it's meiru's birthday month, so i had to do a special memo-and-a-half! …that is INSANELY BITTERSWEET, of course, mwa ha ha
aaaand bonus fictional exe gacha blather under cut:
today we think about... the homescreen. tbh, my favorite part of a gacha when it's done right!
Tumblr media
so this scribble borrows a lot from aga's office homescreen since presumably the navis are 3D models. it's the same idea of a large decoratable space where the characters are doin' office work and/or otherwise interacting with the area. except lol lmao the teams of whatever are seven big so i was assuming it is seven navis and one operator on this one cybercafe homescreen. i imagine operators are live2D to make a clear differentiation between navis and operators, so that's slightly less phone-killing, but...
after i drew this, i went back in and realized that while the liberation team in the story is seven-man, the liberation teams in gameplay cap at five, which means your team that will appear on homescreen would also only be five large. so, hey, that's a bit less likely to make the phone chug!
you have your trio chatting in the nook, your one other standing navi typing on a screen to the right, and your lead blorbo staaaaaaring back at you. with your side-profile-until-you-swap-to-their-view live2D operator on the screen behind the coffee bar. (this also makes it easier to see both the navichat and that it's a coffee bar, because there aren't two other typing navis to clog the space.) (...actually i wonder if the thing to do isn't to make that secondary navi be the barista instead of do actual paperwork lmao. or reduce the nook convo to two so there's still a dedicated paperworker.)
i have yet to think of further homescreen functionality besides it needs to be able to take AR pictures, buuut the way your party is displayed is most important, anyway. lmao

Hikari Twins Sickfic
Disclaimer: I am emetophobic and part of my therapy to help me heal is writing about throwing up and what I believe is the proper response to help me get out of my head. That type of illness is the focus of this story, its not in depth but it does happens so please be mindful. Scene begins under the cut. Thanks <3
"How are you feeling Nii-San?" Netto asked as he sat down on the bed.
"I'm okay." Saito yawned. "I'm a little tired."
"Take a nap! It might make you feel better." Netto settled onto the pillow beside his twin.
"Okay." Saito nodded and eventually laid down as well, resting his head on Netto's shoulder.
The older twin had a small procedure for his chest and was doing well, just in the recovery phase.
Saito stared at the ceiling for awhile before eventually being lured to sleep by the sound of his twin's soft breathing.
It was an extended amount of time before Saito finally woke up. He didn’t know why he had woken up, and was slightly frustrated with his sudden awakening, but yawned as he sat up.
"Oh you're awake Nii-San!" Netto said.
Saito glanced and noticed Netto was across the room at the PC (hopefully working on homework).
Saito simply nodded. He didn’t feel right. His throat was warm and his mouth was watering.
"You okay Nii-San?"
"Um...I don't feel good." Saito looked down.
Netto's expression softened. He was hoping the nap would have helped because Saito had mostly been miserable. "What's wrong?"
"Got a weird feeling."
"Like what?" Netto asked. His brother hadn't been human for very long so he was still adjusting to everything in his new body.
"Like its-" And that was unfortunately all Saito could get out before he suddenly threw up.
Netto was immediately by his side, rubbing small circles on his back and holding his hair out the way. He now understood what Saito was trying to tell him.
It seemed to last forever and Saito was frustrated as he had been sitting in the bed. Now there was more stuff to clean.
"Easy Nii-San. It's okay." Netto said softly.
Saito shook his head as he choked back a sob. This sucked!
"Mom! Nii-San's sick!" Netto called as he moved to help Saito lean forward.
"I'm coming dear!" Haruka called back as her footsteps begin to travel up the stairs. It was shortly a minute later when she arrived at the twin's room.
"Oh sweetie." Haruka said as she joined them.
"I'm s-sorry." Saito whispered.
"No apologies." Haruka shushed him. "Netto, let's move Saito-San into the bathroom, I'll take care of the bed okay?"
"Okay!" Netto nodded as Haruka helped Saito out of the bed.
Netto picked his twin up to carry him to the bathroom.
Haruka followed after them with a fresh set of pajamas and water. "Call me if you need me."
Netto and Saito nodded as Haruka left to start cleanning. Netto helped Saito out of his clothes and after a quick shower, helped him into new pajamas.
"Feeling any better Nii-San?"
"No." Saito said hoarsely. Now his throat was hurting too. "I just gave you and mom more work. I'm horrible." The older twin pressed his face into his hands.
"Stop Nii-San. That's not true. You're sick and recovering from surgery. Not only that you're still getting used to having a human body. Things like this happen."
"But your bed-"
"It's fine, worse things have happened to it!" Netto laughed.
"So stop worrying okay?"
"O-Okay." Saito said finally as he nodded. "Thank you Netto-Kun."
"Of course." Netto smiled. "Come on, you need to brush your teeth too."
When the twins came back the bed was made once more and everything was clean and pretty looking (the Haruka touch).
"Back to bed for you dear." Haruka ushered her oldest back into the bed.
As much as Saito wanted to protest he did as was told.
After getting situated, Haruka kissed them both on the head. "You know to call me if you need anything."
They both nodded and with that she left. Saito laid back down and Netto sat up beside him to keep him company.
Their mother had left a basin just in case Saito wasn't feeling well again. Which in the end, Saito was very grateful for as his stomach decided it was not done with him.
Netto was of course ever by his side holding him steady as he clutched the basin tight, hoping and praying the worst would be over soon because the gagging made his chest hurt worse.
"Why...why do...do you stay?" Saito asked quietly as he inhaled as he coughed once more. "Isn't...it gross?"
