the time that glenn howerton was in a gay period-piece play about crossdressing

so awhile back i was poking around glenn howerton's wikipedia looking for movies and such that i might have missed, and i noticed it had a small theatrical section listed. this was never something i'd given much thought in the past, but on this particular occasion i was so hard-up for new Glontent that i decided to see what i could find about the three plays listed there, because i'd never seen anyone else have much luck with that and i love a good internet scavenger hunt. walk with me.

compleat female stage beauty caught my eye right away-- the title of the play itself is interesting, and i happened to know already that the most famous real-life duke of buckingham was the lover of king james. so of course i went delving...

and what should i find but the entire playscript for compleat female stage beauty, For Free, on archive dot org? anyone on earth can rent it and read it for an hour at a time, or for 14 days if you want to really take your time with it. i have to assume that this is NOT common knowledge among sunny fans (or anyone else), as the archive upload only has 99 views at the time of making this post.

to give a VERY succinct summary of what the play is about-- in the 1660s, during the english restoration, women were allowed to act professionally onstage for the first time in english history. this caused problems for the male actors who had previously made their careers playing female characters, such as edward kynaston, around whom the play centers. outside of his acting career, kynaston is a gay man, and he's in a romantic entanglement with george villiars, the duke of buckingham (NOT the same duke of buckingham who was fucking king james-- that was this villiars' dad. we love gay fathers and their gay sons!) kynaston struggles to find his place in a changing social landscape where it seems as though his talents are no longer needed or wanted.

before getting into the script proper, the book has some information about notable early productions of the play. this is great because it pins down a lot of details about glenn's involvement in the show that wikipedia left unanswered, but there's also an unexpected sunny crossover here-- in an even EARLIER production, the lead role was played by david hornsby!

(i also learned over the course of my deep dive on this that glenn's costar, lead actor brandon demery, was a fellow member of glenn's graduating juilliard group!)

things don't end well for kynaston and villiars, but still, the onstage relationship between the two is both electrifying and heartbreaking as it changes over the course of the show.

now, this WOULD be where i would include cast pictures or footage or any kind of photos of glenn in this show... but if any such material exists, it's not publicly available. i went so far as to email the publicity and outreach coordinator for the theater that hosted glenn's production of this show to ask if they had any archived materials, but she told me that they didn't.

but this production took place in october of 2000, meaning it was pre-that 80s show, meaning we can all sit and think about how a glenn that looked like This was acting in a gay period piece about crossdressing and gender roles and the mystery of human sexuality. dudes rock.

a bit of a disappointing note to end on, i know, but i really wanted to talk about this play and share it with people!! it's a super interesting and overlooked part of glenn's early career, but also i think the script is fascinating and very well-written in its own right. i definitely encourage yall to check it out on the internet archive if you're interested-- again, it's literally free!

You merely grinned in response, thrilled to finally have something to temporarily distract you from the scorching heat that felt like flames licking against your skin; mere seconds away from burning you alive.

Sensing that this was most definitely going to lead into a rather violent exchange, you wrapped your hands around your lover's bicep before tugging him away, a nervous smile growing on your face.

Luckily, he was in a good enough mood to allow you to tug him away without much protest - only a few cusses grumbled under his breath but that was probably the most tame you could get him.

As soon as you got a good amount of distance between the both of you and the ice cream man, you let go of your man in favour of opening up the frozen delight in your hands and shoving it straight into your mouth.

Immediately, an explosion of frost sprayed against the warm cavern - sending a cool feeling down your spine and helping to temporarily rid you of the warmth that overrode your system.

The cool sensation caused you to feel a large amount of relief and you let out a sigh with your eyes closed.

Now this was the perfect way to spend a hot summer day.

Seraph of The End and its plot

Let me clarify this: Seraph of The End is a masterpiece, a work of literary art. Despite this, it has a lot of problems with its plot.

Let me state the extremely obvious; Seraph of The End is on an acid trip at this point of the plot. There's a lot of plot twists, and definitely some plot inconsistencies. This is probably because Kagami is changing up stuff so that it matches with his ideal outcome/ending for it, of course. Not to say it's near, since it's still a total clusterfuck and a lot of things have to be clarified before the manga can progress (not to mention it is MONTHLY, so we get 12 chapters per year to work with).

I personally, don't understand how YUU is MIKAELA. This is physically impossible, because, we know that Yuu is the eyeball. Not the fucking human???? unless Yuu is being stupid again and misreading his memories. Like, Michaela named the eyeball, the first Yuu, you know... Yuu. That just doesn't make sense. The eyeball basically gave life to a bunch of humans, so it would more be Yuu's child than a vessel of Yuu. Michaela and Yuu do not appear to be similar at all. You can tell because of the way his personality starts out. A fearful child, and a generic tsundere teenager. He just grows more innocent and foolishly blinded by his affection for life as time progresses. Michaela isn't exactly innocent in the child-like sense, he's more curious. Curious as to why life is... well, life. Honestly, I just don't get it at all. I just have no other way to explain it.

And then, where would Mikaela get his personality from? We know he's a successful clone of Michaela, but we don't know much about him [MIKAELA] as a person. We know a lot about Yuu, he's the first main lead; who the story is about. However, the story is centric around Mika too. So, it's inconsistent and just all the more confusing.

Shinoa Squad, GureMahi, and KrulFeri. (Not using their names as shipping, but more of an abbrev. for their names since theyre seen together) What about them? We have no idea what's going on with them. Since, our original leads in the previous plot arc was centric around them too. Shinoa Squad has been there from the start, so what'll be made of that? Seriously, seems like Kagami just cut them out and forgot them.

