God of War characters in a Haunted House
Kratos - Doesn't jump, doesn't flinch, no reaction whatsoever. Only here because Atreus asked him to come.
Mimir - As Freya pointed out, Mimir babbles when he gets scared. Talks all the way through the house, about anything and everything.
Atreus - Tries to act tough to start with, tries to laugh off the scares, but jumps a foot into the air every jumpscare.
Angrboda - She literally squeaks when she gets a fright, it's really cute! Compliments the actors costumes.
Thrud - Laughs the whole time. Thinks the jumpscares are hilarious.
Skjoldr - Is crying and shaking the entire time. Doesn't know why he agreed to this. Hides behind Thrud.
Sindri - He took one step in the door, heard people screaming inside and walked right back out.
Brok - Not scared, but curses like a sailor anytime an actors comes near him.
Freya - If an actor screams at her, she will scream back louder to establish dominance. Freyr may or may not have tricked her into coming.
Freyr - Thinks it's funny to start with, will laugh at the scares and the costumes. But the longer he is there, the more scared he becomes. By the end, Freya has to practically carry him out.
Heimdall - He doesn't scream or jump, but flinches really badly. An actor jumps out at him and he is ducking and dodging like a pro-boxer on crack. You can only tell that he is scared by the fact that he is silent as the grave instead of his usual shit talking.
Baldur - Talks a big game, acts all tough, but the second he gets scared, he starts swinging. He isn't even looking where, he just starts throwing hands. Has to be physically restrained for the safety of the actors.
Thor - Like Kratos, he only comes because Thrud begged him to. Pretty much unfased by the jumpscares, but will growl if an actor comes too close to him or Thrud.

I'm finished the Helga concept and feel calm 😌
I was too immersed in her design and, despite the wide variety of ideas, none of the previous concepts resonated with me positively. I experienced many failures and disappointments, but my desire and determination allowed me to return to this work again and again to create the ideal image of Helga that I imagined in my head. In the end, I am satisfied with the results achieved within the framework of the set goal!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She is Halfdan's ex-wife. It is unknown how exactly they met, but it is known that they have two beautiful children, Azura and Freyr. After divorcing her husband, Helga lived far from the village, in the dense forest. Half the trolls came to her for love potions and fortune telling. Her hut contains many magical artifacts and books...
I'll stop on this information. In the future I plan to create more art with Helga. Thank you for your attention!

So I wanted to elaborate on the Mat/Elayne Freyja/Odin parallel, so here’s that essay. For the sake of keeping this post semi coherent any off topic but vaguely relevant ramblings will be at the bottom of the post.
To start I was surprised to find out that while the obvious parallels between Mat/Odin and Perrin/Thor are often noted I haven’t seen anyone mention how Elayne is Freyja, so I’ll start by talking about those similarities. Freyja is a goddess of love and fertility as well as a goddess of death and war, and of course, of the magic practice of Seidhr which I covered in my precious Mat post. Freyja much like Elayne is a twin, having a twin brother(and masculine form) Freyr, the god of peace, fertility and prosperity. Freyr also has a horse cult, for some reason. Freyja of course is the second patron god of Seidhr sharing the role with Odin but she fulfills the more traditional and feminine aspects in a more socially conventional manner. Her husband, is often absent resulting in a particular myth of her crying ‘red-gold’ tears in his absence, her husband, Odr’s name actually means frenzied madness so shout out Rand. Freyja is also often depicted with having red-gold hair like everyone’s favorite Trakkand. She’s also associated with cats and she’s sometimes connected to the Phrygian goddess Cybele, who instead of a chariots drawn by cats has a chariot drawn by lions. Of course the Cybele/Freyja connection is debatable but I wanted to point it out for the lion connection.
Now onto the fun part, Freyja/Elayne and Mat/Odin, let’s talk about that dynamic. So if you didn’t notice Seidhr isn’t the only domain Freyja and Odin share, they’re both also gods of war and death, specifically they’re both gods of glorious death on the field of battle. Half of the slain are taken by Odin to Valahalla and the other half to Freyja’s realm Folkvangr. Now this might be a stretch but the sharing of the dead between Odin and Freyja reminds me of the sharing of The Band and the Dragons between Mat and Elayne in ToM and AMoL. Once again that’s a bit of a stretch but I wanted to point it out. Though I think the Band of The Red Hand is definitely a reference to Odin leading a procession of fallen warriors and the fact that Elayne gets shared custody is something I find very interesting in terms of this parallel.
