‘Bigger than the Oscars’: Blackfeet Nation honors Lily Gladstone with stand-up headdress

BROWNING — Wearing a white sequin shawl and matching ribbon skirt, esteemed actress Lily Gladstone kneeled on the floor of the new arbor on the Blackfeet Reservation as tribal elders placed a stand-up headdress atop her head. 

Thousands of people who traveled across the country — and from Canada — to honor Gladstone watched in silence. 

Gladstone stood and embraced tribal leaders. Then, with one hand over her heart and the other holding onto Charlene Plume, the elder who made her headdress, Gladstone danced in a circle around the arbor. Members of the Women’s Stand-Up Headdress Society, tribal leaders, dignitaries, students, teachers and children followed behind.

The sound of drums boomed, and the crowd erupted. 

Gladstone, who grew up in Browning and East Glacier, recently rose to worldwide fame after starring in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” alongside Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. 

She made history, becoming the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe award for best actress and the first to be nominated for best actress at the Oscars. 

At Tuesday’s event — which included a grand entry, flag song, prayer, speeches from dignitaries, honor song and round dance — leaders thanked Gladstone for representing the Blackfeet Nation on the world stage and for being a role model for young people.

“Because of you, rez kids on every reservation here and in Canada can chase their dreams,” Councilman Everett Armstrong said at the event. “Students, take a look at this accomplishment — it’s possible.”

Councilman Robert DesRosier delighted in the fact that Gladstone “is just like us.”

“She’s us,” he told the crowd before turning to Gladstone. “Lily, welcome home.”

More than 50 members of the Women’s Stand-Up Headdress Society — a group of contemporary Blackfoot women in the U.S. and Canada who own such headdresses — traveled to Browning to celebrate Gladstone. Theda New Breast, a member of the society, said Tuesday marked the largest gathering of stand-up headdress members to date. I thought of making this kind of list for a while now, since in my notes I save writers when I like most/all their fics (instead of saving each work individually)

This list is going to be very long, I'm gonna try to add to each writer a little description of the type of work they usually write.

Should leave this as a disclaimer for all my fic rec posts, but always look at the tags and CW on each fic before reading!

Metru Nui Aesthetics

I’ve been thinking about how each metru is a slighly different flavour of sci-fi aesthetically speaking. (Heads up, the links go to a wiki unfortunately hosted on Fandom, don’t click if you wish to avoid that site) Ko-Metru: Cyber Glacier (fairly self explanatory)

Ga-Metru: Cyberprep x cybercore (with a slight Nautical influence in the lighthouse styled architecture)

Le-Metru: Retrofuturistic ( check out those mushroom towers)

Onu-Metru: Dark Aero x Hexatron ( lots of black tech with glowy bits)

Po-Metru: Post-Apocalyptic x Decopunk ( not literally post apocalyptic pre Great cataclysm, but evokes the aesthetic through the appearance of structures that are falling into disrepair or abandoned unfinished. But the art and architectural style seems to have an art deco influence)

Ta-Metru: Heatwave x Dieselpunk ( industrial factory looking structures combined with the glow of lava and furnaces)

The dieselpunk for Ta-Metru one’s not quite perfect, as I was looking for something that evokes factories and industry more than vehicles, and I feel like there’s maybe a missing component for Ga-metru as well ( it’s not quite solarpunk but perhaps something adjacent to it?)

Pakistan is drowning, and we need help

Since July of this year, Pakistan has been affected by heavy nonstop monsoons and is yet to stop. It is only getting worse. Rural areas in Balochistan, Sindh, KPK, Punjab and Gilgit Baltistan are the most affected.

As of September 4th, over 1300 people have died and over 500,000 homes have been destroyed along with livestock deaths and ruined infrastructure. The floods have left more than 33 million people affected.

Most of Balochistan is still submerged. Locals are forced to flee and cannot account for their missing relatives until much later. More than 100 districts all across the provinces have been impacted.