The plot is literally inconsistent as shit. Everything went downhill from the conversion of Mika to cursed gear and forth. After that it just got so much more confusing than it actually should be. And yet again, the story falls victim to the plot inconsistencies! Wow. Surprising. The story still remains interesting, but it's still extremely, extremely confusing. This may also ward off newer readers, because it's just not easy to wrap your head around unless you like overanalyzing stuff.

Alright, now there's two possible ship endings that I can think of right now when it comes to our main leads.

A.) MikaYuu. They've been together from the start, they are the epitome of "It was always you", sacrificed everything to be with each other, show parallels to a ship considered "semi-canon" according to the ship wiki (this being GureMahi, as it has the most material to have parallels be made to)., and of course is a fan favorite. This can work, if Kagami decides to please his readers with something that you wouldn't see in a shounen: queers. I can see the world ending again, with Mika and Yuu sitting together, smiling at the destruction. [Although, I picture Mika slightly less happy.] Yuu and Mika watch as their greed has caused all of this, but they just don't seem to care all that much. After all, they're together.

B.) YuuNoa. They're the main leads. Main female, main male. They display parallels to GureMahi as well (but I find they have less), Shinoa's canon crush on Yuuichirou (that I will write a masterpost analyzing later), it's a shounen there has to be some straights somewhere, maybe Shinoa's love will have some good outcome for her. For YuuNoa, I picture that Yuu decides to revive the world (with Mika being by his side, can't kill off the main guy completely), with Shinoa finally having the strength to profess her love. Yuuichirou being like "WOW!! You like me!? AWESOME!!!!" and boom, they hold hands or something.

I'm mentioning these potential endings because shounen has some kind of outcome for their main characters. (ex: naruto's marriage, goku and chichi, ichigo and orihime, etc.) Of course, it's up to Kagami with what he wants to do with the romantic tensions. As for my stance on ships? Whatever seems the most canon at that moment is what I will support. Of course, as long as it isn't fucking disgusting. At this moment, it looks like MikaYuu is going to be canon. This may change, but I'm all for some queers.

SO, to conclude: Owari no Seraph is kind of a clusterfuck, and that's not a good thing. If it's gonna be saved, Kagami has a lot of explaining to do. Potential endings with ships can happen, depending on what Kagami wants to do with the story.

Koi to Dangan - By Mino Nozomi (8/10)

I think this one has a pretty big cult following. There's a live action Japanese drama series based on it! The cover art for this looks nice, and the leading man is attractive, but beware. Our female lead suffers from my-eyes-are-so-huge-they-look-alien syndrome. No one else has the huge shoujo eyes, so she kinda stands out in a bad way.

Welcome to the world of Koi to Dangan! It's an unrealistic fantasy land where Yakuza gangsters deeply respect women. Oya, a thirty five year old gang leader, never lets women get involved in his battles. He safely escorts the poor things away from gunfights that he causes. He's a hero. He's a level ten woman respecter. Yes there's some old timey sexism in this. Yes there's a huge age gap in this. Yes, half the chapters are sex scenes. Hear me out. Oya is a yandere. He admits it. He literally says he's "dominant and possessive".

Oya has been in relationships before. Duh. He's thirty five, but he quickly falls in love with a twenty year old college student. He seduces her with great sex, money, and his soft side. Before you keep reading beware. Some of the lines in this are painfully awkward. It's not unreadable though, because the drama is dramatic.

Shit happens in this.

Nobody stands around doing nothing.

This is Yuri. She's a college student. She played lots of sports in high school and she's pretty strong, even though she's skinny. Everybody says she looks like a model. She doesn't date. She wants her man to love her for who she is. She doesn't want to be treated like a trophy.

So later she becomes a housewife of course.

Oya is actually pretty good boyfriend material. He develops feelings for Yuri after she beats up a group of perverts with a chair. He saves her. His manliness attracts her, and they become a couple after she watches him get shot. When she sees him bleed she knows she cares for him. She can't resist him, even though she knows he's dangerous.

Oya isn't just a killer. He's smart. When Yuri gets kidnapped by this awful rapey Russian guy he plans ahead. He uses Russian guy's narcissism to defeat him. Sidenote there's alot of weird fetish stuff in this story. Yuri is in lingerie in every other chapter. I honestly think the male character designs in this are nice. The older women also look nice. Yuri, specifically, looks like a toothpick alien. The way she's designed kinda ruins the scenes she's in. Anyway every man she meets is horny for her, and Oya has to fight them off.

There's a honeymoon arc. We find out that both sides of this couple are pretty damn toxic. They don't need anyone else. They only need each other. Yuri lies to everyone in her life. She says she's not dating anyone, but she moves in with Oya. Her parents don't even know she's dating him. Oyas family also tries to break them up, but it doesn't work.

There are three entire chapters dedicated to an extreme biting fetish/sex stuff. Oya says he wants to see Yuri covered in his marks. She wants the same thing. They spend like an entire day biting each other. It's disgusting, but hey it made me pay attention and erotic mangas are boring 99% of the time.

After the honeymoon there's an Evil Sexy Older Woman arc. Choko has been madly in love with Oya for five years. She decides to use Yuri to get close to him. Unfortunately she's crazy so she goes too far. She wants to hurt Yuri. She comes up with a complicated plan to get Oya's attention, and she buys some rapists to use on Yuri. It's pretty fucked up. The rape almost actually happens, but Yuri isn't completely brain dead. She noticed that Choko is weird, so she calls Oya for help. When Choko lures her out ten bodyguards are waiting in the shadows.

Choko is defeated and out of the way in three chapters.

This is Jin. He's a young hot police officer. He's Yuri's childhood friend, and he's madly in love with her. He's not a moron, so he knows Yuri is dating a criminal. He says he'll marry her and take care of her instead. By the way Yuri has like no dreams and she's shit at everything besides sports and being pretty. She was like...created to be a pretty stay at home wife. That gets super grating.