Odin and Freyja are also both connected to the Valkyries for the above reasons. I think it’s safe to say that Brigitte is a Valkyrie, a spirit of a female warrior who comes to lead the dead to Valhalla and Folkvangr respectively. The fact that Brigitte bonded to both Mat and Elayne(through the horn and through the Warder bond respectively) is something I think proves this connection. Yada yada the Horn of Valere and the Heroes of the Horn are the Wild Hunt which in some stories is led by Odin with a Valkyrie at his side, Mat and Brigitte yada yada.
Also depending on who you ask Freyja is often conflated with Odin’s wife Frigg and Odin with Freyja’s husband Odr so uh- Matlayne
Now how do these connections inform Mat and Elayne’s dynamic. Well for one it explains why they are so heavily linked to eachother, from Mat’s vague connection to Manethran’s King Aemon and Elayne LITERALLY being the Rose of The Sun to Mat and Elayne sharing their weapons of mass destruction with eachother, the two spend a great deal of time with eachother and working together. Much like Odin and Freyja they compliment eachother and work together in their respective domains, whether that’s being a soldier and his Queen or two powerful people sharing battle earned death while accompanied by a woman warrior spirit and legendary procession of long dead heroes. They are complimentary halves and foils to eachother, they of course clash because they are forced to share space(share domains) but in the end they come to an understanding and make eachother stronger through their differences and similarities.
Okay okay tangent time, so I’m really insane about Mat/Elayne’s whole relationship and how Elayne is a thematic character foil to Tuon. Like Elayne is the Rose of the Sun and Tuon is the Daughter of the Nine Moons. The thematic relevance of Mat choosing to stay in Ebou Dar with Tuon vs. taking Elayne’s contract to become an Andoran general, choosing the Moon over the Sun. All I’m saying is that RJ robbed us of the potential Mat/Elayne/Tuon love triangle that would’ve shot and killed me. The Themes, The Character Foils, The DRAMA
Next tangent has nothing to do with Elayne really but was inspired by the previous tangent. So the Seanchen are represented by the night but they are also symbols of death right? Now one of Tuon’s names is Kore which is an epitaph of Persephone and with the death connection and the kidnapping that brings an obvious parallel to the myth of Hades and Persephone. But I’d argue that the story themes put Tuon in the role of Hades rather than Persephone while Mat takes Persephone’s role. I mean wed to Hades(Tuon) and brought into the underworld(Seanchen) only to become trapped there by eating a pomegranate(or accidentally starting a foreign marriage ceremony) able to return home to the land of the living(Andor) but only for short periods of time, all while becoming more than she once was as the Queen of the Underworld(Prince of Ravens). Anyways I have FEELINGS about Mat Cauthon.

15 Days of Freyja Devotion
Tumblr media
Day 5: Names & Epithets Kennings
Freyja isn't actually a name. It means "Lady," and was used as a title just like lady is used today. It has the same root as the modern German Frau (roughly the equivalent to "Mrs."). We don't actually know Freyja's true name, which is just another layer to her mystery.
Some of the other names used for Freyja are:
Gef ("The Giver"). This is one of the titles I use most often when praying to Freyja, as I personally experience her as a very generous goddess who loves to shower her followers with abundance.
Mardöll (meaning unclear, possibly "Sea Brightener," definitely related to the sea). This name is so fascinating to me, because it seems to refer to some sort of oceanic aspect of Freyja that has not survived in mythology and folklore. As Njordr's daughter, it makes sense that she is associated with the sea.
Skjálf ("Shaker"). This one is intriguing, and I personally relate it to Freyja's role as an agitator and someone who "shakes things up." In several myths she incites armies to battle, and I'm reminded of those stories when I hear this name.
Sýr ("Sow") highlights Freyja's connection to pigs.
Thröng/Thrungva ("throng" -- referring to a throng of soldiers, maybe?)
Valfreyja (literally "Lady of the Slain"). Another of my favorite of her names. I use this title especially when working with Freyja in her aspect as Queen of the Valkyries.
Vanadís ("Dís [woman or female ancestor] of the Vanir"). I use this one pretty frequently. I see this title as highlighting Freyja's importance among the Vanir.
In the Poetic Edda, Freyja is also sometimes referred to by her relationship to other gods, such as "sister of Freyr" or "wife of Odr."
She is also referred to as the "Mother of Hnoss," but Hnoss is an obscure figure who is only mentioned in one or two places and may be a metaphor for wealth rather than an actual goddess. ("Hnoss" literally means "treasure.") I perfer to read "Mother of Hnoss" as "Mother of Riches" or "Mother of Treasures."
I also personally sometimes refer to Freyja as the "Golden One" or "Golden Lady," although this is not historical. As I've mentioned, gold is a kenning used for all the gods but especially for Freyja, and gold is called "Freyja's tears." To me, Freyja the Golden One is the source of material wealth and abundance, and I may use this title when asking her to help me with my finances.