Quetta, a major city of Balochistan, has been cut off from the rest of the country as the roads and highways are destroyed.

We get monsoons every year and we are used to them but this is not normal. We are in our 8th monsoon cycle when we usually get 3-4 cycles.

Two of the worst-hit provinces – Balochistan and Sindh – have received 298mm and 689mm rains respectively this year, which is about 400 percent more than the 30-year average. (c)

Along with the floods, there are also landslides and glacier bursts that have claimed lives and made the situation worse.

People from other cities were unable to get in contact with their affected relatives because they did not have electricity. The cloud cover meant no solar power either.

There are more monsoon predictions till September. I don't know how we're going to come back from this.

This is worse than the 2010 floods and the government doesn't give a shit.

This is going to have disastrous impacts on our economy and society but what does it matter? after all, the people are only there to vote, right? :)

It is the volunteers and NGOs helping, it is the public. There was no help when Karachi flooded and people died and they don't care now either.

your post about potatoes in fantasy worlds made me base my primary fantasy continent off sudamérica so i could use fantasy versions of andean and amazonian fauna/flora. I'm still trying to figure out how to change the geography enough to have the big desert i want in the right area(andes get an offshoot that encircles a rain shadow desert in the central north is the best idea i have) but actually being forced to consider how native wildlife works and needing to create trade routes if i wanted imported crops was fun. i was also trying to figure out why the southern hemisphere has more hot climates than the north and something said it's because the south on earth has less landmass so i think having the northern hemisphere above it be mostly tropical works if I have mostly archipelagos? also every time i see a european based fantasy have potatoes or tomatoes i shake my head and scowl.

The reason why the Southern Hemisphere seems to have more hot climates is indeed simply because the continental parts don't spread that far South to actually cold southern latitudes. The only place that really sticks that far south to have a truly cold climate is the Patagonia. And of course, Antarctica, which by coinicidence, basically surrounds the South Pole.

Here is a map of "temperate" latitudes, or rather, latitudes between the tropics and the polar circles (as someone who lives here, or indeed an Australian can tell you, many places there are not "temperate" at all but more on that below). What is important here is that the southern hemisphere has less places closer to the pole, except, again, Antarctica, while the northern hemisphere has lots of land near the poles. This is why we don't have our equivalents of say, Siberia, for example. The closest thing is again, Patagonia. Honestly an underused place for worldbuilding, with the steppe, the glaciers, the temperate rainforests, and the recently extinct megafauna, but I digress.

You could in fact have a tropical "north" if you keep most of the northern hemisphere's landmasses near the equator (here I'm picturing some kind of big Indonesia or Caribbean, an area where tectonic plates collide and there's lots of volcanic islands and lands), and you could place a big continent in the South to make it a cold South. Interesting reversal on the cold North/warm South of most settings.

This would bring some interesting effects, though. Placing a big landmass on any pole (not a small one like Antarctica) would lead to glaciation, as land is "colder" or rather less moderated by ocean (more on that later) and glaciers grow, and glaciers and arid land have greater albedo, reflectivity, that is, and so they reflect more sunlight, thus those place become colder, and the glaciers keep growing, and so on, until there is an ice-age. I don't have the link where I read it with me, but I recall that continents shifting to polar latitudes might have triggered ice-ages in Earth's past.

Deserts are very tricky to place. The standard worldbuilding recommendation is that the interior of the continents are drier as you get away from the sea, and that mountain chains and high terrain serves as rainshadows that stop rain from the sea. However, there is a lot more to it. A LOT more.

You can find deserts even next to oceans, in the so-called "horse latitudes", the meeting points of the Hadley Cells that circulate air from the Equator to the subtropics and beyond. The details are a bit technical, but what this means basically is that they create jet streams of circulating air at 30° South and North, keeping the climate sunny, warm and dry. This is indeed where many of the world's coastal deserts are: Atacama, Kalahari, and of course, Australia.