"I stay because you need me." Netto said instantly as he continued rubbing circles on Saito's back. "How could I leave you when you need me the most? Also you can and would do the same for me. How many times have you stayed by my side whether you were in the PET or not, doing whatever you could to make me feel better when I was stuck in bed? That's what you do when you care about someone."
Saito felt his eyes watering and that he wanted to cry.
"If you're done I can go get Mom."
Saito nodded and Netto called for their mother. Haruka came within a minute's notice, told the twin's she was proud of them, and left to clean the basin out.
Saito mindlessly thought about how his mother was a hero for how she wordlessly took care of them and never complained. She was too nice and deserved the world. When she came back she checked Saito for a fever which he thankfully didn't have.
"No fever which is good. Let me get you a ginger ale and crackers." She handed Saito a towel to clean his face with.
Saito nodded but he felt very tired and laid back down as soon as she left the room. The good thing about being twins was that he didn't have to ask Netto if he could use him as pillow or if they could cuddle. Netto already knew.
And so Saito cuddled up into Netto's side using his twin's stomach as a pillow.
"Comfortable?" Netto asked softly as he put his arm around his older twin.
"Yeah...back hurts." Saito replied tiredly.
"Unfortunately not surprised though." Netto took a pillow and placed it behind Saito. "Try to get some rest if you can. I'll be here."
"M'kay. Thanks Netto...you're the best."
Netto smiled. "Anytime Nii-San. Love you."
"Love you too." And when Haruka came back Saito was thankfully fast asleep.
The oldest twin slept through the whole night easily and the next morning woke up feeling a bit better just empty and exhausted.
"How's my dears doing?" Haruka asked the next morning. Netto hadn't come to get her since the evening so she hoped everything had been alright.
"Better." Saito said hoarsely. "Just weak. And head hurts."
"I'm glad your stomach is better sweetie. Now we just gotta finish letting your chest recover."
Netto was snoring and fast asleep beside Saito. He deserved all the rest he wanted, Saito thought as he squeezed his twin's hand.
"How about a really light breakfast? With some gatorade?"
Saito nodded. His stomach growled now that it had stopped being a jerk. "Yes please."
"I'll get right to it. You guys stay put."
"Can you make Netto hot chocolate?"
"Sure thing. I'm sure he'd love that." Haruka smiled gently.
"I can't make it myself but I just want to thank him even in a small way." Saito smiled a bit. "He rarely gets to have that so."
"Of course. Anything else?"
"No ma'am thank you."
"That's what Momma's are for Saito." Haruka kissed his head once more and left to start breakfast.
Saito sat up in bed and watched a little tv on the laptop making sure to be quiet so Netto could stay sleeping. "I love you Netto. A lot. You mean the world to me."
"Love you...too...Nii-San..." Netto slurred in his sleep but smiled.

A Special Gift
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BEST BOYS!
Summary: It's Lan's birthday and he eagerly awaits for his father to come home early from work. What he doesn't know is he'll be getting a special gift from his father...
Timeline: MMBN gameverse pre-canon
Rating: G
Read it on FF.net /// AO3
“Happy birthday, Hub!”
MegaMan smiles almost sadly at the words. For the last few years since he gained consciousness, he’s only heard that phrase coming from his father. Considering his father and a select few SciLab employees are the only individuals who interact with him, he doesn’t see a reason to expect anything more on this day.
But his feelings on the matter aren’t important because this birthday is meant to be a very special one. And not just for him…but for his brother too.
“Ready for your present?” Yuichiro asks in a slightly giddy way most fathers do on their child’s day of birth.
MegaMan raises an eyebrow, his smile wry, “Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to ask if I’m ready to be a present?”
His father chuckles in response, “True, but I feel this is as much of a present to you as it is to Lan. After all, you two are finally going to be reunited for good.”
The blue Navi feels something inside his being warm up at the words. While Lan comes to visit SciLab and watches Yuichiro work with programs, MegaMan is not always conscious to truly get to know him—having to be put in sleep mode as his father works on him. He’s also been in a base form too, the details of what he will end up looking like still a mystery to many. To his brother, he’s just a special “custom” Navi that his father is working on, and maybe one day he would be operated by Lan.
One day is now today, June 10th, or the day Hub and Lan Hikari were born. And currently, Lan is at home with their mother, probably impatiently waiting for his father to come home. What he doesn’t know is that Papa would be giving him a very special birthday present—a brand new NetNavi.
“So, are you ready?” Yuichiro asks MegaMan again, as if he’s afraid the answer would be a no.
MegaMan smiles to reassure any doubts his father has. “Yes, I’m ready!”
Papa smiles in satisfaction but then it lowers considerably as he looks off to something on his desk, “I’m going to warn you, I’ll have to put you in a box. It’ll be dark and may feel cramped… Maybe I should put you in sleep mode until Lan opens it?”
MegaMan shrugs, no preference in his mind. “I don’t mind, Papa. It’ll be nice to wake up to Lan’s excited face.”
That seems to bring a sparkle into his Papa's eyes, “Oh yes, I think that would be a nice sentiment! Alright, we’ll do it. Have a good nap, Hub!”
“I’ll see you when I wake up, Papa.” And with that, the PET goes into sleep mode, the screen darkening, giving no indication if the Navi is truly there or not.
Despite the anticipation he feels, there’s a small sense of sadness in Yuichiro’s heart. How he wishes things to be different… Instead of putting his first born in a box to be opened up by the second born, he should be celebrating the day with both of them alive and together.
But fate had other plans, and there is nothing more he can do about it. With a sigh, he puts together the package, carefully placing MegaMan’s PET inside the box before lovingly wrapping it up in dark blue paper; a large red ribbon tied into a neat bow as the final touch. If his wife were here, she would laugh at how careful and precise he had performed the task, and he would have protested in response. This isn’t something you could throw together haphazardly, after all!
