformed Zorua, and says “Iris is the best” while Zorua lipsyncs for her. Honestly, there's a lot of these moments in Best Wishes and I find it really funny. Iris nice and a fun character to me.
**[6.]** I'll finish this with saying that Iris has a lot of empathy, and what I like is that she has empathy from her desires. I mean, the way she acts and the way she wants (like wanting Deino) is why she defends her friends like in (BW098). Or when Trip insults Ash, and Iris defends Ash. There are very specific moments for Iris that are unique to her as a companion compared to all the others. In a lot of media, a person does nice things to save others or because they went through a tragedy or dark past but I find there's a lack of times where there are characters shown to do nice things because they understand what it feels like to want something.
**Anyway, that's my post and I hope it changes some people's mind about Best Wishes and Iris.** While Best Wishes doesn't really focus on power levels, I'd argue it best show why Ash is the way he is. The Butterfree episode, his experience with having Meowth in the party (he said it was fun), and Sword of Justice Keldeo (Keldeo needed help, Ash knew he had little chance against Kyurem but said 'he'd take care of it'). As for Iris, again I find it really silly for people to dislike her when the only thing negative she does is say “you're such a kid” (which again, I'd argue isn't even an insult when used to Ash and Cilan; there's many times where Iris says “aww” or something else to Ash like in the Butterfree episode).
In Twich Presents (2019), there were around 20k viewers at the beginning and still 20k at the end, and by the end of the last stream, most people said they liked it in chat. Again, I hope my post changes some people's mind about Best Wishes and Iris. Personally, I find the negativity around BW really exaggerated, and especially since I'd argue that Iris is actually one of the nicest and kindest companions (she defends Ash whenever he gets insulted, played bongo drums when losing to Roxie, and did not mind getting hit with a Pokeball by Ash and instead wanted to show Ash around the region since he was new to Unova). And while BW does not have Ash with the most power level (he can still do things when things get serious like Ash and Pikachu vs the Forces of Nature trio legendaries), BW does have Ash with the most heart (lots of nice throwbacks to Gen 1 Ash when he was starting out).

POKEMON CARD MEME  -  REPOST. do not reblog!
Tumblr media
NAME:  Kenzi Malikova AGE: 24 HOME REGION:  Unova region. Born in Icirrus city, but moved at 13 to Castelia City and left on her adventure at 16 too tempted by the thought of the world beyond the city walls to stay a day longer. FIRST POKEMON:  A Poochyena, stolen and adopted by Kenzi when she was young after she found out its original owners were abusing the small pokemon. The pup was grateful and hasn’t ever been parted from Kenzi’s side and has since evolved into a Mightyena through years of training. POKEMON DREAM:  Mostly to see the world, hopefully, see something amazing, hear some stories, and meet some amazing people along the way. And if another dream is born along the way, all the more fun. TYPE SPECIALITY: Dark. Kenzi thinks this specialty tends to get a bad rep considering how pokemon of this type often get employed by criminals but in her eyes all the more reason to do her best to prove that stereotype wrong. TRAINER TYPE:  Low-key, v chill ace trainer. Kenzi loves to compete and she always makes time upon her daily travels to train herself and her pokemon to face any obstacles they may meet on the road including other trainers, criminals, and gyms. But it’s really not where her passion is. Training is all well and good but the bonds she’s forming with her pokemon are more important as are the memories she’s making on the road with them than any trainer challenges she overcomes. All that being said she does take what training she does and battles she accepts seriously as she expects from every trainer she meets. CURRENT LOCATION AND ACTIONS:  Who knows? It’s rather hard to keep tags on Kenzi since she’s a vagabond and doesn’t tend to linger in one place for long. Always chasing after the next adventure.
MEET THE TEAM.