(From research but also from my own workings with him. This isn’t meant to be strictly historical this is more for pagans wanting to work with him. There will be a lot of UPG or SPG)
Tumblr media
A small summary of Freyr…or, Frey, Yngvi-Freyr and many other names.
He is a Norse god who was heavily worshipped as a fertility god, as well as a god of good weather good harvest and kingship.
Freyr and his twin sister Freya along with their Father Njörðr were originally from the group of gods that rivaled the Æsir called the Vanir.
Not much is told about their time with the Vanir though, their story mainly starts with them moving to Asgard as a deal made between the two rivaling groups of gods.
Freyr has a wife, a giantess named Gerd who he cares for deeply.
He is a fierce protector of women and it is even said that when he is around weapons literally won’t work on women. Swords would break against their skin.
He is also the ruler of Alfheim land of the elves.
Freyr is mentioned in the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda multiple times.
Tumblr media
My personal experience with him:
I was searching for a deity to reach out to after Skadi left and she’d given me a message to work with a deity who had a warmer energy. I think she already had Freyr in mind.
He really has been a warm energy. He feels like laying down in tall grass and making flower crowns with friends while you braid each others hair. He also feels like the hot sweat of a hard day of work, and feeling happy after you’ve done something you’re proud of.
He’s helped me with a lot of my struggles as a transgender man. I worry often about the features of me that are still “too feminine” and he has been there for me and helped teach me the ways to embrace the feminine sides of me. He’s such a positive influence and he shows up some of the most often in my meditations.
Tumblr media
Offerings for Freyr
Wildflowers/local flowers
Flower crowns
Bread
Alcohol (mead, beer)
Images of boar (he has a golden boar Gullinbursti)
Ship in a bottle/ship imagery (he has a ship Skíðblaðnir that can shrink and fit in his pocket)
Crystals that represent fertility
Citrine
Phallic imagery has also always been a very popular offering/way of worshipping him
Candle colors: white, gold, yellow, green, red
Non physical offerings:
Go on a nature walk/(disability friendly version watch a YouTube video of a nature walk or a virtual tour of a national park)
Make flower crowns
Make a filling meal with lots of fruit and veggies and grains
Write him poetry
Meditate together
Protect and stand up for women
Gardening/learning about plants
Working out (I don’t personally do this for him since I have 3 other deities I already dedicate workouts to but he is good for this as well!)
Tumblr media
All in all I think Freyr is a fantastic deity to have around. His energy is warm and so is he. I’m sure he can be very serious at times as well when he needs to be. But in my experience I’ve just felt only comfort when I go to him. Him and Thor are like the sunshine boys of my personal pantheon.
If you feel like he’s reaching out to you it could come just from having an interest in him that you can’t shake, or seeing things associated to him often. If you feel like he’s for you, reach out to him through your preferred divination method or clairsense to confirm and see if he truly is wanting to work together. Or just set up a little altar for him and have a place in your practice for worshiping him if that feels more correct for you 💛

So, a Dutch Yuletide tradition was that during the second night of Yule, New Years, the coming of the new year was celebrated with laughter, singing, drinking, and lots and lots of noise.
On the first morning of the new year, people would rush to their loved ones houses to bring them dried boar or pig, which would bring blessings and good cheer for the coming year. This might have been a holdover of the sacrifices done for Freyr.
I am a vegetarian, but was charmed by this idea! Nowadays the giving of meat has changed to giving a marzipan pig, or a speculaas (a type of spiced cookie) pig. I don't like marzipan, and although I looked, I couldn't find a pig shaped speculaas mold. But! Pinterest gave me a cute idea of making a pig out of pink cookies!
Roze koeken (pink cakes, or glacé) are also a Dutch staple by now, so I got some roze koeken, stacked them, and added candy eyes and sugar paste ears. I enjoyed them as our first snack of the new years with my wife, and they turned out so freaking cute!

OH MY GOD I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LOWKEY SHIPPED HILDISVÍNI AND SIF!!! The whole mending ties between the nations and realizing that they like each other as time goes on is so 😋
they’re great very slow slowburn material :D
This makes the two of us, then ;) Because admittedly, I wholeheartedly assumed it's my unapologetically pro-romance, "more girly interests and less male power fantasies in the media" self that invests in the potential of these two having a romantic relationship. On a serious note, a romantic arc with these characters opens innumerable possibilities for development and would serve as an excellent continuation of GowR message of moving on from toxic past and forging a better future of free will (first concept was the foundation of Freya's arc - especially Freya's missing peace side quest. Whereas the second one reflects Kratos and Atreus's journey - "so much to rebuild", Atreus embarking on his quest to find remaining giants; with Angrboda, yet again, honoring his decision and letting him go despite how difficult it was for her to part with him while also giving him the option to seek her out if he wanted to; hence gifting him her marble like he did his before).