Once he’s finished, Yuichiro clocks out and says his goodbyes to his colleagues, making excited steps toward his car to make the drive back to ACDC Town. As he gently places the giftwrapped PET in the passenger seat, he starts the car, thinking of Lan and hoping his son isn’t driving his mother too mad with the impatience of his father’s arrival.
-----------
A little boy, now the age of 8 as of today, crawls onto the couch in his living room to get a better look out of the window. He cranes his head left and right, biting his lip in worry when he doesn’t see a familiar car.
“Lan Hikari, get down from there!” his mother chides him from her place in the kitchen. Her hands are on her hip and there’s a displeased frown on her beautiful face.
“But Mama, Papa’s still not here! Where is he?” little Lan asks as he continues to stare out the window.
“Even though he made arrangements to leave work early, he still has to work regardless. Give him some time. He’ll be here,” Haruka soothed. She won’t let it show, but she has been antsy all morning. She and Yuichiro had discussed this day many times and her husband had told her earlier in the week that all his preparations are finished—Hub, or rather MegaMan, would be coming home today.
She hopes his words still remain true. She wants this “reunion” as much as him. She makes a silent prayer that the upcoming meeting between her boys does indeed happen and it goes smoothly…
“Besides,” she continues, keeping her tone light, “your party guests will be here any second. I’ll need you to entertain them while I finish preparing the snacks and your cake. You can’t be a good host if you’re constantly looking out that window.”
As soon as she says this, the doorbell rings and Haruka gasps. “That’s them! Lan, be a dear and greet them, I’ve still got much to do!”
“Okay…” Lan says and jumps off the couch to make his way to the front door. Opening it, he’s greeted by a handful of his classmates, Mayl Sakurai at the forefront as she beams at him and holds out a present wrapped in light blue paper.
“Happy birthday, Lan!” Mayl and the rest of the guests yell in unison. Lan gives them all a toothy grin as he waves them in. One by one they pass him, each giving him their own form of greeting.
Little Yai Ayanokoji struts pass him, the gift in her hands larger than her body as she politely acknowledges that he has a very nice home. Behind her comes Dex Oyama, who sticks his tongue out at his fellow 8-year-old. Lan reciprocates the action. He and Dex have known each other for forever, and while Lan considers him a friend, there are moments when Dex acts like a jerk. His ego only got worse when his father gave him a custom NetNavi named GustMan a few months ago. Since then, Dex has been insufferable and Lan has been waiting for the day he could finally show him who’s boss!
Speaking of NetNavis…
Once all the children are through the door, Lan steps out to look each way down the street. Nope… No Papa yet…
“Lan! Come back inside and entertain your guests!”
The child jumps, rushing back inside his house, “Coming Mama!”
-----------
Lan fidgets in his seat at the head of the table his mother set up during the time he and the rest of the children had been preoccupied with games in his backyard. At the time, he had hope that all the running around would take away all his anxious energy but, sadly, it hasn’t done any good. His father still hasn’t come home yet and he’s becoming increasingly restless. And while the snacks his mother made for the special occasion did help to distract him—his mother’s cooking always being excellent—now that his plate is empty, he’s aware of the pit that rests in his stomach.
Where is Papa?
He promised…
To his left is Mayl, who catches his eyes and gives him a concerned look. He responds to her with a half-smile, trying to give the impression he’s fine. It doesn’t really work, much to the boy’s dismay.
“What’s the matter?” she whispers, trying to be discreet. Thankfully, none of the other children notice them as they’re too consumed with the snacks and their own conversations.
“Nothing…” Lan initially lies, but then thinks better of it and confesses, “It’s just…Papa was supposed to be here by now.”
Mayl frowns. Trying to encourage her best friend, she says, “He’ll be here! He’s probably just late. Like you are when you come to school.”
Lan rolls his eyes at her minor jab at his punctuality (or lack thereof), but then reconsiders the possibility. His father always works a lot, even admitting at some points that he gets so sidetracked with one task, he forgets about another and needs to stay later than he initially planned. It wouldn’t be too farfetched to think something came up at work and it has caused him to be tardy…
It makes sense, but he wishes his Papa would just be here right now! It’s his birthday! He wants to spend it with everyone he loves…
Everyone…
Subconsciously, Lan raises a hand and rubs his chest. Mayl sees the action. “Are you alright?”
“Huh?” he asks, not realizing what he had done. Once he sees where his hand is placed, he lowers it, “Yeah…I do that sometimes. Mama calls it a nervous habit.”
He’s not sure why he does it, it just happens whenever he feels upset or lonely. There were even times that the action happens when he wasn’t feeling anything in particular. It’s almost like his heart is crying out for somebody…but for who he can’t say. His Papa he assumes, but he feels like there’s someone else… Like maybe there should be someone else who is supposed to—
“What are you two whispering about?” a voice interrupts his thoughts.
Lan and Mayl jump and turn their heads to see Dex eyeing them in suspicion on the other side of Lan at the table. Lan grimaces and takes his hand away from his chest. “Nothing, Dex!”
“Hey, that’s no way to talk to your party guest!”
“Lan was just saying he hopes his Papa comes home before it’s time for cake,” Mayl smoothly fibs, not just to keep Lan from embarrassment, but so a fight doesn’t break out between the two young rivals. Lan shoots her an appreciative glance before he decides to turn his head and view said cake.
“Oh yeah, that cake sure does look delicious!” Dex says, also turning his attention away from everyone to eye the sweet treat. “Lan’s Mama makes the best cakes!”