Jin steals Yuri.

This happens.

SonallyNShadamy4Ever, later known as Sonally4LifeReborn, now going by FinalBossSonally has returned and is harassing me and others once again.

I don't even have words right now. My stomach honestly feels sick from dread. Once I start feeling better, this parasite shows up and ruins my day. The comment he left on my Alice Tsukagami x Brad Hawk moodboard made me emotionally relapse. This guy is taunting me about my bisexual identity and that I ship Roupaz. I've reported this guy many times, and he keeps coming back and harassing me and others. But let's get this over with.

So basically, asexual reproduction produces clones, while incest involves sexual reproduction with close relatives. The two processes serve different purposes and have distinct genetic outcomes.

Yes, it is confirmed that Knuckles and Julie Su are distant relatives.

When distant relatives, such as cousins, enter into a romantic relationship, it does not necessarily constitute incest. While forming a relationship with distant relatives is not inherently incestuous, it’s essential to consider both the genetic risks and the legal and cultural context.

There is a difference between being a distant relative and a direct relative. Direct relatives are closely related and share a higher percentage of genetic material; distant relatives have more distant connections within the family tree.

Knuckles and Julie Su are extremely distant cousins—their shared ancestor was several generations ago; they didn’t meet until they were older; and they didn’t learn about their relation until even later.

I don't ship Knuckles and Julie Su because I'm an "incest lover." I liked their relationship because of their interactions with each other and because I thought they made a cute couple. I liked them way before it was revealed that they were distant relatives. That came out way later. I can't control that. I honestly wish that they could've left that part out of the canon entirely. But what can I honestly do about it? It's canon; thanks, Ken Penders.

FinalBossSonally didn't “innocently inquire” about my Sonic the Hedgehog ship memes; he interrogated me about them, demanding to know why I ship them, forcing his own ships on me, and insisting that he was “simply correcting my shipping tastes.”

This guy literally told me—a bisexual woman, that he was “disgusted” by the fact that Roupaz almost became canon, by the fact that they’re an interspecies relationship, and by the fact that Rouge is bisexual. But Sonelise is A-OK because it’s “straight.”

He claims that he's not homophobic/biphobic, but I have cold, hard proof that he is.

Here he is insulting Kanohi-Zeo for having LGBT headcanons for STH characters and openly admitting that he HATES LGBTQ+. He also ropes in that being a "lesbian" is on the same level as being a pedophile, or something that is illegal. And then he continues to complain as to why they didn't make Knuckles a "female-leaning bisexual," so at least he could be attracted to females because Knuckles' species needs straight male echidnas to repopulate. And then he finishes by calling Kanohi-Zeo disgusting for having these headcanons. If that's not homophobic, then I don't know what is. Aside from it being offensively uneducated stupidity, of course.

So, I didn't respond to his toxic, childish comment, and I blocked him, again.

And as for FinalBossSonally being "my master," FinalBossSonally, you are not the master of anyone; you are a stalking, batshit, psycho, toxic, homophobic, parasite with some serious mental issues. Go touch grass and get some help. I'll be here, having fun in my bisexual hell with my friends~

off jumpol: I mean I'll try to stay brief bc everyone knows how much I adore off, but for me he's truly the one actor who has it all: he can act great, he's beautiful, has literally the best personality out of any actor, has a great fashion sense, can sing well, is hilarious af, an amazing leader & mc, a great friend & phi to literally everyone around him... like HOW can you not love him? I've been his fan for 3 years now and literally fall in love with him more every day <3

mond tanutchai: speaking of love, here's another actor I'm literally in love with <3 so mond is objectively one of the most beautiful men on this earth, and on top of that he's an amazing actor, is very charismatic, and has the cutest personality! I just hate how underrated he is bc he deserves to be a leading man in every series, and I hope he can get to that very soon bc he only deserves the best of the best :)

tay tawan: so "everybody loves tay" is a popular saying in the fandom for a reason. I usually think actors who are loved by everyone are overrated, but for tay it's 100000% warranted. even though he's not the greatest actor (he's a good actor don't get me wrong!), he has the best personality (infp's unite) and is just... happiness in a human being :) he's also an amazing presenter and extremely genuine & passionate about everything he ever talks about. he transpires honesty & I would trust him with my life <3

drake laedeke: so on top of being very incredibly handsome, I feel like drake really has one of the best personalities out there in the fact that he's not afraid of being silly or "too much." a pattern you'll find in every actor I love is their genuine-ness, and drake definitely has that! he's extremely hyper & fun and while he still has some work to put in acting-wise, he's getting better every year and I'm very excited to see where he goes <3

first kanaphan: so I always brag that I've liked first since his first role, but it's true! I've always felt like he had so much potential, especially when I saw him alongside off in wolf, or drake in blacklist. but ngl since his first role in wake up chanee that was great, I felt like he was delegated to mediocre & okay series where, even though he did shine, he didn't get to show his full potential either. then not me happened, and like everyone in that show, he fucking SLAYED and bodied yok in a way literally no one else could have, and now he's also killing it in the eclipse so I'm literally standing here like a proud mom like "FINALLY! my son gets some good material!" so yeah, I love first & his talent, as well as his silly & loving personality. he's just... pure good vibes <3

earth pirapat: so even though I'm not a super fan of where earth's career is going, very much caged into his ship, I've loved him for a very long time. he's literally the only actor I've seen every role of (even his singaporean show), and he's had my attention since his first role in water boyy, but stole my heart as un in theory of love who's part of what was my main favorite ship, untwo, for years. that love truly culminated in 1000 stars, where he finally got a main role that made him shine like he deserves to! so yeah, I will always support earth, bc he's an amazing actor, genuinely one of the most beautiful men on earth & truly such a sweetie <3 all good vibes towards him!