Hildisvini is shown as a mentor type. He fulfilled a definite fatherly role for Freya and Freyr whereas with Atreus he didn't at all hold it against him that the latter mortally wounded him in his boar form (although that wound still gave Hildisvini trouble in his human form). Furthermore, he didn't baby or infantilize Atreus but rather saw him for a skilled young warrior with a lot of potential which he encouraged Atreus to use and treated him like an equal partner (another perfect mentor trait).
However, Hildisvini could benefit from abandoning the mentor role for a change and trying a different one, where he would have a partner-opponent whom he could have healthy and constructive arguments with and who would challenge him. Sif, showing her willingness to work with Hildisvini in the end in order to "rebuild" and create a better future, would, for her part, have the chance to partner with a self reliant and mentally independent man. A drastic change from her marriage to a passionate but spineless, easily manipulated late husband Thor. Who was never able break free from the toxic influence of his own father, even when he and Sif lost both sons because of Odin and were confronted with the risk of potentially losing their daughter. Who, despite being different and less self destructive than Magni and Modi, still absorbed her grandfather's problematic thinking and fell for his manipulations (such as when Thrud referred to Freya as Odin's "treacherous ex wife"). In that vein, Hildisvini's possible interactions with Thrud and an inevitable conflict would make for an interesting and necessary development for Thrud (as @stupidrant accurately pointed out in our recent exchange).
You're absolutely right about Hildisvini and Sif being a perfect slow burn material in a way that would logically fit into their story and characters as opposed to being a needlessly stretched out drama. Atreus and Angrboda, for instance, are more about open self expression and an unfolding in real time budding romance - the first such arc in Gow universe so far if I'm not mistaken (I've still yet to familiarize myself with the Greek saga), especially where first real and substantial feeling is concerned. Kratos and Faye were a classic "relationship of the past that the characters can never get back" (because - which is also a classical trope - one half of the pair has passed away) and that the leading character and the main story arc are fundamentally influenced by.
Sif and Hildisvini could provide a different but no less enticing type of romantic build up where two characters with rich personal history realize their attraction and feelings through active communication for the sake of the common cause.

God of War characters competing in the Great British Bake Off
Sindri - Spends as much time cleaning as he does baking. Makes simple yet elegant bakes. Ends up winning the competition (he deserves it!). Cries when he wins.
Brok - Has never followed a recipe a day in his life and isn't about to start now. Tries to put meat into everything he bakes; cakes, breads, pastry, you name it. He is the first to be sent home.
Odin - He makes over-the-top ambitious bakes, which he doesn't always have time to finish. He made it to the top 3 but lost out to Sindri. (He tried to bribe the judges to let him win)
Freya - Alternative queen! She likes to use alternative ingredients like coconut flour and xanthum gum. She isn't vegan or anything, she just likes to challenge herself. (Unfortunately this goes horribly wrong sometimes)
Freyr - Here for a good time, not a long time. He has no idea what he is doing, but he's having fun. Is so chill throughout the challenges and only panics when there is 5 minutes left and he hasn't decorated a damn thing. (was disappointed to be told he couldn't make weed brownies)
Heimdall - Has never had to cook or bake a single thing before, so he goes into the competition completely blind. Is failing miserably the entire time, but his superiority complex stops him from noticing. Was sent home after serving the judges a half raw quiche because he didn't know that he had to pre-heat the oven.
Atreus - What he lacks in experience, he makes up for in enthusiasm. Even if his flavours are questionable, his bakes always look amazing. Will drop anything he is doing to help others if they are struggling.
Angrboda - This girl makes cookies to die for! Her bakes are always colourful and tasty. Made it to the top 3.
Thrud - Like Heimdall, she has never cooked or baked before. She has never even heard of baking powder before. Has a very 'how hard can it be?' attitude. Most of her bakes come out burnt outside and raw in the middle, because she turns the oven to its highest setting, thinking it will bake faster.
Skjodr - He is an absolute beast at making bread. However he is hindered by the sheer anxiety brought on by the competition. He sweats buckets the entire time he is there. He nearly passed out when he won bread week.
Kratos - His bakes are always cooked properly and he never has any mishaps or accidents, but they tend to be very simple and plain, even the show-stoppers.
Mimir - Mimir is totally the guy who royally messes up his bake, but comes up with an elaborate excuse and tries to convince the judges that it is actually good.