Lan nods, his mouth watering at the sight of the strawberry sponge cake. If there’s one thing he and Dex could agree on, it’s that nothing is better than Mama’s sponge cake! “She does!”
Suddenly, everyone hears the sound of the front door opening and footsteps walking through the threshold.
“I’m home!”
“Papa!” Lan screams, jumping from his chair and running to his father, his party guests forgotten in the midst of his excitement. “Papa’s home!”
Yuichiro laughs as his 8-year-old son practically slams into him. With a giftbox in one hand, he uses the other to carefully scoop the boy up. Lan giggles at the action and happily wraps his little arms around his father’s neck. Yuichiro happily returns the embrace.
As this happens, Haruka smiles, “Welcome home, Honey.”
“Hi, Dear!” the scientist greets his wife. To Lan he says, “And hello, Lan! Happy birthday, son!”
“Thanks, Papa!” Lan says. It’s then he spots the present in his father’s hand and starts to practically vibrate in excitement. “A present! You got me a present? Can I open it now? Please, please, please?”
Yuichiro laughs harder at the show of boundless energy, “Well aren’t you excited? I don’t see why not. Do you, Mama?”
Haruka sighs and puts her hands on her hips, “You know the rules, Lan. Cake first, then presents.”
Lan juts his bottom lip out, his demeanor deflating considerably, “Aww, but Mama!”
Her face goes stern for a quick second, ready to chastise her son, but then her eyes lock with her husband’s. For a very brief moment, they share what appears to be a silent conversation. Lan doesn’t quite pick up on it, though, as he’s surprised when he hears what his father says next.
“I think we can make an exception this one time, Haruka,” he says patiently. He then indicates the present to her, “After all, this gift is very special, wouldn’t you say?”
Still with his son in one arm, Yuichiro hands Haruka the present with the other. A small but soft smile forms on her face as she gazes at it. To Lan’s confusion, his Mama runs her fingers over it, almost lovingly. That’s weird… Why would she—?
Haruka sighs again, but this time in a wistful way, and then hands the gift to her son. Lan receives the package, not quite understanding what just happened. Has his Mama changed her mind? And why does it suddenly look like she might cry…?
“Your Papa is right,” she declares, any unshed tears she had now gone. “You should open this one first since it’s special. We can have the cake afterwards, and then you can open the rest of the gifts. Does that sound fair?”
The strange moment forgotten, Lan absolutely beams at his mother and goes to reach over to hug her, practically falling from his father’s arms in his haste. The parents laugh at his antics and work together to keep their son upright with a group embrace. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
“Haha, you’re welcome,” Mama says. “But you should open it at the table. You’ve kept your friends waiting long enough.”
Lan nods, “Okay!”
He rushes back to his chair, ignoring his classmates’ curious stares. They, too, are also excited to see what this “special” present could be. Lan’s so giddy to open a present his Papa got him, he doesn’t take the time to appreciate the wrapping. He instantly rips the bow and paper apart to get to the box. Setting it on the table, he places his hands on the lid and lifts it up; Mayl, Dex, Yai, and the rest of the children present watching in anticipation on what the contents of the box will be…
The birthday boy stares in awe at what he sees. A shiny new PET gleams back at him. With gentle hands he picks it up by the handle, taking all the details in as he runs his fingers over the covered screen, which he decides to open up. Gazing at the contents, he presses the button he knows will turn the PET on. He holds his breath as he waits, watching the screen come to life as the homepage features begin to set up.
It’s then that a small light appears, and after it dims, Lan is met by a figure in blue. His appearance seems to be older than Lan, but still childlike (maybe 11 or 12?). His jumpsuit is dark blue with cyan lines down the sides and yellow shoulder pads; the emblem in the middle of his chest adorning the Hikari family crest on it. On his hands and feet are gloves and boots in a lighter blue than the jumpsuit. On his head is a blue helmet with cyan ridges and yellow squares in the middle; the sides of the helmet being the same emblem as what’s on his chest.
His eyes open up and a bright green meets Lan’s brown ones. If he pays attention, the boy can see some kind of emotion swirling through them…but what emotion it is, he can’t say for sure. The Navi gives the child a soft smile before he speaks in a calm but confidant voice.
“Hello, my name is A.I. Navigation Program MegaMan.EXE. I’ll be your NetNavi. It’s nice to finally meet you, Lan! Happy birthday!”
There’s a small beat of silence as Lan takes it all in before he lets out an ecstatic squeal. His classmates and parents watch in amusement as the boy once again takes himself out of his chair and begins jumping around, holding the PET close to his chest. He feels an abundance of happiness right now, so much so, that the strange feeling in his chest he felt beforehand seems to have disappeared now that he has his new friend MegaMan!
“I knew it! I knew it!” he repeats, “I just knew Papa would get me a Navi. And look at you! You’re so cool!”
A blush appears on MegaMan’s face as he puts a hand behind his head in embarrassment. “Oh please, you flatter me…”
It’s then that the other children in the house get out of their chairs to gather around the birthday boy. They marvel at the PET, trying to get a glimpse at the Navi inside, all the while making their own comments:
“Oh, wow, he looks so cool!”
“He’s kind of small though, don’t you think?”
“But he’s cute!”
“Can I hold your PET, Lan?”
“If Lan’s Papa made him, maybe he’s super strong!”
MegaMan’s blush intensifies at the extra attention, suddenly feeling awkward. He had honestly expected to wake up just to his twin, not what seems to be the entire neighborhood—he isn’t prepared for such compliments and comments.
“What’s the big deal?” comes the sour remark from Dex. “He’s just a scrawny thing. There’s no way he could stand up to my GutsMan!”
Lan bristles, an intense feeling of offense taking over. No one talks about his new friend that way!