joss wayar: to complete the hottie trinity (with mond & earth), we of course have joss! so the dude is literally the most beautiful man on this earth & it's kinda rude... but I also really appreciate the fact that he's chosen a variety of roles including a bi poly icon like neo in 3 will be free. I also think he definitely has the potential to become THE male lead of thai series if he works a bit more on his acting, especially in emotional scenes, and while I don't really love the "hustle culture" part of his personality, I still love his response to someone asking him if he was gay back in 2019 that showed how open-minded he is. I'm very excited to see where his career goes :)

gun atthaphan: so what is there to say about gun that hasn't already been said? an obvious INSANE talent for acting, an incredible fashion sense & the cutest personality... it's no coincidence why gun is so beloved. I have nothing but great things to say about him, and while his personality is very private so I wish I knew more about him, I will always support him in every endeavor & wish him the best <3

fluke gawin: a recent addition to my faves’ list, gawin has always been on my radar since his first role as mork in dark blue kiss. while he hasn't had that many roles, he's stolen the show in pretty much all of them! mork was already my favorite part of dbk, I rooted for his character in girl next room over the male lead and he was adorable in enchanté... but of course it's his role in not me that truly sealed the deal for me, managing a super complex character with many emotional scenes & truly showing me that besides a beautiful man who can sing insanely well, there truly is an amazing actor. I'm extremely excited to see where fluke goes next, even though y'all know I'm not a fan of him starring in be my favorite, bc I truly know he has many great things ahead of him. very, very excited for what's to come <3

non chanon: so it's funny bc non has been on my radar for a while, through his roles in bad genius the movie & project s: shoot! I love you, but I always found his roles incredibly bland & boring. then, this past year happened: he gave a twist to the boring male lead trope in 46 days, played one of the most interesting complex roles ever in one of my all-time favorite thai dramas the revenge, and once again a layered messed up rapper in wannabe... and now he's gonna be in the first historical thai bl too! so to say my opinion of him has changed would be an understatement bc he's not only a really, really, REALLY solid actor & absolutely gorgeous, but he also seems like a lovely person who loves pushing himself into new interesting roles. I'm very excited to see his future roles, especially as he seems to want to work with gmmtv more, and I'm really glad to have changed my mind about him <3

Watching the catwoman scene in batman returns not only feels cathartic but also makes me think about how my self insert plays in all of it.

When we see first see Selina's apartment you start to notice something: the walls are pink. Stuffed animals and dolls stacked neatly on shelves and the couch. A pink neon sign greets you with "Hello There!". It almost looks like a little girls room, reflecting Selina's still innocent state of mind. Then during her rampage she sprays everything with black paint, cuts up a leather jacket. She shoves a dollhouse aside as she gets to work. Her newfound aggression empowers her at first but she end suo developing a sort of vindictive misplaced anger towards women she deems as preppy (Vicki) or weak (the victim she saved from r4pe).

My self insert starts the series wearing darker colors, like olives and gray, as if to blend into the background. To make herself look professional. Because that's what real adults do, right? Like selina she doesn't make a lot of bold statements. In fact she was kind of a cynic when it came to Gotham. Throughout the movie as my sona settles into her role as the replacement Ice Princess, she starts wearing brighter colors, from pale blues to the pastel pink that once coated the walls of selina's fortress.

Even when my sona remains uncomfortable playing this role she sucks it up anyways because she feels obligated to bring some joy to Gotham. At the gala she wears a beautiful ball gown, handpicked by Max Shreck himself, which end up getting torn during the climatic battle. And after the movie while she goes back to her normal style, she starts incorporating bright colors as a sign of regaining hope and enjoyment for life. That she doesn't have to give up everything to be considered an adult.

The destruction of clothes also plays a role in reclaiming personal agency. Catwoman cuts up a jacket to make her suit (somehow having enough material to cover her entire body) and my sona rips the bottom of her gown so she can run. Giving themselves the ability to move freely literally detaching themselves from the roles they've been shoved into by men.

Despite selina's previous statement on weak woman expecting on a hero to save them I end up helping the hero. My sona willingly gives herself up to penguin, my sona leads the kids out of the sewers. I even scream at Catwoman that I didn't ask to be ice princess and don't care about strength or weakness. I just wanted to save those kids. I witness Catwoman electrocuting Max but lie to the police because I felt she had suffered enough and having the cops on her back would've made things worse. It's woman giving another woman a chance to be free. And this surprises Selina because she never expected a stereotypical snooty princess being so active. That even dollied up jewels and chiffon didn't free me from oppressive standards that destroyed her.

Ironically despite walking on opposite sides of the runway the way selina and my sona are treated aren't all that different. Shreck props up my sona as a symbol of innocence yet he murdered an innocent woman. Penguin lusts after my sona but tried to kill Catwoman for spurning his advances. Yet I am spared because I willingly go with him which I take the opportunity to look for the missing children. Bruce believes he can fix selina but he just cant, she doesn't want to be saved. He had to let her go. Yet it's his determination & strong sense of justice and hope that encourages me to try to face my own battles. Bruce's final lines emphasizes how he is only major male character to see us as real people.

It didn't matter what we wore or thought or behaved, we were unfairly put into boxes that reduced us to shallow props. In the grand scheme of things our rivalry didn't matter. It didn't solve the bigger issues.

In short the Madonna-Whore complex sucks.

Hawai'i Headcanons

Hawai’i's State Spirit is red Hawaiian hibiscus flowers that grow in her hair. While they are yellow in nature, the official color for the island of Hawai’i is red.