Meanwhile, in the equatorial zone, the "trade winds" (because they have regular wind patterns that have historical formed major sea trade routes, worldbuilding hint!) converge in the Equator, forming rainy areas... but not quite that simple.

The Intertropical Convergence Zone, where these winds meet, ocsilates during the year, creating monsoons, but as always, there are lots of factors involved. In particular, given our real life scenario of rapid climate change and global warming, a warmer temperature means more intense ocsilations. This makes monsoon events sharper (more droughts and floods in those regions) and more strong La Niña/El Niño events, which are their own thing, influenced by the Pacific which is a huge factor in global climate.

And this brings me to ocean currents. Usually, being close to the ocean moderates the climate, making it more rainy and warm, or at least stable. However, if the surrounding sea is cool, it means less evaporation and less rainfall, especially if it's influenced by cool polar currents (this is the case of eastern Patagonia, for example, with the cold Malvinas Current). The opposite is the case in, for example, Europe, where the warm gulf stream moderates climate, making it warmer and rainer compared to the same latitudes in the US and Canada. I'll admit I'm not very well informed on how ocean currents work, but the depth and salinity of the ocean have much to do with it. What basically happens is that dense salty water sinks and and this works as a "conveyor belt" for warm less dense surface water to flow over it and over great distances. These currents are slow, but since the ocean is so massive, they move extensive amounts of heat across the world. I will admit defeat here and just say I don't wholly understand how it works, but I can tell you this; if your world has a less salty ocean, your currents will be less strong, which means that the differences of temperature between the poles and the tropics will be sharper as there are no strong currents to overall moderate temperature. If this is all too complex for you as it is to me, the quick cheat is just looking at this map: warm water flows from the equator, and cold water flows from the poles, and they create "gyres" around the oceans and the Equator, and cold currents contribute to colder and drier climates (note the Canary, Benguela and Peru currents, the Malvinas current is not shown for some reason...)

Did I forget something? Oh, yes. A colder climate of course, means less rainfall, because there is less evaporation and there is much water "trapped" in glaciers and snow. Which seems to be the case during the last ice ages. Rainforests and forests in general retreated as deserts expanded. In fact, the few forests that remained served as refugiums for species that only expanded again once the ice age was over. Some especulate that this might meant a 'weakening' of megafauna, as they were trapped in those refuges with lots of interbreeding and weakened populations when humans arrived on the scene. Now, there are some contradictions here and there, some researchers have said that the climate wasn't that dry and while I'm not an expert I tend to agree, many parts that are "extreme desert" there might be scrubland instead. But overall, it seems that colder times bring drier times too.

I'm still not done, but I'm almost done! According to the Biotic Pump theory, forests might also influence the climate and rainfall in a big way, basically, evapotranspiration (plants sweat, a lot, 90% of water through a plant evaporates to the atmosphere) in forests might actually create by itself the rainy environment where forests thrive, so for example, the Amazon is a rainforest BECAUSE of the forest there. I think with the increasing droughts here in South America we're seeing that theory proven in practice, as deforestation of the Mata Atlantica, the Chaco and the Amazon is causing less rainfall in the centre of the continent. Forests and plants also have a cooling effect, since they fix carbon dioxide, and also a bit of a warming effect, since they have darker albedo and so absorb more sunlight. I'm going to be very lazy and instead of reading a thousand papers say that they overall have a "moderating" effect.

Well, I could go on and on but I think I've already written way too much, so I'll leave you this to munch on a bit. It might seem like a lot, but when in doubt, you can always "eyeball" it by comparing real regions of Earth, and it will help you to create more interesting world than the omnipresent "spring-summer-fall-winter" temperate standard in so many settings.

I anxiously stood in front of HoneyDukes, waiting for Y/n to arrive, she's ten minutes late.

What if she decided to not come?

Did I push her into something she doesn't want?