She's a lil late but this is my fresh out the oven GOW OC; Stiorra [ᛊᛏᛁᛟᚱᚱᚨ]! She's the only daughter of Odin and is the Aesir Goddess of Starlight. She was wed to Freyr as part of the peace broker at the height of the Aesir / Vanir conflict. More info dumping under the cut:
(FYI in my mind Thor, Tyr, Heimdall and Baldur are all Odinsons) TLDR VERSION (trust me i have a whole ass document on this, it's incredibly self indulgent and not accurate to myths at all, sue me) Stiorra is the only daughter and middle child of Odin after Thor and Tyr respectively. Her mother is Nott, the Goddess of the Night, who did not claim Stiorra hence she was raised in Asgard and kept to the sidelines for most of her life growing up. Odin gave her a roof and riches, but not much else. She spent most of her time chilling under the night sky longing for something more and tending to her garden of mostly Dreamshade flowers. Stiorra was very distant from Thor but very close to Tyr who doted on her and tried to get her out of her shell. At the height of the Aesir/Vanir conflict and soon after Freyr's burning, it was agreed upon that while Odin would wed Freya - Stiorra would wed Freyr. This way there was a Vanir in Asgard, and an Aesir in Vanaheim to keep the peace. The start of her marriage to Freyr was turbulent and rocky, due to being wed against their will fresh out of the conflict, and being enemies by association. It would take decades for their relationship to develop into a loving one, and over time Stiorra grew to love not only Freyr but the other Vanir gods and people of Vanaheim. The bronze antler necklace she is wearing is a gift from Freyr from their customary wedding. When Tyr is labelled a traitor, goes missing and presumed killed by Odin, Stiorra was devastated. Years passed and upon receiving a vision that he and his wife (the lovely Julius from @sleepingmire ) were still alive, she set out on a mission to find them. Freyr made the decision to let her go, not wanting to say no to her when she has had so little choice in her life. Unfortunately she walks into a trap set by Odin, who jails her deep within the core of Svartelheim, away from the night sky where she draws her powers from. He pins Stiorra's disappearance and 'murder' on Freyr, using it as an excuse to resume his conquest of Vanaheim. Which brings us to the game Ragnarok where she is eventually freed by Kratos and Co, and reunited with Freyr. HAPPY RAGNAROK!!

Deep Dive: Freya - Happy Friday!
Tumblr media
Freya is a staple of the Norse pantheon. She is depicted with long, flowing, flaxen hair and sea blue eyes. She is a member of the Vanír tribe, a group known for its connection to nature and nature magic. Freya introduced the Aesir gods to seidr, a form of Norse divination and a magical skill that it is said can even be used to change the future. Despite being known for her gentle and, at times, sexy nature, Freya fought fiercely in battle and was known for the trail of blood she would leave behind her in war.
Other Known Names
Freja, Freyia, Freyja, Fröja, Frøya, Frøjya, Frua, Mardöll, Hörn, Gefn, Gullveig, and Syr
My personal favorite title for Freya is Valfreyja or ‘lady of the slain’.
Note: Freya comes from Germanic roots. Meaning ‘the lady’, it is the root for the modern German term of respect for an elder woman, ‘frua’.
Family Tree
The Norse goddess Freya, or Freyja, was the twin sister of the god Freyr. Both were Vanír gods and children of the sea god, Njörd. Her mother is unknown but frequently referenced as a much older Germanic goddess.
She took Odr to be her husband. Little is known about Odr, but his named means ‘furious and passionate’. In many stories, Freya’s husband is Odin, and she replaces Frigg. Thus, Odr might have actually been Odin. This might be due to the migration of Germanic tribes and their religions clashing. As they blended, certain gods and goddesses replaced or overtook each other in title. Regardless, it is known that she had two daughters: Hnoss and Gersemi.
Associations
Freya was in charge of battle, love, fertility, and death. She, like Odin, had a claim over half the dead slain in any battle and could choose to bring them to her hall, Fólkvangar. (In fact, Freya has first pick of the slain over Odin). She is known for being gentle, but not necessarily for having a soft hand. She is a warrior goddess with a heart of gold, so while she is forgiving and nurturing, she will also expect you to grow some tough skin and learn to survive and eventually conquer.
Freya was sex symbol and lusted after by many gods and giants alike. In a little bit, we will get into a story where her sex appeal causes quite the predicament.
She was a völva or female practitioner of magic, or seidr. This magic was specifically used as divination, where the völva could possibly alter future events leading to better outcome in battle. Little is known about the social status of these shamans. As with many magical healers, they were revered by some and feared by others. In later periods of the Germanic tribes, the völva’s place became much more defined as a leader woman or chieftain's wife. She is also said to be the keeper of the knowledge of the runes.