Each island has its own official color.

Hawai’i, along with her people over the centuries, consider her to be māhū. Māhū is the Hawaiian term for the third gender, or the “in-between,” which characterizes someone that embodies both the male and female spirit.

Although māhū people were historically assigned male at birth, Hawai’i’s status as a personification encompases every single person that identifies with her. This would mean that she literally embodies both the Hawaiian male and female spirit, which is something the people couldn’t deny.

Māhū had the role of teachers and keepers of Hawaiian cultural traditions who passed it down to the next generation. Hawai’i was and still is an especially important figure in that regard due to her immortality and first hand experiences with the establishment and development of these traditions.

When the missionaries had come to Hawai’i, began stigmatizing her culture, and starting asserting their own, this only emboldened her to preserve her traditions to ensure they wouldn’t be forgotten.

She has quite a few trust issues from all the circumstances that lead to her annexation into the United States. Hawai’i dislikes the government personifications, especially IDC since she was the most involved with her.

IDC essentially pretended to be her friend in hopes that Hawai’i would make the prospect of annexation more desirable to her kingdom’s leaders.

Hawai’i herself really did believe that IDC was her friend and ally before realizing too late that the fed was just using her.

Hawai’i doesn’t hold much resentment towards the states as they didn’t have involvement with her. She just really doesn’t like the feds.

Her friendship with Alaska took a long time to form as she was still afraid that he would have some ulterior motives with their relationship. As such, Hawai’i had built a wall (or an ocean-sized moat in this case) with every interaction they had. However, with time and the gained knowledge that Alaska really just wanted to be left alone most of the time just like her and knowing that he really was genuine with his feelings, she opened up to him.

The best at surfing out of all the other states, seeing as surfing was advanced the most and persisted the longest in Hawai’i.

An alaia board hangs up in her home, specially made for her as a gift from a member of the royal class. It’s ten feet long, and she takes it out for special occasions.

Alaia and olo surfboards are the first two types of boards made, and alaia boards were for the common people while olo boards were reserved for royalty. Olo boards are very long, typically fourteen to twenty five feet long.

Hawai’i tends to use a shortboard any other time, but she’ll break out her gun board for the large and strong waves. All the boards in her quiver are made with solid wood, the material that she is most accustomed to.

She enjoys a cup of Kona coffee about once a month, the type grown in her state. As Kona coffee is considered more premium, and thus more expensive, she doesn’t drink it every day.

When Alaska and Hawai’i visit each other, she always gives him a bag of Kona-grown coffee, seeing as it’s generally cheaper locally. Knowing Hawai’i’s relationship with the government, Alaska makes sure to hide it from Gov.

Hawai’i has mailed a coconut to the Statehouse before just to see how Florida would use it to torment Gov. You can mail a coconut from Hawai’i without packaging or anything, and you can also write messages and decorate it before sending it off too.

She has a mutual positive relationship with Nevada. Seeing as Hawai'i is one of two states that completely banned gambling, many Hawaiians travel to Las Vegas for vacation, including her. Unlike with her friendship with Alaska, she and Nevada don’t really talk outside of visits to Vegas.

Las Vegas is sometimes referred to as Hawai’i’s ninth island due to how many Hawaiians visit or even move there.

Nevada first noticed Hawai’i herself visiting Vegas because he noticed her watching one of his drag shows, but she didn’t even know he was the one performing.

He’ll give her pointers on what casinos to visit, what places to avoid, and fun places where she can get her money’s worth. Nevada treats this benefit as a bonus package of sorts due to their friendly relationship and her people supporting his economy.

There's is just no way that the cauldron, who in canon really likes Elain to the point of kidnapping her and literally purring whenever she's around, would make a mistake by making Elucien mates instead of El/riel.

The cauldron doesn't do "mistakes". It all comes down to what the couple does. People ignore that the cauldron doesn't match people who are attracted to each other, it matches those who are EQUALS. They ignore the fact that mating bonds are a blessing from FATE, which is literally the reason why basically every male wishes for a accepted mating bond. Lucien loved Jesminda so much, he thought they did share a mating bond. Azriel was hoping and waiting for a mating bond between him and Mor to snap, even though she gave him so many hints that she's not interested in him. Mating bonds are a big deal and suppose to be rare, there's no way that fate would be wrong in mating 2 people just because one person thought he did the math and put 3 brothers, 3 sisters together.

Rhys parents weren't a perfect match because his father decided to not treat his mom like an equal even though they are equals.

The cauldron, fate, loves Elain so I would pretty much believe that Lucien was a gift to her. Not a curse or a mistake. Elain and Lucien not going all in for the mating bond doesn't mean they're poorly matched 💀

If all Azriel did for Elain was mate material then shouldn't Moriel already share a mating bond? You know.. because he loved her for 500 years, feels overprotective over her first, is willing to die and do stuff she likes for her etc? Make it make sense.