#1 Name:  Mightyena Nickname:  Ruby Nature:  Brave Met:  In her home city Icirrus, as a Poochyena. 3 Likes:  Alone time relaxing with Kenzi, playing with wild pokemon, spicy treats 3 Dislikes:  anyone other than Kenzi petting her, sweet food, her teammates getting injured Move set:  Bite, Take Down, Crunch, Assurance
#2 Name: Gyarados Nickname:   Ryuu Nature:  Bold Met:  as a Magikarp just outside her home city. She fished him out of a pond and spent months training him till he evolved into the dragon he is now. 3 Likes:  Kenzi taking him out to swim whenever possible, storms, treasure 3 Dislikes:  going too long between battles, dry/hot days, other Gyarados Move set:  Twister, Dragon Rage, Ice Fang, Hydro Pump
#3 Name:  Espeon Nickname:  Chessa Nature:  Modest Met:  Honestly the little psychic found Kenzi on one of the darkest days of her life. She’s been her companion ever since. 3 Likes:  Having her fur stroked by Kenzi, playing with her teammates, naps preferably with Kenzi or Ruby 3 Dislikes:  getting wet, being ignored, when her companions are distressed or sad Move Set:  Calm Mind, Psychoshock, Psybeam, Hidden Power
#4 Name:  Absol Nickname:  Celeste Nature:  Serious Met:  Giant Chasm. Kenzi met Celeste after Chessa led her to a crack in the cave she’d been exploring. Finding the Absol injured from a fall she took hours to coax the wary and skittish pokemon into letting her use a potion on it. Afterwards, he followed her out of the cave and was willingly captured into a pokeball. 3 Likes:  music, rain, quiet downtime 3 Dislikes:  battles, competitions, chaos Move Set:  Night Slash, Shadow Claw, Dark Pulse, Perish Song
#5 Name:  Rapidash Nickname:  Duchess Nature:  Sassy Met:  as a Ponyta on route 077 in Kanto. The stubborn horse took almost all the pokeballs Kenzi had on her at the time despite it having next to no stamina left after battling. 3 Likes:  Going for runs with Kenzi *she always wins*, Competitions, being first in battle 3 Dislikes:  accidentally burning Kenzi while being groomed *it’s happened twice and both times it was Kenzi being clumsy*, not being the center of attention, most people Move set:  Flare Blitz, Megahorn, Wild Charge, Overheat
#6 Name:  Dialga Nickname:  Sometimes Kenzi will call them ‘Dude.’ in tones ranging from awe to absolute confusion. Nature:  Calm Met:  Spear Pillar in Sinnoh. Honestly the rest of the details are a long story. Kenzi is willing to tell it but you need a good amount of time and be willing to buy her a drink somewhere first. 3 Likes:  Protecting what they believe is theirs, Peace , Most of mankind 3 Dislikes:  Palkia, Conflict, Violence Move set:  Roar of Time, Draco Meteor, Dragon Pulse, Aura Sphere

Charlie Hart
Xe’s a heartbreaker. Xir name...Charlie. To be fair, xe isn’t purposefully setting out to break hearts. Xir badass biker persona just happens to attract plenty of admirers, and their hearts are only broken as a result of xem not being able to reciprocate their feelings even if xe wanted to. Xe’s never sought after a QPP either, though likely wouldn’t say no to the idea if one formed naturally. Charlie’s heart is plenty focused on xir bike, xir family, and xir Pokémon. Xe has fond memories of riding sidecar in xir dad’s bike when he was still riding, then riding beside him on xir own for a few years when xe was able to. Xe wishes xe had more memories of xir mother, but something happened and she hasn’t been in xir life since they were five or so. Charlie doesn’t even remember what happened, though xir dad insists she didn’t just walk out. Xe’s always wanted to try and find xir mother and get some answers, even if it’s as a body rather than the living person, and trying to find that closure is what led to xem becoming a missing persons investigator in the first place so xe could help others find closure while looking for xir own.
-----
Have some more Battle Peak in the wee hours, hehe. Any time I think of Unova beyond the strict plot, my mind either goes to how great the Lillipup family is and the rotation/triple battle specialist, Motorcyclist Charles. You know, Charles. The self-professed heartbreaker. Anyway, I wanted my Unova rep to be related to him in some way, so here’s his kid Charlie :3 Also Charlie’s my first character to actively use neopronouns??? :O I think I got this set grammatically correct from what I researched, but if I need to reformat things feel free to lemme know! I still don’t know how to pronounce “xe” without it sounding like “she” in my mind’s best guess, I’ll just back to googlin’ that
Since the Battle Peak is much like the Battle Tower and similar facilities, Charlie doesn’t have a set team each time xe’s fought. Xe will select three (or four, if in a double battle) from xir six best Pokemon: Krookodile (always present), Zebstrika, Archeops, Basculin, Accelgor, and Scrafty

Welcome to the world of Pokemon, Caroline! You have been accepted for the role of Tabby Fagin. To get started, please consult the new trainer checklist.
OOC INFORMATION
NAME: Caroline, Caro
AGE: 28
TIMEZONE: EST
PRONOUNS: She/her
PRIOR EXPERIENCE: I’ve been roleplaying for about five years now. You can find a list of my accounts here.
OTHER: Nope!
CHARACTER INFORMATION
CHARACTER: Tabby Fagin
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS CHARACTER?: As someone who both loves dogs and likes them better than people, I relate to Tabby a lot. And while I think she already has a lot of solid character growth, I think her position in life where her family gave up everything to help animals in need kind of makes her a bit harsh on the rest of the world. I think it’ll be really interesting to see how she ends up opening up to people and whether or not she makes mistakes when it comes to who she can trust when she’s so naturally skeptical of literally everyone.
CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY: Nope, I wrote it so I’m pretty cool with it.
POKEMON
HAVE YOU BEEN EXPOSED TO POKEMON PREVIOUSLY?: I used to watch the anime on WB Kids every Saturday morning until Misty and Brock left and broke my heart. At one point I tried to watch the Black & White anime, but I couldn’t get over how they pronounced Unova and had to stop. I’ve also played almost every game ever, but I only got to Hoenn recently. Somehow I managed to miss two whole generations of Hoenn games, but I got Alpha Sapphire a few months ago and finished it.