She was associated with cats, specifically two that pulled her chariot through the sky. She also was represented by pigs and had a giant boar with golden bristles named Hildisvíni. She is said to have a magical cloak of falcon feathers that can transform the wearer into a falcon.
Friday was named after this goddess. It is believed to previously have been ‘Freya’s day’.
Rose quartz, amber, and tiger’s eye are stones said to be associated with Freya.
Jewelry and perfume are associated with the goddess due to her status as a goddess of beauty and fertility.
Mythology
Freya is a goddess of polarity, straddling love and war, life and death. Like Persephone and similar goddesses, she is seen as both a light and dark figure. She was witch, or magic practitioner, which is a position in society that also crosses the line between good and evil. Finally, she bridges the Vanír and the Aesir – nature and the celestial.
In the great Aesir- Vanír War, it was Freya that oversaw peace talks with Odin and proper sacrifices. It is said that after this war is when she introduces the gods to magic, a crime against the Vanír. It is also said that Freya could be known as Gullveig, the narrator of Völuspá who recounts the Aesir- Vanír war and predicts the fates of the gods in Ragnarök.
In one story, Freya becomes the center of a giant’s focus. He agrees to build a wall for the gods under tight time constraints and, if he completes the wall in time, take Freya away to Jötunheimr (the realm of ice and giants) to be his wife. Time passes and it looks as if the giant might succeed at this task. Worried, Freya reaches out to Thor and Loki for aid. In order to save her, Loki transforms into a mare and seduces the giant's prized stallion. Thor protects Freya from the giant’s rage as, without the stallion there to help him, the giant is unable to build the wall and unable to claim his bride. Another bright outcome of this story is that Loki goes on to give birth to Odin’s 8-legged horse.
Freya’s status as a sex symbol occasionally works to her advantage. One of her prized possessions, the beautiful necklace Brísingamen, was gained after she seduced the four dwarves that crafted it. Of course, in this story, Loki finds out about Freya’s promiscuity and goes to Odin. Odin has Loki steal the necklace from Freya using his powers of transformation. When Freya comes to Odin about the theft, he reveals that he knew everything all along and that he’ll only return the necklace if she convinces two kings to go to war with each other. She does so, and the two kings fight on for centuries until a Christian comes and settles the dispute. To be fair, the written version of this story comes from the Sörla þáttr, a retelling of Norse pagan stories written by Christian priests.
Unfortunately, a lot of the written history of Norse paganism is retold through the lenses of Christianity. This is why we see Loki depicted as a devil-like figure, and Freya stripped of her feminine power and portrayed as a harlot who was obsessed with sparkly things. It is understood that Freya would have been powerful due to her beauty and seen as a goddess of fertility and lust. Her lust was wielded against men, a weapon of her divine feminine nature.
Modern Worship
Many practitioners of Asatru worship Freya as a goddess of fertility, beauty, love, and abundance. Forming a connection with any deity takes time and patience. Everything you do must be done with love and intention. It is hard to complete a task then an hour afterwards claim that was in a god or goddess’s name. You first need to slow down and think about what you are doing and why. Most everyday actions can be a form of worship! Just writing this post, I started by dedicating my research efforts to Odin, a god of knowledge and its pursuit. Next time, before you step one foot outside your door, offer that time outside up to a god or goddess. Give thanks at meals for the food and company. Before you go to bed, meditate on a deity and try to connect with the universe. Effort and patience pay off when working with the gods and goddesses, but that effort and patience must be true and consistent. We can’t just turn to them when things aren’t going our way (not to say you can’t start building a relationship with them when life is far from perfect). We must also go to them when things are good and offer gratitude when life goes our way.
There are many reasons to work with Freya. You may be deepening your connection with nature and its associated deities. You may be going through a battle and need a powerful goddess on your side to give you strength. You could be struggling to be intimate with your partner and be seeking a goddess of sexuality to aid you. Whatever your reason, tailor your practice to suit your needs. While it is not our place to take liberties with the symbolism and religious practices associated with a god or goddess, we can lean into something they are already associated with. So, if you are aiming to be a green witch and feel Freya speaks to you through nature, pick floral and natural aspects of worship. If you need support in self-confidence and beauty, use her love of jewelry and fine things to your advantage. Deities are multi-faceted and should be honored for all their parts.
Note: Freya is a shapeshifter and goddess of transformation, so she may come to you in any form.