Oh Merlin-

"Sorry I'm late! I had a run in with Hagrid and he was telling me about a new creature he found"

I turn to find Y/n walking up to me with a soft smile, her cheeks and nose are red from the cold air.

"Have you been waiting long?" She asks and I quickly shake my head.

"N-No...I can't believe you came" I whisper with a small smile and she gives me a confused look.

"Did you think I wouldn't?" She asks and I pause for a moment, unsure of my answer.

"Hermione..." she trails as she leans down next to my ear.

"I don't pleasure just any girl" she whispers and my face heats up at the comment.

"Shh!" I whisper back and she giggles into my ear, pulling me into a warm hug.

"Granger, I was literally whispering" she laughs out and I sigh, melting into her embrace.

It feels...right.

"Come on, it's cold out here. I'll buy you something hot and sweet...like you" Y/n winks as she pulls away and grabs my hand.

My finger link with hers as she pulls me into the shop, her eyes light up at all the choices.

I giggle as she pulls me to a secluded corner with a row of candies that had caught her eye.

"Hm...Pink Coconut Ice and Black Pepper Imps? That gives me an idea..." she whispers, a form of mischief in her eyes.

"What is going through your mind?" I ask and she gives me a sheepish smile. Y/n leans down to my ear and her breath hits my ear lobe, making me shiver.

"Something for us to try later" she chuckles and my face heats up once more.

"Come on, I'm buying" she says as she pulls me around the store again.

After an hour of perusing the shop, we left with two bags full of different candies and drinks for us to try.

"Ready for cavities?" Y/n asks and I giggle.

"I don't think my parents would be very proud of me" I laugh and she smiles, holding out her arm. I take it and she pulls me into her.

"I won't let you get cavities, but I'll gladly eat the rest if you won't" she giggles and I hum, watching the side of her face.

"Come on!" I laugh as we rush back to the castle.

We sat on the bed of the room of requirement, the candies and drinks sprawled between us.

"Are you really going to eat that?" I ask as she pulls out a jelly slug.

"Does the movement gross you out?" She jokes as a she hold out the candy, is squirms slowly in her hand.

I shudder at the sight and push away her hand, a loud laugh echos through the room and I smile widely.

Y/n eats the gummy and looks back down at the pile, my eyes travels down the line of sugar to two boxes.

"Why did you buy these?" I ask as I hold up the two boxes.

"You want to skip the candies to find out?" She asks, her devilish smile returning.

My face burns as dirty thoughts that enter my mind.

"A-Alight" I whisper as she quickly swept the sweets back into the bags.

"May I?" Y/n asks as her hand is held out for the boxes.

She takes a candy from both boxes and holds them out.

"Which one?" She asks and I gently take the pink one, popping it into my mouth.

Instantly the taste of coconut invades my tastebuds, but the feeling of coldness spreads around my mouth.

It feels like eating a box of mints and then drinking ice cold water.

"Open your mouth Granger" she whispers and I do, my steamy breath exhaling from my lips.

"Pink Coconut Ice, turns your mouth into a icy glacier" she laughs, popping her own candy into her mouth.

Her face scrunched as black smoke escapes her mouth.

"God, it's feels like I ate a jar of jalapeños" she coughs out and I giggle.

Y/n sticks out her tongue and it's black with red cracks that had small flames coming from it.

Suddenly she pushes me down into the bed, into a steamy kiss, quite literally.

The ice and fire that replaced our tongues causes steam to erupt from our noses. The sound of popping is muffled in our mouths as my tongue fights Y/n's.

When we pull apart, our tongues have returned to normal and a single string of saliva still connected us.

I feel her fingertips ghost my thighs as she pulls a pink candy from the box beside my head.

Her fingers disappear from my thigh and rise up to slowly remove my shirt.

"No bra again? I'm starting to think you don't own one" she giggles as steam flows out from her mouth.

"The first time was an accident" I argue and her chuckle turns dark, her lips attack my neck.