WHAT BABY POKEMON WOULD YOUR CHARACTER BE MOST INTERESTED IN HAVING?: Riolu, hands down. It’s a perfect intersection of Tabby’s interest in dark-colored and doglike Pokemon. A lot of the baby types are very cutesy and pink which just doesn’t fit her aesthetic. I think she’d also be interested in having a Fighting-type since most of the Pokemon she covets are Dark-type and it’d be good to cover more of her bases.
WHAT EEVEELUTION WOULD YOUR CHARACTER MOST LIKE TO HAVE?: I think Tabby would hands down be happiest with the idea of having an Umbreon. I think not only does it go with her whole facade of darkness and tough-looking Pokemon but leveling up via friendship would appeal to her. I also think she would never, ever want a Sylveon given the creepy skin bows.
WHAT LEGENDARY OR EVENT POKEMON WOULD YOUR CHARACTER MOST LIKE TO HAVE?: This is going to sound really depressing, but I think Tabby would most want a Celebi. I think the idea of having a Pokemon that could wander across time would appeal to her because some childish part of her would think it could go back and keep anything from happening to her mother.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONS
In lieu of a writing sample, please answer the following questions in your character’s voice so we can get a sense of their characterization.
1. Do you believe that people are simply good or evil?
I don’t think people are evil in the way that our justice system portrays them to be. I don’t know why we care so much who is or isn’t smoking pot when there’s far worse things out there happening that we don’t try to stop. I do think there are shades of bad in this world that are unredeemable, shades of violence and abuse in particular. But by and large I’d say the largest evil currently facing our society is apathy. People claim to care so much about things, but not enough to leave the house once a year to vote or to even fill out a census. I think so many people in life just accept their circumstances and grind their life out in quiet depression and I’ve just never really understood that. And then there’s the rich. There’s people in this world that have more power than any president or prime minister because they have so much money they don’t need. And there’s no excuse for that level of greed and neglect towards other’s pain and suffering. Honestly, if you have enough money to put a dent in world hunger, or the housing crisis, or even some poor kid’s cancer bills, and you don’t - well, you’re the fucking devil.
2. If you could travel to any other region in the Pokemon world, where would you go and why?
I’d like to see Alola. My parents went there on their honeymoon and there are a bunch of pictures of them out by the sea with drinks in their hand, my dad said they carved their initials out on a tree somewhere and I’d like to find it - if they haven’t turned it into a parking lot by now. And I’d also really love to get my hands on a Rockruff, they’ve just always looked so cute when I see them on TV. We’ve never gotten on in the shelter though, so I’ve never gotten to up close and personal with one.
3. What Pokemon type do you believe best represents your personality and why?
I’d be a Dark-type. The analogy works in the fact that like 99% of my clothing is black, but I’m not really going on aesthetic. I just think Dark- and Ghost-type Pokemon get a bad rep because people see them as remnants of a bad situation, as shadowy vestiges of something that came before. And I guess maybe it’s that my dad could have looked at me the same way but he didn’t, he found the light in the situation and used it to his advantage. And I’m really no real stranger to the shadows either, I liked hanging out in the sewers back in Castelia City. It was down there that I first started battling and figuring out how much of a rush it gave me and then I’ve always been good at finding hiding places when I’m running around playing Robin Hood in the streets. I’m not really afraid of the same things other people are, any creatures lurking in the shadows should be afraid of me.
4. You have chosen to leave home to raise Pokemon on the road, braving rain, cold, and heat. What do you think you can gain from being on the road that you couldn’t get from staying in your hometown?
I’m used to being cold or damp, I literally lived on a houseboat. I don’t know, a lot of days I feel pretty sad about having left home if I think about it too much. I miss my dogs and my bed and just the general atmosphere of the city, none of the towns in Kanto really compare. The cities they do have are so bright and fun, I miss people wearing neutral colors and not smiling at you when you get on the train uptown. But I left because I needed to try my hand as an actual trainer, not just take down some weird doctors in the sewers. I guess as much as I pride myself on independence and not needing people, maybe being with my dad all the time kind of enabled me to just live his life and not have to figure out too much about what I wanted to do with mine.
5. Professor Oak can never remember his grandson’s name, signifying a possible larger issue with their relationship. How would you describe your relationship with your own family?
I really only have my dad. There’s like a smattering of aunts who used to babysit me when I was younger, but they all disappeared when our bank account did - so I wouldn’t call them family. I think my dad is the best person in the entire world. There are a lot of people that wouldn’t be able to even handle raising a kid by themselves - let alone one like me. I can be difficult, I definitely realize that. I like to do things my own way and I don’t like people trying to help me or telling me what to do. But my dad just has the most patience of anyone I’ve ever met and has the biggest heart in the world. It gets him into trouble sometimes but I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. He’s my rock.