And I think the Mor in ACOMAF looks very different from Mor in all the other books and I do think that was purposefully done by SJM. She suddenly made her more intimated by her father and Eris versus book one where she was bold and brazen. She brings into focus how Azriel's actions scare her and make her uncomfortable. She made her need for Sunshine in SF more obvious (drawing parallels between she and Elain's character). And we note that Az acts around Mor the way he's started to act around Elain considering Mor isn't around much (transference anyone?) while also refusing to address his feelings for Mor. The more that SJM creates similarities between Mor and Elain (considering we know the things that bother Elain are the way we see Az act around Mor and is starting to act with Elain), and points out how different his behavior around Gwyn is, it seems clear to me that she's leading us in the direction of Gwynriel. And telling us that these bright, sunshine loving girls who feel bothered by overprotectiveness and obvious aggressive acts are not a match for Az. As far as the Cauldron / Fate and Elain, sure mistakes can happen. But that's not really how the FMC's story is supposed to go. The FMC is supposed to get the best, the ultimate love of a lifetime. Sure, the author told us bonds can be poorly matched but why would she choose to give one of her leading ladies one of those? Why wouldn't she want her to have the ultimate kind of love that both her sisters found?

having more time to think about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Gwitch), here are some of my very loose and disorganized thoughts:

as people have pointed out, Gwitch ep 1 shares a lot of similarities with Utena, and i’m really hoping it goes hard on dissecting the systemic oppression like Utena—it’s a very capitalistic society, and Miorine’s dad is playing that system like a pro and using it to crush the people in his way... sometimes literally. (and i gotta say: even though he’s only a product of the corrupt system, someone needs to take Miorine’s father down a peg. hope he rots in hell!)

Guel Jeturk is very much an expy of Saionji in Utena, and seeing him get what he deserves is so goddamn satisfying. imo, what made Saionji compelling even taking his nightmarish behavior into account is that he’s obviously a laughing stock to the characters with power (this man eats shit constantly, and you love to see it!) He also has moments of clarity about the effects of the system he’s operating under—it’s a little tragic as he comes to the realization that participating in the duels (the patriarchy) is folly, but can’t help himself from being goaded into doing it all over again.

Now, Guel similarly is treated as a laughingstock—even his fangirls laughed when Suletta sassed him—but it remains to be seen if he gains enough self-awareness to recognize how the system he’s participating in harms him and the people around him. (that said, i don’t think a ‘redemption arc’ is necessary; it’s fine if he remains a jerkass who gets what’s coming to him, as long as he’s a complicated jerkass.)

We see two other guys and one other girl on the dueling committee, and i’m assuming they’re Miorine’s other ‘official’ suitors—though given that anyone with a MS could enter a duel with the current Engaged (and maybe even with other students), maybe there’s no concept of ‘official’ suitors, and committee members are paper-pushers who deal with dueling logistics. it’s interesting that the dueling system obviously favors pilots to inherit the company (via engagement to Miorine); Miorine’s dad is ex-military, so it makes sense that he’s biased towards having a fighter as his heir (instead of his own non-combatant child).

(this does make me wonder what it’d be like if Miorine was his son instead of his daughter—would he have sold his son to the best MS duelist the same way he’s doing to his daughter, or would he have pushed his son to become someone who could wield a MS?)

given that gay marriage and queer relationships are commonplace in the setting outside of “provincial” Mercury, I hope that there are other queer characters too—Suletta and Miorine are cute, but we should see evidence of other same-sex couples if it’s as normalized as it’s stated to be. (I also hope other queer identities are normalized in the setting as well).

as for our leads, i like them! i don’t necessarily need Miorine to become a badass elite pilot, but i wouldn’t complain if she does become one (as long as the journey is convincing). I’d prefer it if she was able to take the reins of her own destiny without becoming one though, because i think it’s more powerful to show that there are multiple ways to take down an abusive system. I really hope it’s not going to come off as “manipulative woman gets people to fight for her”—but judging from the materials released so far, I don’t think we’re in danger of that kind of framing.

on a related topic: it’s clear that Miorine’s male suitors are mostly in it to inherit the company, and there’s no indication that they—along with most of the school’s population—have any respect for Miorine as a person. it’s an interesting dynamic in that she’s technically the princess of the school, given who her father is, but is treated like dirt by most of the student population due to her father's dehumanizing treatment of her. i hope the other students start respecting her later in the show, and not just because of how strong her fiancee is.

It has been several years since I was permabanned from the JCF.

I said this:

‘The ST should have been about Ben Solo.’

Unfortunately I said it in a thread dedicated to Finn.

I was warned...one poster responded with this:

‘This is a Finn thread. It’s posters like YOU who are putting the white character in front of the Black male lead.’

From a white female. Like myself.

Unfortunately for me, I happened to forget and mention Ben again in Finn’s thread and was perma banned. I received this message from them:

‘You’re a terrible person, and George Lucas hates you!’

That was of course tongue in cheek...but am I the only person actually saddened to be accused of racism simply for mentioning a white fictional character in a forum thread dedicated to a black fictional character?

But, this is the JCF, that sadly have degenerated into a toxic environment for anyone who doesn’t loathe and detest Kylo/Ben.

There are plenty of Finn fans out there who don’t react like this. There are plenty of POC fans out there who don’t like Finn. There are POC who are huge fans of Kylo. But the JCF seem to attract Finn fans whose loathing for Kylo goes beyond mere dislike of his character. It’s all because they wanted their fave character to be leading man.

Example 1

Finn and Kylo made perfect archenemies, yet we get stuck with Rey fighting her abuser while trying to save his soul, because they are “space soul mates” turned cousins/siblings. You would think that the amount of hatred Kylo had towards Finn would be continued. Kylo the Prince of Darkness being consistently foiled by this nameless expendable slave that turns out to be force sensitive.

You’re telling me that the great supremacist Kylo Ren and the FO would go around the galaxy putting up wanted posters for some girl that rejected him and not the Stormtrooper that’s literally destroying their little club house? Kylo is an absolute narcissist and he’s going treat Finn like a non-factor when he is “The” factor? Finn who was robbed of his birthright and raised from a baby to die serving only to evade his slave owners and enemies, take what they need and return with everything necessary to defeat them? Finn and Kylo had all the potential to have one of the top 3-5 greatest rivalries in Star Wars. It really hurts both characters by not having any sort of confrontation after that.