I gasp at the cold lick. Goosebumps rise over my body as her tongue trails down to my breasts.

"So you don't wear one for me? Naughty girl"

Her lips sucks my nipple harshly as her icy mouth licks and nibbles on it, I moan loudly into the empty room.

My fingers slip through her hair as I shut my eyes in pleasure.  Her body pushes my legs apart as she removes her mouth from my breast.

As she descends, my pants and underwear are pulled off and my entrance is exposed and eager for the girl in front me.

"Are you ready for my experiment?" She asks and I look down to her, the Black Pepper candy is held between her fingers.

I could feel my entrance quiver at the sight of her hungry mouth, I nod and watch as she eats the candy.

Black smoke erupts from her mouth once again, as she leans towards my core.

She slowly pushes her tongue into me and I gasp loudly, arching my back.

The heat from her tongue turns my vision blurry, my moans escape me with no problem.

The feeling of Y/n humming as her tongue vibrates inside me, makes my eyes rolls into the back of my head.

My back arches from the bed again as my legs wrap around the girls head.

Her fingers reach up and starts to rub and flick my clit harshly.

"I going to-" I'm cut off as a loud moan escapes me again, the knot in my stomach tightening.

"Y-Y/n!" I scream, my legs shaking violently as white spots take over my vision.

I came into Y/n's mouth, her tongue makes a popping and sizzling sound as she cleans me up gently.

It's quiet as I catch my breath, I feel a hand intertwine with mine and I open my eyes to see Y/n looking over me.

"Open your mouth"

I slowly open it and a string of spit falls from her lips and into my mouth.

Coconut and myself swirl in my mouth.

"Good girl"

Dog repeatedly escapes Up North shelter, sneaks into nursing home

An abused stray mutt kept trying to move himself into a senior care facility. So the nurses there had to figure out what to do about him.

He’d had enough of being at the animal shelter, so Scout the dog climbed over one tall fence and then another, crossed a busy highway in the darkness, entered the automatic doors of a nursing home down the road, walked unnoticed into the lobby, hopped onto a couch, curled into a ball and quietly went to sleep for the night. An astonished nurse there found him the next morning. She called Antrim County Animal Control, whose shelter happens to be just down the road. And they discovered that he'd escaped from there the night before. Scout was a stray mutt. He had no identity, no history. The shelter staff gave him his new name, but otherwise they knew nothing about him, though they noticed he had the distinct demeanor of an abused dog. Somebody apparently once shot him too, with BBs or birdshot, because his jowl still had some kind of round pellets embedded in it. You couldn’t see them, but you could feel them if he let you touch him.   The sheriff came and took him back to the shelter.

But a few nights later there was Scout, back on that same couch in the nursing home lobby. Somehow he again scaled a 10-foot chain-link fence, then a 6-foot solid privacy fence, crossed a highway without getting run over, entered the front door unnoticed, jumped onto the same couch as before and made himself at home for the night. A call was placed again. He was brought back to the shelter again. Just a couple of nights after that, Scout was back on the couch for the third time. And the staff had a decision to make.

Lost and found

Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility is a long-term medical care residence about an hour northeast of Traverse City. It cares mostly for seniors, some of whom have terminal illnesses, or dementia, or simply nowhere else to go or nobody to look after them. There are 82 beds split between several smaller households. For some reason, this is the place Scout the dog decided to make his home. “I’m a person who looks at outward signs, and if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be,” said Marna Robertson, 57, the nursing home’s administrator. “He did that one time, two times, three times, and obviously that’s something that you should pay attention to. And I asked the staff, ‘Well, he wants to be here. Would anybody like to have a dog?’”

The staff formally adopted him. Suddenly the nursing home had its own pet. And the residents were delighted. “I think it reminds them of being home,” said Rhonda Thomczak, 49, the administrative assistant at Glacier Hill, the household where Scout was first discovered. “When you’re home you have your pets, and you don’t get to have that here. Having a dog around makes it feel like home.”
