Come and meet ‘Bolero’, a rose bred by Jacques Mouchotte in France before 2003, that was introduced in the United States by Star Roses in 2004. So this rose is around for a while. Mine is growing in my Austin garden since about a year and it has been struggling ever since. But it had a tough life so far! Twice when I was traveling it got dried out so much that its canes turned brown. The arctic freeze in February this year reduced it to a two cane wonder and even now it is under two feet tall. But it is trying! It has produced six tiny blooms in the brutal Texas heat of August after I fertilized it with organic rose fertilizer a few weeks back and water it regularly. Its current flowers are under two inch in size. But who cares that they are small. They are beautiful! I am certainly not giving up on this rose but quite the opposite I will give it the best possible loving care that I am able to and maybe, just maybe, I will get one more flush in autumn that has the deliciously delicate hues of apricot and soft yellow in the center of the blooms, that I have seen in photos, that this rose is able to produce in cooler weather. Spent some time in the #garden yesterday. Needed to get some good soil under my fingernails in my own #bunkbeds , felt good. The snow we had over Christmas lasted a few days but it was the final straw for the celery. So they all came out. As they did I found the leeks and onions coming up, the garlic is about 6 inches out of the ground, the three types of beets planted last fall are putting on some good greens, the last remaining cabbage is hanging tough and the asparagus crowns are poking through the soil. Best of all the white radishes are hanging in there. Another garden scene with quite a cottage garden feel. I love the organic almost round shape of the flowerbed surrounding a tree in the foreground. Proportionally to the garden beds, there is a lot of paving in this garden. It could easily be overpowering but the way the meandering paved pathways are integrated in the softscape makes them quite pleasing to look at. There are a couple of benches dotted around and I really like that you have plenty of opportunities to sit down, relax, and take the garden in. Lastly, the planting scheme of the flower beds is diverse and informal. It looks very effortless and unpretentious to me, just the way I like it. I find this garden quite unique and think its design is really thought through and works very well. I am curious to hear what is your opinion about this garden. Please share in the comments! As many of you know already, I am becoming more and more fascinated by “all green gardens”. Of course, I still adore flowers but I see them lately rather like the icing on the cake when it comes to the garden as a whole. I absolutely love the colorful tapestry and year round interest that can be created just by mature shrubs and trees. They are truly the bones of a beautiful garden and the private English garden that I am featuring here today illustrates that perfectly in my opinion. I really think that regardless of the size no garden is complete without a few well taken care off beautiful shrubs and trees. Of course, if you have a small garden it might just be one small tree and a few shrubs but the principal stays the same. I am really interested to know if you are agreeing with me on that subject or if you are taking a different stance. Having the chance to design my own garden from scratch for the first in my life makes me think much more than ever before what kind of garden I really want to have. There seem to be endless possibilities which is great but sometimes also feels overwhelming. Right now I am contemplating if I would like to have topiaries or trimmed evergreens in my garden. Take the photo for example, which I took in a private garden in England a long time ago. The two pruned evergreens are giving the otherwise informal and lushly planted garden just the right amount of structure and formality to balance everything out and look harmonious. Of course, Austin is not England but it is surprisingly green and I have seen quite a few topiaries here. So climate wise it would be OK, but are topiaries too much work to maintain? They are quite fashionable right now, but will I love them in the long run? Or will I get bored with them? Are they too formal and contrived for how I would like my garden to look? So many questions and not that many answers, yet. I definitely need to ponder about this a bit longer before I make a decision. How about you? What do think of topiaries? Can anyone ID this beautiful plant, please? I discovered it in the lovely secret garden of the Airbnb, where I am staying here in La Jolla, and would like try if I can grow it in my garden in Austin. But to be able to do that, I need to know it’s name first! I love great foliage plants and find that they are often underrated in the gardening world and on Instagram. Do you agree? Lately I have really gotten into white and green variegated foliage because I have a lot of dabbled shade under the many live oak trees in my garden and I find it so pleasing how variegated foliage is able to brighten up these areas and add interest to them.