This individual has either not read the VDs for the ST or chosen to ignore them, along with the art books that stated unequivocally that the main character was Rey, and that all along DLF wanted a female protagonist. I’m not happy with this myself, as I wanted the Skywalker Saga to be about them, but all the supplementary material was very clear Finn was a supporting character.

Example 2

Finn has far more light side qualities than Rey. LFL just loved the concept of Rey representing the light and thought the answer was to give her all the powers you could have including ones better suited for X-Men and have everyone give her all of their stuff, because apparently everyone just had to love and have faith in Rey without earning anything at all. Rey is only as powerful as the writers allowed her to be, just as Finn is not because the writers allowed it to be.

He’s actually right here with his character assessment of Rey. But, they did not ‘push’ her at Finn’s expense, at least until TROS, and then she was pushed at EVERYONE’S expense....most famously Kylo, as unlike Finn he had his screen time severely cut, and that final scene....where Rey does it all and he’s tossed down a hole to await the moment he’s needed as life force donor. And, as unlike Finn, as the last real Skywalker, he was not a supporting character, this was unfair. It wasn’t Han or Lando who destroyed the Emperor, was it?

Examples 3 and 4.

That’s why his best scenes were the ones that showed his friendship with Poe, or early on, those that appeared to show a budding romance with Rey.

Er...what budding romance was that? Rey could have kissed him on the lips at the end of TFA yet she kissed him on the forehead. And called him ‘my friend’. Also, post TFA both DR and JB stated that the characters were ‘just friends’. Okay, they wanted Finn to be ‘leading man.’ But, he wasn’t. In fact, I really don’t think there was one. Rey ended up on her own. And Finn was given far more screen time than Kylo, despite being a supporting character. Yet as the last Skywalker he should have had equal screentime with Rey, at the very least. In short, Finn fans on the JCF are not justified in their insistence their fave was unfairly treated. Finn was a supporting character. He was always meant to be a supporting character. The JCF Finn fans just refuse to accept it.

Final examples:

I feel like if TFA had come out one year later, Kylo’s topical nature as a villain for the times would have been undeniable to even Adam Driver’s most ardent fans. It still remains astounding that the most “Trumpy” Star Wars character being published in the era of Trump was LFL’s preferred male lead that they replaced John Boyega and handicapped Daisy Ridley with.

Donald Trump? Oh, boy....they must really hate him!

Even if Rey avoids becoming a homicidal maniac, she is still a very shallow person who was tempted into romance with a homicidal maniac because he has pretty hair, and when she “fixes” said homicidal maniac, we are supposed to believe that’s beautiful.

Fix him? She didn’t ‘fix him’. What she did was stab him in the gut while he was unarmed (way to go, Pure Jedi), then heal him out of guilt. Kylo fixed himself with the help of the memory of his dad.

Even at the end, no one helped ‘fix’ Kylo. He had to do it all himself. Probably the loneliest character in the entire Skywalker Saga. Sad end for an unhappy abuse victim who no one - except perhaps his father - really wanted.

Says it all, really....sigh.

He does have pretty hair though, doesn’t he?!

To be quite honest, I have a lot of good material with which to work.

I love Teen Wolf. I love it's aesthetic. I love it's morality. I love the fact that since its focus characters are teenagers, it doesn't create shortcuts where suddenly those characters are occult scholars or professional espionage agents. I love the way it responded to the strengths of the individual actors embodying their characters. I love the way it takes risks, from the fractured narrative of Frayed to the inscrutable menace of the Dread Doctors to the fact that there was no way to stop the Wild Hunt. I love the way it employs recursion, parallelism and narrative foils without restraint; it is a show aimed at teenagers and young adults but doesn't treat its audience as simpletons.

Most of all, I love Scott McCall. I love that he wasn't a Chosen One. He didn't learn how to fight by the end of episode 3; there were still better fighters than him at the end of episode 100. I love that he didn't act like a professional operative or a seasoned military commander by the end of the first season. He remained a teenager throughout. I love his resilience, his insistence that people were more important than power, and his refusal to allow what others had done to him to change him into something jaded or damaged. Most of all, I love his determination, arising both from principal and emotion, to preserve life by ending cycles of violence. Too often in modern culture, individuals who reject lethal force as a political tool are presented either as 1) Useless Pacifists Who Must Learn an Important Lesson in Putting Success Before Principle by being forced into situations where 'killing is the only option' or as 2) White Knights Who Value Their Own Moral Integrity and Succeed Without Soiling Their Uniforms. Scott never sought out danger; the villains threatened him or those he loved, yet he never allowed those villains to determine his response. Scott endured suffering, humiliation, weakness, failure, and betrayal, but he never abandoned the motivations that made him fight in the first place. What's not to like?

Of course, when you love something, you have to be careful not to let that love blind you to its weaknesses. I wish that the writing had shown Scott more sympathy for what he went through; while I don't think that this was the show's intention, I think its decision not to have Scott spend any time on the agonies he endured eventually lessened their impact. I have also been convinced that the show runner, Jeff Davis, suffered from problems with attention and self-discipline. He was so concerned with the Big Things that he didn't pay enough attention to the Little Things that make the Big Things meaningful, and it resulted in things like the show's nonexistent chronology or the degradation of the relationship between Scott and his mother (did you notice that Scott and Melissa never had a conversation about his romantic interest or his grades after Season 2? That they never had a discussion about Scott and Rafael?)