Taking time to learn and research any god or goddess is also a form of worship. Set your intent before you begin and set aside a decent amount of time. Yes, life is crazy and sometimes our research is a Google article we read at our lunch break. But part of developing a connection with a deity is dedication. You don’t need hours upon hours weekly of study but, instead of scrolling through Instagram for a half hour before bed, say a short prayer and research Freya then for thirty minutes. Read the Prose and Poetic Eddas. Listen to podcasts during your drive to work that dive deep into her. Find the time and the motivation because, by coming this far, you have already decided that this relationship is a priority for you. That being said, I like to remind people that it is also never too late or too little to start. If you fall off the wagon, if you have six kids and no free time, whatever you are giving is enough. The gods see us for what we are and know what we have to offer. Don’t stress because you forgot to light a candle last Friday, Freya knows you were busy cooking dinner for your family and doing the laundry and forty other things. But do put forth some effort. The gods also know when we are taking advantage of their kindness and not trying at all.
A first step in attaining a relationship with any nature deity is to go outside. To honor Freya, spend time gardening or planting flowers. Pick a bouquet of your favorite flowers and bring them into your home or take tedious care of your garden. If allergies keep you from enjoying flowers or grass under your feet, try house plants or sitting in the sun on your deck. While grounding and connecting to nature are best done directly in contact with nature, we make exceptions when we need to. If you live in an apartment without a balcony, open a window and let the sun and breeze hit your face for a few minutes. If it’s always rainy where you live, the window is still a great option! Nature isn’t always sunny, so taking a deep breath of that fresh, rain-soaked air is just as connecting as letting the sun splash across your skin. Listen to the thunder closely and watch the lightning (from a safe distance) write messages across the sky.
Another great option for worship that does require a little bit of space is setting up an altar dedicated to a specific deity. While it doesn’t have to be anything grand, placing their image in a spot meant solely for them and then coming to meditate or spend time at that spot is important. For Freya, you can use mead, honey, flax wheat, apples, jewelry, or perfume to name a few options. Think nature, think beauty, think love, and think war. If invoking her for love, you may not want to leave mugwort. But, if invoking her for battle, the essential oil dragon’s blood would be perfect.
Freya is a goddess of sensuality and sex. Connect to her by savoring things. The smell of a flower, the bite of your favorite chocolate cake, the brush of your partner’s hand across your arm. Embrace the small thrills in life and seek them out. Did you feel that breeze caress your cheek? Did you notice how that beef was so tender it almost melted in your mouth? Force yourself to slow done during mundane tasks, in seemingly meaningless moments, and find the extraordinary in them.
On the other side of that coin, Freya is a goddess of love and known for being incredibly selfless. This means an act of kindness or love done in Freya’s name can mean a lot. It is powerful to set your intent before the act is done, but a life lived in kindness and love can be done as well and you don’t need to repeatedly say it’s for her – you can just be a good person.
Burn incense that are floral (for nature) or spicy (for sex). Open a window or go outside and let the wind carry the smoke. Believe that with it, all your prayers are carried to Freya. Or perhaps, light a candle and leave offerings for the goddess. All Norse deities enjoy mead as an offering. You can also leave her flowers and herbs like primrose and mugwort. Do some research and find herbs associated with the traits you’d like to utilize in her.
As a goddess of beauty, you can work with Freya by performing acts of self-care. This may mean going to yoga weekly or eating healthy. It can also include putting on makeup or adorning jewelry. Do these actions with intent, calling on the goddess to enhance your natural beauty.
Freya is a goddess of magic and worked closely with the runes. Learning the Elder Futhark Runes and their meaning is a beautiful offering for her. I, personally, dedicate all the time I spend studying and working with the runes to Freya and have found that she has led me to some much deeper insight into their purpose and has made my rune readings much more in depth.
Friday the 13th is a sacred day to Freya. When this day comes around, spend the day in nature. Take a walk, drink tea with honey, and end the day with a feast dedicated to the goddess. It is also said that this goddess died three times and was reborn three times, so the number 3 is important. Do things in threes in your rituals to her (for example: lighting three candles, chanting incantations three times, etc.).
Owning a cat and taking good care of it is said to be a way to worship Freya. Cats were considered sacred to the goddess and her chariot was pulled by two large domestic cats. So, adopt local and love your furry feline friend! If adopting isn’t up your alley, perhaps you can volunteer at the shelter.
And finally, my personal favorite form of worshipping any Norse deity: talking out loud to them. My first real experience with the Norse deities was after about two hours of me walking around my apartment yelling at them and questioning them. They immediately answered my questions in the form of my now ex-boyfriend coming home and saying some bizarrely philosophical things. So, while I don’t recommend yelling at the gods, I do encourage you to speak out loud to them. I know that the subconscious and conscious minds are powerful tools, but sometimes the most effective method of communication with your higher self is just plain old talking. Ask your questions, have a normal conversation because you’re lonely, explain what you’re doing throughout your ritual, whatever feels natural to you. And then be quiet, be patient, and see if you are answered. It might be in your next conversation, in the next words you read, in the next bird that flies by, but your answer should come. If not, maybe try yelling.
