I search on Youtube for how to do something.
Video after video is presented. People with perfect makeup and perfect workshops speak through perfect focus with perfectly edited audio. They show their tools. Tell you where to buy them. Show you their materials in perfect lighting. Where to buy them. Buy. Buy. Buy. In their perfect tones and scripted words. They teach you the craft, sure, but you leave the video thinking you are unable to do the work because you do not have the money to buy the perfectly manufactured tools they presented so cleanly and perfectly. It feels almost like an extended advertisement.
But if I scroll down, I find the videos of people with mussed hair, life on their faces. Their workshop is a scramble of materials and tools, the audio is crunchy and the video goes out of focus sometimes. They speak either in swift, excited tones or stilted and awkward. They show you their tools, say how they got them from a friend or they go off on a tangent on how you can make one yourself, maybe they tell you that if you don’t have this tool, you can do this instead. They teach you the craft, show you how to fix the mistakes, they tell you how and why, and the audio fuzzes as they tilt their work towards the camera to show you what is happening.
There’s something real and comfortable about the second kind of video. Accessible like a stranger pulling an extra pair of knitting needles from their bag in the waiting room to show you how to do a few stitches.

see normally i try to avoid and dislike using "they're ooc" as a criticism bc it's been historically used to flatten out a character's flaws. i want to use any possible in universe route to explain what's going on regardless of whether it aligns w authorial intent or not. anyway i think ten is ooc in girl in the fireplace