This inattention also allowed the problems plaguing the greater culture of the United States to seep in. A character's chances of surviving were heavily influenced by whether they were a good-looking white male or not. There is literally no greater example of poor behavior of a production leading to a racist impact than Vernon Boyd's death scene. When Boyd told Derek that the feelings he experienced during the full moon, it's obvious that the character is being used as a prop for Derek's journey. Boyd experienced two full moons -- the one in the dirty train station in Party Guessed where he was chained in a rusty car and beaten by Derek or the one when he was murderously insane and then trapped in a boiler room. Which feelings exactly made it worth it? To me, the writers were either so disinterested in Boyd's character that they forgot that he couldn't feel the full moon while trapped in a bank vault or, more likely, they were aware that the audience was so fundamentally invested in Derek's sob story that they wouldn't notice.

As you engage with a phenomenon which you love, these things begin to stand out, and you have to grapple with them, but if its truly quality, the flaws -- even the egregious ones -- don't sully your enjoyment. I still love the show, and I'm still going to be writing about it. I look forward to the movie with great anticipation.

I Tried to Run Away After Eating the Male Lead - By Inhye Lee (6/10)

Yandere comedies keep missing. There's just too much happening. Our main girl goes from homeless to Empress. Broke to married to the noblest man, because she ate a piece of candy when she was starving. That's all it takes to be special I guess.

I admit it. This was kinda funny in the beginning. Lorace is a beggar and sadly the priests of this world are very classist. They refuse to help her even though she's in bad shape.

The temple rumbles. There's chaos. She finds food, and a beautiful piece of candy. She eats it and the priests come to beat her up.

The candy is actually a sealed bead made of power. That power belongs to Lavihan, a Duke with magic. Basically with the bead he's too overpowered, so the priests were hiding it from him.

Lorace genuinely thinks he's going to cut the bead out of her.

He kills all of the priests, so she knows he's not merciful.

Lorace, of course, is really pretty. Even though she's been living on the streets for her entire life. Also, she's special. Her body absorbed his magic bead, somehow.

So what now? Lorace doesn't want to get executed. Lavihan is still crazy powerful WITHOUT the bead. She tries to run but she gets caught.

Lavihan proposes. Lorace wants to give his power back, and that could happen, if they have sex.

Maybe.

How convenient. Lorace wants to marry him, bang him, return his powers and then run away again.

Dumb plan but whatever.

Lavihan starts trying to seduce her for real. She's pretty good wife material because she's resistant to magic. He thinks she's cute and he makes his castle perfect for her. His servants get sent to the dungeon if they dare to miscount the silverware.

Why do so many people work for this guy???

Lavihan and Lorace hang out and read books alot. It's nice but there's no real chemistry here. Lavihan is just possessive because Lorace is interesting. She didn't explode after inhaling half of his strength. It's her only charm point.

The pope tries to save Lorace from Lavihan. He's on her side. She literally doesn't want to stay with Lavihan, but she doesn't help him??? She lets Lavihan torment him??? She doesn't say anything???

She kinda just feels like a pink blob not a character???

The pope rejects their marriage...yeah Lavihan is an unhinged mass murderer trying to marry a homeless woman that he kidnapped. Surprise. Lorace is fine with marrying him now, even though he's a dick that treats everybody but her like trash.

Lavihan, of course, wants to murder the pope.

Lorace stops him with her flirting powers. She also has magic. They are also in a novel, and Lavihan is the main character!!! Boring. The yandere is just an awful guy. The main girl is just a Cute Girl. Lavihan is an Asshole Yandere, and that's a Thing, but it's not for me. In a comedy setting Asshole Yanderes don't work well unless your jokes are good. I didn't see a single joke in this. After the candy gag there's no more attempts at humor. I fully expect that this will get cancelled before it finishes.

Well a lot of them are going 'I can't wait to see how Astruc defends the decision to redeem Felix after he commits literal genocide when Chloe's never done anything nearly as bad' and saying that him being isolated by his peers isn't a good enough excuse for that and like yeah, obviously it isn't and there's something bigger going on here-

ohh chloe stannies are the most hypocritical fuckers bc they'll be the first ones to point at her troubling relationship with audrey or the "i'm useless" speech in malediktator as if she isn't canonically racist and as of S4 to S5 the personification of privilege . a vital difference between miracle queen and argos in emotion is that felix's pretty much in the middle of an existential crisis and is spiraling so hard that he believes he's an inferior being and there's no way he'll ever belong in the world he finds himself in now, but chloe's *CANON* reason to snap is that post-miraculer, after ladybug STRAIGHT UP told her she couldn't give her the bee miraculous anymore, she acts like it never happened and has the audacity to feel wronged ? if anything their arcs r complete opposites because on a material standpoint chloe has everything she could ever wish for and as early as despair bear was shown that her peers are more than open to turn over a new leaf with her if she was going to put in the effort, so it's not an issue of acceptance, she only wants to be in a position of power and worship. but felix will feel detatched by PRINCIPLE, it's an issue of his EXISTENCE, not his personality or attitude in particular, especially with adrien stating he wasn't like that at all prior to his introduction episode .

it's funny how they're admitting that it was never about wishing ml tackled a struggling teenager snapping and committing fucked up shit due to a sense of hopelessness and desperation - they only want it to be Chloe!

and may i mention, absolutely no one in the show held chloe accountable for her actions in a permanent way . post-queen wasp, she got a second chance to wield the bee again and there's no consequences to her joining hawkmoth's side in the S3 finale . it's pretty fucking bold to invalidate felix's redemption by holding his actions against him as if we aren't talking about the people who up until now didn't care about their fave girl bullying the main lead her entire life. and once again chloe is forgiven time and time again by the people she torments but the narrative keeps her from changing . it's not about what she's done in the past, it's about what she's doing even now in the present. there absolutely is criticism to be made about the prospect of felix, the only male minor antagonist, being sympathized with as lila is the next big bad to come and chloe's reduced to a joke but it has nothing to do with felix's character and all to do with the crew's well known history of retconning and flanderizing anything or anyone they do not know what to do with .