Remember that reciprocity is key with paganism. You cannot receive something without saying thank you. You cannot ask for something without giving something in return.  Consistent practice shows loyalty and dedication. Remember that you are working with old gods. You are never guaranteed anything, and you are never too far from salvation.

Day 6: Relations to Other Gods
This is where it gets... controversial.
So. Keeping in mind that true, pre-Christian Heathenry is not well documented, and keeping in mind that "Heathenry" is an umbrella term for a collection of regional traditions that could and did contradict each other, it's hard to make generalizations about the gods and their relationships to each other. Two seemingly contradictory interpretations can both be supported by textual and archaeological sources, and may in fact have coexisted historically. This becomes especially clear when talking about Freyja's relationships to the other gods. What is presented in this post is my own interpretation based on research and personal experience. Other Heathens may disagree, and that's okay.
As I mentioned on Day 2, Freyja is the daughter of Njord and an unnamed mother and is the sister of Freyr. This, at least, is pretty consistent across all Norse Heathen traditions.
Freyja's husband is called Odr. Some scholars, such as Jackson Crawford, believe that Odr is Odin, and I tend to agree. Odr and Odin seem to be different forms of the same name, and Odr is described as a mad wanderer, which sounds a lot like Odin. There are also places in the Poetic Edda where Freyja seems to be referred to as Odin's wife or lover.
On a more personal note, I experience Freyja and Odin as deities that are very closely connected. There is a lot of overlap in their powers and associations, and they seem to frequently work together. Based on this and the textual evidence, I tend to see Odin and Freyja as partners and spouses.
Freyja is also sometimes said to be the consort of her brother, Freyr. Remember, the Eddas say sibling marriages are a common practice among the Vanir, so this wouldn't have been seen as a taboo, incestuous pairing. I think it's also important to note that while the gods are like humans in some ways, they are also abstract ideas and, in some cases, forces of nature. As siblings and lovers, I see Freyr and Freyja as embodying the male/masculine and female/feminine aspects of fertility. (This makes it even more interesting that they both subvert Norse gender roles in some ways -- for example, Freyr gives up his ability to fight while Freyja revels in warfare.)
I am comfortable saying that both Freyr and Odin are Freyja's partners and lovers. The Old Norse practiced what we would recognize as polyamory or open relationships, so it makes sense that Freyja, like many of the Aesir, would have multiple lovers.
In Old Norse society, marriages were literal legal contracts and were often used to seal alliances and treaties. (In Anglo-Saxon England, which is not Norse but is a related culture, brides were called "Peace Weavers" because of how common these political marriages were.) It makes sense that Freyja, who is important or possibly royal among the Vanir, would be married to Odin, the chief of the Aesir. We know Freyja and her family went to live with the Aesir as peace hostages after a war between the Aesir and the Vanir. A marriage contract between Odin and Freyja would have helped keep war from breaking out again.
I see Freyja's partners as reflecting different sides of her as a goddess. Freyr reflects and complements her associations with sex, fertility, love, beauty, and agriculture. Odin reflects and complements her associations with magic, battle, death, and prophecy. Interestingly, both Odin and Freyr are associated with kingship and were said to have fathered lines of mortal kings, which may hint at some sovereignty aspects for Freyja.
And because I know someone is going to bring it up if I don't: yes, Frigg is also called Odin's wife and is arguably given this title more often than Freyja in the Eddas. Again, because having more than one lover was socially acceptable to the Old Norse, I don't necessarily see this as a contradiction. Maybe Frigg is Odin's wife and Freyja is his concubine. Maybe he was married to both of them at different times, but divorced one and then married the other. Maybe they're a functioning polycule. I don't necessarily need to know the answers to love and respect the gods.
There is a popular academic theory that Frigg and Freyja were originally one goddess, and I do see some truth in it. Talking about this theory would easily double the length of this post, so I'll just link to Jackson Crawford's excellent video on this instead.
I mostly agree with Crawford's conclusion that Frigg and Freyja were originally a single sex-and-queenship-and-motherhood-and-magic goddess who was Odin's wife, and that they had recently split and were in the process of becoming differentiated when the Conversion began. In terms of modern worship, I see them as separate but closely connected goddesses with some shared functions, similar to how I see the three Morrigan sisters in Irish polytheism.
