Glowing Plume ☁️🌅✨ • One of my favorite evenings of the Meradalir eruption was on August 15th, 2022. The weather was calm, so the sulphur dioxide plume coming from the crater stuck around and turned orange-red at sunset. It was a challenge to get the glowing plume and the crater in one frame, but the first shot is a 15-shot drone panorama so that you can imagine the massive scale of the area. The sunset made the whole area glow and showed how beautiful the landscape is around the 2021 and 2022 eruption sites. I can’t really imagine a more epic spot for an eruption to start! Kann man in Island Wale streicheln?

Im August werde ich das Land aus Feuer und Eis bereisen. Endlich. Es ist für mich ein Ort auf der Welt, den ich in meinem Leben unbedingt gesehen haben muss. Der Wunsch entstand, als ich das erste mal in meinem Leben auf einen Isländer traf. Das dieser Mensch nun seit weit über 15 Jahren eine besondere Rolle in meinem Leben spielt und wir es trotzdem nie geschafft haben zusammen in sein Heimatland zu reisen, liegt wohl daran, dass wir es vorgezogen haben Cocktails schlürfend irgendwo in der Sonne zu liegen, anstatt bei unberechenbarem Wetter im Hochland Islands -wie übrigens schon tausendmal geschehen- im Schnee festzustecken und womöglich dabei zu erfrieren. 

Bei unserem ersten Kennenlernen erzählte er mir von der atemberaubenden Natur Islands, von Vulkanen und Geysiren. Doch das war es nicht, dass bei mir diesen großen Wunsch auslöste die Insel zu bereisen. Als er anfing über Trolle, Elfen und Feen zu sprechen musste ich minutenlang darüber lachen, dass er in keinem Moment über die Existenz dieser kleinen Wesen zweifelte. In diesem Moment erkannte ich in seinen leuchtenden Augen die Magie die über diesem Land schweben musste und mein Entschluss stand fest, dass ich mich auf die Suche nach diesen kleinen Wesen begeben werde.

Davon musste ich im Prinzip nur noch meine Kinder begeistern, die sich unseren Sommerurlaub dieses Jahr einfach anders vorgestellt hatten. Sie erfuhren von meinen Reiseplänen, die Insel in 12 Tagen mit einem 4x4 Allrad Geländewagen auf der berühmten 3000 Kilometer langen Route über die Ringstraße alleine zu umrunden und demonstrierten bei Oma und Opa und bekamen natürlich hierbei volle Unterstützung. Als der Zeitpunkt gekommen war ihnen beichten zu müssen, dass wir neue Winterjacken und Wanderschuhe brauchen, weil das Wetter in Island unberechenbar ist, war der Lava Ausbruch daheim perfekt. Doch die größte aber zum Glück auch letzte melodramatische Aufführung, die man sonst nur von Leonardo Di Caprio im Film Titanic kennt, als das Schiff den Eisberg rammt, wurde bei der Szene abgespielt, bei der ich ihnen unser 5-Sterne-Hotel präsentierte:  unser Dachzelt. Einige Tage war Ruhe und ich versuchte ihnen Island mit seinen Sehenswürdigkeiten geschmackvoll zu machen.

Eines Morgens kam dann mein “Kleiner” und fragte mich,  ob wir in Island Wale streicheln können. Mit dieser Frage merkte ich, dass die Magie dieses Landes auch endlich die Kinder erreicht hatte. Nun steht unserem Road Trip nichts mehr im Weg. Ich habe vor über unsere Reise zu Bloggen und würde mich freuen, wenn ich andere Alleinreisende hierdurch inspirieren kann.