“You’re wrong!” he challenges, “MegaMan is going to be the strongest Navi ever! He’s gonna be way better than GutsMan!”
MegaMan, in shock by the boy’s action, holds up his arms in a form of placation, “W-Wait a minute now—”
“Oh yeah?” Dex retaliates, “We’ll see about that! You and me, Lan, we’re gonna NetBattle just to see who’s number one!”
“Bring it!” Lan says, his cocky attitude showing out.
“Lan, hold on, we don’t even have BattleChips!” MegaMan protests in vain. Of all the things to expect today, his new operator challenging the first person he saw isn’t on his list…
“Boys, calm down!” Haruka calls out, much to the blue Navi’s relief. “I don’t want any fighting in my house, especially not today. Now, everyone, get back into your seats! It’s time for cake!”
At the mention of cake, all the children cheer and rush back to their seats. Lan and Dex nod in understanding, their rivalry momentarily put on hold in favor of their appetites. “Yes ma’am!”
Once Lan is comfortable at his spot again, he carefully places MegaMan next to him where everyone could get a good look at his newly acquired NetNavi. He giggles as he watches MegaMan stare at all the faces before him in awe. “What do you think?”
The blue Navi jumps slightly and turns back to his operator, “W-Well, it’s kind of strange. All this is…different.” He’s not lying by saying that. He’s spent the last 7 years of his life confined in a lab with hardly anyone but his father for company (and before this life, it was confined to a hospital…). Seeing all the friendly faces around…it’s overwhelming, but not unwelcome at all.
He likes it.
Lan nods his head, “I think I get it. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it! After all, we’re gonna be together for a long time, right?”
MegaMan blinks and his body relaxes, a genuine smile gracing his features. Yes, this is what he’s wanted for so long, to finally be able to be by his brother’s side. He’ll cherish it for as long as he’s able to.
This gift is just as much his as it is Lan's...
Almost on instinct, he presses a palm to the PET’s screen. “Of course, Lan. Together forever.”
Lan returns his smile and places his own hand on the screen, his boyish mirth practically palpable.
Their attention is suddenly brought to Mama, who comes back to the table with the anticipated birthday cake.
“Alright everyone!” Yuichiro says, his voice showing his delight at the events of the day, “Let’s sing to the birthday boy!”
Everyone around the table begins to sing as Haruka places the strawberry cake in front of her son. Lan grins toothily at the attention as MegaMan watches almost nostalgically. He turns his gaze over to the many faces once more, taking in their voices as they sing. Engrossed by the moment, he thinks that if he concentrates hard enough, he could pretend that everyone is singing happy birthday to the both of them…
But sadly, no one except his parents know that today is his birthday too…
Lan can’t even know… Not yet at least…
But maybe someday…
Not wanting to dwell on these feelings anymore, he schools his face into one of content and happiness. Meeting his twin’s gaze, MegaMan gives Lan a brilliant smile. “Happy birthday, Lan!”
Lan’s smile is just as bright as he replies, “Thanks, MegaMan! This is the best birthday ever!”
MegaMan can't help but agree.
“Happy birthday to you!”

When I said that a young Haruka lived rent free in my head, I meant those doodles (and a couple bit more than a couple others that I didn't bother to find) live rent free in my folders. Maybe one day I'll actually clean them and turn them into actual drawings. But, more importantly, I should learn to draw dogs.
And babies. But yeah, especially dogs.

Little Heartbeats - Part 1
Just those little heartbeats you get when you think about that “special someone”. A two-parter focusing on Lan and Mayl’s thoughts about that day.
Read on AO3
Part 1 focuses on Lan’s side.

“Lan! Dinner’s ready!”
“Coming, Mom,” Lan’s voice called from upstairs.
As Haruka settled two bowls of katsu curry on the table, she heard the sound of Lan’s footsteps as the young brunette made his way down the stairs and into the dining area. He paused once to sniff the air before his stomach let out a loud growl, as if urging him to hurry up. He then made a mad dash and scrambled up to his seat, his eyes sparkling and mouth watering at the sight of his favourite dish ever!
“Your father’s busy as usual today, so he won’t be back until later tonight,” his mother told him. “But I made sure that there would be plenty of leftovers for the both of you tomorrow.”
Lan frowned a little. “That’s too bad,” he mumbled. “I was kind of looking forward to having him home tonight.”
Of course, Lan looked up to his dad as well as his gramps, the late Tadashi Hikari who founded the Cyberworld as it was known as today. But he was none too fond of being holed up and stressed out about coming up with whatever new theories or experiments would come to his brain. That was one of several reasons why he chose to become a NetBattler to begin with.
He pushed those thoughts aside as he began shovelling the katsu curry into his mouth. But he didn’t clear a quarter of his plate when Haruka decided to break the peaceful silence he needed. “So, how was your day?”
“It was fine,” was all the boy could manage. He deliberately guzzled down more of the curry, almost choking on some of the bits that stuck themselves in his airway. Nevertheless, he kept his gaze fixed on his meal, aware of his mother’s look of suspicion.
“Was it really?” his mother pressed on.
“Y-yeah.”
Haruka narrowed her eyes even more until they were tiny brown slits. She then sighed as she proceeded to eat her meal. “If you say so,” she said. Even so, she still kept one eye on Lan and her ears open, just in case he had anything else to blurt out or had anything else on his mind.
Her suspicions were confirmed as Lan finally finished the curry and pushed it aside. He then proceeded to gulp down some tea that was seated next to his empty dish before cradling the half-empty cup in his hands. As he did, an image flashed in his mind: an image of none other than his best friend Mayl, bearing a sweet smile on her face and cheeks that were as pink as her skirt. Her eyes were streaked with bits of ruby and gold while her short, maroon hair danced in the breeze.
He tightly gripped his cup and pushed a deep breath of air into his lungs. He had hoped that what had happened today would all blow over, and things would be back to normal (at least, by tomorrow). After all, even though the two of them were very close, they also had very different interests in mind – Lan was more passionate about NetBattling as well as sports like soccer and inline skating; Mayl’s talents were in piano playing. But the more he thought about it, the more it seemed impossible to do so.
Mayl might have a petite frame, and she may not have as much experience with NetBattling, but Lan knew better – far better, he silently added to himself – than to underestimate her. As a young woman with a talent for piano playing and who wasn’t afraid to put others in their place, she possessed the strength of a tigress and the smarts of a fox. Lan had been best friends with her since they were little, yet her display of raw power was still something that he found bewildering (and terrifying, he might also add, due to his own experience of being the target of her short temper more than once).
But the display of affection she showed today, moments after MegaMan deleted ColourMan and stopped the bomb program within the bus…well, that was entirely new. So new, that it practically and completely caught him off-guard.
Lan wasn’t stupid – he knew his own parents could get lovey-dovey whenever they were together, which always embarrassed their child. He even knew what love was. But at the same time, he was also fairly dense. He didn’t understand why Mayl suddenly approached him like that, and then proceeded to hug him.
He closed his eyes, and found himself recalling that very moment. The way she threw her arms around his neck before nuzzling his face, like a little bunny rabbit. The way her eyes sparkled with a bashful gratitude while bright pink formed on her cheeks. The way the sunlight shone at the right angle on her short maroon hair, causing it to gleam like garnets while he caught the sweet scent of strawberries. The way her petite frame—
Lan quickly snapped out of his thoughts and shook his head to clear up that memory. But he couldn’t stop a blush from formulating in his cheeks, turning his face a bright ruby red.
Without even thinking, he put a hand up to his chest, feeling the rapid, rhythmic beating of his heart as it hammered against his ribcage. He felt his stomach twist itself into several little knots, and then undo those knots only to repeat the process.
This was…new. Odd, even. Granted, he’d always felt close to Mayl. But when did he ever get even closer to her? Did he really have feelings for her? Did he care for her that much, as Ms. Madd had suspected? Or was it all just some big bluff his brain came up with, as if screaming at him to just fess up ASAP?
“Lan? Is there something wrong, dear?”
Lan let out a yelp as his mother’s voice jolted him back into reality. He stared up at Haruka’s dark brown eyes, noticing the hint of concern they held.
“U-uh…” the boy stammered, eyes darting left and right. “I-I’m fine, Mom. Really, nothing’s wrong with me!” He chuckled nervously as he pulled on the collar of his vest.
Haruka didn’t quite buy that completely. Her brow furrowed as she pressed Lan further. “Are you sure?” she asked him. “Your cheeks are all red. Have you gotten a fever?”
“N-no, no!” Lan waved his hands in front of him. “I’m not sick! I just…uh…feel a little hot. Must’ve been the aftermath of the stove fire, s’all, hahaha!” He probably shouldn’t have brought up the stove incident instigated by the WWW, but he couldn’t figure out another way to disguise how utterly flushed his face was.
Haruka sighed as she got up from her seat before going around the kitchen table to her son’s side. She then gently pressed a palm to his forehead, trying to determine the cause behind his sudden change in attitude. This elicited a squeak of protest from Lan, but she paid no mind to that.
“Hmm,” the woman murmured. “Well, your temperature seems to be normal. But your face is still looking flushed. Did something happen?”
Well, guess the cat was out of the bag. Lan sighed.
“I…went shopping with Mayl today,” he admitted hesitantly. “She wanted to buy a birthday present for Yai. Then, a WWW member caused a traffic incident, and a bomb program was planted in the bus’s network.”
Haruka put her free hand to her mouth, eyes wide with surprise. “Another WWW attack? And did you say there was a bomb program in the bus?” she gasped. “Lan, you and Mayl weren’t hurt, were you?”
Lan ducked away from his mother’s hand. “N-no, of course not!” he replied. “MegaMan and I were able to stop the bus from exploding. And we deleted the Navi behind the incident, saving Mayl and Roll in the process.” He waved his arms around, mimicking the battle with Ms. Madd and ColourMan.
Haruka remained speechless as Lan told his story, and a little while after he had finished. Then, she let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. “Lan, that was dangerous,” she scolded him. “What if you or MegaMan got seriously hurt? O-or worse…?”
Her voice trailed off at the end as she looked down at the floor, and folded her hands over her heart. Even though she knew Lan was old enough to take care of himself and had MegaMan by his side, she couldn’t help but worry for his safety and well-being. It had been that way, ever since she and her husband had lost Hub – their other son, and Lan’s older twin brother – to HBD, many years ago.
But Lan wasn’t a small child anymore. He was growing up to be a fine young man, strong and healthy. And every time Haruka looked at him, she could almost see his father’s face beaming back at her.
“Mom?”
Haruka was pulled out of her thoughts by Lan’s voice, bringing her attention back to him. He had a confused look on his face, and was leaning forward on his seat.
“Is everything alright?” he asked his mother.
Haruka took a deep breath and nodded. “Yes,” she replied. “You know how much I worry about you, Lan. But I’m glad the two of you came out of that safe and sound.” She smiled as a new thought crossed her mind. “I’m sure Mayl is grateful to have a friend like you watch out for her.”
She seemed to have hit the jackpot as she watched her son turn his head away, his cheeks turning red. “Y-yeah,” he muttered bashfully, rubbing the back of his head with one hand. “She was grateful, but…it just made me feel…weird inside.”
Now his mother was intrigued. “Weird how?” she asked.
“U-um…” Lan stammered, unable to find his words. He took a deep breath to calm his beating heart before speaking up again. “Like a flock of butterflies decided to take up residence in my stomach. And my heart feels like a ticking time bomb.” Panic soon settled in as the young boy looked up at his mother. “Does this mean I’m actually sick? I can’t be sick; I’ve got homework to finish for tomorrow!”
Haruka giggled before lightly poking Lan in the ribs, causing him to let out another squeak. “Those butterflies aren’t the ones that make you sick, sweetie,” she told him. “They’re the friendly ones that want to mate with hers one day.”
He gave her a look that bordered between confused and incredulous, but this only made her giggle again. He was so young, so innocent. And yet, she knew he was growing at an alarming rate. It would only be a matter of time before he would fly the coop and be on his own.
The awkward silence was finally broken when Lan slid out of his seat. “I’m going to go do my homework,” he announced. “Thanks for dinner, Mom.”
“You’re welcome, dear,” Haruka called back. Lan, however, didn’t really pay much mind to her words as he trudged up the stairs to his room. His heart was still beating so fast that he thought it might burst, and his cheeks were still flushed red.
He still didn’t understand why he felt that way…but someday, he would.
* * *
Compared to the events that happened today, the evening was relatively quiet and peaceful, all things considered. Not that MegaMan.EXE minded, especially considering he needed some much-needed time to rest and recharge.
He remembered how the events played out, shortly after Ms. Madd and ColourMan were defeated and Mayl and Roll were saved. Mayl had stepped out of the bus, looking slightly distressed over almost being blown to smithereens by the bomb program. As if on instinct, Lan had rushed to her side, worried about her well-being.
The moment he did, however, Mayl had suddenly thrown herself at Lan, wrapping her arms around his neck before pulling him into a bear hug. Lan had been completely caught off-guard by this, and even MegaMan was surprised. Still, the blue Navi couldn’t help but admire the moment of intimacy between the two, and even conversed with Roll about the bright red blush that formed on Lan’s face (denseness notwithstanding).
After that, Mayl never let go of Lan’s hand as the two of them made their way around the city, much to Lan’s dismay. MegaMan couldn’t help but tease his operator the whole way through, and even Roll joined in on the fun with her own quips. It was only once the sun had begun to set and they returned to ACDC Town did the two finally part ways and headed to their respective homes. Since MegaMan had sustained some damage during the battle with ColourMan, Lan took it upon himself to do a few repairs before hooking him up to the charger so he could rest up.
So, that was where MegaMan had been for the past hour: sitting cross-legged in the PET, helmet off to reveal wavy brown hair with bangs that parted from the center. His fingers lightly tapped themselves against his helmet as he hummed a small tune to himself, eyes closed and lips curved upward into a small smile.
The creak of the bedroom door being opened alerted him that Lan was here. He put his helmet on and stood up to greet his NetOp just as the boy entered the room…only to receive a rather stunning sight. Lan’s face was completely flushed red, and he bore an expression that bordered between confused and flustered. There was also something else that concerned the blue Navi the most, but he would have to wait until the time was right to ask about it.
MegaMan watched as Lan crossed the room before collapsing on his bed. He then proceeded to grab a pillow and shove it in his face before rolling over onto his back. He waited patiently for one minute…two…three…before finally clearing his throat.
“I take it this is about what happened today?” MegaMan asked Lan.
The only response he got was a muffled “yes.”
MegaMan couldn’t help but giggle. “You know, I could tell that you really care for her,” he said. “Well, other than Ms. Madd taunting you about it.” He grimaced a little at that last statement, remembering how he had to read through all the messages that woman sent to Lan during the traffic crisis. However, the grimace quickly melted away to a more positive smile.
“Yeah, well, she didn’t have to be so up close and personal about it,” Lan replied, voice still muffled by the pillow.
A momentary silence filled the room. Then, MegaMan finally spoke up again. “You know, Lan, Mayl is really lucky to have someone like you watch out for her,” he said, smiling teasingly. “Just as I’m lucky to have an operator like you.”
“It’s not the same,” Lan grumbled.
“Maybe the butterflies in your stomach want to be friends with the butterflies in hers~”
“Shut. Up.”
MegaMan let out a sigh and shook his head. “Lan, you can deny it all you like, but you are going to have to fess up someday. Did Mom give you the talk yet?”
“WHAT talk?!” Lan screeched, suddenly sitting upright as he ripped the pillow from his face. The red blush from before was far more prevalent now, reaching to the tips of his ears.
MegaMan winced at the way his operator’s voice cracked, but it didn’t deter him from explaining what he meant. “You know…the talk? About the birds and the bees?”
Lan could only gawk the moment “the birds and the bees” left MegaMan’s mouth. He buried his face back in the pillow, this time much harder than before. He then flopped over on his bed once more and let out a muffled scream.
Another awkward silence filled the room as MegaMan waited patiently for any further movement. At first, he didn’t detect anything, leading the Navi to assume that Lan had fainted from shock. However, a small shuffle soon proved him wrong as Lan slowly got up and removed the pillow from his face. His usually messy hair was even more of a wreck, especially now that his bandana was flopped over to one side. His face was still pretty red, but even that did little to mitigate the incredulous look he now bore.
MegaMan chuckled a little as he tapped a few buttons on the PET, bringing up some files in the process. With a flick of his wrist, he leafed through the files until he found one that he deemed would be the most interesting in this kind of situation. “I’ve got a story I’d like to tell you,” he said. “Would you like me to read it?”
Lan blinked with surprise. “MegaMan, I’m not a little kid anymore,” he said with an exasperated sigh. But deep down, he was curious as to what kind of story MegaMan had in mind for him. Readjusting his bandana, he hopped off the bed and went over to the chair right in front of his computer. He then sat down and turned his attention to MegaMan.
“Alright,” he told the blue Navi. “Surprise me.”
MegaMan rolled his eyes skyward, but there was a smile on his face as he opened the document. “This one’s about a butterfly and a moth who lived in a sunny forest,” he began. “They were so different from each other, but they were also very close. There were other insects in the forest, but they had different opinions towards the butterfly and the moth. They loved and admired the butterfly for the way her wings shimmered in the sunlight, and she was loved by all for being beautiful. The moth was also awestruck by the butterfly’s beauty, and tried to follow her flight patterns, to capture the same beauty she held. But every time he tried, the other insects shunned him, and called him ugly.”
Lan frowned. “Suddenly, I don’t like this story at all,” he muttered.
“Hey, are you telling this story, or am I?” MegaMan scolded his NetOp, forcing him to clam up. “The butterfly was aware that the other insects were making fun of the moth, and tried to get them to stop. But no matter how hard she tried, the damage was already done. Out of shame, the moth hid himself away in complete darkness, where he stayed.
“One night, the moth became restless, unable to shake the feeling of being treated like an outcast by the other insects. He decided to try and leave the forest in order to start a new life. But as he spread his wings and took off, he came across a firefly. When the firefly asked the moth why he was sad, the moth simply replied that he wanted to be like his friend the butterfly, but was ridiculed because he was ugly in the sunlight. But the firefly knew better, and told the moth something extraordinary.”
Lan blinked with surprise. “What’s that?” he asked.
“The firefly told the moth that the reason the butterfly looked beautiful in the sunlight was because she was an insect of the sun, and that was why the other insects were so captivated by her beauty. The moth, on the other hand, had an inner beauty of his own – for the moth is an insect of the moon.”
Lan leaned back on his chair and stared out the window overlooking his backyard. “An insect of the sun, and an insect of the moon,” he repeated, his voice unusually soft.
“Deciding to trust the firefly’s words, the moth spread his wings and began to fly in the night sky,” MegaMan went on. “And as he flew, the moon shone her silver light upon the moth’s wings, and he shone in a way that was similar to the butterfly…but much more. Before long, the other insects were dazzled by the moth’s beauty, and they realized just how wrong they were about him. Even the butterfly was just as captivated, and she soon came to love the moth more than she did.”
MegaMan took a deep breath before continuing on. “You see, Lan, this moth lived most of his life feeling like an outcast because he looked ugly. And he didn’t realize how special he was until that fateful night.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell him sooner, though?” Lan asked. “If he had known, he wouldn’t have had to hide until nightfall and be sad about it.”
MegaMan put a hand to his chin in thought. “You’re right,” he replied. “Perhaps if the butterfly was more assertive and showed the moth more love, then maybe he wouldn’t have had to feel so lonely. But that’s beside the point. The point is that you, Lan, are the moth, and Mayl is the butterfly.”
Lan’s eye twitched. “I’m sorry, what?”
“Other people may look at you and turn you away because of something they don’t like about you,” MegaMan explained. “Like your personality, for instance. Or the way you leap into danger without thinking about the consequences beforehand.”
“Hey!” Lan protested, despite knowing in his heart that his Navi had a point.
MegaMan stepped towards the screen and pressed it with one hand. “But at the same time, there’s also something special that you hold within you,” he said, smiling softly. “Something that no one else can see, except for the ones you hold dearest to you. And I think that special something is what Mayl saw in you today. And what I see in you. No matter what happens, know that you are special in your own way…and never, ever, let that feeling go!”
Lan sat in silence for a moment. Then, he took a deep breath and returned the gesture, gently pressing the tip of his finger against the PET screen to meet MegaMan’s palm.
“Y-you know, you do have a point,” he said rather sheepishly. “Thanks, MegaMan.”
“You’re welcome.”
Lan chuckled as he picked up his PET and smiled at MegaMan. “If I’m the moth and Mayl’s the butterfly, then I guess that makes you my firefly,” he said with a cheeky grin.
“Pff!” MegaMan let out a burst of laughter, and Lan couldn’t help but smile. The NetOp being the moth and his Navi being a firefly was an amusing thought.
Lan stretched his arms, feeling his joints pop into place. “Well, anyway, I should probably get some homework done,” he said. He shuddered. “I definitely don’t want Ms. Mari to chew my butt out again.”
MegaMan nodded. “Yeah, good idea,” he agreed. “Good thing it’s just a simple English essay, nothing too hard.”
Lan smiled as he pulled himself closer to his computer and began to work on his assignment, positioning the PET in a way that made it rest against his chest. As he took the time to carefully read the document and answer the questions, MegaMan sat down, crossed his legs, and relaxed.
Deep within his NetOp’s ribcage, MegaMan could hear Lan’s heartbeat. It was a steady rhythm, strong and true, like the beating of a bird’s wings. Just the feeling of life filling his ears was more than enough to reminisce an old memory of when he himself was still alive.
When he held Lan in his arms, in a time when they were both still together.
When he was the late Hub Hikari.
He wished he could be with Lan in person again. He wished he could hold his younger twin brother in his arms, wipe away his tears when he cried, and assure him that they would always be together forever.
But for now, he would have to wait until the right time. For now, just hearing Lan’s heart was enough to remind MegaMan that Lan was here with him, and that they were together. Even if they were separated by a small machine, even if one was organic and the other was a mix of human DNA and Navi data…they still had each other, one way or another.
